It deserves it.
But the one I really saw that I just can't wait to see again.

And where was it filmed?
In Pittsburgh.

And it made Pittsburgh look beautiful.
And there's some shots that being carried, I've actually walked.

Like outside the ballpark, we've actually, me here have been there.

So, yeah, it's, it's, it will make you laugh.
Well, I, I didn't cry.
I got close to Christ.
That's good and close to there enough.
You know, Raiders has been, that was incredible.
Which we talked about.

My favorite is still Thunder under.

But that, that's my favorite of the film of the whole festival so far.
For me.
I think every film that I've watched so far, I've enjoyed.
My favorite of the festival right now has to be Bad Kid Begins.
And I think there's probably a bias there.
Yeah.
But an amazing documentary about, about Bad Kid from last November.
It's going to get a theatrical release at the end of June from what we're reading online.
So we're very excited for the filmmakers there.
We're at the media lounge, which is on the ninth floor of the Highland Hotel in Dallas.
We actually have a beautiful view behind us of the SMU campus.
The DFB's honors currently going on on the second floor of this hotel.
So unlike last year, where they were at a completely different facility and then came to the media lounge,
they're all in the same building this year, which is great because it's raining outside.
So we don't have to worry about people.
I don't want to go over there because I don't want to deal with the rain.

And John Landis being honored this evening.

Only theater really one theater in the entire Houston area wow if you wanted to see you had to go to the Galleria
And I had gotten the book and I read the book and I was like oh my god
I've got to see this movie. Okay, and the book was written by George Lucas, right, okay?
so I finally taught my father into taking me to the all the way to into Houston to the Galleria Wow
So we go to the Galleria and I go I need to take a first Star Wars and she goes okay
The next one is like 1115 and I was like great. She's oh no no in three days
Wow
It was sold out for the entire three days. It's gonna be that way this go around to everywhere
Now did you also know that it was on this day in
1973 that George Lucas began writing Star Wars? Yes, I saw that I saw that on Star Wars dot com
You know where I saw episode four
Where right across the street from where we're sitting? Oh, wow
One in two North Park one in two I was still living in Iowa and it was that one of the old South theaters
It only showed one movie
I had to balcony and everything I remember the theater because
The lobby they still had lobby cards that then and I was seeing all the the production stills from this movie going
My mind's about to melt and I'm free, you know, I'm like two months shy of turning four
Yeah, and I remember that theater as clear as day because that's where we were and
I just remembered that like
Even as little as I was that movie changed my life. Oh, yeah
You know, that that is where I truly became embraced in my geek. It's it's the movie that made you fall in love with movies
Absolutely, that's how I've always explained it to people and JJ is bring I really believe JJ is bringing that back with this
He's bringing my inner he's waking my inner child up because
Lucas put a bullet in it back in 99
See and you and I will always agree to disagree on this because I'm not saying that
episode one was
The godfather of our time, but I really episode one didn't bother me
I was the godfather time was godfather three
But see I don't see it that way. I just I I went into episode one thinking to myself
This is the first chapter of a book. This is setting everything up. So my expectations were actually fairly low
Which is probably why it doesn't bother me as much like I knew I wasn't gonna get episode four out of episode one
I knew that going yet
Now your hatred is is multi-layered when it comes to episode one
Oh to me it's it's right there with caravan of courage as far as one of the worst Star Wars films ever made
That is the holiday special. Yeah, I mean be
To to make the decisions that he made to
Push certain characters down your throat that really should never have been pushed in the first place
Jar Jar
But it's all Jar Jar's fault and to kill off mall
See that's where I was going completely unnecessary
There was no reason to kill him when you could have kept him all the way through where you killed off Duku
Yeah, mall could have been Duku and mall was a much more interesting character taking nothing away from the great Christopher Lee
Mall was a fascinating character
Christopher Lee is a metal gods are and
It just it was totally uncalled for
Yeah, that all the merchandising was based around the image of mall anytime you bought any type of toy or anything
Related to episode one mall's face was on the box. Oh, yeah, and then you just and ceremoniously unceremoniously just

When finding out that Oscar Isaac was going to play
Apocalypse yeah, I wasn't really sure at first until I saw X-Mocky now seeing him balled with the beard
I actually saw Apocalypse. Oh, yeah, so I'm good with it now like this guy's got
This guy's gonna have more geek credit a year than a lot of people have an entire career
He's gonna have a lot more money than anybody else too, and he's already said that he's already said that his character will be back for episode eight
He was in a most violent violent year, which to me was a very forgettable film. I didn't really did it really
I did not take that he was really he was good
He was good. He was good at just as to Chastain was amazing and that she was wasted in that movie
Oh, yeah, she was wasted in that movie because I like my girls
But I felt that somebody of her caliber should have been given a bigger role
I felt that her her role in that film just it never clicked with me
She for for the when she came first came on the scene
It was film after film after film where she was the best thing in it agreed
You know, it was these awful independent films. You're like going
She's brilliant. This film is a piece of crap

I think that a lot of people I think a lot of people are going a lot of critics of bat fleck are gonna be silenced when they see this because he looks great in the suit
He's already got that disturbed look in the shot where he's not in the cowl where he's looking at the suit
Oh my god, that's a great shot fantastic and he and he encompasses who Bruce Wayne is in that shot
Yeah, and I'm very critical of my batman. He works the part. Oh my god me too perfect for the role
I totally grabbed always on the aflox train. No problems at all there, but um, you know
Everybody's saying it's starting out returns. No, it's not. It's a Batman Superman viewed from dark night returns
They do the the the armor and the outfit and finally got to see a decent version of the shot
They showed it sand the ego last year. Yes, I wouldn't put on the internet and
And I don't I don't know that it's gonna be issue four of the dark night
I think but I think there's gonna be enough elements of it that are gonna make the fanboys half

Oh, it's what I looked about the Dallas International Film Festival amongst so many other things is
It's not just new films. You know, they screen
Like I said, that's tomorrow. That's boot is tomorrow. Yeah, we had
Raging bull was screened during the Dallas International Film Festival and all these tropicalists. Yeah, but tropicalists as well
great classic films and new films both established people and up and comers
Which is so great that the Dallas International Film Festival can can do this and they do it with a great balance as well
The thing I like the best about the Dallas International Film Festival is they treat everybody the same. Yep. You ain't lying, right?
Um, the other day we were doing the press
We had dirt Namitsky on
And right beside him was a high school kid
And we treated him both exactly the same on the red carpet. We have another we have two guests

So you guys screened early on in the festival if I'm not mistaken. Yeah, the first week can we screen Friday and Sunday
How'd it go? It was great. Yeah, we had a great turnout. Yeah, it was surprising. So have you finally just
What I guess by question here we talk about being screened early in the festival
Do I need to turn you up a little bit over there? You okay? Just a little bit. How's that better? That's perfect. All right cool
How does it feel to just just screen so early in the festival and then you have kind of that time after
Is it better for you to screen early and then have that time to just kind of socialize and see other films or is it better for you to kind of lead up to it?
Well, I mean if I was able to pick
I would I would say
That it would be better to have one early and then one later so word can travel kind of book end
Yeah, you know things can build up to it
But I mean, you know, we're just happy to be here. So I mean just having a slot
Twice is good enough. We're happy. Yeah, absolutely, you know, and I'd rather have the first weekend than the last weekend with the thump fast and everything dying out right
or during the week because everyone's fresh
They came in and it showed in our audience. I mean we almost filled both
Theater so we can tell us tell us tell our audience about the film
Oh gosh, it's a film you probably haven't done that very much
You know, we've been working on this film for the past six years, you know riding it and getting it together along with other stuff and basically it's
It's a it's a dark dark western set in the 1900s which follows a group of outlaws
As they try to make their retirement they try to find
Some a robbery that they they stowed away in a well
But the trouble is they have to go a long ways over Texas across all the terrain and it ends up being 500 miles
And they start dying. Yeah, they start dying, you know, and mysteriously
Exactly weirdly and protestly
for me
The western has become almost a lost art form. Yeah, and whenever I say I hear somebody say hey
There's a new western coming out. I'm already on board
Yeah, because my my generation grew up on those great westerns
Even the westerners that came before me
You know, I had adults in my life that were like no, you're gonna sit down and you're gonna watch the sons of Katie elder
And you're good, you know, that was one. I remember fondly grown up
You're gonna sit down and you're gonna watch the good the bad and the ugly sure
And you're gonna watch all these great westerns and so when somebody brings a new western I'm in
You know, it's funny now though is because we thought the same thing. We're like, oh man
We've seen a couple of TV series in the western slowly trickles back and then it comes back in every time the westerns out there it seems like
It breaks audience awards. Everyone wants to watch it. Everybody wants to watch western
And when we had this movie out we've sold this western now. We're at the at the verge of selling really yes a good sell
But the thing is is that everyone says the same thing and even film festivals, you know is like
I'm not sure about a western. I'm not sure about a western
But then when it comes out, it seems like everybody likes a western
Everyone likes to watch some sort of dark Western, you know, we're always on the fringe
You know, I like it like it doesn't fit in with what we're putting together here. That's what we heard a lot
And my well, they is the westerns are the ultimate story of good versus evil. They always are
Yeah, yeah, yeah, you know, you mentioned some of the classics and that's really what we had in mind more making this
You know, we love the the modern remakes. I mean, we like three tinder you mother remake. You know, I mean
We like the true-get remake
You know, we're still on board just because they're western. There's not a lot of right? So it's just like getting you fixed
But the ones you mentioned in that era was exactly what we had in mind when we were making it writing it
You know the whole process so when you look at it
It has the look and feel of a movie that would fit in
On the same shelf as those, you know, that was the idea not not just aesthetically, but you know
Plotwise and the characters and the you know the ensemble and the weird
Sort of carnival atmosphere that some of them had that's what we were striving for was this the actual premiere of the film
Or happens to have been screened before this was the world premiere no one I mean in fact no one other people worked on it had seen it before
Where's it going from here? We just
I got to deal with image entertainment. So it'll be released very nice
It'll be out later in this year. So we're very excited about that
Both the international
People looking at it as well. So I mean are there any other festivals or you just now know that you've got the distribution
I mean the distribution was honestly it was already lined up before this festival
So we really I mean, you know a lot of people use festivals to sort of get the stage to get distribution
So we to be honest we already had it. So this was all just sort of like icing on the cake, you know, we know where we'd even have a festival
But so no we we don't have any light and up but that could change now that we've done this one
So yeah, that's when I was mentioning about people that you know, especially even in film festivals Dallas gave us a heck of a chance
You know being being able to premiere here
But we went a long time with a lot of film festivals denying it, you know, and we we got
A great company that wants to distribute it for us, you know, nationally and some international countries as well, you know, so it's like
You know like the way we're saying this is icing on the cake, but still it's a great
It's a great thing to be a part of you know to show it to an audience and have them
To see because you you never know exactly what they're gonna laugh at and until you put it in a room of strangers
That didn't work on the film you have no idea. So it was nice to see how it played, you know
Where they laughed when you didn't think they would and vice versa, you know
And you know, I mean if you do get to see this movie or anything

And we've been at this thing for 12 years together 13 years 15 years, you know, I lost track
Hey, that's what we're looking for now is is to go on to our next project. So you'll see us again
Yeah, so what what is the next project?
Ah, well, we have a couple on the on the on the board, but more than like it'll probably have a little dark
Psychological psychological thriller. Maybe I guess would be a good way to describe it
Yeah, it'll be more of the dramatic side and less of the horror side, but it will still have some of that goodness
thriller. Yeah
So
Total experience on the Dallas film festival is an actual film festival you guys just came from DFS awards on assuming
Yes, how'd that go? No, it's not a dress all the time. Yeah, sometimes I have to
It's very tricky dressy. You know with our first film wild man of the Navidad. We were in Tribeca
And I'd have to say this lounge with the way they have it set up. It's oh, yeah, it's close
It's nice. Wow, they put a lot of money in Tribeca. Yeah, yeah, absolutely
But they put a lot of money in this too. Obviously, they didn't have any sort of gala or anything like this
So we're not used to like cleaning up
Brother you ain't the only one
Plus you have to walk to the other side of Manhattan. Yeah, here. It's all in one place
And that was they really planned it well. Oh, yeah, oh man. This is this has been great
I mean this is my first experience here, and I would love to come back. They've treated us very well
And they just you know, they're the old filmmakers. They're all about us and not, you know
The bringing in the big names. I accept John Lennon's, but I'll oh that's a cool, you know, I mean how could you not? Hey, what a plus
Los brothers. Yeah, joking. Yeah, you're but you're bookending the festival with blythe danner and Sean
We love is hearing so many filmmakers have that positive experience with the Dallas International Film Festival where I've had so many people come up and say look man
We love is we're getting that treatment that we might not get it other film festivals that now it really goes all out and puts everything out there and
And and let's the filmmakers have their moments that they deserve for all of the hard work that they put in right
And you're really good at that. Yeah, every detail that they they do you know
They they assign someone to you to sort of make sure everything's going smoothly and you know
You get the red carpet experience you get lots of press coverage and they sort of make sure that that that evolves over the course of the festival
And they're very helpful in pushing you in the right direction
So I mean a lot of times festivals you just go and you get lost in it and you're like it's over
Right, yeah, they take you by the hand and definitely guide you around and I mean that you know have to take it for that sure
That's awesome. Have you been able to check anything else out that you really enjoyed?
Well, honestly, we haven't really had I mean when you have a film it's so hard, you know, because you're like pushing in and so
No, I haven't got to see all the films that I wanted to so I'm a little disappointed in that regard plus
Family took us back and so we've gone back and forth from Austin, but um
But I have a few on my radar. So I'm watching for him. I have a feeling they'll be out soon
So any and which ones I would like to see western actually
And both of us we we almost made it but there was some event that was in way, but
It's just because we're very interested in that documentary
And I also I'd like to see slow west which which won Sundance so I'm going for the westerns
She's like Dallas really plugged a lot of western or western like movies in this festival this year
You know, we went on a couple of rounds of film festivals. I mean we had a movie that was
Two hours at six minutes or so and we cut it down an hour and 46 minutes
So this is our second year coming to festivals it took us a while to get exactly like we wanted
So I mean are they only being appreciative to Dallas International Film Festival, but also
Just just just been been pushing it for a while. So this is a real treat for us. Absolutely. All right

Yes, and he was great
For the people that are just now listening to this show tell them about the film. Oh, well don't look in the basement
Part two is the sequel to the 1972
Drive-in film don't look in the basement which was directed by my father as at Brownrig
And that's what I was waiting for oh, yeah, yeah, I grew up with that film and with you know most of the actors as well and
So about 40 years later, you know my father always wanted to do a sequel and he was unable to
In the time that he was with us. We lost him in 96 and since that time it kind of fell on me to ticket the mantle trying to do the sequel that
He could never get done
Take me through this now. Did you you wrote and directed it? I co-wrote it with Megan Emmerich. Okay, also plays Jennifer in the film
So I totally lost my train of thought of
How hard was it to kind of did you was it hard for you to recapture that same
Vibe from the first one or did you kind of have this idea in your head long enough that you were able to flesh it out?
Well, yeah, well
Yeah, basically is a all my life of dad talking about it and then 14 years of me actually you know working
Very screenplays one after the other
um
It was really hard because what I didn't want to do was I didn't want to compete with that right, you know
And so what I wanted to create was kind of a hitchcock suspense film
That was modern day and used the first film as a
Real-life event that occurred in the 70s. Okay, you know, so I wanted it to be much more of a storyline as opposed to
It's just like the first one only bloodier
It's just like it but different right
It's it but it's a continuation of the storyline because of the guy that was
Sam who was alive at the end of the first film what happened to him 40 years later and you know
Fleshing out the end of the story of don't look in the basement
One of the thing I love and you said the same thing as mr. Rikki said last week
Use the word drive-in it's a drive-in movie. Yeah, which I'm so glad that you guys put it that way because I'm such a fan of the drive-in
We just had we have one just south of here. That's wonderful if we let it the drive-in was such a dying thing for so long
Yeah, and they're all starting that we've got one in anisers one for worth now
Oh, yeah, the the coyote the coyote. Yeah, oh my god
I haven't been out there yet, but actually we're actually looking at
We've talked about the idea of trying to have a
When we do a full release of the film is to do a double feature because basement was that was gonna be my next question and we actually have a print
Really of the original basement 35 millimeter? Yeah, wow, and we've actually yeah from somebody that actually owns in their private archive and we actually
Uh have been working on putting together a kind of a remastered same thing
I mean, we're not gonna change it at all right, but just clean it up the little batches and all that
And basically try to do a double feature first one and then the second one nice. So it's an idea. So we're tossing it around
Where is the film going from here?
Uh, that's a good question. Uh, we this is our where world premiere was
So this is the first time that it's been shown publicly and now we're dealing with some distributors
We're talking we've suddenly we've got all these people trying to talk to us about
Getting it out and distributing it, which is great
And then we've got several other festivals that it's gone out to I of course and the director so I don't
Know all of the details
When it comes to where they tell me to go I go where they tell me to go
I mean, I've done my job. I sat in my little chair and said action cut now. It's you know
Uh, so yeah, and it really was a lot of that with the actors were great in this film
I know there's probably eventually going to be a DVD release a blu-ray release. Oh, yeah
Possibilities that you could do a commentary for the original. That's already yours. Oh, yeah
That's what I'm talking about see because I grew up with a lot of the original cast with Annabelle Weenick and Camilla Carr who was in the original
Is actually in the sequel nice as a different character nice because her character died in the first one
So but she plays a completely different character, but we had to bring some people back
You know because I think dad would have wanted that
What was that like sitting in that director's chair?
Knowing that you know
You're that you're literally taking the mantle from your father from the first film
Was there a was that a different feel for you in that director's chair or for you this
It was it just I'm just a director. It was a spooky feel. Oh, yeah, there's a lot of pressure
Because you know, I mean I grew up in a horror household
You know and I know that my right big huge fans up if I screw think my my father did don't look in the basement
Poor white trash part to keep my grave open don't hang up. I mean a lot of these titles
You're like any second down someone. He's gonna come tap it on my shoulder
It's right
So this is my legacy son don't screw it up exactly and so
One of the things that he had always talked about is if you've seen don't look in the basement
Was that dad always talked about through all the years he was working on a sequence is the only damn thing that I know
I want to have is I want Sam to put his boat in the water
And so it was like whatever we do
We've we've got to have that at some point
So yeah, I took a lot of his notes and we started putting it together
It was very intimidating being in the chair
Because we shot it in the same house as the original
We I believe we did talk about that. Yes, we did in in twokana. It was the same house
And it was really kind of spooky because I remember periodically throughout the years
Dad would take a trip there
Just to kind of walk around the set and make notes about what he wanted to do and I would go and on occasion
So it was really weird, you know going back with the full cast and crew and all the cameras and everything going
Okay, it's where dad shot this. Oh, this where dad wanted to shoot this scene. Oh, this is where the whole
You know the the massacre happened and it was just really a surreal feeling and from some of the cast members as well
Uh, like Scott Teppermann who was a huge fan of the original don't look in the basement man
He showed up and was like oh my god. This is the room. This is where it was. Oh my gosh
It's just tripping me man. I'm flipping out man. So it was really it was really cool
And it sounds like everything went well. How long to take you to film it about three and a half weeks
A film you notice that a lot of here the doubts are national festival film festival
There's been a lot of the films that have been shot in three weeks or less like get out there get it done move on and it's just fast
Well, we lucked we lucked out with this place because where the original film was shot is now a hostel
So it's three rooms and three floors of rooms
And then you've got a cafeteria with an industrial kitchen. So we just hired chefs
There you go. You all slept for three weeks on the second floor
Shot in the third floor so as I can wake up seven o'clock go downstairs go to the cafeteria eat breakfast and go up
There's the third floor and start shooting no need for a transportation captain. You're already there right
It was great. It was like summer camp. We all just kind of hung out and then barbecue's at night. It was great
Are you have you exhaled yet?
I'm sorry. What have you exhaled yet? All right. Oh no
No, I know that this no, I don't know that I'll ever hex exhale with this one
There'll always be they'll always be the
Oh, man, I wish I could have shot that different. Oh god. Why didn't we shoot that while we were there?
You know gosh, you know, I mean, there's I could tweak this thing and so forever, you know
How you feel now versus how you felt a week ago
How do I feel now versus versus versus a week ago versus for the premiere? Oh
Oh much more comfortable. I feel I mean, I'm glad we got a lot of great responses
I mean being a director is only one half of the coin the other half is the audience
You know if you want to make a film for yourself that's great as long as you're ready to buy all your own tickets too
That's true, you know
So you've got to pay attention what the audience is getting and not getting and you know
You sometimes you make adjustments accordingly sometimes hey man. It's perfect. It's awesome the way it is so
Uh, I enjoy just hearing the feedback, you know, are they getting it?
And I'm a lot more comfortable now because we've gotten some good feedback
You know from people that aren't like family and friends right, you know, that all want to be totally supportive
You know and it's been it's been wonderful

Yes, I did the Q&A last night. I was there. Yes, sir
Lone star holy war for our audience that isn't local because we're all over the world because we're a podcast. That's what we do
Just basically basically this is the story of the rivalry between the University of Texas and Texas A&M
Which goes back longer than I realized until I saw your film right so tell us tell us about it
What's else? I mean, I mean, I don't know while she need to say besides that because I don't know that you want to give away too much before we do
I you know, I'm coming and going I saw this too
Yeah, you saw before I did. It's a great documentary. It gave both views
Both sides of the story of A&M and Texas great history great footage of today
I it was an incredible job. I alumnus so I'm out
Now
We have we have to declare allegiances. Okay
Did you have no legions going into this thing? I did not I may I'm a kid from Los Angeles. Okay, I'm from Florida
So I didn't have a pony in this race either. I had no skin in this game from the start
I actually and I pride myself on being a sports guy sports is part of what we do on this show. Yes, sir

Learned a lot
I did not know that neither one of these teams had those names when they first started
That was one of the things I learned and I was like had no idea and Chad and I were actually talking about that driving over here tonight
about some of the things I learned
uh
How what take me to the process because a lot of the people that are involved in this your interview subjects a handful of them are from the Dallas Fort Worth area
I one of whom was there last night the great norbianskis right? I may think fan of how did you get hooked up with those people being a guy from LA
Well, I um, I moved to uh moved to Texas and in 1989 native LA kid, but I've been in uh, I've been in the Dallas Fort Worth area since 1989
Okay, and you know, we my partners and I uh King Hollis and Barry Mendelsson
We embarked on a journey that started several years ago to find and present the 28 most extraordinary sports stories in the history of the state
Oh, wow and that journey began right about the time then the arrival we ended
So it was just a perfect storm really it was the classic way for us to
To begin the story to begin our journey with this film lone star holy war and what we really started
As a somewhat of a of a straightforward sports documentary the more that we
Got into it the more that we did the research and the due diligence
We began to realize that this story is
It's so much bigger than just
A sports story because these are the two most significant
institutions in the state of Texas. I mean they are as big as the Roman Catholic Church by comparison in the state the influence that they wield
And they decided after 118 years they weren't going to play football anymore and that's a story
And hearts crack and hearts crack wide open all over the state Kyle field is on so many lists of the of one of the 10
Stadiums you have to see a football game in right. I mean, I've been down the conversation a couple of times just unbusiness trips and
That
A&M is college station
Like they're just happens to be other stuff around it. You know what I mean
But what I really dug about your film was when you get to the breakup
You look at it from both sides and it's two so totally different stories
Where a&M wants to talk a lot about how texas was threatening to go to the pack 12 the texas didn't really want to talk about that
They wanted to talk more about the network and how it's supposed to be together
I found that fascinating and I will tell you by one criticism. I wanted it to be longer
I wanted another half an hour, you know, because I was so riveted by the story you were telling
It's credit started to roll and I was like no give me more, you know
Well the original cut was 88 minutes and we went back in it went back in
And and and edited to shape it down to a 74 minute cut which is what you saw last night
But one of the one of the things that you said that I really appreciate is that
We decided to move away from any kind of voiceover any kind of commentary from the filmmakers when it came to the essence of the breakup
We wanted the two universities
To just tell their stories no parallel cutting nothing. This is the perspective from college station
This is the perspective from Austin and as you can see they're
They're a wildly different assessment of what happened and why it ended up that way and speaking of
narration
The guy you got to narrate the first part of this thing right like
I for a minute was like did they get John Fesenda for this, you know, because I was just waiting for the autumn wind is a rain
Like it was just I loved that about it
How I mean you said you wanted to tell
the
28 best stories in Texas sports, right? This was one correct right what's next
What's next for us is a second film that I
That I directed in the series and my partner King Hollis the and I alternate in
And in directing the films, but the second one is one
That was probably one of the most joyous films for me to work on and that is the extraordinary story
Of the Houston Astridome and it's all the judge and the ape wonder and then it talks about you know
Judge Roy Hofmein's of course who was this
Amazing visionary character that believed that baseball could be played indoors and believed that he could have a place
In the bayous of Houston that people would come to to see events that he baseball inside and the Astridome story is
It's just extraordinary and this as you know is the 50th anniversary earlier this week was the was the official first
The 50th areas of the first event held at the Astridome and one of the things about the Astridome
Then I'm sure yourself and many of your listeners know is that the Astridome was the first
Dome Stadium anywhere in the world, and that's why it was the eighth wonder
Why was the eighth wonder and it it changed the trajectory of the viewer fan experience for all of sports
So the Astridome right here in Texas is something that just changed the way that we view sports globally
And why can't we in Houston get it together make it a landmark and be done with it
You know why is there so much so much pushback on this because
And it's amazing because it's right next door to NRG which is used to be reliant stadium
And it's amazing how the new stadium just kind of dwarfs it right you know

Guillermo Delta are all these guys that are modern filmmakers talk about that as a seminal film for them
So like you know, okay
You see you see breathless and you're sitting there and you go okay
Boy those two people are sitting in a car in a two-seater car
But they're not really driving anywhere. What's behind them? Oh, it's it's projected. It's 16 millimeter projected behind them
And then you go and you watch pop fiction and you're like oh that guy's driving in a convertible car
16 millimeter projected behind and what and how often is it
That an Americanized version of a foreign film right does
Justice to it like breathless did because a lot of people don't understand that's a remake of a French film right
Well, but don't say French because it's good dark. It's a little above the French thing
I mean, I love French cinema, but then like when you look at good dark who's still making movies who released a movie last year
Good dark show with the dark still making movies
You go like dude. There's like there's a let there's there's a level up to filmmaking that we all have to aspire to
You know and the fact that this this kind of film did that kind of justice and it's still being shown to this day to audiences
That will come out to see it right and I just I love it when when directors get it right right
You know when when you can look at a film even I'm sure gotter probably looked at it and went I'm good
You know because they captured his essence so well they did it for an American audience, which is very very tough to do
Well, yeah, but it translates because you know the original guitar version is an American woman in Paris
And this version is a French woman in Los Angeles in the 1980s
You know, it's a perfect translation because in the 60s
Paris
was
You know the shit, you know, and and and now in the 80s when they were making that everybody wanted to be an LA
Yeah, you know, there's some major parallels that were really

Bring my frame is a featuring documentary about four Afghan photojournalists who are building a free press in Afghanistan
We're working in a post-tile band regime where the Taliban banned photography from 1986 to 2001
So it's a human character-driven story following their lives from running behind two side bombs to go into the grocery store
It's giving audiences a different look in Afghanistan that they haven't seen before what brought you to this phone
Um, I've always been really interested in films about
challenging our perceptions of different ideas or cultures
And questioning what we think about certain places and Afghanistan, you know, was a
Huge one for that because we have such preconceived notions about what and who these people are
You know very sensational in this media over the last 15 years about war and suicide bombs
And we just really wanted to bring people to the streets and see normal everyday life and hear real human character
stories to empathize with
How long did you shoot it?
We were there for two weeks in 2012 and then two months in 2013. Oh, wow
So this you with deep on this thing over a long period of time. Yeah, yeah, and then we were editing all of 2014
So was this the premiere of the film? Where's it shown before we premiered itself by Southwest?
Very nice. Yeah, so that was about a month ago, and then we're on to our international premiere hot docs
Hot docs is coming up just right around the corner. Yeah

And that is going to be where for for our listeners that may be in the area Toronto

The presentation of the award just really spoke to they explained the film before they gave the award
Oh, wow, and it was really amazing how they talked about it
So it was right in line was what we're trying to do with the film, you know giving audiences a look at Afghanistan that they haven't seen before
So it was an honor to get the award because there's been such great
Award winners before in past years and so this one was just huge for us distribution possibilities
Yeah, we're in the works with that right now
It's only been a month since our premiere so those conversations are happening right now

Let's start with distributor. We'll go to audience after that um distributor
I mean whoever gets it to our core audiences. I mean the audiences that we want to reach are at Dallas
I mean we've been really
Really lucky to film our have the film show first at Austin and then we went to Atlanta and Cleveland and Ashland and here in Dallas
I mean these are great places to have bigger conversations about what we're thinking the narrative of Afghanistan
Why we think we do about this place and talking about free press and why it's so important for Afghanistan right now
So I think Dallas is perfect. This is exactly what we want to do
One thing that we were talking to somebody else about earlier and he was talking for his documentary
He said he would love to see somebody like HBO documentaries take a hold of it
Do you see this as as an area for someone like HBO or is this something that you would see more
Theatrically that people would need to see um, it just depends right now. It's everything's up in the air
So I don't really know exactly what's gonna happen
But um, I think all those conversations that are happening right now
We're just trying to see what the best fit is because we have to be true to the story and be true to film and get it to the audiences that we really carry about
And we have whatever distributor offers that that's what the way we're gonna go
Have you had any chances to see other films while you were here?
I saw barge the jury award winner and that was amazing. I heard such great things
And that was really excited to get to see that one any films that you didn't get to see that you wanted to

Yes, I mean so many it's really hard because you're here as a filmmaker and trying to meet every one at the same time
So a lot of them pretty much all of them
I mean if there's over 160 films to see yeah, there's a lot

And that became my theme for the movie. It's there's nothing more manly than controlling yourself

You have this beautiful film like just it just looks gorgeous
But there's meat behind it. Oh, yeah, there's a strong story there that
You captivate every audience you've got the kids that are gonna sit there and watch it in the wow
This looks amazing and you're gonna get the older the crowd that's gonna go you know what this guy's great story too
Well, that was that was the intent from the beginning. It was
Like you I love 2D films and the best ones were the ones that were gorgeous
But underneath there was a big heart and a big message and so in book a life
I always said it's a cake and the frosting will be delicious now colorful and every kid will want to eat it
but we're gonna stick
And all this
Protein in the film and you're not gonna notice, but they're gonna learn something and you got robbed by the academy
You should got nominated. It was a it was a review

Especially with Zoe Saldana's character. I saw a lot of her in that. Do you
Is it more of a matching the voice to the character or the or the design of the character to the to the voice actor?
Well, we we designed the whole film before we knew who we're gonna cast and then after we designed my wife designs
All the character all the female characters. I designed all the male characters
We had a sort of a dream meeting where we said okay now that the character to design who would be our number one pick
And I'm a huge Zoe Saldana. She's a hurrah. I mean she's and you know what columbiana a great film a lot better than it had to be in my personal opinion
Yeah, and Zoe honestly is
Typecast as a strong
Personality because she's so strong and real life
So you are you're letting someone basically shine out what they're really good at because that's what she is
I mean she's a tough girl
She's very very tough and then same thing with
Cheney Tatum. It was one of those
You know you have the a Luna who's a very romantic very earnest guy and to me it was
Okay, we want to make this love triangle work. Who's a guy that
Every dude wants to hang out with but every girl wants to
Really hang out and every guy doesn't want his girl hanging out with exactly
And so when we picture when we picture in the movie, uh, you know, he loved he loved it and at the end he said uh
Jorge, uh, you know I'm not Mexican, right?
And we laughed and laughed and laughed and I told him look you represent your captain Latin America
You represent the slavness of every Latin guy
And he he went for it and same thing with ice cube, you know what when I first picture to him
He looked at me and was like are you sure you want me to do this?
He'd never done an animation
He was really skeptical in the beginning and then he fell in love with it

Channing Tatum he's like he's on my list of
Guys I I want to be able to hate but can't
Exactly. He just see he's just that guy that he does all these really cool things and he
He really gets the whole celebrity thing kind of like to me
Steven Amel from arrow is that guy? Yeah, he gets celebrity and what it should be used for and I kind of see
Channing Tatum in that same category and and he makes fun of it, you know
He makes fun of the beefcake persona he has and I remember
early on

When I saw magic Mike
It was not the film I was expecting
And I remember when I first met him I told him magic Mike is the citizen king of male stripper movie
And they're doing another one and they're doing another
And I got the lead role
That's called magic Mike not break dance don't do different films
Although I think we need to have a Photoshop job done of the breaking poster with Don on it

Having him out today and having him and surprising him was so great because we've been working on that
I just one of our jurors worked on a movie with the producer of Max Landis's film and I just worked out so well
And then Deborah Landis got involved and we just surprised John
So that was a brilliant move handing these out to everybody and keep it quiet
They were very they were very nervous about these pieces of people with if we got to get them on the carpet
And not letting anybody know was like so and John doesn't check his phone
So I had to call him John John Landis my buddy John Landis
So he crashed our podcast. Oh, you did
It was amazing. Yeah, we had the two guys from the LEGO movie and Landis all on at the same time. Oh my god
It was a battle royale just right in front of me

But they have a Santa Monica office and we did that and went that's gonna be crazy

And then four years later we get we get that movie so it's amazing

The do a winner from Sundance me and her on the dying girl with it all these great films studios and people are starting to recognize what we do
So things are getting easier, but at the same time. I'm always searching
So when you already started planning next year? Yeah, I'm actually going to do so it's our 10th anniversary next year and

Yeah, so we're going to probably do something for 10 months

We have a new series that's starting next week actually

We've got some great movies. We're Becca

So that's going to be it's going to be the start of it. I'm working on a 70 millimeter series that's coming up over the years
It's going to be at the look cinema hopefully and we're going to we have a bunch of series that we're going to work on
10 year 10 months 10 years leading up to next year wow
So yeah, I'm trying to think what's coming out. Yeah, so um if it would if it were released later
I would open with Batman Superman, but I don't think it's going to happen because it's not going to happen because they'd never do that
