It is now time for part two of our coverage
of the 2017 edition, the sixth annual.
Tell us how many musicals presents
the Texas High School Musical Awards.

to be given out.

Greenland looks a little different than it did last year.

It's a great Chris Cornell lead singer of Sound Garden, 52.
I really don't want to go too deep into it.
People can go out there and find out the story on their own.
I really don't want to talk about that on the air.
But you know, they were supposed to play here
in our Fairburg next weekend.
And it was one of the shows I was really looking forward to.
It's an act that I always wanted to catch
because I've been a fan of this fan of whenever
the Seattle explosion happened.
92 in the early 90s.
91, 92 somewhere.
I gravitated towards Stone Tipple Pilots and Sound Garden.
I know that most people gravitated towards either
Nevada or Pearl Jam.
Fair enough.
And I even preferred Allison Chains over Nirvana and Pearl Jam.
And now all those lead singers are gone.
Yeah, I'm more of, I mean, I always enjoyed Sound Garden's
fine work.
But I guess of all of the music's a little too loud.
I'm not sure the music down.
For your intro music because we're such a hurry,
you get back here and get ready for the first award winners.
Think of the music cute up correctly.
Can I do the cold open?
Well, I mean, everybody knows we're here.
We don't have to announce our entrance.
We don't need the pyro or anything like that.
Yeah, because we're all about the pyro.
But I really enjoyed Sound Garden's work.
And what makes me sad about it is, oh, the only thing
a lot of people know them for is going to be Black Hole Sun.
And there's better songs on that album,
much less in the Sound Garden catalog.
So if you don't know a lot about Sound Garden Goat,
or do the research.
Or just Cornell and the other projects he was involved in.
You know, he had solo slave, he had audio slave,
he had solo work, and the theme is Casino Royale.
He did a Bond theme.
What about you know my name?
Yes.
Is that the name of it?
Uh-huh.
One of my favorite Bond themes.
Much better than the one that followed it for sure.
I was the Jack White Alicia Keys debacle.
And he also has a great acoustic cover of a song
that's in your repertoire.
Yes.
Nothing compares to you.
Which they were talking about this morning
on the Bob and Tom show as well.
Didn't he do another Prince cover though?
Didn't he do an acoustic version of Purple Rain at one point?
Not that I'm aware of.
I mean, some reason I can hear it, and I don't know why.
I saw that out.
I saw it out at the, I want to say he was in the studios
at Sirius XM for a live in studio appearance.
When he did that cover of nothing appears to you.
Was that in the in the wake of Princess passing?
I might have been.
I want to say it was.
Not pretty sure it was.
And tomorrow night, we're not doing a show live,
but we're going to be at House of Blues to see one of my favorite bands.

And they all dress just like Ned Flanders.

And then two screenings and a stage production next week.
We've got a lot going on over the next few days.
Saturday night, we're going to be live at Garland High School
for the Real Owl Film Festival.
It is their student film festival that's been going on for a long time.
I don't remember exactly how many years.
We'll know that on Saturday.
I've got it written down.
I'm going to say 17 years or something crazy.
I can't remember what she said.
I feel bad that I don't know.
We're looking forward to seeing those guys
and helping out with the judging of the student films.
We'll be doing our podcast.
We'll talk to some of the nominees.
And then we're going to be a part of their awards ceremony.
We're going to be presenting the four judges awards.
So a lot of, you know, we're having a first tonight
of presenting our first award ever.
I mean, our next press now is to become the official podcast
of DSM.
I don't know how that's going to happen.
I don't know how that's going to work.
We're going to ask Francisco.
And he's going to say yes.
That's how it's going to happen.

Tina, who was with us, both of y'all
were with us at North Texas Giving Day.
This last fall.
We were actually talking about you in the pre-show.
And I'll highly praise you.
We're by the kids that were sitting with us
about all the work you did with them this week.
Oh, I'm so touched.
Now that explains why my ears were burning.
Hey, there you go.
So talk about how this week has been for you,
because you've been working with the nominees
selecting their solos that they were going to do
and as well as the medley performances.
I'm basically what I did was this year.
And as well as last year was working
on their contrasting solos, not their medley's,
but their contrasting solos.
So I just realized I only had three days with them,
you know, a Sunday to Sunday Monday.
And it was a total of 14 hours.
I was like, how did you were amazing?
How did that happen?
Amazing.
Although I did ask anybody who wanted to come over
to my house during the Sunday to Sunday
and they all did practically.
Jeff, the local refrigerator down just to be safe.
Well, I should have.
There was just more.
I said, sorry.
But it was amazing.
They took advantage of that.
And I was so appreciative because I did have,
there were key changes.
And we worked with a few of them that changed their songs.
I mean, they were amazing.
They were really amazing.
How many of them did they change versus how many you changed?
Well, you know, when they come in and they do a song
and I go, okay, what else do you have?
And I go, I don't have anything.
And I say, okay, let's go to work.
And let's look for it.
Or they'll say, I have something else.
And I'll listen to it.
Okay.
And then I'll say, let's work on this one.
And then there are some that we worked and made sure
that the keys were right.
So it was a lot of technical working.
And then we would work artistically in that.
And I love that.
And they were amazing.
Every one of them.
And at this point, you know, the thing is moving.
The train is rolling.
How are you feeling right now versus,
I mean, are you just as nervous as they are?
I don't think I slept last night.
I was a mess.
I kept waking up all the time.
I think I slept enough for both of us last night.
I was up at 3.30 actually in the morning.
So I was in bed by 8.30 last night.
I'm old.
No, I just could not turn it off last night.
I just couldn't.
I just kept thinking.
And I was hearing the songs that they sang that were,
I would wake up and go, who sang that?
And in the morning, I went, what is that?
Their songs are in my head.
Yes, I am a nervous wreck.
Well, John, I think if I heard in the speaker correctly,
you've already been on stage at least once tonight.
Yes, I'm out.
How's the room?
It's amazing.
They're over 3,000 people in the house tonight.
See, at one point I was saying it holds 5,000.
I'm just going to stick with that.
That's good.
We're going to include everyone.
They won't be comfortable, but it'll hold.
Now, do you have the demographics on you?
I know.
It's far west as, oh gosh.
I know we had somebody from Paris.
I don't know.
It's in an ocean.
I love it.
OK, so Lubbock is probably the farthest west.

In East, I'm going to...
Is anybody farther than Paris?
Because I know we did have one of the young ladies.
I'm going to say it's best actress nominees
from high school in Paris.
You know, the amazing thing is that out of all these schools,
there's 78 productions.
If you figure it just roughly 100 kids on stage and off
and the crews and so forth, we're talking about close
to 8,000 children who are involved and touched
by this program.
Because the fun awards that we see tonight on stage
are part of it.
The other awards are the technical awards.
And the artistic awards.
And those are a big part of it too.
That was awesome last year.
We had a couple of the kids that were like,
oh, we're just going to come talk to you
because we're not going to win.
It was from a technical standpoint.
And I'm like, we're just going to hang out with you guys
and I'm like, wait a minute, did they just say we won?
And they were just go.
That was so cool.
They thought they had no chance to win.
So they're just hanging out with us.
And then they heard their name over the loudspeaker.
And they, I mean, it was just like they were ninjas.
They were just go on.
You want to just crack open a bottle of water.
Drop the bottle of water.
It was like it was still hanging in mid-air.
She was gone.
And that's what I love, just the energy
that these kids create.
And the fact that they're all,
that sense of competition is so minimal with them,
that they're all just like, you know what?
I won't be mad if this person next to me wins.
I'll be totally stoked.
And they are so supportive of one another.
They really are phenomenal to watch them.
At one of the kids stretched to a new note
and all the other guys the other night like applauded
and jumped up and gave them the high five.
You would have thought we were at a basketball game.
I have to admit that when I work with them,
that invariably I get one or two people to cry.
And it's always a group hug.
And I think it was the guys this time that one of them,
and they all came in and just supported each other.
Because, you know, I try to bring the artistry in.
And so a lot of their songs that they sing
as they're contrasting is pretty deep and emotional.
And I try to bring up a lot of things.
And I didn't even know about that process
until like two weeks ago, because I was following
on Instagram and I was like, but he's in this,
but he's singing from, I'm very confused by all this.
And so when we had some of the kids sit down
and I was like, tell me about that process.
And they were like, yeah, I mean,
we had to do something that would contrast
what we were nominated for.
Then we had to pick something that we were nominated for
from that.
I'm like, how do you even, when do you sleep?
I don't know.
Because some of them were in the middle of AP testing
and there was so many things that they were doing.
I don't, I don't know how they did.
I was just exhausted.
I just have to say that Tina is amazing with these kids.
And she teaches what I call the secret to acting a song.
She has it so beautifully and so gently.
And she draws things out of kids.
And I'll listen for a little bit.
And I'll walk across the hall and listen to it.
Like I say, she's working with the boys.
I walk across the hall, listen to the girls.
I come back and honest to goodness,
you would think three months had passed.
The growth that these kids go through
and the way that she works with them is phenomenal.
Well, they're hungry.
When I give them the information, they run with it.
And that's the beauty of it.
And sometimes I go, wow, they really listen to me.
They do, they really listen to me.
And I love that.
That means that I can actually communicate with them.
And then, but here's the thing.
I treat them respectfully.
And I appreciate all their hard work and their talents.
And their hard work just pays off.
It is amazing.
It's the growth within, like you said, minutes or hours.
It's amazing.
I want to compare and contrast a little bit
last year to this year.
Last year, John's got to go.
And that's fine.
He's got to go make appearances in shake hands
and kiss babies and everything else.
So you're hilarious.
I was trying to do it more subtly than that.
Believe me, we have the subtlety of a bowl
and a china shop on this show.
You know that, sir.

Hi, I'm Stark Sands of Broadway's Kinky Boots.

That's what I was waiting on, which we've actually
seen here twice.

It is such a good show.

What's it like out there?
It's really fun.
I got to go at the beginning, which is always good,
because I got it out of the way.
And I don't have to be nervous anymore.
I can just have it plies a pizza with you guys
and talk on the live on the air.
It's great.
Thank you for being with us.
How long have you been?
When did you actually get here today?
I got here.
I was lucky, because mine is kind of a one-off
of a performance.
I just did a number from the show called Soul of a Man.
It's great number, by the way.
I think.
It's me in the spotlight.
And I just sort of, you know, a muscle memory brought it back.
And there I was all over again.
So I came in and rehearsed last night in and out in 30 minutes.
And now I'm just so excited to go and watch from the wings
and see what these kids can do and what team has done
and what's it like to not have the set around you
as you're doing something?
Does it change your dynamic?
Do you just kind of just take your mind to that place?
Yeah, it's funny, because I haven't done this song
in a concert setting before.
It just came back.
I mean, there wasn't a lot of props that I used
during the show in this moment, but there was a big box.
I have a crate that I would jump up, jump on top of
to sing like the big final chorus.
And I still found myself like walking
through the choreography, you know, like hitting my marks
and hitting my numbers and looking where I used to look.
And it wasn't something I thought about.
It's just this wonderful thing that happens when you're doing it.
So like when it finished when you were in rehearsal,
did you just kind of go, just happy?
Yeah, finished in rehearsal.
And all of a sudden I heard a bunch of kids up in the back
of the audience start screaming and cheering.
And I just thought, oh, wow, I didn't even realize
there was anyone in the room, it was just me.
So this was the, like you said, the first time you performed it
not within the context of the musical?
Correct.
And I left the show.
My final performance was I think the end of January 2014.
So it's been a while.
Wow.
Yeah, I mean, I've certainly been preparing and singing it
as I've been driving around in my car and working on it
in my basement and, you know, when I have a free moment.
But there's a big difference between singing in your car
and being on a stage in front of 2,000 people.
What have you been doing since?
Because I'm interested in what's going on with you.
Well, I left the show because my wife and I were determined
to start a family and, you know, an eight-show week schedule
is not very conducive to that.
But we succeeded.
We have a little boy who's two years old.
Congratulations.
What's his name?
His name is Griffin.
He's the best, just turned two.
That's awesome.
So, Fatherhood has really been an amazing thing.
And I love it.
I've managed to work as well.
I did a TV show on Fox last year called Minority Report.
Yes.
It was, you know, a cool sci-fi cop show.
And Mr. Spielberg produced it.
That was neat.
And I've had a few little plays around New York, sort of,
things that are not as high profile as the Kinky Boots
or the American Idiot.
But, you know, important nonetheless.
We've asked this of almost all of our guests
in the pre-show tonight.
And you can't let somebody like you sit here
and not ask these following questions.
There's two.
Number one, what's your bucket list role?
I mean, it used to be Romeo in Romeo and Juliet.
I've aged out of that one.
I, the other one I always say is Pippin and Pippin.
We saw that last year.
That one melted my brain.
Okay.
So then let's flip the script.
As a spectator, what shows on your bucket list?
Oh, wow.
I want to go, I want to see my, the very first show I ever saw
on Broadway was Starlight Express.
And I want them to bring that back.
And let's just throw this in there.
That's my new dream role is, is,
we're gonna put out to the universe.
Starlight Express.
We were just talking earlier on the show.
If you don't put it out there to the universe,
it's not gonna happen.
I totally believe that.
Now, I don't know how good I am on Rollerblades.
And I don't know how impressive that is anymore.
In this day and age.
But can you even get Rollerblades?
You just do it on regular skates.
I can't do Rollerblades.
I can't do Rollerblades.
I would die.
But you put me on four wheels?
I think I'm gonna be good.
Awesome.

We were just talking about Roller skating the other day.
And I was DJing for many, many years.
And I retired from the business.
But I said the one thing I would come out of retirement for
is if a local skating rink said they want to do a retro night.
I said, you do that.
I will come out of retirement.
And I will do 70s and 80s music all night long.

It's like crazy.
I'm going to sleep for like four days, aren't I?

Yeah.
What did you, like, in the back of your mind,
where you like, they're totally going to call my name?
Or were you just like, you know what?
I can't even be in that spot in my head.
I couldn't even imagine it.
It's crazy.
I'm just a sophomore.
So like, you know, all these people, I'm like, oh, my gosh.
You know, these people have been nominated before.
And it's just...
I don't know.
I was completely caught off guard.
It was crazy.
Were you the youngest one in the category?
I'm not positive, but I know I am one of the younger ones.
And you went through the audition judging process this week
as a feature actor, correct?
No.
A feature actor doesn't do that.
That's just the best actor in actress.
Oh, okay.
So is featured more like supporting...
Supporting actor would be...
Featured's more like supporting singing and stuff
and kind of a bigger role.
Featured's like the random person who walks on stage
like four times during the musical.
And like gets...
And you got hardware out of it?
Yeah.
So it's obviously important.
Yeah.
You know, don't diminish that.
Oh, definitely not.
Those are my favorite roles, for sure.
Nothing's heavy, too, in it.
Yeah.
Okay.

We're not nominated this year.

But still, how are you feeling right now?
You guys kind of match.

I would wear that like in my everyday life if I could pull that off.

I made my prom tux my CS right out of denim.

I mean, when I was in high school was the first time I ever went to a musical.
And I got to see Phantom at the performing arts center in downtown Fort Lauderdale where I grew up.
And just walking in there and seeing that across the top.
There's talk about that about the brand.
Well, it's kind of fascinating because I've been with the company now six years.
And I grew up a performer.
I was a musical theater performer.
And for me to work for Play Bill is just, I kind of pinch myself every day because I grew up reading that magazine and collecting them and having boxes under my bed.
And I run the education program for Play Bill.
So it's, it's absolutely amazing.
And for me to be able to sponsor tonight with the official Play Bill for the high school awards was just fantastic.
And how awesome is that?
It's like, yes, I was nominated for an award.

How was it out there?

So for me to be here, and I was here last night for the rehearsal.
I got to, I'm friends with the director for J.J. Pierce High School who do Heather's.
So good.
So it's so good.
So I got to sit through their rehearsal process and see some of the other schools.
And for me to see the camaraderie with the students, especially.
It's so thrilling to watch how special it is that they're all applauding for each other.
They're all rooting for each other.
And it's just really a special moment for me to be able to witness.
What anything going on with people that we need to know about anything coming up?
Yeah, so we have a really cool product called PlayBuilder, which is somewhat new.
And it's a way for anything that falls under non-professional theater schools in particular to make their own playbills for their school performances.
So it's something that was not available to schools and it now is you can sell ads to huge fundraising tools for schools.
And so we're all across the United States and we're trying to get more schools involved and sell ads for their programs.
But to have a playbill in your school musical is.
Absolutely.

Best choreography in the Heights.
Let's talk about this for a minute.
Because anybody that knows anything about anything, especially when it comes to theater,
in the Heights is one of those productions that comes with a certain weight to it.
And we talked about this in the pre-show, because if you don't have in the Heights,
you don't have Hamilton.
And which is going to be here in two years.
I know I'm freaking out myself.
So when you guys found out like this was a thing, because this is choreography is a big deal,
and especially in a production like this.
When you found out this was the production you were going to be working on,
was there any apprehension to it, or were you just like, you know what,
we're going in full bore, and y'all can get on the train or get off the train,
because the trains leave in the station.
A little bit of both, because our director, our technical director,
G, Mr. G, he kind of planned out he was like, all right,
we have three people that we're doing this with, we have,
we have to do hip hop.
We know what we want to do, and we have to start learning it now,
so we can be teaching them, and he kind of had like us driving that
to like teach the rest of the members of our cast how to do what we're going to be wanting to do,
because it's very specific on what kind of dance it is in the Heights.
Did you really come up with your own style to it, or was there any reference material that you used?
Well, personally for hip hop, I move reference to a lot of Beyonce videos,
because I love her in general, but somebody would just be like,
how I would feel or what kind of moves I think would look best in certain parts,
what for hip hop at least though.
And then I know Dan and I were in charge of salsa,
and so I do ballroom, so I have experienced like the Latin stuff,
but we had to like look at certain moves and like,
and with ballroom though, especially when you talk about salsa
and trying to combine that with ballroom, there's an interesting style difference too,
because with ballroom is very, very fluid and very,
but with salsa, there's a lot of stick to and move, stick to move.
So how did you mend those together?
Well, sorry, I should have said, I also did like Latin.
Fair enough, fair enough.
But I think that we just, we had to tell the cast continuously to get out of the comfort zones
and to just let loose, which they can do, you know, in general,
they just do that, but when you tell them,
when they're giving choreography and they're forced to like fall steps,
it can seem to get into your head and so, yeah.
So we just had to remind them that like, you're having fun
and you're just dancing with your friends, which is what a lot of it was.
How long did it take you to write everything?
To write all the choreography and get it all mapped out before it was ready?
Considering that there were like maybe five different numbers that we had to choreograph,
it was like we would take maybe a week to actually figure out what we wanted to do
for that certain number, and then it'd take another two or three days to actually teach it.
Yeah, because we would split it up by like eight counts.
Every song we would have our, we'd break down the eight counts and we'd be like,
okay, this is where they'll be moving from here to here,
and this is what moves we want to be teaching them so they can start dancing.
Because we started with basic moves.
Like for salsa, we started with basic moves to teach them to get them
in the comfort of what it feels like to free salsa.
Because in the Heights, it's a club scene and it's to let loose into like,
these are not like...
So they have to make sure that they know the steps so that they can actually...
Yeah, like steps that they're regulars in this club,
that they're not just random people coming out and not knowing salsa.
During the run, once lights come on, curtain goes up.
How much time did you spend watching from the audience versus watching from backstage?
Oh, very, very, a lot.
A lot, which way?
A lot in the audience.
Because we are very nitpicky, because especially since at the beginning...
We have won the award, I would hope so.
Yeah, we have.
Because we wanted to look good at this award.
But like at the very beginning of the rehearsal process,
we weren't even on stage, so we would practice a lot of the times
in like a band hall or an orchestra room.
So the spacing was definitely off.
Especially when we got our set on stage.
And so we had to really kind of...
We would be very...
So we would be in the back of the auditorium screaming at them saying,
Hey, this isn't tight enough.
Well, but not during performance, I'm sure.
But I'm talking about during performance, when it was time and they were...
There was an audience in the room.

How much time do you spend researching the technology
versus just trying to work with what you have?
Researching, I spend, I mean,
there are great resources online.
There's an awesome Facebook group.
So they're always putting out new information
about new things.
With, you know, phones, you have manuals
to everything at your fingertips.
Rentals are becoming cheaper.
So you can rent, you know.
Talk right into that thing.
Oh, right.
There you go, much better.
You can rent newer equipment for productions.
And I'm so blessed to be able to work
with the Dallas Children's Theatre.
And then eventually an extra on some shows
that Dallas Theater Center as well as other places
where I have, you know, first-hand access
to these awesome new technologies
where you can learn more about integration
and Jason Lent, she's taught me almost everything I know
about, you know, the newer lighting technologies
that are just becoming to dominate Broadway
and theaters worldwide.
So when you knew you were doing Greece,
but it was like the one thing you're like,
I've got to get my hands on that to make this work.
Well, the awesome thing was before that,
so last year, our lighting system had about three lights
that worked.
It was not good.
And so, wow, been there, done that.
Yeah, so we were very fortunate to go all the LED
over the summer.
I was some awesome new stuff.
And so I was super excited about that.
And then I found it, it was Greece.
And I was like, that's awesome.
Everyone knows the story.
So that way, I can just focus on, you know,
drawing the story forward with the lighting design.
And it was just awesome being able to work with everyone.
Did you just take from your own vision
about it was, was there anything you borrowed
from anything you'd seen before?
Most of it was just my own vision.
I have, you know, awesome mentors.
Most of the Aaron Johansson, who did DSM's Greece,
he designed at the Children's Theater last summer.
And he's, you know, one of my awesome mentors.
I work with him and I'm gonna be as assisted
on quite a few shows next year.
And he's just stylistically, he's been amazing
and influencing me and what I've been able to do.
And I think it showed with the show.
Where are you at in your high school career?
I'm a junior.
So you got one more year?
Yes, I got one more year.
Do you know what's next for the school
or they're having that?
We're doing seven rides with seven brothers coming up
in the fall.

And then we'll do other things throughout the year

Because when I first set foot on that campus
on the years ago, it was like that school
was the size of this table.
There was nothing to TCU.

And we attended the Armed Forces Bowl there
this past year, and how big that campus is now.
And it's just kind of engulfing everything around it.
Continuing on with theater studies?
As a side thing, but I'm going in a pre-med.

I've definitely been checking out all my schools
as an option, like for a hobby or possibly even a minor.
Because I mean, technical design is such a useful skill
to have.
It's such a useful minor, especially working through college.

Another strong year for Walk to Hatchee.
Remember, they had a pretty good, strong year last year.
Yes, they did.
Yes, sir.
We won Best Musical with our production of Spam a lot.
And one of the funniest moments.
In the history of this show.
And we're coming up on seven years.
So the fact that when you guys found out it was just like,
yeah, we're not going to win.
We're just hanging out.
What was that?
And then it won't go on.
It was amazing.
It was hilarious.
I just, I laughed for like two days.
So Best Orchestra for Curtains.
Yes, sir.
Hannah and I are both in the band department, as well as a theater
department at Walk's Hatchee High School.
I play trumpet, she plays flute.
And it's truly an honor to not only win
in a performance that we did for Curtains,
but for our band department to win.
When we've been nominated for so many years before.
How many people were in the orchestra for this?
Oh, we had too many to count.
We had so many.
So a full blown orchestra, that's what's telling me.
Oh, yes, sir.
Half of our went ensemble was in the orchestra.
That's awesome.
Yes, sir.
Yeah, more people than they had in the cast.
Oh, our band department, as a whole, is amazing.
Crazy, huge, I think.
See, as a band kid, this warms my heart.
Because it's right now we're in a tough place
with performing arts in general.
That when I was a kid, you had to take at least one semester
of a performing arts class to graduate, and seeing
and seeing a lot of things that are trying
to shut them down around the country.
It's stuff like this that makes the case that these things
have to stay alive.
Because when I was a kid, I was a tiny kid.
I know it looks weird, but it's true.
I couldn't play sports.
I couldn't do anything like that.
So music was my outlet.
And that's kind of made me who I am.
And the fact that you guys are here tonight
and you've got such a huge program,
that's a good thing to me.
Where are you at in your careers?
Well, I'm a senior in high school,
so I'll be graduating on June 2nd.
Ah, that's the day Wonder Woman comes out.
I'm a junior.
I'll be graduating next year.
OK, so where are you going?
I'll be going to Tyler Junior College
for the first two years to get my basic stuff.
Nothing wrong with that.
It's her medicine's going on.
Is that her medicine?
All right, you may run into his second cousin.
And that what she technically is.
Well, she's a cousin's wife.
Cousin's wife's daughter.
So you're second cousin once removed?
Your friends have always been here.

So you're getting ready for your senior year.
Have you thought about college?
Yes, sir.
I have, actually, I have two polar ideas.
Major wise, I even want to do something
with liberal arts, with history and government
and economics and law.
Or I'm actually going to go into musical theater.
It's just a matter of.
Where are at?
My top school right now is Texas State.
Ah, I just blanked out.
Down in San Marcos?
San Marcos, that's what I was looking for.
Used to be West Texas A&M or something like that.
You saw West Texas?
South West Texas.
Yeah, I didn't aim like this long.
Yeah.
And now it's Texas State, which now is officially a college,
which was a fictional college 20 years ago
when necessary roughness came out.
That's right, that West State.
That was the name of the school.
It was a Texas State Armadillo's
because Lord knows we can't stereotype.
Been up in this state?
All right, so we've got two questions we're asking everybody.
All righty.
Question number one, from a performance standpoint,
what's the top of the list that if you had any choice
of any show to perform in, because you guys
are instrumentalists, what are you going to perform in?
Oh gosh, that's instrumentalists are vocalists.
Whichever you want to do.
Oh wow, okay, that's hard.
Does it have to be a singular performance
or can it be like whatever you want to do?
Okay.
It's your world, I'm just paying rent.
And for me, my top three musical performances
to perform in and play a lead role.
Okay.
And either be Aveda.
Oh, bold.
Phantom of the Opera.
Always great.
And of course Hamilton.
But I'm telling you, two years cannot get here fast enough
when it comes to this town.
I'm so excited.
I'm looking to see it as soon as I've seen it.
Have you guys watched the PBS documentary they did?
Yes, I did.
I was just like, that was 90 minutes.
I was like, nobody bothered me.
This is happening.
I was going, I'm still blown away.
Like I listened to the soundtrack,
just by getting ready in the morning.
And it's incredible.
My top choice would be Les Miserables.
I saw it on Broadway when I went to New York two years ago.
And I was in tears.
Phantom of the Opera, because I've grown up with that.
And oh gosh, I'll even probably, I'll even know.
There's just so many out there that I just love so much.
All right, so second question then.
As a spectator, what's at the top of your list to see?
Oh, oh, oh.
That's definitely something I had to think about.
We are stumping these kids tonight, sir.
That's not easy.
Well, for me personally growing up listening to nothing
about Broadway, it was my first music genre
to be introduced to.
I think any show that you are less
enough to afford and can go see any show is spectacular.
Fair enough?
Yeah.
Oh my gosh, there's just so many out there right now.
But they actually just went to New York and saw some.
I did, I saw something rot in on Broadway.
That's going to be here next month, I believe.
That musical was hilarious.
Very much so can you work with it?
Amazing.
But oh my gosh, there's just so many.
When I was in New York, there was just Broadway
show, or Broadway show, or Broadway show.
We were talking about that in the pre show.
Both times, like I was good in New York,
they were both on Monday nights.
And so everything's dark.
I'm like, well, I'll just go walk around for a while.

Well, we were both in the cast.

Very involved with music.
Yes, definitely the music theater department.
It's full of all different kinds of people.

Geeks are nerds with social skills.
That's the difference.

Chris Hardwick said it, I believe it.
But we're just one big happy family.
We're all together doing what we love most.

And so that's what goes into, that's
how we sing our music is through love.

That's where it all comes from anyway.
So you only got like a 45 minute drive home.

When you're actually going to get to sleep,
like Tuesday.

Yeah, we're like really excited right now.
Yeah, we're kind of like full of adrenaline right now.
I just, I mean, that crowd has to be on fire.
Oh, yeah, for sure.
So exciting.
We weren't expecting to get too back to back.

So it's just, it truly is a blessing.
Yeah, it really is.
And last year we were nominated.
So we were all backstage for most of the show.
But this year we actually get to experience it.
Yeah.
So it's been, it's been awesome.
Yeah, it's been really good.
It's really cool.
Talk, because you guys were up for a lot last year too.

Talk about the feeling last year versus the feeling.
Was it a little bit more chill for you this year?
Because you know, like we've been through this bit before.
Or is it, were the same nerves there?
Was it the same intensity?
I think last year it seemed like we had a lot more at stake
because we've been nominated a lot for Best Musical,
but we've never won it.
And it seems like this was our year.
This was our time.
And we put it all out there on the stage.
And to come at the end of the result with Best Musical
was such one of the greatest feelings
that we could have ever had felt.
So how much school is left?
Like, she's done.
I'm done.
She's done.
I'm still in school.
That feeling of, especially as a senior,
you get like two weeks before everybody else.
And I just, I remember that moment I got out of the building.
I was walking to my car and I was like, holy crap,
it's just got real.
Yeah.
Like I'm really done.
Yeah.
Like graduation was just like another day.
And of course I almost tripped walking up the stage.
Yeah, that's the first time I've ever admitted that.
I've never admitted that before.
Nobody knows because I was so graceful.
I caught myself.
It was beautiful.
But I almost felt flat on my face.
I've known it for 20 years.
That's never come up.
That's true.
That is true.
So you've just got another week to go?
I have another week of exams.
See, we can get out to middle with June.
But we didn't start till after a Labor Day.
But we also had extra days that a lot of the sections
of the country don't because I grew up in South Florida.
So you've got Jewish holidays as well as everything else.
So that kind of offsets everything.
But you know, but still, I feel like if you get out
before June, it's just weird.
That's just the way I grew up, I guess.
It's part of the course for us.
All right, so the two mandatory questions you've already
heard the first one.
You said you already knew the answer to the first one
because I got to look up.

Well, because in a lot of cases, how do I pick?

are going to be receiving the scholarships tonight?

before you got here?
No, not at all.
Tracy Jordan just told me, hey, I
want to give you $5,000 scholarship.
You were like, whoa.
Damn, I think I didn't work that into my schedule.
Yeah.
First of all, Tracy Jordan, incredibly
high quality human being.
One of our favorite people that we
talked to on the show over a year.
So where are you going to college?
I am going to call in for the first year.
And then, yeah, no saving money is good.
And then I'm transferring to Emerson for musical theater.
Very nice.
And then I'm going to the University of Texas at Austin.
That's the first one of those tonight, sir.
The very first longhorn of the evening.
It's kind of surprising.
That is kind of surprising.
So I still continue to musical theater major.
If I can speak English, that would be wonderful right now.
I'm actually majoring in theater design and technology.
Oh, nice.
And we've been talking about technology quite a bit tonight.
It's just amazing how fast the technology is moving,
especially in the high school level.
I saw a buddy of mine, his daughter,
had a couple of musicals last year.
And going in and seeing all the things
they had done with it, which I wouldn't even think possible
on a high school level.
And you guys are just telling it.
It just amazes me.
So is theater design what you were doing
to lead to this point?
OK.
They're calling me, they keep calling me.
That's like telling him all the time.
Yeah, I know.
But I don't call it you because you're old, although you are.
But it's a whole different deal.
See, there's that.
There it is.
So where was your forte?
I actually started.
Talk right into that thing.
Oh, sorry.
There you go.
I actually started acting.
And then once I got to high school,
I started doing tech as well.
So I get help out with tech for everything.
And yeah, and then it kind of transformed
into the musical theater.
So yeah, any aspect of theater, I'm there.
Do you have one that you prefer?
I personally like musical theater, but.
From the technical side or from the onstage side?
Oh, that's hard.
I think on the performance side, yeah.
Because a lot of people don't understand what the technical
crew goes through.
Oh, yeah, they go through so much.
Especially with the sound, because we all
have to have microphones and like musicals.
And we don't balance it out with the band.
It's crazy.
And the fact that as an onstage performer, more often than that,
you at least get a couple of minutes to breathe
every once and again.
The tech crew, they're on all the time.
You know, when we go see, when we go to musicals,
I'm always fascinated, especially at another venue
that we go to in this town, where you can actually sit
behind where the sound board is.
And I tend to get distracted because I'm more fascinated
with what's going on with the dude at the board.
I get distracted from the musical itself.
And a classic example of this we saw earlier this year
was the curious case of the dog.
The curious incident of the dog on the nighttime.
What that dude goes through, because the technology
in that show alone, I thought it was at a YouTube concert
at one point.
There's so much going on at the same time.
And I love being able to, you can also, that opens it up
to a bigger audience too.
That's like, it's not just, oh, here's my thing.
And here's what I'm doing.
There's so much to do and see that's more than just
what's going on in the stage.
And that's what I kind of dig about it.

Oh, that's a hard question.

How do you, at that point, when you get that call,
how do you prepare yourself to receive it tonight
on stage?
I got an email, and I honestly thought it was fake.
I asked, I went to my director,
and asked if it was real.
That's an, wow.
Yeah, that would be kind of awkward.
I thought it was spam, or something.
I did, because the opening line said,
contractulations instead of congratulations.
So I thought it was spam, or something else.
Oh, that's shady.
That is.
Well, not officially now, because you've got the thing in your hand.
Right.
I like my money.
Exactly.
Yes.
AC, here's a lot to pay for.
So I believe, where are you guys going?
I'm going to Tyler Junior College.
Nothing wrong with that.
I'm going to Oklahoma City University.
That's the third Oklahoma City University tonight.
I'm a big fan of that section of the country.
I'm like, Oklahoma City is a very hip town.
Very much enjoyed spending some time there.
Sucks when the wind kicks up in that town.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah, they're not enjoyable.
But there's a lot to do.
Big fan of that brick town area.
Oh, good times over there.
So any productions that you guys did this year
that you want to talk about?
I was in Beauty and the Beast, and it was honestly
some of the most fun I've had in musical theater.
That was, we saw that.
Was that last year we saw it?
Yes.
Oh, was it early this year that we saw it?
Oh, that was last summer.
That it was in this town.
I like the musical.
I still have a special place in my heart
for the original animated film, which
is why when they did the film this year,
I was like, these people don't play with me.
Do not play with me.
Because that's a half an hour longer.
And I really dug it.
I was like, I'm OK with this.
My favorite way to be this year for Bye Bye Bernie.
I got the choreograph.
I got to be in a quartet.
And I got to just play various roles.
And it was pretty fun, especially
when you're a baritone and you sing 10 or 1.
Oh, wow.
Talk about stretching yourself a little bit.
Yeah.
This year for the musical, we did Shrek
and I was Fiona in that.
But the most fun I've had this year
was our one act play.
And we did a mid-summer night's dream.
And a lot of people think Shakespeare, not that hilarious.
But once you take it and you revamp it,
like we said, ours in the 1920s,
and had voodoo creatures for the fairies.
It was so cool.
So I love it when you can do this.
Especially with Shakespeare.
And we went to state with it and we placed forth in the state.
Nice.
Isn't mid-summer night's dream
is that the one that Weedon did a couple years ago?
Yes.
Or was that much a do?
No, I think.
Oh, wait, no.
I think it was much a do.
Because that's just Weedon did a film version of one
of those two.
I think it was right after the Avengers.
And I like it when you can, especially when you can do it well.
Because I've seen it done badly.
Like when I was in high school, we were studying Beth.
And Noah was hamlet.
And they made us watch this British production of it
where there was no, the set was just nothing.
There was no backdrop.
And everybody was in suits.
And the only good thing is like, I just lost his name.
Kevin Klein was in it.
So I was like, oh, I know who that dude is.
And that was the only thing.
But when you can actually turn it on its head
and make it work and put it within a context,
because a lot of times Shakespeare's tough to digest.
It's the digest, yeah.
But when you put it in the 20s and you put,
I think that's kind of cool.
And then it was especially challenging
because with those kinds of plays,
you have to fit it in a 40-minute time frame.
So you take a five-act Shakespeare play
and you squish it into 40 minutes,
along with bits and costume changes,
and all the other stuff you're required to do.
It's hectic and it's stressful, but it was a lot of fun.
And it got you some money for college.
Oh, yeah.
Nothing wrong with that.
Nothing at all.
All right, you guys get the two questions
that we've been asking everybody.
And we're having a little struggle
with some of the answers on this.
If you've got your choice of a musical to be in, what is it?

Really enjoyed that when we saw that.

Right, we saw that with both this in this season.
Gentlemen's guide is one of those.
I didn't know what to expect when I went into it.
And when I left it, I was like, I love this.
This was amazing.
My side turned into it.

Oh my god.

That's been the one that's been stumping everybody.
It's just surprising.
It is surprising.
If I could see any show, it would have to be
a city of angels with this original cast from the 80s.

I say the original Broadway cast, the Jesus Christ superstar.
You saw that that's an NBC's doing
as their live musical this year.
They're doing Jesus Christ.

Did you have that moment when they're
announcing the nominees and you're just like,

And then it happens, did it register with you right away?

It took a second for me.

We, all the guys who were up for supporting,
we were all at least today and at least
toward the very end, we all became really close,
and we all kind of forgot about the competition.
We had an aspect of it.
So when they announced my name, I was like, wow.
I was shocked.
My job dropped.
And then we went up on stage and I basically
gave my speech to the other nominees.
They deserve it just as much as I do.
And I don't know, it's been a wonderful experience
working with them and everything.
But to answer your question, so sorry.
To answer your question, no, it took me a second
to realize what was happening.

Once Chad was announced, he was my boyfriend.
I was his girlfriend in the show.
So we worked together.
We've known each other since freshman year.
We're very close.
Hearing his name, I started crying, because I'm emotional.
And then hearing my name, I was like, no, wait.
OK, OK, yeah, that's me.
It took me a second.
OK, yeah, that is.
So you were more emotional for him than you were for yourself?
Yes.
There was more emotion when I was crying on stage.
It was more like, oh my god, Chad, one.
This is also my acceptance speech.
So I need to straighten up.
Being on that stage was kind of frightening for me.
Like being in front of house, you don't
realize how big that place is until you're looking out at it.
That's a huge place in there.
Yeah, no, it's beautiful.

So where are you guys at in your high school careers?
I'm a senior.
We're both senior.

I'm going to the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley.

It's a beautiful area of country.
I'm very excited.
I love Colorado.

I will be attending Texas Women's University.
Yeah, they're wrong with that.
I have a friend that just a year ago, just he just
got a teaching degree from there.
So nothing wrong with that at all.
Although, I probably have to change the name of it now,
I would think.

Part of me thinks this is not going to happen.
It's been around for a very long time.
I kind of like it.
A beautiful area up there.
I mean, when I remember back in the day,
before Denton was really Denton.
Like, if school wasn't in session,
you could fire a cannon through that town and not hit a soul.
Like, it was all about North Texas, and that was it.
And then people started commuting there.
You know, Jason Lee lives there.
Actually did a documentary about Denton
after he moved there.
Because we're assuming they know who Jason Lee is.

and spend an hour on one question
because that's what he does.
So are you guys still going to pursue theater?
Or are you going to do it in different directions?
I am.
As of now, I am going in a different direction.
I'm going a business aspect, a property management and whatnot.
That's my plan right now.
But when people ask me, I do say there's absolutely nothing
stopping me from in a few years, maybe even a few months
to be like, you know what, I miss a little bit.
I might have to go chase it down.
The bug is a thing.

And that's definitely, you can never close yourself off to it.
But there's, I mean, some people, though,
they have that moment, they're like, you know what?
I've done what I want to do and it's out of my system.

It's also smart and thought out.
Like nothing is left behind.
And it's still themed in the time that it was created in.
So you still get that sense.
And it's gorgeous.

And it's a rhapsody in blue.

That song is Kryptonite, the Superman with me.
It just is.
Because we marched it.
And when I was in high school, we marched it one year.
And it was like they had just thrown a bunch of songs
in a blender.

And it just beat me to submission.

It's one of my favorite segments of that film.

What did you know about it before you found it?

I'd actually seen the show when I was in fifth grade.

And one of the guys in the chorus was actually our choreographer for the show.
So, that was pretty cool.
That he came back.
So, I knew the premise of the story and I knew like the character that I wanted to be.
And I knew that it was a big task.
So, we all knew it was going to be a really big undertaking.
It was going to be a lot of hard work.
But we were all really excited.
How did it take you to put everything together?
It took about three or four months.

We didn't know we were going to do it up until, you know, the month that we were auditioning.
Which is kind of weird.

So, you really have a whole lot of prep time.
Not really, but once we were told we were ready.
Where are you at in your high school career?
I'm a senior this year.

I do some work with my charity Kids Kids with Dalson Room Musicals.
So they graciously ask me.
I grew up doing theater.
I went to OCU, Oklahoma City University for Musical Theater.
And it's been a love of mine.
That was a little girl.
So I was really excited to get to do this.
Back in our Fairburg again.
I knew it was going to do that.

It's your world I'm paying rent, my friend.

I'm just a fan of OCU in general.
I've been there a bunch of times on business trips.

When I first got there, I started in 2008.
And by the time I left in 2012 with a thunder with the basketball team
starting that town is really cool now.
So I'm like, these guys don't have to do it.
I can't just like get all the cool stuff.

No, they have the word of everything.

And it's just a neat town to be in now.
But what was it like going away?
I'm then coming back.

I was kind of in limbo.
I thought I was going to move to Chicago and do improv and all this stuff.
And then my dad ended up passing away.
And my whole life changed.
And I ended up now.
I'm running his charity.

Our show was on Saturday nights back then.

And it was just one of those.
How do we even deal with this?

Because I mean, I listened to him pretty much my entire life.

I always kind of knew I would end up running the charity at some point.

But kids kind of gave me something to live with.
And my nephew was also a recipient one year.

You guys, what was your experience with it even before you had to deal with it?
Oh, I heard it was kind of a boring show.
Like when you think of home, you think like it's like fine.
And so when we heard we were doing it, we were like.

But then after we began production of the show, we were like, oh, we got this.
Like, this will be good.

I know we were kind of scared because it was like a classic.

But I mean, we had a lot of fun when we started for sure.
But was it really worrying about living up to the classic?
Or were you just like, you know, we're going to do what we're going to do with it?
Um, I think, I mean, I think as we started to go, like we realized we're like, you know,
I don't know.

So, um, I don't know.
So like we knew that we were trying to do like the Hugh Jackman version.
That was like the new updated one that everyone was talking about.
And our director was like, like, we don't want to do that boring show that everyone sees.
We want to try to reinvent it and make it new.
And so I guess we kind of did that.
We already tried.
I tried to.
Yeah.
How much research did you do on costuming before you started designing them?
So much.
So much.
Yeah.
Research is a big thing for our director.
She like, we can't produce our own product without knowing what other people have done.
Um, so we researched for probably two weeks before the show.
And our entire costume crew does research and turn it in and we go through it.
Um, and we really narrow it down to like what we want to take inspiration from.
And where was that?
Um, everywhere.
Like we did.
Gosh, we like everywhere.
Um, our costume crew is was pretty big this year.
How many people were on it?
Oh, I think our costume crew is about 20 people.
Yeah, 20 to 30.
I think so.
So everybody turned in different kind of research.
Some people took research from other Oklahoma productions.
Some people took research from like their grandma.
Yeah, like I know time periods like a big deal with us.
Like we want to make sure everything's time period.
And focus on like it may seem like a little thing, but it's something really important to our director is like shoes.
Yeah.
Cause I know, um, I actually like transferred my sophomore year from a different high school.
And we would just like, a lot of us would just wear character shoes and it wasn't a big deal.
But here it's like no character shoes.
Like we need time period shoes.
And it's crazy how just the little things can really make a huge difference in the whole business.
Now for people unfamiliar to find character shoes.
You guys remember this is going everywhere.
We're all over the world.
So characters shoes are just kind of like a boring little heel usually like two inches.
And it's either like black or tan.
There's nothing to.
There's nothing to them.
Just generic.
It's very boring.
Yeah.
They want to make sure cause people that listen to our show there aren't always people that are in the theater know.
So I want to make sure that we tell everybody what we're talking about.
Like we know.
But you know, we're just the dude sitting in front of you.

And they do an amazing job.
There was rumors of a series that they were going to do.

But that kind of died on the mind.

I love Chicago.
I would love to work on that show.

It was pretty exciting, actually.
We've never gotten an experience before.
This is only my second year at DSM.

It was pretty exciting to accept that award in front of a large crowd.

It was a blessing.
What about that view when you're on that stage?
Looking out on music.
There's a spotlight.
So I just feel like I'm only talking to like five rows.

That's how I always looked at it when I was on stage.
But not when we were up there.

We were up there.
Like I saw everything.
We were up in the balcony sitting and watching.
Then we came down.
I was just like, oh, my goodness.
I was fine.

It was really amazing to see how many people showed up to this.
So how many people does this award represent?
Because it's best ensemble.
This award, there's about 30 ensemble members.
Each one kind of had like their own individual parts in the ensemble.
So it really is an equal award for all of us.
So just for people that aren't well versed in these things.
When we say best ensemble, this is a group of people that aren't the main cast
but they're still integral to what's going on because they enhance what's going on.
Yeah.
Because some people think ensemble and they think it's the whole cast.
I'm like, no, this is just a specific group of people that are integral to the production
as the main cast because they provide a lot of things that that main cast can't.
And I truly feel like we all showed like character and, I guess, individuality in it.
We all told our director what type of character we wanted and he just went with it.
And it really fit who we are in real life.
And we just got to emphasize that.
Anything you want to add to that?
Yeah, it was a very student-led thing because the ensemble is very group activity.
So I think this award is really exciting for all of us because it was the one award that kind of embodies the entire cast.
Where are you at in your high school careers?
I'm a junior.
And I'm a senior and I'm going to be studying acting and minoring musical theater at Sam Houston State University.
Sam Houston State, your cousins.

He's the first Sam Houston State player.

For a lot of the better term, gravity to it because of what in the Heights is.
Because we've talked about it before all my long.

Well, because I feel like if I walk in a room and I say,

But it's kind of hard not to, because it's just so catchy.

Yeah, I think there was an expectation of this musical because it's so well known.
But I think that we were just like really excited to do it since we all just love the musical.

And you got to think like you announced that to the school and the whole school to like,

Because I mean, when we were in school, it wasn't,
there wasn't a lot of mainstream musicals.

So everything that like my high school did was all just older stuff.
So you're like, I'm going to go support my friends.
But I really don't have any investment in this.
Yeah, I think about like when we were in high school, it was right around the time that
Phantom was just, yeah, it was really kind of taking the world by storm at that point.
And we couldn't get the rights to do something like that.
You know, I don't think our school could have pulled it off.
Like we did stuff like the Wizard of Oz and the Nuncracker.
I think we did, I think we did how to succeed in business one year.
And we have great people.
It's just, it's not, there wasn't that proliferation of material to choose from.
And I feel like we are so blessed and lucky at our school.
It's so diverse because we have an IB program.
And we have so many different like great levels and code our school because really
our school is a two year school.
But with the IB, we are so diverse and spread across Plano.
And there's a lot of competition in Plano too.

where they're all lined up on the stage.
Were you guys just in the crowd and came up,
or were you all together on the stage when they announced it?

Kind of a long walk, kind of everybody standing up there.

So, when you found out you were going to be doing Oklahoma this year.
We've talked to some of your classmates about this.
What was your reaction?
Because this is not a contemporary music.
Not at all.
Nor when it takes place, nor when it was written.
I mean, how did you feel about that?

When I first heard of it,
I had not really heard of it actually.
really heard of it actually when we funny first announced it but I mean I was
open to it I watched you know old productions of it and I thought it looked so
much fun and all the dance routines and like you know the energy so you did go
back to some of the previous source material before you really can't win
about it. Well Melanie was our dance captain here so she really got involved with
the dances and everything she's amazing and pivotal this production so shout out
to you real quick. And when you consider the pedigree of the creators of that
show and the other things that they've been responsible for like sound of
music and the king and I and you know brothers and hammers team on exactly
slouch group. Right. Do it all things. Yeah. Yeah. But it's just I mean as
dated as the material may see. Yes. Yes. It doesn't feel like it when it's
performed. Exactly. That's what I was about to say is some of our competition
tonight just some pop rock musical so much fun look like so much fun to be
in and that's something we were like oh it's our senior year we're doing
Oklahoma okay. So we found out we're a little not disappointed but like confused
to say the least and then it started in one thing led to another and here we
are tonight and I do you feel like it stretched you a little bit. Definitely.
Doing a musical like this that's got that older style to it. Definitely. Yeah.
It's four of a challenge. It put us in a different mindset I think. It's
unlike anything we've done before so it was just it was crazy to get in the
mindset of like something that happened so long ago it was written so long ago
and just make it relevant to be interesting for people today. All right so we're
going to ask you the two questions we're asking everybody all night before we let
you go because you've got party and to do. Question number one.
If I give you carte blanche right now what's the role you play?
I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. Oh god. Go with the first
thing comes to mind. What's the thing? Oh god. Okay I'd love to play like the
beast in Beauty and the Beast. Ah very nice. That'd be a good one. Oh man I
honestly have no idea probably. Oh goodness. Probably a movie thing like a
Mia from Lollolanda. That was my mind. Not a bad film. Very much. I like I like
that film because it was a it was both a throwback and a contemporary film
which is very difficult to do. Right. All right so then let's flip the script from
a spectator standpoint. What's what's the one show right now that you want to
see? I want to see how there's a game. I saw how there's a musical done by J.J.
Pierce which is phenomenal. They were up against us for rest musical.
They were phenomenal and I'd love to see it again. So much fun. Yeah. I want to see
in the heights. Yeah. Oh my god. Me too. Oh my god. I was impressed that we had that
that was represented here. Yeah. Yeah. It was amazing. It was there. I'm definitely
interested in seeing that especially after watching that PBS documentary that they did
about Hamilton. Yeah. You know. So cool. All right. Well we don't want to take up too much
of y'all's time because you've got people to celebrate with and they're out all
of their cool and we're still worried. So go enjoy your evening. Congratulations.

year's best. That's true. Wow. I didn't think about it. So I was like, I guess she presented it.
Oh, wait a minute. That was him. Wow. There's all this. This green room just filled with bodies
because this is where the party starts, brother. This is where the party starts.
Oh, we got to be able to get Francisco over here. Is he going to be a lit? We're going to try.
Tracy Jordan is going to sit down with us. So we can't go off here until Tracy sits down because
I feel like Tracy Jordan doesn't sit down with us. No, you did see him. We saw him backstage
at the intermission in this room is what I'm saying. He came here early, early on very in the very
beginning of the show. He was in the room. Tell me Tracy. No, I'm saying since since the show ended,
I keep looking for him to come through the door. Oh, okay. No, I'm just saying Tracy was actually in
the room. Yeah, I started to stand back there behind us for a little while, but you know, since since
the room started to fill up with dignitaries. Well, let's let's talk about what's coming up while
we're waiting. Tomorrow, we're going to go to see a concert, but Saturday night, we are going to be
live at Garland High School for the real owl film festival. This is a high school film festival
that they put on every year. High school students making films, trying to find their their career path,
maybe in the entertainment industry. We're going to be there as industry judges. Can I put that
on my business card? I'm an industry judge. Let that sink in folks. Let that sink in for us.
They're letting us judge stuff. We're also going to be doing the show for about an hour. And then
we are going to be presenting the awards that the judges give out for awards. Again, because we
are now experienced presenters. We are now experienced award presenters officially. You can check out our
Facebook live video for that. Don did a great job on that. He actually showed everything from the
from the stage. The enormity of that stage also looks bigger from the others. Yeah. We're just like
how can people cover like how do you block this entire stage and dog gawd it if they don't?
Kind of like what I said about Bucky's and has a horizon. Yeah. And then Sunday night we'll be back
in studio for the WWE backlash pre show. There's five matches on that call. I think that's going to
change. I think I think I'll be a two hour paper view, which I'm fine with. Don't get me wrong.
There he is. The man of the hour, the tower of power is joining us. Hey guys, how's it going?
Francisco, it's so great to see you. Are you are you at the point now where things are starting to
decompress or are we still a couple hours away from that? You know, I there's still a couple things
I got to do. There's some backstage interviews that we're doing with best actor, best actress and
best musical winners. And then after that, I still have to go to my office do a little stuff on
the computer and then head home. So let me ask you why we've got you here because I'm always
interested in this. Yeah. Do you know who the winners are beforehand or is that kind of like a
price waterhouse thing like they seal it all. They bring it in. You don't know until everybody else
finds out. So you know, whenever you're doing stuff, you know, back, you know, on the back end,
there's some things that we do know beforehand. So there is a list, you know, however,
it's very top secret. You know, only a couple people get to see that because I do all the publicity
for the organization. I might know a thing or two, a thing or two, but you know, when it comes down
to a couple of the winners, those are, you know, nobody knows. Except for the people engraving the
trophy. Right. And who does those by the way? That's a gorgeous piece of hardware. You know, I
don't know. I have no clue, but they're beautiful. I loved how, because when we were tearing down
the move back here, I actually would see that the camera on the inside, how they had the stage set
up and the award was on the big screen. Looks awesome. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, it's a wonderful thing,
you know, seeing the trophy and then, you know, the kids, you know, the students, you know,
holding them and just what it means to them, you know, do you get to go and see any of the
musicals yourself? Unfortunately, not because, you know, we're here, you know, working on all the
productions that we're doing. And also, you know, working on the back end of all these wonderful
programs that we have, but we have a whole team of multiple judges that do that year round.
And how many judges were there this year? I don't know, but Tracy Jordan, who's going to be?
There he is. Yeah. See, if you're good, this is the tag team champions of the high school musical
world right here. Oh, okay, wait a minute. We can wait if you need just the way. Can you hear me?
I, we have you. I'm just supposed to show that somebody else needed you before you need to sit down
with us. Go ahead. Just a minute or two. Yeah, I know. I mean, if he needs to go, we can wait.

when we were Facebook lining. So you guys are going to start with your prediction. We know we're
just lucky, John. Yeah, we're. I don't know, but I think I feel like you guys, you know, you have to
make some sort of prediction, like the podcast crew prediction. Oh, that would be a long.
Who who ended up getting the most awards tonight? Because there's three high schools. I can say
that had multiple awards. Our man walks a hatchy and there was another one. It was a close
tie between the three of them, but I don't know who it came up, you know, who came out top.
I think a lot of people like see just seeing the looks on people's faces as they were coming back
here. Like I had no clue like we had. There was somebody else that had a first time that
Byron Nelson pulled up picked up a couple tonight. Yeah. And there was I liked when we were talking
to some of these kids that were like, yeah, we've never even been nominated before and just to be
here and be in the building. This is and we got to talk to some of the the scholarship recipients.
And Plano East had a couple of awards here. And we gave one to Plano East. Oh, you've got to go,
you got to go. Always it's an honor to talk to you, sir. Well, thank you guys. And we'll see you

The cabinets making it happen. This is one of my favorite parts of the evening. It's the very end.
When you see everybody that's in here and they're getting all their interviews and taking their
pictures and shaking their hands and kissing the babies and all that good stuff.
I think now is really the exhale starts to begin because you know what we've got through the awards
show. Everything went without a hitch. Everybody was happy. Everybody stoked. Filled it up again.
I'm going to sleep like a newborn child when I get home. I'm just hoping to get home before it's
tomorrow. That's my goal. I don't know if that's going to happen. It probably not.
That's okay. We'll be stopping on Ville Waterburger, I think, before I get to the house.
I've said it before and I'll say it again. I feel bad for people who live in areas of the world
that do not have Waterburger. Yeah. I pity them. I pray for them. I genuinely, I genuinely
wait for them. I look back at my own life and go, I went 22 years without Waterburger.
What was I thinking? What was your first experience like with that? I don't remember.
I can tell you the Waterburger. I think that it was. I think that it was the one that used to be
over by when I lived with the future. I was off of La Prada. I think it was there. I don't remember
for sure. But I will say this for a while when I was doing mobile DJ work. I had a routine because
remember, more often than not, I live by a policy. I have a code. Right. Going to the gig, it was always
sonic and it was always involving a Route 44 ocean water. And then coming home, it was always
Waterburger. It was always number two. Don't need double cheese. What a size. That was always the
routine because it was the only thing left open at that time. I couldn't have gone to jack in the
box or anything of its ill. But Waterburger is just next level. Yeah. It's next level. And it
will probably be getting a lot of patronage this evening. I'm just not just by us. Yeah. Yeah.
There will be busloads of kids pulling up to to Denny's and things of its ilk.
I have to get me. I mean, catfaper's ill might get some. You know what? Yeah. It's not far away
from here. No. But I'm not sure how late they're open in the middle. Some of them are 24 hours.
Some of them. I don't think the one that's closest to here is. I think that one's not. No. Really?
No. I think the one over off of Cedar Springs is probably open 24 hours. That's fair.
But this one I think probably is going to be closed by the time the majority of this crack is.
But we also want to remind everybody there's two more shows in this season of Dallas Summer musicals.
Starting next week, we just talked about it. Circus 1903. Was it the design team behind Pippin
that's doing this? Is that what it was? Did the elephant? Yeah. No. No. It was like a major
effects house that did the elephant. That's what's wrecking my brain. And then in July,
we'll be the bodyguard. And I said it before the show. I'll say it again. I'm really looking forward
to that. I'm getting kind of enthusiastic about that one. And then come the fall.
We do it all over again, brother. We do with the color purple.
Gee, I wonder what shirt I'm going to wear that night. I would say go with something of a mob.
I might get a new one for that one. So you know, and again, DSM, you think you go through a season
and you go, it's not going to get better than this. And then it does. They just keep raising the bar.
You think about the things in the last three years that we've had a chance to be a part of.
I'm just trying to get so bored. He was like, he did, he did the most creative dash across
the room I've ever seen. Like he got completely low to the ground and somehow didn't break his
stride. And another incredible night. Don is keeping an eye on our potential guests to come sit
back down with us. Oh, your wife did say, hmm, what a burger. Does she want me to pick her up
anything? Jules, that's on you. I'll relay the message. Your husband wants to know if you want
him to bring home water burger. I would say that that's never, that interest never know. Well,
she may have eaten already. I'm sure she probably has. I was going to stop by the golden arches on
the way, but I just, I still wasn't hungry, but when I got here, because I got here way before
you guys did. Yeah, and I didn't have time. So I was like, I can tough this out. I can't tough this
out. So I've been weighing the options. Cold pizza sitting behind us or fresh water burger
on the way home. I've got cold pizza. Well, I had cold pizza for lunch. So I'm going to tell you,
I'm, I'm now an ambassador for olive oils. I'm just going to say it. I had that pizza even better
the next day. I had pop and mervis. I'm hot and cold with the pop and mervis. Well,
they want to sponsor the show. I'm on fire. They did, but well, they're doing the taco ground
day pizza right now. They do that around thinking of my gronday. That's a weird idea. I give it
something. You know, you kind of up your game whenever you completely forego to made a sauce on
your pizza and you throw down refried beans as your base on your pizza. No, no, no. I respect my
wife too much for that, sir. You got to try it. No, it's absolutely. No, I don't. I will say those
of what we're talking about. Apparently we're having pizza talk right now. We went from water burger
talk to pizza talk. I'm going to say something and I'm on a one man mission right now when it comes to
pie five. They need to bring back the chicken and a lot of pizza they did last year. One of the
greatest. Oh my gosh, to made a sauce. It's a red sauce. Oh, you got me. You got so amazing.
And then they I even tweeted at them and they were like, yeah, we should do that. I'm like,
you're the company. You make the call. You can pull that trigger on that. Your wife says curly
fries. Yes, she is eating, but she cannot say no to water burger. That would be blasphemy.
Oh, if I say that she wants curly fries more. I think she says she had curly fries. Okay,
okay, because they don't have curly fries. But they do have amazing fries. Some of the best in
the business. You ain't one brother. It could this be the biggest time kill we've ever done.
If Tracy says so, what you'll talk about? You don't want to know water burger. No, I'm going to
tell him what's about water burger. He probably may say that sounds like a good idea.
Because when you've been podcasting for over five hours, this is where we wind up.
We need to work on that. Maybe find a way to do some kind of a marathon,
like a charity thing. It'd be pretty dope. Isn't that what Norm does?
The around Christopher radio. He does at water burger. That's what I'm talking. It all comes back
to water. It always all comes back to water burger. But again, we're going to have this show. If
you missed any section of it, we're going to have the whole thing up tomorrow. It'll be in two parts
just like last year. The pre show will be part one. This show will be part two. I'll pull
the intermission out of it. So if you want to listen back, you don't have to fast forward

and Arby's do curly fries. I don't know. I don't know if anybody else. Yeah, that's Arby's does
those loaded curly fries. That's the head for lunch today. Oh, I haven't tried that. Oh,
with the ranch and the bacon bits and the cheese. What's the need in this life? You're not helping.
I'm just saying. You open the door to Arby's. Yes, but I'm talking about Arby's. My stomach is
starting to chew on my spinal cord. You got plenty of time. Plenty of time. There's just this,
there's, I mean, even if we wanted to pack up right now, we really couldn't because there's a lot
going on right now. I've always fascinated you by, especially with the guys and the outfits they
choose. There's some really sharp, we dressed individuals in this building tonight. That,
that, that cat from, from Plano East had accepted the social media award that you spotted the
red jacket. I saw that. Yeah, in the pre-show. Although that first cat that sat down at the
beginning of the, with the yellow thing, that was pretty dope. I'm like, I'm not going to lie to you.
That was enjoyable. Looks like some old school of postry. That was cool, man. Like I said, he pulled
that off cleanly. There's no way I pulled that off. You look at the thing like who shot the couch,
but it looks really dope. If I wore that, people would be like, so when's the next time you're
hosting Family Feud? That's what I would get. Family Feud, nothing. I'm just saying.
Like I said, he pulled it off. There's no way I was going to. You might host a,
a cheap wedding in a, in a city, it was me, in a sleazy park somewhere. There we go. Now he's coming
back. We have to make sure that the man of the hour takes care of his people because he is here.
Tracy Jordan is here. It's the man of the last 18 hours and my dogs are barking.
I'm sure they are. Nobody moves quicker around this point between you and Francisco. You guys are
buzzing all over this building. How are you feeling, sir? I'm feeling great. It's been a long day,
but it is the fastest 18 hour in show business. I'll tell you what. You know, and we were talking
about that earlier. Like this is the show that makes me most nervous every year because of the time
frame. And it's like I've blinked and we've been on the air five and a half hours. Oh yeah.
You know, it's just, it goes so quickly. Look at him yawning over there. He's going,
you're damn right. But this is, this, it's been a great show. You guys always put on an amazing
production. It run, it just runs so smoothly. Everybody's doing what they need to be doing to get
the thing done. Well, I'm glad you think it runs so smoothly. If it is, you make it look easy.
Yeah, you make it look easy. I know it's not easy. I mean, there's a lot that goes into it. I mean,
you're probably going to start, you probably already started planning next year's show already. I'm
sure. Well, you know, they asked the guy who, who runs the, the Rose Bowl parade one year.
They said, so you're going to take a vacation. I said, no, we take a day off and then we go
right back to work for the next year. And that's really true. And, and you got to understand,
this is tonight is the culmination of nine months work by dozens and dozens and dozens of people
who volunteer their time all year long. Judges going out and, and watching these performances,
evaluating these shows, scoring them, corporate partners like Grant Thornton, who's the,
the tabulators for the Tony Awards on Broadway, that tabulate our scores and donate their time.
And, and when we get down to the show and we've got over 600 kids that cross that stage tonight
performing, there are so many moving parts to this. And, and the thing that is truly humbling to
me is the number of people in so many capacities in so many areas across the entire year culminating
in this big long day. And it's actually been a big long week of rehearsals that we've been preparing
for this that do it for the love of the art, for the love of the kids. And because somewhere in
their life, there was a high school teacher who encouraged them along to pursue their dreams. And,
and we're just perpetuating that. Can we talk numbers for a minute? Sure. How many judges?
Oh, we've got a pool of about 60 judges. Okay. How many high schools this year?
This year we, we again, topped our, our number from last year last year. We had 67 schools
participating this year. We had 75 schools and 78 productions. So that's, yeah, I mean, that's,
that's a really good number to be because to have that one per school. Just, and like you said,
this is nine months. It's not like we just decided a couple of months ago. Yeah, let's throw
this thing together. I mean, this is a full-blown production. And it's just so impressive.
And you've so got your day job, you have. Well, this, fortunately, is my day job. Yeah,
but the other half of it, you know, which is DSF. Well, sure, sure. You know, there's the
administration side of this is, I never thought I'd have a desk job. And here I am. But,
not a bad desk job. No, no, no. It pays for itself because in addition to that, I see,
I physically can't be in more than one place at once. But I do see close to 70 shows every year
that are competing with this. I try to get to every one. And so there's lots of nights,
lots of weekends where I'm going to see a show. And I find after a while, if I haven't seen a musical
in a week or so, I start getting withdrawal pain. I know the feeling. So let's just talk this year,
then. Has there been anything that what's pleasantly surprised you the most that you've seen this year?
Well, you know, the amazing thing, wherever you go, the raw material, which is the talent in the
kids, is there. And it doesn't matter where you go, big town, little town. We've, we've introduced
this year friendship high school at in Lubbock, participating with us out on the prairies of West.
Were they the farthest West? They were. Okay. And we also had our first school from Oklahoma
to join us this year. Oh, really? I did not know that. And we go out there not knowing what to
expect. And you know, we see the spectrum of shows that I'd book in the musical today to not
ready for prime time. And we work with those schools to help improve them and up their game. But
you come into some of these towns and not knowing what to expect and the level of talent that is
there. And the teachers have developed, you know, the key is great teachers. And so that's part
of what this program is doing, helping teachers to improve their game, putting the spotlight on
the teachers that are doing that excellent work, and encouraging them, and through sharing that
knowledge and feedback from our professional entertainment industry, professional judges,
helped them get better. And that support that you're giving to the arts is so important. We
talked about this earlier tonight, how, you know, the arts are what made me who I am. I couldn't
do sports. I couldn't do those other things. Band was my thing. That was my creative outlet.
And to see schools that are talking about taking away their their their arts programs, it just
crushes my soul. It's just it's absolutely insane. I talked to a young man. He's valedictorian at
Geier High School up in Denton this past week. He's well, he's a brainiac. He's going into science
and mathematics. And he was speaking to to his school. And he said, I'm not going into the theater,
but I find that my brain works optimally when I give it a creative outlet. He said, if I just
concentrate on numbers all the time, I get I get stale in his thinking. And and so here's a guy
who's working on a genius level saying, I got to do a musical once in a while. Just keep fresh.
But there's nothing wrong with that. No. And that's the creative outlet you need. That's the
creative outlet you should have. Well, you're every every person that goes into the business. One of
these days, you're going to be you're going to be doing a sales presentation or a presentation
in front of a group of people. And that you don't learn out of a textbook. No, sir. Those
academics that you get out of the textbook are important. But you learn to apply them through
something like this. And you guys just keep doing it big. Don, you have some say? No. Oh, okay.
Could you have a question you have to ask? No. Oh, can we come back next year? I would be delighted.
You know, you got a stunning idea. Don has to ask every year because that's the tradition.
Whenever we do one of those, yeah, that was a lot of fun. Yeah. That was a lot of fun.
You guys are terrific. We were telling Francisco just you don't understand the enormity of that
room until you see it from that side of it. And you don't understand the enormity of that stage
until you're standing on it. I remember as a young man of 22, the first time I ever auditioned
on that stage. Oh, wow. And you just feel like when you open your mouth, there's this vacuum
that sucks all the air and volume out of your mouth. It's it's awe inspiring. And two shows left
in this season for Dallas Summer Musical. That's right. That's right. We've got the bodyguard
coming up. And next week we start circus 1903. I'm stoked for both of these things. And we've
been talking about those all night too. How I was not a big fan of the film The Bodyguard. But I
from what I've seen the the song list that kind of a more encompasses her career and Deborah Cox,
who I'm a huge fan of. She's terrific. She's looking forward to seeing her on that stage. Yeah,
the the score to that show is really fantastic. You know, there's a lot of songs that everybody knows.
I'll always love you. And I think it's going to be a big hit with. I'm a big fan of I have
nothing. That's a great song. Yes. And it also encompasses stuff from outside of that through
her whole career, which I think is kind of neat too. And then you guys get a little bit of
breathing time. And then it's time for now that what season are we in right now is the 77. We're
in the 77 season. Okay. That's what 78 comes up in the fall. And a strong 78. A fantastic season
with our new partnership with Broadway across America and our new president, Ken Novis. It's
going to be an amazing season. And of course, that's that's next season. The one after that,
we're bringing in that show that starts with an age. Yep. We've said it all night. We think
there's people we think that there's there's people camped out now. I look, you know,
arts organizations all across the country are using that show Hamilton to drive two seasons
of ticket sales subscriptions. And I will guarantee you by the end of next season,
there won't be a ticket left for Hamilton. No way. And it's I loved how it's caught fire because
it's it's one of those things that when you when you put on a show like that, it's such a huge
gamble because you're you're teaching it the same time as you're performing because it's
basing it's basing itself in the story and how people have just gravitated towards it.
And then you have, well, I'm just saying with Hamilton, you've also got current hip hop artists
that have done it's called out of you've seen the Hamilton mixtape, where it's current hip hop
artists that are doing the songs from the musical. And it's amazing. And so you now you've got a
whole different a crowd that's being brought into it and getting to rediscover the arts,
which I mean, it's just it's a great time to be a human being. That's all I'm saying. Sure.
And you know, of course, you saw Plano East High School tonight doing Lin Manual Miranda's
in the Heights. I will guarantee you, one of these days, you're going to see High School's
doing Hamilton. Oh yeah. Oh yeah. We totally talked about that a lot today. If you don't have
in the Heights, you don't have Hamilton. The fact that Plano East took that musical on.
