Goodbye. It is 10-01 on the East Coast. It is 7-01 on the West Coast.
It is the 7th of April in the year of our Lord 2017. Season 7, Episode 38. 388 times.
This voice has welcomed you to the Clubhouse Podcast. Whether you're live on Ustream, whether you subscribe on your favorite podcast app, we don't care how you listen, we're just glad you're here. It is a beautiful night in Uptown, Dallas.
As we are live for what is always the most unpredictable show we do. This is our brawl after WrestleMania show. Some of you will get that and some of you won't, and that's okay.
My name is Rob. I am the executive producer in the Clubhouse Podcast. And before we go anywhere, and why is my camera on?
My camera should not be on. I don't want video. Oh, now it's upside down.
No, it's the camera still on. This makes me nervous. I don't want that on.
We're going to cover that. Before we go any further, today is a very special day. I want to say happy birthday to my mom.
It is her birthday today up there in the Great Pacific Northwest. So happy birthday, Ma. I know you're not listening, but I'm going to say it anyway.
But I'm not alone because I never ran especially for this show. To my right is my co-host. And a man who is feeling the effects of joining the real world.
He is Chad. Welcome back, sir. I am a happy camper, my friend.
No, sir, you are a happy camp counselor. Let's get it straight. You may be right there.
Also, joining us across from him is the official fact checker of this show. And a man whose hustle is hustling. You may know him as fond dongle, but his mom named him Don Ford.
I'm going to call him Don Ford. Welcome, sir. You're in the wrong one.
You're on that one. I'm back at the diff. You think I know how to use this board by now.
I've only been doing this half of my life. Well, I know we're at the diff, but I want to start off with something kind of. We're not just at the diff.
We're at the festival lounge. Hey, this is the dafter show. This is the big one.
Hey, I want to give a shout out to Elm Street Tattoo, to Deep Elm, to Oliver Peck and channel eight for doing, if you go to my Facebook page, channel like WFA here in Deltsmore. And you go to our page. It's that page.
Yeah, that link is on our page. It's on our page now. I want to thank Oliver Peck for doing that tattoo on Tuesday night.
You know, ironic that it's during the diff of all times. I've been awaiting lists. But it's awesome.
Yeah, I got it. It's awesome, but they did it during the diff because it is a beautiful tribute to the great Gary Murray. Yeah, you know, so beautiful tattoo.
The pair with the with the palm tree and says, you know, 1961, Gary Murray, then night, and night 2016 under there. So the Oliver Peck was a gracious guy. Now he lets film the story where he is doing the tattoo.
And your mission tonight is to get somebody to take a picture of us so you can put it on our Instagram. Of what? Of the tattoo?
Oh, we'll get done. It's got to be on our Instagram. I'll get it on Instagram.
That's why. Okay. But you guys know me at the diff.
I got to go. Bye. Don's going to get his stretch on because he's going to be running around quite a bit because this is the night of DFS honors.
So we're going to be talking to some award winners. We're going to be talking to a lot of what's going on. I do have a surprise for you tonight.
I know. I know. And right behind us on the other side of the wall, front of the show, Devon Pike is going to be hosting karaoke.
So you know, it's always. You remember last last week. I don't want to know.
I'm just saying no. I know you did well last week. I know.
I know. I'm not giving away. But you know, man, surprises.
And you don't need surprises. I don't want to know. I did good last week.
You did a great job last week. You did a great job last week. Got your mic.
All right, fair enough. Because we have our first guest already sitting here. And he's got stuff to do.
So we want to make sure we get to talk about him. Go ahead and introduce yourself to our audience. Get right up on that microphone, sir.
Right up on it. My name is Andrew. I am a tour manager for Stella R2A.
I run the Airstream program. And we travel all around the country making sure people are well on their way to a fun time. And you know, we have a picture.
I'm going to put up on our Instagram just a little bit later. Your Airstream is right in front of us. Yeah, that's it.
Yeah, that's it. And it's a gorgeous piece of equipment. I'm just going to let you know.
Stella R2A, we're very thankful. We've been doing this festival now four years. You guys have been the sponsor of the Dallas International Film Festival.
Every year we've been here. So first of all, thank you. You're very welcome.
And happy to be here. And you guys are doing something. And talk a little bit.
Because you've got the big thing on the side. One limited edition. Chalice equals five years of clean water.
You guys have seen the commercial with Matt Damon. Yeah. How long have you guys been doing this particular project?
So we actually just got a lot more aggressive with our platform this past quarter. So quarter being, you know, starting January. We really started getting a big push.
It's called the Ballad program or the initiative. And that acronym stands for by a lady of drink. What a thanks man.
Appreciate it. I just had a beer delivery. Got to have it in you if you're going to talk about it.
He's just going to live in the dream. Yes he is. He's on the clock.
He's got Stella in front of him. I try to live the brand. Hey.
You got to represent brother. Yeah. I'm right there with you.
What's going back to that. So we've been with water.org for a few years now. Every every year we try to get as much sales out there.
So what it is is our chalice is a for sale. They're all based on a region that can be supported by the water.org program. Why we say one year one one chalice is equal to five years clean drinking water is is just that.
So what it is is that each time someone purchased one of these it's going to give somebody water in that. Water in that country for at least five years. They're building infrastructure to get water from wherever their local their closest water source is to their to their local villages if that is what it is.
So one cool thing is we we partnered with with also Samsung. They developed this this virtual reality program where we interact with people and show them what one woman has done before. She got access to clean drinking water and what her life is like after it which where she's able to you know spend time with her family sell products in local markets.
And just it's almost thirteen trips a day four or five miles to their local water source by themselves. And it's always the women in these areas that have to kind of bear that burden. So cellar 12 has found that water.org has been the best source to be able to get as much you know funds that area is possible.
And obviously you've seen Matt Damon they put him out recently into the into the the world and you know that's now we get more recognition as that. And you'll see the trailer itself is actually designed off the Brazil child. So we have three right now Brazil Cambodia and Uganda and each each child sold the money goes to those respective regions.
And that's okay. That was going to be my next question is how do they determine well you buy the chalice that goes to that region. No.
This is a really really cool thing and the chalices are they're thirteen. I thought so. I didn't want to say an undersell it.
Thirteen bucks it's a gorgeous job. I mean you've seen them everywhere on TV. They're absolutely gorgeous chalices.
A friend of the show doc John Doc Houser. I sent him the picture of your air stream and he was like I'm not in town. Well in your losing out brother you're losing out.
You know we have five of these actually. We have five of them scattered across the country right now. Oh really?
Yeah. And these are what's probably 25 foot. They are exactly 25 foot.
Two look at me doing stuff. Matt the math is strong with this one. It's spatial reasoning is on is on right now.
And I see when we first got here we were probably pulled into loading because we're outdoors on the patio on a gorgeous night. I thought maybe you guys had just brought this out here that you restored your stuff in it. And then all of a sudden things are opening and coolers are being filled.
And I was like this this is a thing like this you could really. I mean talk about all the places that you've been able to take with the air stream. Oh man.
I've been I've been all over the country. Probably some of our bigger events and everybody would recognize is the Kentucky Derby. We're doing our second annual major sponsorship there.
Oh wow. That's here what about a month? That's coming up May 5th and 6th are going to be the two days of the big races that are at Churchill Downs.
We go to races. We go to film festivals. We do food and wine festivals all across the country.
Every city has one and some are better than others. But honestly we love to get our sponsorship out there and make sure people are having a good time. We've changed our hashtags from here in there.
We go from live host beautifully to live with the brand. It's always just kind of a hosting event. So we have chairs that come out.
We set up a big party. Sometimes we're taking pictures inside. Like you'll see we have our chalice shop where we sell in chalices.
And then we'll do virtual reality later. It's always another way to just kind of enhance an environment and just kind of create a party. How long do you with the company?
With with with seller to us going on my second year kind of working specifically with seller to waffle time. Now we'll take we'll take the dip out of the equation because you know we're biased. But outside of this particular festival like what's the one thing that you really really look forward to doing?
Like like festivals in general? Just it just any event in general. Give me a top three.
Top three Kentucky Derby was awesome man. I got to tell you like it's it's going to be a sea of people. It's getting from one place to another between you know main hours is impossible.
Gladly I was stationed right in front of Betline so I can get my money in early. Oh yeah everybody in Louisville knows about horse racing one way or another. So I had probably 20 staff members that were just giving me tidbits here and there.
I ended up picking the horse that came in second once I'm cash. Nice. And we know that what's the biggest role break evens a win.
Dude big time. And I'm not even a big better but I've learned a lot about horse racing now. We go to him a lot.
We're going to be a precness this year. And also what's the other big one? What's that one?
The Belmont. The Belmont of the third of the Triple Crown. We'll be at all three Triple Crown races this year in some capacity.
What else are you looking forward to besides those? You know what? Good question.
After this we've got a couple of events in Arkansas. I actually just left the Miami open. So I'm from Fort Lauderdale.
It's my section of the country. Dude I got to see Nadal play a Federer. Oh nice.
Just the two beasts of tennis and they were there exactly that. They're just ones and artists in Federer and one's just like a machine in Nadal. They're insane to watch.
They're so different in the way in their style but incredible. Incredible tennis. And you probably got to watch one of the last head to head they're going to have.
Because I know that as they say father time is undefeated. It's weird to think about how long those two have played each other. Yeah.
And you know then joke of it got into the mix and. I don't know. Tennis just hasn't gotten the love it's gotten in recent years in my opinion.
Yeah. That's Sangha kid is killing it. That really tall guy.
Yeah. He's probably the biggest tennis player I've seen. Today.
And it's such a different way to watch an event too. Yeah. When you're at a tennis match.
Oh my god. The stadium in Miami is beautiful. It's so intimate.
Like wherever you're sitting you can feel like you can taste the sweat. Which is weird to say sadly. Now I realize that.
Well it's water. Water works into water. We can make a connection.
Cool. That's not a problem. Yeah.
So what about people that maybe can't get to an event? Can they get can they pick the challenges they want from water dart org as well? Or do they need to go to the stellar website for that?
Great question man. So honestly there's so many ways to get to these challenges. It's almost if you if you can't figure it out.
You're something's doing something wrong. So you can go to Amazon and find them. You can go to ballot.
You can type in biladyadrink.com. You can type in water dart org. You can type in stellarartwa.com.
All those different websites can direct you to get yourself a challenge. And you could pick we changed the regions with the years. So depending on depending on when you're looking there might be a different region.
But like I said now it's supporting Cambodia. Brazil and Uganda kind of all those respective continents all around there. And it's exciting.
So really the regions that you're dealing with right now are the regions everybody's dealing with? Or is there a different selection depending on where you go? Well right now like throughout the stellarartwa platform is going to be those three regions.
Last year was Honduras and my mind's failing me on where the other ones were. So it changes yearly? It has as so far.
This is the second year that I've been involved in it. And the initiative has kind of worked directly with them. The artists that design these chalices are actually from the regions.
Oh nice. So if you look at the back of the boxes they have each of the respective artists and where they're from and kind of why they went along. As you can see the Brazil chalice has a lot of women on it.
And nothing wrong with that. Devon Pike is joining us as well. Let's talk a little bit about the citer.
Yes. I've seen the citer advertised a few times and it's never been at a party that I'd go to. And generally there's one or two people.
Hi I'm Jane Bear. I drink citer. This might be the tastiest citer I've ever had.
And let me tell you something. And I am a booze hound. Yes.
And let me tell you something. You are not the first person. If you've been watching social media from diff this year for the last week.
A lot of people that I know that have come to the festival are also talking about the citer. So this isn't just a Devon Pike thing. What are the talking points on the citer other than the fact that Stella is actually throwing their brand behind something that is not their signature distilled product for the last so many centuries.
Well you know I'll start with the Stella stuff. So Stella itself as a beer the beer that we drink today. First was first brewed in 1926.
It's brewed in Belgium and it was first as a gift. It was made as a gift to the city of Belgium in 1926. So that's not just a commercial.
No it was a Christmas beer. Okay. That's why you see the star in the glass.
It's actually the word Stella means star in Latin. And our toa is the last name of the original brew master one of the owners of the company. His name is Sebastian our toa.
So speaking to Cedra which is our citer it hasn't eaten the end but we put away. Oh wait whoa whoa stop. Cedra.
Stop. He's allowed Cedra. He's allowed Cedra.
I know he's allowed. It's his job. I get that part but okay Cedra.
So if you don't order it as Cedra do they look at you funny? No. Not unless you're talking to anybody that if they do then they should probably shouldn't be working with us.
We politely correct and we try to help you and buy some more. But talking points on Cedra are so it's naturally gluten free which most ciders are. It's all the apples that are used.
They're sourced in North America between like the areas of Washington and Canada. When it's brewed you'll find that it's actually got a lighter quality to it. It's a little drier and it's actually brewed with a yeast that activates champagne typically.
That's what we put in a white wine glass. So it's a drinker over there. Yep.
Don't you drink it or not? Yes. Get a hold of that.
I'm on my second glass already. It is what I've found to be what most non-cider drinkers consider a drinkable cider. And for me.
This is fantastic. I put it actually. I usually make a little bit of it.
Do you or sweet baby Jesus that's clean. I do. I'll do like 75% Stella and about 25% Cedra and it's just one of the most refreshing drinks you can have.
There is a smoothness to that and I'm not a drinker. But you know what? We'll fix that.
Well, you know better. How did you DJ in karaoke for so long? That was before I had the whole blood sugar problem.
That happened after I retired. Okay. I just tried that.
I'm not much of a drinker. That is incredibly smooth. Yes.
That is like glass smooth. There's no bitter, there's no bitter kick to it. There's an alkaline kick that most ciders that are done domestically.
And not necessarily Canadians but most American ciders. There's an alkaline kick and it must be the distilling process that hits. I told you I was a booze hound.
This side, this Cedra is actually damn amazing. And I do like it a lot. There's no bite at the back here.
No. There's no unpleasant bite at the back. Oh, I'm sorry.
Is that how the pedestrian say it? Is that how the pedestrian say it? We like to call it Christian.
Thank you so much. Yes. That is a full flavored body finish.
That is glass smooth right there. Yes, sir. That is amazing.
I've been wanting to try this for ever since it launched. And I've just never gotten around to it. And I saw them like, ooh.
Well, you probably asked them for cider and they looked at you funny because you were pronouncing it correctly. I'm sorry. We don't serve that here.
Cedra, Cedra, please. My girlfriend's taking up this stuff. She's kind of over-tracing.
It's also that thing that you can just, on a night light tonight, you can just sit out here and you can have that in a glass and you can just sit on it and just kind of watch the world go by and life is good. Like that's, I'm on board. I'm on board.
And not just the sky in front of me. You know? I'm saying that it's true.
Yes. Wow, that was really good. Yeah.
I mean, I want to monopolize a bunch of your time, but give us everything people need to know again because we're all about shameless self-promotion. Of course. Of course.
So, like I said, the bilady drink program, like I said, it's currently supporting Brazil, Uganda, and Cambodia. Obviously, Asia, Africa, and South America. And if you want to find any of these glassware, any of these beautiful glasses, go on to biladyadrink.com, water.org, stellarartwa.com, or just type in stellarartwa in Amazon and it'll come up.
And they're $13.00. You can find them anywhere. We're going to be at all the horse races.
We're actually headed to the Brooklyn Film Festival coming up soon. Very nice. We'll be at Firefly.
Obviously, all the triple crown races. We have five of these, so it's hard for me to keep up with everybody's movements. Is there a special website for four of the air streams that they can go to, or is that actually on Stella's website?
You know, it's not actually, and it's not really broadcasted. If anything, if you find an event and go on it, you can maybe find it. Because we change, we have to service the areas and we get kind of sourced by the distributors.
There's a restraining order involved in there somewhere that I'm asked to put it. Sometimes. It depends on who you ask.
If you're like a food truck, you just put your 20 free out there and people just flock to you. They got to you. I mean, that's a gorgeous piece of equipment right there.
Yeah. That's really pretty. Yeah, the air stream's good too.
Yeah, you know. And they're also right here with us at the Festival Lounge. When you walk right in, that's where the child's store is.
Which, when we were, I was watching them set up and like, I'm telling you, that backdrop just fit right perfectly in that wall. It's like I was designed for it. It was perfect.
So go enjoy yourself, sir. We cannot thank you enough for dropping by and talking about this because I'm big into this. The water dot of work, I think, is a huge thing.
And plus you got, Man, Damon. Involved to. And I'm telling you, I love that commercial.
What was that again? Did you remember? Man, Damon.
This is a new thing for you, Damon. I must not have been listening to this show when he was doing this. That's why I was for a while.
Yeah, I know, but I can't listen all the way consistently. That's why. That's true.
Yeah, I just do it on the show. Man, that's a point. He doesn't.
That's a point. Stella R12 Water dot org get involved. 13 bucks and you get a gorgeous chalice.
This is not just someone that you put, you know, you put in the in the glass drawer that you pull out to drink your dinner with. This is a serious chalice. Yes.
And I'm sure you covered this before I hijacked the microphone, but Stella's support of film festivals around the country is phenomenal. Absolutely. There's a lot of festivals that actually would not happen if Stella doesn't kick in.
Especially this one. Well, this one, I mean, it's been an integral part for at least the last eight years since I've been coming in, probably for the last three prior to that. So thank you.
And that's all the higher organization for being a part of it sincerely. You're a class organist. I'll make sure to tell the people that matter.
I'll be honest, like the first year we did three years ago, it was the first year we did this and we walked into the media lounge, which is what's now the old Chicago over there at Mockingbird Station. And they have one of those like multi tap walls, and it was just all Stella. I was like, ooh, this just got real.
If you actually see these taps behind me, they're called swan towers. Those are going to look at that somewhere. That means that bar invested a bit.
Yes, they are not cheap, but they look awesome. Thank you again, sir. Of course, yes.
Devin, how you feeling, brother? Thanks for having me. I'm good, man.
It's fun. Thank you so much, sincerely. And it's the lounge tonight open till we hours of the morning.
I'm going to say one. I'm going to say one. They didn't tell me to say one, but I'm going to say one o'clock, because I can.
Well, the sign behind me says one. Oh, it does? Yeah, there's a sign behind me.
Friday and Saturday, 1 a.m. Okay, well, we can scratch that out then and we can write in like three. And it's a sign.
Well, and you also know when there's a DFS honor show, and we're here in Devin's here, you don't even need to put the wheels on, because we're going to come right back on. No, it's going to be one of those things where, by the way, and I want to say this. And I know that Donnie's like running around trying to get guests and everything else.
And I'll, you're always welcome since you have that. Yeah, but we wanted to do something a little bit different tonight. Okay.
So in honor of our good friend, Gary Murray, who he and I have been DJs for a very, very, very long time. And we were talking about this last year on Tuesday night, one of the three nights that I worked with the lounge last year. And Gary and I were hatching a plan to do an 80s prom at the lounge.
And that was supposed to have been Wednesday and that kind of got scuttled. So tonight, no one else outside of the festival organization knows this. But it is all 80s of the lounge tonight.
And by that, I mean, if someone requests a song that was released after December 31st, 1989, I refused to play it. All right. They cannot sign up for it as a karaoke song.
They cannot hear it. And that's just going to be the way it's going to be. You are one of my favorite people.
It is an 80s prom. And on us to God, I miss Gary. This festival is not the same without him.
The film scene around Dallas is not the same without him. And let me tell you something, speaking to Gary, I was talking to Leap Abert the other night. And he actually took a picture on the red carpet of the space they reserved for him.
Yes. And he said that on social media. And again, what I love about the diff, there's nothing you can say that's not followed by the words class act.
And Dawn getting the tattoo that was done live on Channel 8 the other night. Nortex's film critics is doing some stuff for him as well. It's the tributes to this man just never end and they never shit.
Well, there was a reason for that. Gary was an incredibly kind and giving human being. When I got back into the critics circle after being out of it for about, I probably 12, 15 years, whatever.
Gary was the first person to reach out to me and say, okay, here's somebody you need to talk to. Here's an introduction you need to make. This is some, this is a contact you need to have.
And Gary was always that giving with every single person that he met. He did that for us. It's not for him.
We don't have anything. Yeah, we're not here. Completely.
And I mean, it's just one of those things where this Dallas has a very robust film criticism sing. There are a lot of great critics or a lot of great writers. But Gary was one of those people who you wanted to hang out with after the screening and just yammer about what other whether it was whether it was Buffett, whether it was Floyd, whether it was just music in general.
The man had an encyclopedic knowledge of all of these things. And it was one of those amazing, amazing human beings. And there really isn't, I can't go to an event like this and not miss him.
You are definitely not in the minority there, sir. And we miss him very much. And I mean, that's the man said it.
The man said it. We also have somebody else joining us right now. It's another guy that has been with us since our first show at the film festival.
A guy that's a lot nicer to us than he ever has to be. Alex, welcome back to the show, sir. Thank you, Rob.
Tell everybody who he is. Because I want you to put everything out there because you are knee deep in the festival now. So tell everybody the whole job title now.
Okay. Alex, I'm part of the programming team of the festival, specifically in charge of international cinema and Latino cinema. So if it's not in English, it has to go through me.
That's the hardest working man in show business right now, especially this week. You are a lot more surprised than I thought you would be at this point. Because usually by this point, the festival, everybody's just like, I just need to get the Sunday.
Alex is skipping down the sidewalk. He is like, I don't know that I haven't not seen him since I've been wandering around the festival. I mean, you have been everywhere.
Are you about ready to exhale? No. So number one, it's after sundown.
And we're vampires in my family. So I'm even more awake than right now that you've seen me at noon. That's fair.
Okay. He was hanging upside down at sunrise. That's what they have those high ceilings for again.
Yeah, okay. Exactly. So, I mean, I know we still got two days to go.
What's been the highlight for you so far? The highlight has been the audience reception of a lot of the films that we were kind of, okay, we would probably have a very receptive audience. But then we had like, oh, we went to a rush line.
Oh, this one is full house. Oh, we better bring in chairs. And for those of you that don't understand when they say rush line, this is once they get all the past people in, all the ticketed people in, this is kind of an overflow line that they go to.
And the fact that when you have to go to that, that's an awesome, awesome thing. And there's no guarantee that you're going to get in because you're going to hang out because the allure of that film is so strong. So, all right.
So, as part of the programming team, I know the workload that James Faust and Sarah Harris have to, I refuse to use her wedding name because Sarah's amazing. So, I know the amount of films they have to watch to figure out parts of programming. As the non-English track goes, which is one of the most out, non-English tracks of any festival I've ever covered.
Especially this year. How many films have you had to watch and when did you have to start watching them? Between August and that first week of February, I watched about 700 films.
Oh, between shorts and features and... I haven't seen any 700 films in the last quarter century. I don't know about it.
When you work programming for a film festival of this magnitude with a 10-day slate and two full theater slates, that's what you've got to do. 150, it's a lot to fail. Oh, God almighty.
And some of them are still kind of TBA, so there's still some prizes around the corner. Yes, so, you know, I said it before they released the schedule. I said it on social media and I am standing by it.
This festival lineup this year was stout. That's the only word I can use. There's a list of films as long as my arm that I didn't get to watch because I had a day job that I'm just like, I still need to see these films.
And I've seen six films in the festival. I've got at least three more scheduled between now and Sunday. And you're going to be on a rush line for two of my already known.
Oh, there's no doubt in my mind. Yeah, yeah, yeah. One of them especially tomorrow night if I can get in.
Uh-huh. This, I mean, you guys have to be just like, I mean, were you just wowed once you finally got it down to just building everything out? Did you just floor you?
Like it floored me? For us, it was more of a sigh of relief in a way or more of like a jab. Because every year we try to have like, oh, this is our ideal lineup.
And then you have some bench warmers. And eventually you start getting nose and then you have to go to the bench warmers and you get something solid but not necessarily your first pick. Right?
It's just like the draft. And can I tell you, I feel horrible for not getting the reference. I bought my t-shirt earlier this week.
Have you seen the official logo? No. Oh, well, yeah, yeah.
I haven't seen the shirt. Where it looks like it's a volume number. No.
It turned up to 11 because this is the 11th annual. It totally went by me until I heard somebody say the ride. Say the ride.
Well, I heard somebody say the yard and I was like, how did that get past me? And it's you of all. I know.
I know. I know I am a terrible human being. And it just, but I bought the shirt.
I thought a shirt from every year I've been here. And I loved the logo this year. I just, I love the family feel of this festival every year too.
Like looking at when we first were here to now, it's grown so much but it still has the soul of that small festival, that people. Oh, I'm telling them we're not broadcasting. We're broadcasting.
I'm saying, I'm here. My best friend saying from Florida that we're broadcasting. I'm showing us on.
All right, give me one. But I'm just saying that I love doing Florida. You don't know nothing.
Hey, that's my best friend. It was the best man in my wedding. Watch yourself.
All right. Fine. So each year.
And I've got to get back inside in a little bit. He said he's on now. I have to ask this.
Each year, there's one film that brings like 19 people, the director, the producer, the craft services guy. Yeah. And they crowd the red carpet at every opportunity.
What film was that this year? Actually, two of them. Um, bomb city was one.
Yep. And into the junos. I know I wanted to see that.
That's on my list too. Because Marcus from that air show who's right to my right. He was talking that up last weekend.
Oh, this tall bastard. Yeah. The great.
Marino. Marcus. Marcus is like, I'm just over here checking my phone, dude.
But yeah, I mean, bomb city that's all anybody's been talking about. And into the into the who knows was another one that people have been talking about nonstop. And I'm so happy for those people at bomb city because we had them on the show last week.
And they could not have been nicer. And just that look in their eyes of like, this is really happening. Which is what I love about this festival is you get those people.
You don't get the people that just kind of saunter by you. And yes, you will see my film. And then you will be.
Hi, he beat me with praise. They're just looking around like. Like this is real dude.
It's just it's because it is and I say this every year. It is a film festival run by filmmakers. There are so many festivals that don't have that connection at a DNA level.
And whether whether you're talking about Michael Cain. Whether you're talking about James Faust. Whether you're talking about Sarah Harris.
Whether you're talking about Alex. You're talking about any of these people. They all know what it is to get a film out into the wild.
And films aren't released. They escape. And no one treats filmmakers better than Diff.
I will say it over and over again. And let me you're talking about the films. What we talked about this last week.
One of the great things about this festival is the number of films that show here that wind up. I don't know. Maybe getting nominated for an Oscar the next year.
Life animated. Maybe winning the Oscar like the heart locker. I just.
Getting to see the films and then getting you know what? We got to see that win or we got to talk to the people that made that film. And now that film is getting a wide release.
And honestly part of that magic if you may. Is that. Part of our thinking as programmers is okay.
We want these movies. They're great. These filmmakers are awesome.
But also do we have an audience for this film. We don't want to bring them into the wild and be like well no one showed up to the film. Because no one in Dallas would be interested in this thing.
We go for okay. We have these great films but now which ones can actually make a splash here with our audiences. Yeah.
And right now Alex has my favorite line of the night because I said to him I was like this is DFS honors. You're here not there. He says no I'm the designated survivor.
I was like you know what? He wins. He wins.
He wins the day. I got to get in there. You guys keep talking.
Yes. Good show brother. I was going to see you Alex.
Good to see you. We're singing. Are you coming in singing?
If we've got time absolutely. All right. Let's do this thing.
All right brother. I mean like I said I'm here as long as you are so. So you said you're going strong.
My brain just locked up on me. Give me a minute to get back on track. I mean is there a.
It's a problem. Is there anything that you haven't seen yet that you still want to see or have you actually seen all the films that you need to see? No I actually haven't seen all of the films that we showed.
Some of the documentaries have escaped me score. That's the one that is good. Score was good.
I saw that on Sunday morning. I really dug dealt. Delt was amazing.
Yeah no. Delt have seen. Delt was one of those as I was writing my review which by the way is up at www.theclubhousepodcast.com.
That's our website. Thank you sir. It was weird for me to write that review because even though I read in the synopsis and I knew the twist on it.
The way he treats it in the film I was almost afraid to talk about it because it like it offended him for so long you know. But that I'm telling you that's one you need to catch sir. Delt was amazing.
Okay. I'm looking very much looking forward to if I can get in to Lost City of Zeta Marnight. Although I'm a little weary as late as it's running as long as it runs.
It's going to be microscopic hours of the morning when I get home and this Sunday is Palm Sunday so I can't sleep in because it starts holy week. But also looking forward to Patty Cakes. I saw that got distribution.
It's coming out wide in July. Yes. So looking forward to that.
I'll tell you about Marcus. Marcus Blake is here. Get your mic on there sir.
That's right. I'm here. We're talking about some of the films I got to see.
Oh did you finally get to see some? I did. I've seen six films so far.
Quest. Did you get a chance to see Quest? No.
But again, it's like with being pressed if you're not. If it's not on a screen or list, sometimes it gets hard. But I saw a memory last night.
I was watching a Davion while that was on. Yeah. That was really good.
Quest was one of those that just wrecked my soul. And Alex and I were talking in pre-show. Yes.
Quest was one of those shows because it took them 10 years to film it. Right. It is one of those films that when it ended, I said to myself, this is how I should have felt at the end of Boyhood and didn't.
Maybe it's because documentary versus narrative. But that movie absolutely destroyed me. Well, there's been a couple documentaries like that.
We had a chance to interview Christine Clargeau who did trophy. Yes. And she asked me point blank in the interviewer, are you going to go see the movie in the theater?
And this is my reaction is the same that Rob had been seeing Lion. No, I can't watch this in the theater in public. I have to see this in private because I know I'm going to cry like a little girl.
You're dealing with animals. I'm sorry. I need to be in the privacy of my own home.
And it is absolutely amazing. I mean, out of all the documentaries at the festival, the two that I am like plugging and talking about is trophy and what lies upstream. Which if you hated the government before in the bureaucracy, this will just piss you off even more.
Well, and also combines you not to drink water ever again. So here's the beer. I know.
Well, you know, it is safe. But yeah, I mean, there's been a lot of great stuff. But I think there are some that it's hard to see in the theater in public.
But I do have one more that I would love to recommend. And I did shed a tear at the end of the movie. I did.
There's a single tear down the cheek. Well, I'm mainly, mainly. And not for litter.
This is for real. Brett Haley's the hero, which was one of the centerpiece. We interviewed him last week.
What a great guy. He also did a couple of years ago. The centerpiece told me directed.
I'll see you in my dreams, which I was a huge fan of. This was his latest film. That was again with Sam Elliott.
Yeah, and he said it. Point blank. This was a love letter to Sam Elliott.
So it. The best way that I could describe this film. If if the shoot is was the perfect film for John Wayne to end his career on.
If Sam Elliott never acted again, this would be the perfect last film that he could do. Which kind of sums up who he is and also recognizes that iconic voice that he has. Yeah.
But I mean, it was it was a whole theory. I did the end. I admit it.
Not a shame to say that. Trying to make sure what's going on here. I mean, we're.
Tech problems. Yeah. I don't know what's going on.
I'm going to refresh this page and see if we can get back on. Well, at that nerd show, when we do our podcast and there's technology issues, we just blame it on SkyNet. You know what?
We may have been hacked. I don't know. So I'm refreshing the page to see if we can get this.
I mean, we're still recording. We're still recording. It's going to go out on iTunes.
But I want to make sure that we can. You said there's kind of two golden eyes. One of the two.
Golden night. I'm leaning towards golden night because SkyNet just needs to be overused. I don't know.
There's no such thing as overused when it comes to terminated references. I'm just saying. I think that's true.
We would agree with that. All right. Let's try here.
All right. I think we're back. I think we're back now.
We are broadcasting. We're live. Hopefully we're back on.
Yeah. Okay. I'm not getting connection issues.
By the way, golden eye should. It's great because it also has one of the best bond girl names on a top. Danielle.
One of my favorite radio shows. We talked about all the time. The show is the Bob and Tom show.
And something that Tom always talks about on that show is. Do you think Ian Fleming just sat down and said, what else can I get past? Did I just throw in?
Let me just write some names down. I mean, Dr. No Goldfinger.
Some of these bond names. Let's be honest. He was just like, I just want to see if I can get away with it.
And he did. And that's the first reason I love. I'm such a fan of the bond franchise.
But this whole festival, I mean, there's, and it's just like this is just starting. It's about to get live out here. And we've already got a ton of people that are out here walking around.
It sounds like the, the karaoke is getting fired up in the other room. And like I said, whenever we're in a room and Devin's in a room and we're both doing a show, you know the wheels are coming on. Right.
But by the way, I want to point out in karaoke. I will be disappointed if somebody does not do a tribute to Chuck Berry and do my dangling. It's only eighties tonight.
All eighties. It's all eighties. So by the way, if you ever want to like get back in a girlfriend who's mad at you for.
Karaoke, I just call to say I love you. It's always a good way to get back down. I don't know.
I prefer say along by the Commodore's because it's the most beautiful. Go F yourself song in the history of ever. Because it's such a beautiful song.
And then you listen to the lyrics and you're like, wait a minute. I was told I want to go stupid. But it also goes great with you know, Lionel Richie's hello, which is the most creepy stalker song.
But you know what I love about that song. If you ever watched it on pop-up video, the girl in that video was really blind. And as a thank you gift, he gave her a TV.
Let it sink in. Oh, I know. And I was just like, hmm, didn't think that one quite through.
It didn't give her a book. So yeah, I'm just, I'm my adrenaline is just flowing right now. Because I'm ready for this night.
It's a beautiful night. If you're in the Dallas, Fort Worth, come on down to Uptown. It's Friday night.
You got nothing going on tomorrow. By the way, I think I don't know if you guys have already mentioned it because I just got here sure of drinking. But I've got a lot of people text me, especially like older friends I have.
Don Rickles. You know, 90, what a great run. I know.
We were talking about this in pre-show. He is the only guy on the planet that I can think of off the bat. That can absolutely tear you down to your face and you will laugh right along with him.
We were talking about some of our favorite stories about Don Rickles. The one my personal favorite is, he's in a restaurant in Vegas and Sinatra is there. And he walks through, he's like, Frank, I need you to do me a favor.
I'm with some friends. Can you come over and say something because I really want to impress him? And Frank's like, sure.
So he goes and says down in about five to ten minutes that your friend comes by and says, Hey, Don Rickles looks at him and says, Frank, what are you doing? I'm trying to, I didn't hear. Leave me alone.
I mean, the guy was in toy story for God's sake. He was Mr. Potato Head.
And he just, he even worked his hockey puck reference into toy story. And they asked him, like, where did that come from? He goes, I just called somebody that once because I was trying not to curse.
And it worked. I never let go of it. And did you ever see the documentary that Showtime did on it?
I think it was Showtime did on him. It was amazing. Everybody loves him.
Oh, what was it called? Mr. Warmth?
Yes. Mr. Warmth, you're okay.
Alex, Alex has got to go. Sir, always a pleasure to have you on the show. Thank you again.
It would help. Yes. And talk right into that microphone.
So that way, you know how loud you are. Did I say something? Absolutely.
You just did. Hello. We have another guest joining us.
Introduce everybody to yourself, please. Jessica Spine with Instagram catbombs. My recent short film.
I just did. Instagram catbombs. It's hilarious.
You know my wife, don't you? Sure. If I would let my wife be crazy catlady, she would be crazy.
If you would let her. Because I have to contain the two. We have two.
And any more than that. You don't live two cats? We only have to.
I feel like you have room for a few more. No, we don't. Because our two.
No, who doesn't? Our two. They allow us to live in that house as it is.
That was nice of them. I will tell you she did get around it once. Because last year we had a mom cat have a litter underneath our shed.
And she started naming them. And I was like, I said, you know what? I'm going to give you that one because they're outside the house.
Right. But you snuck it past me. And I'm going to give you credit for that.
That works. So short played during the festival? No.
So I have a short film online at the moment. Oh, okay. Fair enough.
But actually, basically, I'm just kind of making fun of what people do for their cat accounts on Instagram. Like myself, because my cats have 7,500 followers. And I only have 300 followers as a person.
It makes me kind of depressed, actually. When I take a picture of the boys and I just hashtag that cats of Instagram. It's amazing.
How many? I'm like, I have such cool stuff in my Instagram. I have such cool stuff in my Instagram.
Cats are cooler. I figure to improve a selfie just out of cat. You know what?
That's my motto. Actually, I don't really like two cats. I have two mountain lions living in my home because Hunter is 19 pounds, Jasper 14.
Yeah. Hunter is just like two flips from how to train your car. Okay.
Okay. Real fast. This is the safe fighter for Chad that they made from the Stella thing.
He's already had it. This is what? I'm very confused about what's going on right now.
I have a question about your life. Okay. So do you know how trendy cats are right now?
By the way, they're pretty awesome. Mine. I'm just now getting on to it over here in America, but the people in Asia and others.
As a nerd. Okay. Do you have, like, bat cat?
You know, a cat that looks like Batman? I do not, but I couldn't have that. I believe it.
I believe an idea has been launched. We could make an outfit for them. I mean, they wear outfits on my page.
Batman and Robert cats. Yeah. I'm totally down with that.
You can start an Instagram page for cats. I actually put a video on my page a few months ago where somebody reenacted Batman versus Superman with kittens. It is one of the funniest things in the history of everything.
So do you guys remember Best in Show, the dog show film? Yes, yes, yes. But basically what I'm actually working on is a feature right now that's similar in style and tone.
It's a mockumentary, but it's about the internet cat video festival. And with a huge trend right now, globally. You have my attention.
Well, good. Okay. We have one coming up actually in August here.
I'm helping host it with Bart from Dallas video fest. Oh, that's right. Bart.
I was going to bring a belt over last year at the cat video festival. So we're putting on the feline film fest this year. But basically my feature film is it makes, you know, the four finalists go in their journey to the cat video festival.
tying social media together. And it's really, really hilarious. It's amusing.
It's amusing. It's amusing, if you will. Basically.
I can't even write that well. I was trying to come up with a slogan. She killed it for me.
It's, it's, it's beautiful. I could just say meow. Yeah.
There you go. Is that a super, super reference? Right now.
Right now. Right now. Meow, just in here.
Meow. Yeah. I remember that film.
I love that you understand the reference. I do. We were just talking about that actually.
And I'm ready for the sequel. Yeah. Okay.
Well, I'll get, oh, then. Super troopers too is coming up. Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah. They got it funded.
They did a crowdfunding. Oh. They got the entire film funded in two days.
Are you serious? Okay. So I need to get funded for my feature film.
So. Exactly. You're fun.
Exactly. And the next stage is I'm the script's almost finished. And I need investors.
So. Indiegogo is a beautiful thing. Yeah, right?
The same. So you're hanging out the festival. What have you seen so far that you've enjoyed?
Oh, man. Ella Brennan, commanding the table. Excellent film.
I'm going to be- Don caught that the other night. He said he really enjoyed it. It was so good.
And it was so inspirational. Basically, like, the time she got back up, picked herself up, and made the restaurant work. And he said, like, he left it, had to go straight to go get something to eat, because that film just made him hungry.
Come on. Oh. Yeah.
No, I wanted some bananas faster, actually. You don't have any dish that you can set up fire. Uh, yeah.
I'm on board with that. I've never tried to make that myself, though, because I'm pretty sure I'd lose my eyebrows. I know a lot of cooks.
That's all they can- It's really long lighter things. Oh, yeah, right? Like, yeah.
That'd be fine. Did you guys see the man in the camo jacket? I miss it.
He was playing when I was- We were both otherwise. That was very good. He did this small concert.
I don't know what you'd call that, but he played. He showed up. He was there.
Yes. I met him. He was amazing.
And again, inspirational. It was a dream for me and the films I've been seeing are inspirational films. There's been- We've been talking all night tonight and all night Friday, last Friday too, about how deep this festival is this year.
Yes. We love the dip so much every year. It's probably a really good tone.
I mean, it's always- It's got a unique tone that's here. Yeah, they're- They're literally trying to make us cry every night. I know.
Cry in love and clap and yell. And they raise the bar every year. They raise the bar every year.
They do. I know. What's happening next year?
Maybe my future film with the cats is going to be here. Bring it on. I feel like it's worth the deal on demand situation.
Look, I mean, you know, Arthur Benjamin, you know, does the red carpet with his dog. I want to red carpet with cats. I'll bring mine.
With Batman and Robin. I have a cat. I have a cat buggy, so I could- I already- I already- I already talked about some.
And it can be really furry, so they can- All right. I'm going to give him a cat idea. Yes.
Jaws cat and you have the theme music laying behind him. Well, I already have a cat that I put in a- a shark outfit, so basically. But the theme music- You have to have the theme music.
It's all about the theme music. I need to create my own, though. And then we'll be like- Well, speaking of that, they really addressed that if you- I don't know if you caught score.
About the Jaws. With the documentary they had about- Yeah. About film scores.
They actually addressed that where there was an interview with- The cat was inspiration. Could have been. I don't know.
But it was John Williams' team in Spielberg. Well, there was a line involved, though, with the sound mixing, wasn't there? No, that was- That was too much.
That's too much. Okay, there you go. Something like that.
But he was saying that Spielberg was like- He brought this and he would dead him. And I was like, no, seriously. What is it?
He's like, no. He's just roll the footage and he started playing it and Spielberg was like- He's a genius. He wins.
Like he's John Williams. He always wins. Right.
We don't argue with you anymore. But it's still going strong. Is there anything else that you're planning on for the rest of the weekend?
Oh, for the rest of the festival? Mm-hmm. I have to be- It's got two more days.
Fronts, fronts, fronts. That's actually giving a wide release. It looks amazing.
I know, because I saw a preview, I think, at the Angelica recently. And I was very interested to see it. They've got the poster up at the Angelica.
It's beautiful. It looks like the cinematography's amazing. And I love the black and white kind of like feel.
And especially when you give it more. And I love porn films. You have to actually read it.
Yeah. You have to use your brain a little more. I like the nice- He puts a sharp here.
I'm in on that. Right? I'm absolutely in on that.
You are just fired up. You're ready to cheat. I'm not sure what to do.
I'm just going to keep saying, yeah, I'm going to create my song. That's what's going to happen. I don't know.
Can you- Can you do the wave on a podcast? No! What was that?
Major League 2 Man Wave. Good ride. Woo!
I feel like she's going to do the film adaptation of Smelly Cat or something. Oh, don't see. Now you got something there.
You could always work it back around to the early mid-90s. I've never got a surprise. There hasn't been like some kind of film version or satire of Smelly Cat.
Oh, it's the internet. It's out there. It's got to be out there.
Okay. It's got to be out there. So maybe that'll be my next next project.
There you go. See, we're just lining stuff up for you. Thank you.
That's what we do when you're interviewing me for the feature. I'll be like, yeah, and this is happening. This is happening.
You better believe it. Cats, cats, cats. Because they bring us back next year for our fifth time in a row.
Absolutely. It's like, yeah, I'm promoting Smelly Cat 2 Smell Harder. It's a...
Die Hard in a cat farm. Smelly Cat. It's Die Hard in a Cat sanctuary.
Smelly with a vengeance. Oh, my goodness. Live free to smell.
Never mind. I can do it. I'm not finishing that one.
Just let it go. You know, I think you made the fifth version. It would still be better than Die Hard 5.
You're probably right. Yes, we all still have seen it because we have a moral obligation to die hard. All right, we want you to go enjoy the party.
But we are all about shameless self promotion. So give us social media. Give us websites.
Instagram catmom.com and everything. Social media. Instagram catmom.
And then the future film, Hungry Cat Media is my company that's producing it. Okay. So if anyone wants to invest in it, get with me, Jessica Spon.
Instagram catmom. It'll make it happen. And then you can be part of this coolness.
I'm in. I'm down. Thank you for hanging out with us.
You're welcome. Because the party is about to get rolling. Yeah.
You're going to go play. All right. Do that.
Enjoy. You are listening to the Clubhouse Podcast. We're normally live on Sunday nights.
But we are at this part two of the Dallas International Festival shows. We had the first weekend. It's now the second weekend.
There's two more days left in this festival. And if you think the gun is empty, my friend, you are sorely mistaken. Oh, no.
There is some great stuff coming up. Closing the festival, I think, is very interesting because it's the only time you're going to get to see a film called Paddy Cakes. Yeah.
And it's closing the festival. And it's the only time they're showing it. But it's also getting wide distribution in July.
Right. And this is about a young lady who's got an aspiring hip-hop career. I'm going to try to see this on Sunday night.
I know. If I can get him. Because it's the only show I'm going to be getting a lot of pubs on.
Hopefully I can get in. I feel like I'm going to have to sleep in late on Sunday to try to make this, you know, to catch up and get some rest. But I feel like it'll be worth it.
I mean, and it's just this film festival has been non-stop. I mean, that's what it is always. I mean, 11 days of craziness.
Oh. Shall I get on? Well, we're going to have one of my co-hosts and bloggers with that nerd show, Alex Moore.
Alex, welcome to the show. I think this is the first time Alex is that down. Alex, yes it is.
He's known Alex for a while. Long overdue. I've done your show with him, but he's never done our show.
Right, I know. He's never done our show with us. We've got to let the nerds talk.
Hey, I'm always on board with that. So I do have to, I have to share this story because I know you guys didn't do red carpet. So you've kind of missed out on our fun being nerds.
But anyway, uh, we, we, we had some sound problems starting with the art of film that we fixed. And I got a new mic. But we have something.
The lightsaber. Great. We have a lightsaber mic.
Talked about that last week. Did we? Yeah, we did.
Oh, be here. I think it is. Well, I don't know if we're really taking a step further.
I think it's a great idea. We are going to customize these based on what our favorite saber is. So I'm getting a personalized doo koo saber.
Attention to my eyes. Yeah. How's going to wait distribution going to work on that?
I don't know how that is. I mean, I just bought some other ones the other day. So we, we have Luke's green saber.
We've got Anakin's. We got Vader's. How do you do Kylo's?
You got three mics sticking out in different directions. That's the, uh, that's the boo mic. I thought about that.
Yeah. I'm, I'm not hearing Mace Windu. I'm not hearing Mace Windu.
I'm not hearing Mace Windu. I got to find it. Purple saber.
Yeah, because you got to hand out. It's funny that this is the reactions by people. Is that a lightsaber?
Like, yes. Oh, yeah. Yes, it is.
That's how we roll. Don't hate. Just talk.
Would you be willing to convert your Mace Windu saber that you have in your, in your office? No. No.
That's my Mace Windu saber. I'm just saying. It shouldn't.
That's right. Mark. Mark.
Mark. It shouldn't be a finish, because I did give you the darn thing. I know, but still.
My Mace Windu saber is, we'll stay exactly like it does. Okay. Speaking of which, where's my trailer?
Because now they're saying, now I read today that there's rumors that episode nine starts filming in July. I told you we're getting the trailer when, when the celebration starts. I'm not, that patient.
Actually, there was an article. I don't, I cannot truly confirm it, but they said that we may not get a trailer at celebration. You're kidding me.
There was something out there today. And believe me, I check every day for Star Wars news. As do I.
Yeah. I'm not ever going to doubt Marcus's knowledge. There's my question, though, about episode nine.
Is it going to begin with the word return, just like the other last of each trilogy? Think about it. Yeah, that was revenge.
Well, I thought it was revenge. Okay. But then you go return to the king from, that's a different series, of course.
Revenge of the first order. But don't forget that return of the Jedi was originally called revenge. Yes, it was renamed it.
I remember the first time I saw it. It's back in the days when you had slide shows that would show before movies, because they couldn't do full motion video yet. And I remember the first time I saw that teaser of Luke's hands holding the saber.
And it said revenge of the Jedi. And I was just like, I want to go to that. Now, here's a question in talking about Star Wars.
I mean, especially with us doing our documentary, which we're now editing. But you're editing. Yeah.
Well, I am. Welcome to my life. But anyway, as excited as we were for the Force Awakens and as much as we've enjoyed it, we've talked about it and debated it.
Is it safe to say that we all might be a little bit more excited about episode eight, because we know it may be a little bit more closer to Empire Strikes Back in that theme? Just darker. Yeah, sure.
If I'm being perfectly honest in the interest of full disclosure, I'm excited because it has the word Star Wars. I can't disagree with them. I don't care.
I just need my Star Wars. Well, given how dark Rogue was. Yeah.
And how dark the tone of the second chapter always tends to be awesome. Then don't forget about the awesome. Yeah.
Well, as much as I enjoyed the Force Awakens, this is the one that I've been looking forward to mostly because it is Luke being the Jedi Master. Yeah. It's supposed to be darker.
And the only thing that I swear to God, I'm going to be pissed off if he doesn't make it out of this trilogy. And it needs to be Luke. I don't need this.
So it was like something that happens to him at the end of this movie. I'm like, I'm not saying I won't see episode nine, but I'm going to be very mad and there will be some protest. Wouldn't it kind of be ironic if Chewbacca is the only one that survives once considering that he was the one that got buffed off?
Yeah. Yeah. Because he's the ultimate go pound sand to the people that keep ragging on the EU.
Yeah. Yeah. He lives in our universe.
So go pound sand. But he's the only one in it. Let's talk some entertainment headlines since we've got the gentleman here.
All right. As you know, today is the day that the get down part two drops on Netflix. I'm very excited to watch that.
I haven't talked to anybody who's watched it yet. I loved part one. That first episode is kind of tough to get through.
But once you get through that first episode, it's a little slow. But anything with Jaden Smith is going to be tough to get through. But he's really not in it that much though.
You haven't watched it. You can't make that judgment call, sir. No, but I know Jaden Smith.
But you haven't watched it. That's my thing. You're judging without watching.
Because he's not really in it that much says the guy that won't finish Avatar. But anyway, because Avatar sucks. Okay.
And you've watched. I fell asleep 45 minutes in. Wait a minute.
You don't have me in 45 minutes. That's a problem. Rob.
You didn't like dances with wolves with blue people. I did not like Thunder Smirks, no. If you listen to this show quite a bit, you know how much I've been raving about Riverdale.
This show is better than it has to be. But have you seen next week? Because this has really been about Archie and his dad played by Luke Perry.
Well, next week his mother shows up. Played by the great Molly Ringwald. So now worlds are colliding.
So now, not only am I old enough to watch a show where Luke Perry is the father of a high schooler. Now Molly Ringwald's his mom. I mean, I'm still in on the show.
I love this show. I love everything about this show. It's a fun game at some point.
If the father was Judd Nelson, I'd feel a lot better about it. So I'm telling you, you're going to watch one episode of this show and you're going to be like, I now have to watch them all. If Archie's last day was better than it has to be.
But I mean, guilty pleasure. It really is. The reason I haven't been pulled into it on top of the time.
Because there's only 24 hours in a day. That's my first description to me when you started watching it was. It's got this Twin Peaks 5.
And I'm like, I'm waiting for the actual race. Yeah, you want Twin Peaks. But you did see the most unstable Funko pop of all time has been released, speaking of which.
You can get Laura Palmer wrapped in the plastic. Oh my god. It is hilarious.
You know what? That's just as brilliant as the meth lab breaking bad Lego set. Yes, that is true.
Also, congratulations to criminal mind CBS has renewed them for season 13. Good word. How does that show still have legs on it?
And Netflix has given a third season, which I thought we were still in season one of unfortunate series of events or whatever that's called series of unfortunate events. They're giving them season three. I thought we were still in season one.
Well, they had now, so they were doing season two a while back. I agree that three. What they're saying.
OK. NBC has up to the Will and Grace episode order from 10 to 12. And my cousin and his wife will be there.
I love that show. I love that show. I was a fan.
Have you seen, are you guys caught up on Legends of Tomorrow? No. You would need to talk to Alice in our blog.
OK. So, but can we talk season finale? No, no.
I'm boiling. OK. I just want to make sure that I don't watch it as the editor and producer of that nerd show.
I know what's going on. OK. I didn't want to say the thing you guys haven't watched yet.
Season finale. Season finale was this week. Close to the end of the episode, Rip Hunter Leaves says, you know, this is your ship now.
You don't need me anymore. Right. But they said today that Rip will be in season three.
Right. So, he's not going away like we did with Hawkman and Hawkgirl. He will be back.
Right. That's probably to me right now the strongest of the CWDC shows. Which was weird because I didn't think it would be.
Well, I mean, Arrow is always going to be my personal favorite. But Arrow. I'm struggling with Arrow right now.
Yeah. Arrow has hit its peak. I mean, they have we have we have we are we on the downside of the hill now.
I think we are. But they had already planned it for five seasons. They wanted to tell a five year story.
Well, they said this year is the last year for the flashbacks. Right. So, also, I don't know if you saw this earlier this week, Amazon striking a $50 million deal with the NFL where Amazon will be streaming all of the Thursday night football games this year.
Yeah. But if you have Amazon Prime that will be included with your Amazon Prime. So, it will be pay-per-view if you don't.
But if your Amazon Prime customer you can stream those for free. Twitter kind of laid the pathway for that this past year. So, we're going to see how that works out.
Well, I think that's just another changing of the of the guard when it comes to, you know, how we watch TV. Be careful. By the way, it real quick on sports.
For the team mobile customers out there that you always get your deals on Tuesdays. This is one of the reasons I am still a team mobile customer. You get MLB premium for free if you sign up like one or two days at the beginning of the baseball season.
Oh, really? And there is a trick. You can register an account with MLB with each device you have under your account.
So, like me, I've got like three different accounts. And for all of my friends that, you know, we cheer for teams that are not from Texas. Uh-huh.
You're looking at one right now. Yeah. And here is your username and password that you can use to watch all of your games because I believe in sharing.
And I- Sharing is caring, sir. Exactly. That, to me, that makes being a team mobile customer worth it.
They don't have to market anything else. The fact that I get to watch 162 ball games of my Chicago cups of free. And there's baseball balls.
You're raining defending. I know. I know.
Just saying. It's so weird. I mean, back to the future was only off by one year.
We forgive them. So, a couple of more, more geeky headlines for you in some other way. Uh-uh.
AMC has announced that the season, third season for Fear the Walking Dead will debut in June. Yeah. Never watched an episode.
But- Me neither. Uh-uh. Do you guys know Freeform?
It's what used to be ABC Family. Yes. They have been ordered to order from Marvel a New Warrior series.
Really? Yes. That was announced today.
All right. Well, I'm glad that you have that press release because I didn't see it before we came out. But that's- My source tends to be 411minion.com.
They tend to keep up with print. But they- Well, we get emails about stuff. But when you're doing stuff all day, you don't have time to shift.
So, New War- And I love that they're kind of dipping into the catalog going to some of the deep cuts a little bit. Right. And I think Freeform would be a good, a good platform for that.
Well, I think Freeform starting to get into more of that later teenage markets. Where they're doing a lot of these shows that maybe the CW turned down kind of thing. Well, but you know what?
ABC Family has kind of been on the cusp of that sci-fi kind of young adult. And it started with Kyle X-Y, which was like 10 years ago. And that wasn't show that.
And I'd say it was incredible for what it was. You know what I think would be a good show for a network like Freeform that I think they should really pick. Even though it's vertigo, so it would have to be the CW.
There was talk for a while about a Y the last man series. Yeah. Yeah.
I've got the first probably 30 issues of that series at home before I had to stop collecting. Because, you know, I was paying people's bills with my subscriptions. But I thought why the last man was an amazing title and why that kind of just, you know, pun intended.
That just kind of dropped off the planet. I'll never understand. Because there was serious talk like they had Yorick cast and everything.
Well, maybe Freeform will actually do a team type. A good one, you mean? Yeah, well.
But that's also DC. So we would have to go to see that. I know.
A couple of music headlines. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction coming up here in just a few weeks. Steve Perry announces he will reunite with Journey for the induction.
Wow. About time. That came down today.
Also, Sergeant Pepper is going to get a 50th anniversary release with tracks that should have been on there but wouldn't. Wow. But weren't.
I heard that the other day. I have my attention on that. So music new releases coming up next week for those of you that like music new releases.
The John Mayer. Well, I've heard a couple of tracks off of this album. It's impressive.
It's called The Search for Everything. Or I like to call my 20s. All right, moving on.
Some movie headlines. We can talk about congratulations to the filmmakers of Kong Skull Island has reached the half a billion mark worldwide. Did you guys like that film?
Didn't see it yet. I've heard that that Riley kind of carries it. John C.
Riley. Oh, okay. It's a summer popcorn movie.
I mean, it's entertaining. Do you think it came out too soon before the summer season? No.
I. Or what do you have? Was it better served now than in the midst of all those big summer films?
Look, I think I think the film is what it is. It's not going to be, you know, great. It's going to be fun.
Samuel L. Jackson is great, you know. I think himself.
Right. If you go in taking it too seriously, you're going to be disappointed. But if you accept what it is.
I will say our friends over at the movie brothers they have. They actually reviewed it this earlier this week. It's available on their YouTube channel, Movie Brothers BRUTHAS.com.
That's their website. Okay, good. Thanks for being there for me.
Don's very excited because April 26th has been declared by Fox as Alien Day. This year? Yes.
So I said it last week on the show. I'm going to say it again. That new poster creeps me out.
I love it. That new Alien Covenant poster creeps me out. You know, my other co-host Brenda commented to me this past week.
Like, you know, I wasn't a huge fan of Prometheus. And we did the press screening years ago at eight o'clock in the morning. We already know.
We already know. Yeah. Yeah.
We already know. It's been exactly made. You're committed with hearing an eight amp screen.
I didn't bother. It had a screener's that early. It's the outside.
I remember I was saying I haven't done one since. I want to say the last Hunger Games film they did a screening at like 10 in the morning. I'm going to say it anyway.
It's a good day job, bro. But Alien Covenant is like not really a huge fan and haven't been. But that really looks good.
I might have to go see that. And he's more, he's way more critical than I am on anything. I'm like, okay.
This might actually be good if you know. He's saying it's going to be worthy to see. And we also have the announce of this week that there will be a feature film get ready for those kids of the 90s Oh, no, there will be a film for invaders.
Jim Wow They're doing a film. Nickelodeon has green lit it. Huh?
I don't know how I feel about that Well then get ready for this next headline Brand new animated feature being produced by Warner Brothers coming out called Batman and Harley Quinn Yes, I read where they team up to take on poison ivy and plant master Paget Brewster will be paying playing poison ivy that makes sense playing Harley Quinn Melissa Rouch. Yes She is this is animated so it's voice talent. Yeah, but she is sexy in some ways the bronze Hello, is this on hello We talked a couple of weeks ago on the show about the fact that they're making a feature film out of the video game rampage Yeah, you I believe we talked about mainland acrimon playing the main film.
She's the one that created the monster program But joining her in this film will be one Jeffrey Dean Morgan And I want to say I want to say Dwayne's involved. Yes, he is. Yes, he is was but I just hear the announcement about him Oh, the the the next is next producing and starring role He's gonna be doing another Disney ride is being translated into a film.
Yep. He will be producing and starring in jungle crews Wow, let it sink in kids Yeah, haunted mansion. Oh, oh, oh, oh, I will I will watch that when I watch truth fairy again So you're saying there's a chance Yeah, but I'll tell you what you want to talk about unstable when you're talking about Dwayne Have you been reading these stories about this press tour for this new fast and furious coming out next week?
No, how him and the the probe the the PR people for him and Vin Diesel are purposely keeping them as far apart as possible really Yeah, I mean still a thing. Yeah, I've heard stories like on the set, but my my question to that is How real is that or is that just creating new stories? I think it's just great Hope so because how hard is it to not get along with Dwayne Johnson?
Like this seems like a guy that's just happy and though all the time flip it reverse it how hard is it to get along with Vin Diesel right That's right. By the way. I'm still waiting for my co-jack movie with Vin Diesel that I keep hearing about We know how well that revival TV show did yeah So we have more of possible casting for the Tim Burton reimagining of Dumbo that's allegedly gonna start Your villain has been in talks right now to be one Michael Leave this movie alone They already ruined Willy Wonka sort of Depending on how you look at it.
I appreciate you. We want to go there with planted at the eighths I that's a source of it with me because I I think the original is like the best sci-fi movie ever I mean when it comes to allegory No, no seriously Hear me out. Okay, if you look at allegory in a sci-fi film Plan the apes is the best because it's basically Galileo arguing before the church and I'm not arguing with you believe me that was my original obsession before Star Wars When I had my tons elected me I was holding on to a Dr.
Zay is action figure at the age of four and it's not like the the last three of the Films were really that good, but you watched them anyway because they're still cautionary tales right of this is what can go wrong Because I'm about equal time And you know, we just talked about my my lack of enjoyment of that film The Gourney Weaver has said That thunder smurfs to will start filming this fall Thought they have been working on that for nine months I'm talking about before cameras not pre-production Still, I mean, I thought that I thought they were working on two and three at the same time How many smurf movies do they have now? Oh, there's a new one coming out. It's open today Okay, also And you know when he says thunder smurfs what he's talking about, right?
Yes, okay Do you hear this Michael Bay story this week? Oh, God? I'm afraid but now I want to hear it.
He has said that they have an outline and plans for a total Oh 14 transformers right right. Yeah, because we need that What can I do a thunder or do they have 14 transformers films in the bash? Look, I'm all about giving Peter Cullen Boye boys work because he's awesome Really Hugo Weaving I'm all about the Hugo Weaving get more well, too, but let me I just I I just want to hit Michael Bay with a chair right now because I Was I've always been a Michael Bay apologist because bad boys gets him a pass for me until I saw age of extinction and almost picked up The recliner in the theater up off the floor and raging through it at the screen Rob you're talking to two members of that nerd show you know the genesis of that nerd show It was everybody arguing about him doing the teenage union interturtles on my Facebook for five day lizards And I'm like, well, I just fell my next project Nerd podcast what we could argue about Michael Bay well more more geeky nerdy headlines the the guy that wrote those did the screens Screen for that the script for Force Gump Eric Roth yes is going to be penning dune for Dennis Villanuevich yes I'm not a busy man.
Do we need to revisit this well seriously? Well, I feel like the the little sci-fi miniseries thing in the 90s, you know hit it pretty well But I don't I'm I'm a I was a fan of the 85 film and I know most people weren't I'm not saying it's made a little book But it's a fun film. It's like watching the flash Gordon movie Hey, you know what hey now.
I love that film. I love it. I love the 19th film.
The sci-fi series was horrifying Yeah, I didn't think you but see I held it to a lower standard than you did I didn't think it was that bad. It wasn't that good. It just wasn't that bad It was bad and it was weird because I got all the way through it and my DVR cut off the last 90 seconds of the finale And so I don't really know what happens because I never bothered to cope in your life is probably better for that But there's a lot of things that I cringed at the thought of them like making like I never thought Enders game should ever be a movie and then they did one and I'm like all right It was good and I thought Harrison Ford his chronograph was really good and It impressed me enough to say that I don't hate this idea So I applied that same logic to doing another, you know, Dune movie or series I don't think it's ever really been properly done The sci-fi series the miniseries was good, but Dune is so dense There's so many layers today that I still don't think that it would it's been properly explored But I'll ask this question to you Do you feel like that the best sci-fi?
Sometimes these should just be literary and you don't ever do anything beyond that. That would be that may very well be true I have five words for you Hitchhiker's guide to the yeah Yeah That's the only book series. I've read multiple times.
Well, what it was that they said that was literally well They said it about Lord of the Rings and it was literally unfilmable right and Peter Jackson proved them wrong Well, the one that I didn't burn the shire didn't burn the shire didn't burn the shire I know the one that I'm truly scared about though is they've been trying to make a founders series for a trilogy for a while And as much as I love you know that those books I'm kind of on the side of don't touch it because you're probably gonna screw it up Well, look how long it's taking them to do dark tower for God's sakes and they're gonna screw that up They're probably gonna see that but that one sheet looks awesome the one sheet don't mean squad We we've seen a one sheet for King Conan and now Schwarzenegger's thing is probably not gonna my best friend Rico's in the chat room It comes out on his birthday July 28 dark tower does. Yep. Sure does.
How you doing Rico? And it's it's Idris Yeah, but you know, I heard something about Idris the other day that I did not know did you know that in Europe? He is a one of the prime DJs in Europe.
He spins all the time I like really kind of like the other way is Elba is an amazing DJ. Kind of like Hodor like oh, yeah Seriously like that's what he did. Yeah, he did like a lot of Game of Thrones set here.
Yeah at the bomb factory that fact is Kind of unbelievable, but so cool just like hearing that Vin Diesel loves Dungeons and Dragons and is a dragon mat You know Dungeon master runs his own game. Yeah, but that didn't help that movie either And my thing with and let's just put it out there my thing with the last witch hunter That movie could have been four movies and been better. Yeah, like you could have told that story over multiple films Yeah, that's the first the first ten minutes of that film should have been a film should have What's the Vin Diesel movie were With Michelle Yahweh that he has to take the girl to like another city or something Do you know what I'm talking about?
Oh But I can't look that up. It's good, but I can't remember the name of it. It was good.
I Wow, that's an indictment Yeah, no movie nobody ever talks about Vin Diesel that actually thought was good was find me guilty with Peter Nicholas You know what you want to talk about acting acting job that was better than it had to be yeah I totally agree with you on that was one of those was like It's somebody it's kind of like when you watch Olivia Munn on the newsroom like sheep sheep to me is living breathing proof That Aaron Sorkin can turn anybody into an actor. Oh, yeah, because I want like when did she learn to yeah, okay? There you go, but it's the dial address on a pig if there's anybody in TV that can write the best dialogue It's Aaron Sorkin And I challenge everybody if you are fans of the West Wing You love the new room and I've been to watch those shows all the time because that's what makes me feel good We've got the whole we've got the whole series box at the looks like the big dossiers for every season for the West Wing Oh, I believe that too, but the thing is you have to go back and watch sports night.
Oh sports night I watched in first run you kidding me. Yeah, one of my favorite episodes of sports night was when they were going to Vegas Yeah, and they were going back and forth in the beginning is like I don't believe it's like so he had predicted something and it happened He goes okay, so we go to Vegas when I take the double down just double my ass down That was what I loved that series Geome you put Robert Geome and anything. I'm gonna watch I know I know and Felicity Huffman before anybody knew who she was Josh Molina who seems to be an Aaron Sorkin muse that show Never got the love it deserve no, but it had two great seasons all the episodes of 30 minutes And I think my favorite really my favorite part of that series was you know the last season when they're having to sell the company And Felicity Huffman keeps having conversation with Clark Greg who's really the guy who buys it and he keeps predicting It's like how do you know this also the episode where they interview Josh Molina for the job Yes, and she was like okay, so where is your fortune?
He goes football. She was let's talk basketball I know the look on his face. What what's the like what's the three problems that the nicks have to do to fix their nails?
Yeah, and the last one it's Spike Lee needs to sit down and shut up If you haven't watched sports side it's out there you can get the whole series product for probably next to nothing Yeah, well, I'm so disappointed that I mean you you can you get like newsroom and You get West Wing on Netflix to get newsroom on Amazon for pride, but no one has newsroom was so amazing Oh, yeah, it's exactly what news should be and I love it when people are posting that video of like the first five minutes of the Yeah, the first episode and I'm like no keep watching don't just go watch that go watch that whole show Yeah, Emily Mortimer Crushes in that show as much as I love the first episode in the first five minutes Well, I talked about why America's not the greatest country You also need to watch the very last episode brother you ain't lying right where it all comes back around Oh, right and they are they're they're calling out the tea party and call them the American Taliban and can I say that Alice and pill could be one of the most underrated actresses in Hollywood right now. Oh, yeah, why is she not getting more work? I don't know.
I'm sure there's a louper video about that somewhere. Yeah She's a me and I'll tell you I Now they're I've also heard rumors that now Westworld might get pushed back a little further Saying it's not coming out until 2018 now. Now they're saying summer 2018 of the rumors.
I'm hearing Rob I'm okay with this because we have game of thrones But we have to see who's gonna take the Iron Throne. Yeah, I've got my odds on on Daenerys I want to announce I think there needs to be a joint like you know press podcast outlets We need to do like an hour long special talking about game of throats with all of our Beds on what's gonna happen and then see and then wrap it all up after it does happen I've got a buddy of mine that every other week during Game of Thrones season. He actually power ranks the families I'm just like I'm like okay, it's been two weeks Brandon.
Where's it at? Oh Marcus, it's Babylon AD that you were talking. Oh, I actually Rico just said that in the chat room, too.
Yes, Babylon By the way, it was not that bad of a film. I think he's hiding on the bike and it Babylon apparently I'm the only one that believes this you know, I'm not gonna judge you outwardly. I'm just saying we each have our He says Britain is critical.
I might be even more critical. I don't know. We'll see Well coming out this coming week in a theater near you somewhere Fade of the furious So if you're ready for that get ready.
Yeah, it's coming out next week right next. Yeah a week from today Also a movie that I'm hoping to see tomorrow night the lost city of Z Which is showing right here at the Dallas International Film Festival bringing it back around But it's a boy. It's a late showing and it's a long film Well, the other one too and we all have press greenings like next week.
Uh, the promise. Yes I'm like I just got that email yesterday. I was like But it's like it's like our vendors know during during film festival week they kind of Scale back but man, they're just we're full bore right because we got three next week I know they got thank god for finding a couple of screeners there We don't have to actually go to this screening.
I can like and another film showing at the Dallas International Film Festival That's getting a release next week a quiet passion Yes, with uh, I just lost her name from sex in the city Cynthia Nixon. Yeah, so that's that's showing here. It's also going to be getting a wider release Uh, I'll say another movie.
I'm looking forward to is free. Was it free fall? Is that the name of it?
Don. What's the name of that film? We're staying next week done About the the women rider in Britain.
No, no, that's uh What's the movie we're seeing Thursday? That's free food. It's something fire free fire.
Right. That's that's about the British thing, right? Oh, there's another one the day before that said that's it.
That's about the British filming it about the British thing See, I can't keep my day straight because there's like two or three. I'm like the festival's not over yet I know come on Well, and this is always the night that that you know You don't even want to say it starts to wind down because people are still really full throttle We're waiting for everybody to show up from dfs honors. It's just probably just now giving out It's and it's a gorgeous night here I just I love hanging out at this festival By the way, uh something and because we're not back on our podcast, but I but I know we're all nerds I kind of want to sure plug this um Outcast to anybody.
Have you the anybody watch outcast that was on cinematics my wife watched it And uh and I thought she I think she kind of bailed halfway through okay No, she's watching outsiders. I'm sorry on WGN. Well, I do.
She is watching that. I do love that show as well That's a great one. I don't know why I liked it, but I'm drawn to it every week But no outcast it had Brent Spiner and it's basically about a guy who commit exorcisms and You know people are being taken over by demons and and I thought it was about the hip hop group.
I'm sorry. Yeah I that's exactly. I didn't know what it was, but I sure watch again and I got hooked Brent Spiner is great just basically, you know like he is and anything he does Well, he just Season two is about to start up at the end of this but And I had a chance to watch like if you're a fan of this show Uh, the the first episode of season two, you know, it's out there because they're actually premiering it in the UK Uh, okay, can I did it with taboo or it was on the BBC before you're here.
Exactly. God. I love that show I I still can't fully explain everything that I just saw I We said I told him about this.
I was like the thing about taboo is you watch it and you go I have no idea what's going on But I can't stop watching because this is awesome. Well, I we haven't really done a full review on it Because I feel like we have to watch it again to be able to digest my boss at the same thing I guess I'm gonna go back and watch it now knowing how it now that how that season ended So I need to pick up on everything that I missed that was kind of unraveled in the final episode That final episode was some of the most gangster stuff I've ever seen Well, still the best line of that season was when Jonathan Price's character The end of episode seven. Yeah, I have the use for you It's just Tom Hardy is just that guy.
Yeah, no, like he's I'm like he's reading the phone book Yeah, I'll be tuning in and by the way you could have saved suicide squad if you had actually waited for him to be Rick black It wanted Academy award You know you have to say the words Academy But I would like to also say the following Legion finale Fail That's what I had to say about that You ever see the Denzel movie fallen yes, that's the finale of Legion I'm just saying that I don't care if I'm reading it because I'm saving you an hour and a half of your time What you don't like the the movie fallen? No, I don't think it's a bad film I'm just saying that's what they did for the season finale of Legion That movie that show had so much potential Yeah, like the middle third of it like my wife walked in one night and we're having dinner and I was watching I think it was episode five and she's she looks at me and she goes Do you know what's going on right now and I'm like okay the really the only thing you need to know is right now They're all in his head. Yeah, that's that's really all I can tell you Our blogger Alison Costa who actually was able to come out for one night at the festival She's our she does all the reviewers on the superhero shows and she texted me the night that it was over and like This is so trippy.
I don't really understand and trippy's the only word to describe that I can't turn away Exactly. It's it's the three headed dog Yeah And they tried to do the post credit scene and I was like Okay, that's a thing like that's all I can say speaking of shows that wrapped up this week I think we we got to mention black sales I don't know if anybody is kept up with black sales you're the guy still watching that Okay, first of all Yes, that was another one my wife watched for about three quarters of the first season and then she bailed All I have to say is if you read the book treasure island. I mean, it's basically a prequel.
It sets up the legend It's starting with a legend. It ends with a legend. Okay, but it ended it ended the way it should Because it leads you clearly up to what sets off You know what is going to be treasure island, but if you love Spartacus if you love the I really like the Spartacus Black sales is basically it's replacement, but you're dealing with the legends of pirates and You know the political maneuvering all the deals that you know go back and forth And Toby Stevens I haven't really seen anything great that Toby Stevens has been in since he kind of played the villain of You know die another day and then he was in another show called Vixen Yeah, but he was so amazing playing Captain Flint That we spoke earlier on the show about our love for James Bond I can't defend die another day No, no outside of it being the only bond film in history where the person who sang the theme song was actually in the film itself right Because we don't count for your eyes only because I don't We're on the sides of the spectrum Well, I mean and because you with with for your eyes only it's the only time at the person singing the theme song has been in the opening Credits but right dying other days the only time for the person was the scene Well, but I mean he's still made kind of a good villain even though the movie was stupid.
That's my point I mean it was too much of an homage not much of a movie it was better than ever saying ever again But you got to like Miranda Frost though. I leave at the very least. Yeah, I mean well, you know Again black sales it for the fans out there that love this show I'm not saying the last season was as good as previous seasons But it but it wrapped up nicely to end it the way it did and it builds the legend of the pirates And they do have this really great line because I'm still digesting my review.
Yes. I'm the guy that finished all of it So I'm the guy for that one guy that that's gonna do the review is this the season finale the series No, it's all it's over It's the series for now, okay But the character that you know the guy that played Jack Captain Jack Rackham and it's not entirely accurate on hold on Did you see his name is Captain Jack Rackham? Yeah, but that's a real pirate.
Okay. No, no, no, no They're talking about James Bond naming conventions The only two pirates that weren't real from this was John In Flint But you know, but everybody else from Treasure Island in the history of pilots. They were real pirates But he tells it Just because it isn't true You know history doesn't have to be Not true for people to believe it just cuz yeah, just cuz you don't think it's true doesn't mean it didn't happen.
Yeah So in building that legend and I think that's what makes that series great now you said there were four seasons. Yeah, okay With that for the naming guys out there. That's him do me.
Yeah For the navy guys the tactics if you love the movie mastering commander, which I absolutely love and I'm an army guy Okay, what you're looking okay, okay, let's let's be clear on something And allow me allow me to take this okay, okay You're also talking to our resident video game nerd So there's going to or geek I apologize Cuz geeks are nerds or social skills. That's a difference There was a a level of expectation when it came to that film because He does the video game with the kids with the clothes and the hair right That people that were fans of that video game series put an expectation level on that that it Quite reach okay, and I understand that and I feel your pay was that well enough Right what video game are you referring to he's talking about mastering commander and the movie the Russell movie Isn't that based on a video game series not that I'm aware of you're thinking you're thinking assassins creed No, no, no, no, I'm talking about messing with Russell Crowe I thought that was based on a video game. No, it's based off uh based on a series of books Yeah, I thought there was a mastering commander game not that I'm aware of Well anyway, okay, so please ignore everything I just said Retraction bliss because of the old-school naval tactics and how accurate they were with that I'm right into the microphone, Micros not to the side Right here you're you're over here.
You need to be here. Sorry about there. You're much better But if you like dealing with old-school naval tactics That's why you will also love black sales because captain Flint demonstrates all that is the British is the brilliant tactician And they really in the CGI and Surrounded the actual they actually built a full-scale British naval warship from this you know 18th century For the set uh-huh, so to show all that and how they maneuvered and fired it Don't that those kind of gigs.
I love that you're gonna That's why you would love like sales and I think that added to everything Of why that series was great, but it's still not better than battleship Well, wait, wait, wait, what was the one that Malcolm Vitch was in on NBC that lasted like a season? Oh cross and bone cross bones Right, it did yeah, that was just horrible It's like that that came like right on the heels of blacks NBC has to learn That they don't have to be on the right we have to do a version because everybody's doing it philosophy powerless But thank you. I'm so glad you said that.
I'm sure this is the first episode It's way too wacky. He's smacky. He knew it's horror and I love Tudic and I love Danny Poodie You had the hudges how you doing you had one great nerd show in the last 10 years and it was called community Oh, I love that show and community the David Fincher episode alone right the whole series the David community Kicks the big bang theories, but in so many ways I can't do the big bang theory.
I do too. It's not funny I can't we have a podcast coming up titled why the big bang theory is not funny It's talking about great nerd comedies It's one of those oh look at And it's like no, I kind of lived this. Yeah, she'll just because every shirt you buy you got off a tee fury doesn't make you fun.
No, you know, I mean NBC used to be the king of like great sitcom comedies and then they just went off the rails of course Yeah, I mean I was talking with a friend of mine this week when we were talking about sitcom comedies She's like well, I still love the golden girls. I love the golden girls. They were funny.
It's never into that show Well, watch the handful of episodes of the golden girl with my mother and my grandmother I'm not ashamed to say that I all four of those women were funny Oh, I'm not saying they weren't funny. I just never watched the show. Yeah, but is it cheers?
God know No, it's nothing and nothing can be is it friends is it mash? No Well, I can still watch mash to this day. Oh, who can one of my favorite?
One of my favorite sitcom jokes of all time comes from mash in the episode where Hot lips had to have an appendix of appendectomy and and and Hawkeye says hey look you're going to be fine I wrote I wrote the book on the appendix, but I also wrote the appendix, but they took that out that comedy That is comedy people You know, there's a great episode of mash too that I think really signifies the bond among veterans and it's It's the one where the last we're Henry Potter is the last surviving member of his platoon from World War One And he gets the bottle of brandy and he shares it with everybody and tells the story And of course when you know Winchester is just geeks out about how old great David Ogden steers. Yeah That that they had that on the other day because they were I think it's Is the Sundance yeah, I think it's Sundance channel now that is doing more syndication on man. Oh really Well, I know AMC is also doing it.
It may have been AMC, but it's one of those channels in the last And I saw it and it it's it's always one that touches me because of that Being an Irishman, you know both sides of my family. It's not about The funeral or anything like that. It's about the wake where everybody's drinking.
Thank you sir for sitting down with telling stories and celebrating your life and Right as a veteran. That's the perfect tribute and you know, you mentioned AMC There's a show that we still haven't talked about humans. No Into the badlands.
Okay. Well, that's the other one. Oh, all right Geek out Rob Show so much the fact that you're not watching into the badlands hurts my soul.
I want you to know that Chad because You will not find a more awesome character right now in deep television in the widow in the widow I know you've gone off. I have like the widow is is is the bar right now And I'm ready for this week's episode because they're having the big meeting with all the barons Yeah, it's about to get real I've seen parts of it because it comes on right after the walking dead I just want to say this Setting that up. I immediately go to the godfather today.
I settle all family business. Oh, no, it's about to happen Really it's that serious the opening the the season premiere for this season As much as I love the six episodes of season one I got through the season premiere and I was like They've already up their game with the fight choreography. Oh, yeah And and that's not to say anything bad about season one because the fight choreography season one Oh, I kicked out when he broke out of the prison and he's trying to kick him in the chain it just Dude you really seriously binge it this weekend.
Okay, because I get season one's only six episodes and this week is Episode four of season two. So it's not gonna take you that long to get caught up by the way I didn't know I mean I love Nick frost anyway because he's Nick frost But I didn't know how well he was gonna like He's growing on me in this show right that that's where I was going. I'm glad you're with me on that Yeah, I like him too.
I'm a huge fan. Yeah wife outdoors that him in this show that first episode was really wonky for me But now that they you know, I thought they were gonna be doing this whole season like yeah But you but you know what they're different from each other But now that they're they've broken the chains and they're they've gotten to where they've gotten And I was like right one good. Well, and that's the scene that endeared me to him is when He gets the rat.
He eats it And then he uses the bone to pick the law. Yeah That's all that pretty brilliant. Okay, we're I did see that that was we're good That was genius and I like how they're they're not sacrificing anything with this full season order too Because that was my worry is well now they've got a 12-to-old episode season.
Are we gonna be watering down the story? Are we you know is is the storytelling gonna slow down? It really has it.
It's really held up well And it's kind of like AMC has really they're they they cracked a coat Of let the people that run these shows run these shows right now some would argue that's that's worked against itself I've heard a lot of people that have bailed on the walking dead this season Well, you know what you know what really did it It was that first episode. I think they kind of went over the line with how gruesome it was I think there's there's another of a shock value with We were okay to a certain point and we knew Negan was gonna be bad But it's you went so far We can't watch every moment with him and I'm kind of the same way. It's like I'm at the point now.
I read the spoilers. I know what's going on. I watch the last episode But I I'm waiting for them to finally kill him.
I'm like I'm done tell me about the point where they kill him And you know what and the longer this show goes the less I'm concerned that I've never watched the episode It just it didn't appeal to me in the beginning and it doesn't appeal to me now Um the walking dead is one of those that it it's hit its peak now you've hit this master villain People are warring with each other people are Coming together to fight the evil villain of like I feel like you you've done everything It's not so much the zombies anymore because Everybody's learned how to deal with them. They're not the main and you know antagonist. It's other warring clients And I'm at the point now with the walking dead that I did when you remember the show revolution and everybody fighting against each other It's like that show got old.
I know it lasted two seasons and it was with NBC and we're like three seasons or something Yeah, it just After 22 episodes and this has always been our biggest argument on that nerd show Quit making 22 episodes seasons brother. You're not gonna hear debate out of me. You're not gonna hear a debate out of me take this anymore Well, I also don't understand Are we just not scheduling properly?
Because why is it that all of your DC shows are taking four weeks off It's just so that they can finish in May sweeps. Why are we not starting later for the second half of the year right so that we can go power through Well, we when we did our panel at all con uh a month ago and in our panel this year was how to fix DC comics mostly the cinematic universe But we had a lot of complaints about the CW and in terms of how to do everything If you're truly going to be the DC TV channel and you want to develop everything I don't have a problem with doing 13 episodes of arrow all in a row and then going to flash the second half of the season And splitting up the more characters that you can bring in like bring it back constantly for god's sake. Yes We got somebody in the chat room that says they they are a huge fan of Nick Frosty They want but they also and then switching to the walking dead They want Negan to die, but they do like Jeffrey Which you know what I can't debate that I can't debate that I'm a big fan of Jeffrey Dean Morgan sure Uh, but yeah, I just I don't understand the timing and everything like Got them hasn't been on since January because they made way for this 24 legacy Which I'm barely holding on to let me just say that I got a four episodes in and that's it It's good.
It's not going to be 24 because there's only two episodes left which is only going to make it 12 episodes Well, but they did that when they brought Jack Bauer back And I like to people involved. I don't have a problem with I just oh look. I love the fact that Tony Elmeda is back in you know He's like a black ops guy, but they're not really using him.
Thanks for spoiling that for me Yeah, sorry, I bailed after two episodes. Right. Do you really care?
You have kind of bailed on well, I got through about three episodes and I got about six weight So well, well, it it's great. Oh, it's your wife is in the chat room sir. Oh that yeah.
Yeah. Oh look It's great tools. It's great to bring back the you know This kind of show and reminisce and all that But you're never going to be replaced the feeling of how cool 24 is when it first started in the first four seasons Well, and it always had such a strong cast too You know like for instance go and more shower who's with us last week exactly Moved by the way could not be nicer We could not be happier that he did the show with us.
I was I was I was listening back to the show going Do that really did happen? Yes, really really recording of that. Yeah, I mean I've seen the picture on Facebook.
It did happen right still on I didn't realize that I saw a picture. It's like probably could have taken those off for the picture Rob You sure are a podcast. Well played.
Well played. Okay, speaking of thought. I don't want to bring up one thing for you to that like you're saying about these episodes you look like Revolution I watched the first season You look at lost You get so Season you're like huh?
What do you want to miss a new doing that? They jump the sharks so fast. Let me just say about that show personally.
Oh god smartest man alive because I called that in the first episode And everybody involved was like no, that's not what it is. We're going to reveal to you And it's exactly what I said it was the first episode So I didn't even have to watch the show what that it was like jumping Universes or they're all dead. No reason that they were in purgatory.
I called that from the first episode I was like this is the deal with the watch the show and the other reason I didn't watch lost is that alias was still on And I cannot handle to it JJ Abrams projections at the same time. I still argue that they're they're not really dead But that's me reverting back to Dante and the nine levels of hell and stuff like that that you just but there was just like No, that's not what it is. No, but oh by the way It was kind of like they did and another spoiler and if you haven't watched it you're a communist That'll start 2.0.
I'm a communist where it was Starbucks. Not a silent Starbucks. Not a silent.
Oh, did we mention Starbucks? It's out come on man But what that tells me is you know, you're not writing far enough ahead Well, here's a problem with like lost it was supposed to be three seasons right and then Well, yeah, halfway through the second season The execs at the network said this is such a big hit you ended after three seasons Guess what? Ah So they sent it to seven where you just got so what yeah, but I also think they can be a very bad thing I don't think they believe that they were gonna actually survive season one And then when it is like oh shit, we have to write some more easy Okay, speaking of Fox Disheaks yet does anybody care that prison break came back my wife does you know what she's the only because my wife was huge in a prison break So my told her it was coming back.
She was just like Now I'm gonna be to be to be careful. Okay. No, hold on.
He asked the question. We answered the question Hold on. Yeah, I'm listen I will admit that I have not watched the first episode yet and it will be a while before I get around to it I know what happened again I keep up with spoilers But I also prepped myself by watching like the last few episodes of season four and remember how it ended and You know yada yada yada but everybody dies right yeah As rebooting shows and bringing stuff back in Touching my geek nerve.
I'd like prison break from what it is But they got old like after the second season For my first season cap got it. Yeah, the second first season was incredible second season was good and didn't they do A rip on that on community if I don't if I remember correctly. Yes, they did Okay, I thought they did a rip on that on community as well We do want to give you a quick sports update Breaking from ESPN about 20 minutes ago.
Russell Westbrook has joined Oscar Robinson as the only players in NBA history to Average a triple double within a single season So Although there might be some shenanigans on that because I think there's a few games in there where The the rest of his teammates were doing certain things that we're going to guarantee him a triple Okay, like maybe blocking out on a rebound so that he could get it and up those numbers, but I mean it's one of those things It is and I really think that this season With Russell Westbrook and and congratulations to him on that and god bless him But I think it's diminished the greatness of the triple double Yeah, doesn't have the The allure the the mystique that it had at one time so what I just keep saying messed around and got a triple the only thing that I'm Wondering is is Cleveland actually gonna be able to win the east because weren't they tied with Boston? I think they're still fighting through it. I just I would but it's still the Eastern Conference I mean the end of the day it's still the Eastern Conference and I'm an Eastern Conference guy I love my heat.
I will ride or die with my heat. I get that but it's still the Eastern Conference is still the weaker conference Hey, by the way, I know a player you can have I mean, it's gonna be like a year before you get him, but you can have Derek Rose. No, we don't want him Because just in that sentence Derek Rose and broke his ankle again I know look as a bulls fan and I and I talked about this with Spencer Heyway when I interviewed him last year at dip It's never gonna be as good for me You know the bulls in the 90s and it's been like a shit show in Chicago like he's in the last 20 years I don't want to express a tag this show.
Sorry. Sorry. Oh the only one we do on a regular basis No, that's the only one the only one time ever But yeah, I mean, yeah, I mean the bulls of the 90s that's you know the heat were still in their infancy I mean, I was a bulls fan pretty much when Michael Jordan went there.
I followed him sure I loved watching those teams. I loved watching those teams because that's when teams are teams It's it wasn't I mean Jordan was really the one of the first guys where it was There was more of a focus on him than there was on the team and he had great supporting cast around him I mean, yeah, you have the the showtime linkers in the 90s, but there were still multiple guys on that team you talked about now It's the LeBron's it's not the Cavaliers. It's the LeBron's right You know and it's I don't know the NBA now just doesn't do as much for me as it did when I was I I think the 90s That last come I mean, I would say that about the uh about the spurs teams because they've had such a great like run in the pop coaches them up.
Yeah, pop coaches them up, but other than that, there is nothing that excites me I mean, I'm enjoying Boston this year for the simple fact of I don't know of I don't know any star on there except that Isaiah Thomas kid In the fact of what Danny Angel has done to put this team together of no names don't like Danny Angel 30 player Say it right now. Hey, I'm sorry. That's not Danny's Danny fairy never mind wrong Danny.
But like I said apologies to Danny Angel I will let you I will let you let everything they've done to put this together this team together that to compete So I'm all about Boston. I'm like when it with a bunch of no names. I'm good I like those kinds of stories.
Yeah, I love those kinds of stories I say teams for right. I just don't want to see LeBron and another You know NBA championship. You know, it's just it's just so weird when you realize he's been in this league for 14 years Yeah, we live in that world You know, but as much as I don't want to see him like playing anymore, and I think he's done I absolutely think you should do comedy because you you nailed it in train right you were hilarious I still haven't seen that.
Oh, you mean I've seen that and you haven't I know That's me the running joke of him being so extremely cheap You know, and they kept making jokes about that throughout the movie. Uh, he was just great at it Although I didn't see that he was like a natural. I didn't see the clip with Bill Hader where he was like You didn't come and see me at Cleveland.
He came to Miami. Well come on, man. It's Miami You know, well, I had your brothers.
Where would you go? I mean we talked about this briefly, and I don't know if you realize Marcus S&L comes back tomorrow night with Louis CK But starting with next week's episode the last five episodes of the season for S&L will be live in every time zone Really, so because what they've been having problems where they do it on the east coast Right, and people were giving away all the jokes on social media So by the time the west coast got to see a lot of it with ruin So the west coast is going to get S&L starting next week at 830 Because it's going to be live in every time zone because the spoilers is just making that show bang Dude this season's been good This season has been we want to thank President Trump for making S&L great again. You know Alec Baldwin wants to thank you Did you hear that story the interview he did where they like asked him like he's getting like 1500 in episode He's 100 yeah, he's getting paid next to nothing.
Yeah to do that show And he's brilliant If you to come to me 20 years ago and said Rob you're going to be the biggest Alec Baldwin fan because he's going to do Right, I wouldn't beat you with something near me because I was always like this guy so over the top And he's so cheesy, but when he found his comedic chops. Oh 30 rock. Oh, it put a whole even before 30 rock.
What got him 30 rock When he started really just realizing where his comedy chops were. Yeah, it put a whole new life on his career Although one of my favorite lines of dialogue of his was in Miami blues He says you shot me know I fired a warning shot that hits you You know Daniel Duret and I we're talking about this last year at dip that If you're a film buff there's a great film that everybody should see about how it's done on a film set in state May which is I've been wanting to watch that And we started continuing it this year we would walk around go you huskies That was that was the motto But Alec Baldwin is so hilarious as like the you know creepy petaphole actor And do William a man you would have been boy right We may make she just looks at a stop it Well, you know what happened last time and he goes hey everybody needs a hobby And I'm not afraid to say it enjoyed the boss baby. All right guys I'm gonna jump off.
It's been great. I think always an honor to have you with this Marcus. All right I'm gonna turn on turn on the mic here All right We have more guests coming to so was you're listening to the clubhouse podcast I wanted to let you know sir.
We're at the one hour 51 mark. It's really we are I mean according to according to audacity and they're keeping an eye out for me We have guests joining us now gentlemen your your mind your life talks clean into him like right where I am right now And introduce yourselves Hey guys My name is Vishvalve Naney I'm a short filmmaker in town. I have a film cut sludge and a rain.
This guy shot it Hello, I'm garrison armiston. I was the cinematographer on sludge and a rain It's like I'm always kissing the camera. It's okay.
It's all right. You're fine. You're perfect.
You get a close to the podcast Sorry, that's why we have the windscreen you're fine. Oh So did you show during the short block of the festival? Yeah, we showed a last last week in Saturday and Sunday So that was block one block two it was a block two.
Okay, so and I'm assuming Q and A's for both blocks I went really well. I feel like there's like a pretty good turnout Uh, the theater look pretty full actually. Yeah, I mean that's I mean we say that because like it's like hard to get people I feel like two short blocks Um, especially when it's like such a crowded film festival with like pretty good movies I can say I went to the New Orleans film festival with this new and uh, it was a better turn out here for sure We'll take it a better.
Yeah, well tell us about the short one Uh, okay, so it's it's about a girl who drops out of college to take care of her family in South Dallas and we filmed Like the exteriors of it in Dallas. Okay. Well, thank you.
Thank you for the revenue. Yeah, uh, and We're actually planted like a okay, so so it's the film basically Is about like the girl dropping out of college and like it all happens on one day about her decision to go back To you see or or to stay and end up staying um, but To like visualize her frustration. We like planted like a field of like not a field But like a patch of cotton plants and like this like open area and then it like it's like burned by the end of the film But we like burned it through visual effects.
Oh, okay, so it still exists Uh, and I think probably visual effects I just allegedly Yeah, you can't hear that on the podcast Anyway, I really we really want I think we should visit it tomorrow I was gonna say you got to put on social media go see it see it's out there and we should check it out tweet it Facebook it Instagram All those likes uh, yeah, so besides here in New Orleans where else is it showing um so far just New Orleans in here Um, we're waiting on other ones Got denied by plenty Well, it makes it but it makes it that much sweeter than you get when you get when you get the yes Yeah, you know the yeah, you can't enjoy the mount top if you don't have the valley right yeah exactly Yeah, so we weren't the right fit for those festivals But it wasn't on you know, there's the silver line quality of the film alone. Yeah Thank you. Let me let me count ask it to you this way Is do you feel like you've told the store you want to tell or would you rather expand this into a feature if the opportunity arises itself?
Um, so yeah, I've been I've been writing it Uh, different ways I've wrote I've wrote like a feature treatment for it. Um, I've also written it I am writing it as like a digital mini-series. Oh, okay.
I think it could fit well for like this like It's like a new model for like dramatic digital storytelling Absolutely uh in series called 10 by 10 which is like 10 episodes and 10 minutes and episode. Oh, okay, um and it explores like a sort of like I mean like from a filmmaker point of view you can be like very stylistic with each episode you can you can try to explore different sort of like um tones and movements I think uh, this is all very general but um I'm writing a treatment in that format So maybe explore it in that direction. I feel like um Interestingly enough.
I think I think moonlight sort of hits the similar themes um in some ways and visually it looks similar to my film But we filmed it totally separate As far as I've ever seen I just want to say on the record we did it before me. We've been lighted before moonlight. Yeah We haven't gotten the same amount of praise, but we're waiting.
Yeah, well, we're waiting But but I like this in this 10 by 10 format because with the technology moving as fast as it does It gives filmmakers a better opportunity to get their art out there Without having to break the bank and you guys can do this in these smaller chunks So maybe it doesn't impact you as much financially so you can get that ROI Right. Yeah Yeah, so I mean there are there are sort of like OTT platforms that are embracing that more It's hard. It's hard because you still have to be with like a distributor that wants to promote you You can always release it on youtube But to get the eyes on it to make the next thing Uh, you got to love it with sweet Caroline leaves out for the inside Yeah, that's what filmmakers sound like But that's this night every year at the festival.
Yeah, you know, it's great right after dfs honors Everybody comes back here and we all do drunken karaoke and it's a look how many years have you been doing this podcast? This is our fourth year at the festival. We've actually been a podcast for almost seven Congratulations.
Oh, thank you. We love this step festival every year And it's it's really cool to watch how this festival's grown You know, it's this is the 11th year of this festival. Yeah, and every year it just keeps getting better And they keep raising the bar which I'm just in the fact that they let these two shrubs come up here and do a podcast on a patio on a Friday night Are you kidding?
Yeah, I'm all about this kind of cold over here. It's a beautiful night We're just very unusual for this time of year in Dallas So you I've resigned myself of the fact that I'm a schlub because he refers to us that all we are schlubs I mean, you know nobody knows us We live in relative experience we're getting there and I'm okay with the relative experience we've done this for four years Obviously, we're getting no so yeah, it's loves a microphone putting putting this back on the rails. How long did it take you to film it?
Um, I think it's like six days Six days on set for how long is the weather short? What was that how long was the short was it? It's it's about 12 to 13 minutes long um Yeah, I mean production was about six days writing took about like a month a couple months um and What else so casting took took a little while I mean yeah production itself was about six days.
It was these this film for Him graduating out of UT, so I kind of have the year to develop it Congratulate it to do all the pre-production and basically make it so yeah Was it I mean did you feel rush or was six days about as long as it needed to be? No, I think I think it was a good amount of time. I mean No, I think I think yeah, we actually probably get done shorter if we have as many locations of film in yeah So the principal photography in the inside locations of film in Austin, which is where we went to school We're we're both from actually and then all the experience are in Dallas So we had to drive up to Dallas the small skeleton crew and basically shoot kind of on the run through different parts of Dallas Chasing kind of the morning light in the sunset to keep continuity for the film.
So It was uh Was a tight shooting schedule. It was great tight. We um yeah, we filmed it like At like sunset Let me want to sleep and then we woke up with like the break of dawn So like cuz we were trying to emulate the same light right on both days Yeah, and I do want to say there's a very convincing passion cotton somewhere in Dallas And if there could be like a prize for a listener that finds it.
I'm just throwing this out here But it is there. It's there I'm telling you should go out there and see what's out there because you know get it for posterity if nothing How often is Google Maps updated, you know, that's fair. That's fair for rich Because that way when you blow up here in a few years you can look back and go you know what that was where it started hot That's where this is career started I'm on that patch of God.
Yeah, that'll be nice to look back So how did you feel it? I mean you said that you had a really good turnout for it How did you feel there was a goodness? I'm sure there was a Q&A afterwards right for both nights or just one Both nice and there were how many shorts in your block.
I can't remember offhand. There's seven. Okay There's a handful.
How did how did the Q&A go? I thought it was really good I mean the shorts that we like Like played with were also really great and I don't know. It's hard because um There's a lot of like symbols.
I feel like in in this film that I made um that are our maybe unexplained Completely But it's up to the audience to sort of fill their own blanks and and and build an narrative in their own heads a little bit um And I feel like I feel like the audience spoke up and asked the right questions And they've worked curious about what things meant um and they ask questions which is more than some audiences for short programs do Yeah, they do. I mean a lot of people just are sort of disengaged. I mean it's it's hard It's hard to watch a short program because it's like an emotional trip man like it's like most these films are dramatic They're all about 10 to 12 minutes long And you're just seeing them back to back and they just wash over you It's like hard to remember.
It's hard to like Because you've like sort of resetting your body to like take the next one. It's I mean, oh, yeah, it's kind of great Where'd you sit within the block? It was like dead center But that's not a bad place to be.
Yeah, you know, I mean were there any questions that just completely blew your wheels off? No, they were all pretty good. Actually, so you reported for any questions As we like to say you've slept since then so you had to think about it a little bit Yeah, I mean, so everything kind of stayed within the rails nothing just made you kind of like okay now How do I approach this?
So all the questions you got were I don't want to say questions you were expecting but more questions you were prepared for right I mean the one question I was definitely expecting. I mean, I've gotten it every time is like What does the burning of the cotton mean? I mean it's nothing unless you see the film but um I mean, that's like that's like a Question that I get every time and if you want to watch the film it's online perfect We can say we're all about shameless self-promotion.
Yes, so it's at type in on your internet Folks on your on your browsers and your things that you do internet-sing with right sunshine in rain film.com You can watch for free. There you go All right, so when I let you guys get back to the party But before we do give out all the social media everything else that people need to know to get in contact with you Maybe other festivals that want to carry the film as well. Oh Oh, sure um, so yeah, Maryland hit me up.
Maryland footfessor hit me out, man. I'll be down to go there Uh, Maryland shot out. Shout out to Maryland.
I love crab cakes. Oh, Maryland Hdc food But no, actually, I'm very honored to be here. It's it's nice.
I mean yeah Oh, where else do you have anything else planned that to show the film coming up? Um, any other venues right now? No, not yet Not yet.
Look these guys up. Yeah, please Sunshine the rain film Gentlemen go enjoy the party. Thank you so much for sitting down with us.
Oh, it's an honor to do so you are listening to the clubhouse podcast We are so there's there's somebody's cooking food and I can smell it. I know it's killing me. Oh As you know, I had a very light dinner before the show I had an onion ring two more days of the festival to go if you got anything on your radar sir I'm still wanting to see score, but I don't know if I'm going to have a chance to Well, that's the main thing I was like because they're not shown it again But I see a bit of just screaming for that.
It's it's pretty good Uh, that's right in my wheel. I was a little disappointed that all of the John William stuff was archival footage There was nothing new interview with him. Oh, that's but they did a really good section in that film about the emergence of people doing scores like um Trent Rezner at his partner.
Yes. Yes Interesting stuff from them. Atticus Ross.
I believe it's an Atticus Ross. You are correct Of course anything that Zimmer's involved in. I mean there's a and there's a really good section during the credits of They got they did interview camera Of course right and he talks about the scoring of Titanic a little bit specifically in this in the sketchy scene Which was really really I mean it's a really nice story that he tells.
I'm sure he has some heartfelt Sentiments to share about Horner, too. Well, but he said Horner like Send him the piano track that they play in that scene right and He called he said he goes I called him and I said I love it. He goes well.
That's the demo. He's like no Just use that. This is what I want to use he goes well.
I know he's this is what you want I mean, and I said yes, and he said all right. I can get this guy. He's a he's the top three piano, but he's like no We're using what you sent me in that scene nothing else.
Don't do anything else. Just go with the word It's a great story. Did they address?
I don't want to go into spoiler territory here, but did they address The Indiana Jones score about how it was two separate themes and then they found okay But because they're like I said all of the of the stuff for Williams was all archival Well, this is all things. I mean, you know, it's it's been out there for a while They they they didn't really spend a lot of time on On Indie though while something did a lot quite a bit on Star Wars quite a bit on ET quite a bit on jobs Yeah, remember you're saying you were mentioning jaws earlier and I was I was always intrigued by the story that the whole Was one theme in it Was another theme and they said now screw it. We're just going to make that one theme and I one thing I found really interesting about that film is how there's a preference Depending on the composer sub composers Don't conduct in the studio.
They just compose They compose and let somebody else they have somebody else conduct because they're in the control room with the director Getting feedback as they're reporting and that how Elfman does it and that and that how surely Walker kind of came to be in the position that she came Probably in and they do it. Elfman isn't it Yeah, no surprise there Also another thing I found really really fascinating and that is most of these musicians are slight readers They haven't seen the score before they walk into the studio So it's surprised to them as much as it is to anybody. They do a little bit on dual the fates Because they they talk they do talk about Abbey Road Quite a bit because how the the different venues within Abbey Road Uh, it's it's really good.
I enjoyed it. I don't know I can't tell you that there were and there was anything that melted my brain because you and I are people that are fairly ingrained Yeah in film score and and and it's what we're well versed in pretty much So I don't know that it and that I walked out like oh that moment was amazing But it was it's a really good documentary for people that want to know more about film score It's a necessarily shanany new light on it for guys like us, but it was enjoyable nonetheless And there's it's just it's really interesting because it really goes through the different eras Oh, but we've got a lot more people starting to come in now from dfs honors as we are now into our three of our show So it's like everybody's starting to come in now. How are you?
Good to see you Doing well doing well. Have a great time There's just some some friends I met last night Uh, when I went I thought Davie on that was presented by the then black film festival. Oh, okay, that our friends from the movie rose.
Oh, there she is She did did not tell you we'd wait for you. Did I not tell you we would wait for you Have a seat my friend. Oh, it looks like your your your microphone took a nose dive on you You're right up on it talk about it tell everybody who is sitting with me right now My name is Sarah Harris and I am the senior programmer for the Dallas Film Society We talked earlier about Alex being one of the busiest men in show business Sarah's almost busier than him When do you find downtime?
That's the first thing I want to ask you know what starting in like a week Because it's like every time I see a film that you intro. It's like I saw this at this festival I saw that I'm like what like do you just have your stuff in storage? Because like how do you even get to go home?
I will that's the thing. I just watching movies all year round So I will probably start watching movies again in May for another festival That is in the fall. How many festivals do you actually get to run?
Um, I program right now for four different festivals I work with Dallas is my main one and then I'm also a short curator for the Denver Film Festival A programming associate for Sundance and then I also just uh, I came a programmer with Seattle International Film Festival this year You are living a dream Well, if the dream is watching a lot of bad movies with 10% good movies then yes But we talked earlier about it if you don't have them out the valley you can't appreciate them out there I mean, there's something about getting like you see that one good movie and then it's an adrenaline rush Oh, keep watching I can do it with the bad ones. I'm totally totally so let's talk about this. I'll let number 11 Yeah What is the one thing that the one film in the festival because there's still two days left But the one film that you've seen in the festival so far that you were just like This is the one that really broke through and I wasn't quite sure it would You know Okay, so there's a film playing on Sunday that I actually watched as a submission for Sundance It's called Dina Okay, and That was one of like a 200 movies I watched that I recommended it got into the festival And then it went on to win the jury prize at Sundance and um, and it's one of those stories.
It's a beautiful film. It's a really interesting story And you know, I didn't know if anybody else would appreciate it as much as I did I just loved it and um, I'm really glad that I was able to bring it here to Dallas too because we get one screening of it And it's Sunday night. It's a lot of stuff going on Sunday nights.
Yeah, like I'm kind of real in this I was I was a lot more optimistic that I was going to get into this until like two days ago Because I'm really interested in seeing patty cakes, but then the announcement went up that it's getting wide release in July And I'm like it is I may have to get there early for this one But yeah, and it's a thing. It's it's the last film in the festival It's gonna be a great way to go out and I'm taking Monday off so I could go to the late show I mean, I was as Again, we talked about this ad nauseam this weekend last week When I saw the schedule and I always make my own schedule from this schedule Because I have a day job so I have to balance things Totally, but I just kept going. Oh my god.
Oh my god. Oh my god. Oh my god.
Like this this lineup It's like the bar you guys just keep raising the bar We like we work really hard to try to find the best of the best and you know It's an eclectic mix and It's a lot of fun to like kind of mix it up and see how things piece together and You know, we're really proud of our program. We're really really proud of our filmmakers You know, it's it's easier when we can find great filmmakers making great work Well, let's talk about DFS honors. You just you finally got done.
Yes How did it go? What happened because we haven't heard anything. Oh, it went really well We have a couple full makers in the house.
Well, well is here. She won for Mr. Roosevelt so she I heard very very good things about that Yeah, yeah, so that's going to get an extra screening as well this weekend Delt won the audience award for documentary loved that yeah, I know me too.
I was saying earlier. I was I was writing my review for it and the I don't know what to call it the twist but the the difference to that film but because of his condition Yeah, I almost was hesitant to talk about it because He doesn't want to talk about it for both of the film and it's like infected me as a bunch I mean, that's the thing about that film right it's there's the turning point where he's like this is you know And what what's at the core of the film is that your greatest weakness is actually your greatest strength I didn't make you kind of realize that like you can do anything you can as long as you're passionate about and care about it You can put your mind forward and do it so tell us some of the other winners. Oh, let's see It's a blur city of ghost was the silver heart winner tonight Which is really great especially considering what's happening right now in Syria Quest is the documentary Jury winner quest destroyed me.
Yeah, absolutely. I was I was telling Chad earlier about like There's a huge turn about midway through that I don't want to ruin for anybody because I know what you're talking about that moment I was sitting in the theater and I just it's been a long time since I physically had to catch my breath Yeah, but I was like holy crap that just happened. Yeah And like I said my my main and I haven't written my review yet But my review is going to say when the credits rolled on quest This is how I should have felt at the end of boyhood This is exactly how I should have been making and it is real and it's heart-wrenching and this family is beautiful The way that they come together and the way that they're you know trying to support each other in their community through every Anyway, when you say what they go through everything like you can't over sell that yeah literally through Everything yeah, but I mean what he's up there fixing his own roof with plywood and he's just standing up there like it I'm so on the way.
Yeah, yeah, it's just I mean it's an everyday kind of family But they are compelling and they're dynamic and there's love there and it's just it's I really I really hope that film gets the attention that life anime Yeah, yeah, we'll see what happens like hopefully my favorite films the last year. Yeah, that's great one too. So what else what else happened?
Oh gosh Well, we had Zoe there. She was there tonight. She looked lovely We also had Ryru so young and of course they're gonna be at their screening tomorrow 1230 for before I fall David Gordon Green told some great stories about his kind of upbringing here in Richardson and Dallas and how you know He used to work at movie theaters and be a ticket taker and that was kind of his week That was yeah, that was like an education for him was to see all those movies and it was really funny Because he's just like mentioning all these places and the first way to our movie He saw and like the for you know where he convinced his parents to take him to this movie and all that and his parents were there And it was really it was really nice tribute and for those you in the area is tomorrow sold out There is a conversation with David Gordon Green at the SMU SMU Museum, which is still open public And then there's pineapple express of the Texas theater, which is still tickets are still on sale for that good I'm sure we put both of that and then Zoe's in the morning so you could actually if you time it right Oh totally because pineapple express is in the evening so you could you could see that you can see Zoe in the morning David Gordon Green in the evening and there's a couple movies in between and there's another Conversation tomorrow isn't there?
Yes, there is Have they revealed the film yet It is And my mind is blue. Yeah, but it's a drug-run halt thing and it's uh whose daddy's Daddy's gone Who's got the will? Oh really?
Yeah, I think I think you just I think it's called daddy's gone. Who's got the will? I think that's the actual name of it Okay, that's gonna be the screening with drug-run halt tomorrow.
All right, and then he was there tonight too He was having a good time. Okay, and any other winners that we need to know about. Oh, let's see The narrative winner the relation trip Really, yeah, I think that's done the few people including James If you take that man off guard Yeah, maybe the hours walking by us right now the great John Walman's here on wildman He's talking about a guy working overtime one and And we just want to say publicly.
I'm gonna turn them in the mic on so he can sit down. Hey John Walman Our fourth year in the row at the festival and you guys could not you guys are a lot nicer to us than you ever have to be So thank you guys for what you do for us every year You got us to get out on a patio on a beautiful night. It's great night Yeah, perfect place for this and after almost seven years doing this show last week was the first time We've ever done the show outside and so both nights have been really really nice Which I wish we could get used to this in Texas, but we've got about what five more weeks and then if we're lucky And then you have to stay in yeah And then you stay inside for six months go to the air conditioning So are you at the point yet either one of you is where have you ex-hailed or are you waiting until Monday morning?
I will have ex-hailed in two minutes when I go do my karaoke song with friend of the show Devon Sarah, thank you so much. Thank you so much And next year if we if we let us back next year you have to come sit with us next year We'd love to all right go enjoy yourself. You've done enough work for the night.
I think John good to see you sir welcome and you're You get to have a couple of minutes to breathe because you got another thing coming up here in a couple of weeks If I'm not mistaken. Uh, yeah, actually I'm driving to LA on Sunday so driving to LA. I'm driving to LA on Sunday So I'll be in LA for a week and and then I come back here for the earth x festival Which is part of the very first year for this film festival part of earth date, Texas So yes, I'll be doing that festival then down to Florida for the Florida film festival to be on the jury there And then off to the Harlem film festival in New York where I'm the publicist as well So you you get to live out of a suitcase for a while a little bit a little bit Yeah, I mean things have I mean you guys have really been getting stuff done here recently Even really been almost working overtime, but it's all paying off Tell us about your experiences at the festival so far this year because this has been crazy this year We know It's like every festival I have a happy moment And my happy moment actually was opening night Because we had fade done away.
Yes, we did who I got fade done away to come to the festival and She she does her she has her talk with Joe laden the wonderful Joe laden and the film starts the screen And she goes I'd like to watch a few scenes before I go and so we sneaker into the house And I sit in front of a she's sitting behind me. We ended up watching the entire film of Bonnie and Clyde And every once in a while Faye would lean over and tap me on the shoulder and go that was a great scene wasn't it? And like like the gene wilder part comes on and she tells me shows you as he was so funny And so I'm watching Bonnie and Clyde with fade done.
You're getting live comments. Yeah, but it's like a commentary Yeah, exactly. It was the coolest damn thing ever did you wake up the next morning go that really happened?
Did I dream? Well, you know, listen again every festival has those moments and you know Um I just I was reminded of one of those moments because as we all know the great legendary Don Rickles. Oh, that's the way Well, we talked about that earlier in the show and at AFI Fest While I was a publicist there we had the film Mr.
Warmth and so we talked about earlier as well I love that documentary. It's a fantastic documentary and and I had so I had Don Rickles on my red carpet And and so you know, so I'm with him and he was great. He was amazing and at one point I'm like writing an elevator with he and his wife and and he's talking about the kids that had been Interviewing him because they were all the kids and and he was making fun of them But in a loving way going they had no idea that kid had no idea right?
So that was great But here the other amazing thing is that his publicist Was actually the son of his original publicist So his publicist Paul Souther chef friend had taken over from his dad and his manager Was Frank Sinatra's manager who then took over and became Don's manager And and and who I became friend his manager was Tony. Oh I'm saying that for a reason it's Tony. Oh Tony.
Oh was his manager Not in Tony. Oh Tony. Tony.
Oh, right So and those guys they were 50s 50s icons those guys so so as I was dealing with them as the publicists They were talking to me and you know as as they would have if if they were talking to some publicists from a studio From MGM or Warner Brothers back in the day because that's how they did it And so that memory it just came flooding back to me on the news of Don's death Of that moment and again that was a happy moment every festival. There's a happy moment and I'm thinking maybe tomorrow I'm gonna have another couple of them because I'm moderating the Q&A With Zoe Deutsche After we screen the free screen you ever film before I fall just came out last month I think yeah So so I'll be with both Zoe and the director Rai Russo young talking with them about everything about her career and about that movie And then afterwards I'm having a conversation with Judge Reinhold after daddy's dying who got the will So I'm gonna have two awesome conversations where I'm gonna talk about their entire careers and everything that goes into them So the very first day of the festival the very end of the festival. I'm book ending amazing moments And we like to call that finishing straw.
Yes. Yes indeed. Has there been anything this year that has surprised you Um, you know what what surprises me and what surprised me me this year is The strength of films that we were able to get In spite of a lot of odds against us.
You know, I you know, I'd praise James Faust Up and down the street all the time. I'm always like Toot is a four shout shout out whatever and I've been I'm at festivals with him And we're comparing notes and you know and and we're scouting films and he's Skyfilms He's asking me whatever but there are films that we should not by any rights have had here Like top of the line films that he was able to work deals and get them here And it was amazing the solid schedule this year. Oh, it really really was Joining us also is friend of the show.
He's here Again, outdressing me because that's what he does Hunter Carson welcome back sir. And now I hand out the Patan Got her Carson John. Thank you for hanging out with us.
Thank you. So hey John John You guys by the way just so you know John makes everything happen. Oh, yeah, he does so Guys to think like it's John.
He's got the clipboard and blah blah blah. No not at all. Oh John makes things happen That do find good in the hours and a 24 hour.
Oh, man. I don't know how he says when I linked him on the page whenever he sat And joined us. I said now now happy to be joined by John Wildman the straw that stirs the freaking dream.
Yeah, he does Yeah, he does. No, keep it coming I'm good now you guys you do the same job Good to see you buddy hunter. Welcome back.
Thank you. Thank you for sitting with us again. Second week in a row Absolutely.
How you feeling brother? Tonight was amazing. I feel pretty good um I'm waiting for that delicious crisp Stella R 12 Well, we had them off to start the show and I'm not a drinker because I can't anymore fair enough That's that's see just see Drake did I get that right?
See Drake. Yeah, see Drake is amazing. Oh my god I'm hooked see Drake's good.
That's I mean and they got the big air stream out with this No, I love those things. You know what I you know what I I'll tell you a story and I will tell you a true story Thank you very much. I actually need a sip.
Cheers. Please do please do You've been running 90 to nothing. I'm sure at least all day today if not all week So it's been interesting.
I got back in town actually yesterday, but yes fair enough um Growing up I always wanted a trailer home because you know um I used to go to movie sets when I was a little kid or I thought the coolest thing was the trailer home because you had like It's a house on wheels and you know when you're five and six. It's the greatest thing ever so This is an absolutely true story and I hope all of our listeners do not judge what I'm about to say after After Paris, Texas My folks were like You know What do what do you what do you want to what do you want for Christmas because Paris, Texas wrapped around the end of the year Okay, what do you want for Christmas? I said I want a motor home You didn't want to transform on the line.
I didn't want to try and care about transformers I didn't want the aircraft carrier GI Joe with the kung fu grip didn't care about beach head storm shadow or Duke I wanted a motor home So we literally they were like, okay, well you made Paris, Texas Like I said don't judge you made some money on Paris, Texas. Why don't you buy yourself a motor home? Hey Seven-year-old me was like, yes, let's do this now So so we probably drove drove drove around the valley with me in the car in the back seat of the car Looking at motorhomes We drove to see me valley in woodland hills and uh, you know somewhere along the line of van i's We found an old winnebego And it we found an old winnebego and I was like yeah, I'm in I am down And we bought a winnebego and I'll tell you what I swear to you as a As a seven eight-year-old it was the best fort ever oh you're kidding me You bought a mobile home.
I bought the best fort ever and so what we would do is we would just all go in there after school And like like you know you if you get enough little kids little third graders you can rock a motorhome back and forth With sheer strength tell me you made it tell me you gave it a Mora Sorry, sorry more run my great parents had a winnebego when I was praying out We winnebego with the w on the side and the end of the w came off it was a stri-rip or you came along and dude it was rad We don't have one of those like ridiculous tires on the back like yeah, right I'm gonna change that giant tire on this 5,000-pound motorhome as I truck down the five You know what let's let's raise the bar because you got somebody sit next to you too And if I introduce her Nobody's gonna actually believe me right so please please please please for the love of all things good and holy talk right And that microphone and tell everybody who's now sitting in front of my my co-host Me I'm supposed to talk. Yes, please Hi, I'm Leah Thompson Oh my god Calvin Klein what a dream. See it just happened.
It just happened dude. There it is There's your diff moment. That's the way it has to happen.
Welcome to the festival. Thank you. It's wonderful And did were you I'm assuming you just guys came from DFS honors as well.
Yes. How was the show? The show was awesome.
They it was a great show That was a lot of incredible films that were honored and then my daughter was honored Zoe do it. That's right for her rising star Award. Yep, and she is indeed a rising star and I'm super proud.
It's a good one It's a good one. Let me let me let me tell you Person from the person who gives away those awards. It's super cool to do it and it's super cool to get them Yeah, it is I first I first heard this connection of your daughter And this is this is true story Wouldn't you guys were on the arsenal Hall show?
A couple of years ago. She was promoting vampire academy right And he's interviewing her and all of a sudden he says something about her mother and I was like oh real And then the camera cuts to you and I was like okay mine now melted And it was really kind of cool because There's no way that you could have been any prouder at that moment that that smile that you had that was a mile wide But at the same time it was kind of that feeling of it's kind of cool But I really want her to have her moment And I thought that was so awesome to see and now you're here with us because you're having the conversation tomorrow With the screening of before I fall which is it's a big game because that just came out Four weeks ago. Yeah, it's still on the theaters here.
That's it's in Dallas and a bunch of theaters So still yeah, it's a great movie. I'm so proud of it She's so you know, it's just such a I'm so honored that she decided to like follow in my footsteps both my daughters So, I mean, you know, it could be weird like I didn't want to do what my mom did, you know, mean either She's caring black so she's an actor Yeah, oh wow, so yeah, so it's intimidating to follow and you know, it totally is right? Yeah, I'm super proud of them I feel like it might mean that I'm not overbearing and I didn't strap them to the to their chairs and make them watch all my stupid movies I will not I will not use all and stupid movies in this woman in the same set.
No, that dog show hunt I don't care that dog don't hunt. Can I can I get it? Can I can I get a question in please do look?
I I've acted before and I and I transitioned to behind the camera and you know, I pretty stuff now What do you what do you like like what do you like about that like like it just it's so dynamic to be like All that stuff happened in front of the camera and now all this other stuff is happening behind the camera Like how do you feel about that relationship? Well, I find that really interesting. It's just like being on stage.
It's like When you're on stage, you have the best view like the theater looks the best from that vantage point And when I'm acting and I look at all the crew I feel like it's the best show You know, there is seeing everybody do all this crazy stuff and no one else gets to see that but us I know isn't that crazy. Yeah, it is great Do you go back to those moments when you go back and look at some of the projects you've done and Where what are those moments that you watch and go? I remember that specific moment from that standpoint It's always takes a long time for me to actually see the movie as a movie Because I'm always thinking about other stuff, you know So just that project that you worked on rather than the finished product.
It was really interesting for me Because I don't mean to bring this up again But um back to the future they they I saw it a couple times like last year a couple years ago They took the music out and had an orchestra play it. Oh wow The Hollywood Bowl and I've got to sit in Hollywood Bowl with like 17,000 people and watch the movie after whatever 30 years and really watch it for the first time as a movie and from a director's point of view like as a film instead of just like oh wait I'm not in this part. So wow Whatever stupid thing that goes through your mind when you're just thinking about it as an actor So it was really fun to watch a move, you know, it took that long for me to watch a movie 100 you go through some of the same stuff and you go back and watch some of the stuff that you worked on especially when you were younger now Are those yet do you still have those moments or can you just see them as films now?
No, you know it take it takes a while um I mean it's The the very for okay, so the very first time that I actually was on set um was in Paris Texas when the character walks down the stairs to see her Dean the very first time and all that's pretty legit like Vim kind of kept us up hard for a couple of days And was like you're walking on their belly anyway, so there's that moment yeah for sure Lea when you see the crew and you're the actor and you're like are they watching me or am I watching them? What's going on here? So there's that existential thing um but Yeah, but yeah to answer your question.
Yeah, man there there are those moments and and as as I grew up Um especially with Paris, Texas because it's a layered film not so much with like a bit of surmars of mr. Norse Um, but with Paris, Texas like as I grew up it changed on me, you know, and then I had kids and then it changed on me and then like You know, now I'm like giving an award away at a festival To filmmakers and I'm like wow, this is really crazy. What am I doing full circle thing?
What am I doing here? Yeah, no I'm sometimes I think like I'm pinching myself What's going on, but anyway, it's really it's a great experience Working in film Everybody please listing please support your local filmmakers support your local artists And let me ask you miss Thompson if I may I don't want to call you by your first name because I don't know if we're cool like that yet but What's coming tomorrow the discussion with your daughter followed by the screening of the film? Have you done something like this with her before?
Oh, I'm not I'm not doing it. Not means like just being in that moment where she's where they're doing the discussion and then the screen Have you been through that with her? Yeah, I have she's been acting a really long time now.
It's like I don't know she's had a lot of movies Um, so it's what's weird to me now is that shit like all I'll say you know Can I help you with this and to be like no, dude? I got it like she She's got it and she doesn't need any hell even today. I was like do you need help with the speech?
Mama, I've gotten awards before I can't handle it And there's that moment, you know, I've got no words of yeah, okay Kind of awesome. It's you know she she helps me It's funny because we all help each other in my house, you know We all like it's like a little Weird like I don't know we all help each other because now you do a lot of self tapes And Zoe when she does a self-tape she likes it shot like a movie with a really beautiful camera Beautiful light beautiful sound she like wants it seriously So we're like always making little weird movies all the time and you get to kind of do you get to see a lot of things through the way She sees it or you just kind of just kick back and go I'm just gonna let you do you and then I'm gonna watch it when it's when it's ready to be watched Yeah, I direct her a lot, but she doesn't like it I kind of figured this but My boy Zoe she's actually been Directed by her mother and her father. Oh, right.
That's a unique experience. Yeah Yeah, you could say that how hard is that to as when your husband's directing her versus when you're directing her how what's the dynamic there? I'm a better director Exactly you do realize by the way she's directed an episode of one of your favorite probably your favorite show right now Did it air two nights ago?
I don't know. I'm not sure when it airs Take a stab at it. I'm saying the goalberg.
Yes. Are you kidding me? I did the Thanksgiving episode where the turkey went over the building I'm such a fan of that show.
I know it's so good isn't it and uh this I think this week was the season finale Directed by Kevin Smith right right the Batman episode was this week I loved that I did not know you directed the Thanksgiving episode of that show talk about it. Tell us about it I was great. It's so much fun It's really though.
It's I've directed a lot, but I've never directed something. I'm not in at all So this is the first time so I was really proud of it. I'm gonna go back next season Oh really good job and it's and it's a show that plays to you.
Yes, very much so you are I mean you are an integral part of that entire story arc of that show I know I know they were like uh I'm I'm in pre-pro and they shove this piece of paper at me and I go what's this they'll just sign it I look at it. It's like this was so they could use a clip of me and Howard the duck when I'm having sex with the duck I remember that episode I just show that to my wife the other night. She's like really?
Hey So they use that on the goalbergs That is awesome. I did not know that and you're getting to direct again Talk about the difference both of you because both of you are directors True is it easy to take off the actor hat and put on the director hat or is there is is there that piece of you that's just like I need to do this or can you actually separate yourself being on that other side of that camera I I'll go first. We've elected me to go first um you've won the coin toss.
I did I'll tell you what it's like it's like There is that moment and for me. I realize what a frustrating Little kid I was to all these directors that wanted me to do something very simple and just hit the mark Just hit the mark. I'm just like just hit the mark and I'm like yeah, but I have my own thing going, you know I'm for me You know the thing is is when I'm uh directing is so hard but now when I'm acting I'm really happy not to be directing Yeah, the only problem is is if someone's really not Great and I know I'm not going to get to my last scene or I'm not going to get They have enough time to act.
I start like Start to just like well, maybe if I just did it this way we could just use we could cut out a shot And then we could get I start to do that just because I I get like You know because my mind starts to work only when things are going really arrive Otherwise, I like to lay back if the director you like knows what they're doing Um, then I'm fine. Okay. That's fair.
If they don't I start to get crazy. I Know we don't want to take too much of your time because there's a party going on inside And we know the guy running the party so he's going to be mad if we hold you to anything coming up that you want to plug Uh, besides more goldbergs more goldbergs. Uh, oh my um the last episode of switched up birth which which ran for five years I directed the hundredth episode like last week, but to next Tuesday this Tuesday is the last episode.
Is that on freeform? Is on freeform? I know that's the final episode of the entire series Yeah, yeah, yeah, so that's a big deal And I also directed a movie called the year of spectacular men.
I was just clicking into that. Okay And uh, I'm hoping I just finished it so I'm hoping and get some traction somewhere and some anything I know we did Plug it again, sir. Hey guys resty revolver follow me on social media.

She was amazing. She was absolutely amazing. Is that what Don was talking about?
It's gotta be because he said something about last year, but that wouldn't have been last year. No I have no clue what Like that just happened Don Don's got bringing us somebody else. We're at the 238 marks Let me turn Don's mic on.
We're approaching midnight in the garden. Yeah, we are approaching midnight in the garden of good Neville Well played surprise was that was that was that was that what you were leading up to? I was trying to Okay, okay, because you were talking about something that's hiding the last year and I was like no No, no, no, no, no, no, no, that would I hurt she was gonna be here and I got it worked.
That was amazing That is Don doing okay, and we haven't known we have a repeat. Yes. Here's a deal Remember Thunderbrook the heavens One of your favorite films from two years ago if I'm not mistaken Same book.
This will make my top 10 of the year really Full price without a doubt in a theater recommendation Which is our standard that's the best week to get is the high standards the top tier and how from do I give those out? Very rarely I will say though we have a review that went up today that he did give it to Okay, well I asked him this before we even went on the air. I'm like is this film gonna be your This without a doubt was my favorite film with a dip this will make my top 10 and we talked about it last week We're gonna talk about it again.
This award winning sir. Welcome back. Thank you for having me You can't give your name real fast Jamison Brooks.
I'm the writer and director of bomb city So which award did you get? Audience award. So you got the audience award So apparently people like it.
So does that mean we're gonna get two more screenings this weekend because I know last week We talked about another screening being scheduled. We get okay, so rumors been going around all week But I think it's finally been confirmed. It's actually Sunday at 5.30.
I want to say I can catch it I can catch it. I think at a magnolia. We have a 5.45 here at the magnolia.
There you go. All right. I got it right that down so I can get it on my schedule for Sunday No, no get Cody get Cody in here.
Please All right, we're we're down to booking people. Okay. This is the composer the composer of bomb city And we were last week.
We were talking about the music. Absolutely. Here you go.
Here's your chance to talk about it Look the headphones on. Talk right in the microphone. Celebrate who you are.
Cody chick. I'm the composer for bomb city Along with my brother. Don't get that you've got you've got the winter Carson seal of approval.
Yeah, he That is a true story Yeah, Hunter said I'm coming straight back from after I see bomb city because I'm gonna tell you guys all about it He could not stop raving about your film. Did you see it though? I haven't had a chance because we were for the premiere We were here waiting on you guys to get out of it.
Come in Sunday. I'm coming Sunday. I'm coming Sunday Sunday 5.45 at the Don make sure you get that on my schedule right over here because I've got now I've got three movies I'm seeing on Sunday at least maybe four.
I don't know yet Because I've got I know there's there's a couple more that I'm seeing but I will make sure if you guys are screening it Sunday I will be here Congratulations, and we were talking actually last week on this show We were talking about the music because I've just put forth the idea that you're more than welcome to steal the credit for of Just doing a Spotify playlist of the songs from this film Well, the soundtrack will be some kind of playlist at some point The score will be a whole different story We are working something separate for the score that we we don't know exactly what yet But we are gonna have some sort of release for the full score the way it's put out in the film talk about your approach to the score Well, we did a lot of different things. We started off obviously testing you know testing things I spent a lot of time playing in different keys Writing I wrote it on the piano most of it on the piano. Okay Start off playing in a bunch of different keys.
I like to work in D a lot but I Kind of moved out of D for this one for some reason to just something moved out of D and We fell to an F minor for most of it and I so I focused on that and then as we started working We were doing a little bit of industrial sound. We were kind of going for this A dark industrial sound and to match kind of the tone with with the punk rock scene and things of that nature So we did a lot of tests with that stuff and it didn't quite really nail it and then we started working in some orchestra pieces and all the sudden The story like came alive was there a soundtrack before there was a score It was kind of all at the same time man a lot of this went down. We were editing He was editing and we were we were all in the same room together and he would be editing and Putting stuff together and we'd be right and stuff.
We would throw it on the screen all the same time We would talk about it discuss it and then next thing you know We'd be like that's good and then we can't work from there and let it's all trial trial and error. Yeah, that's what it's all about so Is as a composer Is it easier for you to deal with composing for a film Without knowing what's on the soundtrack or does that because is that kind of cloud? What you're trying to do or does it really matter if you know or not?
Soundtrack had nothing to do because I've always wondered if when I'm trying to compose a score I would think if I were a composer I'm not sure that I'd want to know what kind of songs they were putting on the soundtrack So it didn't kind of cloud what I was trying to do. I never even paid attention to what was going to be in the soundtrack We went we tried to tell a story with sound and music And as we did that that that's what we did We how long did it really take you to finally get to where you think that you were like Okay, now we're on the right path with the score I would say probably 200 days wow and we finished the score in 289 So once you got once you hit the groove the groove was there and here we go I said it during the Q&A It's almost like once we found what we were looking for it it wrote itself It was like a guiding hand just the funny thing is the piece that they wrote They said it's not for this film exactly. There's no way it was for something a TV series something bigger right Wow, and then and then we all went in there and we listened to it.
We're like no. This is this is perfect. This this needs to happen Don what's going on?
I want to say the sound in this is incredible Okay, when it starts in the first five minutes that build The build the sound is perfect. Okay, I mean perfect perfect and when these scenes hit that really build up You just fill it. I was blown away by the sound honestly.
I was saying For those of you that maybe listen for the first time when we review a film because we actually do separate episodes where we review film We ask two questions how we don't give like stars or thumbs up thumbs down We actually ask two questions question number one. Would you see this again? The answers know we're done But the answers yes our spectrum runs from top to bottom How far are you willing to go?
So first run at the theater, twilight, matinee early morning second run Red box. So you still actually leave your house netflix cable Don does not give first run prime time rankings to very many films Including the one we dropped today I want to say he's given it out four times and we've seen over 40 films this year Yours is one of them on every level Don isn't very yeah, he's a very stingy critic when he wants to be But he told me like right after he called me right after he saw he said do this is the film And of course last Friday it was all anybody was talking about and it was I mean to see this movie and I'm so glad I finally see it on sunday sunday sunday So how are you I mean are you is the adrenaline wearing off? I mean you guys have been full throttle for a week now Man the nerves are wearing off But the adrenaline no, I mean we're curious to see what you know what what happens with this story Because it's not our story We just want to know where it can take itself just like I said the score wrote itself This story is going to take itself to where it needs to go So we asked you this question last week and I'm I've got a week to think about it So I'm going to ask you again because I want to see if it's if maybe you've gotten a little bit more of a solid deal If this could get I'm actually known I'm saying win.
I'm not even ifing at this point You haven't seen it yet though. So I'm I'm going to see I'm taking it there When this gets bigger distribution Is there a studio that you think could handle this film and market it the best That's a question for a sheldon or a producer that's a question for the guy who researches that stuff I mean you've got to have a guy. I will say I will say sheldon's dream come true I hate saying this but A24 is a is a I'm a big fan of A20 it's an artist-based distributor that uh They they believe in what the artist vision is and they they don't want to make a lot of changes and they They get behind every every film that they put out there That would be a dream come true.
There's so many other distributors, you know, I think our biggest goal is just to get the story out there however we can And whoever wants to back it and get behind it if we have a good feeling about them And they have a good feeling about us so we can work together Let's do it if if I can agree with 10% of Don's feeling about this film if there's not a bidding war Then they're then they're they're all communists. That's the only thing I can say because everything has come together for you guys really well We want you guys to go enjoy this party because Devon's apparently turned it up to 11 in there Bombs city you need to see this film. I'm going to see it now that we got more screenings of it And I can't wait are you guys going to be there Sunday?
We'll be there Sunday. Then we'll talk to us I absolutely gentlemen go enjoy the party. Congratulations Thank you very much for you.
Thank you Bobcityfilm.com go go now go often bookmark it tell Tell your mama tell everybody you know about this film. I'm excited dude. I can tell we're gonna check us out What am I doing?
Thank you guys good time I'm dropped a thing here Don says and now it's upside down. Oh Really Come on in have a seat sir I'm will how are you Introduce yourself to everybody Hi, my name is Craig Craig Cole great. Cole Oh my good.
We're just don't just lining them up and tell everybody what you're here for Um, I'm here to have fun with friends at the at the festival and celebrate the award winners tonight. It's fun time. All right Like a shirt.
I think well, you're also going to like what else don't know what it's like tell everybody what you're working on You got a lot going on there. I worst fans. Oh, I'll absolutely like the shirt.
There's the mouse. Oh, that is amazing That is amazing. I love it.
Yeah, we were just we were just ranting about the fact that we don't have an episode's Eight trailer yet. We're wondering where the heck it is also joining us right now Where's that trailer? I you know what they keep telling us it's coming.
It's coming. It's not there Good. I crack it.
Well, let's introduce yourself to everybody on the mic. So on Lee Papper I run the Dallas International Film Festival with a whole bunch of help I'm just the guy that helps bring it all together and And I'm having a blast. We're eight days in.
We're having a great time and we're having a good time right now DFS honors is done. It's done. We announced all of our award winners And you're going to ask me who they are and actually Sarah took care of it for you.
Sarah was here earlier I could not remember them all. I should know that stuff tonight. Thank you for what you do Indeed sir.
Yes. Thank you very much. I told Sarah earlier this week We've had you on the show.
We've had fouls on the show. We've not had her. It's been four years.
She can't duck me tonight All right, we waited for her so she did the show Well, you waited for the greatest night. I get to be on with you Craig. This is great.
Thank you so much I couldn't have picked a better partner. Great. Tell us about what's been going on with you, man Well, I just got done Two days ago working on the Marvel pilot that's here in town.
It's got seven days on it. It was amazing And also freaking cool and can you talk much about it because I know Marvel tends to like to put a lid on a bunch of things Exactly. Okay, fair enough I've never talked about it.
I had a fun time It was a stunt guy and And you've got something else that's It's it's so hard to Something else going on too with what Don wrote on my piece of paper is correct Little fox projects you're working on Oh, there's something else maybe with a couple of guys that are trying to get out of somewhere Prison break. There you go and my wife just freaked out because she loves that show Oh, I spent three years on that show My wife was a huge fan of that show as well That family film here in Dallas, which was great. Yes.
Yeah, very cool. Season is two and three. Yes So I mean, that was a while ago, but you just finished this pilot now taught it can you talk about maybe how Maybe it's the vibe change since prison break to now to the unnamed project that we can't talk about Um vibe change as far as just the the just the film The the industry in Dallas because this it gets bigger every year I mean, he can attest to it.
He's been neat deep in it forever. I am so excited about what's going on in here here in Dallas It's one of the reasons why I've stayed here um a lot of my You know friends have moved and gone where the work is so to say and I've stayed here because I believe in Dallas I believe in the talent here. I believe in um I have to change gears for a second you brought up prison break and my first cousin is Marcus Allen And Kevin Hooks.
No, it's not. Yes. Oh my god.
It's so cool. Kevin Hooks the executive producer of prison break I was at his house one night and I was Talking to him about the episode. He just got finished Directing and I said um, so how do you feel?
You know what? What do you think and he goes? You know what Craig?
I feel like I have the best crew that I've ever had my entire life here in Dallas, Texas Wow, we'll take it. I don't have the depth that I have in LA So if somebody messes up and someone has the wrong pair of shoes on I can't fire my My wardrobe anyway, but at the same time um The crew here it's family and we we love one another because I've worked cast and crew on several projects here Um, it's a beautiful thing and I think that um, it's a shame if um Sort of things that are going on right now would take that away There are there are some challenges in the state government right now So we talked a little bit about that last week. Do you want to talk more about that?
Um, I can say the basics is it looks like because the state legislature has decided to remove The incentives that have been offered by the state in the past for film production to come to the state Um, I I don't want to go too much into it. I don't know all the details I know there's always nothing's a done deal until it's a done deal. It's not completely finished yet Um, but we the Dallas Film Society is absolutely a proponent for Incentives for more film production to occur in the state Uh, it is a an industry that brings so much back to the state Uh, and it's it'll be disappointing if we're not able to have Some bargaining chips to have film production occur just like Craig show Craig shows Hopefully here in Dallas or Texas Uh, and we all benefit when that when film production occurs in the state so I mean, I was watching a film last night and In one of the intro clips they had you guys showed all of the the lists and things that Dallas has become You know, when I saw one of the three busiest airports in the world Like that's insane and they understand that we've spent was at 1.6 billion on our our downtown parks alone Some of the some of those numbers were just staggering staggering and I think more of that needs to be out there But let's talk about what's been happening for the last but nine days now is is day eight or nine is is day nine We've done day nine Of the film festival Dallas International Film Festival 11th 11th annual About 140 130 140 movies have shown so far multiple venues I'm having a blast come see movie tomorrow Craig It's going great.
Well, we've had some great movies great audiences a lot of filmmakers in town And it was a thrill denied to honor Uh, Zoe Deutsch David Gordon Green To to acknowledge our good friend who just recently passed Bill Paxton yes, uh, and to have a great great house 200 300 people and they're having a good time Celebrating film and independent filmmaking and that's The key as you said earlier the the crew that's here the family that's here that helps you shoot It extends to what we do too the the team that we bring together to put on the film festival the audiences are here that in embrace film Uh, the the folks that were able to the new folks that come in slowly but surely every year I had no idea this is so cool. This is exciting. How much fun is this I saw so many great films.
I'm going to go see more movies That's what a film festival can bring to a community and that's what we're here for has there been a film this week That you've been really pulling for but still surprised you on how well it did Uh, our doc feature winner quest is absolutely stunning. I saw that I've I've now this now the third time I've said it on this show tonight. That documenting wrecked me.
Yeah. Yeah. It I said that when the credits rolled This is how I should have felt at the end of boyhood and didn't this film took him 10 years to make it and I've said it before I'll say it again because I'm not doing the spoiler here There's a turn that it takes about halfway through that it's been a long time since I physically had to catch my breath Yeah, and this is a PBS independent lens film it's Paced really really well a lot of times that one of the biggest things about documentaries is You know, I'm looking at my watch constantly.
How long have I been here? This thing belies. It's the perfect pace And it's literally we talked about this with Sarah earlier this couple literally through it all I mean, there's not an emotion that's not represented in this film right and it's absolutely gorgeous Anything else that you were really really happy with with the turn-off for me I mean, I'm not sure you're happy with the whole festival, but anything stand out for you.
I'm thrilled so far. I mean Who knew a card mechanic? Oh, I love that Who's blind a card magician?
Who's blind? Could be so enthralling. I mean the movie dealt Is terrific and it that it won in a one-hour audience award as well So and I don't want to just tout the one the winners.
I mean, it was a great movie, but there's just There's something great about great filmmaking and you don't always you don't know where it's gonna come from Just because you have a name or whatever doesn't That's what a film festival brings. You never know. That's what it brings and that's why we're bringing to Dallas And what's even better is yeah, there's you know, we're deep into the festival But they're still films showing at this festival that you haven't showed yet.
Yeah, okay I can think of it like three right off the bat Advocates small enough to jail. Small enough to jail is a great movie. I'm gonna check that That's on my agenda for tomorrow small enough to jail It's a story of the only bank that was sued by the government after the 2008 financial crisis.
Oh wow And they fought it Really they fought the battle and and it is I it's a great movie lost city of z tomorrow night Yes, you know, you know getting a lot of pub. That's actually getting wide release here in a couple of weeks But you get to see it first at the Dallas International Film Festival Sunday night patty cakes is closing the festival yeah patty cakes is great And I mean, I was telling Sarah earlier. I was kind of like I'm definitely gonna see that and then two days ago I got the email.
It's getting wide release in July So I'm like now I'm gonna have to get there earlier because now everybody knows I was kind of hoping that was gonna One of the best kept secrets, but now I'm gonna have to go see it right It's just such a strong it's stronger every year It's like you guys just keep raising the bar And I don't know how you get to raise the bar because I'm like this is the pinnacle This is the bar and then the next year. I'm going. Oh my god.
I gotta get my sleep now Well, it's a testament to our programming team. It's James her James foul Sarah Harrison Daniel Lobbs They're the guys who make this stuff happen. They they have the connections that know how the knowledge And they go out and get the movies and my my little role is just to try to give them the resources to do what they need to do And don't but don't sell yourself short you you do an amazing job the entire staff does And thank you the fact that this grows every year, but it still has that family feel That everybody talks about it's like they come to the Dallas International Film Festival because It's so I hate these were non-traditional, but in a very very good way don I want to say to Lee thank you for having us for the last four years Honestly, my pleasure.
I look forward to this every year. He'll tell you it's like a family reunion It really is Don don't thanks man. You still have a question to ask don I'm almost asked your question for you.
You still have to ask a question That you ask every year you ask me a question every year at the end of the show I'll ask it. Can we come back next year? Yes, okay, we have to always ask your there we go I was he longed to forget his question.
I just that's he started your job You had much to actually know he's got about a billion tonight cut the bans Don again, if it wasn't for Don not a lot of this happens because we're just in here We want you guys to go party because we still got an hour open in in the room and Devon's a friend of ours So if we hold you too much longer. He's gonna get mad at us We're all about shameless self promotion give us social media give us websites for our people to go He was going home with you Craig Cole. I'm on twitter with a C face book and What's the other one?
Instagram? There you go Craig Cole actor Yeah, you and I have been friends on Facebook for about probably a at least a year believe a little Dallas Dallasfilm.org. There's two more days of films All day Saturday all day Sunday multiple locations.
We got some great interviews David Gordon Green so we doage an honor to build Paxton with a discussion here in the lounge afterwards Judd Reinhold one of his ton of classic dark movies daddy's dying who's got the will come out in 1990 with An extended conversation with him afterwards. So there's a lot of good things to come the next 48 hours at the film And become a member of the Dallas Film Society absolutely they do such amazing things all year all year We go to screenings and they've got rows of stuff for the Dallas Film Society We're such fans of those guys as well gentlemen. Go enjoy the party.
Great. Thank you so much for sitting down Thank you so much guys. Thank you Well, where's I mean what's done got going on because we're at the three hour mark, sir This is the dances with wolves The Lawrence of Arabia of the club outside Too much longer.
We're approaching Gone with the wind levels been her maybe. Oh, I'm not getting them a chariot. It's all I'm saying You'd have to get up by the light by the way your wife did say when you do the preservation Yes, the tablet fell on the floor.
She told me that was your she takes your wife's reaction I Mean how ironic is that we were hearing the power of love right if we're talking to me at all You know she was involved. How are you gonna come sit down with us? Come sit down with us.
All right. I want to leave as those guys get up But we've got a lot going on because you have more guests. Hey leak.
Can we uh can we bump you so she can sit down please? Hate to tell the president of the festival please Ha You you've got some you've got some kids well We have a very special guest that's joining us right now that I talked to last night Go ahead and put your headphones on. They should be over there somewhere so you can hear yourself And get right close to that microphone and tell everybody who you are My name is Linda Edie and I'm the director of film programming for the didn't black film festival who we met last evening after Davy on and You you had a connection to this show and you didn't even know it.
I know it's amazing And we've already talked about them tonight the movie brothers are friends of ours We were just talking about their review and we have somebody else joining us. We have the trifecta sir. The trifecta has happened All here he is stuck the landing But the dead black film festival happens in January you've got you said you gave us your save the date cards last night Yes, I did January 25th through 28th 2018 and also joining us sir tell us who you are Hi James Fowls artistic director for the Dallas International Film Festival You've now completed the circle because we got we finally got Sarah this year.
Oh good We just had Lisa now. We have you that's great. You had Linda Yeah, I let this word to where we just started talking about the dead and black film festival And what I really thought was really neat during your talk last night was It's not just a film festival that there's a lot going on and tell our listeners about it It's really kind of a cultural experience as well I mean we've got spoken word a poetry slam that's going on We've got comedy.
We had a music concert this year We even have a art exhibit at the University of North Texas. They have a art exhibit the museum on the square and then And we're located and didn't on the square so they're like restaurants and a lot of things going on The square's such a cool place. Yeah, so it's kind of a neat You know you'd come spend the weekend with us and just have a real experience some really great film and You know Take some breaks and do some other things as well and you guys were the community partner mr.
Fowls. Yeah for Davion With showed last night. I was there.
I saw it. I was great. I was yeah, it was it's one of those films And a friend of the show Kevin from the movie brothers.
I texted him last night. I told him I'd met you guys Okay, and he asked me in my opinion and I said Davion is an Artsier version of moonlight. That's the only way I could describe it It's really it's well done It's one of those movies you really have to focus on though It's you're not one of those movies like you can just put on them and go grab something to eat or whatever Like it's a movie you need to really sit down and watch.
It's very raw. It's very emotional What did you think about it? Well, I liked it because one thing it a lot of times when we think of gang activity or we think of young people You think immediately the Chicago when and still in rural America.
There's lots going on there and In terms of gangs or kids trying to belong and fit in somewhere That's kind of a universal thing whether you're in a rural area or a city or whatever and you know it Put some light on things issues that kids are dealing with and we were talking about this yesterday Linda how it is It's you're in these rural areas with nothing else to do So, you know, whether you're getting involved with math or we're talking about the opiate thing that's happening around the country now It's in the movie but she has a light on it and gives a real face Unabashed On his face to something that's happening and it doesn't offer answers No, but it just but it gives you an idea like this is happening. You didn't know about it happening in Arkansas So that's where I never could walk down where it takes place. Yes, then Arkansas roll Arkansas But you know, it could be rural Texas Can be rural Arizona the executive producer the film was this year's Maverick filmmaker award winner David Gordon green Who is and we he now we're talking about it's reminiscent of his film George Washington It's sort of it's floating and it's ethereal and it's sort of and it gives you this just Lays it out for you and does again no answers But here's the problem or here's the situation What do you think and I try to love about that film and that director's hot right now I mean, I'm on it's gonna be and he also did the score for the film too And he's like is it 26 25.
I hate him. I remember 26 Way in the rear view I remember what was amazing too is he used in experience actors I mean you had to starve to show This young man that never acted before yeah, exactly. He did a fabulous job.
I think he's taking our class Acting classes now, you know, he potentially now has a career ahead of him. Yeah So that was wonderful as a good stuff. All right mr.
Fest. I know that you've got a you're on a tight time schedule So I got to ask you a couple of questions real quick. I'm actually good.
I'm just yeah, I'm good Okay, fair enough And we've asked this of your of your two cohorts. We have to ask this of you sure has there been a film in the last eight days That you were really pulling for and it really did well and you were happy because you weren't sure Yeah, the relationship which won the grand jury prize um It's a film that some people Uh, yeah, I I'm a totally leopatra under the bus um He's a it's pretty good movie, but I don't know why you love it so much. I go because I think it's smart I think it's entertaining.
I think it's Inventive it is magical at times and at the same time it takes it pulls the face back literally at times on Quick relationship and in the way of society now is a now now Instagram world You meet somebody at a party you go home with them You have a one-night stand that turns into a four-day weekend. That's like holy what am I doing with this? This is dumb and it's we do that right now is where we are and it just pulls it back in a magical again inventive way And I just are fell in love with the film and I love that our audiences fell in love with the film And they spent after the film was over they had with the directors hung out with these high school kids And they just were just saying yes, we understand this and that that for me That next generation that's the most that's important and that was very Satisfying to have those kids talking to filmmakers afterwards So I'm very happy for the relationship and I'm very and just strong lineup overall And I'm very excited like that.
I'm I'm actually gonna get to see bomb city because I've missed both of the screenings And it's gonna screen they they were just here telling us about Sunday after new afternoon And I am going to do everything within my power and move heaven and earth if I have to To get here for that film. I'm also looking forward to patty cakes on Sunday night. Oh, man Linda go see patty cakes If you come back there, it's Sunday night.
It's Sunday night at eight eight eight fifteen eight fifteen It is the I called it. It's the White girl eight mile out of Jersey And it got picked up for distribution in July the second biggest sale at Sundance is here ten and a half million dollars on a one million dollar budget Everyone got bought for ten million dollars. It's in the lead actress.
Uh the place patty donbrowski never was a rapper She learned it for the movie Yeah, and as you see it you're gonna freak out like how'd you ever just learn to do this This is dumb. She's so good. It is a very entertaining movie.
We also have to promise this weekend too. Yes. Oh, so you love this We have I gotta I gotta throw this up.
We have this movie step I got plans to see that's two o'clock on Sunday, right? Boy, we're gonna have a step team come out and do a dance either before or after I don't know What you want to do before after I got that got picked up for distribution, too Frog searchlight. Yeah again.
So yeah, so I think I'm gonna do it before Because people don't know what a step they don't know what's a step show. They don't know what step show is I don't know any of that stuff. I could I used to go to didn't do you and T to see the step shows up there Yeah, so yeah And another I hope it was a capa another Award winner that I if it doesn't get why distribution I may cry like a child because I almost did during the film Was Quest.
Oh Quest is great. Quest was amazing. It's a great film.
Actually, I actually called kev. I saw kev the next take his Kevin I worked together and I said dude. I don't care what you have to do Find a way to see this film and he just looked at me.
I'm like trust me. Yeah It he vs an independent lens. Absolutely killed it.
It's a great film when you go in the filmmakers going in to make one film And something happens and a another film it's it's one of those magical meant-to-be things And so Quest was that film when I heard about it. Oh, it's cool. Oh, what happens?
Yeah, that like we've talked all night about The turn it takes in the middle because I don't want to ruin it for people. No, don't don't Like I physically had to catch my breath And it's one of those those films you're going to hear about later kind of like life animated was last year And tower was last. I finally got to see tower a couple of weeks ago Towers on Netflix absolutely.
I actually I caught it on pbs. Oh, well, they showed it on independent lens. Absolutely blew me away Oh, what else do you guys have coming up?
Anything that's going to tie into the dead and black film festival That's coming up because we want to let you guys go enjoy the party. Yeah. Well, you know, I don't know We're planning for 2018.
We've got we do submissions and visitational films So we're out always looking for what's really good. What's out there and hoping that filmmakers will submit their work to us and You know, it's a process And before we let you go give everybody your social media websites and everything because we're all about shameless self promotion It's didn't BFF dot com Didn't best friend forever dot com you can't forget it and it's gonna be like us on Facebook. It's the didn't like film festival And it's coming up next January, so you got plenty of time to plan it to be there You got it and it's gonna be a lot going on.
Thank you so much. Go enjoy the party. Thank you Mr.

No, I'm not sure if I'm gonna get there or not, but Sarah already went apparently and I'm excited about that, but Yeah, I don't think I'm gonna do it what I mean if I do it without sunshine, what are you talking about? I mean, I might do hello cool Jay rock the bells.
Oh I'm good with that or my voice lens more towards a look at that beer Stella my voice lens more towards Billy, I don't nice so no one does cry in his day in dev is dev singing and we talked about it the other night because you knew Billy I don't know maybe I mean you can't be predicted.
