I like superhero movies not afraid to say it. Tyler Roll. But I'm not alone for this particular episode
because I very rarely ever am. Joining me next to across the desk and kind of just around the corner
from me is my broadcast partner and a man who is making me very envious of his t-shirt today.
He is Chad. Is there such a thing as t-shirt envy? There is now. Just saying.
See the next him is the official fact checker of this show and a man who does not wear star-spangled
tights and we're happy for that. You may know him is fond on go but his mom and him
don't afford. I'm going to call him Don Ford. Welcome sir. I learned it's a last so not a last
soon. And we greatly appreciate you learning that. Everybody get, is everybody in Don on
to both channels? Yep. Yep. Okay. I think my headphones are getting moody.
And normally that's where we would stop. But we're going to go one step further as we go
clockwise around the desk. Joining us for the second time ever and the second time this year
is one of our favorite people. She's a friend of the show and there's a specific reason she's here
besides the fact that she requested specifically to do this episode because she will be very
invaluable to the conversation we're about to have. She is Jen Roan. Welcome my friend.
Good day all. Did I get you the right one? Talk right in. I talked in right into it.
There you go. Okay. Yeah. I just couldn't hear you. All right. So whenever we do one of these things
it is to review something. This is this one is no different. Although it is a little different
because normally when we do a review it is for something that we've been to a screening of.
This is a movie that everybody around this table actually went on their own to see and we've all
gathered what you're probably going like Rob. Why is this coming out now because the movie's
already out? Well this one we had to wait for the movie to come out so we could all go see it and then we
could review it together. Was there a breath in there anyway? I am a little long-winded because
a patty Jenkins who you might remember as the director of monster which got Charlize Thieron
depending on who you pronounce it anyway you want that's what I'm rolling with. Got her an Oscar.
Patty Jenkins ventures almost into her second time but officially her first time because
remember patty Jenkins all was at one point attached to Thore Ragnaride. Yes. So she is now the
official director because it's done for Wonder Woman. A movie that I think an entire generation of
people I would even venture to say two generations of people easily have been waiting to see.
We've already been introduced to the character. Yeah but four starts a whole thing. Uh-huh.
We're going to thank somebody because that's a tradition. Okay. I want to thank Kelly Kitchen's
for the hookup and she did hook you up and we know how much we love Kelly. Yeah we love Kelly
so I will put that in. So that I want to thank Kelly for the hookup for me and for faith.
I actually went and it's kind of interesting because the three all you and Jen kind of got to see
it in the same type of arena. You were a family with our friends at the Alamo. Chad went to the Angelica.
I saw it in the Dolby cinema at North Park. So we've kind of got three different ways of looking
it and actually technically four because the two of you went to different Alamo locations.
Don when you went to Cedars. Richardson. Oh so you did go to Richardson. So both of you are
I thought for somebody something that you would to see to Cedars. I wasn't paid or four. Okay so you
guys were both at. Okay so two different houses within the same place. This has been one of those
things that's been a long time coming and and I for one I'm kind of glad that that how you
would took its time. Yes. Because to approach a character like Wonder Woman you really it had to be
done correctly. Yes. Because you can do this badly and it was almost done badly on a couple of
different occasions. We've seen the bad previews, the bad possible shows, suggestions that didn't
make thankfully. But this one makes it all the way to the screen. It's two hours in 21 minutes.
So be aware of that going in. I'm going to say first of all and this is kind of a non-sector but it's
kind of not DC up their game with their intro. Oh that DC comics into what the heck just happened to my
okay that's a bad thing. My laptop just decided you know what we're going to shut down now.
All right why not I'll just do this off the cuff then. Which I love that new DC comics intro. Big fan.
That being said. Well and jump back a little. You mentioned that we all bought our own tickets
going into this movie. I bought my ticket for myself and I took my dad. You did take your father.
As an early father's day gift because he raised me that I could earn my own money at a job and I could
buy things with the money I earned and it kind of goes to the point of Wonder Woman and some of the
under themes. Talk clean into that thing. Some of the end of the games that have been in the
public I lately but I'd like to point out that as a female I bought my own ticket and my dad used to
get all right. I had very high expectations going into this thing. What now now my now my
gone. Anybody hear me? Yeah. Okay you can hear me fine. I can't hear me. Check. Can you check my
connection and the thing there we go. All right was that it was okay was the plug just on the way
in. I just barely talked. It feels better now. I have very high expectations going into this thing.
They were not met. I'm not afraid to say it. And let me explain why.
The first half of this is incredibly slow. Incredibly slow. Like to the point of
I knew when to go pee because there was nothing going on. The second half picks up.
But then to me your climax of this film wasn't what I wanted it to be because we had to be
really really careful in this review because we do say spoiler free on this show.
And because of that there are certain things that we can talk about, there are certain things we can't
talk about. All I'm willing to say is when you get to the climax of the film I was disappointed
on how it unfolded itself before you got to the resolution. Now I want to go to my point
is I agree with you 100 percent on that. Now I'm not talking about the first part of the film.
Okay. I thought the first part of the film was showing her as an Amazon. That was a trick. Yeah.
I enjoyed that. Yes. Yes. I thought that was very good. And that was a very good start. So I was really into this.
My big beef is that from that point on the point going to England and all that stuff there,
you do not see Wonder Woman, you do not see any action until probably about the 60 percent
way through Mark. Then you finally see Wonder Woman and it's already through halfway through the film.
You don't know when you see her in the costume and everything. It's being Wonder Woman.
Yeah. Don't you see that battle scene, the war on the battle scene? I see what you're doing.
That's what you really find interesting in her as Wonder Woman. But that's clear about the 60
percent mark of the film. Right. So that first the Amazon part was great. Put them between that
in that battle scene. It's oh. Yeah. And I think that's I think Jen's got to put too much into it.
There was just a true, they tried to combine the origin story with the first adventure,
which is a bold decision to make. But it did almost collapse under its own weight. And I mean,
it's 93 percent currently on Rotten Tomatoes, which is interesting because if you look at
its entry on the internet movie database, the meta score, which works in user score as well,
is a 73. Wow. Yeah. I mean, I wouldn't give it a fresh on the Rotten Tomatoes, but
like you're saying that that part of the film, they spent too much of that build-up trying to
build the story, just like they did in Batman versus Superman and BVS. See. I don't know,
it's an argument I'm going to. Yeah. Yeah. I think that you could say that. But after that point,
the rest of the film was great. But if you want action, I'm just going to warn you,
you're not going to see it. You're not going to get a ton of action. You're going to get
at the beginning. There's a little battle scene. Then about the 6th or 7th. But then at the end.
But there's only three battle scenes in two hours and 20 minutes. So if you want action,
this is not your film. I'm going to warn you. But she's not necessarily about action and
our battle. She's about being better. I understand that. And I think for more of Dawn's coming
for the last, that's what she was saying. Oh, my love. Let me see if I'm hearing you correctly.
Because what I'm hearing from you is the way this thing is pitched in trailers. It's not necessarily
what you get in the theater. Is that where you're going? Yes. You know, Jen tends to avoid trailers
for the most part. So she's only got one thing from reference because she saw it in conjunction with
something else. Well, as the other three of us are more trailer-centric. And Chad, would you say
that you would agree at that point that what you get in the trailers, not necessarily the full
picture of what you're going to get in the film? You can say that on about almost any trailer
for any film you've seen in the last 25 to 30 years. That's fair. But I think that this is a
little bit ahead of the curve in that category. I don't think so. I don't think so because if you
if you think back, you go back to Dawnner's 78 Superman, which has a couple of nods to that in this
film that Jen, I were talking about before y'all got to go. How long did we go before we saw Chris
Reeve and Types? It was as wide as that. When we saw Batman begins, how long did we go before he
got up in Falco's face? I'm Batman. But with with begins, I expected that. Well, and then by the
same token, how long did we go in Man of Steel before we saw Caval? And Types. But I was okay with
that because of the way they were telling the story. But you see her. I don't hear anything. But my
thing is, I agree with Dawn on the fact that it took us too long to get there. There could have been
about a 20 minute span between them leaving them ascira and her climbing that ladder, as you see
in the trailer, that probably could have been trimmed. And I agree with that 100%. That's my issue.
There's to me in that whole section. And Jen, I kind of want to pose this question to you
because your appreciation for Wonder Woman is a kind of on a different level than ours. It is. It is.
I kind of felt the whole. She's a woman and she's not really accepted in a Man's world.
It kind of got shoved down our throats a little bit. And I felt they could have cut back a little bit
on that. How did you feel about that? I was really pleased that it was finally out there like that.
Okay. There tends to be a, and if you follow the comic strip and the history behind it,
she originally started out as a strong powerful woman. And then they had to turn her back into
damsel and distress. And then they built her back up. And then they've knocked her back down.
It's this constant battle that as a female, I've seen, I've lived. I've heard other stories of,
you know, yeah, I mean, my dad raised me. You can be Wonder Woman if you want to. All you have to do is
apply yourself. Okay. Not necessarily realistic, but he honestly believed I could become anything
I wanted. Then I turn around and get in the workforce. And I've had the male boss. He thought
my skirt needed to be shorter, tighter, shirt, lower cut, show off some boob. And we're going to
let you get promoted, but we're not going to expect you to do any work. It's a very different,
it's a different struggle than until you've actually been part of it. It's hard to understand.
So it was really nice to see like there's some points where she's trying on clothing. And you see
what happens and that you can't necessarily move in some of the clothing of the time here. Okay.
And it's realistic. We have that today. I mean, I'm glad I get to wear pants and jeans to work.
There's companies out there that still require their women to wear skirts, and at least an inch
or a taller heel to work every day, whereas their men can wear flats. I just, I felt like they
missed that they established it well, but I think they established it almost to the point of
overkill, especially by the time we got to the scene where she walked in with him to the
parliament meeting. That was overkill for me, because I was like, yes, we've established this.
I don't know that we needed that part of it. They needed something to do with that scene,
which we'll discuss off show. Sure. But I don't know that they needed to do the scene that way.
agree. I just, I mean, that's where it's something. Yeah, and that's where it's kind of
ways down itself. I did like the whole her trying to carry this sword while dressed in the
local garb where she was just like, look, this is what I do. That's just how we do things
where I am trying to get through the body and go. I want to make a point, which is also a nod,
something else. That's your nod. And I want to make a point where I said, if you want to
tension action, this is not your film. And I'm not saying that's a bad thing, that there's not a
ton of action. There is. But I just thought that, you know, if you want that, this is not your film,
I'll get a warning. If I'm not going to tell you not the Avengers. Yeah, that's not the Avengers.
Yeah, so that's not what justice we will be. But doesn't need the all the way through, but no,
that even that Parliament scene could have been cut out. You know, well, well, we'll talk about that.
There's, there's also a lot more emotion going on in this film than I've seen in any
Superhero. I mean, it hit hit hit the heartstrings in different ways. Agreed. And I think that was
really powerful, especially with where the world is right now. I think we needed to see
some of that, not necessarily all of it, but some of it needed to be re-grounded and re-established.
And let's put it out there. She's amazing. She really is. She is perfect in the role.
Now, I've only, I got one question to you, since you follow this, did she come to out of her
whole way and let's call it? Does she? During World War One in the, in the comics,
is this following the comment? That depends on which telling you're looking at it. It was the TV show.
Okay. Sorry. That's Steve Trevor. It's, it's Steve Trevor, and then it's his great great
grandson when they jumped the TV show to the 70s edition. Okay. So it does follow some of that.
But it was World War Two in the TV show, not World War One. But here, here's my only issue with
the whole, let's, let's finish this, let's finish this point. And let's talk about that for a minute.
Do you know why they didn't do World War Two? Absolutely. I do. Because, and it's because
Marvel kind of cornered that with Captain America. Yeah. So that's why, and I was listening to
Fatman on Batman, because they did spoiler. So if you're going to listen to that episode and see
the film first. But they talk about how actually putting Wonder Woman in World War One
is actually smarter for the telling of the story. Yeah. It's a really interesting discussion
that Kevin Smith and Mark Bernardin have. I watched it. About, you watch, oh, you probably
used to the YouTube? Yeah. Okay. I'll, I'll get the podcast. I just want to have to check that one out.
Yeah. And when they make their points about how putting this story in World War One versus World
War Two, it's absolutely brilliant. Yeah. If this is the motivation, if this, and of course,
he says, oh, yeah, that we totally meant that. If that's the thing, it's perfect to put
her in World War One because of what it becomes. Because, yeah, because then now she owns that.
Now, I thought she was incredible except for one thing. What's that?
Her accent. Because every Wonder Woman I grew up with, she did not have that European accent,
but it makes sense to me. Yeah. I'm just saying that it's different. You're right. You're just
good. Even if you put the cartoon, what every cartoon, what would you like to have to
remember, we grew up in a time where everything was very Anglo, right? Everything. So to be
able to give her, and especially when you look at them as scary, and we talked about this earlier,
the diversity within them as scary. I thought was a genius stroke, too. Because not only are you
saying, you can be Wonder Woman as a young lady, but as any kind of young lady, you can be Wonder
Woman. Because all of the, all of the Amazon's were all of different races, different creeds,
I love the diversity within that is here. I thought that was a genius stroke. Actually,
an article out there about the athletes, these women really are. You've got American CrossFit
champ, boxing champs, Swedish professional fighter, Princess Bride. Yeah, you will, yeah,
you've got, you've got Princess Bride. And even Supermodel, but it was really amazing how they
did the casting that it wasn't just Anglo-American in the cast. And it, I didn't think I was going
to like the accent. That was one of the things that was holding me back and going into the
and I ended up once I heard the story and realized the environment raised in and the history
behind where she came from, it actually fit. Yeah, I thought, I thought the way they told me,
here, here's the issue, it's quite documented. I don't have the Greek creeds. That is true,
that is not the first to say. And I go in this kind of the mainstream person who doesn't, the
every man, this time literally is Greek creeds. So I mean, well, plates are, well, but you know,
it's, I'm kind of going in as the mainstream person who doesn't, you're watching it as a kid,
watching the cartoon of the, you know, Justice League as a part of the super friend. Yeah,
all that stuff. I like that a little super friend. Yeah, so I'm going to not know when all this,
you know, you've got to also do these films not only for the peer lines, but also for the
non-Greek creeds. And I think sometimes, you know, when you go looking to the non-Greek creed point
of view, you might get different kind of views on this and does this work for this and this. So
I think it's a tough balance to make the hardcore fans happy, but also get the mainstream
group into this. But I thought this was, this was a good balance for that, though, especially
with Justice League coming. I think the positive to this for me is that it's a really good
prelude to work its way into Justice League. And I'm now excited about Justice League,
which I couldn't care too, flips before now. Oh, I've been, I've ready for Justice League.
Oh, I'm already for Justice League. See, to me, it always bomb. The fact that it comes out
two weeks after Ragnarok, that's going to be an interesting month of November, but I just, I don't
know, it didn't live up. I enjoyed it, but it didn't live up to my expectations for it. And
maybe I set the bar to high. I don't know. I would not turn someone away from this film
because it's the closest we've gotten so far. And I enjoyed myself. I just felt like it, especially
the first half felt really long. Now, here, go ahead. I was going to say there's, there's one point
in the start where it's a scene with, of course, the Steve Trevor character. And he gets kind of
cheesy and kind of camping. And I'm like, please tell me that didn't go with the show. He pulls back
away from it. And I actually like the rest of the, all the actors and actresses and then we
beat it a wonderful job. I'm a big fan of the pine. It's just the one scene that I didn't care for.
He went over cheese. Yeah, he did. And a scene where he's being interrogated in the beginning.
And really the golden lasso is involved. Lasso is reaction to the golden lasso. He was a little
can't be with it. And other than that. And I can see where she could say to the movie and how it was
going to be. When you talk about things that maybe pulled me out a little bit,
why did Trevor have to work for British intelligence when he has a very, very thick American accent?
That was a little weird for me. Why couldn't he just work with the Americans? I thought he was going to
make it on loan to British. Yeah. And also in the parts in Germany, like in that base where he
you first meet that doctor and all that. Why weren't they speaking in German? Why are they all
speaking in English? Without the sub, I think they did it for the sub. To see if he was a spy case for
a younger kid. Yeah. To make them read the subtitles. I could see where that would benefit you,
but I can see why they didn't. Because I mean, think about it. You could say the same thing
in Captain America. Yeah. Where why didn't the red skull speak German? It's because if you're trying
to bring kids in, you will lose a young person's attention span. If you're making them do a lot of
subtitles. All right. I understand. And I will also say on that aspect of children in,
if you're okay with your children seeing battles and fighting, some people are some people aren't,
this is actually a good movie. It is a family friendly from all other fronts. Yeah. And it's not,
it's not as violent as it could be. Yeah. I mean, there's there's killing, but there's not over
the top graphic killing. Right. There's not blood and guts and gore. Yeah. If I have one thing though,
that I think you talked about just to sleep coming out and all that. And we might set stuff on this
before, but I'm going to bring it up as the non-greed guy here. Please do. Is I think, yes, they
have some creativity because they're doing these movies. D.C. is not all this stuff. Okay. But when I think
of the Wonder Woman outfit, I think of the blue trunks with the stars, the red, the gold. When I
think of Aquaman, I think of the blonde guy with the green and orange outfit. Well, don't get ready
for that. But you know what I'm saying? I understand creativity, but okay, if they're going to
do it like what they do with Aquaman who looks totally different from the Aquaman we know,
why don't we put Superman in a pink two-two in the green for such a time? Let's let's let's back it up
a little bit. Hold on, let's back it up a little bit. From a non-geet cred standpoint, yeah, I see where
you're going. Yeah. But if you do a little bit of research, you're Aquaman right now, that's your
Aquaman in the comics, the original. No, no, the one you're seeing in Justice Lee. Okay, that's the
persona he has currently taken on because if they realized, is Aquaman kind of became the laughing
stock of the JLA at one point. So they've kind of machoed him up. So that's why this version that
Momo was going to be playing a Aquaman, that there was no shock value there for me, because I'm like,
this is the Aquaman that I prefer. Yeah, I don't like him with the orange and the green,
because I put things on his face. Because I put my red and be a WWE WWE that's called that
podcast.com. That is our website. Thank you. That, you know, I brought up that issue of the, the how they
are kind of changing like the outfits and changing the creativity in in some like that. I was
other one of them was a blue one in some aspects. Yeah, some aspects. Yeah, one of them has changed over
the years. I mean originally, she had a skirt. Yeah. Instead of, and then she's gone to shorts, and then
if you watched the TV show, she had her diving outfit, which also, and then her skateboarding outfit
with the pads and the helmet, and she had different outfits. I like this version. Yeah. But this,
it was more of armor than it is anything else. Well, and it fits with what was seen on the mascara.
Yeah, I'm okay with it. I mean, her, her look has evolved over time because it was necessary,
and I think that's what they're doing with all these DCs. Yeah, but my thing I always remembered is
the blue with the stars, and I did not see that. But because you were going to, because this is
this version of her. And that was very much an Americanized version of Wonder Woman. Whereas
now she's a more all world. A universal hook. Yeah. Yeah. Not just the United States. She belongs to everybody.
Yeah. All right. Anything else you want to say before we get to the final analysis?
I love Wonder Woman. All right. Well, let's get to it. Then the way we do the final analysis on the
show, we're not going to give you thumbs up, thumbs down. We're literally not going to give you stars.
We're going to ask two questions. Question number one is, would you see this film again? If the
answer is no, we're done here. But if the answer is yes, our follow-up question becomes, how far
are you willing to go to see it again? Now our spectrum from best to worst of the best is first run
at the theater, Twilight, Matt and A, early morning on a weekend, second run at the dollar theater,
actually leaving your house to see it on Netflix. I'm right box staying home to screaming on Netflix
or watch it on cable. Chat, let's start with you. Would you see this film again? Absolutely. How far
are you willing to go? Don't be, don't be, don't be admiss, which is now Dolby cinema. Don't be,
whatever, the best premium moment of course. I love this film. I loved everything about it.
All right, Dom, do you see this again? Oh yeah, how far are you willing to go? I did really like it.
All right, my agree with that little drag partner in stuff like that. So I'm still getting you in
Matt, Nate. Okay. Yeah. Jim, do you see this again? Yes. How far are you willing to go?
I will actually go full price, which is not normal for even a maybe I haven't seen yet. Would you take
it next level and say I'm X3D or just regular? Because they are showing this and I'm X3D in
some place. I do that too. I actually would love to go. I'm X3D and I'm not a big 3D person.
I would see this again, but I'm not going that big with it. I wasn't pretty good because
and I'm going to, I'm going to use a ranking that we don't use very often that we don't even
pull on the spectrum normally. I would rather I will buy this on Blu-ray. I will do that. That will
happen. That will be probably not enough to see it for the first time. See it in a theater
just like almost 101 million dollars worth did this weekend. By the way, I've already checked
the box office receipts. Yeah, I'm just I'm looking at 11 million Thursday night alone. I will the next
time I watch this will probably be on Blu-ray. Because I would love to watch it in my home theater
now that it's finally put back together in my living room. So I can sit there, especially on those
parts where it kind of drags that I can maybe just run to the kitchen and grab something to eat
or whatever. It's just that first half of it just moves so slowly for me. Outside of that beach scene,
which doing a battle scene like that in broad daylight, it's not something that gets done much
in the morning. It was great. I was a big fan. How was it with that enhanced? Was it worth it?
Do you think how you saw it? Oh, in the Dolby cinema? Yeah, absolutely. Having the rumbling and the
seeds and being able to recline now it's a lady in the third row would have turned off her phone.
That would have been great. That's why I went to the Alamo. Alamo. But if I get back out,
fake killer catchins for the hookup, fake killer. We love you. It is director, Patty Jenkins,
and it is the brand new film, bringing Wonder Woman to the silver screen as we march towards
Justice League in November. Let us go and do the plugs.
