What ever we do one of these, it is to review something.
This one is no exception.
The 160 first.
One of these as we make that climb to the next milestone.
What we're reviewing today is the latest film from director Paul McGeagan.
Boy, I hope I even got that right.
This is the guy that you remember.
Push a few years ago.
Yes.
He, this is the guy that directed that.
Okay.
He directs a brand new film called Victor Frankenstein with James McAvoy.
And Daniel Radcliffe.
Before we begin.
Sir, first off, that's Harry Potter.
And Professor X.
Okay, but we have to thank Josh and our best friends.
Oh, Tonya had us out.
Tonya hosted this particular screen of course as well.
She hosted it for me.
Yeah.
We got to think Tonya and Josh for the invite.
And everybody our best friend to that life for inviting us.
We love them so much.
Yes, we do our best friend.
And I actually got to see this.
When you boys were off at another screening.
We had to divide and conquer.
We did it for the Empire.
Absolutely.
I want to make sure we get as many of these things covered for the Empire.
As the title suggests, it is the story of Frankenstein's monster that we all know.
But this has a little bit different of a spin on it.
Whereas this is told from Igor's point of view.
Interesting.
And what we find out in this film in the very beginning.
Because this isn't even going to spoil anything.
That's not his name.
Igor's not his name.
He doesn't have one in the beginning of the film.
This takes place in London where he is a hunchback and a clown in a traveling circus.
But he's highly, highly intelligent.
And he turns out to be the de facto physician for most of the circus employees.
Although he still looked down on and kicked around a lot and picked on.
And at one point he's even locked in a cage.
Well, Victor Frankenstein just happens to be at the circus.
And sees through an accident, sees how intelligent he is.
And besides he's going to break him out of the circus and take him under his wing.
And what Igor who becomes Igor finds out as this goes along is that he is working with bringing dead tissue back to life.
Also involved.
There we go.
You're welcome, Internet.
Is a former trapeze artist at the circus named Laura Lai, who's played by Jessica Brown thinly.
Does that name mean anything to you, sir?
Hmm, should it?
Um, it's not ringing any bells.
She's on a, uh, kind of, I don't know if it's a really well known series called Downton Abbey.
Oh, I don't watch Downton Abbey.
I thought she did.
No, that's true.
My wife.
I don't why wife does, but I thought you and your wife watched it.
No.
And at one point Igor really becomes, it becomes a point where Igor has to make a choice.
Between this man that has made him who he is.
And becoming a fugitive on the run.
Because things get a little wonky.
Or if he just wants to be his own man.
So this is more about Igor more than anything in this film you would say.
It's, it's told from Igor's point of view.
Okay.
But I, I wouldn't say that this is Igor's deal.
It's, it's definitely, like, mostly his story.
Okay.
So let's get into the plot.
How, what did you think about the plot?
When was the first time we look at the watch?
Let me, let me start with this.
There's also the guy that plays the inspector that's after them in this.
Guy by the name Andrew Scott.
Does that mean anything to you?
That definitely rings a bell.
Play C inspector?
Really?
Yes, sir.
Okay.
Yes, sir.
This film is an hour and 49 minutes long.
And about in the first 10 to 15 minutes I was kind of like,
how are we going to spend this much time on this story?
I looked up.
I looked back down.
We were 15 minutes in.
Oh, that's how.
This script moves quickly.
But not so fast to where you go.
Dude, slowly roll.
Like, it moves fast, but it's perfectly past.
Because you think to yourself, man,
I don't know if there's enough story here to fill the better part of two hours.
And it moves beautifully.
I love films like that.
It's just enough of the classic story that they don't beat you over the head with the story
like of Mary Shelley's novel.
But there's enough artistic license taken that you don't go to.
Really?
It's familiar, but it's not.
It's familiar enough if it makes any sense.
It makes perfect sense, actually.
And it's kind of like we talked about the first 80% of fantastic four.
We're like, I'm on board.
You're taking liberties, but I'm cool with it.
That was the entire film here.
There were enough liberties taken that it didn't detract from the source material.
Good.
That's the one thing I would fear on something like this that they just, they get so far off track
that they're on a different track altogether at this point.
And it's just so well told and it works on multiple levels.
It works as one man's story.
It works as the story of Dr. Frankenstein.
I will tell you that the Frankenstein's monster part of it is very minimalized.
I'm actually good with that.
Because we are men of a certain age, I think we can all admit that in this room.
But when you hear the furry lease and you think of the original 1931 version,
how that's more about the monster, this is more about the man and his partner.
Slash a system.
So is it closer to Brandox version, you think?
A little bit.
Okay.
Because I don't think any of us saw that.
Because I know what I think the monster, I think De Niro.
But that's a whole different issue.
But I will tell you this.
And this is a minor spoiler.
So be prepared for that in three, two, don't say the one.
Someone does refer to him as Frankenstein.
Stop it.
I swear to you.
That happens.
And Furned the show Lonnie Hart was with us.
And we with me anyway.
And we both looked each other and just gave that knowing nod.
So.
And he goes Frankenstein.
So that kind of made me happy.
So speaking of that, let's go into the acting.
Flawless.
Flawless on every level.
You would swear that McEvoy and Radcliffe had been hanging out together for years.
There is such a comfort level between them.
And I will say this as far as the film goes.
Gore is at a minimum here.
I will say that's good.
They let it rely more.
Oh, that's not the right version of that.
I'll just have to let it play out.
Um.
It's done more when it like when it has to be.
That makes any sense.
It's not done for the say because we how many films have we seen in the last couple of years,
where they've thrown visuals at us to cover up like blemishes in the story.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Become style over substance.
Yeah.
This was where it was used to to further the story itself, which I was really impressed with.
It's it's one of those things that where you go.
Oh, okay.
This is okay.
There's a couple of times where I kind of had to close my eyes because you know how I am with needles.
Yeah.
There's a couple of needle sequences that I haven't changed.
Are you climbing up your chair?
I did not enjoy.
But.
But it wasn't one of these.
We did it because we could.
We did it because it was part of the story.
Yeah.
They did it to enhance the story not become the story.
Agreed.
Yeah.
Agreed.
Absolutely.
I've got to have a question though about this film.
Why is it coming out in November?
I was going to ask because Lonnie and I talked about this a lot after the film.
I was hoping he could join us tonight, but he has a family or whatever.
It's kids.
Whatever.
He knows I love him.
Uh.
What was it going to compete against this year?
Crimson Peak, which made like a dollar 50.
Yeah.
Like this movie is this is a quality.
The film that you could release for Halloween and it's PG 13.
So you could have gotten the kids in for it.
The ones that didn't want to do goosebumps or didn't want to do hotel
Transylvania.
That's about it.
You got that audience locked down.
But.
But here's my question.
Yes.
Is this film Oscar bait?
If it is, that's no.
No.
I never saw that because it's not one of those.
I will create a monster.
Kind of a thing.
It was just.
It's just kind of there.
Do that again.
As you described it.
It sounded like that's kind of what you were saying.
Like the script as well.
The core was done to everything was acting.
This would have been a perfect Halloween release to me.
And I don't know.
I haven't done enough digging to see if there was a reason for that.
But.
Let me check.
I just.
Now you got me.
It worked.
It worked.
It worked.
So well as a Halloween release because again, PG 13.
There's only.
There's a little bit of language in it.
That's, I mean, and then there's the, the, the, the, where the core theatrical,
theatrical, gore or whatever elements.
The cinematic elements.
There you go.
Well, plates are.
And I was just, you know, this could have been easily a Halloween release.
And it would have worked for me.
That was my only thing because I really, really, again, I can't say I loved it.
But I really, really liked it.
But I think they're probably Oscar baiting this.
That's probably why.
I, but I disagree with you.
But you say it's so perfect.
That's probably they're thinking the same thing.
Yeah.
But, but what's the difference between releasing it in mid October and the week,
with the week of fake difference about if you're really going to Oscar bait it.
And you're going to release it in December.
November is on beginning the unofficial beginning.
Or round things mid November is the unofficial.
Yeah.
But Bridges, Bridges Spies was in October release.
I know.
This film.
What I'm going to say.
Well, I'm going to say.
Just film was supposed to come out a year ago.
Okay.
This film was the original release date was pushed back from October 17th of 2014 to
January of this year.
And then it got pushed again to October 2nd of this year.
And then for whatever reason.
It got pushed again.
Do they say why though?
I'm, I'm still trying to figure out that it got pushed from.
I'm talking about.
I'm glad they pulled it out of a January release.
Yeah.
As we know, January tends to be the time of year where the studios are dumping a lot of their stuff that they
wouldn't have thought have done well.
Was it what January, what again?
From.
It was early October of last year.
Maybe October of last year.
Maybe October last year.
Maybe October last year.
Okay.
And then March.
They bumped it to October 2nd.
And then they bumped it again.
And if there were any words about who it was going to, who it was going to appeal to, they
shouldn't have had to because I think this would have worked really, really well.
My only, I mean, if I've got to have a criticism of the film that made me not love it.
Because it's just, I'm just not that guy when it comes to films like this.
Is that make any sense?
Yeah.
Like, I've really, really liked this film.
I can't say, you know, it's not going to make my top 10 of the year.
But it's not going to make my bottom 10 of the year by any stretch of the album.
Okay.
One thing that I was the look in historic gorgeous.
It absolutely gorgeous.
It absolutely gorgeous.
Chad, Chad, Chad, had a, had a, I saw him on this thing.
Yes.
Max Landis.
Max Landis wrote this.
Who also did World War Z is doing the upcoming Pride and Prejudice in zombies.
And, and Andrew apparently just got an extra life on his phone.
Oh, Link just opened a tunnel.
But it's, it will every, I just caught you.
You're willing on the back.

I think we're all tired at this point.
It just, it works on every level.
Now, this movie's not going to be for everybody.
But I think it's good.
Like, if you're a parent and your teenagers like, I'm going to go see Victor Frankenstein.
You can go.
Okay.
No worries.
You know, it's not, it's not, you know, it's, it's not the door hall first.
It doesn't go out of its way to freak you out.
It's just, it's a story.
And it literally, the first line of the film is, you know the story.
Yeah.
Because Brad Cliff does narrate it as well.
See, the, the main thing I got in you and I talked about this in the way home.
From our respective screenings with it.
Every time I saw a trailer for this,
I got the Guy Richie Sherlock Holmes vibe off.
And there is a bit of a Sherlock Holmes the element to it.
Because it also focuses on the inspector that's after Frankenstein.
Because he feels what he's doing is an abomination.
Mm-hmm.
He basically says it one point.
This man is in league with Satan.
And I have to stop him.
Oh, geez.
And that's the guy that plays C in Inspector.
Okay.
I got you.
And it's really, it's just so well done.
I don't, I think you would really dig this.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I really, I really think you enjoyed this personally.
But just, you know, we had it.
Right.
Oh, we had it.
It's, it's really Empire.
That's how we were all.
Totally.
Yeah.
But again, I can't say anything horrible about this film.
It's just not your company.
It's not, it's not what it is.
But you're, but as the objective reviewer.
Sure.
Yeah.
It this is the genre that you're into.
Yeah.
You're going to love it.
You're going to really, I want to say you love it.
But you'll really, really enjoy it.
It's just, it's a different take.
On the story, you know.
And I, I like it when people can do that successfully.
And not just for the sake of whatever.
So, I mean, that being said, since I'm the only person that can really do the final analysis on this film,
although I appreciate the three of you gentlemen being here because otherwise this turns into a solo adventure,
and none of us want that.
No.
Thank you for your confidence.
But, I'm not just saying it.
I wouldn't want to do it.
I'm just saying, I wouldn't want to do it.
You can do it.
You've done this so much.
Just saying it.
Only one time.
But it's better.
Yeah.
It's better when we have all of us in the room.
Yeah.
It's not that we don't have every faith in you.
I wouldn't want to be in that position.
The way we do the final analysis on this show.
I'm not going to give you thumbs up thumbs down.
I'm not going to give you out letter grade.
I'm not going to give you stars.
I'm not going to give you ranking one to ten.
It's simple.
Two questions.
Question number one.
Is what I see this film again?
I'm going to go ahead and answer it.

Will you see this film again?
Yes.
We now go to the deeper question of how far am I willing to go to see it?
What I see it in full price first run.
What I see it.
Twilight, Matt and A.
Early morning on a weekend.
Second run to dollar theater.
Rental for red box.
Stream it from Netflix.
Watch it on cable.

I don't know that it's actually going to happen.
This would be fun in 3D.
But I don't know that it's getting a 3D release.
And not from what I'm seeing on Wikipedia.

It was a little bit of a chill in the air.
Go see it at a Twilight show.
Twilight.
Okay.
Because you're paying a little less than full price.
It's good to see in a theater.
The sound field was amazing in this.
And we saw it in a very just a basic B-flat theater from our friends at the Angelica.
It wasn't ETX.
It wasn't anything fancy.
It was just your basic digital theater.
And it sounded amazing as well.
But go check it out, man.
It's a lot of fun.
You know what?
Would really light my fire on seeing a film like this?
You know what?
I'm on board with that.
I think this would be a great drive and feature to go check out.
