Greetings, Empire Member, and or Members.

At least once in your life you have checked out the Clubhouse Podcast.

Number 401
New set of downs, new set of season.
Welcome, my name is Rob, I am the executive producer of the Clubhouse Podcast.
And I've been deleted on social media, I am afraid to say it.
Moving on.
Sitting in the co-host chair is my co-host,
and a man who will neither confirm nor deny any knowledge of anything called the dark web.
He is Chad, welcome sir.
Absolutely not, that's a trail I don't want to go down.
Moving around the room is the official fact checker of this show.
And a man who has returned from vacation and is rip-roar and ready to go.
You may know him as fun, don't go, but his mom and even don't for it.
I'm gonna call him Don Ford, welcome sir.
Being a fantastic faith Ford had a great time.
You got absolutely from what I saw you did for sure.
Oh yeah, yeah.
Running out the days is the newest member of the cast.
And a man who enjoys technology just as much as the rest of us.
He is Alex, welcome sir.
I can actually confirm, I haven't unfriended anybody in this room despite evidence that I should.
Wow, I'm not gonna judge you hourly for that.
Whatever we do one of these, it is to review something this is no different.
Multiple time screenwriter.
This is the guy that wrote the grudge, the grudge to red,
Chainsaw, Texas Chainsaw, Massacre 3D,
and he's got three others that are in pre-production.
One of them looks like it might be a remake.
Creepers.
Really?
He is Steven Susco, and this is Unfriended Dark Web.
For sure it's so thin.
Yes sir.
I like Eric and our best friends.
And I like it in a great marketing.
Well some of our favorite people are our vendors.
They let us see movies early so that we can check them out and talk to you guys about them.
So you can spend your entertainment dollar wisely.
This is a sequel.
What was unfriended a couple of years ago?
Maybe last year I actually did see that one.
I saw the first one.
Yeah and this one I kept me because I just was literally getting off the plane when the screen was starting.
Right.
And you guys know I have a policy, I live by a code.
I don't.
I don't do scary movies.
I don't do them.
But Chad is a fan of the scary movie.
So he was happy to.
Was it been four years since I started?
2014.
Yeah.
So Chad is our backup for scary movies.
And sometimes you and Donald go see scary movies together.
I have no issue with that because I ain't going.
So nobody of note that I could see in this thing.
But I'll give you the official M.D.B.
Synopsis goes right much to it.
A team comes into possession of a new laptop and soon discovers that the previous owner is not only watching him,
but will do anything to get it back out.
Okay.
It does have the Betty Gabriel.
I mean she's been and get out and stuff.
She's been in a few years.
Oh.
She has kids in the game.
Like even the pictures I see on the M.D.B.
I'm like, nope.
So Chad let's dive right into this thing.
All right.
Is this a synopsis that we've got here good enough?
Well, it is a sequel in name only.
Not in storyline.
Not in narrative.
It has absolutely zero to do with the original film at all.
No callbacks or anything?
No.
Yeah.
Because it's not the original.
I was going to ask if it's like part two.
So it's just kind of the same bit with a different group of people.
Well, no, no, no.
Where are you just waiting for this?
It is not the same bit per se.
Whereas the first one dealt with a supernatural element.
They were basically being haunted by a girl that they went to school with.
This thing has nothing to do with haunting.
This thing, genuinely, you could tell it was shaking people up in the audience
because it was plausible.
Interesting.
And you know what I say to that?
No!
No!
This is one of those kinds of things.
Well, it will probably inspire you to change your login ID
and tighten up your credentials on different websites.
It gives you the impression that
none of your information is as secure as you think it is.
And it can and will.
But what if I know that none of my information is secure?
Well, I mean...
I already know that.
Like it's the internet.
To me, that was almost the most horrifying thing about this.
People were looking around like they were kind of really shaken.
It was strange.
I mean, there are identity theft protection places that are now telling you
hey, we can now do a triple scrub into the dark web.
And if those of you that don't know when we refer to the dark web,
this is areas of the internet that are not as socially acceptable as others,
if you will.
There is some shady moss-
The moss-
The moss-
The moss-
The moss-
The moss-
The moss-
The moss-
The moss-
The moss-
The moss-
The moss-
The moss-
The moss-
Well, would you say that it affected you since I think you're the most active on social media out of all of us?
Well, I mean, I guess.
I mean, I was like, you know, even Jules was accompanying me to this screen and she goes,
see, this is why I don't go on Facebook all day much anymore.
I mean, I don't know what kind of an agreement they've got with Zuckerberg,
because I mean, the Facebook usage was central to the...
I mean, it wasn't like Facebook-ish.
It was Facebook.
It wasn't like FaceTime.
It was FaceTime.
What have I seen?
Like, it was the...
My book.
Yeah, yeah.
Head Bible.
They were on Skype.
They were on Skype.
You know, and all of it...
It's all done in real time.
So, you know, from when it starts, it's like an episode of 24.
You're often running and you watch this thing unfold.
And it's quick.
It's less than 90...
I think it's like right at 88 minutes long.
And it goes.
It was filled in secret from what I'm seeing.
And from what I read, it's an hour 28.
Mm-hmm.
And from what I have read,
the trailer itself was released on the Dark Web.
On the Dark Web.
Why the director himself?
Well, originally called Unfriended Game Night.
I think there's another movie that may have blown the wheels off for that reason.
That's the reason why they're all getting together and meeting on Skype,
because they have game night,
and then this guy uncovers what he uncovers.
So you're saying it's people being punished for playing Farmville too much?
No.
Actually, no.
They're all meaning up on Skype to play cards against humanity.
It's a great game.
It's a great game.
Very much so on.
I very much enjoy that.
Yeah.
And as he delves into these files on this laptop that he's acquired,
he uncovers some very unsettling things.
And they like faces of fear unsettling worse.
Oh god.
I mean, it's really hard to discuss this.
Yeah.
It's hard to discuss this without getting anything away.
But just what it entails will really make you want to clear your browser history.
It's really disturbing.
Well, the Bloomhouse did this?
Yes.
Yeah.
Like they're saying this is one of the scariest films that Bloomhouse has ever been involved with.
No, I'm out.
I'm out.
Only because of the real world implications.
I mean, like they really make this thing look like it could happen to you.
But how is the scare factor?
Did they try the cheap scare with the little creepy floors in the...
No.
Dude, it's all online.
Yes.
Everything is front to perspective.
You don't want to talk about the cheap stuff.
They haven't found Bloomhouse yet.
But even on every level, I've got one review.
One review.
Okay.
Even on unfriended, there were elements outside the web in the room.
So my knowledge, this all takes place if I'm not mistaken online, correct?
Well, I mean, yeah, they're all...
It's the same basic premise.
Yeah.
They're all like a computer and all the different things happening in the room, Bob.
That's part of the time, I think.
But no, no, no.
I won't say that they go the cheap route on it.
They really don't.
Oh, really?
They really don't.
Because that's what I was expecting.
Because I saw the first one.
I was like, okay.
It kind of gimmicky.
But...
A lot of my suits you did there.
No, I'd say there's a whole lot of, oh, I see what you did there.
Well, I mean, it's just...
I don't know what that look was for.
I'm like, what?
They didn't know what you meant.
No, he thought that I thought he made a joke.
No, no, no, no, no.
Yeah, exactly.
So would you say this is a fresh, good, scarce style in this film where you...
If you want the scare factor, was it...
Did you find that really good on the scare factor?
I mean, there are some films...
If you're watching the Crowded Theater at night, and you hear everybody around you scream,
it makes everyone scream, you know, scarier.
You watch paranormal activity at home alone during a day on your couch with a shunts bright
by yourself.
It's not as scary as watching the dark theater with all the girls around you screaming.
And see, to me, the first unfriended was more poor...
Pair.
Pair.
Paranormal activity like.
Okay.
Whereas this is more like a found footage film.
And I'm not saying it's Blair Witch-ish, because I know that that film has its detractors.
But to me, this is what I was hoping the first unfriended was going to be more like.
Because, I mean, I'm serious.
It's really hard for me to explain it.
And I know that it's not the kind of film that's for everybody.
You not was standing raw.
But, I mean, it won't appeal to everybody.
So if I can put a bow on that one, you can say...
So what you're saying is it's less jump scare and more of you're sitting there watching it and realizing
this is actually legitimately scary on an emotional level.
It's built tension better.
Like, they kind of like, you know, Hitchcock explained it very well.
Like, you give the audience a glimpse of something.
They know it's there.
The person that's in the room doesn't know.
And you're screaming, freaking out, don't go in there.
Because if you do, bad things are going to happen to you.
Kind of like we did during Alien Covenant when Benedict Corratch has the line.
Take a look.
And we all went, no, no, don't do that.
So it's kind of when he looked at the pod.
Benedict, come back to what?
I'm sorry.
I didn't know that he played the Xenomorph.
Oh, you didn't know that he played the Xenomorph?
He's liking it though.
So it's that kind of this could happen to you.
Yes, that's what I'm telling you.
I mean, this is like the...
And I know this is really overly high praise for a film that probably doesn't really merit such high praise.
But it's kind of like the Batman Begins of horror films to where when you...
And now let me explain.
Wow.
Let me explain.
Whereas Batman Begins grounded a comic book film in reality.
And made you believe this guy could really do this.
To me, that's how this kind of hit me.
Like this is a horror film that could actually truly happen.
Wow.
And how was the acting in this?
It's convincing.
I mean, you think...
I like Gabriel.
How was she in this?
I'm not even sure who she played.
I know that she played Narl.
Yeah, I'm from American Lady.
Then ARL.
That's true, the second.
Oh, Narl!
Oh, yeah, yeah.
Oh, that's just me and I.
It looks like it's an L on the screen.
It was a famous person of the crew.
Yeah.
I know she was in Get Out.
I know she was awesome.
Good girl's revolved.
Perge election year.
She was in the first unfriended if I'm not mistaken.
I think she was one of the few that cared for her.
Oh, she's on Westworld this year.
Yeah.
But she didn't play the same character.
She just...
From the original unfriend.
No, she wasn't in the original unfriended.
She wasn't.
I thought they'd said that somebody cared for her.
I'm looking.
That was an actor that carried through.
I figured she wouldn't know.
How was he acting now?
Well, by the crew overall.
Well, I mean, you know, it's...
It's what you would expect.
Okay.
You know, it's nothing Oscar worthy.
But, you know, it's...
Oh, she was an upgrade too, Don.
Yeah.
She's one of her favorites out there.
Newer.
She's new, but I think she's rising.
Yeah, she was the detective in upgrade.
Well played.
She was the one character that kind of just wouldn't...
wouldn't take things at face value.
She wanted to keep pushing things further
or as your main character, Matthias,
which is like, you know, tap the break, tap the break.
Played by Colin Whittle.
Yeah, he's your primary go-to guy.
He's the guy that acquires the laptop
that all these bad things are on.
Okay.
So it's a pacing in the...
I mean, it's 88 minutes, so it moves at a breakneck pace.
It doesn't have to with that kind of time, right?
Yeah, it doesn't have a lot of time for...
There's not a lot of fat trim off.
There's some clever wordplay
with the name of some of these characters.
You know, the bad guy in particular.
Like their online names?
Yes.
Yeah.
There's some interesting, you know,
tie-ins to ancient texts and stuff like that.
And I don't mean old texts that you forgot
that you sent on your phone.
I'm talking like Greek stuff.
Ancient Greek stuff.
Are any of them named...
He won!
Yeah!
He wouldn't last very long.
Okay, just making sure.
But, I mean, I enjoyed it.
Jules, who normally doesn't go for this kind of thing
and she didn't watch it in front of me.
I watched that one by myself.
She was impressed with this.
And normally, this kind of thing doesn't really do much for her.
But she was like, good lord.
So it did its job.
I think it did its job well.
Better than I really expected it to.
Any other questions?
Don't even forget to the file analysis?
I actually have one thinking about this.
So from the sounds of it,
you're saying like, this isn't a world-beater doing anything.
But it does what it wanted to do very well.
Yes.
And with Bloomhouse doing what they do lately,
which is making the low-budget horror movies,
making a return on it.
And for people that don't know,
Bloomhouse says,
we'll do your movie,
but we're giving you $5 million.
They don't make a movie.
Unless it's an established franchise that they have,
they don't make a movie for more than $5 million.
Right.
Well, it doesn't look like they spent all that much on this.
They didn't have to.
Well, that's where they've gotten
the lower level of look.
We can know we can make movies cheaper.
We know we can get them out and distributed.
But we're making a return.
We're not looking at trying to compete with Marvel.
Right.
But anyways, circling back,
does this feel like something that could be expounded upon
either by them further,
or by other places thinking,
oh, well, this may catch on as a legit scary situation
that you may wind up having its own niche inside of the horror genre.
A sub genre?
Yes.
Very much so.
I mean, no listed budget that I can see.
If the purge can do the kind of business that it's doing,
there's no reason for me to think
that this couldn't do the same thing.
It's just that you're very limited in scope
when it comes to storytelling
because it all takes place in camera in real time,
whereas the purge can spread the narrative out
over the course of an entire evening,
whereas this takes place,
an hour and a half spin in the theater
is an hour and a half spent watching everything.
I like that being told in real time.
I think it's kind of cool.
Because it makes it unique.
It's one of those,
there's a lot going on here kind of situations.
Right.
And they're forced to be very lean,
mean with their storytelling.
And if you know anything about Don and myself,
we are big fans of stuff in real time,
being the fans of 24 that he and I are.
Yeah.
And honestly, Rob, I think you would,
it's not a gore fest.
I know, go ahead and have your finger hurt or something.
No.
But if you know.
No.
But it's,
it's the kind of thing that makes you think.
I mean, it really makes it big.
Oh, believe me,
my paranoia is already well enough where it is.
Thank you.
I'm just,
my mental image on that one.
It's not paranoia if they really are out to get you.
It's just somebody sitting there eating popcorn,
watching the movie,
suddenly they just start eating slower,
just stopping,
to realizing I have gone wrong.
Grabbing their phone and going,
it helps you right back.
Well, the original Bloom House,
that was a $1 million budget made 64 globally.
Yeah.
Well, there's, like I said,
there's a $1 million budget made 64 million globally
on a $1 million budget.
Yeah.
Wow.
Well, that's the Bloom House model.
Yeah, that's their model.
We're going to make it as cheap as possible.
Unless it's an established franchise like The Purge.
Right.
No more than $5 million.
Because when I went to the screening of Upgrade,
the director actually said that.
Because he's worked with them on saw
and some of the other stuff that he's done.
I mean, honestly,
I think this was a better film than
than the first unfriended,
if for no other reason.
Because,
did that crap get it?
Don, is your interest now peaked?
Yeah, it is.
I wish I could have made it.
I mean, I was legally landing at DFW
when you're probably sitting down for this thing.
All right.
Well, then let's get to the final.
Hang on.
I think your note should be kind of mentioned here
that depending on what screening you go to.
Yes, there are actually two different endings.
Yes.
And you don't know when you go,
which ending you're going together.
Oh, really?
Yeah.
And I'm going to have Chad tell me that privately off-air
because I don't want to ruin it for you.
Yeah.
Actually, I have a good question and goes with that then.
Would you say that it may be better
to wait on the disc version that might have both endings?
To close.
To close the thing?
No.
Because then you're choosing
and you're knowing what you're getting.
I'd rather be completely,
unless it's done with some sort of seamless branching thing
and you,
it just gives you,
throws you an ending at random.
Well, everything does come digital now.
Maybe both of them are on there
and it just randomly picks one for you.
See, I know what I'm thinking of is you just watch
that the ad will be as crazy.
Oh, man.
That would be, yeah.
You do it within the same sphere.
Even within the same sphere.
I'm not sure.
I'll be like,
which ending am I going to think of?
I'm like, we don't know.
Or even better,
how would you like to be the projectionist
that sits there and goes ending A or ending B?
And it's like when that,
when the,
it doesn't exist anymore,
but the cigarette burn
that,
from old reels,
where you sit there and you just go,
I hit a button,
one of the buttons,
whichever shall it be,
everyone dies on pushing B.
You become,
you become the
emperor C syrup.
On the cinematic set.
It even,
even worse than that.
You look up and it's just the,
the level of,
the ground thumb,
two thumbs down on A.
That would,
that would be creepy.
I'm actually trying to
look that up right now.
No,
that would be so much of power.
That would be so much fun.
I'm pretty sure I would pay
to do that job.
I just show up and be like,
who do I want to mess with today?
I really dig that.
I mean,
although if,
if I've seen one ending,
I'd be a little irked
if I went back and saw the exact same one
all over again.
That is fair.
But,
I think that's kind of cool
that,
if that is indeed
very marketing.
Well, and,
and you think about it,
it's like in that same vein,
if there was a,
and I,
I know this is going to be
borderline sacrilege.
You know what?
I think it weighs that way
because in this story
from IndieWire,
it says,
a list of instructions
for projection is shared
on Twitter,
includes an unusual warning.
Please note that this feature
has two different endings.
Okay.
So I'm wondering if they're both there.
Oh, that's so great.
It says,
Blumhouse's latest offering
appears to have either added
the new conclusion
or simply saved it
for theatrical audience,
though, that's yet to be confirmed.
Hmm.
Wow.
So there's no word on yet
of knowing how the ending differs
from the original or whether
there's any way of knowing
which one movie viewers
will be treated to.
I got a pretty good idea
of how it's going to differ.
It's no reason
how the ending is set up.
Hmm.
And here, I mean,
I'm looking at the tweet
from a projectionist named
Rob Trench
at Rob Trench on Twitter,
we want to give it,
big bold red letters.
Thanks, Bobbie T.
Yeah.
Please note that this feature
has two different endings.
That's crazy.
That would be, that would be
amazing, though, if it just,
if you just picked it
at random.
And what does that mean?
Twice a minute,
ticket sales.
Yeah.
That's also fair.
If it gets out more.
If it gets out.
Because having, having just
heard about this,
when is this due to release?
Uh, by the time people
hear this.
Okay.
By the time people hear this,
they'll be able to go see it.
Yeah, so for, for goodness sake,
get that word out
because that alone
is some really brilliant
marketing for this thing.
And that's the only
of knowing which one you'll see.
That's pretty cool.
All right.
Let's go through the final
analysis.
We'll do the final analysis on
the show.
We're not going to give you
thumbs up, thumbs down.
Letter grades, numbers,
logins, and not Kenny.
Corrupted hard drives.
Anything like that.
I'm going to ask you to have
the two questions.
Question number one is,
would he see this film again
if the answer's yet?
No.
Then we're done here.
But if the answer's yes.
Here's the spectrum from
best to the best to the best.
Full price in a theater
down to a twilight showing
down to a daytime showing.
And that might kind of
something Don was saying earlier.
I'll be interested to see
how this goes.
Down to early morning on a
night.
Actually, leaving your house
to get it from red box,
down to streaming it on
Netflix, down to cable.
Chat.
Would you see
unfriended dark web again?
Absolutely.
All right.
How far are you willing to
go?
How Matt and they
sound good for me.
It's not exactly a visual
or audio tour to
force.
So almost a bit of a
contradiction to something Don
was saying earlier about seeing
a movie like this during the
day versus seeing it
in the evening.
But you know I'm talking
about it.
No, but I'm not saying
I'm not saying I'm not saying
it's a bad thing.
I'm just saying that his
judgment on it would be
it wouldn't affect it anymore
if you saw it.
Like you said, I agree with
you.
Seeing something in the dark
like that.
Absolutely.
Even though the day when I'm
talking about a home during the day
and your couch with the DVD
by yourself.
Right.
With the windows and everything.
But he's just saying that
leading and it's still being
daytime wouldn't affect it either
when.
No, absolutely.
Yeah.
Still in the theater it's dark.
Yeah.
Yeah.
The people around who are
going to get to that atmosphere
for it.
But you almost go there.
You almost go there.
All right.
Before we get to that, I just
want to ask though, with the
two-ending thing, does that
adjust it to a matinee or
would that bump it up for you?
Or are you saying it's a
matinee because of that?
Yes.
Okay.
So what would it be
independently?
If there were one.
It only saw it once.
Same thing.
Okay.
Same thing.
It was good.
So the multiple weddings
don't affect you either way.
It makes me want to go see it
again, but I don't think it
would affect you.
It would bump up to 11.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So all the external factors
all of a sudden, it's still
is what it is.
Yeah.
It's enjoyable.
And it's one of those things
where you're like, yeah, I'm
going to go probably delete my
Facebook profile.
Sounds like a successful
debut for writer-director Steven
Susco's unfriended dark web.
