My name is Rob, I'm the executive producer of the Clubhouse podcast.
And I'm a fan of Atlanta, especially its baseball team.
I'm just going to put it out there.
Also joining me for this particular episode across the desk is my co-host.
And a man, I don't know that he's ever been to Atlanta.
But we'll ask him, he is Chad, welcome sir.
Very briefly, very brief swim through Atlanta when I was in the Navy and was going to boot camp
and we had a layover in Atlanta at the airport and just jump right on a plane right
to Orlando.
Okay, fair enough.
I was there.
We'll give you credit for that.
Okay, we'll count that.
Whatever we do it, by the way, this is iTunes exclusive number 190.
So you've got the 190, you've got 99, and it's also our 99th episode of the season.
So we're going somewhere with this.
Whatever we do one of these, it is to review something and this is no exception.
We today, or tonight, we're not judging when you listen to this thing.
We are going to be reviewing the brand new film from Director John Hillcoat.
You would know him from the road.
If you remember that, like a few years ago, with Vigo?
Vigo?
Yeah.
Also, Lawless?
A couple years ago, Tom Hardy?
Oh yeah.
Yeah.
He's also done a lot of music video stuff, too.
He did a video documentary in 1985 called the NXS swing and other stories, does that ring
a bell to you?
It does.
He did that as well.
And this is a film called Triple Nine.
Let me let me run down this cast for you.
The great chew would tell edge of four.
Greatness.
Okay.
Casey Affleck.
Okay.
Anthony Mackie.
Falcon.
Woody Harrelson.
Wow.
Aaron Paul.
Kate Winslett.
Good Lord.
Gal Gadot.
Norman Reedus.
Oh God.
Michael Kenneth Williams.
Justin Collins Jr.
Good.
Gosh.
Yeah.
My daughter's going to have to go see this now.
Now that Norman's in it.
It does take place in the aforementioned Atlanta, which is where Walking Dead's film.
And I got the chance to screen this the other night.

Big fans of those guys.
We want to thank them for having us out there.
Also the people that open Rhodes films, for letting us be there as well.
Here's what you need to know.
Okay.
Good bank robbery.
Bank robbery happens.
These guys are really good, but they're after it a safe deposit box.
They get a safe deposit box, they get to their rendezvous point.
And not all of them are career criminals, so if we can just put it to you that way.
Might be a little dirty deeds done, dirt cheap going on here, people working both sides
of the fence.
Okay.
Kind of reservoir dog'sish.
Kind of?
Okay.
You also find out that they are working for the Russian mob, which at one point Woody
Harrelson's character refers to, they're the Jewish Russian mob, and he refers to them as
Lakshar Nostra.
Very funny bit.
Head it up by Kate Winslet's character, because her, she is the wife, the husband is in prison.
Her name is Irina Vlaslov, and she's having these guys do these jobs for her to help
get her husband out of prison.
So she needs them to do one more job, but the item that she needs them to get is in
a unmarked homeland security facility.
So, and who couldn't do that in there, just sleepwalking.
As this is all going on, because these, let's just put it out there.
Some of these guys are cops.
Right?
Okay.
While this is all going on, Anthony Mackie's character Marcus Belmont gets a new partner.
His name is Chris Allen, played by the Casey Affleck, and they worked the gang unit.
Okay.
So, when they find out about this job at the homeland security building, they figure the
only way they're going to pull this off.
Is to distract the police force with what they call a 999.
You know what that is?
No.
I first heard of it, and I'm not ashamed to say, and I put this in my written review at www.theclubhouse
podcast.com.

Well, done, sir.
In the original trailer for Lithu-Weapon 2, and Joe Pitchy says, should I call 999 off
to the distress?
And he goes, sure.
Oh.
That's what we're referring to.
Very nice.
So they decide to come up with a plan to plan a 999 to distract the cops so that they
can go get this item from the secure homeland facility.
Okay.
That's kind of where I want to leave it.
Okay.
I want to put too much out there.
Yeah, because, I mean, this movie is the solid two hours, so now we're 55.
I'm just going to say it.
There's a lot going on here.
A lot.
It's kind of like, it almost sounds like a mash up of reservoir dogs and heat.
Kind of sort it.
It's got to heat field to it.
But not a Michael Manfield to it, that's any sense.
I'm kind of in a conundrum with this film because I'm going to use a phrase that normally
people might take badly when referring to something within it genre.
It's ahead of the curve.
We see a lot of films that go direct to DVD that are just like this.
Oh, okay.
You know what I mean?
Yeah.
Good decent name actors in a movie about gangs and cops and dirty dealings and things
of that nature.
I went into this going.
It's going to be another one.
It was like street kings with Kiana.
You know what I mean?
Yeah.
And I was kind of like, man, do we need this?
I can honestly say I was entertained by this film.
Well, I mean, the premise sounds interesting.
It's not going to take the world by storm.
But I can honestly say I didn't want those two hours back.
It's not stellar, but it doesn't inhale with great force.
I mean, you look at the cast first of all.
I mean, in my gosh, I will warn you though.
There's quite a bit of overacting.
Oh, is that?
And I don't want to mention any names that her initials might be Kate Winslet.
Really?
And a little bit of overacting by Erin Paul in this.
But it's not.
It didn't take me out of it.
Because you got to think she's playing a Russian mob wife.
So she kind of, there's a little bit of over the top going on here.
But I can't say I hated it.
She's not on a Kate Blanchette crystal skull level.
No, no, not that bad.
Okay.
It's well shot.
It's got a real gritty feel to it without looking gritty.
Does that make sense?
Yeah.
That makes sense.
It's shot very well.
There's a lot of really good.
I wouldn't call them POV shots, but more like over the shoulder shots.
As they're hunting people down in like apartment buildings and stuff.
Okay.
That are kind of cool.
Affleck is great in this.
I think you're going to be seeing a lot more people give a lot more due to Casey Affleck
as things.
We saw another film with him earlier this year in the finest hours, which we all agree
he did very well in.
He does very well in this.
He kind of helped carry the thing, really.
Woody's a little over the top, but when is he?
Yeah.
This is what he were talking about.
And I can honestly say this and I'm glad you're sitting down.
There's some twists and turns in this thing that even I kind of went, okay, you've gotten
me there.
Why were you glad I was sitting down for that?
Because that's not something that you would normally hear from me.
I'm usually pretty good about sniffing stuff out in the film.
So it wasn't completely predictable.
It was predictable enough to give me room to go, oh, did not see that coming.
Okay.
So again, I didn't walk out of the theater like.
I have to watch this again right now.
But by the same token, I didn't hate it and I didn't love it.
See, that's the weird thing for me on this.
It's going to find an audience.
I think it's going to find an audience in a later style run.
And what way?
How do you figure?
This will find most of its life I think on home, home release or VOD.
Okay.
It'll do well when it's first weekend, but I think it'll taper off because it's
the kind of thing that people are going to see the trailer and go, I've seen this
a million times.
That's, yeah, it looks kind of fun when you can watch it.
But when you watch it, it's actually, it's, it's kind of fun.
I mean, with the people involved, I can't help but kind of give it a little bit of attention.
I mean, Wonder Woman's in it.
Yeah.
And quite a few of these people, though, don't get as much screen time as you would
think they would.
It's mainly the story of two hotels character.
Okay.
And Mattie's character is kind of interwoven therein.
Everybody else just kind of passes through briefly.
Not everybody, but a good chunk of them.
A guy who I think is incredibly underrated in this and just been underrated overall, who
I'm a huge fan of, it's Clifton Collins, Jr., where would I know him from?
He's one of those guys that you're like, you see him and you're like, oh, that dude.
You would know him, the guy in there.
He was in Pack Rim.
Let's see.
He's going to be in the new Westworld HBO series.
He was in season one of Ballers.
He was the lawyer.
He's in the upcoming night of Cups.
He did one episode of the Black List.
He was Obstendow Choi in Pack Rim.
Okay.
I'd have to look at him.
Let's see what else did you know him from.
He was the voice of, oh, that was in the video game of Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter.
He was the voice of Edgar Allan Poe.
He did a video game based on that track.
I guess I did.
He was uncredited as one of the vegan police in Scott Pilgrim versus the world.
He was Romeo and Boundock Saints too.
Never saw it.
You never saw the second one.
But that means he's worked with Reedus before.
Correct.
He was I.L.
And Star Trek.
He did a couple episodes of the shield.
He was I.L.
And the Abram Star Trek.
Yes.
Maybe he was a robbie one.
Here, let me just show you the picture.
Yes, he was, he was like the main, he was, uh, band is right hand, robbie one.
He's that guy in the thing.
Okay.
Right?
Huge fear of the guy.
He does a really good job here.
He plays a homicide detective.
But again, the weird thing is I, I don't feel either way.
I'm just, just on the good side of neutral.
But not by much.
Yeah, you, you wouldn't, you wouldn't tear it down, but you wouldn't necessarily do.
It does bring a little something different to the table, which I admire and I respect.
But some of it, I, I felt like the second act was a little too beefy and the third act needed
more.
Okay.
Okay.
Like the middle third of it, there's a lot of plot exposition.
But they maybe could have trimmed some out and added more to the big climactic deal, right?
Which would have made it better for me.
It's still good.
But I think that would have made it better.
Any other questions you have to do in the final analysis?
No, let's, let's say the final analysis.
All right, the way to the final analysis on this show.
We don't give you thumbs up, thumbs down.
We don't give you a letter grades or rankings or stars or anything like that.
Our audience whom we affectionately refer to as the Empire, they want us to dig a little
bit deeper.
So we're going to do that.
So the questions that we need to ask number one is what, what I see this again, the answer
is no, we're done here.
But if the answer is yes, we rank it based on how far we're willing to go to see it again
if the answer is yes, what I pay full price, what I go to a matinee, twilight, early morning
on a weekend, second run at the dollar theater, red box, netflix cable.
I would see this again.
This is one of those, remember how spike you should do movies for guys who like movies?
Yes, this is that category of film.
This is one of those that of it genre, like I said, it's ahead of the curve in its genre.
But that genre's got kind of a dense curve to it.
Don't go in expecting to be wild.
Take your brain at the door and you're going to have a good time with it because you're
going to have time so you're going to feel a little tense, especially in some of the
pursuit scenes.
They shot those really well.
I was very impressed by that.
But I think as far as I would go to see it again, at most at the dollar theater, because
it would be nice if you watched it in a different decent sound system.
It's kind of one of those movies that you just want to watch stuff's going to explode,
kind of movies.
You know what I mean?
So it's not like it would almost be better served if you just kind of waited for it to
show up on the home video.
If you got a decent sound system at the house.
And you know, I have a guy's night where you get together and you pop this thing in and
get to watch a bunch of stuff explode and people shooting and stuff like that.
Stuff's going to blow up real nice.
It really is.
Again, I'm a fan of the film, not president of the fan club, but I'm a fan of it.
