Welcome. My name is Rob. I'm the executive producer of the clubhouse podcast and I've been called nutty at least once in my life.
I'm scared of it but I'm not alone for this episode joining me across the desk as he tends to do from time to time is the official fact checker of this show and a man who is nutty by nature.
You may know it was fondant though but it's a moment I'm going to come down sometimes you feel like a nut sometimes you don't.
It's very true. Yeah that's how this is starting. We need help.
That's the beginning of this thing. We need mental help. Yes we do.
Whatever we do one of these it is to review something and this is no exception brand new animated feature hitting some theaters near you.
From the guy that directed escape from planet earth. His name is Cal Brunker and it is the nut job to nutty by nature.

I got to sit back and relax on this one because you checked this out. I did not have a chance to but that means I get to ask all the pertinent questions.
Yes you do. So again this is a sequel. It's very cool. Is that what they're doing? I don't know. I made that up.
Don't use that. This follows the events of the first films. The first film we're certainly and his friends must stop Okten City's mayor played by Bobby Moynihan from destroying their home to make way for a dysfunctional amusement park.
Let me give you some of the more of the voice cast here. You got Will Arnatch. You got Catherine Haigel. You got Maya Rudolph. You got Jackie Chan.
You've got Peter Stormare. You've got Bobby Canna Valley. Emmy winner and Coconut Creek High School alumnus. Thank you very much.
Jeff Dunham's in this. Gabriel look glacius. Sebastian Maniscala who's a great comedian as well.
Cari Walgreens in this. Rob Tinkler, Jimmy Lemieux. All in this film. It runs right about an hour and a half by the looks of things.
Round there. Yep. All right Don so let's get to the nitty gritty of this thing because that's the only one who saw it.
Yeah I know. Again I've just got to ask the questions and you get to answer them. All right. Tell me what you thought of this film.
Well give me a little thing. The first one I never saw. Okay fair enough.
But if you read up a little bit most kids movies you don't it's not like you're good at this much.
Yeah they kind of where that job one kind of left off maybe a few months down the road or a few seasons or two down the road.
But the scrolls the moles all the little clan of little happy animals are happy life is good because even real the
nut shop is closed from the end of the last one which is a good thing. But in the basement there's that whole supply of peanuts and walnuts.
Got to store it up. Yeah they got stored up a big bag of peanuts and so they're not having a scrunch for food.
Life is good. They're having to have high on the hawk. You know what I'm with it.
Well there's a little boo boo in the shop goes by by. Yeah.
So it's like oh we have to start going back to the way nature intended.
So they're going back across street living in Liberty Park and you have a Andy the other squirrel who's played by Catherine Hagel or voice by her.
Who's the more reasonable one saying hey we got into work ethic you know nature intended to do this out of you.
But now here comes the evil mayor played voice by Bobby Monahan who I'm a huge fan of SNL alumnus.
Yeah but his pockets are lined because you say and look at all these businesses.
I'm getting money off the stop on skimming but that one park across the street.
I ain't getting nothing from there. So I'm going to build a park in there.
But if you use a park so get more money even though he has stacks of money in the desk.
So he wants to carry down Liberty Park put into amusement park and when he starts building the thing he's cutting every corner of the sun because he's that greedy.
You know so it's you know it's not Disneyland maybe like Earl's fun land.
Interact your own risk you know kind of thing.
So now that's the big thing. They want to get their park back.
You know they want to stop the amusement park is when it's dangerous and they want to you know have a place to live because
the other place where there's a park has turned it to golf course you know times are tough.
Alright so that's the basic you know plot of the film.
Now the film's about 90 minutes. Good film.
Flows well. I thought it didn't seem too long. There wasn't any dragging.
It's a good storyline for the adults. It's not the best storyline. It's not going to be like Moana or something like that.
But the adults could go have a good time when it comes to the plot line.
Not too complicated I'd say. Alright give some good lessons in between there.
Of course there's that suspension of disbelief you got to put in there with a lot of animated films.
They made a film. Yeah I have it. There's a few scenes where it's kind of like well this happened in real life humans would get hurt.
But you know it's like have fun on the animation that kind of thing.
So but I thought they're responsible in that aspect versus one film where they say don't walk down the barrel of load again.
We're going to do it you know it's not that bad. Okay so I'll give that I'll give him kudos on that.
Now I've seen the trailer for this. Yes I got two words.
Yeah Jackie Chan. Yeah.
Loved him in the trailer. Yeah.
Is he as good as the trail in the film as he is in the trailer. Yes he does.
Here's the thing. Just don't call him cute.
Yeah don't. Yeah that's the thing. Yeah you learn that real fast.
He's the head of the you know they he's a weapon of mouse destruction.
Exactly. So they go searching in China land they reach up in China land and go back to this alley and all of a sudden
here comes Jackie Chan in his clan saying you get out of China land this is our turf that kind of thing.
So you see him you see that character for a little bit about halfway through for about five ten minutes.
And he doesn't return till basically the last quarter of the film.
So his character is not in all the way through but it that way.
Okay. Okay. So.
But on that aspect.
It the voicing I thought was really good.
I think how with the tone of the voice and the characteristics.
Hagel does very good because she has that down her.
Yeah. I go she has that down her kind of tone.
The voice of reason in her voice and her tone quality.
I think really enhances that in the film.
The one that surprised me believe it or not.
I'm going to hand.
Cause I'll be going to hand. I'm a huge fan.
You know you see him on SNL he's the kind of when they do the fox and friend buffoons or they do all these different things.
He kind of has that kind of.
I could have a riblet.
I could do your job.
But in this in this film he's not that kind of voice.
He's not the you know lovable big guy.
His character is the character the mayor is that kind of that deep pot deep pocket.
I'm rich. I got lots of money.
I'm a you know kind of that Texan mayor with deep pockets who's greedy greedy greedy.
So honestly if I didn't know that was one a hand from IMDB.
I never would have guessed it.
You know never would have guessed that that would have been one a hand doing that part.
So but voiceovers very well.
The whole cast.
I think compliments everybody very well.
I don't think there's a there's a doorbell.
Hello, but I think the cast they have their own role.
No one tries to outshine the other person.
They they got their equal time.
There's a lot of voices in this.
You got the mole.
You got the squirrels.
You got all different kinds of animals and they all play their part.
So yes, there is the lead to characters.
But those two characters have the main part,
but the supporting cast compliments it and they don't outshine each other.
So there's a good balance of all the different characters in this.
Okay, but if you like Chan, it's going to be the last part of the film basically.
That's all right.
That's good, but he does very good.
So I think voiceovers I got to give it to.
Anything you want to cover for a good final analysis?
Yeah animation.
Okay.
Yeah, the animation to look the film.
I did like it.
Here's the unfortunate bit.
We are in today's world when it comes to animation.
Yes, we are.
It's very enhanced.
This film when it came out 10, 15 years ago, people would have been like,
wow, the animation is incredible.
I unfortunately would call it par with the course today.
Okay.
But not bad.
Just not mind blowing.
It's not book a life or boom me away.
But it or train your dragon.
But the animation is good.
It's serviceable.
No, I would say better.
It's that, you know, would you say, you know, how the rare to well done medium well?
Okay, fair enough.
You know, but it's not the mind blowing.
But unfortunately the animation in today's world, you know, but it's par.
It's up there.
They put the budget into it.
So it won't disappoint on that.
I don't know if they ever did this in 3D or not.
If they did, I don't know.
The poster does have.
I believe the poster does have the real 3D logo.
Let me double check for you.
But there was a couple.
It does have real 3D on the on.
So you will be able to you'll have access to it if it's shown that way.
Well, watching from there are a few scenes where I think the 3D would enhance it.
Okay.
But I don't know if I would pay that extra cost for looking back at the film and looking at it and looking at what happened with that really enhance it too much.
I would pay the extra cost from what I saw.
Even though I saw in 2D.
So I could be wrong.
You know, I didn't see in 3D.
So I can't give that 100% perfect thing.
But the kids were really...
Oh, there's one thing I want to say.
A lot of kids in the screening, like we do in past animated films, right?
A lot of families.
Right, right.
The kids really got into this.
They were really watching it.
And the thing is, there's some dark scenes.
There's a couple dark scenes.
Not really bad, but there's a scene where one five-year-old girl in a crowd about two rows behind me, up about three seats.
She all poor me.
You know, I don't have this spoiler.
Fair enough.
But it redeems itself.
So there are a couple dark scenes, like a lot of Disney films, but not too dark or anything like that.
Okay.
So overall, yeah.
All right, let's get to the final analysis and the way we do the final analysis on the show.
We're not going to give you thumbs up, thumbs down.
We're not going to give you letter grades, numbers, paw prints, nothing like that.
We are going to ask two questions.
Question number one is, would you see this film again?
If the answer is no, we're done here.
But if the answer is yes, it turns into how far it's done.
We're going to go to see it.
From the best of the best of the worst of the best, here's the gambit.
Full price of the theater, twilight, matinee, early morning on a weekend, second run of the dollar theater,
actually leaving your house to go to Red Box and get it streaming on Netflix or waiting for it on cable.
Don, would you see this film again?
Yeah.
How far are you willing to go?
I'd recommend it as a family day, but at the dollar theaters.
Okay.
It's not going to be the mind blowing, but if you have, if, you know, there's a dollar theater by and it's there,
I think that'd be a perfect thing because it's still being afternoon out.
You're still going to have to get gouged and involved by having to pay for popcorn and all that.
But still, it would save you a lot more money.
So I think it would be worth a dollar theater or second run.
It is directed by Cal Brunker, the nut job to nutty by nature.
