Whenever we do one of these it is to review something and this is no exception.
Wes Ball is back for the third time directing the third film in the maze runner series which may or may not be the conclusion.
You don't know.
It's called the death cure.
Before we start this whole thing.
Yes sir.
We got to take your best friends.
I love the fact that we have such great vendors that number one give us the chance to see films before their release so that we can help the empire make the best decisions they can.
But I also like the fact that they let us give our honest opinions.
That's what we love about our vendors.
Because we're not real good at blowing smoke.
Never really have been.
So Thomas is your main character.
He has escaped the running of the maze.
I have not seen any of these films.
And from what I gather in the trailer he now has to break back into the maze because there's some kind of a virus.
No.

They got out of the maze after the first one.
Okay.
And it was a good move.
I like the first one.
I know you did.
I know you did.
The second film is finding out that there's this virus out in the world and all that in taking these kids because they think they're immune to the virus to try to get it.
That's the second film.
The scorched trials.
The scorched trials.
So the third one here is they are kind of the resistance to this major evil corporation because they really mean to these kids and all that.
Okay.
Because the virus will turn somebody into a zombie.
Because a very active zombie.
You're very active.
Because that's what happens.
So they have one of the original crew.
Minho.
Who's the first one?
The company has him.
So Josh.
Minho played by Ki-Hong Lee.
Yeah.
Fantastic.
They basically want to go in and break him out.
That's the story.
Okay.
And try to, in some way, hopefully save the planet from this evil virus.
Because it's a cure for death.
Hence the name.

So again, let's just be honest.
I am not the demographic for this film.
I have not seen any of them.
You don't.
Has actually been to, has he has screened all three of these.
He is our maze runner course.
I can tell you who is extremely excited for all of these anytime they're on.

And let's go ahead and let's just say the final analysis has already arrived.

Because I'm going to bury the lead.
I'm going to read the final sentence of Don's written review.

The end of our time in this episode.
Because when I read it, I was sitting at my desk at my day job and I was like, I read it like four times.
Is this happening right now?
Like, Don is one of the mellowest dudes I know.
Like, he has his passions.
I don't know that I've ever seen him.
Seen a film.
Make him this angry.
And let's put it in proper framework because, and I feel like I'm talking for Don, but I'm trying to get it so he doesn't have to have a meltdown.

That's what they're here for.
This thing is two hours and 25 minutes long, which I would venture to say has to be the longest of the three.

Two hours and 20 minutes or 25.
There's two hours and 22 was split to mid.
Okay. According to IMDB.
So first of all, that's a long time to do anything much less watch a movie.
The first one was an hour 53.
The second one was two eleven.
So these have gotten longer as they've gone.
Uh-huh.
What happened here, dude?
Well, you never gave the word.

We do still have to do the final analysis because that's the way we do this.
But what about this film?
I was excited to read your review because I know how much you love the first two films.
You were very, very big on them.
You know, the first one I love, the first one I love.
I know you love the first and for sure.

The second one is kind of like, uh, and it worried me because that's what I put in my review at www.covasplacast.com.

And the actual paragraph is that sometimes when they do these trilogies,
the first ones of big hits, so let's make a sequel as fast as we can and it flocks.
But in its defense, though, this is a series of books.
It's not like they were making this up.
You know, it wasn't like, hey, let's take the Hobbit and turn into a trilogy.
I'm just saying.

There is source material for this.
Yes.
But they threw the source material out with the second movie already.
Oh, did they really?
For the most part.
Okay.
This film.
Because your lady is, as you said, loves these films and she's probably filled you in on all of the minutia there.
Absolutely.
She's even read the companion book.
Uh, I cannot remember the name off the top of my head.
But I did have two points.
Looking forward to this review from Don for two very specific reasons.
Because they threw out the source material.
How bad have we gone off course?
No, I don't know.
Don, do you, you haven't read the books, have you?

So you really don't know how far away.
Oh, no, I'm not going to find that out until after we see the movie and I get the full synopsis on the way home.

I'm trying as your friend.
I don't like you so much.
You say, sir, I don't think you have to understand that.

I don't think he has the choice.
And again, don't do this so that the empire can make the best decision with their entertainment dollars.
But sometime I am making the conscious choice on this one.
I fully am.
Because I fully believe that Dylan O'Brien who plays Thomas in the movie is a future star.
After seeing him in American assassin, I can tell you with certainty he can carry a more serious.
And one of the scenes in the trailer is the scene he got injured on.
You were telling me the other day.
Because he got injured on the set of this and he shut the production down for.
I actually it shut it down for like two months or something.
I think it was more like a year.
Well, it was it was a really long time because he broke his femur if I remember correctly.
But the gist is I also wonder how much of it was.
They're all amped up to make this movie.
And then your star gets hurt and you either have the choice of recasting which got shot down.
Similarly, or were they just losing steam waiting for him to heal up to rehab up?
Because there was genuine questions of whether or not he would even be able to keep shooting.
I mean, the fact that Don has been this quiet.
I'm waiting.
I'm waiting for you.

I mean, talk about this movie.

Two hours and 20 minutes.
It's way too long.
They drug this out.
So are you saying it should have been two minutes?
Kind of like us dragging out 11 and a half minutes before we let.

This thing was just if you would have done a watch gauge the first 15 minutes seemed okay.
But then from there that's this is the pot of two hours and 20 minutes.
They try to rescue their friend.
That's it for two hours and 20 minutes.

Does that sound like a plot of two hours and 20 minutes?
You remember how you had me out there for your mettle for song to song?
This is where I'm having my meltdown.
Two hours and 20 minutes of just like really so many times and then this film I'm going.
Really?
Is it like the first law of the rings film where they were just walking for two minutes?
Yes, but worse.
And the thing is why I'm watching this they go into these action sequences which are not needed.
It's like were they at least well done?
The CGI is good.
Okay.
If you like the big bang of my back.
Yes, this is good.
They bang of my back.
But the suspension for disbelief on this is so horrible.
I mean horrible.
Remember so let me let me frame that because I want to address that because you said this in your written review.
Isn't kind of the major concept of the maze runner a suspension of disbelief?
Not for being a sci-fi and what I mean let me get into that.
Yeah, please do because I want because I really want you to clarify that.
Remember the movie Swordfish with John Travolta?
You mean Thordfish?

Remember the swordfish that John Travolta Thordfish was a black fish.
I'm sorry.
Remember the scene with the bus?
How this one little helicopter picks up the bus and drags it around?
I really am trying to block as much of that film out of my mind as possible.
They did it twice in this film.
Oh dear.

Oh dear.
Swordfish twice.
Oh dear.
Okay.
I want to add a footnote to this.
It was actually a severe head and brain injury that collapsed the right side of his face.
Oh my god.
Okay.
And he was out of commission for seven months.
They had to postpone the death cure because they had a schedule set with Michael Keaton to make American assassin.
And then they had to come back to doing the death cure.
Oh dear.
Okay.
Well.
So but you can't say at least the effects were done well.
Yes.
I will give that.
Because I saw a film recently that like even bad fight choreography.
Like it was so bad.
Well this special effects were good.
Oh yeah.
So there is a silver lining in here somewhere.
Yes.
We just have to find another rock layer to get there.
I always call him Shane from the shield.
He's in this.
He's the great Walton Goggins.
You know I am a huge fan of.
Yeah.
He's in this thing for this.
As you like to Walton Goggins.
But fantastic actor.
Big fan.
So many times I'm just like.
And isn't the guy that played um...
Baylish on Lord of the Rings is in this, isn't he?

Also known as the mayor of Baltimore in the in the wire.
Aiden Gillen.
Is that his name?

But when I was watching this.
Oh.
Giancarlo Espositos.

Oh he's great.

Going back to the second movie.
Giancarlo Esposito was the best part of that.
But I mean.
At least the effects were good.

And the fight choreography was good.
Yes.
But even the emotional moments.
And let me just say this one thing.

They try to review.
They try to get this cheap emotional pop.
And I'm just going.
Oh lord.

What the music?
It's like.
Oh my god.
I'm going to cry.
I'm going to cry.

Did you yell?
Boo!
At any point.
I was silent.
And so many times.
You ever seen where I just cut my head down and shake in.
Kind of like I do on a weekly basis on this show.
I'm like really.
They did that really.
Like they're making buildings fall.
They can just out of the blue.
I mean.
I understand in sci-fi.
But just this whole suspension of disbelief.
And the thing was I'm like.
Oh, it's about to end.
No, let's add another action sequence.
That's not even needed in the plot.
Just to extend it so we can have some more action.
We got to fail to.
22 hours.
20 minutes.
This sounds fantastic.
It's just like.
No, not another action sequence.
No, it has nothing to do with the plot.
Just.
And this thing.
Oh.
Okay.
Okay.
And this is one moment.
Pull to here.

Okay.
He's in the first one.
And I don't care.
Spoiler.
Three, two.
Don't say the one.
He's alive.
He comes back.
Even though at the end of the first show of the first movie.
He gets stabbed through the heart.
And you see him die.
He is dead.
I'm back alive.
Oh, the zombie thing.
Right?
No.
They say.
What are you doing?
Well, somebody came by and saved me and patched me up.
At the end of the first meal.
There is a stake all the way through his heart.
There's a big hole in his chest.
But he survived.
I'm like, really?
You're back?
They patched me up.
That's our explanation.
What was that?
What was that old Adam Sandler routine?
The goat.
And he got away from the old man.
He got away from the old man.
And they had pictures of him on the roller coaster.
And he's like, how did you got the roller?
I was on.
I was on.
I was on the roller coaster.
They superimposed me.
Kind of the same thing.
Yeah.
That's like.
When a character passes away, I'll try to be spoiler free.
It's just like they tried to do the motion.
No, he's dead.
He's dead.
They shot all the yellow.
I love everything that's going on here.
The only thing that makes us better is he.
Don is so upset.
He can't even stay near the microphone.
I don't want to yell at the microphone.
Which I greatly appreciate.
For those people that do not get the visual of this,
Don is a lovely shade of purple right now.
Sometimes I go really, really.
Oh dear.
Now let's ask the more important question now.
Yeah.
How was your wife dealing with this?
Because you saw the other two before you met her.
So had she seen the other two going into this?
I love my wife and she wasn't able to go.
Oh, okay.
It was just me.
I was just wondering if the question was whether or not
it was how his faith dealing with him reacting or the movie itself.
If I took her to this, I'd be going,

But no, I mean, I'd be apologizing to my wife for taking her to this thing.

I mean, the hot is they try to rescue their friend.
But it's just like a one-action sequence.

Do you think at any point they were like,
hey, it worked for saving private Ryan?

And so much of this stuff was so predictable.
It's just like, oh, Lord.
So the question, I want to shift to Alex
because I want to ask him a very important question.

Given everything that's going on right now,
do you allow Sean to hear this before you go?
Absolutely not.

I don't like jading her to anything.
But I can honestly say, I am more excited to see this
after hearing how much done hated it.
And then at the end, they got a little kumba.

You know, everything's so happily, so luckily.

I mean, there was a, there was a,
he kind of just spoiled the big thing.
Got that, that's it.
Because one of the critics when we left goes,
so you saved the world in your paradise.
But what kind of relation correlation
is this with religion?
I mean, is this a religious religion?
Can I guess who that was?
No, but the name is so Marcus Blake,
and we look at each other.
We don't want to say any names,
but his initials are Marcus.
No, he didn't say that,
but when we got done,
we're looking at each other going,
yeah.

And it's like, yeah.
I'm not going to see part two after seeing this thing.

I feel like I'm going to need to write a rebuttal
after seeing this.

I mean, in how, once seen,
they are about,
I don't know,
12 stories up in the building,
and they jump into one of those little ponds
at the front of the building.
That's about two feet deep, and they survived.
Do you mean a fountain?

It's the cement pond.
Just imagine this belief.
If you jump out of 120 feet in the air
and try to land in a little fountain,
that's about maybe four feet.
Hey, I've seen that happen in the circus, sir.
Yeah, but.
Oh, I just like, no, please don't.
The suspension display is just horrible.
And the emotional, trying to make it emotional.
And so many times I go, I'm going to cry.
I don't know what was shot at just thinking in my head.
I just looked down.
Now, let me, let me ask you this though.
Yeah.
You can freely admit that you are not the target demo for this.
No, I'm not going to say that because I really like the first one.
I'm just saying though.
But who this film caters to is a bit younger than us.
Let's be honest.
Yeah, the action.
So would you say that the target audience for this
will enjoy it?
Or do you think that it's just,
it even panders too badly for them?
Well, if you want to use that stereotypical Millennial
who doesn't want it,
yeah, that might pander to them.
But still, like I said, the first one I like,
the second one I'm kind of going, huh?
Because I can really get into this kind of stuff.
I really like this kind of stuff.
The first one, really.
It was very, very high on the first one.
I know for sure.
I so can't wait to hear Sean's response to this.
If she goes, it's the best film of the year.
Well, I mean, for her, it could be because it's the only movie she's seen so far.
She also loved Geostorm.

So many times I go, oh, dear, also.

that I would watch this film again.
If I was an accused terrorist and they're trying to torture me
by showing me this film over and over,

As much as I truly liked the first films,
this one is the exact other side of that spectrum.
As a matter of fact,
this is all the time this film gets on writing my review
since they still enough of it already.
So much so to the point that I can say with a fair amount of its certainty
that this film will make my top 10 worst of the year
and it's only January.
I want you to edit that.
I did not put the word fair amount of certainty.
No, this is, I know it's mid-January.
You've got to leave some kind of a margin for error.
No, this is it's January.
Terence Mal comes out with 10 films this year,
which he could.
He could.
So we don't know.
What the other lead we're bearing is,
this justified so little of your time that your entire review
is three sentences.
It could be.
I mean...
No, I would not say this will make my top 10 worst of the year.
I mean, he literally says it here.
There were so many moments
where I was saying to myself,
really?

Or just looking down and shaking my head?
People around me at work had to
have thought I was losing my mind
because I was laughing so hard reading this.
Because I know I'm going to see it.
I genuinely hope I have a 100% different opinion.
Just to watch it don'ts head just separate from its body
and try to leave on its own.

I've tried to warn you don't.
I mean, I care for you as a person so much that I don't.

I care for it.

I appreciate it, but I don't think you understand.
