just I've learned how to drive without wheels in the car really I've done for this job

if that means he's ever fired a gun but I wouldn't bet against him he has you may know I'm as fun

fired a few my lifetime a few yeah and then about driving I started off with one of those
buggy's with horses that's how I learned to drive you know what we're not here to judge you okay I wasn't
gonna go there but you know if you want to take it there I'm done you also joining us is a man
whose beard is epic he is the king of bowling he is Andrew Beckham welcome serve thank you great to be here
did you have you here yeah we ever we do one of these particular episodes it's to review something
and this is no exception today we are reviewing the latest film from director Pierre Morrell
who you may know from a little movie we like to call take it we're he directs a brand new movie called
the gunman sorry Sean Penn Jasmine Trinca have your bar damn Ray Winsstone Mark
Ray Lance and Andrew Selva let's put that there basically here's the story Sean Penn plays
Jim Terrier a man who is basically a mercenary works in the private sector and he's working in the
Congo in the mid 2000s amidst a lot of the political unrest in that country and he's part of an
operation that goes a little too well and because of it he has to flee the continent
fast forward eight years he's back in the Congo working with a humanitarian organization
and somebody basically takes a shot at him tries to take his life he then makes it his mission to find out
who is behind this and why they want him dead don we'll start with you what do you think about
the storyline in this film uh before again we got to think our best friends in the whole world and
you know we really want to think allied especially on this one because Lindsay came back from
South by Southwest just the host of screening yeah her and actually are a great team they do
great work we love them yeah they're our best buddies um the storyline I thought was okay
does it okay yeah because I've seen it that base a kind of core I've seen another movies before it's
just like rebranded it is based on a book by John Patrick Manchette called the Roan Gunman
or H-O-N-E but basically you've seen these things where you have these past people who have these
histories with the government or whatever and then a you know in that kind of lifestyle then
all the blue all of a sudden someone tries to take him out I've seen the plot a few times before
okay it's just rebranded refreshed stuff like that Andrews um I thought it was a little bit
of okay there wasn't a whole lot of foreshadowing to kind of give you a hint of what's coming
up okay and later or maybe I just wasn't paying that close attention to it it was one of those
where I just found it I'm like oh okay I can just literally watch this a little bit of the story
was unveiled more about a pins character as it as it goes went on that that's just what kept
me going throughout it like what's going to happen to him next for me it was very reminiscent
of the old 80s action film without as much cheese like there was no get do the job you know
stuff like that but it it had that 80s action film feel from a predictability
one of my two theories was actually right fairly early on but I it didn't take away from my
enjoyment of the film shoot the kill she actually shoot the real you're welcome in
but I really I mean I liked the storyline you know I don't it's like down said I don't know
they brought anything new to the table but it was just kind of a different version of the same
meal which didn't bother me I thought the look of the film from director Pierre Morrell I think
it fit very well I like I did mention in my written review which is at www.theclubhousepodcast.com
which is our website that there were a couple of artsy fartsy scenes as I got closer to the end
which I thought were a little unnecessary but there's a lot of social consciousness put
into this movie as well because you talk about the Congo and what's going on there and
they're in Barcelona so you have to deal with the whole bullfighting thing and I didn't know
that that was necessary but I thought the look of the film was rock solid I it wasn't too dark it
wasn't too light I mean he knows how to shoot his actors don't I thought the look was
dope unintended in that yeah yeah I don't know say we're lost a whale I thought the look was
fine for what it was bringing back your last point friends Cynthia fellow critic kind of said
the thing that they're glad that they're bringing out this you know injury to this soldiers and
stuff you know trying to bring that and that is part of the plot where he has what what you find
out and I don't I will call this a spoiler alert yeah he does have a post-concussive syndrome
which I appreciate the awareness I don't know that it was necessary to the character personally yeah
I I I didn't mind it I thought it kind of added to the character itself okay and um one thing about
the characters themselves with with Sean Pan and don't get me wrong incredible actor I mean
you go down the list everything from spikoli to win an Oscar with milk I mean he's done some incredible
and if he's learning about you best definitely what's the cool favorite lines in film is

like I'm not talk um I put on here I had trouble seeing pan as a special forces guy see I didn't
I did I put somebody's in just think you have to have him take your shirt off so you can see his
muscles like I didn't have a problem like seeing him as a heavy because he'd worked out so much
now granted he's in his early millions yeah but to me it gave him that more gristle look
then you know what I mean like he looked like he was just a gristly old my personal plan I
thought there'd be other actors to go I thought he could play that role as former special forces
better than him and then nothing wrong with him though yeah exactly well I think they were just
going for someone that really hasn't done it before and and that was he's also a producer on the
film which probably didn't hurt him yeah one thing I noticed about it that I found weird was like
his you mentioned his post-concussive syndrome uh they use that as like like the end of a scene
several times here in the movie um like uh that that kept me entertained because I'm thinking okay
is he gonna be you know on a roof is he gonna be underwater where's he gonna be when he passes out
and I'll be the first to say I am not president of the Sean Penn fan club I'm just I've never
been a huge fan of the dude but I thought he was good in this you know I I wasn't like oh here
we go again with this guy I like enjoyed his performance in the film he didn't overdo it I did kind of
constantly feel like he spent the whole movie going hey I believe him niece and can do this I can do
but I liked him in the film like I did too it did his performance didn't take me out of it I
thought there were some really cool little moments where you know he's trying to be two steps ahead
of the bad guys there's a scene where he gets into his temporary apartment in Barcelona and uh
sees some booby traps and kind of does some things with him and kind of a rivalry right you know
I enjoyed that I really enjoyed some of the scenery there though too I mean it made me go man if I
had money I'd be going to Europe and seeing some of these things it's gorgeous I've been to
Madrid yeah it's breathtaking in my personal opinion and inside the home I just the way they had
everything set up the furniture the decor yeah great what Harvey with Harvey are though
nobody plays mentally unstable better than Harvey air bar damn except me well I said play
nasty off okay I hit him in this film very limited role but very pivotal role
I thought his performance was I mean he's heavy air bar damn yeah I mean what else do you need
to say you know what you're getting with this dude because he's awesome my problem don't give
address Elba second billing if it takes me longer to save his sentence than he's in the dog on film
that was disappointing for me and I don't care if this is a spoiler alert or not you don't see him
until the hour 20 minute mark and this movie's only an hour 55 he was hitting it at at the beginning
of the movie but he wasn't there he was probably there like five minutes total so he's got second
billing in the credits I'm a huge address Elba fan huge I love disguise work I guess he was part
of the selling point for me yeah interpol agent he has some pool he can get second bill
and you could have you but you could have put him earlier in the story and the only thing I
can equate it to is like Tommy Lee Jones in the fugitive yeah that to me seeing that that dynamic
might have might have made it even better for me of him trying to find this guy and his you know his
search or maybe that's just it's that small of a role in the book I don't know but he's only
in or what two scenes three or four but they're short because you first see him basically at the
front of the building when they're talking about the tree houses you know rides ride the climax
ride after the climax and then very it's for you know but my other problem and this isn't
a problem with the performance I felt that the character of any played by Jasmine Trinca
not she did a great job in acting I just felt her character was completely unnecessary
for me it was like this movie doesn't change if she's not in it you think so I agree yeah absolutely
because I agree with myself of course I mean I mean I mean she's like the love of him or whatever
right but she had nothing to do with why he had to leave and why he came back there wasn't even
motivation with her until the last 10 minutes of the film well maybe that's one of the
reasons he went to Barcelona was but he didn't know he didn't know about remember because remember
he just had to up and leave he had no contact with anybody yeah to me I think that she was only
in the movie to keep him from just going out and it's like a spoiler alert him instead of him
going out and taking revenge and then possibly dying like she's the reason for him to be stay alive
I guess but I just I just didn't get that like I really feel that you could take her character
or not again great performance I enjoyed her performance but you can take that character out of the
film and it doesn't change I I disagree because it really adds to the storyline of why he keeps on going
and there were a couple of really interesting false endings where you're like okay this has to be the
big fight scene oh no no we got a little bit more to go right you know and also I think she was in
that movie to build up the tension between ailment of Bardium's character I I don't want to go
too deeply into that because there's spoiler alerts that go along with that and I have my own opinions on that but
I mean is there anything else that we want to talk about as far as this film goes before we give
the final analysis I mean it's enjoyable I can't say I want that hour 55 back I was pleasantly
surprised that I looked at Sean Pan for that long and I wasn't ready to throw up so how many
times did you look your watch that's my question the first time I looked at my watch
because that's like we were 30 minutes in oh no no but it was a good thing okay I was like okay we're
30 minutes in wow I mean the pacing is very very good the the story moves very quickly for a
break to our film because that's one of my my gauges is I want I want to look down on my watch
and think we're at least at this point in the movie and we were actually ahead of where I thought we
were so the pacing's excellent I never thought there were any parts of it that really dragged it all
I I really felt like each scene bled into the next one well I had no problem with the pacing at all
yeah I can't agree with it I was in 64 minute mark when I looked at my watch
I thought the pacing was I thought the pacing was fine I had no problem so that at all I just thought this is
the core movie is stuff I've seen before unfortunately you know and see even that didn't bother me because I'm a huge fan of action films
and like I said it had that 80s feel to it without without the cheese yeah you know which I really dug yeah
I could see that too I just had that mental block of champagne being Mr. Special Forces you don't you don't get any
memorable lines though that's the downfall yeah I'll give you that heartbeat
I didn't bother me though okay all right let's get to the final analysis the way we do the final analysis on this show is we don't give you
Thumbs up thumbs down we don't give you ranking stars ready you're our audience or the Empire you're better than that
what we ask is a two-prong question question number one is would you see this film again if the answer is no
we're done here but if the answer is yes it becomes how would you see this film again would you pay full price would you go to a twilight
would you go to a matinee would you go early morning would you go second run would you go to red box
would you download it on would you stream it from Netflix would you wait for it on cable Andrew will start with you
would you see this film again yes okay how would you be willing to see it again streaming on Netflix as I go to the bed
fair enough just some kind of keep your keep you mind down your day a little bit right don't would you see this film again
probably on HBO and I'd recommend it as red box I'm right there with you I would see it again
just as you know if it's on HBO on a weekend and I got nothing going on I just want to
watch a bunch of guys get beat up you know I want to say the reality though of the I thought the fight scenes
some of them were really great fight fight fight fight fight choreography yeah and realistic fighting too
I thought so it is the gunman starring Sean Pan and a slew of other people
we we got to think everybody's getting one more time thank you so much how I didn't
