My name is Rob. I'm the executive producer of the Clubhouse podcast and I like all
things being equal. It's part of who I am. But I'm not all over this edition
joining me across the desk is the official fact checker of the show and a man
give him a math problem and he'll figure it out. You may know him as fun, don't go
but it's my money. I'm done for it. I'm going to call him don for it. Welcome

and a man that if you need his help he will bring it to you

Well not anymore on Craigslist. Whatever we do one of these
is to review something and this is no exception. It's time to talk to Equalizer 2.

Thank you guys so much. We love our vendors. Our vendors give us the opportunity
to check out movies ahead of time so that we can talk to you guys about them and help you
spend your entertainment dollar wisely. This was originally planned as a
trilogy. So this is the middle chapter of that
as the 80s television series of the same name is
brought into the modern times with Denzel Washington playing Robert McCall.
In this one this this time it's personal. I guess this is what you could say
because in the first one it was more about him
just seeing yeah kind of sort of where this one
he is now embraced the role of being that person that helps people because he
has a certain specific set of chose that nailed that.
So he's kind of embraced this role but ends up getting
personal with it because his as says in the film his only friend played by
Melissa Leo returning from the first one and her husband Bill Paulman
returning from the first one. She shuffles this mortal coil
with some nefarious happenings and so he ends up investigating that which then
forces him to confront his past on multiple levels.
So this is a little bit a little bit different of a situation but kind of the
same basic deal but you learn more about him in this one and the first one which
I actually saw like three days before the screening it's not that I didn't
want to see it it was just one of those I never got around to it.
At one point it was actually on my DVR and then my DVR got two full.
Yeah it was right in that same vein as John Wick where there's so many people that were like
I want to see it but it was already out at theaters or it just went by quick and
so I enjoyed the first one very very much.
I can't say that I enjoyed this one any more or less.
I was kind of right on the part this was a little bit shorter than the first one
but not by much but I thought it was good.

personal this tells more of the backstory.
Kind of like Solo did for the Star Wars.
I thought that was a very interesting comparison you made in your universe.
When you think about it because you get these little tidbits about that.
I don't know I would have connected those two but I could see how you say that.
Well I came because in the like the Star Wars you get the little how he won the
loan. Falcon and all that and then this movie shows the whole story.
This first film you get little tidbits about his past but now this one's really going
into the depth of it.
But let's be clear though.
Unlike Solo this is not a prequel.
Yeah understand that but it's going more into depth about somebody.

He does a good job of playing that same character.
It's like he just never left the set.
Please don't watch it.
Yeah he's one of the greats.
Yes it's the same person.
Yes it has the feel but I think these go in two different
veering directions like i35.
It splits then it meets up again.
Okay.
For those listening in other areas that is a Texas reference.
Yes we have a highway in this town that splits out and it's the weirdest thing.
It splits and comes back together.
It kind of sort of does yes.
I mean I liked it because of that like it gave you enough to be dangerous.
I guess you could say.
I actually think that that's you know I never would have put those two together
but to circle back to what Don's point was.
That solo analogy is really good if you throw out the whole prequel thing about it
but just the idea that you get the cool glimpse of the main this character
and then see more of it.
That's actually a really good thing.
Yeah you know what I'm thinking.
I just like you learn more of his history.
Different crayot words.
Yeah because the first one you just realized through some tidbits that this guy has a past
this one really gets more that you learn more of the past.
You get you get a deeper now I wouldn't say a deeper knowledge
but enough that you're like okay I can see where this is going.
Yeah I learned a lot from this.
I did not know remember the show the series on TV
and also I did not know that this is going to be a prequel.
So I may now learn something by listening if you listen to it.
It's not a prequel.
I mean chill the G that's why I said chill the G.
No not at all but again I enjoy the only thing I'll give this one over the first one
is there's a there's a sequence in the first one
that can only be described as a very Antoine Fuqua
of when he decides he's going to blow up up here.
I was kind of like did we need that?
There's none of that here like everything that he does is necessary.
Everything's moving block.
And just like the first one it takes a little while to get to the main story.
I feel like because you see like two or three different examples of him doing what he does.
Now in this case he's not at the hardware store anymore he's a lift driver now.
Apparently a lift driver has a written a huge check
because they're all over this.
Yeah I really wish there was a bidding war that we knew about.
But there's like two or three examples of just him it's like no we get we know what he does
like we know the bit let's get this thing moving.
I mean it was kind of cool don't get me wrong but I don't know that it was necessary to wait
25 minutes to get to where we were going.
That's one in how long of a movie?
It's two hours two hours and a minute.
Anything is the plot's good it did keep me trust it but I think there was a lot of stuff
where they tried to build in or keep on building.
Yeah there is a payoff but I don't know if the payoffs worth the amount of bill that they had with it.
It was still interesting there was a time that like this is Terence Maloch but yeah and you
could tell with Denzel he's worked with food quite how many times now I mean at least three at
least three if not four because you've got training day and and I want to jump in and say anything
with Denzel directed by Antoine Quico shut up and take my money.
Yeah yeah turning do is incredible.
I mean outside of virtuosity I'm gonna say I just about anything Denzel.
How dare you sir.
It's terrible it's so terrible it's great.
No I'm not gonna give you that but I guess it's probably has something to say to you.
Well Russell Crowe can say whatever you want.
So the spice girl wait no no we're not dawning this thing we are not taking that tangent.
No I don't understand it either I don't think he gets it right here.
This is so good it's bad I mean so bad it's good.
It's spice girls.
Hey guy with the mute button just a hint.
But again I like this I can't say I liked it any more or less than the first one I think it's
right there on par and you know Donovan was sitting right next to me there there's some great
fight sequences in this where I found myself going oh like he does get kind of gangster.
He does and I heard that yeah there's one specific sequence where he confronts the bad guys
and how he gets out of that situation is one of the most gangster things I've seen on film
in a while.
You talk about the very very very beginning?
No no I'll tell you we'll talk about it okay because that does happen also in the very
beginning no no when he faces the main back okay so we'll talk about it later okay but it's
there's a couple of twists that I definitely saw come so they've worked together four times
the one we were missing was the magnificent seven oh yeah I love that film I forgot
food quads erected that so did I but I mean this is just a really really good I I don't
want to say popcorn movie but it kind of sort of is yeah it's a great movie to go see and just
kind of lose yourself for a little while in fact my fantastic pay forward is seeing this movie
right now as we're recording as we're recording all right because as you hear it's available to you
yeah she's actually in the theater right now watching this I mean there's just not much to it
I mean you know what you're gonna get you go in there and you get that yeah and I I saw it years
ago and I had a had to kind of remember a little bit then we are talking about the original
television series though the original with Denzel okay the first yeah okay and then after I saw
part two then fantastically Ford said hey I never saw the original so we watched it together after
I saw the first one and that kind of reminded me of the first one but that's where you got to
different similarities she adds the same guy yet it's it's you could tell us the same sequel or
this part of series but this one I think they veered a little bit but I this one I liked a little
more because I think it got more in depth if you learn more about character that's why I'd
to edge this one over the original okay in a lot of times sequels don't add to the original
no you're right yes sir I have a genuine question relating the first one to this one
uh-huh one of the things I really liked about the original equalizer was the kind of dichotomy
between Denzel and I'm a huge mark for Martin Sokas okay who is phenomenal in everything he does
if you watch into the badlands yeah yeah you get that is there that kind of a counterpoint
in this one because I was not able to attend the screening I can't answer that without spoiling
and okay fair we can talk I yeah we can talk about that ever because if I if I answer that question
for you it will give away things that I don't want to give away and I think I already know what
that is then so this movie has some good cast in it too God's Pullman it also has
yeah yeah my whole thing with with like I understand what's the Leo returning because she's the
catalyst right but Bill Pullman in the first one it was like I got he was even eating hi everybody
I'm Films Bill Pullman good night everybody and I was like what is going on here and and it was
kind of the same thing here yeah but understand but well he was more in this one then but he
definitely was in this one yeah yeah but yeah you got some good I'm seeing you got some good
cast in this and I think they they're up to par on this I mean Pascal who was whiskey from Kingsman
and uh I hate to say it but in the great wall too I like that I enjoyed that film you know if you
want to see him put on a clinic watch Game of Thrones was it season five where he was yeah so
season five he was electric in that show but this is just a fun fun film it's it's not one that's
gonna knock your socks off you'll have fun for a couple of hours if you like the first one you like
this one I like this one a little bit more than the first one and the the the penultimate
uh fight that takes place at the end kind of and we don't want to don kind of gives the minor

that's our website but and you can read it there we're not going to give it here but the way they
work up to this fight and the way this fight is executed it's really it I won't say completely
different but it's kind of different than what you might be used to in a in a fight sequence of
its ilk it means for the free that's certain big fight scene at the end I loved it I know I
said look what they did incredible in that it's it's different enough that keeps you interested I
kept me interested but not different of where I kind of went okay I'm not quite sure how this is
gonna work one of the kills and it's actually kind of neat yeah but and it does make me look forward
to the third one yeah so I feel like we're gonna get the rest of the picture in the third one
any of the things broken to the final analysis when's that next one is it reslated uh they
haven't said yeah they haven't okay they'll probably want to go after or off of their timing from
before it'll be 2022 yeah I mean it's dead cell in on it though I mean there's no he's time for all
the way we do the final analysis on the show we're not going to give you thumbs up thumbs down
uh letter grades numbers bullets anything like that we're gonna ask up the two questions question
number one is would we see this film again if the answers know then we're done here but if the
answers yes then the follow-up question is how far are we willing to go to see it from the best
of the best of the worst of the best here's your spectrum full price at a theater down to a
twilight down to a matinee down to early morning on a weekend down to uh for a second
month of dollar theater down to leaving your house to get it from red box down to streaming on
Netflix down to cable dawn would you see the equalizer to again yeah what how far you want to go I'm
gonna recommend it as a afternoon in the theaters so afternoon some like almost middle of the road yeah
yeah so don would see this again but he's saying it's kind of middle of the road now going
after no I'm saying go in the afternoon and just have some good time get some dinner afterward go
forward it may be possibly even a twilight but I want you to coveted on it and I will agree with
on I would see this again uh I'm gonna say twilight just right right on the press press the
piss if you will I would say go rent the first one right before you go see this one so you can
have a nice and fresh in your mind and then go see it it is Antoine Fuqua it is Denzel Washington
and he does not say I guarantee in this so that will not be in the YouTube montage it is the
equalizer too for insolving yes again we are thinking what Mike and everybody at 11 since
we love our vendors they take care of us so well we want to make sure that they're taking care of
as well because they give us the chance to see movies early so we can talk to you guys about them
