My name is Rob and I in the Executive Producer of the Clubhouse podcast and I want to

Joining me for this particular, how do you say, I guess iTunes is weird?
Is a man who couldn't be happier that he gets to watch most of Madadoras on his television
at least once a week?
You may know him as fun, don't go, but as if I'm a column, don't, I'm going to call him
on for the welcome to show some of that.
Normally when we do one of these, it's to review something and today is no exception.
For this particular episode, we are reviewing a new animated feature directed by Jorge
R. Gutierrez.
It is called the Book of Life.
Diego Luna, Zoe Saldaana, Channing Tatum, Ron Pearlman, Christina Applegate, Ice Cube, Hector
Elizondo, Danny Trejo, Carlos Alos Rocky, and the list goes on and on and on.
You would need to say more about the cast list on this thing.
Wow, yeah.
Well done, you got to see this, so I'm just going to kind of, we're going to do this interview
style.
I didn't get to see this one with you.
So I want you to start by talking about the look of the film.
It's a different style of animation.
And let me do the plot for it, basically.
First of all, thanks to our friends and I, I like integrated marketing challenges.
Everybody for letting us in, let me see this thing, the last night actually.
All right, go.
Go.
The, it starts off where the, Mary Beth played by Applegate.
She is a curator at a museum and some kids come in for a little tour, but they're kind
of like the rebel kids.
She takes them on a special tour to a closed place and there's the Book of Life.
And it's a special book that has all these stories and everything like that.
It was like a night at the museum.
Kind of like the night.
It's the Sonya.
Yeah, kind of like that.
So basically starts off again and starts about the story that's set in Mexico, basically.
And that's where the plot goes through through this one story that's in the Book of Life.
It's set in Mexico where there are three friends, our childhood, Maria, Zoe Saldana.
Joaquin is played by Chantaden or the in Manalo, who's played by Diego Luna.
Okay.
Well, there's, there's seen the beginning where they're kids and they're played by different
children, but then the most of the film was where they're growing up.
Okay.
Now, it's basically your love triangle in a nutshell between the three, the two guys who
try to get Maria's heart.
Okay.
Well, there's two spirits or basically, you know, a kind of like, D.A.T. is or some like that.
Once the ball but played by Ron Proman, who's like the leader of the underworld, okay.
And then there's the good one who runs the book, the, the, the afterlife for the live,
you know, the living afterlife.
There's the forgotten afterlife and the living afterlife and that's put play by K. Del Castillo,
which is let me write down.
Well, they make a little bet and they, they both pick one of the two young males and the one
who gets Maria's heart and Mary's or gets to take over the afterlife when it comes down to it.
Okay.
That's the basic plot.
Okay.
He's kind of D.A.T. is kind of getting in the objecting themselves a little bit as hidden characters,
try to help their male when Maria's heart and be able to marry them.
Okay.
Yeah.
So that's the plot without being really, really spoiler free.
I want to be spoiler free on this, okay.
But it's basically two guys going for Maria's heart set in Mexico.
Now, to the book.
A different style of animation to be sure and a lot of very influenced by the Mexican day of the
dead, which takes place exactly all the way.
A lot into that.
Actually, November 2nd is the dead out down there.
The characters are kind of like in blocks like the dolls.
You know, and that's how they're kind of put in this in this film, in this animation.
The look of the animation was in Craig, the bulk.
And friend of the show Gary told us local animation company.
Yes, here in the Dallas Fort Worth area.
And actually, when you know, we're going to be doing the thing at the Dallas video fest,
this weekend, like we did last weekend, there are heads up to the viewers.
They're going to have a thing on Sunday about the making of this film.
Really?
Yes, I want to talk on Sunday.
Excellent.
But I cannot say enough about the colors, the look, the animation.
It blew me away and you don't hear me.
And CGI, it's not traditional animation.
There are some scenes like at the beginning where the two like deities or spirits are
they're talking at night above the city.
And there's a ball about the play by Ron Perman, who's like the evil and the reward.
He has this like neon grade.
And it just pewed out.
Really?
That colors were incredible.
And we got to see this in 3D.
Oh, did you really see it?
Yes, we got to see this in 3D.
Very nice.
We can't think I'll light enough on that.
The cartoon making the look that colors throughout the film will blow you away.
And you don't hear me talk too much discreet about something like that too much.
That is true.
That is absolutely true.
I was going through the whole thing on I'm because I like scenery.
I like the backgrounds and movies as you know.
Right, right, right, right.
This one was just the colors were vibrant, beautiful, they flowed well.
And just seemed something so new and incredible.
Did it try to overshadow the story or was the story able to hold its own?
It's always able to hold its own.
Okay.
The story flowed well.
It flowed very well.
It's a good plot.
A little bit of predictability, but a lot of stuff you don't see coming.
The plot is very educational.
That's why I think for some of the family, this is a very good film.
When you say educational, do you mean like you get to see it explains a lot about the background
of what they're doing in the Mexican history.
Exactly, they're talking about the data dead and museum and stuff like that.
So there's some educational overtones in there, which I thought were very good by Mary.
Very nice.
Very bad through is the creator.
Every once a while it goes back to Mary Beth and the kids and goes back to the story.
But she puts a lot of history into this, which I thought was very cool too.
I did like the big storyline.
It fell through.
There's a lot of stuff I kind of didn't see coming, which was unpredictable, which was very good.
I do have to warn you, another thing, the comedy.
Incredible, funny, funny, I laughed, I laughed, I laughed and the comedy went all the way through the film.
Very nice.
And it didn't weigh out the plot and the comedy flowed well very good together.
Now I have to warn the Empire.
This film was good for the entire family.
I would not have no problem taking a four-year-old to this.
There are kind of some humor, but you have to be a adult to get it.
You know what I'm saying?
Well, and a lot of you are more modern.
What kind of like Anomaniacs where it's good for the kids, but it's good for the parents.
Exactly, but nothing like, you know, very adult adult.
But there's some good adult jokes that people find in the kids with this kind of still laugh
anyways with it.
So if I had like a niece or nephew that was two years old or four years old, I would have no
problem taking my niece or nephew to this film.
That's good.
Just let you know.
So it's good for the entire family.
The voices.
They fold well.
No one really stood out.
They fit the character.
Good.
You realize like Teach Merin.
You always know that voice.
Big fan of that.
Yeah, big fan.
He's in there in a very actually bands who have like the minor roles here there.
But you don't think of him as Teach Merinot.
A lot of these people I'm thinking about.
I'm like, that was wrong.
I didn't think wrong.
Promon wrong.
You know, boy, no, of course, through, you know, that's the way and everything
I'll send it to the sun there.
But the voices did not over tone.
You realize, oh, yeah, that's ice cube.
But after what, limited or two, you forgot that.
That's ice cube.
That's good.
So the characters were really, I saw him in the castes and I was like, hold on.
But he pulled off.
He plays catamooker, plays his little happy go lucky, kind of, you know, spirit kind of thing.
And that's all I could say without being spoiled or free.
And all the voices for very well.
The one other thing I have to bring up.
The music and the soundtrack.
Really, it, the music was perfect for the moment of what they're doing there.
They even did like their own kind of remix on stuff, really.
Yeah, like, um, um, there's one scene that's on creep.
I am a great radiohead.
Yeah, if I radiohead there, um,
Chantum Tatum's character sings that and in the empty bowl arena.
Really?
Yeah, after kind of bears themselves.
But it sounded good.
It was incredible.
Um, so the music accompanied the film very well.
They had some kind of modern tomes that they put their own little twist to, which was kind of funny.
But still nothing, there was no wrong music for the moment.
But that tells him, Kipper, I cannot say enough about the look in the animation of this.
That's all, that's, that's, that's the big hero for me.
All right, well, then let's get to the nitty gritty of it.
Yeah.
Because it's fine, final analysis.
I mean, you've covered the bases, my friend.
Okay.
All right, before we get there, I didn't any standout performances for you.
There's a couple.
Look at voices, because you know, it's only voices.
But it's still performance.
Yeah, totally.
I'll give you that, um,
cham tating, cham tating, cham tam.
Great actor.
Great actor did the voice very well.
Did the singing on that.
And a guy by, by being a dude, I should just like hate because of who he is.
But because of who he is, I like it.
It's voice rock style.
It was incredible.
Rock style.
Yeah, I, I know when the blue me, well, Ron Proman.
I didn't know that was Ron Proman.
Really?
Yeah.
Excellent.
So the fact that, oh, that was Ron Proman.
That's right.
I, um, I scooped a good for his role as a happy character.
Candlemaker guy who was incredible.
And the one who played the other DAT versus Ron Proman, Kato Castillo.
But we know her for many.
Yeah.
Um, she did, um, let's see, hold on.
No good deeds, uh, which is coming out.
Just, that just came out recently.
Yeah, um, what's this stuff was probably like Spanish stuff like that?
Uh, okay.
She wasn't CSI in Miami.
She did a couple of episodes of the reboot of Dallas.
In Graham and stuff like that.
Um, and also, um, kind of minor role.
But of course, what do you expect from him?
Oh, she was on quite a few episodes of The Weeds.
Yeah.
And the last one, of course,
who plays, uh, Chantaine's character's father.
Hector Elzando.
Pedro Elzando, you know, you're giving her exactly.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, but that's given, you know.
But, um, I cannot really find anything on this film that I did not like.
That's good news.
And nothing that really stood out that bothered me and talking to other critics around me
after the show, everybody loved it.
In fact, the person my, my guess I took, uh, I took, we're a lot to bring through guest to this.
I brought to my supervisor and her mother, her mother said,
I'm taking my niece to this weekend.
Excellent.
You know, so in her niece is like five years old.
So it's family, friendly.
If, um, if you want to do a family movie night,
this is the one to hit for the entire family.
Even if you have five six year old, don't worry about the babysitter.
Take the whole family to this one.
Well, let's get to the final analysis.
Do we do the final analysis on this show?
We don't do grades.
We don't do stars.
We don't do anything like that because that's the empire
as our audience, you are better than that.
We asked two questions.
Question number one is, would you see this film again?
If the answer is no, then we're done here.
If the answer is yes, then we do a follow-up question.
And that follow-up question is, how would you see this film again?
Would you pay full price?
Would you wait for it out of twilight?
Would you go afternoon early morning?
Would you wait for it in second run?
Would you wait for it on DVD?
Would you wait for it on cable?
Done.
Would you see this film again?
Definitely.
Totally.
Well, how would you see it again?
Did everyone out there?
First off, if you have the capability 3D.
Okay.
Or it makes the film.
So are you going to pay a little bit more than you normally was?
And I would see this as a matinee or twilight 3D myself totally.
Recommend it.
Take, take, you got an afternoon.
You got a, you know, kids out,
see this thing, twilight, then go to dinner after the kids will love this thing.
Everybody was clapping at the end.
It looks amazing.
And I'm really kind of, I'm kind of bummed I didn't get to see it with you.
Yeah, but I can recommend this enough.
