You heard me, you heard me correctly.
My name is Rob, I'm the executive producer of the clubhouse podcast, and I want to do
the froggy to go a court in.
But I'm not alone for this particular episode, joining me across the desk as he tends
to do from time to time is my co-host, and a man that knows a little bit of something
about cultural differences.
Just a few, well, hold on, just remember, this is going to air after something else
happens.
I know, so we have to hold on to all that.
Also joining us is the official fact checker of this show, and a man who's been
called sick at least once in his life, and probably not the first time today.
You may know him as fun, don't go, but his mom and even don't forward, I'm going to call
him, don't forward, welcome sir.
Give me psychologist, I had as a kid growing up.
I believe the over under is 16.
That'd be a good betting guy.
Oh, fair enough.
Are any of them currently sitting there?
Whatever we do, one of these things it is to review something, and this particular episode
is no different.
It is a brand new film, not a lot of times have you said the words director and Michael
show Walter, in the same sense, but he directs a brand new film.
You could call it semi autobiographical, it's called the big sick.
For we start this whole thing.
Yes, sir.
Oh, we have some new friends of the show.
New friends of the show.
We love the friend.
We got to think.

Now this is a little bit different because we're having to record this in between two
different screenings.
When you and I have already gone, Chad's going to a screening, he has not seen it as
of yet.
Okay, so we're going to be kind of feeling him in a little bit, but he will be doing
a written review after he watches it at www.theclubhousepodcast.com, which will be at
our website.
It still is our website.
It doesn't matter.
But the reason we're doing this now is so that we can get the recording out in a timely
manner because Chad's not going to have really any time between when he sees it and when
it comes out for us to do an audio.
He can still get the written done, but we want to get this done as well.
So here's what you need to know.
Kumi Al-Nanjiani, I hope I got that right, I hope I know that, is a guy he's on Silicon
Valley, is where you would know.
He's also a great stand-up comment.
Love that show though.
This is loosely, I wouldn't say loosely, pretty solidly based on the story of he and his
wife Emily and their courtship.
He is his family, devout in their religion, her family, the all-American family, from
the Carolinas, from the Carol, she is her mom, from Carolinas, played by the Great
Holly Hunter.
Yep.
And from Pakistan.
He's from Pakistan and her father played by Ray Romano and Emily played by Zoe Kazan.
That's about as deep as I want to get into this.
Because watching the trailer and then going and seeing the film, the trailer is a very
very, it's an overview of what's going on here.
I mean, by the time this film was over, I was like, wow, there's a lot going on here.
Yes.
So we want people to experience this for themselves.
Now Chad, you kind of know, you don't have to be dangerous.
So I really don't want to, I don't want to pull out of this more than I want you
because I want you to be able to see it when you get to see it.
Let me first of all say, this movie is amazing.
It's right at two hours long.
Didn't seem like it.
It's not seem like it at all.
This movie is so much better than my expectations.
I was expecting a fun little rom about, no, no, no, it is.
Not only a fun little rom, it's so much more than that.
I watched the trailer, like you told me afterwards.
Yes.
And it's the two-minute trailer on IMDB.
It talks about the dating and the nail-ness, and that's about it.
Right.
That's why it's called the Big Sick.
Because there's a lot of, but it really, it really goes into a lot of deeper issues
beyond that.
And that sick, really gets in depth.
It's all I really want to say.
It's very free.
Right.
Because we really want people to experience this film for what it is.
I love this movie so much.
It's, it's witty, it's reverent, it's respectful to the material.
Because again, this is autobiographical.
And the fact that Camille actually does play himself in the film, I'm very interested
and he'll be here in the Metroplex this week.
Hopefully we'll get some of our friends to get some interviews done with him because we
can't because it's during the day and we stay jobs.
But I really am looking forward to hearing his perspective on this whole thing of, really,
I mean, he literally had to relive this again.
Because it was his life to begin with.
And it was kind of neat, well, I'm seeing it with you because you didn't know if I'm
not mistaken that it was, that was a true story until the credits ran at the end.
Well, I saw the trailer and he goes, this is a story about me or something like that, you
know.
And I didn't really think of it into that much until I really, until you see at the
end.
And it is a story about him in the story of it, according his wife.
And Zoe Kazan has really good chemistry with him, which I was really a big fan of.
I'll tell you who really, really surprised me in this.
Ray Romano.
Yeah, because you're used to just, I'm Ray, you know, the eye sage and he's still, he's
still, I mean, that's his voice, it's not like he's doing a bit.
But he's able to use who he is and put more depth to it playing her father.
He really shows some range in this.
I was really impressed, which really strikes me is a huge surprise because he doesn't
really strike me as the kind of guy that would show a lot of emotional depth.
It's, it's not really his forte.
Don, what do you think about that?
Well, I think that, like you're saying with Romano, he does go into different
rail.
Hunter, she, she probably hunkers, Holly hunkers.
Yeah, she plays her part perfectly, and she makes sure that you know that she's
from North Carolina.

I put up my review when it comes to the acting, Camille, or how do you pronounce
who my, Camille.
He plays, yeah, he plays what you think of from Silicon Valley.
He fits that, it's the same kind of role character mannerism from Silicon.
But like you're saying, Hunter, with, uh, here, even, uh, with Bryant, or one of my favorites
was Kurt, uh, Bronehonder, who plays the Romate, uh, Bronehonder plays Chris, Chris, the
Romate.
80 Bryant from Sirenite Live in this, these people burn them, there's a great comic.
So our fit for the role, whoever did casting on this, did an incredible job.
That's why I put them in my review, because these people, you felt, were made for the
part.
Or, of course, the lead, because that's the story about him, but Hunter being that kind
of mom who's kind of up front me, whatever, in Romano being, well, whatever, I'm just
ready.
It really fits the parts, the casting, I think, was perfect for this film without
a doubt.
Uh, you're, you're casting department, you're casting assistant, uh, Sarah, Sarah
Coney, which you're casting assistant, and you're casting associate, Alice, and Kirchner.
I will agree with you.
I think everybody, there was really good work by everybody in this, and it wasn't like,
nothing felt forced.
You know what I mean?
Yeah, everything was dead on, there's just nothing about this, like, you really,
I really thought that the people playing his family were his family.
I mean, they really did that good of a job working together.
In one thing, I thought, I like, really liked about this movie.
The look was good.
It was not, it really shook Chicago without saying, we're Chicago.
We're showing the lake and all that stuff.
So the scenery, I thought, was really good, the look of the film was good, but the thing
I really liked about this film is it's a serious subject and how he could make fun of
his true life courtship and add comedy to the story.
But this story has a great mix of comedy, which goes throughout, but it's a good mix
with the serious and emotional subjects.
There's a lot of twist and turns coming through this thing.
So it has a good balance of all those kind of emotions in this film.
And there's some things where they go overboard or nothing's safe.
Oh, absolutely.
All we're going to say is the 9-Eleven jokes because it's in the trailer.
That's awesome.
When he talks 9-Eleven, oh, no, it's one of the most awkward moments in the entire film.
Did that really happen?
So it even had a kind of South Park, he would not then say for sacred, but it's still good
and emotional.
It's not unoblastly.
It's framed well.
So it's not where you go, oh, come on real, like, you have to see the film to understand
what we're saying.
Yes.
But it's, this is an excellent film all around.
I was a big fan.
One of the quickest and credit scenes I've ever seen, it was like, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom,
it's good night everybody.
It's good night everybody.
Yes.
Okay.
You'll be seeing these high like, you know, these big production films and credits take
about 15 minutes and then not this one.
But, you know, then, then we watched on TV, they just roll through like on that original
teaching song.
We'll be where it goes 100 miles an hour and takes five minutes, well, that's what took us
five minutes.
But it went slow.
But this has great hard, it's, it's very well written, it's very well executed.
There's nothing about this film.
I didn't absolutely love.
Is there any questions, Chad, that you have as you're getting prepared to see this?
Where would I know her?
She is a producer.
You know what, Zoe Cassandra, they're real Emily.
Yeah.
Emily is a producer and writer.
Zoe Cassandra is one of me.
Let me, I got that for you right here.
She was in, what if, fracture the Anthony Hopkins?
Let's see, let's see, I don't know what she was in a TV, I mean, she was called
Olive Kidridge on HBO, let's see the monster.
She was in board to death, which is also on HBO.
It's complicated with the, like, Baldwin revolutionary road.
That was the Leo de Caprio film.
She played Ruby Sparks and Ruby Sparks.
That was at HBO film, if I'm not mistaken.
That was at HBO film, that was an independent film.
She was also in happy thinking more, please, another, she's got a lot of independent work.
Okay, so she's kind of like one of these do up and coming hit girls.
She has a lot of credits.
See, I don't, I don't see her as an hit girl.
I see her as one of these people that I think is just, she works steadily and I think
the more that, the more time goes by the more you're going to see her.
She was also in our brand as crisis.
Oh, yeah, okay.
But she, she had one role in 2003, then in 2007, started really kicking it and then 2009,
13.
So she, she, maybe, it doesn't year two, takes the year two off and keeps going back and forth.
Okay, so.
All right, anything else, so we get to the final analysis?
No, no, I think what you're talking about is, all right, if you're joining this
for the first time, the way we do the final analysis on this show, we're not going to give
you a thumbs up thumbs down.
We're not going to give you letter grades, numbers, you know, four balloons or whatever.
We're going to ask two questions, question number one is, would you see this film again
if the answer's no then we're done here, but if the answer's yes, the follow up question
will be, how far are you willing to go to see it again?
That will kind of gauge how much we enjoyed the film.
It is from best of the best to worse of the best, full price of the theater, Twilight,
Matt Nay, early morning, second run at the dollar theater, actually leaving your house
to go get it from red box, streaming it on Netflix or just waiting for it on cable.
John, would you see this film again?
Oh, that's a definite, how far are you willing to go?
I'm going to recommend it is either the Twilight or full price of the theater.
So you're right there on the edge.
Yeah, yeah, this was really good, surprisingly good, very emotional everything.
I'm going to agree with you, I definitely would see this again, but I'm right there on the edge.
I think as we were recording this, I did see a headline that it did good business on
it's limited weekend.
Oh, really, so it's called the big sick, go check it out, directed by Michael
Showwalter.
