So, whatever we do one of these things, it is to review something and this one is
no particular exception.
Terrence Malik is back kids.
Oh, God.
And we're going to talk about it because it is called song to song.
Well, we got to, even though it's Terrence Malik, we got to make our best friends.

All right, I'm in a great marketing.
Gotta pick Ashley, the whole crew for the invite.

Terrence Malik.
This is the man that gave us last year night of cups.
He is known for not really working with a script.
He's known, and this is true story.
This is all true.
This is all documented fact.
He is known for kind of letting his actors do kind of whatever they want.
Here's what you need to know about this film.
It's about people who need people, no, it's wrong, it's wrong thing.
Set against the backdrop of the Austin Texas music scene.
Ryan Gosling, Rooney Mara, Michael Fassbender, Natalie Portman, Kate Blanchett, Holly
Hunter, Val Kilmer, all in this thing.
Kind of like the last one, we're head about everybody under the sun.
Kate Blanchett was in that one, yeah, you know.
So here's the thing.
This film was made five years ago.
What?
It's two years to make the original cut of this film was eight hours long.
This is a true story.
This is all documented fact.

Now, the cut that we saw, or that I saw, I was dangerous with me, poor guy, the king
of bowling himself, was two hours and ten minutes.
Oh boy, I don't even know how to say this.
I like to think of myself as someone who has a certain level of culture to him.
Yeah, I'll give you that.
I'll give you that.
Like the thing that I'm a student of film, been watching movies my whole life.
I'm, I tend to be very knowledgeable on all things pop culture.
I really don't know what was going on here.
I really, really don't.
Here's what I've gathered.
Fassbender is a guy who is a very prolific producer, all right.
Gosling is a guy that wants to follow in his footsteps.
Rooney Morris character used to be his assistant, but they're in some kind of a weird
love triangle, which then involves Natalie Portman, who was a waitress at Fassbender meets
and Kate Blanchett, who Gosling meets at a party.
Holly Hunter is Natalie Portman's mom.
You'll notice I haven't used character names.
Yeah, we don't want to get the Empire lost enough, like there are.
You know why I'm not using character names?
Why?
Because I didn't know what their names were until the next day when I wrote the review.
Marvelous fame, Gosling was BV, BV.
I got a big bag of nothing.
Like I was just like, oh, maybe they're just, because remember, in the night, if
cops, a lot of the actors just use their names.
It's like five.
It was just assuming totally wrong, totally wrong.
They actually had character names and in some cases improv is okay, yeah, but when you're
giving your actors and I think that's why a lot of actors just line up to work with
malice because they really get to stretch themselves a little bit and get to do with
characters what they want to do.
I get that.
But when you have no script at all, and according to IMDB, they were even filming the
actors as they were in their cars going from set to set, just in case they picked up
anything they could use in the movie.
It's two intersecting love triangles, obsession and betrayal set against the music scene
and Austin Texas.
Boy, was that the plot?
Could this be like your nightmare?
Yes?
Can this be literally one of those like on his last film, where it was, it could have
been a 10 minute short or a 30 minute short?
I don't know.
I really don't know, like, oh, you know, it's just a long story.
That's it, right?
I don't even know if you know that.
I will say this, there's a lot of crying.
Almost every actor in this film, at some point, we were crying.
We talking this, the actors are the people in the audience.
No, the actors.
I didn't have the audience.
We've got it.
I was completely lost in this film because there are points where I think the timeline
jumps, but I'm not really sure because in 70% of it's done in voiceover.
Oh, no, not like, because again, you have no script, so you have to do something to
try to tie everything together, and let me just say it with him for a minute.
I'm trying it, I'm trying it.
I met you in Austin, we fell in love, there were concerts.
It was amazing.
That's the tone in most of the film, in the voiceover, period, who does the voiceover?
The actors do their own voiceovers.
What?
But because they're narrating, I guess it's their inner dialogue, but everything sits
right about here.
I was waiting at some point for someone to say, CK1, a fragrance for everyone, available
now.
Like, that's where it's sat, it's just like we talked about night of cups.
It's like one long Calvin Klein commercial.
But the difference between this and night of cups, and if you can't see Don, Don's eyes
are puffing up because he's laughing so much, the difference between this and night
of cups is I was more prepared because it had been for ever since I'd watched a
mallet film.
Yeah, I haven't even seen it.
The tree of life is, tree of life.
I've been got Oscar nominated, but I was a little more prepared, so I was like, okay,
this is going to be a thing.
Yeah, and Andrew and I both said, we are prepared for this to be a thing.
We're okay with it.
Yeah.
And it was a thing.
And when I say there's a lot of crying, there's a lot of crying, but of course, ups
up tears running down faces, and I was like, I would feel for you if I knew what the heck
was going on.
Why you're crying?
Why are you crying?
Because you're in this film?
I don't know.
I just, you know, you're talking about the Castro, the audience watching this thing.
Oh, like, I mean, it kept my attention for the most part because you also had since
it takes place around the Austin music scene, they're like the Red Hot Chili peppers
in this.
Iggy pop was in this, Patty Smith is in this, the arcade fire is in this.
So there were people, I was like, oh, I know who that is.
Tegan and Sarah, which is a great band, they were in this.
But I have no clue what's going on.
So when this ended, you just like, huh?
What?
When it ended, I was like, this is exactly what I was expecting.
Now, you haven't asked me the most important question down there, should it be the
watch?
It is the watch question, hold on for those of you that are just tuning in for the
first time.
Welcome.
We tend to gauge my enjoyment of a film on when I look at my watch for the first time,
because I'm a very time conscious person, just who I am, well documented in 45 minutes
is your record.
That's the record.
45 minutes.
And that's the longer it goes before I look at my watch, the better off the film is
because I'm not paying attention to the time.
Is it under five minutes?
No.
Five to ten.
The upper range of that.
Seven minutes?
No, ten.
Ten minutes.
Ten minutes.
That's the watch gauge in this film.
That was not a cop, it's two.
Really?
Okay.
You know these things.
You're watching it every five minutes.
And you know me.
Oh, pretty much.
Tell me well enough to know that I always like to find the silver lining.
I like to find the good and things.
It's who I am.
Would you like to know what the silver lining in this film is?
I think I got an idea, but if you are the kind of person where time goes too fast, this
film will help you fix that.
Okay.
Because it drags so bad.
I mean, I really felt like I was trapped in some weird time space continuum crosshairs.
Because two hours feels like two days in this film.
Because it's ten minutes in.
You're already looking at the watch.
You're going, oh my god.
I got an hour fifty left.
No, no.
At ten minutes.
Yeah.
I've got an hour twenty left.
I thought you said so.
No, I'm sorry.
It's two hours and ten minutes.
So you have two hours left.
I have two hours left.
God.
Public school math.
I apologize.
And I'm just, everybody's home.
I'm just looking at Andrew.
And Andrew's looks at me every once in a while.
I was like, okay.
Here we go.
We're here.
It's just happening right now.
It was just like we did a night of cuts.
Was counting something more, more enjoyable.

I just have to say this means there was, yes, there was, there was, there was,
there was, just keep track of it.
There was a yes.
Okay.
Number was tracked.
Yes.

But you said the audience, you said, bring up the audience, we'll get into the audience later.
There was quite a bit of chatter going on in the theater, which normally would bother
me.
This not so much because I can't say I disagreed with the chatter that was going
on around me.
And that was more enjoyable than the film.
I wouldn't say more enjoyable.
It complimented the film.
But again, it's Terrence Malik.
So you have to understand what you're going into with Terrence Malik as Terrence Malik.
What do you keep writing a check?
And so somebody's writing a check.
Movies are going to get me.
Now I firmly believe that there might be some film students out there that could probably
use that cash for a better film.
So it's just kind of like one of those home movie things that is like a home movie at a dating
and a single snack at a bar with that be even more of a plot than this thing.
I mean, like when we're, I gotta bring up not a couple.
It just is what it is.
I mean, that's the whole thing with this film.
It just kind of is what it is.
Now, the title is mentioned in the film.
I had about the three minute mark.
We will be together.
Moment to moment.
Song to song.
Okay, there's a title.

Thank you for tying it up for me.
I'll be here for the next two hours and seven minutes.
I'm surprised.
I thought you watched gauge be five to seven minutes.
If I really wanted to give this film a chance.
I wanted to give this film a shot that it deserves.
And then I let him come out and watch him go to here.
Oh dear.
I feel your pain.
This time I actually feel your pain.
I do.
Because I've been through it.
And unfortunately.
But there's going to be people out there that are going to think this is the greatest
movie of all time.
There's going to be people out there, especially in the Austin community because Austin
loves them some Austin.
Yeah.
Better give me like this crazy movie of the scene.
It's all about Austin.
It's great.
It's a love story.
It's a double love story.
I just, it's those moments where I hate to put my critic hat on.
But I feel like I have to be fair.
I have to be honest about this.
That's what they want.
And as they like to say on our local sports radio station, not that great buddy.
Because she got BV, I'm BV, I'm in love with her.
Well I'm speaking to you.
I'm speaking to the Gosling, speaking to Gosling.
I am calling potential shenanigans on La La Land because of this film.
Really?
Yes.
Go for it.
This movie was filmed five years ago.
Okay.
Remember the big deal about La La Land where it was like Gosling to ever played the
piano he learned how to play these songs for this movie.
He played the piano on his movie.
Now granted, the two times he played the piano, I think they may have just shown him a
couple of chords.
But he knew those chords.
And he had five years to learn, or four years, because just saying potential shenanigans
on this.
And he played the guitar though.
He played the guitar very well.
I will say that.
Go ahead.
If he got it.
I'm runned out.
And I'm a love with these brothers, you didn't even know.
No, no, she actually was in love with Cook.
Okay.
She was with fast-bender.
Yeah, if you're good.
The emotion.
No, you're stuff.
No, you're stuff.
I'm so close enough.
I think I already got that.
So let me ask, would this get my uncubbed and dentist award, or if you're in Somniac?
You know, I'm not willing to speak for you.
I will miss this.
There is a greater than zero chance of that, yes.
Which I think can pretty much take us to the final analysis.
We might have two questions, maybe for those of you joining us for the first time, I'm

We don't give you thumbs up, thumbs down.

Question number one is, would you see this film again?
The answer is no.

But for everybody else, you've been warned, you have been duly warned, because this
is a rough deal.
Even though, you know, I feel your pain and I feel so hurt, I was doing double-duty, and
we had to buy and conquer that as we did, night, we, you know, we don't blame him.
We still want to thank our best friends, ally, and even greater marketing, Ashley and
everything.
It's not just a fan of everybody there, and again, couldn't be more wonderful people.
We were giving us the opportunity to see films and advance.
