My name is Rob and I am the executive producer slash ring master of this particular
circus and like we said normally we are your one stop shop for all things sports and
entertainment but tonight things are a little bit different.
But before we get to all that let me introduce you to the other people in the room right
across the desk for me as he tends to be in his little cubby hole.
Is a man who has slayed many metaphorical dragons in his time.
He is Chad.

Also joining us is the official fact checker of this show and a man who is not afraid to throw
in a assassin over a cliff if he has to.
You may know I'm as fun don go but his mom and even don Ford I'm going to call him

We are here to review a movie.
We always review things on our iTunes and Closions.
Today or tonight or whenever you are listening to this we are going to review for you
the brand new movie called 7th Sun.
Long Jeff Bridges and Julian Moore.
Basically here's what you need to know.
If you are the 7th Sun of a 7th Sun in this particular fantasy realm we are dealing
with, you tend to be part of an order of which hunters.
Say to say it's like a birthright or okay.
So Jeff Bridges is Gregory and he needs help hunting down the queen of the witches
as a tour played by Julian Moore and he has this problem with apprentices kind of dying
on him.
So he enlist the help of a young man named Tom and he goes about two and about a week's
time to get him ready to take on this witch queen before the blood moon is full because
if that happens then that's the ballgame kids pretty much.
So done.
First off we got to think Mary Ann and Ashton from Universal Marock for inviting this
to this film directed by Sergei Bodrov based on a book which I might be kind of interested
in but let's start with the direction and look at the film chat.
That's cold dude.
What?
That's how we always start.
We talked about this in the way home because we literally have the people listening to
this podcast.
I don't know we talked about in the car in the way home.
We literally just walked into door from this thing and it's still kind of going through
my system like chili.
It had a good look to it.
It seemed to be competently directed I'm trying to find what else this director has done.
Oh geez yeah I'm looking at his I'm looking at his resume nothing I've ever heard
of mongol the rise of Genghis Khan is the first thing that comes up.
I do enjoy their fine barbeque we're not talking about the Genghis Khan okay I'm sorry.
I mean it's it's the kind of it's the kind of film that kind of shares a look with a
lot of films of its ilk.
They all start to look fairly similar.
There or no.
But if you're just asking me for my opinion on how it looked it looked fine.
It looked fine.
It looked like people were miserable when they were filming it because it was raining a
lot.
Even though there were in Canada I don't know what it was trying to pass for but but did
you feel for for the film for the theme and the mood of the film did you feel that it was
directed properly?
Yeah yeah I mean it's it didn't look like it was directed by a total roub.
He looked like he knew what he was doing.
All right done start off I for the basic direction this film is what what do you expect?
It's the sci-fi the fantasy the medieval times the denges the dragons kind of thing which
isn't going to be in my written review which is on the clubhouse podcast.

But for the movie what do you expect it's what I expected out of it in I wasn't disappointed
from what to expect from this you know sci-fi you know the fights the big stunt you know
with the dragons and the swords and all that in the nights the look I loved I love the look of
the film you looked at the the natural scenes they're like when he comes to meet this you
apprentice for the first time that lake scene wasn't credible there are some beautiful
nature shots in this thing I think he nailed it on that shot in Alberta can yeah beautiful
area up there and then I like the medieval look I thought it was pretty historically
correct for what it was because we've been there so many yeah but there's a sea
Jewish is there yesterday yeah but you know you know a lot of it was CGI but still I really
like the look because I think it was he tried to make it historically correct which I think he
really nailed it on and that that's a big thing with me the big plus from this film for me and
that's one of the very critical about it is I love the nature shots there was a ton of
beautiful nature shots there for me I thought visually it was par like there was
nothing bad I could say there was nothing you know outstanding I could say I thought visually
the film was cool you know I've seen far worse visuals reference to health sequences and spawn
but I mean recycled CG for mortal combat I just really thought visually it was good I wouldn't
say that you know this director is going to be having you know studios beating his door down
for future projects but I don't feel like he's going to be shunned either no he's no U.A.
bull and and I'm just going to I'm not even going to bury the lead here and it's something
that you and I talked about in the car chat I struggled to find great things to say about this
film but I struggled to find bad things to say about this film it's a very weird conundrum for
me conundrum there's your five dollar college worth for today but and I really kind of want to
hold off on on to me the biggest my biggest issue with the film because I want to hold on to that
for a minute performance wise everybody did what they could I really think that maybe Jeff
Bridges decided he was going to do enough accent for the rest of the cast and the rest of the
cast could just play it straight um you needed subtitles for you remember the remember the weird
alianca vixong smells like nirvana yeah it's hard to talk with marbles in your mouth
hmm yeah that's kind of what this wasn't I don't know
especially since or we're used to seeing medieval films done with British accents
it's just it's like state wall or something yeah but nobody did that in this film so why
he didn't try to fake it yeah it's you know it's kind of like saying that you grew up in Paris
Texas do you have a Boston accent when is it transforming to bad maybe it's really good they
place in Canada, but I don't know why he's he made that choice, especially since nobody
else including Kit Harington from Game of Thrones. Yeah, that's what really threw me. I'm like
he didn't even have an accent. We know he's British, so it was just an odd choice for me.
So it's been Barnes apparently. If I could add on that, please do. He, when I was watching
the film, it really sunk in and said, you know, your mind's mean from the Batman films,
the Bane accent. That's all I could say. That's 60 years at 80 to at age 60.
Good man. No, he dragons for it. Yeah, but at a Bane at age 60, that's what he reminded.
That's one thing that really irking on the film was his accent. He tried too hard. It got
annoying after a while. The other thing was just to enjoy and more and this kind of role, I did,
it just kind of didn't set in for me. She's a great actress, done some incredible stuff. She's
good. I'm going to do this and her stand, she'll put my money on her to win.
But she's done some incredible roles, but I just can see her in this film as this role.
That, those are my two down, my two big downfalls. I'd say when it comes to acting.
Yeah, I didn't mind Julian more. I kind of like, I like seeing her in a non indie film every once
and again, where it's not like, I want to go to a Julian more performance and not feel worse
about myself when I leave. Well, you know, she worked my nerves in Jurassic 2, you know,
in the lost world. She was annoying in that. Now, I thought of the girl played Alice,
Alicia Vicander. I thought she did pretty good for the role. And she, like, hope care nightly
is not listening, but she's going to be my second future. She seemed to be carrying more emotional
weight to her than just about anybody else involved in it. She's a good on that role. I mean,
it's just, I didn't hate Julian more, it's just kind of weird up front scene, but thinking
again, the kind of you stifers in that role. She was the girl from a royal affair, which is a really
weird movie. She was also an Anna Karen, the newest version of Anna Karenna. She's going to be in
the reboot of the man from Uncle, coming up this year. Wasn't Karen nightly, also in Anna Karen.
I can add a defer. Yeah, she played with the lead role. She played kitty in Anna Karenna.
I thought she did a great job. You know, she's not somebody's good. She's also going to be in the
new version of Ex Machina this year. Wow. So she's got some stuff on the horizon. You're going to
know that name very, very soon. In Ben Barnes, I thought he'd be pretty good for the lead role
considering of her the best supporting or whatever. He didn't get for the role I thought.
Jen, oh, oh, and we're going to get to that here in a minute. I guess we're just going to go into
the actual story itself. This movie for me suffers from something I like to call Stargate syndrome.
Stargate was what? 89, 90 somewhere in there. Oh, no, no, no, no. I was at, I was living in Florida.
So I want to say, I want to say, I was in the military when it came out.
But my problem with Stargate was it needed to be an hour longer.
It was an 1994 Stargate. Oh, 90. I was just all my way out. Yeah. Wow. That's for a year.
It needed to be an hour longer. I felt like there was so much more story Stargate could have told
that wouldn't baby enjoy the film 20 times more. And that's how I feel with seven sun and I
know, sir, you disagree. But for me, it was just kind of like, here's these characters go.
We're going to show you pictures in a book. Here we go. This is what we're going to do. And I really
wanted to know more about the characters in this film. I kind of even felt that you could have
shuffled some scenes around a little bit and told more backstory that way. Well, if you want to
give me more character development, I'll take that any day. If you want to spend an hour to give
me more character development, I'm cool with that. But you're going to have to trim it off the back end,
because there's no way this needed to be a two and a half hour three hour film. I'm not saying
because it's right at an hour 40, which is about about how long it needed to run. I'd have been okay
with solid two, maybe two, 15. Just because I always say bad clock management on this thing.
Well, because here's my thing. I wanted to care more. I wanted to be more emotionally invested in
what was going on. More than just, oh, these are the good guys. These are the bad guys.
It's like the, you know what I mean? Yeah. Like the other witches and warlocks. It's just like who are
they? Oh, yeah. They're just like, they're being checked. And then here we go. Then you see what
they can do in boom, boom, boom, boom. You know, even with the issue with this mother, I'm just going to leave
it at that. Yeah. It just, it felt like it was shoehorned in there. Like it was put in there as an
afterthought. It almost felt like the producers went this thing can't go more than an hour 45. Yeah,
it's like they were put on time. And if you, I think if you maybe would have taken the cuffs off a
little bit, I think you could have made a better film. Yeah. And where, you know, tell me more about
the lineage of these people. Tell me more about why a seventh son of a seventh son is a thing.
Tell me more about this society that Gregory comes from. Right. More than just the kids
staring at a tapestry and giving basically reading to you what's on the tapestry. And it was a
disc rips, you know, cliff notes version of that. You know, I was like, yeah, that's, that's,
that's no way of telling a backstory of why these guys are doing what they're doing. Where it came
from, why it started, who started it, why he's the only one left. Well, and then there's a scene
later on when all of the, all of the bad guys attacked this city and they go up against somebody.
I don't want to give anything away. But that even took me a couple of minutes to go
hold on, wait a minute. Oh, yeah, that's who that is. Yeah. You know, it just, it took me a minute
to connect the dots. And I think if you had taken more time to tell more story, a lot of the stuff
to me would have fallen in place easier and more organically. When they attack the city,
that's where you really learn more about the warlocks and other witches in the warlocks,
right then and there, then the rest of the movie and it's in about two minutes. Right. And you
should, and you should have known more about that before that point is what I'm saying. Like,
you know, I agree. And it's not like they didn't have time to develop this story because this
thing was supposed to come out two years ago, two years ago. Was it two years ago? Yes, it was a
religious culture for, according to IMDB, it was a religious culture for release February 15th of 2013.
But it got moved back to October 18th to complete post-production. Then they moved it again
when the whole thing was legendary, fell apart with Warner Brothers because they were going to
distribute it originally. So then when they partnered up with Universal, Universal pulled the film
again and then this is a book series. Yeah. And November of 2013 it was announced that they were
going to release it this weekend. And it's, and it's competing with Jupiter ascending from seven
sun's former distributor. So they're going to head to head with you. It's, this is a weird thing for me.
Because again, I can't bring myself to find bad bad things to say, but I can't bring myself to find
good good things. With this castage, we should have gotten a better product than we got.
I can say that I enjoyed the film. It was a fun hour 42. Yeah. I didn't, I didn't hate it.
But I was, I was really wanting more from this. And I just felt like it was, it under delivered.
For me, it's what I expected. And I thought delivered from what I expected. It wasn't like I had my,
you know, my standard set totally high on this, like the final hunger games or something like that,
you know. Well, you know, when, when you have no real expectations going in,
you, I guess you really can't be disobeyed. I thought I was a fun run, just like Rob said they
could have done more character development in Jeff Bridges. I'm sorry, I love you. You're a great
actor, but dude, your accent was not good. It was just weird for me. It was just like,
it was like they had a meeting. And Jeff's like, I think we should do an accent. Everybody else went,
no, he's like, you know what? I'm doing it anyway. It was just weird for me. Because I remember seeing
the trailers for RIPD and not being able to hardly understand him there. And it sounded like just a,
I don't know. A European eyes version of that accent. And he's playing basically the same kind of
guy, somebody that's hunting down supernatural character. I didn't have a problem understanding him.
Well, I just, I did a couple times. That's going to bring us to the final analysis. The final
analysis on this show is different from other shows you've heard. We don't give you thumbs up
thumbs down. We don't give you grades. We don't give you stars. We don't give you scale of one to 10,
because our audience, the empire is better than that. The way we do a final analysis on this show,
is it's a two-prong question. Question number one, would you see this film again if the answer is
no, then we're done here. If the answer is yes, then it would be, how would you see this film again?
Would you see it in first run? Would you see it at a Twilight show? Maybe Matt name maybe early morning?
Maybe second run. Maybe red box, maybe Netflix, maybe cable. We don't know because brands
why we're going to ask the question. Donald will start with you. Would you see this film again?
Actually, yeah, I, I still kind of enjoyed it. I'd still recommend it. I would probably see it
myself on something like the HBO wheel, but I would recommend it as 3D as a Matt name.
I think it's worth this 3D. If you got 3D was fun. Yeah, it made it funer.
And that's why I wouldn't say full prize 3D at night, but if you get Matt and A3D discount,
that's how to recommend it. And that's right. He said funer and he's owning that.
Yes, I am. Chad, would you see this film again? No. No, really, just flight, no.
If it happens to come on, you know, TV, I might give it a second look just to see if maybe there's
stuff I missed. And maybe I'll get a better, better experience out of it the second time around,
but I'm in no rush to see it. Would you recommend it in any kind of level?
You guys seem to like it. So I couldn't, I wouldn't, not HBO, but you know, I was like,
if you want to give it a shot, maybe you'll get something out of it that I didn't, you know,
I would tell her, I wouldn't tell somebody to avoid it because they might like it, whereas I didn't.
I would see this film again. I think I agree with Don from the standpoint of
if it was on HBO on a Saturday night and I had some popcorn popped and
really didn't have anything on the agenda and it came on. I'd be like, you know, what I wouldn't
mind sitting through this again. I don't, I mean, I enjoyed the IMAX 3D presentation,
especially bad, but that's the beauty of IMAX. The surround sound and IMAX just always just makes me happy.
But, I mean, it's something that I would watch on HBO when it came on. If, like I said,
if I didn't have anything on my agenda and it was on, I don't think I'd change the channel.
My kid would probably like it. I think your daughter would quite enjoy it.
I don't think that would be the right kind of group. Like a senior citizen group.
No, that's just, you know, it's on board ladies and gentlemen. They might understand what you have
bridges to say. But, you know, we, we got to think Mary Ann Ashton, everybody universal. Thank you,
