So we're looking forward to bringing you those to you.
What we're going to bring you this week is a movie currently in theaters as you hear this.
It is called runner runner.
Just in Timberlake, Ben Affleck, Gemma Arderton,
directed by Brad Furman.
You would know him from the Lincoln lawyer.
More than anything else.
And we're going to review it for you.
We've got a chance to see it courtesy of our friends at Allied.
Brought us in.
Let us see the movie so we can tell you about it.
Basic story of the film.
Just in Timberlake plays a richy first.
Who is a kid going to Princeton and he gets in a little trouble for promoting gambling websites.
And so he decides he's going to make one last ditch effort to try to get enough money
made that he can finish school.
Lose is always money because that's what gambling does.
Realizes he's been cheated.
Travels the coast to Rika to confront the founder of the website Ivan Block.
And then things get weird from there.
Gemma Arderton plays Rebecca Sheffron.
She's kind of his partner.
Ish.
Also in this film.
Michael, I'm sorry, Anthony Mackie.
Who you will know from the upcoming Avengers Age of Ultron.
Or he will be playing the Falcon.
He was also in the heart locker real steel.
Million dollar baby and the adjustment bureau.
So.
Let's start with the film itself.
Being the host of this show, I will save my opinions to the end.
Donald will start with you.
I want to thank everybody and ally to get a chat.
Josh, Ashley, all those guys.
Absolutely.
I have mixed reviews about this film.
I saw their trailers as pretty intrigued.
I thought the chemistry was really good between the actors.
I thought f***ing.
Put out good performance together.
But part of the plot about two of the third's way through.
I kind of got a little loss.
But believe that more for the end there.
Okay, chat, how much self.
I don't even know if I can say I'm up to a rise of this movie because to me, it felt like something that was kind of slap dash thrown together.
Now, define which means by slap dash thrown together.
It felt like a rushed product.
I felt like it was something that they took a little bit more time in character development because there were so many ideas that were put in front of you that were underdeveloped.
That you didn't really have time to grow attached or really get drawn in by any one particular person where I either care about them or I can't stand them.
You were kind of forced to make a decision that you didn't really have a chance to develop any kind of a relationship good or bad with any character.
And that was kind of my biggest issue with the film, too, is it runs about 90 minutes with credits?
Yeah, run or run or it's very, so it's very aptly named.
What I say to this film, I call it the Stargate syndrome.
When I first saw Stargate when it came out, gosh, probably about 20 years ago now, give or take.
I got to the end of the film and I was like, this movie could have been a half an hour longer and been 20 times better because I just wanted more story.
And that's the way I felt with runner runner.
You could have made this a two hour film and kind of gone a little deeper into the story.
And I thought it would have been a better film.
It's not that I don't think it's a bad film, I was entertained by it.
But as I said in my review, which you can find on the clubhousepodcast.com, I didn't feel like I was emotionally invested as much as I should have been.
I wanted to care more about the characters, but I kind of wasn't given a choice.
Yeah, you weren't given the option, yeah.
It's, I mean, is we have so many movies that are based on true stories.
I don't think this one was.
I'm not mistaken.
I thought it was.
In my car, remember reading somewhere, but I looked it up on Wikipedia.
It doesn't mention, but I thought that was,
But we have so many trailers that say that now, I think they're also going to blend together.
Yeah.
But I'm sure things of this ilk have happened because you have a lot of these gambling websites that are offshore and people are making a ton of money off them.
It's a global empire, multi-billion dollar empire.
So, Ben Affleck, as you're, I'm sorry, as you're antagonist, Ivan Block.
Affleck is a bad guy.
It's tough for me to buy.
Just because he's been that nice guy with the heart of gold for so long.
Yeah.
I thought he did okay.
Um, I didn't, I didn't really hate him.
Like, maybe I wanted to, and that's probably part of this whole not being emotionally invested thing.
Yeah.
Because when it started, the first scene you see him in,
you're kind of like, okay, I can see he's kind of taking the Gordon Gecko Wall Street style with this.
But I kind of felt like it never really came to fruition.
I wanted to know more about, or not, I'm not going to say more about seeing more of his evilness if he was going to be truly evil.
Right.
Done?
What do you think?
I, like you're saying the hell though, maybe could have been extended a little bit longer.
I thought the end got pretty confusing because they rushed too fast.
And for me, the ending, I saw it coming a mile away.
Well, what, he was doing certain events in your wondering, okay, why is he doing this?
Why is he doing that?
But I think they rushed that.
So the main, the most, the most, the, I see the average person would be able to catch on and kind of get ideas trying to do and still give us a surprise.
I thought it was too rushed.
I did kind of, I did like the acting of that fucking Timberlake.
I thought they were good together.
But that's a big straw.
What did this?
My thing with Timberlake.
It's hard.
And I haven't seen Alpha Dogs, which I probably need to.
But he still kind of had a little bit of a goofy feel to him in this film.
And I don't know if that's what he was going for.
I think he's going to do a lot of great things.
I mean, the kid is a Renaissance man.
And he's running the world right now.
And as Chad said, it is often coincidental that they released this film the week the 2020 experience part two releases.
I wanted more from him.
I wanted more from him in this film.
And I felt like I could have gotten it.
I'll be interested to see if there's an extended director's cut on Blu-ray.
That might improve the way the film looked for me.
Speaking of the way the film looked.
It's like about Brad Furman and his directing style.
And I said this in my review online too.
Man, this guy loves crane shots in 360's.
But I've visually the film was gorgeous.
There's a good contrast between, you know, the day and the night, the dark and the bright.
I thought visually it looked gorgeous.
I thought the scenery was very good too.
I mean, he did ghost read Princeton.
I thought the shots were very good there too.
I agree with you.
I'm not really falling in love with Timberlake.
Ah, if I could.
Because we said.
Pomani brother sandwich.
I knew exactly.
Yeah, well, it's character is from Pittsburgh.
You know, I was sitting behind you in the theater.
And as soon as you mentioned that, I kind of saw you kind of kind of perk up a little bit.
But one thing on the fact check and say basically says this is not true story for most of us.
Okay, okay.

Chad visually, how did you feel?
Well, they had good scenery to work with.
Low cow wise.
I mean, they.
I believe the whole thing was filmed in Puerto Rico.
Yeah, well, except for the stuff in Princeton.
Oh, yeah.
Did they film at Princeton?
Yes.
Okay.
From what I gather, they do.
But visually, you know, I'm not sure what this, what the cinematographer has done before.
But.
Moro Fiore is your cinematographer.
Thunder Smurf's training day, the island and real steel.
Okay.
I guess I can kind of see.
I can see.
He also did the 18.
The kingdom, smoking aces.
The call.
Uh, tears of tears of the sun.
Those got some skins on the wall.
Yeah.
Uh, the center of the world.
Driven.
Get Carter.
I mean, guys don't lot of stuff.
I'm still scrolling.
So.
I mean, they are, you know, the cinematographer is just as, you know, gets just as much credit
for the visual style, probably more so than director.
Um, but, uh, that's about all that really was to this movie.
It was, it was a lot of style and not a lot of substance.
Now, it's talking about a couple of other performances in the film because I'm going to do a start contrast right now.
Anthony Mackie.
Who plays agents, shivers about again, about to play the Falcon and Avengers age of Ultron.
Well, first he's going to do it.
No, no, he's not about say he's going to be in, uh,
if he might show up in the winter soldier.
He is.
He's slated for it.
But you also know him.
He's got, he's correct.
Good.
Also going to be in that, uh, fifth estate with Cumberbatch, which is about Julian Assange.
That's like right around the corner.
Right.
Gangster squad, which we still haven't seen.
I forgot that he was in Abraham Lincoln vampire hunt.
That's right.
That's the, the last thing I saw in.
What's your number real steel, the adjustment bureau?
Um, no, you played two pock in notorious.
We won't hold that against him.
Uh, I never saw it.
Did not like that.
Who did see it?
I did.
And I didn't like it very much.
You did mention million dollar baby, right?
Yes.
And the, the remake of a mentoring can.
But I thought that,
overacted a little bit.
Just a little bit.
He was an eight mile.
Did you mention that?
I never saw him.
I thought he overacted just a little bit for me.
It was a little too, little too much scenery chewing for me from him.
Yeah, he was a little, Mr.
Couldn't decide if I was a good cop or a bad cop kind of guy.
Yeah.
I'm just trying to be the heavy.
Now, I'm a start contract to that, contrast to that.
Gemma Arderton.
First of all.
How you doing?
Been a fan of hers for quite a while.
Friends of Persia, Hansel and Greta,
a quantum of solace,
clash of the Titans.
She's done some stuff.
Okay.
That's all I'm saying.
She's done some.
She was great in this.
Well, she, she didn't go over the top with it.
No, she didn't.
And, and, and, and, and keep the red hair because that works for her.
She was probably one of the few people on screen that didn't.
You know, like you said, pop the scenery in our mouth and freaking chew it up and spit it out.
Exactly.
I thought she, she, she played the role of the woman caught in the middle very, very well.
Right.
Uh, and, and what I really liked about it was.
You didn't quite know what the nature of their relationship was.
You think you know, but it takes some twists and turns.
That to me was the best part of the plot was really the nature of the relationship between
Ivan Block and Rebecca Schafin.
I thought that was really kind of neat the way that worked and the way that kind of unfolded.
And, and her developing relationship with Richard.
Yes.
Because of course she is the woman caught in the middle.
Right.
So you didn't really know you, you, you, you, there weren't any really clear cut signal
sent out as to who she was really behind.
Who she was supporting, who she believed in.
So at least that kind of kept you guessing.
That was one of the few things that kind of kept you in the dark.
Whereas things like pretty clear cut defined by the halfway point.
And it didn't take long to get to the halfway point.
Well, but you still weren't completely sure until the ending.
Until right before the big reveal at the end.
No, I'm not talking about with her.
That was between, you know, Timberlake's character in athletics.
Oh, between between Block and first.
Right, you know, you knew where they stood.
But how she fit in as well.
But no, that's what I'm saying.
Yeah.
You really aren't.
You think you know, but you're never 100% sure until there's one little piece right before the reveal.
Mm-hmm.
That if you pay attention, you realize where she's at.
Right.
And now I won't spoil the film.
Right.
If you guys don't know what I'm talking about, I'll explain once we get done.
Because there's one little little subtle thing that she does that I went.
Okay.
Now it's on.
And I'll explain that off to you.
But a movie that's.
I don't know that it's going to make a ton of money.
Um, do we have, do you have the budget on this by chance?
Uh, I just saw it.
Yeah.
Because I don't have that on the on what I'm looking at right now.
Oh, darn it.
Where'd it go?
And there's no trivia on it.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
You know, is this something that was planned to come out has this been sitting on the shelf for a while.
We don't know.
They filmed it up until October of last year in Puerto Rico.
Okay.
So it, it could, it could not have sat on the shelf that long.
If it didn't have long.
Yeah.
Not long.
How long post production was?
Because I want to say it had like an 11 million dollar budget.
That's it for those actors.
Well, it's not like.
It means the cash.
Yeah.
You know.
For him, this is probably something that, okay, this looks like it might be fun.
It's going to hang out in Puerto Rico for a while to a movie in between, you know, my directing
gigs or that may have been what it's made so far.
I think it might have been a 30 million dollar budget.
It's still not bad.
You know, it's simply like still establishing himself as an actor as well.
Here's my question on this.
I think this is a good thing for Timberlake because of his album coming out.
That's it.
30 million.
Okay.
But for Afflack.
And some other actors.
Afflack is it.
If you think this was a mistake from then to do this film.
No.
And I don't, and I'll tell you why.
I've been an Afflack fan for decades.
You know, ever since I first saw him in mall rats and that was what?
96.
Yeah.
He's been confused.
Oh, they said, I always forget about these in confused because to me,
that's more about all right.
All right.
No one will take them shut off.
Found a freshman when I'm saying your high school girls even.
I'm not.
You know, I'm saying, yeah, later.
Oh, wow.
That's like a weird turn.
Oh.
For me, Afflack.
No one expects him to be Olivier.
He is a, to me, he's a director.
He's a director that acts because if you look at his success as a director,
a director versus six, he's an amazing director.
He's directed three films and they have all been amazing.
So he's kind of made that transition.
He can still act when he wants to,
but he doesn't really have to.
You know, it wasn't like he took a runner runner and said,
if I don't do well in this, my career is doomed.
No.
Did this bombs at bombs?
Rainier games, anybody?
Changing lanes, anybody?
And do we want to say the G word?
Oh, God, no, don't, don't.
But, but, and that's the thing about Afflack is he always bounces back.
He always does.
And so for me, I don't think this is going to hurt him.
I know to go into it.
Chad was like, I want him to knock this out of the park because of the upcoming Batman thing.
And his weird is this is about to sound.
And it's going to sound strange.
I'm going to tell you now.
Even if he stinks up the joint as Bruce Wayne,
I will still be an Afflack fan.
Because I'm still a Clooney fan.
Yeah.
I admire Clooney.
And if for no other reason, Clooney actually says it.
I helped run around for ruining the franchise.
He helped, but he wasn't ultimately the boss.
No, he's not even there.
No, Joe Showmarker.
Yeah.
That guy can take a long walk off a short pin.
I don't care if you wrote and directed St. Elmo's Fire.
I don't care.
You go Pound St. Sir.
Good day.

Hammered by a cheesy director and a awful terrible script.
And I don't know the Killmer's ever record.
But that's a whole different topic for a whole separate podcast.
But I don't think this hurts, like at all.
Because he is more of a director now than he is an actor.
But you say he's a director that acts.
I do.
I believe it.
That's kind of hard to make.
I think he's starting to give to that point now.
In my eyes, is somebody says, what do you think of Ben Affleck as?
He's a director.
Because he's had so much more success.
That's what stands out more.
I'd say actress.
He's been doing it longer.
Yeah.
I see him taking that turn more.
He's got to do it.
But he's got to do it.
But he's got to do it.
But he's got to do it.
But he's got to do it.
But he's got to do it.
But he's got to do it.
The first person I can really say earned that title is a director that acts as Eastwood.
Gibson.
Still he's an actor that directs.
Not a direct.
Now I would say that about Gibson to me.
He's an actor first.
But to me, I look it now five years ago.
I would have been a complete opposite.
But with as good as gone baby gone as good as the town and as good as Argo were.
That's three in a row.
That's a trend.
Yeah.
That's me for me personally.
That establishes you.
The.
I agree with Eastwood to me's 50 50 because he's in so much of what he's

Well, but you know, F. Well, F was in Argo.
That's a value.
He's an all three.
But yeah.
But I guess to me, even though he was the centerpiece in Argo.
To me, that just seemed like an ensemble.
Well, but you know, if you were to ask F.
That's probably what he would tell you.
I'm a director first actor second.
I don't even answer that question.
I think he'd be like, I'm just whatever you think of.
Do you think you should have directed this one?
No.
You would have done better.
Because this type of film is not his forte.
I mean, I like the premise of the movie.
I just think it fell short.
And I think he could get done a better job.
When I look at Furman's visual style,
it makes me think of early Michael Bay.
Yeah.
Armageddon.
Bad boys.
That's what especially with his use.
Even if you look at the poster for this film.
Very gold tones.
And Michael Bay loves gold tones.
Watch any Michael Bay film.
And about 80% of that film is shot in Autumn Hughes as the kids like to say.
But that's what I don't think.
But this is an Afflex style.
Afflex more.
His directing style is a little bit grittyer than this.
It tends to be a little more cerebral.
Or as this.
I could see.
I could see that.
Well, I mean, because you know,
you really, Argo is a story that you kind of got to get your head around a little bit.
Whereas this is pretty much straightforward.
Okay.
Final analysis.
All three of us have seen the film.
Heck, we watched it together.
I hope we all threw away.
Chad will start with you.

We don't rate things with numbers or stars.
The way we rate films on this show, if this is your first eye.
I'm sorry.
If this is your first eye tunes exclusive.
First of all, go back up with some of the other ones.
Secondly, the way we rate films on this show is if you were to watch it again.
How would you watch it again?
Or does it better or worse than Wesley Snipes the Art of War?
Which is the litmus test by which all things suck.

If you happen to catch it on on core and there's nothing else on.
Okay.
Let's see if HBO or something like that.
But I would say if it's coming out, I'd probably watch that.
We can not like Chad who's saying it.
Like on HBO, sorry, night premiere.
Yeah, fair enough.
For me, I would watch this because I didn't hate the movie.
Again, let me say I didn't hate this film.
I was entertained by this film.
I just wanted more out of it.
I would watch this again.
If I was having a bunch of buddies over and we wanted to watch a movie
that we could just leave our brain at the door and have some fun with,
and it was a red box.
I would pay a couple of bucks to rent this.
But I would say to someone who hasn't seen it,
I'd say DVD rental like it did on the my written review.

I could see how you would say that if you haven't seen it before,
I don't know that I would pay evening price.
I think I might pay like at a Saturday morning matinee price to see it
if you wanted to see it in the theater.
Because I think visually it's beautiful.
I didn't have any problem with the sound where we saw it.
You know, we did see it digital, which seeing a film digital is always nice.
But I, you know, I would rent it on DVD.
I would again, but as I said earlier in the show,
I would like to see if there is going to be an extended director's cut
that might give us a little bit more because I'd like to see maybe what he took out of the film.
That might have, you know, kind of like I would, I'd now refering to as the Serenity principle.
Because when you watch the deleted scenes from Serenity,
people that weren't fans of Firefly would have understood so much more about that film than they did.
But I'm not just reading Lord knows.
Because we wouldn't be doing this if you would.
I don't know.
I would like to think if we were a rich and famous that we would still take time to do a podcast.
Not this room.
Probably probably not in this particular studio.
There probably a home.
I've a much more lavish studio within this.
Like an Ivan block type studio.
