We're reviewing this one a bit in advance, so I can't give you a number, just look at
the description. My name is Rob. I am the executive producer of the Clubhouse podcast,
and I don't ever want to fall out of a boat. It's all I'm saying. We doing okay with
our kids? Not alone for this particular episode, joining me across the desk in the co-host
chair, filling in for Chad who is not present for this particular screening, is the newest
member of the crew and a man who he's on a boat, but we're not going to say what the next
word of that song is. He is Alex. Welcome, sir. Good to be here. I am a fan of the original
overboard, so I'm curious to hear how this goes. Also joining us is the official fact checker
of this show and a man who has decided two seconds before to start recording this episode.
He's going to throw the entire studio into chaos. You may know him is fond on Go, but his
mama named him Don Ford. I'm going to call him Don Ford. What are you doing over there?
We're trying to get the equipment to work as one of the headsets on the one side worked.

Okay, it's Chad's not even here. I can't even say it's your boy.
Rounding out the desk is the lady of the house and someone whose headphones are apparently
are working, so she has nothing to worry about. Gen. Roma's here. Hello, friend. Hello,
everyone. Whenever we do one of these things, it is to review something. This one is no
difference. It is a remake. Alex has already told you what it is. Co-directed by Bob Fisher
and Rob Greenberg. It is overboard for we start this whole thing. Yes, sir. Okay, we have
to thank Brad and everybody at Fonds PR for their invite. Hey, thank you guys. They let
us see movies early. This one really early so that we can review them for you so you can
make the best possible decisions for your entertainment dollar. So if you remember back in the
80s, this is the same based on the film with Goldie Hahn Kurt Russell, but the roles
are reversed this go around. In this one, we have Anna Ferris and Eugenio Derbes, who you
might remember from last year's How to Be a Latin Lover. I remember him from a few years
before that. He did a film called Instructions Not Included that I very much enjoyed.
Oh, one of my favorites. So he is the bazillionaire playboy, heir to an empire that he has
no business running. And she is the struggling mom of three trying to become a nurse, but
she's also delivering pizzas and steam cleaning carpets. And when he falls off the boat, his
sister, he has a sister that's that she should own this company as their ailing father seems
to be fading. And so he doesn't remember who he is. She claims that he is her husband
and he's very domesticated and things like that because she wants a little bit of revenge
for the way he treated her on the boat when she was trying to clean the carpets. And then
hilarity ensues. Also involved, Eva Longori is in this Emily Madison Suzy Kurtz. I don't
know why they built her so high. She's not in it very much. The great John Hannah, if you
remember Spartacus, Blood and Sand, he was involved in that or the Brendan Fraser mummy movies.
Ah, yes. And there's, and also Mel Rodriguez, keeping eye on him. We're going to talk about him
in just a little bit. This runs about an hour 50, which I was a little weary about going
in because I mean, I was like, how are you going to fill an hour and 50 in this, especially
with something looking like such a good quality. And I, and I purposely didn't go back and
watched because I haven't watched the original in decades. But I purposely didn't go back
and watch the original because I didn't want that in my mind when I saw this. I enjoyed
this film. I very much enjoyed this film. And I, you know, whenever we go to see these
things and for those of you that don't know, we're given, uh, comment carts by our vendors
so that we can tell them what we thought of the movie. Kind of a, a, a readers digest version
of what we'll be talking about later. And I said in my written comments that this, this
far exceeded my expectations. Like, they could have been passable and I'd have been fine.
But this really did exceed my expectations. And a lot of it is because of Derbez. Oh,
he's, he's great in everything he does. If this film doesn't do the deal where it's going
to push him more in for, because he's huge to Spanish audiences. Oh, well, he produces
tons of stuff south of the border and is part of the film Institute of Mexico, I believe.
This should help propel him to it to much bigger heights in this country of my personal
opinion. Look like you want to say something. But you know what you should do. Talk straight
to the microphone as we talk about every other episode of the show. Okay. It's done. I don't
know who's worse. You were chat at this. It's like, don't talk over here. Talk here.
It's kind of hard because you always say, don't yell. But I don't want you to yell. But if you
just talk straight into the microphone, you don't do it to my mouth. That's right. It's exactly
I can't say that to boy. But I'm here with me and your lovely wife was with us as well.
Faith Ford at a great place to see a movie. We're at the Alamo. Yeah. Are you talking about
dress codes for me? Yes. I did. I did. Long story. We'll tell you later. But you know, you guys
look like you enjoyed this very much too. Yes. I did. One thing I didn't realize on the film
would be that long. I still thought maybe 10 minutes could have been cut out. Really? Yeah.
The acting was good. Now, like you're saying, we got the two leads on here. You got
from the scary movie. You got Ferris. On a Ferris. And then you got the breeze. I like both of them.
That's what I said. Drew breeze plays for the New Orleans Saints. But
the Latino dance. Okay. He's still got it wrong. That's what I said. No, it's fine. But still,
I love it. Some of the films that he's been in. Seven minutes and 15 seconds for those if you
paying attention. He's does a great roles. He's great. Yeah. And I really do like him now.
This is going to be a shining star. Is this film going to be on his life's work when he
passes away whenever that day is where they show the greatest roles? No, it won't be on that list.
But still, but I think this can be seen as a film that really helped get him to American audience.
I think other films have, but it's going to keep the train going. This is not going to shoot him
up anymore, but still keep that quality going. But in that same token, this is one of the few films
that's done by, for lack of a better term, an American production company. Yeah. This is going
to be something that's going to be mass distributed, where films like How to Be a Latin Lover got more
of a limited release or films like instructions on which I love the very same. Yeah, we both love
those films, but I think this is going to be seen as the film that's going to help open him to a
wider audience. And I think they're kind of in a way, yes, because there is in all those films,
there's that subtitling. There's a time even in this one, but not as much compared to instructions
included. Well, because instructions that include it was made for that audience. Yeah. This audience,
I mean, they didn't want to just make a Mexican family that spoke English. So I respected that.
Yeah. If you like both of those actors, you're going to be satisfied. You're not going to be
overblown. You're not going to be disappointed. But and I like him. He, so I was very happy that
it's still kept in that plane. Now if you go to Longoria, hello. But my only gripe I really had on

thought maybe it's about 10 minutes too long. You did say you mentioned that earlier. I don't know
that I felt that way. I mean, if it was shorter, it wouldn't bother me, but it didn't bother me at
the length that it was. I think it's not maybe for about five, 10 minutes, maybe a little too long
of trying to keep that story going. They could have got the point done with about five, 10 minutes less,
but still the thing I really liked about it is that there's a good mix of comedy all the way through
the comedy does not dry up. And there's that good mix of emotional moments too. And those three
girls and one of them, this is a feature debut. They did good as the three daughters. Yeah,
especially at one scene where it gets really emotional. I'm going to say is with the limo.
That, that one really hit me in the heart on that. And so the eldest looked really familiar to me.
Hannah Nordberg. She was an American pastoral, but I don't feel like that's what I remember her
for. I feel like I've seen her in a lot of stuff, but I'm looking through her, her IMDB page. She was
on General Hospital for over a year, but that's I don't know. Yeah, she's just got one of those
faces that looks familiar. Land Nordberg and Lapinski. She's the new one. So the youngest.
Yeah, the youngest. And so this is her first. She did one other thing on the MDID site, but
this one is her first like full feature. So I mean, they did really good. And I love how those
daughters grew the more that he's in the household because they grow as, you know, these girls who's
missing a dad, but all of a sudden starts to get filled and you see these characters grow
and the acting ability says some about these young girls where you see them grow and can get emotional.
But I liked how they didn't try up. It's a good mix. I enjoyed it. I really did.
The only thing that was a little perplexing to me on this. And you guys jump in if you have any
questions as we go along. I love Suzy Kurtz. Don't get me wrong. Been a fan of this woman for decades.
You could have taken her out of this and it wouldn't have made a look at difference.
Entirely? Absolutely. What was her role on that? She was the mother. Okay.
She was Anna Ferris' mother. Yeah, she's only in about two, three scenes. Right. And so she's
basically in the trailer almost as much as she's in the movie pretty much, but her storyline does
nothing to add to the plot. Except, hey, I used to watch your kids, but hey, now I'm going out
of town. Bye. And I'm going to call you every once in a while. That was it. I mean, that was that
was weird for me. But on the opposite of that spectrum, John Hannah is great in this. He plays.
Isn't he? He plays a character who is basically the captain of the boat. I'm a boat captain.
And he's probably worn that hat. But he's also kind of the de facto caretaker.
The end for the yang on this guy. For for for for Leonardo, who's Eugene, you know,
Debez's character. And I'm just so used to seeing the role that he plays in Spartacus. Like,
you hate him so much on that show. But he's kind of nice to see him where it's like, okay,
so he can play this beside of it too. And, you know, even Longori, how you doing?
Always good in this. But I really, really enjoyed the work, like I said earlier, of Mel Rodriguez,
who plays, even Longori's character's husband, who is the construction foreman, who is,
yeah, who Leonardo works for. He is really, really good in this. And what I really was impressed with
on that side of the story was the chemistry of Debez and all of the guys that were on the
construction crew with him. Like, there was a there was this nice little close knit family feel
that I thought was really, really good in that. And they took him in because they were ripping him.
It's like the new guy syndrome was going to get all the little licking's of being the new
freshman in. They called it lady hands. Yeah. And they work on, they work on a pool together at
a house. And it's just I was pleasantly surprised by this. I really, really was. Well, one of the things
I wonder about that though is, is it because you had low expectations going in that it seems
that much higher? Or is this legitimately a very good movie? This really is a good film.
This is not something where I was like, I wanted this to suck. And it didn't. It was just,
I was kind of like, this is going to be what it is. And there is, there is at least one nod to the
original. And you'll know it when you see it. Okay. I'll, Don, you're looking for flexed. I'll tell
you off here. Because I don't want to sell the original. Yeah. But no, you, you know, there is an
original and you know when it was correct back in the 1987. Okay. We'll talk about it. Okay. You're
talking about my mind here. I, I'm fully aware of that. Sure. But go ahead. Sorry. There was an
independent and this nothing to do with it because I am the one person in this room who hasn't seen
it, I believe. Was there any inclination towards or did anybody hear if they were thinking about
trying to use Kate Hudson for the movie? I'm glad they didn't. Well, no, no, I never heard
that they did. But, and, and I'm glad you mentioned that because I think on a Ferris,
does a very good homage. She's got a lot of the Goldie-Hon mannerisms. And I've thought
that for a long time. But she really shows it here. We were actually talking, as I've heard,
Kate Hudson were switching it Earth perhaps? Maybe. Kate Hudson more physically resembles her. That's
all true. Yeah. I was talking with some, I'm sorry, go ahead. I was going to say I think Kate
takes on the acting more like her dad does, but looks more like her mom wears. Anna has the the
quirkyness. The quirky and the she is. She is. And I've, I've actually seen stuff. And I'm like,
man, she's kind of like Goldie-Hon. And now I'm seeing that she's in this and I kind of want to see
it to see how she does the homage to Goldie in it. And we were speaking to some critic friend of
ours after the film. And they said, you know what? Not, not, not to try to pigeonhole these two,
but if I'd like to see them gender swap this and do private Benjamin again. And I was like,
you know what? That would be interesting too. I don't know that they'd want to do that because
again, you're starting to pigeonhole yourself at that point. But I really, I mean, this is really
truly an enjoyable film. Like, it took me a little while to get Anna Ferris locked in. Because I'm
not used to her in this kind of role where she's being a little underhanded. But it's still the
comedy, but now she's having a motion. So she's not going, this is not going too far out of the
wheelhouse, but it's still in that realm. But it's still very, very good. It's still very, very
enjoyable. And there's no suspension of disbelief, but it's not bad or horrible like some other films
which we've talked about in the past, but that huge suspension disbelief. But it was fun. Yeah,
it's a lot of fun. There is a little bit of the, I mean, it's like Don said, there's some
suspension of disbelief like, if you have amnesia, why can you do this and why can you say this and
why do you know this? But nothing that took me out of it. Well, as the trained in psychology member,
there is a lot of muscle memory and things that'll be latent in your subcontext and your memories
that will be able to be called back if it's a consistent thing. I would say when you see the film,
I'd be interested from that aspect to see what you think. Like a doctor, there is a level of
suspension of disbelief. Well, it just based on the surface level of what you're describing against.
I've been through studies and seeing studies that have that same kind of aspect, but I'm sure
based on the look on your face. And I know this is an audio medium. There's gotta be something.
And I know that Don was able to identify with the other sister as well because she
plays a horrible cello. Oh, yeah, I would give her a run for money. They should put me in that role.
There's a scene where she has schools are having. I'm sorry. You said you needed to play the role of the sister?
No, that's not something in common with the sister. But in a scene where they're having the funeral
because they think he's died. She starts, she's decided she's going to play. It's so funny. It's just
one of those moments. It's just like, oh dear. And true story actually started with the
cellar then and what to the viola. And there's a nice another little piece of trivia that we'll
talk about off air that pertains to that as well that I don't know if you caught it or not.
Okay. So there's two things you got to talk about. Okay. Any other questions you guys have
where we get to final analysis? No. All right. The way we do the final analysis on this show,
we're not going to give you thumbs up, thumbs down. We're not going to give you letter grades,
numbers, Seattle, Seahawks, logos, anything like that. This place takes place in Seattle, by the way.
Or it's an organ. Or it's an organ. But they're big Seahawks fans. Because that's the nearest team.
Yeah. What we're going to do is we're going to ask up to two questions. Question number one is,
would we see this film again? The answers know that we're done here. But if the answer is yes,
it will turn into how far are we willing to go to see it? From the best of the best of the
worst of the best, here's the spectrum. Full price at the theater down to a twilight showing down
to a matinee, down to early morning on the weekend, down to second run at the dollar theater,
down to actually leaving your house and getting it from red box, down to streaming on flint if
that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's down to watching it on
cable. Don, would you see overboard again? Yep. How far are you willing to go? I would do
something like a Saturday afternoon or matinee showing. Okay. Fun film. I think I'm right there with
you. Yeah. I would definitely see this again. I would definitely see I would be okay to see this
in a theater. Especially like we love the Alamo so much. Yeah. That whole atmosphere of doing
dinner in a movie right as they do. I think this was a good atmosphere for that. I really
really I thought it was a great time. I really very I always enjoyed the Alamo but I think this
film in that setting I think did very very well. Anything else? Fun time. All right. It is
co-directed by Bob Fisher and Rob Greenberg. It is overboard. Throwing this whole thing. Yes.
