My name is Rob, I am the executive producer of the Clubhouse podcast, and I'm an animal
lover, not afraid to sit, got two cats, they're cool, they keep it real, whatever.
But I'm not alone for this particular episode, joining me across the desk as he tends
to do from time to time, is the official fact checker of this show, and a man who grew
up around a lot of animals, it happens in Montana.
You may know him as fun, don go, but his mom and even don't forward, I'm going to call him
down for it, welcome sir, what do you expect in a state where there is literally more
cows than people?
I'm just saying, it's a verified fac plusers moves in all these other animals, deer, whatever
we do one of these things, it is to review something, and this is no different, but it
is a little different, because for the first time ever, we're reviewing a film that's
making its debut on Netflix, it is directed by the guy who directed Snowpiercer, June
Nobong, and it is called Okja, for a start this whole thing, there we go, we're ready
to sing, we are allied in great marketing, we love those people, some of our favorite people,
we're big fans, and we thank them for giving us a chance to watch movies, and do stuff
and review that for you so you can make the best possible decisions with your time
and money.
Okay, so here's what you need to know, there's this very powerful company that is trying
to basically solve world hunger and solve some of the things our planet is going through.
It is headed by one Miranda was her last name, because the name of the company played
by Tilda Swin, who was also in Snowpiercer, so there's these super pigs that they have,
and they're sending them all over the world to grow up, and they're having a contest,
that whoever's super pig is the best grown, they're going to bring them back to New
York, and be part of a huge festival, and more.
Fast forward 10 years, and we are in Korea, where Mija, or Mihada, depending on how you
say it, played by Siuhun on, is the daughter of a farmer that is drawing one of these
pigs, and she has very grown clothes to said pig, whose name is Okja, Okja,
and when Johnny Wilcox, a TV personality, played by Jake Jelon Hall, shows up, she finds out
what the real plan is, she's not real cool with this, so she's going to go bring Okja back home.
That's about as far as I want to go.
There.
Okay, this runs a solid two hours, it's an hour 58.
Let me say, first and foremost, before we go any further.
When you see the poster for this, or you see some of the still images from this,
it's got kind of, you see, and you think it's got kind of a Pete's dragon vibe to it.
Yes, give me that 100%.
This is not that, no.
The only way I can describe this film to you is that it's a cross between ET and fast food
nation.
I never saw fast food, I apologize.
If this is not a family film by any stretch of the imagination.
Oh, no, because since it's on Netflix, it's not going to necessarily have a rating,
but it is TVMA, which is the equivalent of a theatrical R.
It hits the profanity level in about in the first 10 minutes.
This is graphic.
This is violent.
This is defining the phrase adult situations, very brutal.
Lot of violence.
Very tough to watch.
There is something.
I was, yeah, I was not prepared for this going in.
Now, the next morning, I did watch both trailers that are located on IMDB.
And the first trailer, the longer trailer, gives you a little bit better of an indication
of what this film is all about, but not to the depth that you probably need to know going in.
If you see this and you go, oh, I want to watch this.
Looks like no, don't watch it with the kids.
No, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't.
This is TVMA for a number of reasons, especially in the end part.
In the beginning, in the beginning, it's, well, yeah, you know,
did you see the little animals?
Yeah, but you have to remember her speech at the beginning, too.
Till this went in the speech in the beginning, gets a little graphic.
Yeah, but, but beyond that, right after that, when you start seeing the
Oakja in Korea with the girl and their life on the wood,
and then, oh, this is the one we're going to take it back home.
And then you get back home, what's going to be a little versity where the
she was going to try to save it and you're going to take it back home and all that stuff.
But then when it gets to the day-no character in what his organization is also in this,
it's got a great cast.
And I didn't know that's Jim Hall.

I was like, what?
That was him.
Did it, didn't recognize him.
Giancarlo Espositos, and this one,
a huge fan of Paul Danos, and this one, a huge fan of.
But this thing is dark.
It's jewelry.
Yes.
It's, I mean, this is not the feel good movie of the year.
No, let's just put it out there.
It's this is, this is an adult drama in every sense of the word.
In a trailer, it kind of even had, in my written review again at www.theclubhousepodcast.com.

I put it in, I was watching a trailer and I kind of thought, well, it's going to be a little
animal and growing up and it gets to go to New York and, you know, there's a little bit of adversity
in all that because animals not used to the big city, you know, kind of like a Disney kind of thing
where there's that little little trial time and all that.
Oh, there's trials.
There are trials.
Brother, you know, I'm not going to have this thing.
And I'm not saying that this is a bad film.
What I'm saying is you need to be prepared for what this film is going into it.
That's what I am saying.
Yes.
Because this film is not rainbows and puppy doctels and unicorns.
This is dark and it's gritty and it's dreary and you have to be prepared for it.
The thing is there's so many layers to this and again, we say a spoiler free as possible on this show.
Again, it's not a bad film.
It's just not what you may be expecting from a film on this caliber.
Correct.
There's kind of like, I give the best weiner dog to Chad.
If Chad was to go in a weiner dog, now that would not go well, that would not go well.
That would be the best way to put it.
Because you think that's a fair assessment.
I would say a to a degree.
Yeah.
I still think that would be a worse situation, but not by much.
If you can handle this type of material,
because I'm going to say this, the little girl that plays Misha in the film.
She's listed as on Sayohyun, but it's the other way around for her first name.
She's amazing in this.
Yeah.
Her emotional range without saying a whole lot is really good.
She said a lot, but we got one in this subtitle.
There's a lot of subtitles.
But she doesn't have as much dollar as she could.
Yeah.
And I will tell you this, I will say give it credit to this.
If you have some kind of a surround sound system in your house,
the sound field on this is really good.
Yeah.
And the reason I say that was we saw this at the greatness of the Alamo Draft House in Richards and Tetsu.
We love that place.
We're big fans.
Yes, we are.
There's a point in the film where there's a late as a receptionist behind the desk using her phone.
Yeah.
I really thought somebody in our row was using their phone.
Oh, so I was like, really?
Oh, wait a minute.
Oh, that's in the movie.
I mean, it sounds like, yeah.
This is just one of those movies that I was not prepared for.
No, no, at all.
They'd be mad aside.
Let's talk about everything else.
It's not, it's not a great film.
It's not a bad film.
The look was good.
I thought the CG.
Oh, I was good.
The visuals were amazing.
Yeah, you think the Oaksha, you know, it's CGI.
After a while, you don't think of the CGI, which is a compliment from a visual standpoint.
Very good.
I'm a little bummed out that this isn't getting a theatrical release because seeing it in that big screen
environment that we were in because we were in the big house there at the Alamo.
It has looked absolutely gorgeous.
It looked beautiful, especially in that Sony 4K.
I was like, oh, I really can't know which people could see this on a big screen because it looks amazing.
But again, the big thing here is you have to be prepared for what this film is.
In other things, I want to go into is the acting.
You thought you start to think of Oaksha as a character.
Absolutely.
Totally.
So I think the acting was good.
Joan Hall, I want to bring up again.
He is able to do so many different roles now.
Oh, yeah.
He's always been great.
I mean, October's character.
I think the most Homer actually in October sky, then he's able to go and do, you know,
and to watch, not crawler.
Not crawler, which is a totally, and now this, my thing with Joan Hall.
I'm a huge fan of the dude.
Oh, so amazing.
This character wore me out.
And I think that was his intense, like the character's supposed to be grading and annoying.
Yes.
He is a nature show host from the past.
He's like the crocodile hunter, but his star is fading and he's trying to hold on to it.
He kind of wore me out a little bit, but overall connecting what he did.
Yeah, he said a great job.
Don't get me wrong.
And again, visually, gorgeous, really enjoyed it.
I just wasn't prepared for what this film was.
But I want to make sure that the empire, yeah.
Yeah, we ended the plot was still good.
I, what was your watch cage?
Fifty minutes.
Yeah, that was, was I tell you.
Oh, no, yeah, no, I kept my intention to plot.
It flows good.
It goes good.
But the only going to say is the undercover footage from the lab.
Yeah, I mean, that's all.
There are some very uncomfortable scenes in this.
That I don't know is meant to carry a message or not.
But if you go back and you watch snowpiercer, there are some parallels in the messages
that are being put across in both films.
Yeah, but yeah, this is a thing.
Yeah, this is a thing that you don't think it is if you can
you don't do the research.
And after seeing this, and as, um,
during the IMDB thing and stuff, and I saw that this guy directed,
to snowpiercer, so I'm like, oh, I could see it now.
I could see it.
And till the Swinton plays kind of the same character she plays,
yes, it appears her, which for me, she plays up her a well, though.
Yeah, but I feel like she, that character belongs in more of a Tim Burton film.
You know what I mean?
But still, it's still good.
But it's still, but she's, I mean, she's good.
I, I didn't, I think she's good for the part.
I don't think she's bad for the part.
If I was a director and I had a kind of role, if I could get her on,
for casting, I would do it.
No, no, she's a great actor.
Yes, yeah, it's just, you have to understand that what this movie is.
Yeah.
Is there anything else we want to cover? We're going to final analysis?
Yeah, uh, great film, but be prepared.
Absolutely.
That's the best way we can do it.
All right, the way we do the final analysis on the show.
We're not going to give you a thumbs up thumbs down.
We're not going to give you letter grades, numbers, uh, hard drives.
Nothing like that.
Here's what we're going to do.
We're going to ask two questions.
Question number.
What is, would you see this film again?
If the answer is no, then we're done here.
If the answer is yes, the question is going to be how far you want to go to see it.
Well, since this is a Netflix film,
there's not much more to go to than Netflix or Red Box.
I mean, it is what it is.
So, Dom, would you see this again?
Yes, okay.
But if this was the theatrical release, how would I recommend it?
That's fair point.
It's fair question.
I would do, I would say Matt named it theater.
Okay, I would see this again, but I wouldn't rush out to do it.
I think Netflix is a great place for it.
Okay, because some of the scenes I can get up and walk out of the room
and let's play out and some of you know, because some of it does get uncomfortable.
And when people get to this film,
and not knowing their homes, they could just quick stop and not have to worry about
walking off the theater or sit through it or feel exactly.
Feel like they have to stay.
Go back to the menu and find something.
Yes, exactly.
So, because it is dark, I mean, I'm going to stay.
Yeah, but yeah, it is true.
