we screen this film.

I love it.
Got some rain headed our way.
Hopefully we're going to get our leg close to the house at 7 feet below normal if
we're going to get that thing up.
I have to say it was a poor decision on my part to leave the windows off the Jeep.
But you are now the Michael Knight of the Jeep community.
I, with a missing the front red light, I, you, you have to get one.
Now that you've said it, yes, I do.
We're here again because we're reviewing a movie and the movie we're reviewing tonight
is called Obvious Child, directed by Jillian Robespierre and starring SNL alumni, Jenny Slate
Also, you might recognize a young man by the name of Jake Lacy who was on the office
there towards the end.
Basically it's the story of a female comedian who, uh, gets done to buy her boyfriend
and, uh, winds up getting, uh, shall we say up at a knee-breathing to death?
And, uh, has, uh, some grown-up fun with a young man she meets and the repercussions
they're in because in this case, kids, there are repercussions.
Uh, let me start by this review by saying, first of all, thank you to our friends at Allied
Integrated Marketing who gave us the opportunity to screen this time.
I love them guys.
Thank you.
They are our best friends.
Oh, they are our best buddies.
Also, uh, I, I just lost my train of thought, but we'll move on.
I want to start by saying,
the trailers I saw for this film do not quite tell you everything you need to know.
Um, this film deals with a very hot button topic.
Very hot button, very hot button topic of abortion.
I don't think I, I, at this point I'm not sure that I care, but I'm spoiling this.
But she decides she is going to terminate the pregnancy.
That is the repercussion that we deal with in this film.
Uh, it's very short.
It doesn't even reach an hour and a half.
Going into this film, we had to talk to some friends of ours who are critics at another screen
that we went to and one of the young ladies we talked to said,
how much she loved this film and how it was our favorite film of the year and that this
this director had a great vision and everybody has to see this film.
And so I kind of had high hopes going in because it was somebody who's, who's opinion
that, that, you know, right respect.
I don't really know this person real well, but I respect it her opinion.
And then I saw the film and I kind of couldn't disagree more.
Um, don't wish to give that at the end.
Well, we'll, we'll get there.
But I want to start with Robes beer.
Now this, this comes from a short film she did in 2013 with Jenny Slate was also in the short film.
It's 23 minutes.
Yeah.
And she wrote and directed and produced this version.
As far as her vision in the film, I've had some time to think on it because as we
left the theater last night, I was like, I don't hate this film, but I don't know how
I feel about this film.
So I've had a chance I slept on it, thought about it a little bit today.
I don't see her as a visionary because I think MTV films could have directed this and it would
have looked the exact same way.
It had, I'm not going to say did a lot of what they call the Dutch tilt.
It's what they call when you're, when you're looking at it, it looks like the pictures
diagonal, that, that, that, that the real world, like pioneered pretty much for us.
But it was a lot of quick cuts back and forth, um, a lot of low lighting.
I didn't see it as a visionary.
I'm, but again, everybody's entitled to their own opinion.
Don't let start with you.
What did you think of, uh, Miss Robes beer's vision for the film?
I, you have to start off and give it warning.
This is a very adult, uh, language adult humor.
He's talking about the film.
Yeah.
Yeah.
A lot of, uh, crude jokes in there.
Uh, so we have to give that.
This is not for the kids at all.
Not anyway, shape of the world.
No.
It's not even for some adults.
Yeah.
Exactly.
There's going to be some, uh, I started off going in with an open mind on this thing.
And I saw how much the locally start tried to promote this, which I put on my, uh, written review for the club ass podcast.com.
That is our website.
Okay.
Um, I started off kind of this.
Okay.
They're starting with this new kind of adult humor of kind of crude.
Let's see how this goes.
Can this be funny?
Can it last?
And after a while.
It's like day old donuts that been sitting on a shelf for about two weeks.
Okay.
I've got very still very still.
It got very, very old for you very quickly.
Very still.
Yeah.
Okay.
14 day old donuts.
Wow.
Well, Dave, tell me what you thought about the direction of the film.
I don't want to get to the film itself, just yet.
I want to talk about the director first.
Okay.
I understand where they're going with it.
It just, it's, it's a little bit too.
And maybe this is the saying's a little too played out.
But it's a little too.
But it's a little too.
But it's vagina, but not monologues.
Okay.
It's, it's geared towards women.
But very, very crass women, you know.
And I'm a big fan of, of, of dirty humor.
I love, I love you, man.
Anything with Jason Segel or done, done by John Appetal?
I'm a huge fan of.
I'm going to fan of Appetal since he did stand up in the late 80s.
That's how I were then, Marim.
So I know where you're going with that.
For me, the opening scene where she's, you, you meet the character for the first time.
And she's doing stand up, so she's in her element.
She didn't look comfortable.
It was very strange for me that opening sequence.
Well, no, I, I got that direction because she's supposed to be an amateur comic.
I'm very sure you're that.
They, they, they, they said it was a free club.
The, the, the schedule was open and free.
So she's supposed to be a, a very, you know, someone tried to hone her craft.
Yeah, a very, a amateur comic.
The problem was, is none of the, nothing.
She said was really funny.
It was really disgusting or just her rambling.
Like I'm doing right now.
There's a couple of few funny jokes throughout the film.
I'll say that.
But overall, the direction like you're saying,
it just seemed like this was just kind of put together in one girl's mind.
And kind of let's put this here, put that there, put that there.
It's kind of like putting trying to put a jeeked stop puzzle together.
And there's no pieces at match.
I'll tell you something.
And I said to Rob last night was, if you take the comedy out of it.
Okay.
You, which, this movie could deal with out the comedy.
You might have a film.
Okay.
They were reaching way too hard for the comedy in this film.
And not enough for this storyline.
And instead, it, it has a story.
I know what direction they were going with this story.
It's just, the comedy was so disgusting.
And she relies upon the comedy.
Oh, and that's her crush.
That, that'll segue into the, the film, the story of the film itself.
What I kind of felt was, you took this thing from 23 minutes to 84 minutes.
So when you're quadrupling your runtime
and to make a feature film from a short,
I kind of feel like they did a lot of that just to kind of fill the space
where they could have maybe took more time to tell the story.
I mean, we know Jenny slates a comedian.
She's got to started our live background.
We get that.
It was like, we wanted to do half concert film, half story.
And it just, but, but on the other side of that,
point for me, and this will kind of segue, you know,
we'll do like the story and the performances together.
I didn't see any chemistry problems in the film,
which is why it perplexes me that I really didn't dig the flick.
But from an acting standpoint, like Richard Kind, who I'm a huge fan of.
Yeah, there's a couple, my soul plays her dad.
Polly Draper, I believe it's her name that plays her mother.
You might remember her from some TV appearances and things of that name.
She was great as her mother.
Jake Lacy, I thought he had great chemistry with her.
As the kind of guy who she's trying to deal with this breakup,
but kind of likes this other guy at the same time.
There were no chemistry problems in the evening.
Okay, there's one.
Okay.
And my, in my opinion, there was certainly one chemistry problem.
I could have done with this entire portion out of the film.
And I want to know your opinion, sir.
Okay.
David Cross.
I was going, I was working my way forward.
That scene was not even needed.
What was that?
Well, David Cross has a very small role in the film.
He's in it for about five minutes.
I'm a fan of David Cross, especially from an arrested development standpoint.
But his sequence was completely unnecessary.
It was like we need to put somebody in the film that might give it some star power.
So maybe we can get some more funding.
That's how it felt to me.
It was just like he was there and then he wasn't.
There was no lead-up to it.
There was no building of his character.
Right.
It was like, oh, I was saying, hey, hi, guy, people, you know?
Well, let's put, and spoiler alert.
Say spoiler alert.
Let's put David Cross in a, in a girl's shirt.
It's a little bit hilarious.
Oh, and it wasn't.
It just came off really creepy.
But it also seemed like filler to me.
And what's total filler?
I will say, I'm acting though, the, the, uh, Gabe Leadman.
You play as the, or a best friend.
You know, uh, homosexual.
I thought he'd be getting chemistry.
Looks like a young gay, uh, key for another one.
I didn't say that during the film.
You're the only one who saw that, sir.
I didn't see it.
I can't, I can't agree with that.
Don't insult Jack Bauer like that.
Before you, young, young.
I don't care.
I don't care.
I don't know, young keys.
I know.
I, that's how I, that's how I can't.
I thought he was very, very good.
I mean, you, you, you, you bought into the bit with him.
It wasn't, you didn't feel like he was forcing anything.
Uh, again, the performances.
I thought we're good.
If there's gotta be one that I kind of, uh, uh,
Gabby Hoffman is Nelly, her best friend slash roommate.
I kind of felt they were forcing that character down our throat
a little bit more than they should have.
Um, she was, she's an ancillary character.
She needed to be as such.
It was, it was more, uh, Donna's story that it was.
Nelly's story, but they were trying.
It was just, you could, you got that feeling like.
Oh, my God.
We've got enough money to make this short movie into a feature.
What do we do?
In some of us, I'm called for like the,
I'm gonna do in the test and which he's doing walls.
She's talking to her friend.
But it's just, again, there's so much crude humor in it.
And when that's the mildest part of it.
Yeah.
Let's just say that.
That's what you're gonna get with this film.
That's the mild part of this film.
There's, uh, there's a couple of subtle moments in the film
that you kind of go ahead.
There's one scene where,
it shows how comedies her crutch.
It's by the end of the film.
It went in this one scene.
It made me hate her character.
Oh, I know it's in your talk.
I made me hate her.
And then from the end of film,
I didn't care what happened to her next.
That, that scene just ruined it for me.
And it shows just like,
and it didn't, when she's, you know,
try to do a comedy bit when she's drunk.
That wasn't funny.
None of it.
The humor got still real fast.
I'm going, this is not funny.
So are we, are we talking about that part?
Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no.
I'm not spoiled out of it.
There, there, there.
The, I'm the sender's.
What you, what you could consider the climax of the film,
which that leads to the, the resolution.
And now she has a crutch on comedy.
And that's how she deals with stuff as comedy.
That lost before.
And I said, I could just care less about her.
And then close the book out for me.
There's, there seem to be certain plot points
that, again, seem to be kind of shoehorned in there.
Just to what felt like to keep the story moving.
There's a scene where Max and Donna run into each other.
The scene with the crocs.
I, that felt real shoehorned in for me.
Really, I actually, I thought it was cute.
I thought it was a nice book because she, she spent so much time
making fun of his shoes.
They, for, for the, for the movie.
And then, then he comes in and she's wearing, you know,
ridiculous looking crocs that are like five sizes too big.
Exactly.
You know, I thought it was cute and adorable.
It's something that a couple would do.
I guess for me though, the circumstances of that scene.
I kind of went really.
That's, that's how you want to make this meeting happen to coincident.
Yeah.
It was like, I kind of go, go, go, go.
The pump, but who, for me.
All right.
Well, at the end, like near the end, like I found myself,
you know, even though, I'm, I'm holding my opinion to the end.
Even though, you know, I,
I, I couldn't deal with the humor.
I found myself pulling for the characters in the end.
And, and him, especially him.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And I'm thinking, I feel like going, I felt like taking the next character
Max, you know, like just grabbing him and punching him and seeing
Are you out of your mind?
Well, you, you, you hope for like a character like that to build
the main character up.
You know, like the, the main character is supposed to have flaws
and, and being perfect.
And the other character is, the, the co-character is supposed to be
the one who's the 50% the one that's supposed to give the other half
and make your, you know, the main character just that much better.
At the movie, I'm saying Max run away.
Run, run.
Well, he, and, and that was the thing.
I was like, I was like, okay.
This is gonna turn out good.
And I got so let down.
Well, it was, it was one of those situations where
you almost expect the character of Max to go
one direction with it.
But he kind of doesn't.
And I, again, I don't want to ruin it for people.
I actually want to see the film.
I'm not here to judge you outwardly.
But you expect, because of who he is.
You, you expect him to react a certain way to it.
But it's not necessarily what you expect him to do.
But how do you react in that situation though?
I, I can't say what he is.
So, actually, you have the night to think on it.
Right. Well, again, I don't want to get to the film.
Yeah, I'm saying that.
But I just, I thought it was, that was a nice little kind of a
left turn for me.
Um.
Let's see.
It's going to be your view.
Like, like you said in the beginning,
your personal view on abortion and how you go.
How you would deal with it, how you would handle it,
is how you're going to react.
And this is, and this is, that issue is dealt with
very straightforward.
Don't, can he coat this?
No.
So, if that issue makes you uncomfortable,
you're going to be uncomfortable in this film.
Um, I did notice some, some nervous laughter around the room
at a couple of points.
Because I, I think there were people that got to that point
and were like, okay, this is where this thing is going down.
Oh.
Okay.
You know, things I was wondering,
but like, at the, at the end of the movie,
you know, they had the, I don't know, the woman uprising music
at the, in the, in the end credits.
And I literally, and I'm like, I walked away from this movie
just disturbed.
I saw a lady just excited and dancing to the music.
And I'm thinking,
Yeah, you kind of missed the whole point of last 85 minutes.
Is this, do I just, is it because I don't have a vagina
is why the, I don't understand this movie or,
is it, is it something more?
I don't know.
For me, and here's my conundrum with this film.
Like I said before, I love the word,
I thought, I, that's your five dollar college record today.
Um, I loved their performances,
but I didn't love the film.
And that's, that's my problem.
It's, I really enjoyed the performances in the film
but the film itself did nothing.
It's not like some of the performances.
So now we're getting into it because we're getting close to the point
that we need to start going ahead and do it the final analysis.
And the way we do the final analysis on this show,
we don't do stars,
we don't do thumbs up, thumbs down,
we don't do any of that stuff.
It's a two-pron question.
Question one,
would you see this film again?
If the answer is no, then we're done here.
The answer is yes,
how would you see this film?
Would you pay full price?
Would you go to a, a twilight?
Would you go to a matinee?
Would you go to a morning?
Would you go to second run?
Would you wait for it on Blu-ray?
Or would you wait for it on?
Or will probably be IFC?
Because I don't think any of the major movie networks
are going to pick this up,
and broadcast some of those and definitely will not.
Maybe show time.
So, you know what Dave, we're going to start with you.
Would you see this film again?
Absolutely not.
I wouldn't even take my wife to this,
and I look for romantic comedy,
something like that to take my wife to,
so I have a date night with her,
and I just can't do it.
I would rather see,
and this is by far,
my number one worst movie I've ever seen in my entire life.
Okay.
Lost in translation,
I would rather watch that again.
The director's tight.
Yes.
The extended directors got,
with an hour's worth of extra footage,
I would rather sit there and watch that,
than this again.
Because if I have to hear about
what's in her panties again,
I'm going to run out of a room script,
fair point.
Don't.
Would you see this film again?
Just like under the skin.
No.
Was better than under the skin though.
Not much.
I will say that.
It was better than under the skin.
I'm going to give it a clean sweep.
I would not see this film again.
I just never,
I just,
I can't bring myself to it.
There were points where I was like,
I can see where you're trying to go with this,
but I got a big bag of nothing.
Okay, here's what's going to you then.
Which one would you watch if you had to?
This or stupid boat movie?
I would take a nap.

The boat movie is not the litmus test by which all things suck.

because I load that movie with the passion of 1000 sons.

For me, it was lost in translation.
I couldn't watch Bill Murray just sit there for an hour and a half.
Doing God knows I don't know what this movie was about at the end. I was what did I just watch and that and that's that's my little
Limit test. I can't I also scarle with your hands and movies. Well. Yeah
So I'm gonna skate with the scourge or hands and fam now the movie. She's got coming next month
