My name is Rob.
I am the executive producer of the Clubhouse podcast, and I am the smartest man alive!
But I'm not alone for this particular episode, joining me across the desk as he does
from time to time.
Is the official fact checker of this show?
And a man who could never say he's had $20,000 in his underwear.
You may know him as fun, don't go, but his mom and even don't board, I'm going to call
him, don't board, welcome sir.
I may have had a few other things in there, but not 20 grand.
Whatever we do one of these things, and it is to review something, this particular episode
no exception to that.
The latest film from director Jared Hess, you would know him from works like Napoleon Dynamite,
not Joel Libre, gentlemen Broncos, and the upcoming third installment in the Shanghai
series will be doing Shanghai Dawn, with Owen Wilson and Jackie Chan.
He is Jared Hess, it is called Masterminds.
Before we start this whole thing, we got to think all of it in our best friends.

I think it's much to home to the crew, we love those people, they're a great job in the
screen, this screen was packed.
Oh yeah, yeah it was, fun, fun, fun.
Here's what you need to know, that's here.
In the late 90s, probably 96, 97 somewhere in there.
This is the true story in North Carolina, of one of the biggest bank heists in American
history.
It is centered around David Gantt, played by Zach Galaphenakis, who is a driver for
Loomus Fargo, the company that comes and guard your money as they take it to the bank.
October 1977.
So, no, it was in the 1997 and he's working at the beginning of the film with Kelly Campbell,
played by the Great Christian Week.
She quits the job or gets fired, you see the scene for yourself.
Yes, yes.
Oh, cooks up with a guy by the name of Steve, played by Owen Wilson, who decide that they're
going to get David Gantt to rob the armored car warehouse, because they see on TV that
another one's happened and the guy fled to Mexico and they ended a catch in it.
So they get this thing done, $17 million later and kind of we go from there, is really
all you need to know about this.
Yes, Gantt has an affection for her.
Yes, she kind of uses that to get it, but he's also engaged to Janice, played by the
great Kate McKinnon.
I mean, you're probably listening to this, you're going, my god, Rob, who else is in this.
I'm so glad you asked.
Who's it also played the guy, because David flees to Mexico.
And Steve decides he's going to have David taken out.
So he hires a hitman, played my, I can't say his name, I don't want to say his name.
So there's a plot device.
Oh, okay.
The character's name.
Okay, okay.
But he is played by the great Jason Sudakis.
Also, one of the FBI detectives is Leslie Jones.
We have an SNL fill here, can I?
In Henmarino, another one of my favorite actors plays one of the, after Jason and after
I'm sorry, Steven, this wife, we've been to a new house or the neighbors, Steve's wife
Michelle played by Mary Elizabeth Ellis, who you might remember as the waitress from
it's always sunny in Philadelphia, also Mrs. Charlie Day, and I'll tell you what, friend
of the show Andrew Beckham, Ginger, Ginger, Ginger, Ginger.
He had a great observation, okay, what's that?
You remember the big guy played, runny, okay, you know who that is, who?
That's one of the brothers in the family from home alone.
That's buzz.
That's buzz.
Really?
Yes.
So shout out to Andrew for catching that, oh, I didn't even notice that.
I'm not even going to bury the lead here, I'm just going to say this right off the
top.
Let's say I put in Deadpool and a category all by itself because you really have to.
Of course.
This is the funniest movie I have seen this year.
I heard you.
And you were a row on the other side of the front as a row in front about halfway
down the row.
Within the first five minutes, my cheeks hurt.
Yes.
Because, and I'm going to set it up, I'm not going to tell you what happens.
I'm just going to set this up.
The opening scene he's working with Kelly, he realizes he's late getting home because
their, he and Janice are doing their engagement pictures.
Yes.
It's 1990's.
So I want you to think about our fashion since the film is at that time.
I, I'm so glad I went to the bathroom before we went in because I might have
peed on myself in an hour and 34 minutes of run time in this film.
I am surprised that it's rated PG 13.
That's what I was how did it get that?
Did they cut something out?
I think it's because there was really not a whole lot of cussing in it.
Yeah.
Because there's no really a lot of references.
There's a lot of adult references.
There's a lot of adult.
A lot of adult.
Not a lot of cursing.
No newbie.
I was surprised to see it was rated PG.
I would like to see if they had a none cut our version, honestly, but I, I laughed so much
in this film.
I want to say it started the bar was set with his truck and the, and the, and the, and
the driver door.
I mean, that just, that just started, I'm like, okay, this is what we're going to
get.
Please keep this going.
Please keep this going.
I, I, I, I just kind of explained it.
He drives an old pickup, like those little moths does or whatever it is.
It wasn't many pickups.
Doesn't have a door.
He has to be supply wouldn't this string.
Yeah.
Just like a, a gate door.
It's missing the, the passenger door.
He puts a piece of plywood in that little gate driver door on the driver door.
And it's missing the, the door say has a piece of plywood in that little latch you get
on a fence.
I mean, I am telling you, I might, my stomach still hurts from laughing so much at this
screening.
It was just so much room.
Anyway, it was, it's such a breath of fresh air, you give it a lot.
There's a lot of movies that are very intense right now.
A lot of what we're dealing with as a country.
This is such a nice change of pace.
And if you're bringing it to door half fun.
Gallifonacus has a Prince of valiant haircut that's absolutely genius.
I mean, when you think about it, it's really, you know, I mean, everybody knows Chad and
his affection for, for Zack, but I mean, if he saw this, I, I think he would just
do.
Yes.
I mean, does anybody do unstable and creepy better than Kate McKinnon?

I put it on.
I said to you.
Yes.
I put on there that she got my shining star.
The whole cast had incredible.
They had great, great cast together.
But if she just seemed like a robot computer that had the speed of a sloth mentally, okay,
this lady active, like she was three can't short of a six, when she tells the story
of how they met.
Yeah.
To the photographer.
Oh, my God.
I just, the way she talked, you were meant to remind me, the sloths in Zootopia.
The way it's, anytime you can put Jason Sootake as in a film, I mean, and he, his work
with Gallifonacus in this film is nothing short of brilliant.
Now, I'm going to say, is that beach scene?
Oh, my God.
And it's, it's so funny because when you watch the film, first of all, you spend an hour
and a half going, do this really happened.
Like, I know.
This is, this has not been made up.
This is based on a true story.
And you think what he's going after Gallifonacus, you're like, how is he going to get out
of this?
And then the way he gets out of it, it just, it blew my mind.
There's some really nice twists and turns to this thing.
It was, it's just so much fun.
There's a scene in the trailer, because they've been showing the trailers at Nazium,
where they hit a gate with the BMW.
Let me tell you, you may see that and think that's a spoiler, trust me.
It's what happens after that is what you're more worried about.
So don't worry about the best parts of the movie.
Oh, no, no.
Being in the trailer, because there is so much pure, unadulterated,
wonderful comedic moments.
But when you have six people like this,
and let me just also say this, it is so great to me to see Leslie Jones getting her
due in Hollywood.
And my thing on this, I don't want to bring her up on one point.
It's first off, the humor is great, but it's not gutter humor.
Exactly.
That's the best part about it.
It's funny, it's adult humor, it's stuff, it makes you laugh.
You cringe, but they do it right where it's just not a bunch of a smart humor.
It was great humor.
Jones, there's one thing I would love to see this film again.
I'm gonna say it right now, I'm gonna see this film again.
But the reason I love to see it, because there's so many little things in this film
that I may have missed.
There were so many little one-minded said, I probably didn't catch.
I mean, that one scene where, you know, Wigs talking to the FBI people,
and she goes, yeah, you two gentlemen are in it, it's just like, she called me a man.
You just had little, those little things, she don't just, and just the little things like
in their surroundings, like the way their houses are decorated, and it's, oh, the trailer
that Wilson lives in with the little, it's coming all the high rise, because there's
more so many blocks underneath it, just, there's nothing bad about this film.
The only thing I would tell you is don't bring the kids.
Even though it's PG-13, I would still say teenagers in above it.
Maybe high school.
Yeah, it's what's a teenager's, I was a teenager's on middle school.
I can say teenagers, they're old enough to work, yes, you can take them, yes, yes.
I'd still say a 13-ager, I guess it's, I cannot say enough good things about this film.
It went through most, the only complaint is I thought the comedy kind of slowed a little
bit at that party scene, and they try to put the emphasis on the, oh,
it's different, the climax of the film.
Yeah, I think they kind of dragged the humor a little bit then, but still beyond that.
If I had a complaint, if I had a complaint, that would be it, and that's not a big complaint.
The comedy, I would all the way through the thing.
First of all, I also wanted to send a shout out to her friends at Alight in a great
marketing.
I don't know if you saw, but there's a small plot device in the film that prompted them
to give certain people at the screening a two pack of Google clusters.
Yes, that happened.
And I was like, well played, Alight, well played, we love them for a reason.
The access and the chemistry between the two.
Oh, yes, everybody worked.
Yeah, they just hit it off.
Everybody had to give and take required to make the scenes work.
Nobody tried to steal the spotlight.
I mean, I just, the only thing I can say about that, though, is like,
Owen Wilson, I would consider a fairly heavy hitter.
But you've got to think he had to look around them at a certain point.
And it's like, I'm the low man, a total pole.
Yeah, I mean, I've been the business longer than most of these people.
But from a comedic standpoint, I'm getting circles around me.
And it's, oh, like, I'm looking at McKinnon on the trailer.
It's giving me ebg.
Do you want to really get me the fight scene in the department store?
That was good.
No.
His disguise.
Oh, I'm going to say his disguise.
Oh, no, it's wonderful.
Kelly, it's wonderful.
It's just a, I mean, it's, there's so much wonderful in this movie.
I'm not going to say that this will not be a purchase on the blue right now.
I honestly say I thought, you know, is this going to be one of those half comedies?
You know, my bar was kind of medium.
It went above the bar, like you cannot go and a guy like Jared Hess, who's done movies
like Napoleon Dynamite, not your lead break.
And then he takes on a story like this and it works.
Oh, it works.
Oh, well, it's, I just, there's one thing I wish that they would have done.
One thing, I'm going to put the empire, minor spoiler, three, two, don't say the one.
At the end, when they do the credits, it shows like a little update on a couple of the
people.
It's like the pictures of the real life David and all that, but you don't get what happened
between all of you.
Yeah, you don't get all of them.
Two people are so much.
Right.
But what you do get is a blooper reel that is absolutely wonderful.
The blooper reel.
Yeah.
I mean, you make those back to the, just to the, to the engagement photo scene, even
in the blooper.
Oh, yes.
I can find the carburetor, I just, I mean, I, this way we're going to have to go to the
final analysis because there's, I mean, I can't say anything bad about this film.
I can't do it.
It's that funny.
The way we do the final analysis on this show, if you're joining us for the first
time, we're not going to give you thumbs up thumbs down, we're not going to give you
letter grades, rankings, whatever.
Our audience whom we affectionately refer to as the empire, they want us to go deeper, we're
going to go deeper.
Two questions.
Question number one is, would we see this film again?
If the answer's no, then we're done here.
If the answer's yes, then it becomes how far are you willing to go to see it.
And the spectrum goes from best to worst, full price at the theater, twilight, matinee,
early morning on a weekend, second run at the dollar theater, Netflix, Red Box, cable.
Don, would you see this film again?
I already said it earlier.
Yes.
All right.
Yeah.
I'm very delayed.
I'm sorry.
Well, no, it's okay.
How far are you willing to go?
I can't give a good twilight if not a full price, but twilight the full price.
I am going to, I'm going to kind of want up you on this and because I'm going to piggyback,
I'm going to piggyback off of something that you said earlier.
Not only will I see this film again, I have to see this again because I know for an
unadulterated absolute fact that there's stuff I missed because I was laughing so hard.
Not only me, that entire audience was losing their minds during this film.
I have to see it again to find out the stuff I missed.
Yeah.
You'll be better in the second time.
Oh, I have no doubt.
Yeah.
I mean, this is one of those.
Take your best friend, take your girlfriend, take your best friend to the door, have a
fun time.
Go in a big group of people, I don't care how you see this go see masterminds.
It is that funny.
I don't care if you don't like any of the actors involved.
It won't go.
It won't go.
It won't matter because this movie works that funny and it works on so many levels.
