My name is Rob and I am the executive producer of the clubhouse podcast.
And just kind of the guy that acknowledges that there will never be wheels on this show.
Well, no really, we are your one-stop shop for all things sports entertainment, but tonight, or today I don't care when you listen.
We are going to focus on the entertainment, but to help me do that, sitting across the desk for me, is the official fact checker of the show.
And a man that has to put his bias aside for this episode.
You may know I was fond, don't go, but his mom and even don't want to call him, don't want to welcome Sarah.

We are doing a movie which has the lady I call my VTrix wife.
My version of your Britney Palmer is true.
My Karen Nile.
The movie is called Lagi's.
It starts via four mentioned here and nightly.
It also stars...
Chloe Grace Morets and Sam Rockwell.
Basically, Karen Nile plays Megan.
She's a girl.
It's about...
Probably a couple of three years out of college.
No, she's a...
She's a late 20s.
Late 20s.
Okay.
But she's gotten the degree and sometimes those degrees can take a little more.
Oh, yeah, my dad.
And she's trying to figure out what to do with her life.
She's currently kind of working as a sign girl for her dad.
I believe the people that tore all the signs out of the veil.
She's had the same boyfriend she's had since high school.
Same group of friends.
One of which is getting married.
Correct.
And she's just kind of stagnant in her life.
So she goes to this wedding.
And her boyfriend decides that's going to be the perfect opportunity for him to propose,
which she kind of wigs out, which leads to a couple other things that we're out,
which then lead her to be at a grocery store.
And as she's going in the grocery store, she's approached by Annika,
played by Chloe Grace Morets,
who basically convinced it's her to buy beer for her and her friends.
Because, here in nightly, Megan's logic is...
Well, somebody did it for me, I guess I should pay it forward.
They strike up a friendship.
And as Megan's worried about the wedding,
she tells her boyfriend that she's going to go to a week-long conference,
try to get herself together,
ends up spending the week at Annika's house,
where she meets Annika's father Craig, played by Sam Rockwell,
did we mention that Annika's character is high school,
as her friends are.
Yes, exactly.
And we're all cooking.
She wasn't engaged to Mark Weber, who plays Anthony her character.
Correct.
Correct.
And things go from there.
Exactly.
This movie directed by notorious chick flick director Lynn Shelton,
and written by Andrea Siegel.
Now, you can probably assume by listening to my voice right now,
not a chick.
But as a reviewer, I try to put...
I understand that I'm not the target demo for a film like this,
but I put that to the side,
because I want to evaluate a film on its merit.
That being said, let's talk about Lynn Shelton's directing,
Don, how did you feel to look at the film was?
Before we get, I think our buddies,
I like it.
You're a great market for them.
I want to see this film.
Love them.
Okay.
The look of the film?
Normal look.
I hate to say it.
The look of the film,
the direction of the film.
When I say that the look was par,
I'm giving it,
because there was nothing stand out for me on this,
on the look of the film.
It was an average looking film.
Yeah, nothing, nothing huge,
but that's fine.
You know, that doesn't make a film or break a film totally.
Okay.
I mean, it's a part,
but you know,
but you expect something like this kind of film.
For me,
it got a little artsy fartsy in a couple of points for me,
where there were like these close ups
that you could tell that the actors were just playing straight to it.
And then that kind of took me out of it.
It just,
the look of the film was just,
it was just a movie.
For me,
because there was nothing that really stood out for me.
Uh,
it's just one of those things.
I was like,
okay, so this is a thing.
Okay.
Let's talk about the performances.
I mean,
for me,
I felt like here and nightly was kind of mail in this end.
It was actually was channeling
Winona Ryder from Reality Bites.
For me.
Yeah.
Chloe Grace Morets,
always a great actress.
She did a good work.
She did a good work.
But for me, Sam Rockwell makes the film.
Her in that chemistry, but couldn't do it.
I thought that was between Rockwell and nightly.
Wasn't too bad at all.
I thought they clicked well in the film and everything.
His performance in general.
Yeah.
If he wasn't on the screen,
I didn't care.
Yeah.
Like he brought something to the table in this film
that it needed to be stomachable.
Like I said,
if he wasn't there,
I was like,
okay,
when's the next scene that he's going to be in?
Because he brought a lightness to it
and entertainment value for me.
Uh,
it's just...
And again,
I know I'm not the target demo for this film.
But at least give me something to work with.
I mean,
I've watched Chick-Flex.
I've enjoyed.
The other woman is a prime example.
That is a Chick-Flex.
Both you and I absolutely love.
It was great.
August Ostage County.
Oh, she's not of like that as much as I did.
But it was incredible.
Yeah.
This isn't even...
This film is not even in the driveway
that gets you to the street
that gets you to the traffic light
that gets you to the footage road
that gets you to the freeway
that gets you to the exit
that gets you to the other light
that gets you to the parking lot
of the ballpark
of either one of those films.
Totally.
Um,
I got to kind of put direction into this.
Okay.
There's only two things that made this movie
bearable for me.
Okay.
We know it one of them.
Yeah.
Exactly.
But number two,
there was some good comedy in this film.
Yeah, disagree with you.
Not great.
There were a couple good things.
There were moments.
Yeah.
That's what I'm saying.
And when I say moments
I can count them on one hand
with fingers left over.
And that's what I'm saying.
There was some good comedy in this film.
Not a ton.
There was a little bit.
And that made the film kind of watchable for me.
On the direction.
The moment Sam Rockwell's character cut came into the movie.
I go, I know how this thing is going to end.
Well, yeah.
But that's what Chick Flicks are.
They're not.
You don't go into a Chick Flick or a rom-com,
which I hate that phrase.
Going.
Okay.
That show me something different.
I mean, they're formulaic.
It's what they do.
You know, you've seen this story a bajillion times.
You know, that's going to end.
But, you know, and I will say from a performance standpoint,
somebody who was underutilized to me was Ellie Kemper.
Yes, she.
I love Ellie Kemper.
You know her from the office.
Yes, exactly.
Right on.
Right on.
Bonnie.
The music.
It's in the character.
But Ellie Kemper played Allison.
And on one hand, it's Ellie Kemper and everything she's ever done.
The cutesy girl.
Yeah.
But on the other hand, I could have used a little bit more of her in the film.
You know, I love her, and I think she does great work.
But I thought her character was highly underutilized.
Yeah.
They had some good characters in this film.
Now, and there were also a couple of scenes in this film that I thought were completely
unnecessary.
If you talk, but think about the scene with the sleepover,
where Anika's best friend comes over.
And they're talking on the phone.
Caitlin Deborah, who plays Misty.
Yeah.
Completely unnecessary.
Like, that happened.
And I was like, why do I, like, what does this contribute to this story?
This was predictable.
There was some, a couple good comedy moments.
They had some incredible actors.
But they tried putting this all together.
It just, instead of having one heck of a great cake,
they have the thing that just crumbles.
And they, they substituted sugar with salt and trying to make this cake.
It just seemed to me like, these were a bunch of different scene ideas that they had.
And they just threw them all together and put the same people in each one.

What message was this trying to say?
Friend of the show, Dave, he was mad about that.
Yeah.
He was not happy, friend of the show.
And I can see his point.
Yeah.
I can see his point.
I just, this movie is an hour and 39 minutes.
It's about an hour and 30 minutes too long.
Exactly.
I mean, I'm out of bin more happier just showing currently same.
Hi, I'm walking around.
I'm currently in there.
We go.

Try to do a couple jokes.
There we go.
I honestly, because I saw the trailer to this.
And I was like, oh, this looks kind of like kind of fun.
Exactly.
And I went there and I, the movie ended that was like, okay.
So that just happened.
Yeah.
I was highly disappointed in this film.
I can't, I don't anything that made, that made this variable for me is like I said the comedy.
Some comedy in there.
And for me, there wasn't enough of it.
No, for me, to me, to really go, okay, this is kind of fun.
This was, because at the start, you're kind of, where is this film going?
You kind of had it at the beginning.
It was kind of quirky.
Yeah.
And then it just fell flat.
Exactly.
Yep.
And now our 39 my life, I want back.
And again, you know, I know I'm not a 24 year old woman.
Exactly.
So I'm not who you're doing this film for.
I'm not like, but I'm ripping this thing.
This is, this was severely disappointing to me.
I mean, I can't even say that this was average.
This was way below average.
Now again, is it the worst film of the year?
No.
Because that award still goes to under the skin.
Yeah.
But this is in the ballpark.
We do a top 10 list of the worst of the year.
This could be exactly.
Unless we see some royal guns in the next 60 days.
There is a greater than zero chance that this will be on that list.
I just, man, I was so disappointed in this.
I really wanted this movie to be good because I'm a fan of all of these.
Yeah, we see some great comedy.
There's some great chick flicks that we've gave Kudos to.
But this in, that's a bunch.
Sorry, Cara.
You're getting ripped on this one.
Let's go to the final analysis, then.
I think we've got it covered.
What I say.
We don't give you thumbs up, thumbs down.
We don't give you grades, numbers, none of that stuff.
Our empire, our audience is better than that.
It's a two-prong question.
Question number one, would you see this film again?
If the answer is, yes, we go to the second question.
The second question is, how would you see this film again?
Would you pay for price?
Would you go to a twilight?
Would you go to a matinee?
Would you go early morning?
Would you see it in the second run at your local dollar theater?
Would you get it on Blu-ray or DVD?
Would you wait for it on cable?
Done.
Would you see this film again?
The only way I would ever see this film again is, if I had, my thing where I didn't
see my currently in some film and my DVD and Blu-ray player were broken.
And this was the only thing on TV that had currently.
That's the only way that I would ever watch this thing again.
I'm not even going that far.
I will not see this movie again.
I will not watch this movie.
Basically what I just said is I'd never watch this movie again.
Here nor there.
I will not watch it anywhere.
I will not watch this movie.
Sam, I am.
I will not do it.
Basically, I just say that.
I want to watch this movie.
I really disappoint you.
That's, yeah.
Only on extreme circumstances.
You're extreme to rest.
Yeah.
Well, we're sorry to be disappointed.
But we're going to give you a rest opinion on the show because that's what we do.
Yeah.
The Empire deserves better than just trying to fluff something up.
We're going to give them brutal honesty.
