My name is Rob, I am the executive producer of the Clubhouse podcast, and I got a big family
even though I'm only a child, I'll let you do the math.
But I'm not alone for this episode, join me across the desk as the official fact checker
of this show, and a man that comes from a section of a country where they say to word

You may know him as Fondongo, but his mom and name him Don Ford, I'm gonna call him Don Ford,

Actually, they can sometimes, but not as much as you think.
But they do say SOTY, whatever we do one of these, it is to review something, this is
no exception.
We've got the Baker Brothers, Jonathan and Josh, writing and directing a brand new film
with Miles Truitt, Jack Rayner, Dennis Quaid, Zoe Kravitz, James Franco, it's called Kien.

Here's what you need to know, I'm gonna give you the official im-dib on this.
Because, this synopsis can fall down a rabbit hole, which we talked about in the pre-show.
Yes.
Chased by a vengeful criminal, known to you as James Franco, the feds and a gang of other
worldly soldiers are recently released ex-con and his adopted teenage brother are forced
to go on the run with a weapon of mysterious origin as their only protection.
Yeah, I mean, that's how we gotta go with it, because the problem is if we start
explaining it, we're gonna be here for an hour and a half.
Yeah, and the movie's only an hour 45.
Yeah, so, just real quick, I mean, what happened, and this is spoiler-free, this is even
in the trailer, Eli's a kid, adopted parent is played to Hal Dennis Quaid, adopted
brother's Jimmy, played by Jack Rainier, and the mom passes away, adopted mother, and
you don't even see her in the film, all you know is she passed away, and Eli's having
a tough time.
And he likes to do some little scrapping and stuff like that to get a few bucks, like
abandoned warehouses or whatever, and get some copper tries to sell it, and one day when
he's out there scrapping, he meets, he finds some, like you see in the trailers, some
featureots that people look like they had a gun battle and finds this kind of weapon
looks like a featurest to gun grabs it.
And oh boy, there's where the sci-fi of the film part starts.
At the same time, his brother, Jimmy gets released from prison after serving six years,
and he gets out, and Jimmy trying to be the stand up guy for a con, goes up to a guy
played, named Taylor, played by Franco, and say I'm not trying to dodge it, but Franco
goes, I kept you alive from prison, you owe us $60,000.
And he doesn't have that on him?
No.
And that's where the kind of the melee starts to begin being spoiler-free.
And then things get weird, and they go on the run, and then you got this mysterious weapon
from the future.
All right.
Fair enough.
Well, let's get into it, man.
Yeah.
What'd you think?
Well, basically, when it comes down to it, there's only five people in this film.
Truett, Rainier, Quaid, Cravitz, and Franco.
Yeah, those are the big five.
Quaid, you could say minor role, Cravitz, minor to, you know, major role.
And Gavin Foxx, he plays Taylor's brother.
He does good in that part, believe it or not.
Okay.
But for his little part that he has, that's pivotal, but Franco plays that-
Michael B. Jordan has a small role in this.
Yeah.
Yeah, I mean, there's a lot of cast, but there's the big five.
But Franco, he plays that criminal where it's like, you don't want to make him mad.
Well, let me ask you this, because I read this in your written review currently located
at www.theclubhousepodcast.com.
That's our website.
Is it Franco?
Because it sounds like to me this is just Franco being Franco.
No, this is Franco playing someone even weirder than Franco.
Okay.
Ferragas.
He even kind of shows in a trailer where Franco, it's like he's cool, calm and collected,
but don't make him mad because he will subtly just do something horrible and still do it
subtly.
It's just that kind of like, I don't get mad, I just do it nice and calm, but I'm a thinker.
But watch out, don't get me mad or else, and he will back up that threat.
And he has the crew to back him up also in the way he just, so there's a lot of scenes
which I like to talk about, which I can't because we just got to like, yeah, be careful
this guy.
You don't want him mad at you and you made him mad.
So, but acting wise, he did really, really good.
Travis, you know, she just, it was her for her type of role.
Just that kind of person who halfway through meets up with him and kind of goes on the little
road trip with him, he could say, um, true it, plays Eli the main character.
He does good for a person his age.
He could have a lot of different emotions, happy, sad stuff like this and playing the big
lead.
He does good for the character and that situation that that character is in.
Eli's in the tough spot.
Maybe before this little melee happens, he's in a tough role and he plays that part well.
He does it just by his actions, his tone, everything, I was impressed by him, I thought he
did really good.
Fair enough.
Now, to the plot, it is what it is.
There's, I don't know if there's talk of another one possibly or they're making another
one.
I don't know what you heard.
Did they leave it like it could be?
Yeah, they left it like it could be, um, here's the problem with the plot.
It did interest me and I did like it.
The problem with the plot though is 15 minutes probably could have been cut out and they
have little tidbits in between of the future sick people coming back trying to get that
weapon.
You know, basically that weapon he has, he's seen in trailers, these future sick people
are trying to get that weapon and they add a little sci-fi through that.
But at the end, they wrap that part up too fast, I thought.
Do you see, here's a, they treated it like a side story where maybe they should not
have treated it like a side story?
Well, I understand trying to bring that part in, but as a little bit here, a little
bit here, a little bit here, but how they wrap it up in the, give the story in the film.
This is being spoiler free, but it's like, okay, you did all that in one minute.
You should have put more of the sci-fi in there because this is what the film is kind
of showing is a lot of the sci-fi, met and modern world, kind of like Terminator in
a way.
But imagine the Terminator is only in there for 20 minutes of the film.
Is that kind of make sense?
Yeah, it just, it wouldn't work if they only had the Android in there for 20, 30 minutes
in Terminator.
But this one, I think they should spend more time on the future sick and not wrapped it
up so fast.
And yeah, they kind of left it open.
There is a lot of suspension for disbelief in real life.
I know, I'm not talking to futuristic parts.
The part, yes, we're in today.
He meets, gets a gun, but the other parts of why they're on the run and all that stuff,
it's like anybody could figure out, no, no, no, no, no, don't give us that.
There's a few flaws, a little holes in the real world plot, which just did not work out
for me.
Okay.
So, did it take you out of it?
Yeah, I think it's like, really, you're doing that.
That's the reason why are you kidding me?
You're going to go that way, but still the act was good.
You know, it is what it is.
Is this going to be in the best act or best actor?
Is this going to be in the best picture or best cinematography or special effects?
No.
Okay.
No.
But some people, you're either going to like it or you're not going to like it.
Fair enough.
I thought it was there.
Okay.
I think they just should have had more sci-fi and not wrapped it up as much because that's
what they really kind of put in the trailer.
It's like it kind of teases us the wrong way.
Which may be mad.
I need a hug.
I'm not giving you a hug right now.
Okay.
Lost a wife later.
Logistically, that just doesn't work out.
Yeah.

No.

Down to an early morning on a weekend showing.
Down to a second run showing at the dollar theater.
Down to him actually leaving his house to go to Red Box.
Down to him streaming in on Netflix.
Down to him watching it on cable.
Don, would you see Ken again?
Yeah.

No, it doesn't get that changing.

But I say this Saturday afternoon or like you say early morning on the weekend.

That's what it is.
I mean, it's still fun.
But I'd be scared on that if they do a part two.
