My name is Rob I am the executive producer of the Clubhouse podcast and sometimes we do it for the
Empire and you'll understand what I'm talking about here in a minute but I'm not alone
joining me across the desk as he tends to do from time to time is the official fact checker of
this show and a man who likes kids and he likes naps but he doesn't like kidnapping there's none of
a should you may know him as fondongo but his mom and even don't ford I'm gonna call him don't
ford welcome sir you what happens if you just see a kidnapping in a park don't you you stop it
no you wake him up kid now I see what you see it's like my joke and it turned it around
oh yeah yeah yeah okay whatever we do one of these things it is normally to review something this
is no exception to that rule director Lewis Prieto boy I hope I got that right
close enough get the shot at the big leagues baby
with and you know it with howie berry academy award winner it is called kidnap for we start this
whole thing yes or ready to sing ready when you are and I did a great marketing I think Melissa the
whole crew are best friends we love them thank you and we love them so much for letting us come
see movies before they come out so we can review them for the empire and give them our thoughts
to help the empire make the best decisions for their entertainment dollar here's what you need
to know howie berry plays Carla Dyson she is a single mother she's a waitress struggling with her
seven-year-old son Frankie played by sage Korea they decide if she gives off work one day they're
gonna go hang out the park because that's what you do have a good time you know they live in New Orleans
lot going on course at the park you know music she gets a phone call from her lawyer dealing with
her divorce oops and as she takes his phone call as the title for the film might suggest
her son is kidnapped and for the next 82 minutes we get to watch this chase on I just want to say
this clean up front about this film that's here there's something that we talk about on this show
from time to time that we made Don hip to this concept early on in his career with the show
it is called suspension of disbelief what that means is sometimes you have to just leave your
brain at the door and roll with it yeah because if you drive a brand new minivan yeah
it means a Chrysler minivan yeah maybe maybe maybe you have three little buttons on your
rearview mirror yeah that might give you a free trial of something called on star yeah
I see what this is going down you know you're talking with me now yeah I leaned
to Charlotte was prepared to the show might my lovely sister Charlotte was with us and I leaned
over to her and I feel why don't get the phone that's gonna turn into a 90 minute commercial for
her own star and she's like you know it's a foul point also it is hard for me to believe
that traffic at any time in New Orleans is that thin during the day yeah maybe at 4 a.m.
like on a Saturday everybody's out yeah 4 a.m. on a Tuesday on a Saturday night of Sunday night
Monday morning yeah there's just so much you kind of just have to just go with in order to get
through this thing now I will say there's a couple of good jump scares in this there's a couple
of good little turns that maybe you want a client didn't see coming good jump scares we'll get into
that well I mean you talk about that in your written review currently located at www dot the clubhouse
podcast dot com which is our website but man there's a lot of disbelief and if you want to know
really if you if you really just want if you're craving the final analysis we're going to tease
it a little bit when the end credits began rolling Don was sitting two rows in front of me
normally Don doesn't stay through the credits I do unless it's a Marvel film because Don's been trained
yeah classically yes so Don gets up with the lovely and talented Mrs. Ford normally they just
get a haybub I'll talk to you later okay cool be safe you know whatever Don actually stops
as he stands up and looks at me and says okay watch gauge like there's no lead up
there's no we'll talk about it during the iTunes exclusive I need to know right now from you sir
what the watch gauge was and I was able to give that to him though watch gauge was 25 minutes
all right which is about average yeah but then you think about it from a um from a proportional
standpoint that's a third of the way through the movie yeah however however
my god does move slow this moves really slow
and I guess there's a lot of things that we can talk about and I don't want to spoil too much
of this film for people that actually do want to go see it because I'm not going to judge you
but you've been warned man this is slow and we talk a lot on this show too about the concept of
chewing scenery where an actor is so engrossed in the role and so much bigger than the scene
that the scenery around them goes away how the berry is the only actor I have ever seen
that tries to chew scenery and she can't like she just can't it's just not possible
now if I do see this again and I'll do a follow up if I do I'm going to count the number of times
she says the phrase oh god what's this say don't film or a movie easy teller easy wasn't going to go
there I did you did sorry it's out there but it was she was just so over the top and there was a
really weird scene where she's talking to god and if you show me where they are I'll never ask
for anything again which seemed really it was like they sat around at a table and went all right
we need to take every cliche and jam them into 82 minutes go
now all of that being said there was one thing I wanted to bring up about on
later okay all of that being said yeah I cannot in good conscience say this is a terrible film yeah
because I really wrestled with this driving home from the screen I was in the car and I was just
like I'm because that's what you do when you drive and I was just like I don't know that I can call
this a bad film it's not a great film it's not a Terrence Malik yeah it's not Steve in a world
where a Terrence Malik film exists this kind of film will always be better than that in a world where
the lost city of z exists this will always be better than that but not great well let me
bring up the on star please do well I did some you know in-depth research into this film which I
don't do that often that's usually up to us yeah yeah yeah well she came out with the
call in 2013 which I'll produce my WWE films yeah and there's a lot of similarities between
you're not the only person that said that to me I've talked to other people by the way we do
want to send a shout out to friends of the show the movie brothers who were there and they were
co-sponsors of the screening and we're so proud of them they really came up guys we were I was so
happy to see them up in front of that theater intro in the movie and they did a funny little bit
that unless you if you're not watching the movie brothers on YouTube what's wrong with you first
of all because I'm a huge fan and I've been friends with these guys for years but there is a bit
that aunt did to care that if you've watched them lately it was absolutely yes and if you didn't
get it I'll explain it later but we were talking and you're not like I said you're the only one
that brought that up to me for some what's the website and that would be the movie brothers

so you check them out because we're fans but camps did the same thing to me
he's like this is a lot like to call now their intro to the film was brilliant and I hope they
do this in the YouTube episode because they said when you look at films like monsters ball
and losing Isaiah how they bury as a parent on film very questionable in her parenting skills
which I thought was brilliant I just okay go ahead go ahead you're taking my stop I'm sorry I'm
sorry I'm I'm I'm I'm amped up about this and I've been waiting for two days to talk about this
well here's the other issue is that this film did not they finished filming this thing
in December of 2014 which explains why when you watch the film her inspection sticker says it
expires in December of 2015 yeah exactly so because I noticed these things so it was real close to
that time of when the call was released when they started filming this thing now why they set
on this thing for two and a half almost three years is beyond me oh no it's not oh no it's not
it's it's so you know the correlation between the call and this one I could understand
because they're so close together when this one is released and when they filmed this thing
but back to the on star not every car in 2014 minivan had on star and that's more of a newer
thing where they're adding it to everything yeah figure that car was probably two three years old
so maybe that was a 2010 where on star maybe was not my cars 2012 and it hasn't okay but I'm
just saying I'm trying to give that little and that's fair you have a fair point yeah but we are
mad but and there's and we see her and here's my other thing and we'll talk about the semantics
of this off air because it's a spoiler there is a certain scene in the film where something happens
and then something ties to something else about probably two thirds through the way of the way through
and when it happens I felt bad because I was about to start laughing give me a little clue um
it's it's the last scene with the minivan mute the mic for one second
okay with me now yeah okay I felt bad because I like if she does this I'm gonna start laughing
and she did and I started to giggle but I wasn't alone so I didn't feel bad
it's one of those moments so you're like hold on now now and what's this I didn't understand
every time she sped up she always sped up to 60 I never understood she didn't want to
she didn't want to get run you know take it for speeding or did she but this
and but again this film is such a mess but it's not a bad film and that's the weird thing about
it for me like I can't sit here and tell you this is a terrible film I have seen worse films this
year I have seen worse films in the last four years that we've been doing this now question to you
I will say before you cheer question okay if this was 1985 this movie would have been amazing
because this is an 80 style thriller go ahead now the keep going now I just lost my
train of thought I forgot about we'll just think about what you were thinking about before you
forgot what you were thinking about because like okay this is the disbelief
the suspension of disbelief which I put in my written video WWW that co-boss podcast
which is our website me as you did I put on there that you know this film has so many things in
here it's like this suspension of disbelief but they act in this film that everything they want
you to believe you know what I'm saying they go elaborate on that okay what I'm saying is there's
so many things that are just yeah right the on star the this the that there's so many things
out of there that's not so real light right but in this film they've tried to press it down to
you that there is no suspension of disbelief in this film oh no they sell it they try to sell it
they sell now I will tell you there's a cameo in this film that I don't know that you caught
there is a scene where a pedestrian is hit by a car where the traffic stopped and all that
okay you remember the the young lady to get set by the by the car okay and
Halle Berry kind of saves her from getting plowed yeah yeah yeah that pedestrian by the
by that's by the one she went to the police station right up yeah okay that pedestrian yeah
played by former TNA and WWE women's wrestler Taryn Tarell well that was Taryn Tarell man it was
she's in the credits okay of course I said it in Charlotte was like who am I come on you're better
than this but I mean they do sell it don't get me wrong like they sell this thing solid
there's no tongue in cheek there's no now there is a way the film could have gone that I'm glad
it didn't and we'll talk about that off air I'm glad it didn't go the way I was expecting because
Charlotte and I were talking as I was walking her to her car and she was like you know what I
thought the same thing and I'm glad it didn't go that way it's just such a weird thing to me
because I this is not a great film but it's not a terrible film either it's one of those
it'll make money for a few days because this is the kind of thing that teenagers on a Friday night
are gonna go do because it's the big new thing and maybe 30 years ago I'm not saying I wouldn't
but in 2017 different question yeah the budget on this 21 million dollars 21 million
which I think she probably got about 13 of it yeah now the thing is
tell my mind just went out again um I still like some of the acting though again not bad I mean
I mean I'm really very you know I'm not a fan yeah but I kind of roll with it not not mine
Nicole Kim and but I liked you know um again she did good as the one of the kidnappers the lady
uh but temple I loved his role because he didn't say much he did all this with he was the there
there's a male and female kidnapper he is the male um yeah I thought he was really really good
he didn't say much he did it with this acting very much expression very much body language
uh we're not going to ruin for you where it goes because they don't really tell you where everything
is going until the end of the film which I again I don't want to ruin this for anyone we try to be
sported free uh man but I will say this the disbeliefing minor spoiler and three two don't say
the one right at the beginning at the park when the kidnapping happens uh-huh what does she drop
what does she drops her phone and that sells the fact plus the plus the battery was dead
the battery dies that's what I just go okay this but what but that was one of those we're showing
you that she's not gonna have a phone I saw that like oh god no but which uh but that my brain
went to yeah you know you have this other thing in the car than you've got on star I'm just saying
that there's a lot of and am I looking too far into this probably I'd probably am but that's
what I do if you've ever listened to this show I overanalyze everything it's my job on this show
and has been for over four seven hundred episodes total it's just one of those things that's just
like you know this this movie is kind of one of those words you know it is a popcorn film yeah
it is a popcorn film like you like to say leave your brain at the door absolutely you want a
wild ride with just some but here's the thing that made me mad they try to give those cheap
real suspense things at the end you know the scary moments on you yeah they tried to oversell
yeah yeah yeah yeah when she when she gets to where she's going yeah yes I agree with you that
took way too long but I was like come on let's pick up the pace they're trying to put the suspense
into the film cheaply you know and in that in that sequence yes but there's a couple other places
that I thought they did a good job on it too yeah but I think they tried shoving it down too much
and one other thing the one thing which I kind of I think I told you know my my level life
white faith and I think I might told you I told John Strange for the show for the show no he was
there though I saw it on social media actually because I drove home oh no I didn't know I did yeah
he's gonna get Uber and I'll give you right home you close to where I'm at no no I told him on this
over there you know we're told him on this what's that is the how the last right before the credits
okay right before the credits you hear some form of audio being spoiler free okay of certain
people saying certain things right well that's what audio is yeah and I say
what they said in that thing trying to tie it up it's like no I would not say I disagree with
you there because I think that that that just filled in the final piece of the puzzle for everybody
even after that you for one second and one more time okay hold on
I I get what you're saying there but it's again that kind of just
just a whole motif of the rest of it I can understand everything else I said that but with those
little sentences they're saying no police departments going to say you know but one thing that you
know John Strange brought up too which you know which we're driving home if some of the angles
where they just try to pan at this weird angle all the way through of her driving and you see the
close-up or her driving there's probably 30 minutes where you just see her face her face her face her
face we get it it's her face and that was why when they ran the end credits and I was like there's
this many people in this movie like these end credits should be like six people all some of the
angles in these drive scenes were horrible and I think I know why because they trying to film and
they want to do it on some road and they don't want to show the outside you can only see the
outside of the car yeah but still that because they did too much of that too anything else for
me to the final analysis do we have to we always have to do the final analysis or the way we do the
final analysis on the show we're not going to give you thumbs up thumbs down we're not going to
give you a letter grades numbers wheels because we just don't have any we're gonna ask two questions
question number one is would you see this film again if the answers know we're done here if the
answers yes and the question becomes how far are you willing to go to see it again from the
best of the best of the worst of the best here's the spectrum full price at a theater twilight
matinee early morning second run at the dollar theater actually leaving your house to go to red box
streaming on Netflix waiting for a cable don would you see this again I'd say yes all right how far
are you willing to go I would say something like it has a recommendation if you want to have a
fun time Netflix it or HBO it you know I'm right there with you this is one of those I can say I
wouldn't watch it again but I also can say that I wouldn't go out of my way to do it like this is
one of those I see on cable go I this was I remember this was a thing let me just make see if it's
yeah I remember if I want to I have to bring it since it came to mind the scene with I'm gonna say
is motorcycle uh-huh uh-huh uh-huh it's called CB yeah well there's a couple of different points
of that too yeah but again suspension of disbelief kids well if there's even no uh you know we're
gonna leave it at that we got to thank listener by yet all right in the great marketing they're
