Also joining us for this particular edition is the official fact checker of this show.
And a man who could tell you HSN QVC all of them.
He's all over it.
You may know him as Fondongo, but his mom and even Don Ford.
I'm going to call him Don Ford.
It's been about 20 years since I watched one of those channels.
It's been about 10 seconds.
The boss that I wear around my neck was bought for me by my mother in the early days of QVC.
You're probably asking yourself, why are you talking about this?
Well, it ties into what we're here to talk about today.
Whenever we do one of these, it is to review something and this is no exception.
Today we are reviewing the latest film directed by powerhouse director David O. Russell.
He also brings the stars of those two films back, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert General Bradley Cooper,
and a brand new film called Joy.
Loosely based on the story of the lady that invented the miracle mob, played by Jennifer Lawrence.
Basically, she's a single mother of two who's divorced husband lives in her house.
Her mom lives in her house, her dad ends up living in her house as well.
She loses her job in airline, having difficulty trying to keep making ends meet.
So she has this idea for a mob.
That's, you don't have to buy one mob, you don't have to keep buying sponges and stuff.
And the quest that she goes on to try to make a go of this thing.
Also in this film, Edgar Ramirez, Diane Ladd, Virginia Madsen, Isabella Rosalini, Elizabeth Rome, how you doing.
Susan Lucci is in this thing.
Jimmy John Louie, the Haitian from Heroes is in this for a bit.
Quite shocked to see him.
Ken Howard is in this as well.
Is it good? Is it bad? Is it indifferent?
That's what we're here to talk about.
Before we begin, two things. I thought it was magic mob.
Not miracle mob.
I could have been wrong, Chad.
It's miracle mob.
I thought it was pretty sure.
But number two, we got to think of best friends out like John.
I like integrated marketing.
He's such good care of us.

You guys are wonderful.
For all the screenings that they give to us.
We'll just start with the story itself.
This thing runs just a little over two hours, two hours and four minutes is your run time.
I thought it started out a little clunky.
But the deeper it got, the better it got for me.
There was more intensity to it.
It kind of held my attention more chat.
Yeah, it did seem like it was kind of getting its legs underneath it for the first third or maybe quarter.
And then once it started to find its stride, it kind of hit a really nice even pace.
Agreed done.

I kind of put on there's what I call the pre in post mob part of the film.
Okay.
For the pre-invent where she really gets this thing going.
And so I think it's two kind of different films in this film.
It's shorter as this lady trying to keep the glue on this family.
And she did that very well.
It just like doesn't this lady get a break.
Don't you feel for her?
I mean, and she winds up at QVC in its infancy with one of these sales directors played by Bradley Cooper.
Yeah.
And then after that, it once that the invention gets it going then it's another film.
Now it kept me interested all the way through.
I really didn't thought I thought this thing did really, really didn't drag it all.
It kept me interested who most of the film.
I was pretty impressed on that.
And let's just put it out there in front street.
David O. Russell knows how to shoot a film.
Yes.
The guy knows what he's doing.
He knows these three principal actors especially.
And knows how to shoot them well too.
It seems like a really good given take.
Of course, dinner or place her father.
Virginia Madson plays her mother.
Isabella Rosalini plays Chudy, a lady that starts to date her father.
Who ends up, you know, she's a little well off.
She ends up taking quite a financial risk when it comes to helping.
Joy get this thing done.
Again, loosely based on a true story.
But I thought that it was incredibly well shot.
It almost kind of like silver linings playbook for me.
It was almost shot very girly.
If that's a real word.
And that's one thing I really put is I like to look in this film.
There are some tough times in the beginning.
And it's usually dark outside stuff like that cloudy.
The look.
I mean, everything all the props, the cars, everything was basically historically correct
at the time when you think about it.
When you look back.
Oh no.
You put a lot of detail into this.
Yeah.
I look really impressed because it made the feel of what was going on in the film at the time.
And it set the mood very very well.
You can't that mood of, you know, she keeps trying to get started and trying to get started
and trying to get started.
And you're just, you get to the point where you're start to cheer for her despite everything.
That's going on.
I thought that her portrayal was excellent.
She really kind of gets into a nice little pocket of who joy is.
Yeah.
And really kind of portrays that well.
Her and Bradley Cooper have some of the best chemistry Hollywood.
Oh yeah.
No kidding.
Three words.
Silver linings playbook.
I mean, if that doesn't convince you then you're either dead or you're blind and deaf
because you can't hear or see anything.
Silver linings playbook is I've gone on record this thing.
It's one of my favorite films with the past 10 years.
I was impressed with Edgar Ramirez playing her ex-husband Tony.
Oh, he's a good.
Am I am I wrong here?
Was he the guy that played the second crow in City of Angels?
He's talking about Ramirez?
Yes.
Well, I mean, look for that for you.
Because I meant to look that up and it was awesome.
And I'm like, it seemed like that's where I know that name from.
You know, Cooper himself.
I've gotten to the point with him.
Where, and you and I talked about this driving home from the screening.
If you're going to recast Indie, get this guy.
Yeah.
Like Bradley Cooper could play Indiana Jones.
He's got that smoothness.
He's got that ruggedness at the same time.
I am just a huge fan of this guy.
And I have been a huge fan of this guy since.
Elias.
When he was on that show.
My not leading role shout out goes to.
Dasha Blanco who.
I'm a fan of Orange is a new black.
And that's where she is.
You all got her star.
Play it's her best friend.
Yes.
And there's like one scene where I'm going to say is where she makes a call.
Yes.
And it just that comedy she adds and then that friendship and the bond they have.
They're like the best friends.
What she has time for, friend, which is never.
Chad, you would know Edgar Ramirez from Wrath of the Titans as Aries.
He also played Larry from Ground Branch in zero dark 30.
Okay.
That would be really all you might know him from.
Okay.
I need to look up to the guy.
Is it played the crow in the city of Angels.
And then that's where I'm driving nuts.
But I just I thought all the way.
Yeah.
I have no complaints.
My little thing about the whole plot Lawrence storyline.
I thought it put her too much on the pedestal.
Where.
And it's just a little minor thing.
I mean, this is my if I had a complaint.
It put where she did nothing wrong.
It's the stars lining against her.
She made she makes mistakes.
But it didn't really show because going in business starting new.
You're going to make mistakes.
Oh, no.
She made mistakes.
Yeah.
But it's like it's someone else's fault.
It was someone else's fault.
Like the dad's fault or something.
I mean, I can see that's if I had a minor complaint.
If I had something about something, that would be it.
Some of it was her naïve.
Yeah.
But I see where you're coming from.
You're thinking of Vincent Perez.
Thank you.
Okay.
Well, I mean, the acting wasn't credible.
The story wasn't credible.
It's just that that would if I had a complaint.
That would be.
I really thought Virginia Madsen here as her mother was phenomenal.
Didn't even recognize her.
Her and Diane, lad, both.
I mean, I caught Virginia Madsen early on.
Diane, lad, was drives like, who is that?
Playing her grandmother.
I honestly thought that Virginia Madsen was.
Oh, what's your name from ex file?
Juggling.
Yeah.
I thought it was her with a really with a really heavy makeup.
I'm not telling you who really I didn't realize who she wasn't.
Oh, the credits was Elizabeth Rome.
Yeah.
When you put it on like that to that one.
Huge law in order fan.
And I've been a huge fan of her since that show.
And she was a heavy player.
And she crushed this as the sister.
Who's really kind of helped hold the family business together.
And doesn't feel like she's getting her due.
While Joyce getting all of this other stuff.
Yeah.
She feels like Joyce like her Marsha Marsha Marsha.
Exactly.
Excellent job by this entire cast.
Overall.
But if I've got to put this in the pantheon of David O. Russell.
I thought it was better than, uh, better than American hustle.
But not as good as silver linings.
I agree.
I agree.
I have said for years that I really thought that American Russell was a bit overrated.
I don't know that it was a best picture nominee.
You know what I mean?
Yeah.
It was either.
It was good.
But I didn't think it deserved been odd.
I thought the performances were strong.
I would rank this above three kings.
Above flirting with disaster.
I haven't seen I Heart Huckabee's or the fighter.
You need to see the fighter.
I do.
I've been watching the fighter for years.
Just haven't taken the time to do it.
But when you're going in his, what you would call his big two movies right now.
That I have seen.
Again, above American hustle.
Silver linings playbook to me is still the gold standard.
Yeah.
Especially when you want to rank with these three actors that he works with.
I know there was a lot of talk about him being involved in possibly making the P.S.
Three, four game uncharted into a film.
I heard that with the bulk of this cast, but with Mark Wahlberg playing the lead.
I'd rather see Bradley Cooper.
Why?
No.
Pretty much my opinion on that too.

Have you ever watched Ontaroch?

What's all I could think of when he came to when he started?
Don't forget he's from Paris, Texas.

And is it transforming the part?

I thought I could think of half the top of my head when he comes to one target.

Anything else we wanted to talk about before we get to the final of that.

We like to do things a little bit differently on our show.

Twilight, Matt and A.
Early morning on a weekend.
Would you watch it second run at our theater?
Would you venture out of your house to get it from red box?
Would you stream it on Netflix?
Would you wait for it on cable?
Dawn, would you see this again?
Definitely.
How far you want to go?
I'd say twilight.
Okay.
So just right on the press.
Yeah, because yeah, it was good, but it wasn't silver lining.
But still very good.
Highly recommended.
I thought they put too hurt too much on the pedestal.
But still highly recommend it.
Chad, would you see this again?
I'd watch it again, yeah.
Okay.
How far are you willing to go?
I'd watch it on first run cable.
I would see it again.
On a repeat viewing.
I think I'd be willing to go Matt and A on a weekend.
But for a first viewing, I would recommend it full price.
Oh, would you?
Okay.
I think it's an excellent film.
It's a really good film to remind people that perseverance is a thing that you can.
You know, just because it doesn't work right the first time doesn't mean it's not going to work.
And when someone tells you, no, keep fighting.
Exactly.
You know what I'm talking about?
Absolutely.
Absolutely.
And, you know, go check this film out.
Great performances.
If you're a student of film, you'll enjoy the way.
It's shot and produced.
Give me this as an underdog film any day before you give me Rudy.
I don't know.
I did disagree on that.
I thought Rudy is.
We know the differences in the opinion.
Oh, yeah.
Oh, yeah.
I love it.
But regardless, we got to think Josh and everybody out like our best friends.
