in the most important person to this specific episode is the official fact checker of this show
and a man that he's not very superstitious so he doesn't need writing on the wall
you may know him as fun don't go but his mom and even don't ford I'm gonna call him don't
ford welcome sir tomorrow is my birthday I'm Friday the 13th in October okay so you think
he's pretty much just shot everything I just said sometimes I just do the show for me
I liked compliments I got she got me a present I'm aware of that so yeah it's so sweet
we do record this today before your birthday yeah she got to be some Cheetos and Gatorade what a sweet
lady I know three things about dawn stealers Gatorade Cheetos that's the holy trifecta if you don't count
his wife well I can't purchase yeah it's not just say I'm saying like she's not for sale you know
outside of his wife that's the trifecta the only thing you could have done was something Jimmy
Buffett related that would have been okay I'll add that to the list for Christmas got it whatever we
do one of these it is to review something and this is no exception to that because it's October
why wouldn't there be horror films I don't do horror films but Dawn did and it's time to talk
about happy death day for what'sorth this whole thing yes sir we gotta take marry and then everybody
do big days some of our favorite people thank you guys so much we kind of had to divide and conquer
on this one.
You sell one as another, but yeah.

She's good people.
Yeah.
Alright, so basically here's what you need to know.
Groundhog Day with knives.
Uh-huh.
That's it.
That's all you need to know.
That's it.
It's a young lady who keeps living the same day over and over and over again, which ends
up with her getting killed until she can figure out who the killer is.
Exactly.
There you go.
It's an hour and 36 minutes, which is a little bit longer than your average horror film.
But Dom, let's just dive right in.
Okay.
Because I'm looking at some of the images from this film.
Yeah.
It's bad enough that it's a horror film.
Yeah.
But the masked killer in this?
Could we find a creepier mask, please?
Well, you could do this.
Dear God, that's creepy.
Yeah.
Hockey mask from Friday of 13th, I don't know, or maybe the Michael Myers.
So you've got the main character tree, is that her name?
Yeah.
Played by Jessica Roth.
This was directed by Christopher Landon.
Yeah.
You may know him from Disturbia.
He's a writer for Disturbia Paranormal Activity 97, uh, Scout's Guide to the Apocalypse.
Which I did like.
I did like that one.
I never did get to see that.
And I'll get into that a little bit.
He also directed Paranormal Activity, the marked ones, those would be really all you'd
know him from.
But he has some, you know, horror skins a little bit, you know, not a lot of writing credits
from from the horror genre.
But you know, starting off in the film, you know, the look, it takes place at a college
university in Louisiana, and it's, you know, the mascot is, you don't really get the
mascot's name.
It's just the baby with the mask.
Creepy?
Yeah.
I mean, not to go to that college, and you think you want to be fighting, you know,
the fighting hawks or something.
They got a baby.
It's like the fighting creepy baby.
Yeah.
I don't know.
And I would fight a creepy baby.
I'm telling you now, the creepy baby rolls up on me.
I'm on guard.
Okay.
But no, go, go to the film, actually.
It is like you say gran hog days with, with knives.
But on the pot, it's an hour and a half long.
I did thought it, I thought it flowed well.
There is a little bit of suspension of display.
It is rated PG 13, which, you know, there's not a ton of horror.

I put on there that there are a couple scenes where they try to give that fake scare.
They try to, you know, have the music and walking slowly and open up the curtain and all
that stuff.
Not too much of that.
Not a lot of jump scares as the kids like to say.
No, no, no, which was kind of, which was good, which is a, you know, breath of fresh
air.
But on the pot, it's, yeah, it's a horror film.
I don't think this would scare you too much because in a way with the scouts guide to
the apocalypse, if you ever saw that, it's the same director you could tell.
This film had some good comedy in it.
Really?
Yeah.
There was a lot of stuff.
That seems to be the direction these kind of films are going because people are saying
the same thing about it.
They're saying the same thing.
Like you said, about scouts got into the apocalypse.
Yeah, you could tell it's the same director because I did like that little mix of comedy
and stuff like that.
She starts talking to my characters are tree played by Roth and Carter played by Israel
Bussard.
Okay.
And they do get his elites.
I don't say any Academy Award nominations coming up for him, but just like a Roth actually
was in La La Land.
Yeah.
So she has, she's starting to get up there.
But them to, they got the good chemistry.
She starts off as a lady who wakes up.
She wakes up and in Carter's dorm room, not knowing what happened to that before night.
Yeah.
Not knowing who Carter is and all that and she goes through her day.
It's her birthday and she goes through the whole day kind of, she kind of has that attitude.
I'm better than everybody kind, maybe that little bit of Paris Hilton and her kind of thing.
But then when she starts getting killed and starts to realize, when she starts getting
killed every day, because you know, you can't, you can die more than once in this movie
apparently.
Yeah, exactly.
The problem is is that every time she gets killed, it leaves like a little scar on her.
So she has to figure this out before she's permanently, I can't say.
But there's one thing.
I hate anyone that could kill it a little bit.
There's one scene during this, during this film where it's doing that fast pace day after
day after day.
It's kind of like in Groundhog Day where they go about four or five, six days in about
a 10 second frame.
Right.
Kind of doing that fast forward.
At that point, it got funny.
There was a lot of comedy added because she's like spying on people in the end of things
and all of a sudden she's spying on someone else trying to figure out if that was a killer
and all of a sudden she looks behind the slash, you know, and all that.
So yeah, kind of you can say that.
So a little bit of that slapstick in a way.
And I did find the enjoyable.
I did like that mix of the comedy with the horror.
It's not trying to just scare you with the cheap scares fair enough.
But there is a little bit of suspension and disbelief because me being so technical, like
if she in a first scene, she wakes up, does the talking, does all this other stuff, right?
And she spends a little time in the room.
I could couple days later, she just wakes up, runs out of the room.
But then everything else is still on time.
But that would have been like a minute delay.
Okay.
Yeah, no.
So there was a little bit of that in there.
But scenery wise, I like to say, Nuri, there wasn't too much CGI or anything like that.
You know,
Doesn't need to be in a film like this.
But with the suspension disbelief, it wasn't too bad.
It was it.
Do the performances kind of fit the genre so nobody's trying to overact the thing because
they know what it is and they accept it for what it is?
Yeah, I know give it to Roth.
She plays a character well of somebody who I'm a stuck up person on that first day.
And as she realizes how important life is over time, she starts to mend these, you know,
her attitude changes as a person.
Okay.
And then when at the final, you could say the final days before the film, because we
of course were spoiler free.
Right.
She's a totally different person than she was the first day in a character grows.
So in that kind of acting aspect, I found that very good of her kind of like in Groundhog
Day.
Yeah.
Same kind of thing.
But she does it very, very well.
Carter of course played by Israel, you know, he's just that steady character, but of course
he won't change much because he doesn't know when you know, it's not the, he's not really
living the same day.
So she does retain her memories today before, but no one else does.
Yeah.
So it's like the new day.
It's kind of like in way 50 for states, also that kind of thing.
But I want to have long.
So I thought timing was good.
Didn't seem too long to, to direct out the, if it was pace pretty well, it wasn't too
any downsides to it.
You know, I would say the, if they're going to do it, it has to be you arrive at this
time every day.
And so there was a kind of screw up where she walks out of the dorm room and everything
happens, but she left the room so fast on the, it wouldn't happen.
That's this may be a technical, but you know, this film is what it is.
That's the best way.
So we call critic proof.
It's going to make a ton of money because it's a horror film in October, released on
Friday the 13th.
Yeah, it's going to get that genre.
It's going to get that people who are going to come regardless because it's a horror film.
But, you know, it's just that leave your brain at the door and have, if you want a little
bit of a good scare with some comedy, I think you'd actually be surprised on this Rob because
I know you hate horror films.
I do.
Very much so.
Not a fan.
I just hasn't figured out that I do too.
But it's, it's kind of like the film walk.
You hate heights, but you're able to get through the film, the walk.
You know what I'm saying?
This is kind of, I can see where you would correlate that.
It's a bit of a way to go, but I can see it.
This film is what is best, is best way that the great Gary Murray used to say, this film
is just what it is.
Okay.
It's just, it's not going to, I know what this film is about.
I know who it's tailored for.
And I'm not going to get too technical because this is just one of those films where it's
not going to try to win best picture.
It's not going to try to change your life.
It's just come in, maybe get a little bit of scares, have some fun.
Have a good time.
You ready to get to file analysis?
Let me do the file analysis on the show.
We're not going to give you thumbs up, thumbs down.
We're not going to give you letter grades, knives, anything like that.
I'm going to ask Don two up to two questions.
Question number one is, would you see this film again?
If the answers know, then we're done here.
But if the answer is yes, the follow up question will be, how far is Don willing to go
to do so?
From the best of the best of the worst of the best, here's the spectrum, full price at
the theaters, twilight, matinee, early morning, second run at the dollar theater, actually
leaving your house to go to red box, streaming it on Netflix, waiting for it on cable.
Don, would you see this film again?
Yeah, what?
How far are you willing to go?
I'm willing to give it the Saturday afternoon or matinee.
Okay.
So not a pretty far up there, but not all the way.
Yeah, because it is what it is.
If you're going to go see this in the theater, don't play the full price for it, but go
in an afternoon, have a good time at the mall, you know, and you're having that Saturday
afternoon kind of thing.
Because one thing I'll say, it kind of even makes fun of the horror films, even Ground
Hog Day.
That's even mentioned.
It would part of the film.
Let me just ask you this real quick before we wrap this up.
Does the PG-13 rating hurt it?
Would it be better if they had gone for the R?
I think no, because it's going to leave it open to the younger people, the teens being
able to serve it.
There it is.
I think it's a smart marketing move to make it a PG-13 for a wider audience.
Yeah.
Like you don't see you really getting stabbed or anybody so they can make it that PG-13,
so it's not that really brutal.
You see your look up and all of a sudden here comes an eye coming down, but you don't see
or get killed.
So I mean, they intentionally, which I think is a good thing, did not show overdue the
gore.
It is Christopher Landon's happy death day for wearing this whole face.
Yes, sir.
Yeah, I think you and Mary Ann and their band Slifox, Xenany, Xenany, Xenany, Xenany, Xenany.
