He directs a brand new film and it's called Gringo.

Okay, so let me run the cast for you first.

Now when I say Nash Edgerton and then I say Joel Edgerton, that's not coincidence. That's their brothers.
Yeah, that much I did know.
Charlize Theron, David O'Yellowow, Tandy Newton, Amanda Saferead, Paris Jackson.

I saw that last night I was quite surprised.
She ain't in it much but she is in it effectively.
Yes.
Her role is one that advances a certain part of it and we're going to talk about that here in a minute.
Okay.
David O'Yellowow plays Harold Solienka.
He is a middle management supervisor for a pharmaceutical company.
Okay.
And in this part of a pharmaceutical company they have a plant down in Olmehiko that he keeps up with.
And apparently he, there's been some inventory that's disappeared.
So he's got to go down there and figure out what's going on but his boss Richard Rusk played by Joel Edgerton
and somebody else who's something else in the company and we're not, I don't know if we ever quite know.
She's a senior VP.
Elaine Markinson played by the Charlize Theron.
They're going to go with him.
It's not that they don't trust him but they've got to take care of some things themselves.
They don't trust him because there's other things he doesn't know.
Okay.
And then I'll hell breaks loose.
That's about as deep as I want to go because there's a lot going on here and I don't want to give away too much.
Understandable.
Understandable.
Tandy Newton plays his wife.
And then there's Amanda Saferid and Harry Tredway who play a couple that are unrelated to everything else but they end up crossing paths.
Okay.
I really enjoyed this film.
It looks fascinating.
It's about an hour 50 if I'm not mistaken and I was correct on that.
Amazon Studios really starting to come on strong.
You know, we've talked for about, what was it?
Don was it Macbeth two years ago?
I don't remember what we did Macbeth.
The fast vendor thing.
I want to say it's been about two years now.
They've really started to get some quality products under their belt and this is one of them.
Or yellow in comedy?
Great.
Unexpectedly great.
I mean, he was on the Joel McHale show with Joel McHale this week.
So I got to see a little bit of his comedy chops.
Right.
But going in from my perspective where I'd only seen him in movies like Selma and then seeing how hilarious this man can be, priceless.
And the second back-to-back weeks with Joel Edgerton in films.
It's completely different films.
Yeah, at least he emoted in this one.
You leave that man alone.
He is great in this as the boss that's kind of slimy, but he kind of doesn't want to be, but he kind of still is.
Also in this is the Charlottal Copoli.
A huge fan of that guy.
He is great in this.
This thing takes a lot of turns on you.
There's a lot of this person may not be.
And I do want to say if you're a fan of the Beatles.
Do you want to something for you in this too?

Actually, I think the association with Amazon goes a little bit farther back.
Because I remember we reviewed Dark Places, which was also a Charlize Theron film.
You did.
I didn't.
I was part of that one.

Yeah, I was on that.
Yeah, but you guys wouldn't saw this one.
That was the first ones we did with them.
But this movie is a lot of fun.
It's paced incredibly well.
Well, and to add to that point, the pacing is very interesting because it's almost like it does three different types of movies at various times.
I mean, although I will say the second act does weigh down a little bit.
Not enough to take me out of it, but here's my thing.
And you and I, Alex, you and I talked about this as we were walking to the car last night.
With Genro, who could not be with us tonight, but she was with us.

The sub plot with Amanda Saferid and Harry Tredway.
Probably not that necessary.

Now, she plays a part in the journey, although small.
If you took her out of it, you might have a little bit of a difference.
But you could take him out of it, and it wouldn't have made any difference at all.
Right.
And, you know, I was thinking about that more after the fact.
You could almost remove Sandy Newton as well.
Almost.
You could almost, but her character is important to twice.
Harold's break.
His journey, you could say.
Also, a guy that doesn't have a huge role in this, but I really enjoyed him was Yulvestez, who plays Angel.
I liked him a lot.
You know what?
One of the things is, is he's perfect, even separate from anything later in the movie, if only to set up how likable the Harold character is.
And how much he cares about people.
He reminds me of a young, less gruff, Robert Davy.
That is a very good pull.
There is also a reference in this, and I'm still trying to figure it out.
And I asked Andrew, the ginger ninja, was my plus one.
And I asked him, and he wasn't sure.
I can see that.
I pulled him up on Iron Man.
Yeah.
He does look like a more...
Do I call it or do I call it?
Yeah, that's...
Also, there's a reference to something in this film, and it's driving me absolutely crazy.
And I got to figure it out, and I don't want to talk about it on here, because it's a minor spoiler.
Okay, because I haven't been part of this conversation.
It has to deal with his first dealings with Charlton Copley's character.
But, it's one of those films that, even though it takes some twists and turns, some of it you kind of see, and some of you don't see coming.
But even the ones I saw coming a mile away, I was still like, oh, this is going to be cool when this happens.
Yes.
It's just a lot of fun.
It reminded me, and I'm not saying all the way through, but there's a couple of sequences that are very Tarantino-esque.
I kind of figure it out.
And it's delivery, which is not a bad thing.
No, actually, I would venture to say it's like Tarantino without trying to push it.
Exactly.
It's got that same vibe without trying to be that vibe.
Yeah, I want to ruckus in this.
Oh, yeah, I want to ruckus in this as well.
It has a very small, Cameron Howe shows up in the strangest places.
There's one thing I just wanted to yell.
Did you see anything fun today?
But I didn't know. It's on a movie theater.
I respect the process.
Did he pay for you yesterday?

Interestingly enough, I want to see if they cut any with him and Kenneth Choi, because Kenneth Choi also had a cameo in this,
but didn't do much really.
And Edgerton brings the slime when he wants to bring the slime.
There's a genuine part.

I did include in the review where there were genuine points where I was like,
is Charlie is there on this terrible of a person in real life?

I was kind of like, she's so good in this.
And the other part to go with that is Joel Edgerton, this slimy in real life.

Because I don't know if they know they're acting.
I will tell you, it starts with a flash forward.
Very briefly, but yes.

And so as soon as I figured that out, I was like, okay, we're about the next thing we're going to see is X number of time ago.
And then it goes back two days.
Okay.
But to do their credit, it's not the whole movie.
Right.
It catches itself having your effect.
It catches itself up fairly quickly.
Which was a pleasant surprise.
Yes.
This movie is a lot of fun.
Don't bring the kids.

There's one scene that gets a little graphic.
Where somebody is being made an example of?
Well, you can also say this with the, you know what?
This is the second great movie I've seen with the Black Panther in it this year.
Not that Black Panther.

There's actually a reference to the guy in the Mexican cartel that they deal with.
He is known as the Black Panther.
The heavy.

And the funny part is the first time they say it, there is a distinct pause where everybody in the theater just goes,
can you just say that?

I was kind of asked, was that one film we saw last year about the gun fight?
I was going to ask that.
Does it, is it anything like?
It made my top 10 last year.

Words that Alison Brie when they're all meeting in the garage and all the guns.

Free Fire is wonderful.
Like, you say that's a lot of fun in the violinist.
It really is.
I mean, it's, there's not a lot of violence.
But there's enough.

The thing is, is it sneaks up on you.
Yeah.
On a baby driver level, maybe?
That's actually me.
It's a closer, but it's closer, but still not in that ballpark.
Okay.

This is more of the lines of they knew exactly when it was going to get violent and they saved it.
Just perfect.
Because the way it's marketed and, you know, when you look at the, when you look at the spots on TV about it,
those are the first two films that came to my mind.
We're Free Fire and Baby Driver.
Both great films.
And so I couldn't wait to get your reaction to see if it was anything like those.
From it, from it, as much as I liked at standpoint,
between the two, but closer to Free Fire than Baby Driver.
So be my kind of, that's why the vibe is kind of.
Oh, it's a lot of fun.
Yeah.
It's a lot of fun.
People are getting shot, you laugh, because it's so funny.
And there's a couple of moments where you go, oh, did not see that coming.
But it's, it's really, really neat in the, in the aspect of this film is puriscapism.
This is.
But it's not a guilty pleasure though.
I wouldn't say that.
And I also wouldn't say this is one of those movies for guys who like movies,
things either.
This is a really fun movie that anybody can go see of a certain age.
And I will, and I will say with the, with the violence that is in it that catches you off guard.
A lot of times in comedies where they'll have that action, it kind of dilutes the violence.
This does a perfect job of separating the funny from the, oh, what just happened.
Okay.
Well, I'm intrigued.
I mean, there's, I already wanted to see it.
Now, I want to see it even more.
Oh, no, I had high hopes going in, and they were easily exceeded.
Dang it.
Yeah.
So, no, but to also go along with that Charlotteshoe Copley.
Oh, he's so great.
Mini spoiler actually turns out to be related to another character.
And it plays fantastically.
Okay.
I might have to go back and watch the trailer to see if that really is a, a spoiler or not.
Because it's, you kind of see it coming.
Well, you see, you see it absolutely coming.
It's not a huge reveal, but it's like, oh, okay, that makes sense.
Why X knows why and everything.
And I was just fascinated by the dichotomy of his character.
Even though he's not, I don't think I'd consider him one of the main actors.
Because you have this gruffin tumble on one side and this, that's behind me.
The aspect that he really, you can see that something else I think you will dig.
And I don't think this is a spoiler.
Okay.
Over about half of the end credits, you get an instrumental Mariachi version of just like heaven.
Oh, good.
And it's really, really good.
It's fantastic.
Actually, you know what?
I'll go one step further.
Friend of the show, Doc would even enjoy it.
Yes, very much so.
Despite the Mariachi.
I can already hear it in my head and I like the way it's said.
Well, it's not Tejano, so he's okay.
It's the Tejano that drives him crazy, not the Mariachi version.
Well, why isn't, why isn't Coply getting more work?

He's choosing to.
I actually looked into it.
He's choosing not to because he has a production company in South Africa that he is splitting his time with.
Okay.
That makes sense.
I mean, because I can't think of it.
I think he's picking well.

I've seen him in since a hardcore Henry.
It was also a fun.
I would say a great film, but a fun film.

Have you seen hardcore Henry?

It's fun.

It's not, it's, I don't know that it's going to usher in a new era of style of film, but it's a lot of fun.

And this, this film is a lot of fun too from a different aspect.
And I don't know that I can classify it either.
It's, it's kind of its own entity.
And again, Oyello's chops are great.
He's his comedic timing is rock solid.
And the inherent joke of the fact that the titular gringo happens to be a Nigerian transplant from Chicago.
So of course, gringo.
And that plays in later too.
Yes, it does.
And there is a great payoff at the end.
There is one thing though that I did absolutely hate.
What's that?
I don't...
If it's a spoiler, hold on.
Yeah, it's, I'm trying to think of how to deliver it, but it is in the review.
But I don't clarify who...

The, the wink and nod to the camera.
I hate the wink and nod.
That didn't bother me so much.
It annoys me.
Don anything else you want to know before we get to the final analysis?
No, I just wonder if it's, you know, by that.
I think you, I think you would laugh out loud multiple times.
Oh, I think this would be Don's favorite.
This, I would bet.
And he's going to disagree with me just for the sake of it.

I bet this would be on his 10 favorites of the year.
I mean, I'm going to go, I'll go see it.
Oh, no, no, but I could see you putting it in 11 just in sight.

but I think that you would call me afterwards and go, dude, I really, really like this.

Because that's, that's a huge plot point.

Question number one is, what do we see this film again?
The answer is no, we're done here.
The answer is yes.
It's how far are we willing to go to see it?
Best of the best of the worst of the best here is the deal.
First one at the, first one at the theater, twilight, matinee, early morning, second one at the dollar theater,
actually leaving your house to go to Red Box, streaming on Netflix or cable.

I guarantee it.
How far are you willing to go?
As far as the theater goes, I would go back around twilight, but I will own this when it comes out.

I would pay full price for this in a heartbeat.
It's that much fun.

It hits all the right comedic notes.
And it hits all the right dramatic notes at the same time without taking itself too seriously.
I love this movie.
