I don't know, just kind of the way I roll.
But I'm not alone for this particular episode joining me across the desk.
Is a man that if it wasn't for haunted houses would never probably have met me.

That's an absolute undeniable, provable fact.
Also joining me across the desk is the official fact checker of this show and a man that will
neither confirm nor deny that there is a jack and lantern burning on his front porch right

You may know I'm as fond on go, but his mom and even don't want to call him Don Ford.

And you know what?

Whatever we do one of these it is always to review something and this is not an exception
to that rule.
We are here to review for you today.
The latest film from director Rob Letterman, guy who did a monster's versus aliens,
shark tail.
He has adapted the 90s book franchise Goosebumps for the big screen starring Jack Black,
Dylan Minnetz who's actually worked on another RL Stein property, Amy Ryan for the second
time in the week this is recorded, Jillian Bell who you might remember from East Bound
and down as well as work a hollocks, Ken Moreno has a small role in this as well.
Here's what you need to know.
Dylan Minnetz plays Zack.
Zack is a kid who's just just him and his mom growing up and they're moving to Madison
Delaware from New York City to start a new life.
Never been there.
I know her about where she has taken a job as the assistant principal at the high school.
As Dylan is moving in, he meets his neighbor Hannah played by Odae Rush and her eccentric
father played by Jack Black who basically tells him to stay away from them and let them
be.
Well as we know as kids do, that's not going to go real well so he and his new best friend
champ played by Ryan Lee.
Go try to figure out what's going on one night when they hear screaming from coming from
next door and one thing leads to your mother and a hoard of monsters is unleashed on the
town.
I think that's pretty much covers it.
Before we go any further, we got to think Ashton and everybody at Merock and everybody
at Sony Animation and Columbia Pictures for a minus to set up.
So great to us.
Oh yeah.
Such wonderful people they let us screen these movies and get the reviews to you.
Yeah thanks again guys thank you so much.
We're going to bury the lead a little bit for somebody in the room and I don't want
to mention his name but his initials are Chad Womig.
We're going to start with the story itself and I'm even going to start with Don.
This thing runs about an hour 43 in that area.
What did you think about the story?
Because this isn't a goose bumps story.
This is kind of a story that kind of unifies the whole thing which was trying to get
done in the late 90s but it never worked out.
At one point Tim Burton was attached as a producer so his George Romero.
Overall I like the plot of the film.
You know what your kid can kind of get.
This is not going to be a serious film that you expect.
It's a kid's house in the movie.
It's like a kid's scary movie which I'm better with scary movies with kids and I am
with horror movies for adults.
But overall I did like the plot.
It was some stuff predictable of course.
Most of it's else.
I understand.
I'm not saying that's a bad thing.
But actually the thing kept me interested.
I didn't think it really dragged too much at all.
I found the plot enjoyable.
I found it interesting.
I did not get too bored at all on this thing.

Number one is that is this film has some scary moments and everything?
Yes.
Which the kids don't think it's going to scare them too much.
We're going to give them like watch poltergeist and they're going to sleep with the light
on.
So I think I had that good mix where it makes the kids a little bit frightened but it won't
make them want to leave the room right now.
So I think that was very good.

I hope all the plot I was very enjoyable.

The story.
The story.
I thought it was a mess.
Really?
I really did.
When you have a library of books to choose from, that number in over 100.
I never knew what the actual number was.
When you decide to basically just throw everything you have on the screen in one shot.
When you're trying to, I would assume establish a franchise with it.
It didn't make a lot of sense.
But you've still got room to play with.
I think it was a good introduction to what goose bumps is.
And I think that's really where they were going.
This has been a thing since the 90s.
It's not as big of a thing now as it was then.
So I think trying to introduce a new generation to the goose bumps genre.
I think it was a good introduction because it kind of gives you a sense of what the franchise
is, how it works and what it does.
Now, am I the only one that noticed an homage to another one of Letterman's films with
the same star?
No, not at all.
I noticed it as well.
Okay.
Just making sure.
There's another film he directed with Jack Black that there is a, you have to assume it's
got to be.
It's got to be.
And Don asked us after the show did what you were talking about.
Okay.
I don't want to say what it is because I don't want anybody to do it.
Can you say was it in the house?
Yes.

Yeah.
Say nothing more.
I thought that was kind of neat.
I think that not being a guy who's read the books.
I think there's a lot of things that I may or may not have missed.
Like the end credits before the actual credit role.
I'm assuming that all, whatever they'd stop on something that that was the actual cover to one of the books.
I'd be willing to wait for that, probably.
But I'm sure that there's, I'm sure there's other little references in there.
Oh, I'm sure.
I mean, you missed because we are, the books were a generation behind us.
Yeah.
I was trying to appeal to a generation even after that.
Like I wrote in my written review on the club as podcast.com.
That's our website that, that I wish you for getting it.
That I felt, I felt kind of deprived because if I had been at the right age when these books were released, I'd have been all over it.
I mean, it was, it's right in my will.
But, but I also think that not having that knowledge, I don't think took away of the enjoyment of the film for me.
Because again, I'm not going to bury the lead on this.
I really enjoyed this film.
I thought it was a lot of fun.
Now, what are the plot issues do you have?
Oh, totally.
No, there was that yet.
We're talking about the story.
There's two plot holes for me.
That's, well, you really can't go into it.
One of them is the end of the film is a plot hole for me.
The other one is, when you see where he has to go at one point to right in a high school auditorium,
you see what the auditorium looks like and you go, probably not.
But, I mean, if I'm digging that deep to find stuff, again, I really enjoyed this film.
I thought it was a lot of fun.
I'm going to leave my brain at the door for an hour and 45 minutes and watch people run from monsters.
So what are the plot storyline besides, you know, what you talked about?
Well, then I have to get into what I'm sure Rob is going to refer to it.
I'm talking about the difference.
As the meat and the potatoes of it, I really can't talk.
Because we still have to talk about visual style and effects.
Which I thought were done very well here.
Oh, I agree.
I agree with you on that.
It was overkill for me.
How else was it done?
It's, again, and I think that was, it was the choice of script that they chose to go with.
They chose to throw everything on the screen in one shot.
And it was just, it was, it was an over a abundance, an overbloded use of CGI.
And I'm getting sick of that.
I'm sick and tired of CG being the answer for everything when you can't do anything practical in the camera.
When they could do things like this practically in the camera.
Certain things granted.
Like, and this is no spoilers because they're in all the trailers.
The praying mantis.
Okay.
There's no, you know, you're not going to be able to do that convince there enough.
Uh, but it was every time you turn around, it was another CG creature.
I'm like, I'm so sick.
That's why I hated Van Helsing.
See, it didn't bother me.
That's why I hated the mummy return.
I just too much.
I, I, I put in my room review at the clubhouse podcast.com.
That's our website that I really liked to look.
I thought that CGI was done well.
Um, the film mostly takes place at night.
And I thought with the lighting and everything.
And you just kind of had that feel of, this is how it reminded me of being this is how we night.
And the creatures come out, everything like that.
And so I thought, I had to get feel about it just from the look.
Yeah.
I mean, I had no issue with it.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Fun.
Yeah.
The CGI, I mean, how is she going to do?
Okay.
There's this is not spoiler.
The notes.
Okay.
They're into trailers.
How are you going to have all that then move around without doing CG?
I do not have to kind of trip to travel.
That, that scene.
I actually did kind of enjoy.
That was clever.
That was because they didn't, it didn't smack of CGI in that scene.
It actually looked like.
I had the effect.
You had the C2 moment.
Yeah.
Yeah.
That was one of them.
That was one of the scenes that actually worked for me.
But once they got to the school,
all better off.
And again, I didn't have any problems with it visually.
I just thought it was just fun.
And that's the kind of the way I took it.
And I took a friend of the show.
Ken Belcher is one of his daughter with us.
And she said she had a good time.
And she's in the seventh grade.
So this was obvious.
If it's in your will house and you're going to go now.
And I made my point on that.
After the film, she said that made her a little bit scared.
But she wasn't freaked out.
Right.
Which I think was done very well.
So that's all.
Take a deep breath.

If you've lever met Chad.
Maybe about socially.
Or maybe you've ever heard it referenced on the over 300 episodes.
Weekly that this show was done.
Plus the almost 150 of these that we've done.
You will know that there are two people walking God's greener.
That would not hurt Chad's feeling.
If they were abducted by aliens.
Three actually.
What's the third one?
Orangewalk.
Well, that's a different arena.
I'm just saying.
Where are we in the acting area?
We'll forever.
And he's never on being one.
And Jack Black being the other.
Hmm.
So first of all, sir.
Kudos to you for sitting through this movie.
Because I know you were not looking forward to it.
But as we say.
We like to take care of the people that take care of us.
And sometimes we've got to.
We've got to go to movies that we're not real sure about.
I mean, Jack Black to him is like my Michael cold to me.
Or my one chain at to me.
And for me.
I don't know.
For me.
It didn't seem like Jack Black was all Jack Black to him.
But for you.
It was.
Well, yeah, I mean, you, you roll your eyes.
But for again, this is my opinion.
I don't know.
I don't know.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I thought like he wasn't.
He wasn't.
It wasn't like an Adam Sandler kind of thing to me.
It was more serious.
He had to be not really a serious role.
But he had to be that eccentric kind of guy.
And we're not going to say who he is.
If you want to go look it up on your own.
You're more than welcome to you.
But for me.
This is the little demon.
Uh.
You're welcome, Internet.
But for me, I thought for what the role calls for.
I thought he was fine.
I'm not going to say, you know, Oscar voters cast your ballots now.
But for what it was, it was fine.
I want to add, um, we'll get to the other actors after, uh, Chad has his little, uh,
has his say.
He has his say on his little say.
It's his say.
Don't just count his opinion.
Oh, you understand.
But my, but with, with Jack back on this.
I did not, I thought his acting was good.
He, he did kind of a more different role than that.
Like you're saying to more eccentric and everything like that.
So overall overall, I liked it.
But by one pet pee of this whole movie, which is in your written review.
You have to tell me, don't the clubhouse podcast.com, which is our website.
Mm-hmm.
I put on their his fake accent.
He tried doing.
Okay, but when you say, let's clarify something because this is something.
I'm going to say something as a fake accent is almost redundant because if you're doing an accent,
obviously it's fake.
Okay.
So the accent that he carries in the middle.
Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no.
Natural.
There you go.
I like that much better.
A natural accent.
Mm-hmm.
He bombed it horribly.
It got more annoying as the longer the film went on in my opinion.
It didn't bother me.
It did me.
I know.
Because we talked about it at the screen.
It just got too annoying to me on that.
But beyond being, and that was my biggest gripe of the whole movie.
But beyond that, I thought he did good for the rest of the film.
As his character is a different style character.
I was, I was kind of impressed.
Not majorly impressed, but a little impress.
It was, it was serviceable.
Exactly.

Oh, god.
Oh, god.
Okay.
This is only like a 20 minute review.
With all this being said, he's totally miscast in this thing.
He himself, he himself, himself said.
He himself said that he was trying to come off as,
because I looked it up.
I did not homework on this because I didn't want to get blasted.
That he was trying to come off as commercially and dark.
And he did not.
Well, I can understand that, but there's only, and a film like this,
there's only so far you can go.
You know what I mean?
Because, and I put in my written review at the clubhouse podcast.com.
That's our website that he comes off as the loud,
borsely obnoxious scenery chore that he always does for me.
That's all he is for me.
He always has to be the loudest guy in the room.
And whatever scene he's in.
And he's devolved into one.
I'm really devolved because he's always been this way to me.
The way that Chris Tucker started to devolve in the rush hour series.
He figured as long as he's loud, he's funny.
Loud doesn't equal funny.
You still have to actually be a player in the cross on there.
But, but the, and I'm with you, Don, the accent.
What the heck was that?
The unnatural accent.
Because it was, it was worth it.
He's totally the accent.
It was called a fake accent.
It's like ATM machine or pin numbers.
And it was, it was as consistent as Keanu Reeves is accent and Dracula.
And Kevin Costner's in Robinhood.
It, it comes and goes.
You never know what he's, he was all over the map.
It's he, I guess it just didn't bother me that much.
That's just, it's just how he is.
He's a frenetic mess.
But I'm also not anti-jack black.
I enjoy most of this.
Oh, you're my butt.
I have to agree with him 100% on this.
You're more, I'm, I mean, I'm never surprised by Jack Black's performance.
It's, it's identical in everything I see him in.
It was, it was so hard for me to trudge through King Kong.
Peter Jackson's King Kong.
I'm like, oh great.
As soon as I heard that was announced, I'm like, well, at least they're casting him as an annoying guy.
Yeah, I want you to think on this.
Well, I get this is something else.
Who would do a better job?
And I was going to be my questions.
Okay, but when you think on that, let me, I want to go in and just think on that for a minute or two.
Because I asked you that last night.
They've even choices.
He may have, I guess he's up a minute.
Who played Zack?
I thought he was good.
Oh, he was very good.
It was like watching a young, chanting,
take them in a young, milakunus work together.
But the way he had that relationship with Hannah,
I thought it really showed the emotion and the feelings together.
And also he showed a great friendship, which, which jumped there.
I can't.
Well, they called himself jump.
They called him jump.
Okay.
The only one person called him jump.
But it was more than once in a film, too.
He's called more than once in a night.
So times he said my name is Jim.
But regardless, champ.
But I thought that chemistry between those three was very good.
I got to give it up to Manet.
He's my, you know, shining start when it comes to acting in this thing.
Not there, but all the kids were great.
Personally.
Well, the screenwriter and this doesn't exactly have a great track record.
I mean, this is the guy that crow wrote the screen place for
Shrek forever after, which was the worst of the series.
Yeah.
And Bryan Singer's Jack the Giant Slayer, which was in theaters for about 2.5 minutes.
Okay.
Answer.
Who would you put if you're the director?
Somebody older.
Somebody older than would closely resemble RL Stein physically.
Maybe a little bit.
I'm picturing somebody.
And third one.

I wasn't saying who he was actually playing.
I was saying if you want to go out there.
Well, I'm sorry.
But usually, I'm a one at like gives out the big oops.
But for once I've redeemed.
It's all over IMDB.
It's not like.
I mean, I didn't know that going in.
I literally didn't.
I did not know that going.
Well, when you were saying he was a curator, I'm like, he's proud to stay.
Yeah, it's it's.
I understand that done, but some of us don't go looking for those things before we see a movie is exactly
what I just said.
I moved on this one.
He'd go let it out.
Okay.
Then shoot me.
Maybe doing people a favor.
But it's he just doesn't.
Somebody more along the lines of.
Maybe even.
Not quite as old as somebody like McKellen.
But but somebody more along that problem that you're going to have if you cast that old.
Are you really going to believe him as his daughter?
Probably not.
There you go.
I'm just and you heard me say not somebody as old as McKellen.
But somebody a little bit more grounded.
That you could buy as.
I don't know.
For me, for me, he fit the tone of the film.
It's not meant to be that dark.
It's meant to be kind of goofy and kind of funny, which is the way.

I'm not saying you have to go dark.
It hurts.

I mean, somebody a little bit quirky.
Somebody that.
I mean, I'm almost afraid to say it.
But.
Dep.

I can see it.
But I don't think it would be.

Did you see somebody like Dip or or RTJ?
Do something like this.
Hmm.

Because to me with with Jack Blacks,
they're just way too much unconvineral chaos.
But he's just kind of.
There's enough of that going on without him adding to it.
Fair enough.
Anything else that we need to talk about for Xfile analysis?
Let's talk about this.
We did not see this in 3D.
Which is fine.
It is available 3D.
be worth the 3D you think of what it hands wouldn't that kind of come from the final analysis
I'm just saying I mean okay, but I'll just make sure this is covered for that's kind of just like it's available in 3D
Yeah, if you want to know if it's worth the 3D then we get that's what we get into the final analysis
And we talk about that. Yeah, we saw it in 2D and there's definitely moments in the film where you look and you go
Okay, that's gonna be there's a moment when there's a wolf man that
That you know in the 3D is he's gonna be right in your lap the increase to me
I think would be one of the coolest things. Yeah, that would look pretty cool
But my thing one thing I did when I'm put on there is I thought that this had a good flow when it came to
Being something that was adventurous
Funny, but there was some real heartfelt moments in it, too
What you know that kind of felt this is a kind of a cool moment
In probably know what I'm talking about when to say heartfelt and yeah, and I still feel like they probably should have gone deeper with that too

Somebody I liked it that was a good mix in the whole 3. Okay, shall we get to the final analysis? Let's go for it

Refer to as the empire is better than that. We're gonna ask two questions
Question number one is would you see this film again if the answer is no then we're done here
But if the answer is yes, then we're gonna go how far are you willing to go to see it
Would you see it for price evening? Would you wait for a
Twilight maybe a matinee? Would you go early morning on the weekend? Would you wait for it in second run at the dollar theater?
Would you venture away from your house to go to red box? Would you stream it on Netflix? Would you wait for it on TV?
Let's just go right out here and do a chat. Would you see this film again?
Oh, wait in here. That's one. Oh, what's he gonna say? I saw it three times before when it was called
Grimmlins or Ghostbusters or Dremonji? So no
Fair enough. What is odd? Would you see this film again? Actually, I would. I did enjoy it overall
I'm gonna say I would recommend it in see it as a matinee because I think this would be a good family film for
The teens are above when I see teens like 13 or above, you know 12 11 somewhere in that age
I think it'd be a good family film with they have kids that age now a six-year-old mat
Not really know what's going on. It might be too complicated or something like that
But like you're your guest last night. I think that age and older would be very good for this film
See it didn't start after noon and then go to dinner, you know, or something after that. So
Overall, I did like it. I was surprised. I would definitely go see this again.
Again, it's fun. I think it'd be good at a twilight show. You know right before you go maybe go do your
your cool Halloween-y type stuff
You know, maybe take the kids to the theater and costume go see it and then go do your Halloween stuff afterwards
For again for me, it was fun and that's really what I was expecting now. Let's really go into the is it worth the 3D?
Let's this or an analysis. I think the 3D would be fun. I don't know, but it's necessary, but you know
If you want to spend the extra cash, I'm not gonna stop. Yeah. I would say probably not myself, but you know
Of course we have to be fair and say we did not see this in 3D right you know, so and speaking of that
us seeing this again. We got to think Ashden from Morocco
And everybody had Columbia pictures for that and to see this thing. Thank you so much guys
