My name is Rob.
I am the executive producer of the clubhouse podcast and growing up I was smart, but I
was never smart enough to get into the gift program.
I was always just a little bit shy.
But I'm out alone for this episode, joining me across the desk as he does from time to time
as the official fact checker of this show and a man that knows how to give gifts.
He's the giver giving it his mother's off already.
You may know him as fun, don't go, but his mom and name him Don Ford, I'm going to
call him Don Ford.

I already have Chad's gay gift already, you're a gag gift, but I'm not saying that gag gift
for Christmas.
Yeah.
Okay.
Whatever we do one of these things, it is to review something.
This one is no exception.
We are here to review a movie today, or tonight, but anyone you're listening, I don't
know, maybe I do, maybe I'm watching you.
You don't know?
It is called Gifted.
For we start this whole thing, yes sir, I think Austin there band Slyfox, see me, see
me, see me, see me, see me.
Such fans of those guys.
We love so much.
We love so much.
We're letting us see movies really far in advance so that we can help you make the best
decision for your entertainment dollar.
So here's what you need to know.
You got to roll with me here a little bit on this down.
I'm here.
I saw it.
The state is for the empire.
Okay.
This was directed by Mark Webb.
Stay with me, okay.
So you have the guy that directed the amazing Spider-Man, directing Captain America,
Chris Evans, in a movie that's like a chick flick version of Logan.
It's really the only way we can go with this.
Plus true.
There are elements.
Yeah.
For those of you that need a little deciphering on that, here's how it works.
Chris Evans, again, Captain America himself and the only actor to do that, I can think
of off the bat to play two different Marvel superheroes.
Because remember, he was the original human torch.
Okay, I think he's the only one to ever do it.
So he plays Frank Adler.
Frank is a man who's just trying to keep the wheels on everything.
He repairs boats for a living and he's trying to raise his niece named Mary, played
by McKenna Grace, who's currently on a show I believe you watched on.
Are you not watching the designated survivor?
Yes, she is on that show.
Okay.
Well, what we find out is he's McKenna's about seven.
So McKenna's actually getting sent to school for the first time because he's been home
schooling here.
She is a math prodigy.
She's highly intelligent.
Even more intelligent than me, which is hard to believe in.
You know what?
That's a high bar.
So she's in public school with the public school wants to send her to a private school.
The Frank wanted her to grow up like a normal kid, he does because his sister, which
is not in the picture, we won't go into why you don't find that in the film.
Yeah.
She's taking after her mother in this talent, but Frank doesn't want, he wants a normal
life for her.
So he wants her in public school, he wants her to have normal because he saw what happens
with the sister being a prodigy and not, and what can come with that?
Yeah, yeah, I'm not getting the childhood thing.
Well, so the principal finds out about this.
The principal then decides that she's going to take it upon herself to try to force the
issue, which then involves his mother, played by Lindsey Duncan.
He also has a neighbor played by Octavia Spencer, so two Octavia Spencer movies having to
do with math.
We've seen in the last three months now.
It runs about an hour, 41, Jenny Slate, also in this, she former Cat Saturday on
live cast member.
I cannot say enough good things about this film, either.
This film, I can't say I had a low bar set for it, it had my curiosity peaked.
I'm going to have that medium bar, yeah.
This thing crushes it on every level.
Always great.
He's kind of now transitioned from the tiger beat boy model thing into a young man's
role that he fits into very, very well, playing a man who really, you know, he doesn't
have kids of his own.
He's raising his knees and, you know, he's making mistakes, but he's doing the best
he can.
He and McKenna Grace work very, very well together, and she is absolutely amazing.
Hit it out of the park.
Hit it out of the park.
I can't tell you the last time I saw a kid actor that works this hard and makes
she's 10 dude.
Think about the fact, she's three years older than this show.
Think about that for a minute, let that sink in.
What?
She seemed like a seasoned pro, absolutely, she absolutely crushes it in this.
She nails the emotion, she nails the character, everything, and it's just as much her
story as it is Frank's story and the balance between the two works so well for me, I don't
care that she's 10.
If this was released in December, I would be saying Oscar not for her.
You know what?
I'm not debating you.
There's going to be a word that come out of this for her.
If there's not.
If they released it at a different time of the year, we'd be talking Oscar not even
know she's 10.
Well, and it may get a re-release later in the year when this thing catches fire because
it's going to.
People are because it's well-written, yes, a really, really well-written script by Tom Flynn
that has a lot of great emotion in it.
There's a serious heart to this film that really, I guess because I'm not paying attention,
but it just hit me out of nowhere.
And you know why I have to give it to, believe it or not, I have to give it, you know,
she sees them and everything, but Duncan, Lindsey Duncan, but she pays his mother and
she gets involved because she wants the custody of, because she wants to send her to
the private schools and all that.
She wants her to follow in the family footsteps, which Frank is like, sorry, I was like,
I'm sorry.
The chemistry between Duncan and between Evans, yeah, I'm going, that's a mother son.
Are you kidding?
But they act like they're the father single part from a mother son in this thing.
But the, the brilliance of it, if you understand the dynamic, it works.
I know, brilliantly, and that's what I'm saying.
I mean, when I'm watching this, they did it so perfectly.
I'm saying compliment that they're a mother son, but they so far from it, that I have to give
it to both the Duncan and Evans, and there's some great laughs in this film.
Oh, yes, I got material a couple of times, I'm not afraid to admit that.
I got a question, sure, I want to get an acting, okay?
Okay, who is the agent you have for toothless in there?
Because how many films has he been in?
I'm telling you, Hunter is all over this, sir.
And he was in this film, even though, well, not only.
But I'm saying, I love the cat, the cat was Fred.
Fred, Fred, shout out to Fred.
Fred, we have to give a shout out to Fred.
I have to, I mean, Fred played the part.
Yeah.
And he has a very important role.
Yes, he does, but one thing about this, with this plot, which some of it's kind of,
you could see a little things coming here and there, and all that stuff, which is fine.
And it is rated PG-13, so be aware of it.
Yes, but I mean, it's still nothing that really, you know what,
for me, why it's like, oh, there should be nothing, nothing on this,
swearing, whatever, it would all fit, but here's the thing.
All I'm going to say is there's one thing that hit me for a left hook that you cannot believe.
Okay, and all I'm going to say is this, please do.
It's proof.
The proof.
That's on saying.
Yeah.
Okay.
I know what I'm saying.
Part of that is in the trailer, but it doesn't go deep enough.
But I like where you're sitting with.
Yes, yes, I know exactly what you know what you're talking about.
I'll tell you, the scene, the scene that got me.
Was it the hospital?
Oh, yeah.
Oh, yeah.
That, the way that scene is written and the payoff to it.
But because I sat there going, what are they doing?
Why are they here?
Wait, because there's no reveal as to why they, and there's a scene where
where Frank takes her to the hospital.
She's not sick or anything.
They just go to the hospital.
And there were five or six different scenarios going through my head and all of them were wrong.
You know, and the payoff to that, it just man, it hit me right where I live do.
Me too.
And that's what this film does on so many levels.
It's up.
It's down.
You run the entire emotional gambit with amazing performances.
A well written script.
It's shot gorgeously.
There's a scene where where Frank and Mary are discussing the existence of God.
And the entire thing is shot in silhouette under a sunset.
They live in Florida.
They live outside of Tampa.
I know the exactly area that they're in.
And it's shot so beautifully.
And the way she's asking about the existence of God.
And he's talking about, I have my opinions, but I don't want, I don't want them.
I don't want to give them to you because I want you to form your own opinions.
And they're standing there in the sun setting.
It just, it took my breath away.
It was so beautifully shot.
Yeah, I speak of that shooting.
One is that beach scene with the shells.
Yes, also very beautiful.
Yes, beautiful on that.
Yeah, the other one, it's kind of, he's talking about funny,
whether it kind of hit in the laughter and everything.
Was the, that one scene where the piano was done forever.
That's all I'm going to say, remember that?
Yes, yes, that kind of, that was some good comedy major laugh.
But it also hit, and it came right on the heels of a very emotional moment.
Yeah, I mean, there's just so much good things.
Why does that say again?
That one scene that we talked about the motion and everything.
When I got hit for the left hook on that, oh yeah.
I'm just like, I mean, I have the motions of laughing.
You're almost ready to cry.
But it's just like when I, that scene, I was like, oh, yeah,
very, very nice.
It takes a couple of very, very nice turns.
Incredible turns.
I mean, yes, you got the whole cabin on this.
I just, and I mean, that's the point where with with great, with the grace on this thing.
But can't a grace, yeah.
How she just, I mean, even that scene with the piano and with the stuff.
And the scene in the hospital, how she acted, she's, she's dead on.
You know what, she crushes it.
That's where she crushes it.
When he realized that we get the payoff in the hospital, how she reacts.
And Octavia acts.
You know, that's just, oh, I, I, yeah, really, really well done.
I, I, it's, and if this does not touch you emotionally, like you say, Rob, they're,
you're a communist.
Yeah, there's no time to be about it without a doubt.
Absolutely.
Anything else we want to say for, we put the, uh, final analysis on this?
All right, final analysis on this show.
The way we do it is we're not going to give you thumbs up thumbs down.
We're not going to give you, uh, five infinities or anything like that.
We call our audience the empire.
They want us to go deeper.
We're going to go deeper.
We're going to ask two questions.
Question number one is, would you see this film again if the answer's no, we're done here.
If the answer's yes, then we want to know
how far you're willing to go to see it.
Here's the gambit from best to worst.
Full price to the theater.
Twilight, Matt and A, early morning, second one at the dollar theater.
Red box netflix cable.
Dom, would you see this again?
Without a doubt.
How far you willing to go?
The coveted.
Oh, look at that.
Full price to the theater and you know what?
I'm not debating you.
And in my plus one faith, this was a perfect date film.
She loved it.
It's a great film.
Yeah.
It's a great film.
I don't know what's what you're what your status is walking into the theater.
It's it's one that's I would be willing to go see again, even by myself.
That's how good this is.
Yeah, I can't think of anything wrong or something.
I didn't like the pacing was well.
The amount of time it was well.
They'll do not drag the power 41 was perfect.
Absolutely.
Tell me something.
We don't, you don't like about it.
I can't totally can't without doubt.
