We don't know all of you by name and it would be really weird if I called you by your
name because then you'd wonder how do you know that and if I the only one download in
this thing we hope not.
But it is time when the clubhouse podcast for another iTunes exclusive.
We don't just do these because we feel like it will kind of do but there's usually a
purpose behind it.
Welcome.
I am Rob and the executive producer and I had the lunatic on this thing if you want to
call it that.
Joining me for this is the official fact checker of this show and he is a man who may
have some some opinions but he may not on this particular episode.
You may know him is fun, don't go but his mom and even don't bored I'm going to call him
Don Ford.
Welcome sir.
You know I am in a straight checker right now.
Yeah, I think you and I both are anytime we do one of these we're usually reviewing
something or doing something that normally doesn't fit into our normal show which is
every Sunday night at seven Eastern for Pacific where you can listen live on the
new stream we have a usually mark I've or just do it like you do it now.
Data for my tunes we're cool with that as well.
But Tuesday night March the 18th.
Is it the 8th?
Yeah, it's right because I went back a week ahead of myself or I'm like, Don and I had the
opportunity to screen a film called Enemy courtesy of our friends at Allied integrated
marketing.
Really had it.
I always have a great time with those cats man.
They're great.
And their office is like one exit down the freeway from mine which is very strange.
But we do love when they give us the opportunity to just screen films and we get to review
them for the empire.
So this one's going to be kind of difficult to do because you can't I don't want to
give away too much we value on this show of being spoiler free on some of these 30 years
old and if you haven't seen it by now you're probably not going to want to care anyway.
Basically what you need to know about this film first of all was directed by Dennis Villanue
Way, they who also directed the movie Prisoners, which I don't know that I could sit
through.
I did see that in it's kind of interesting he had Jake and Jake Jones Hall is in both
of these films.
Basically Jake Jones Hall does double duty in this thing.
I think very incredibly well we'll get to that in a minute.
We start by meeting a young man by the name of Adam Bell who is a college history professor
in the city of Toronto and leads a fairly sheltered life doesn't really go out of
lots.
You know same routine over no he has a girlfriend we think we're not sure what the true
nature of that relationship is because there's not a lot of love there as it appears.
Doesn't own a very empty apartment very boring life and a co-worker of his suggest
a movie for him to see and when he does he's watching and he watches the movie goes to
bed gets up the next day and goes wait a minute goes through the movie and finds a guy
in this movie it's called where there's a will there's a way and the kid playing the
Bellman looks just like him without a beard totally so this starts Adam on this quest and
the actor's name is Anthony Claire what happens for the next 90 minutes we really can't
talk about because if we start to talk about it it's really going to give too much of
the film away so we're going to have to speak in fairly abstract terms you'll be able
to see our written reviews as always at the clubhouse podcast.com which I hope is I really I
think I rewrote mine like two or three times just to keep it as spoiler free as I could and
so that the only thing I'll add is that he does meet up with him in a changes both their
lives.
Oh yeah that means you know it says we as you said earlier it stars the incredible actor
Jake Jumal who I think if we want to go through acting right now well let's let's let's
come with a big first I will tell you if you looked this up on IMDB you're going to see a
name that surprises you that places mother I'm not going to give that away because I didn't
know that going in I do want to start with the with the look of the film very very indie film
looking I was going to say that exactly a bit of a washed out look maybe like you're watching
the movie in the 70s that's in modern times um kind of a darker kind of screen said it's not
bright it's not very well very very pretty looking yeah pretty exactly but I think that's that's
what a villain the way they was going for he wanted you to understand that you know not everything
is always bright and beautiful there are spiders and I said that my written view they're spiders
understand that their spiders in this movie and spiders is something that I'm not a big fan of
I did not know that not a fan of spiders or snakes spiders are evil and they can hide
snakes can walk but they don't have legs and as Bill Ingval said that's evil that's in the Bible
I did never problem with the look of the film I thought the look of the film fit the story of the film very well
it is very minimalist um has a has a musical score that's very minimalist yeah very
at very no thrills no CGI yeah there's there's it's not very complicated as far as the the
shooting of the film goes it's very basic but that's also deliberate on the part of the director I think
yeah he wanted to story to tell itself he didn't want a lot of flashbang stuff in it
so if you're looking for that you're in the wrong place the the the look of the film
we've covered that so we can go to the acting in the film much like gravity the cast is not real deep
I mean if you look at the the IMDB listing the full cast is about I mean it's about 15 people wrong
but really you only need four more there's the main key cast is only about three when you really think about it
yeah there's four characters with three actors it's fair point that's fair point yeah
that's for you you're welcome internet uh Jill and Hall's a beast incredible the guy is an
absolute acting machine but what I loved about his performance in this film
I there was no point once the character was established there was not a point
where I didn't know who was who and you have to in this movie watch like you said before
we went in there you read some stuff where you said don't go to the bathroom don't
don't blink it's 90 minutes long and you will see that it starts kind of slow but then when they
realize but we don't realize what's going on with us two people and play by the same actor
you really start to get into and follow this thing of who is who because
James has such incredible job playing both people the first 10 minutes take setting everything up
after that we're off to the races um there were a couple of we were at a press only screaming there was a
couple of guys that were in there that just got up in the middle like and just went outside for me and I'm like
are you out of your mind when we're to get nachos yeah it was like really dude like and
like well yeah what if we're to get nachos it was like the one hour and 10 minute mark
like the movie six and the be over but I mean that's another thing for that but I just thought
the runtime was good I didn't do like it it was too long I didn't feel like they didn't tell
enough story um and I thought the two actresses in there did a marini Lorenz and Sarah good
don't yeah are the two ladies playing Mary and Helen um you think it's one of those films
that you think you know what's going on I thought I had it figured out by about halfway through
so did I but it's never expressly said this movie leaves so much to interpretation and how you see it
a lot like the counselor did but it does it better a lot better um but I thought like
Lily ran to the glorious bastards now you see me she's done something credible work before
I thought she did incredible job in this movie too it's there's a lot of symbols of in this film
a time there's this film is not designed to be dumb down this film is designed for you to watch it
and think about it truly um I didn't think there was a bad performance by anybody in the film I
thought everybody I mean there were times I think at times visually I got a little bit too
indie film for me where the where the sometimes I guess cut to black and then back and then back
to black that I could have done without but when you get to the climax of the film
I was completely engrossed in how is this going to work out and then it ended and there was a guy in front of us
I don't know if you saw this but it's a very end of the film um I actually heard him do a WTF
in the and in some screams to yeah you will never see the ending coming now okay who are you will not see the
ending coming and even after the ending comes you still go what had I just seen it yeah and
I'll say this 10 people watch this movie and it could be seen nine different ways from
10 people you and I had about a 20 minute conversation I was seeing this film about what you saw
versus what I saw because I tend to be more analytical where I kind of look I'm looking for the devil
in the details where you kind of you have more of a broad look to where I'm I'm I'm I'm
I'm microscoping it you know uh and it's good and like you said you get a 10 people watch it
and have nine different interpretations um I think I haven't figured out but that doesn't mean that's
what it is it's based on a book that you can get on Amazon right now uh by an author named Jose
Mungo but I think that's what makes the movie great is that so many people could watch it and see
it's so many different ways and but it's this movie is not going to be for everybody I think oh no I agree
with you eight if you're the kind of person that just wants to check your brain at the door for
an hour and a half don't see this movie because it won't make any sense to you to me the best way to
view this film is in a group of people and we've talked we've we've seen movies like this before
the counselor what the counselor was a prime example of oven that we did where we said go see
this movie with a group of people then go to dinner afterwards and talk about it I mean we've done
that two or three different uh films on this show this is one of those don't go by yourself
unless you're just you you just have to see it and there's nobody that will go with you take a group of
people um all adults yeah don't there are some kids at home yeah there are some very adult
themes that are dressed in this film um I don't even know how to classify because to me it's not a
psychological thriller it's to me it's a character study it truly is it's a thinking film yeah it's
a character study and who are we and why do we do what we do but do you know what makes it Jake he does
do it all sell the thing total show it all sells the thing and he makes it work this guy the
way he acts he could sell ice to ask him those I mean it's that simple he is brilliant in this
film and a lot different than the guy on October sky but he does it well well he I've always thought
he was a great actor I've always been a fan of his um but I think don't be looking for a character that
let's do it well this this this performance he knew he had to have two different people he I mean
his facial expressions and his mannerisms differed from character to character because Adam Bell was the
kind of reserved I just don't want to cause any trouble but this thing's kind of freaking me out
and I want to know more about it where has Anthony Claire is the I'm the big shot even though I've
been a bit actor in three films you know I've got the really nice apartment and he's got the empty
place and you could just see that without even seeing anything you go okay that's Anthony that's Adam
yeah you did just tell yeah you didn't have to be have your hand held through the thing and
there's foam booth you're just a foam booth getting used hello and they still have those in Toronto
apparently um I'm still trying to figure out the final analysis on this and it's been two days
but on this show if you've never checked out in before we don't give stars or numbers
we are our our empire's better than that they deserve a lot exactly no no letter grades is not
entertainment weekly although if they want to pay us to do the show I they're the greatest magazine in the
planet um the way we do this first of all would you see this film again and if the answer to that is
no well then we're done but if the answer is yes the question becomes how would you see it again
would you see it in first run would you wait for it in a matinee would you wait for it in second run
would you wait for it on blue-ray or DVD or red box or red box rental or would you stream it
through Netflix or would you wait for it on cable or would you wait for it on broadcast television
I will tell you that last option will not exist for this film no so down would you see this form again
yes okay all right so we've established you would see it again
we let's go to question one B how would you see it again something like
show time or HBO but for me personally but for here's it because it's so different this this this is not
gonna be for everyone correct I think the empire deserves more I would say if you want to thinking movie
matinee early early early early early screening early night to know twilight screening if you're a
person if you want a simple movie don't even go don't wait I feel like I kind of have to see it again
at some point I'm not in or I'm not really in a rush to see it again but I think it but see here's
my thing I don't think you get this on HBO I think you're gonna have if you're gonna wait for it on
cable you're gonna need to see it on IFC well there are something like show time I showed or
something like they might but I think it's probably gonna be a straight to IFC a channel of its
ilk yes because it's more of an indie film I think that villain the way they understand Jillan
Hall he understands is the way he acts and he shoots him very very well I think Jillan Hall
understands the way villain the way they direct and they have a great relationship there exactly that's
why why I went there personally for me I would think either wait for it on cable or I might rent it
and sit down with some of my friends who are more of that intellectual ilk just so I can kind of
I can absorb it again and I can kind of watch their reactions because this this is a discussion piece to
me I mean totally I might even be more tempted to rent it on blue ray just so I can pause it
every once in a while and go okay what are you guys seeing because the symbolism alone in the film
yeah at some point you feel like you're reading the grapes of wrath because one of one of my biggest
beef for the grapes of wrath is Steinbeck would tell the story and then he said a chapter talking
about a turtle crossing road and that's the way that book went um because they'll start to tell
the story and then there's this weird symbols in that happens and it's it will throw you into a
tail spin at certain points but you never get completely lost in it and what is it with Toronto
because one last time we did the Metallica through the never now is that a normal movie which was a
it's yeah iTunes exclusive it was it's shooting in Canada in general tends to be more budget friendly
but they did some weird stuff in Toronto yeah that's true that's a fair point
through the never was not a normal movie but we enjoyed it yeah it's it's French Canada so you have the
so there's that um but check this film out again if you want to movie that you could just leave
your brain at the door don't go disangnet no but if you want to movie that you can really honest
have have an interesting conversation with afterwards and really kind of dig into it and get your hands dirty
this is a good film for that and it is really limited at this time when this opens up
from this on Thursday the 20th it opens up only at the Texas Theatre in Dallas if you're
in a DFW air and that's the only theater in this state yeah it's kind of lucky to have
yeah and again thanks to our friends and ally to the great marketing we love them guys they do
stay there's so great to us and and we look forward to many many more of these with them totally
I'm hoping to one day get one of them on this thing why not have them sit in with us but I don't know
if they'd be allowed to you never know they'd have to wait I mean we've done some this is
six in a row for me yeah wow you think about it you're a role sir and we've got and we're gonna have
more iTunes exclusive yeah and we're probably gonna have a few more coming up you know it's
the season's picking back up again totally yep you know you got to think about the fact that
we're two weeks away from Captain America I believe in it that I will pay for that I don't care
I don't bother me then and then of course the big announcement we had I know that the Dallas
International Film Festival fires up April the third opening night yeah that's that's actually
starts April the fourth April the third for us yeah we're gonna be covering it probably not
wall to wall but we're gonna do everything we can to cover as much as we can because you know we have
day jobs too exactly but thanks to the ally didn't great marketing for helping us out getting this
in for the Dallas International Film Festival and hopefully within the next few days we're
