little time in the ocean every once in a while.

Because I'm a big fan of Galveston.

Whatever we do, one of these things, it is to review something.
This is no exception.
Today, or tonight, whatever you're listening, we are reviewing for you and we do it for
you, just for you.
Other people not just for you.
The new film from director Peter Berg, this is guy that directed movies like Loan Survivor.
He directed the 30 for 30 about, uh, wearing Grestie called Kings Ransom.
He directed Hancock.
He directed Friday night lights.
He directed the rundown.
He directed very bad things.
He directed the pilot for ballers.
It is called Deep Water Horizon.
And before we start this whole thing, yes, sir.
We have to think Austin.
Everybody at their Slyfox do it.
See, me, see, me, me, me, me, me.
See, me, me, me, me.
The end of the song came across the eye.
Fortunately, I was only when it was able to see this, but we all got the invite.
So we had to do it a little bit design and marker.
Exactly.
So here's what you need to know.
It is the trusser, we all remember April 2010 with the big BP oil spill out there
in the Gulf of Mexico.
And this is kind of the story of one of the crews that was on an oil
rig out there in the Gulf of Mexico when this whole thing happened. Yeah, it was on actually the deep water horizon
That's was the name of that was the name of that was the name of that really. Okay. It's good to know that came from. Yeah
We're talking Mark Wahlberg. We're talking Kurt Russell. We're talking James Duma. We're talking
Golden Globe winner
Gina Rodriguez. We're talking Malcolm Vitch. We're talking Ethan Supley
We're talking Kate Hudson. This is a big deal. Yeah people on this thing
Let's just let's just start with and this runs PG 13. Yeah, it's just under an hour 50
Yeah, good was time-wise. Was it right? Good and you should have been a longer should have been shorter?
I think actually a little bit longer than sugar. I'm gone real hours. Yeah. Okay. What how so? Okay, the plot
Basically I really liked what they did with the plot. It starts off where you get to know like Mark Mark's character
And I know you always do that thing about Paris Texas
For those of you that don't understand my I'm a Mark Wahlberg fan. I enjoy his work
But right now he and I are in a little bit of a tip because
Transformers age of extinction upset me greatly. Okay because you know a grew up in Paris Texas and I got a
Transformer and it's in a barn that was a little upsetting to me. There were a lot of things about that film
That was that yeah, we this was one of them. Yeah, that's the history but no
It shows that this is true story actually shows these people and it starts off actually
By the character the real life person at Wahlberg plays. Oh really talking about that basically being an
Interviewed like a deposition kind of thing about what happened. This is like the investigation thing
Now that's only a couple minutes and it shows him what does wife and kid and
You've seen a couple other people this is mostly Russell and Wahlberg in this film
These two they're the big two dogs in this film
It shows them which I really liked
You got a little bit of their background not too much, okay?
Then it shows them actually arriving in like the places in Louisiana where they
Where they go to arrive check in and then be phone out these platforms and it really show the process of that which I really liked
I mean they checked in what's your name? Okay, what's when you go into deep water?
Yeah, you're good to go because I prove that kind of thing and
Then you arrive and it kind of shows a life on these breaks that are
In the middle nowhere sometimes there's about 150 people in these breaks right and they're out there for extended periods
Yeah, they could be out there weeks at a time
Kind of shows the life of what's going on which I found kind of interesting. It's just kind of it
This is the normal day. This is the normal crew
Then it gets into the story where you got mouth of it just character
Who played Vendrine who's basically works for one of the companies who
Basically they're supposed to plug the well. They're a contract
They're a contract are not they're not part of the company
Yeah, and one thing I showed it which in the movie show which I really liked at the beginning
Mark Wahlberg said his home with his daughter and she kind of explains what the Pepsi can
What they showed you yeah, they show that in the trailer that is basically the original trick
It's kind of which is kind of cool. So you kind of see they get to the oil
They put cement in there plug it up and they wait for the people to come in and get the oil out
Right, so if you're not it's gonna shoot up like a you know
Yeah, guys are like you guys are a big time
Well, that company says oh, yeah, we did a good job then Russell Carr Russell's character comes in
He's one of those four men great her Russell by Jimmy Harold plays the kind of guy who's like
You know, I want this done right. I want to do the test
I want to make sure that you guys did this right because they were running behind in real life
They're about 43 days behind
But something like how many millions be behind budget on this
So that company kind of cut corners and then you kindly slowly see the bill where you just know what's gonna happen
They did it slowly slowly slowly then when it hits it hits
And everybody knows the story. Let's right from there. Yeah, yeah 11 people passed away
That's no that's that's fact that's you know no spoiler on that so you said you would have kind of rather it's
Be a little bit longer because I like how to show the pretense yet the other people show the life and it really showed what happened
I wish it would have showed a little bit more of the aftermath because at the end it gave updates like this was the biggest oil spill
And all that and that was kind of rushed through
I would like to see me a little bit more of the after effect
Okay, yeah, it showed what happened after with the survivors like wallberg
It got real emotional because you got these people in a hotel room and you got family members not knowing if they're sons alive
Right stuff like that and that really showed that what really happened and how did you see my son?
You know my you know my son my son said what happened did you find you see alive
It really which really did did very very well, but the after effect was really kind of rushed at the end
Okay, the explosion where the things that's on fire and when you know it all hits
Incredibly well okay incredibly well it flowed well
It made the main points except I thought they rushed the end a little bit right still
I got to warn the empire. It's brutal lot a lot of graphic. Yes got graphic scenes to picking the way things
But you kind of have to
Yes situation like and you understand when these things hit like when it the thing ruptures on the platform
You're wondering why why are there cages in like this glass and everything between the drill thing and the operating room and you understand why because it
It gets brutal and so you felt it was true to form. Oh, yes, they didn't you didn't feel they didn't totally
No punches a Peterburg a veteran director
Works on this film
Do you feel like he really did it justice? Yes, okay because it
The CGI and this was incredible it really felt like you were there
You know sometimes you know film CGI and you could uh CGI it out
This film you knew was CGI, but it didn't seem like it was CGI. Okay, so there's very very natural look
The fire's going around and all that
I really enjoyed how it looked when they're portraying this at night with so much fire explosions everything
It was really done well when it comes to the graphics
It really really showed what happened and what these people tried to do to survive
I mean some people

There was a great cast great chemistry. You know where you're gonna get with knock-a-bit
You know what you're gonna get knock-a-bit
Yeah, I mean knock-a-bit you're knock-a-bit. It's not what we have of course. I mean he's a legend
Some of these other characters, but I mean some of these other actors. You know you're gonna get with people like
Like curdle Russell yeah, but my shining star has to go to Russell
Curl Russell a very great actor one of my personal favorites. He played that part a role that you never really see that often with him
Of course, you know him can snake from escape from New York, you know from these other films
His Disney stuff in the 60s and so on and he's done all this stuff
But this was kind of a role you don't really expect for him. It was kind of new, but he played it well
He played that form and who's like he gets injured. That's all I'm gonna say
Yeah, and what he goes through to make sure that he's doing everything he can at least people could get off while
Basically he can't see in one eye as long as I'm gonna say okay. I mean he he got injured
But how he cared about was the real what the the well the drill
The platform what we could do to try to stop this in the crew. He just cared about the crew the crew
And any downside to it
I'm trying to think I mean I'm not saying I'm asking the questions. Yes once the know
The
The rushing at the end I thought okay, how they kind of cut it, but not bad, but if that's how digger you're going to dig
You're going to dig to find something bad. That's a good thing. I mean it wasn't really
We're on the soap box here. I know we've not we don't try to believe political and all that and we're talking we're talking oil spills
But this is what happened. This was a true event and it didn't really go
BP you're such a horrible thing. They didn't go in the soap box on this good they kind of show just what happened because it is true that
One what the contracted company cut the corners basically when it came down to it in real life
Okay, and it showed that
But it didn't say how dare they how brutals BP those ruthless people all that it didn't get real preachy
It said here's what happened here's these people here's how they live on the work
You start you get to know what life is like and all of a sudden it hits or pull no punches. This is our best way to show
What happened with these survivors and what they went through and what they were able to tell what happened?
Okay, so beyond that it
I just think
Beyond anything rush acting was fine look was beautiful direction was great flow well
Most of the film was just incredible. All right show we get to the final analysis then let's do it
All right, do we do the final analysis on this show if you joined us for the first time
Little bit different than you might be used to we're not gonna give you thumbs up thumbs down
We're not gonna give you
Letter grades numbers stars emojis nothing like that
What we like to do on our shows we're gonna do a little deeper because our audience whom we affectionately refer to as the Empire wants us to
I'm gonna ask Don up to two questions question number one is would he see this film again if the answer's no
Then we're done here, but if the answer's yes
We have a spectrum because I want to know how far he's willing to go to see it again from top to bottom
Best to worst the rankings are full price of the theater matinee
I'm sorry full price to the theater twilight matinee early morning second run at the dollar theater

Definite how far you willing to go? I was my bar was a little high okay, but I was surprised
How incredible this film was I only had that one small down side all right
I cannot really find anything wrong with this see the film. It's not political
I'm given it to covet it the full price that the theater wow. Yes, that good
That's a big rating from Don because he doesn't give those out just willy nilly yeah, yeah, I
Everybody who had talked to who saw this you look at riding tomatoes all the people that they will
That's grinning with the other fellow critics
They all like to too. Now let me ask you this this will by the time people can hear this they'll be able to see it
It is going to be available on iMacs. Would you pay the extra for iMacs?
I don't know well, I think with the special effects in the CGI and in really showing
Some of these explosion scenes and some of these were the the drill and the platforms just tearing apart
I think maybe it might be worth it. That's a main. Okay. That's a maybe. Yeah, everybody liked it. My plus one loved it
So, you know, it is deep water horizon directed by Peter Berg.
