Whatever we do one of these is usually to review something in this particular episode
and there's no difference.
We are here to review the newest film from a novel by Jillian Flynn.
You may know her name.
She is a lady that wrote a little book that made it to a film called Gone Girl.
But that's not what we're here to review.
We're here to review dark places, which was adopted for the screen and directed by
Giles Pack with Brenner.
Boy, I'm just sure there's no way I got even close on that.
But you would know him.
Basically, I'm going to call you V as really the only thing I recognize.
A lot of French stuff.
So it's probably Jillian's packer.
Brenner.
And then they parked it.
Was he the one guy we did at the death this year from France?
No.
Probably not.
You remember what you were talking about?
Yes.
Okay.
Basically, this is the story of Libby Day.
Played by the great Charlize Theron.
When she was a kid.
There was a brutal murder at her family's Royal Kansas Farmhouse.
Her family.
Her brother was accused.
It's now 25 years later.

Oh, I'm seeing 25 on the official thing here.
Okay.
All right.
But that's 28.
But that's why.
And maybe he's not so guilty.
You don't know.
And it's the journey that she has to go through to revisit this time in her life
to try to figure out the guilt or innocence of her brother.
Before we get in first off, we got to think our best friends for inviting us to this thing.

You know, I'm going to be kind of facilitating.
I do want to add to the plot a little bit.
Sure.
She was basically except for her brother.
She was a sole survivor.
Her two sisters were killed and her mother was killed.
And she got a lot of donations over time.
Did the book deal with all that.
But now the money is running out.
Oh, yeah.
And so there's a group of people who, you know, are like private investigators pass police officers and stuff who investigate murders where it may have been questionable or people are still on trial.
I'm not like one of those innocence projects.
Yeah.
Exactly.
And they kind of think that maybe her brother was innocent.
Because she's the only, she testified that she saw her brother do it in court as a child.
Okay.
So they asked her and they pay her to, that's the main reason she does it is to, because she needs the cash.
They offer her money to help them in this project.
Because the window of our opportunity is closing on him to file this final appeal.
And also the evidence is about to be destroyed.
Yeah.
Like in three weeks.
When they say like if they have evidence from a case that's more than 10 years old, they're going to just shred everything.
Oh, yeah.
So this is his last who raw and he's never really filed for an appeal because he doesn't think anyone would believe him regardless of what he did.
Now if I'm not mistaken Chad movies like this kind of up your alley.
Yes.
In your wheelhouse.
How did you feel about it from a storytelling standpoint?
Very convincingly.
You definitely get this, this feeling of cold and dread.
It's, it's, it's really easy to compare it to films like Gone Girl but it's also easy to compare it to something like
Silence of the Lambs.
I mean, it wasn't, I know that you kind of were under the impression that this was a horror film.
I'm just not into movies that are just like we're going to do things.
No.
No.
It was like that.
It was even like that.
It's a mystery.
It's basically, it's a murder mystery that slowly starts to unravel itself.
I know that she wasn't the first choice to play this role initially.
It was Amy Adams, but I think probably Batman v Superman might have gotten in the way.
I remember talking to people after the screening and they didn't think that Charlize was right for this role.
And she may have been, yeah.
I talked to a friend of our friends from the show because we met up afterwards.
As you guys are giving out of the screening and she said the same thing.
She may have been a little too old to play that role.
And I could definitely see Amy Adams in this role because she does seem a little bit more age appropriate to someone who went through this as a kid.
And now 23 years later, she's probably closer to the age that Libby would have been.
And she's also starring playing her brother is a man that she's also worked with fairly recently.
Yes.
Nicholas Holt, who plays Knuck's in Mad Max Fury Road.
So we're rather well together.
But still there.
She was still good picked.
Oh yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I'm not just discounting her performance in this at all because she carried this thing.
She had to do the weight of this.
Can we take a moment here and say.
The as we're recording this is on the release date of this film.
And on the release date of this film happy 40th birthday to Charlize Theron.
Really?
Yeah.
Today is her birthday.
The day we record this is the day it releases in the US.
That's outstanding.
Well, I'm sorry.
I didn't mean to interrupt that.
Yeah.
So she physically.
She's only five years older than what the role is of the five years old.
So I mean, it's not that big of a difference.
But done.
Did you feel the story was told well?
Oh, definitely.
I mean.

You know, there's been some great films in the past like seven far go.
The usual suspects where you get that good mystery and stuff.
And I think that this is starting to get in that good realm of those other films.
And it had that feel of gone girl.
Well, yeah.
That's what I'm saying.
If you like gone girl, I think that the pot you will get into this because there are some mysteries.
And on the innocence of the brother, when you find out the truth, you will never guess it.
You will never guess.
Is it kind of, it's one of those movies that I, I would, could you say in the vein of like primal fear?
My name is primal fear is nothing.
That's what's about your guilt.
But you're gearing at Norton where we're.
Yes.
You, you're not really sure whether he actually has the split personality.
You can say it's like that kind of like that.
But the thing is the, which really got me because you know that I love those films that take a turn that you never see coming.
I love being surprised in films.
Is there any foreshadowing at the beginning that kind of tips you off to what may happen?
Or not really because when you find out the truth, you never see coming.
And there was no real clues on it.
I thought of coming in.
I like how the film went back and forth.
It showed her in current day, then it goes back.
It really builds the story.
Really builds the story of of what really happened there.
It just doesn't go back when it goes back to when she's seven.
It's not just what happened that night.
It really builds up.
And the guy who paid who plays her younger brother, her brother and this.
And we're talking that the younger version.
I shared.
I shared.
He did so incredible in this.
I thought he did way better.
And his role as the younger brother is more important than her current brother.
I mean, the image that adult, you mean.
Yeah, as an adult.
Yeah.
And he don't see much of the adult.
I shared and you would know from the Matthew McConaughey film.
And also just free of life.
He's actually going to be playing Cyclops and X-Men apocalypse.
Really a lot of X-Men veterans in this.
Yeah.
Nicola's hold first playing Beast.
He's in this as well.
Lot quite.
There's a handful of those.
But playing the adult.
Ben Day.
I got that we've also seen recently in another film that we recently got to screen.
Guy by the name of Corey Stoll.
My computer's writing a little slow.
But he was in something very recent that we saw as well.
But I think the story of building up to what happened in that burger that night.
Because she'd do find out what really happened.
Corey Stoll was the villain in the end, man.
I'm sorry.
Oh my god.
That's yellow jacket.
Oh my god.
That blows my mind.
Yeah.
But the story back when they were young.
It's so critical and so well done.
That it complements the current time so well.
And one I have to give it out.
The Chloe Grace Mortez.
Moreitz.
Moreitz.
Yeah.
She as a younger as a young girl.
And her older character is not in a film very long.
But her play in the young.
How do you pronounce that?
DeAndre.
DeAndre.
She did incredible.
She was such a manipulative, ruthless person in this thing.
And she hit it out of the park in that role.
I thought.
So if you'd reach out or not.
Somebody that kind of surprised me just by being in the film was Drea de Matteo.
She's dating somebody in a band that got proposed to recently.
Oh, she did.
I'm a big fan of her and get her work.
He being been around this time before these murders took place.
Was being accused of all kinds of things.
I had to feel paradise lost.
They were trying to make that.
Okay.
I know you're a big fan of that series.
You saw it though.
I did.
I saw it every part of it.
It made a lot of references as if this was the case of the pair.
Kind of based as the West Memphis.
The other the Satanic ritual and all that stuff and all that.
Yeah.
Because when they're doing that stuff, I'm going, this is like Paradise Lost.
I came to mind why I'm watching the film.
Should I go ahead?
He kind of gets painted in a very negative light.
He almost is tried and convicted before anything bad even happens.
The whole town doesn't trust him.
Okay.
You know, you get it.
Remember, this is the mid 80s.
And the whole emo Goth explosion hadn't happened yet.
So unless you were rubbed.
I can see that character's based like Damian Nichols.
It's a paradise lost.
Right.
I got it.
Yeah.
He smelled what you're cooking.
But, you know, you remember that.
Remember the character that we got such a kick out of in Blair Witch 2.
But the game's a power.
You've been a thorn and a side of this town.
That's kind of the way they viewed this kid.
Okay.
You know, he died his hair black.
He was hanging out with just reputable types.
He did exactly have the best upbringing.
His dad was an absolute POS.
And it's all this guilt by association.
It was the crowd that he hung out with because he felt like an outcast everywhere he went.
There.
His sisters didn't really seem to trust him all that much.
Except for Libby.
Yeah.
And he and Libby had a really close bond.
His mother just didn't understand what he was going through and she couldn't make
Entertails of what he was doing or what he was hiding or what he was doing or what he
wasn't doing or what he was accused of doing.
But she was always there to back him up.
Regardless of what was being said about him.
And God bless Christina Hendrix in this film.
She went to the ocean deep with really her portrayal as a motherhand protecting her flock.
Oh yeah.
She would go to any links to protect her kids.
I mean any links to protect her.
Yes.
And I agree 100% on that statement.
I mean, she she was as raw as raw gets.
It was it was like seeing.
Seeing Charlize turn in her performance as an adult Libby and then seeing Christina Hendrix
protecting the young Libby and the rest of her of her siblings.
You could definitely tell where Libby got the fire and her belly from.
And if you haven't seen this film and you see the film then you listen what Chad says.
Any links really makes she will go through anything for these children.
It's it's chilling.
It was it was it was a gut wrenching film to to sit through heck of a cat.
It really is.
It's a rock I mean and Andrea Roth who you might remember from rescue me playing Tommy
Fox wife is in this as well.
She's the adult DeAndre.
Yeah.
She's very huge.
I'm a big fan of her as well.
But just like gone girl, you know,
Gone girl had that kind of weird ending.
You know, you're kind of like, what the.
It kind of, I thought the ending though was really kind of weird.
You know what I'm saying?
Can you see what I'm going with that Chad?
Well, but because there was no really.
Be careful.
Yeah, and that's what I'm saying.
I can say anything about the ending.
I'm just trying to say the Chad.
You think that ending was kind of.
No, not at all because that's how I felt at the end of Gone Girl.
Okay.
And it wasn't because of the film.
It was just that's the nature of the story.
Yeah.
Whereas this I felt like we had because Gone Girl.
It didn't feel like you had closure.
Yeah.
This kind of has closure.
Yeah.
There is a definite feeling of.
Yeah.
That we've, this is something that we've survived.
It's kind of like we're over the hump on this.
You know, it's.
But then the.
Well, you know, that's that's my kind of weird part.
But I'm going to.
I'm not going to say anything.
I don't want to spoil or on this at all.
I would appreciate you.
Because I may want to watch this.
Oh, you don't.
Yeah.
I've already burned through the book.
Okay.
Does that bring us are we ready for the final analysis in saying this?
Yes.

So you want to see it on the weekend.
Kind of.
Yeah.

It's it's worth it easily.
Very nice film.
Yeah.

And I would want to take my sister because she is red.
Every book that this author is.
Yeah.
If you like gone girl.
Yeah.
You kind of want to get her opinion.
I really do.

And also congratulations to direct TV studios.
It's being a part of this thing.
Is this one of their fledgling projects?
Yeah.
They've been at this for a while.
I don't remember more than a handful of films with their logo on it.
Because to get it's kind of a coup for them.
I mean, for to have something as big as Gone Girl do what it did critically and commercially.
And then for them to be able to snatch this property up.
Well, it's.
Here's the thing that surprises me about this film, though.
And, you know, I'm not Mr. Hollywood and producer and all that is.
It has that film of like Gone Girl and stuff like that.
But they didn't really promote it.
If I was a guy trying in the studio.
But that's could be budgetary.
Yeah.
I would still say, hey, from the author of this.
I wouldn't be pretty promoting it out because.
But again, there's a depends on how much budget they have to do.
Yeah.
They may not have the budget to do billboards.
They must have been interested in that.
But I would just wish that they could really get more promotion out.
Get the words.
That's why they rely on us.
Because it doesn't feel like an indie low budget production.
It feels like they spent a,
We do live in a world where Netflix will,
as bought the distribution and producing rights for the next Brad Pitt film.
But I think that the word of mouth of this will really.
And that's what we're here for.
Exactly.
