My name is Rob I am the executive producer of the clubhouse podcast and I do loves me some
CGI animation.
But I am not alone for this particular episode joining me across the desk as he tends
to do from time to time is the official fact checker of this show and a man that enjoys
some petite marshmallows in his cocoa.
You may know him as fun don go but his mom and even don't want to call him don't for
to welcome sir.
Not the petite ones.
I like the big ones.
Now see I have to have the smaller ones.
Chocolate on top of that too.
What's cream?
Put some whipped cream.
The whipped cream.
The little too much sugar from that point.
Whatever we do one of these it is to review something and this is no exception.
It is the holiday season and what would the holiday season be without an offering from
Disney Pixar and it's time to talk about cocoa for what's up to something.
Yes sir.
We got to think Susan Jenna and everybody is Susan Jacobs and Disney for the end of
such a fan such a fan of those guys they take care of us so well to give us the opportunity
to see films before they release so we can talk to the empire about them and help them
make their best decisions for their entertainment dollar.
Great people.
Great organization.
We love them.
Released.
If I read correctly let me double check but I'm pretty sure I got this right.
Released on the 20th anniversary of Toy Story.
Really?
If I'm not mistaken the release date on this by the time you hear it it will be available
to you.
Basically here's what you need to know.
Takes place right around and on Mexico's El de Andean Wednesday which is the day of
the dead shortly after Halloween where the Mexican people celebrate their ancestors and
they keep pictures of them up so that they can come back to visit them from the afterlife.
And we start off with a young man by the name of Miguel.
And Miguel he's a kid with a dream he's a little rebellious he's played by Anthony Gonzalez
and he is dealing with four generations of his family all in the same house.
His great-great-grandmother who is the daughter of a man who left his family to pursue music
and because of that music has been banned in the family because they don't want to break
up the family again.
And you have his grandmother who kind of keeps everything together played by René Victor.
Then you have his parents because as the generations have gone on they all work together making
shoes and then you get down to Miguel and his sister.
Well Miguel he really wants to be a musician.
He has somebody that he looks up to probably the greatest voice in his opinion in all of
Mexico or Nestodela Cruz and as the El de Marte begins its sunset he decides he's going
to go audition for a talent show in the downtown square against his family's wishes.
But in order for him to do that he has to borrow a guitar from De La Cruz's crypt.
And in doing so puts himself into the land of the dead with his ancestors and the only
way he can get back is to have their blessing but there comes a condition.
From that point forward we're talking about not only themes of family but we're themes
of just legacy and things of its ilk.
Also voiced in this film of course you have John Ratzenberger because he has been in every
Pixar film in the history of ever.
Cheech Marin makes an appearance Gabriel Eglaceus makes an appearance Edward James almost makes
an appearance.
Of course one of my favorites.
Who I'm a huge fan of.
But not a lot of huge names and a lot of huge parts which is one of the things I really
kind of dug about this also the great Guy Garcia Bernal who I'm also a big fan of.
This runs about an hour 50 because as we know times you are getting later and as times
are going on people are paying more attention so these things tend to run longer.
I was a little worried about the run time of this because that's a long time to have
kids in our 40 real quick toy story was November 22nd 1995.
So 22 years almost to the day.
But it really didn't seem like it was that it didn't seem like it like all the kids are
well behaved all the kids were focused there wasn't a lot of fidgeting around us which
is always a good sign for films like this.
So from that standpoint I was totally cool.
For me it was I thought it was paste real well you're you're a little bit different as

That's fair.
I kind of put because the plot kept me interested it did but I thought there was one point
where the big show is I'm going to say being spoiler free and the climax of the film.
Yes.
At that point a little bit before that it started to see okay they're kind of dragging
this a little that little bit didn't be needed they're extending this little thing here
not bad not bad.
Fair enough.
I just kind of felt that little okay I'm feeling a little drag a little thing maybe
about 5-10 minutes but not bad at all that's my one my biggest gripes of the whole thing
and that's that if that's one of the biggest gripes hey give it to but you know the plot
kept me interested now another thing at my review you know www dot the clubhouse podcast

I put the plot kind of worries me in an aspect because it does get complicated for
family features especially for the young.
Which is a trend that seems to be happening as time but more than usual this got a little
more complicated I see that but I didn't see it as much I put on there on the counter point
that there's some interest where I saw something where it was like even though the pot might
get complicated in a 5 year old be going huh you made the point kids were interested in
watching it because of the visuals the characters there's some great animals in this
afterlife because everyone has a spirit animal yes like the dog and how the dog changes
and all that stuff and all these other minor spoiler on us but just you know the dog
is not giving much way but I mean I'm not giving much to the pot away but all I'm saying
is that these beautiful animations of these animals and all that kept the kids interested
though even though the pot might be too complicated for them which I got to give to Disney
for hmm that's what they do yes so making it think good for adults for might be too complicated
where kids are still hey I'm watching this thing this is cool I like to look at this this
is kind of a fun they're still invested yes exactly now my biggest thing ate the
barrier here but visually beautiful after you're studying visuals it's what Pixar does and
Pixar beautiful beautiful doesn't slack at all here there's a lot of bright colors as as
used in a lot in some areas during this time especially at the end because you're doing
with the afterlife so there's a lot of dark colors involved too but during the actual
celebration when the party is happening there are some beautiful bright colors as well
and I think there's a contrast there that I think works really well well when I for when
I first kind of was born away was at night on that day of the dead when they go to the
cemetery how it was lit up by all those little lights it made a cool looking mood but then
you get to the afterlife in that world there starting with the bridge within everything
after I was like whoa and it kept it going oh absolutely they spend a ton on animation on
this film you can tell they spend a lot of time a lot of money but I think there's a great
payoff on this I mean almost visually stunning like book of life it had that great feel like
book of life and I was saying you know what do I think it could really make this better I just
wish Jorge was the one who directed for the show or who tears I wish you and I knew a lot of
people would are going to make comparisons between those two films and I actually put this in my
review at www.theclubhousepodcast.com believe it or not that's our website but really visually they're
not the same the fact that they deal with the afterlife to me that's where the parallels end
yeah good a lot of people are going to see this they're going to think it's kind of the same film
and it's really really not oh not but both visually stunning and I like how they show it and I
can see the differences in the animation in the animation style but still I had that mix they both
had that Mexican feel both deal with the afterlife yada yada but you know storylines totally different
between the two that kind of thing which but it's still I was thinking I think Jorge would have
been a great pick to do the director on this thing don't be wrong they did a good job that's
one thing I probably would have changed because I go this would be in his nutshell this film co-directed
by Adrian Molina and Lee Uncrich and Uncrich actually co-wrote the script as well
did he okay um you know what I don't know that I think it would have been fine either way
yeah don't go wrong and I'm about to blow your mind by the way okay you talked about the budget
yeah 20 million that's it according to Wikipedia that's your budget can I remember the
technologies come so far that you can do more cheaper now but you know and they'll have to pay
him that much for for actors too on hey you'd be surprised I'm like always actors make really
you'd be very surprised to have been on on screen and all that still not going to compare the two
because they're it's still acting and they're still union rules and things like that understand
but Molina this is his first directorial right but look at the other names in this I know I know
I'm saying hey this is his first shot at directing he did good did a great job yeah I think it
looked gorgeous it was a great story very rich a lot of layers to this story and it really delivers
its message very very strongly without getting crazy you know the boys agree they're in the other
room agreeing with me but I mean there really isn't much that I found as a detriment to this film I
think this is a great film I think it's a great holiday film especially you know with the kids
being off school of course you know it's Disney so they know when to when to place their movies
and I think this one is placed perfectly as we ask you to please silence yourself phones before
the show there's nothing I found I mean you said it weighed down a little bit I didn't feel that
way just a tad not much maybe about five minutes but on the acting you could say the voice I put
in the review that you know that I think they had a good selection for the people for their
parts for the characters yeah absolutely the cast was great yeah uh because the voice tones
and you know they didn't get they just say like Kevin Costner to play Robin Hood on the
voicing you get the point yeah yeah remember not a lot of this is accent orc either a lot of
these people that is their natural speaking voice yeah and I think that's why it was good in casting
that's why they did it that way yeah so I was a good job in casting good job on voice nothing
seemed too axonity where it was a fake accent that kind of hurt me I thought the voicing was great
through the whole film you know I'm saying I know what you're saying but you're just you're you're
off the rails with it it's yeah these people in their normal voices so there was a couple like
Benjamin Brad played it up a little bit because he's you know he's you we all know who he is but
most of these actors this is is the is the voice that they use yeah so I thought everything fit
really well it's a great film uh again this is going to be an interesting year come award season
because there's so much great stuff out there that I'm going to look forward to see you know
Disney Pixar tends to be especially when it comes to best animated they're always up in there
so we're going to see how this measures up against other films that they've even done this year
because remember this was also cars three this year too yeah so I'm going to be really
usually I was like cars three better though it's apples and oranges yeah but I if I think of the edge
but question watch cage 35 minutes so I was up there yeah yeah I mean it's paste well I enjoyed
what what would you have changed I don't know there's anything I would have changed there were a
couple of points that I was kind of like I'm not sure where this is going but in the long run I
got it it's one of those hindsight being 2020 you do a lot of that at the end of this film oh now
that's where that happened because there was a couple of things that was like that's kind of a
non-sec order but then it wraps itself back around on itself so I was fine all right uh 3d
I enjoyed the 3d but I don't know that I would make it mandatory because there's not enough
in this that made me go oh that was 3d I really like it the beginning with those flags and
everything I thought I added it and then we'll get to that in the final review that's okay right
but are we ready for the final let's go for let's get to it the way we do the final analysis
on the show we're not going to give you thumbs up thumbs down we're not going to give you letter
grades numbers of hacy endas anything like that guitars guitars we're gonna ask up the two
questions question number one is will we see this film again at the answers no we're done here
if the answers yes then the follow up question is how far are you going to go to see it again
because that tells you how much you enjoyed it so from the best of the best of the worst of the best
here's the spectrum full price at the theater and we'll even throw 3d in there because it will be
available in 3d also we go down from there to twilight down to matinee down to early morning
on the weekend down to second one at the dollar theater down to leaving your house and getting
it from red box down to streaming it on Netflix or down to cable don't would you see this again
definite how far you going to go I'm going to give this believe it or not 3d showing
okay in the theaters okay as a twilight or matinee it's worth that extra couple bucks during the day
that's why I won't do full price 3d but I would say you know you get that little bit of a
discount during the day I thought it'd be worth a 3d cost during the day or at the twilight
price for me I would see it again the 3d not really necessary for me I would go matinee
just because I don't know that a full an evening show I just feel like it fits a matinee better
and I think what the 3d 3d matinee 3d twilight that I think that'd be good still great yeah still
get you wrong and just like you know Charlotte came with me this is her birthday week when we're
recording this and at the end of the film she she's summed it up for me when she just said
Pixar and all the fields that's what it is it's every emotional beat and it hits it well
it is co-directed by Adrienne Molina and Lee Unkrich and it is Coco from Pixar
