And whenever we do an iTunes exclusive, usually it's to review something and this is
no exception as tonight we are reviewing the brand new film in theaters from director
Link Richard Linklatter.
He was actually the guy that influenced Kevin Smith to become a filmmaker with his film
slacker in the early 90s.
This time around we're reviewing a movie that's called Boyhood.
And when we say it's a movie 13 years in the making we mean it's a movie 13 years in
the making.
Backcheck actually 12 as per our good friends our best fairs close enough.
Speaking of our best friends allied integrated marketing letting us see this movie before
the general public so that we can review it we want to thank them so much thank you ally
thank you so much.
And yeah there were two separate screenings mine was much earlier than the ones you
guys went to but I made sure I retained my knowledge as I tend to do.
It is the story of Mason played by Ella Coltrane and when I say this his story it is
literally his story.
Linklatter started filming this with him when Coltrane was five and stopped filming
it with him when he got to college.
So it's the same kid all the way through so when we're saying it's a movie 12 years
in the making it took 12 years because he wanted to film this kid's development all
the way through.
Playing his sister Samantha is Linklatter's daughter Laura Lye playing their mother is
Patricia Arquette and playing their estranged father Ethan Hawke.
Yes Ethan Hawke is still around.
What more do you need to say about this film then it's his story it is Mason's story.
We do want to say up front this is not a short film it is two hours and 50 minutes long
so be prepared for that if you're like me and you have the bladder of an oil drum you
can take the large soda.
I would not suggest it if you do not because this will be a kidney floater for you.
Let's start with Linklatter this is a very daring project to take on because you're
committing the dozen years to this.
And lots of actors you know trying to mingle the schedules and yeah absolutely and just
lots of actors if nothing you're talking Linklatter I've always been impressed by him
I mean days to confuse that's all you have to say.
Because he has the criteria of the treatment of it yeah you know they say he wrote the film
But to say he wrote the film no is to say that I can speak five languages.
I probably could but it's shaky at best because really a lot of this film was improvised
They worked from a from an outline more than anything else which was important because
He also needed to be able to have that freedom with his actors
And you really never felt in seeing this film that it was scripted
But you didn't feel that it was improvised either you felt there was a structure to it
But you never felt like they're reading from QCard.
Thought I'm gonna ask you a European you know that.
Well first off to the Empire kind of maybe going like when you mean 12 years well
When you watch the movie it starts off with
Mason Mason as a little boy
And you see him
In the garden age can the garden age and he's sitting he's laying on the ground waiting for his mom to pick him up
And it's him going to the to eat these for college
It's literally the same kid through the whole movie
It's not a different actor each each different like a year
It's the same kid for him and his sister

I mean that's the incredible part the actors never change but you see them age so much through this movie
You see how Patricia our kid at all man did she change over the years and I want to I want to put a pin in that because I want to talk about her specifically
And we can all but did so you you're saying it. Is this a scent? No, it's the same children growing up
Basically you're watching grow up in two and a half hours Andrew your thoughts. Oh, I thought it was amazing
Just to kind of I don't mention not only are you watching the boy grow up, but you're seeing his sister as well and how she changes and just how both of them react to
the same situation that they're in
We'll see I tried to know going into this. I tried to know it was little as I possibly could
Yeah, so realizing that cultureing was the same all the way through for me was kind of like that's really cool
And knowing that it was the entire this this it was the same cast of characters with you know other people coming and going because
There are men that their mother meets and then there's the dynamic of them dealing with their father
All right
Played brilliantly by the way by Ethan Hawk Ethan Hawk for me is one of those guys where
There's whenever when somebody says Ethan Hawk I go back to reality bites that's that's always my first thought
But you know he's done some great work, but training day. He's really yeah training, but he's really
He's honored. He's not
You know what I mean and this film he was on like you honestly could believe that
He was the father of these children that the chemistry there I thought was great
But the fact that you were able to tell this story
In in three hours. Let's not get it twisted, but I think that the story was told well because it's not a linear story
It's not meant to be a linear story. It's meant to just kind of be like
Almost borderline voyeuristic that you're literally watching these people's lives and how they develop and to see them
Grow and change and mature. I just thought it's just again. Gutsy move
Gutsy gutsy move by link letter, but I but I think it paid off. I think it paid off well
You felt like you're part of the family
In this it showed how much he loved this movie that he had this much patience
For it. Absolutely. You had to have so much 12 years in Hollywood is like
It's an eon. It's an eon. To us
I always wonder though and as always I was doing more research on the film. I found myself going
How did he pitch this to cold trains mom? Okay, so here's what we're gonna do
This movie's gonna take 12 years to make. It's all about your kid
I mean, how how do you pitch that to a kid's mom that I'm gonna dominate this kid's entire
educational career for one movie? Well, if his mom is anything kind of like how he is or how Patricia
I can't play her I can see that happening because very artsy not
How he pitch ediates definitely deviates from the norm how we pitch it he goes. I'm doing the same thing with my daughter
Just to let you know okay, so just if this is not gonna be exploiting your child because my daughter is gonna be his sister
in a film so just you know that's I think that's how he's able to do it. Yeah, I think on something like that effect
But I just was so overwhelmed at how you felt your part of the family. Let's get into some of the
performances and I want to get back to something done was mentioning earlier
Admittedly not a big Patricia arcette fan. I kind of feel like she's got the emotional range of my cell phone
Um, my wife loved that she was on that show media my wife loved that show. She's coming up in an a new CSI show called CSI Cyber this fall
In this film
I was like thank you for not giving me Patricia arcette
You know she she showed acting in this film and I and I think a lot of it was because you spend so much time around people that you get that rapport
Which is not to take away from her skills, but what I'm saying is you spend so much time with somebody that you get that
Reported you really got the feeling that they were family and
I felt that she did an amazing job in this film and should not be overlooked when there's some maybe some awards that can be handed out for
Andrew will go to you on this one. Uh, I kind of agree with you on Patricia arcette. She
She has that like in Bethany, most show range kind of like that making boon character on the blacklist like
You know, she's happy and sad in her face and like never moves right, you know, it's like boat toxin. My wife likes that show too. Yeah, it's pretty good. Well
Never but yeah
The
That's a bunch of right that's all but our kit
You kind of felt like she was in your way your mother
Because you see how she is as a mother to this child and how she goes through so many different stages
As a child of a single mother there were things that I related to it because of the struggles that she has as a single mother of two children
Or has I was only one, but you can see the struggles that a single parent goes through male or female
But it shows how it this really is gonna hit a home for a lot of people because you're gonna feel like this is
Me, you know my kid growing up or I can relate to this there were so many things with the step parents because I've been through
The divorces and stuff
And all that stuff and me my sister with my mom growing up you
This will really hit home for a lot of people in the storyline the storyline
It made you feel like you were it's gonna hit just about everybody it watches this movie some way personally
And it really hit home for me because it showed how the family's change over time
How hot has changed over time he gets remarried and then his new wife and how his life changes and he turns into a different person
Any stand out performances for either of you
Besides the big three of our cat in in the two kids link letter and and
Elder Coltrane Coltrane. I mean the the one who played his first step dad
Marco Perrell
I thought he was very very stand out just looked at his resume
He's done. He did a lot of Walker Texas Ranger play the character named Coltrane
So he played how the this in the thing is you notice on both step tads
They start off kind of cool, but then they kind of get this dark sign. You know is is a portrayal should just just
Set herself up for this kind of thing is it you're you're saying for more of a is it a
Like a vicious cycle
Possibly yeah in a way and do any any stand-up performances for you
Oh, it's kind of
Ethan Hawks character the the dad again and again a performance by Ethan Hawks that you don't
Nessus serily seed coming right because he's so hit or mess with a lot of things and it shows from the very beginning how the kids really want to him to be around and he really didn't know anything about them
And then it was just hey who likes presence
And then you know by the time they're both graduating
They know pretty much everything about their lives
He shows them talking over the phone, you know at at or be a FaceTime, you know
It's technology comes in to play even if they don't know each other. They've become much more close
On this movie, you know, we at the screen last night
We had the joy of Brad Hawkins being there who plays the second step dad
And they did Q and A with him after the film and we got so much informed the stuff on this because
He basically did three different times where they had to film this over
Three different periods and you're like saying, well, I got this idea. Would you mind doing it?
And you go, yeah, I'll let you all get back to you within six months and then then
But then he gets a little thing saying they ain't three months guess what we're gonna start filming
I need you here at this time and this is when you're gonna do and then we found out that there really was no script like you said earlier
It is basically the day before what they're gonna shoot their doing the director in like Hawkins we get together and say
Let's do this kind of impromptu. What would your actor as an actor? What would you want to do in this situation?
What would you want to do that situation and they spent most of the time impromptuing everything and then by the time
They got figured out what they wanted to do. There was a very simple script because they knew what they're gonna be saying
And then in the shooting the next day
He said there was no
Basically really really rare retakes or something like that because it was already kind of already done a multiple times before they even filmed it
And that's just the way the production went
Yeah, and that's that's kind of me a bit of the genius. I was gonna say when when you say a link later wrote it
Did I think it's just more he did the outline
But plan he knows he knew where he wanted it to go but just how it got there was just kind of cool with whatever
Anything else before we get to final analysis gentlemen? I he said our cat
Brad said this that our cat. I got a lot of respect for on this because she was all over the place on this thing and she had to spend a lot of
Time or career same with hawk
And then main characters who's how much time and scheduling and you gotta give it to the director of trying to get all these actors together
So many different times so many times apart
It must be
Agent's nightmare
You know
Yeah, travel schedule alone had to be just a nightmare
Oh, yeah, and try not a lot of it was just them
Just kind of hey when can you do this?
Yeah, and just just kind of just lying into that especially for Patricia our kid to work with that many different actor actresses
Yeah, I mean that's I don't know if they ever spent time, you know to get to know each other
Like the work well last night he wish he could have more time with her but she was so big
Part of this that doing so many different things with so many different people she was all over the place
Yeah, you know
All right gentlemen, let's get to the final analysis when we do the final analysis on this show especially if you've never joined us before

We don't give stars or grades or numbers because you're better than that
And we're not gonna insult your intelligence
The way we do it is simple. There's a two-prong question question number one is would you see this again?
The answer is no then we're done here
If the answer is yes, then it becomes how would you see this film again? Would you would you pay a full price?
Would you see that a twilight show in the five o'clock hour?
Would you see that as a matinee?
Would you see it as a before noon showing would you wait for it in second run?
Would you run it on DVD or would you wait for it on table now? This is an IFC film so we think we know where that's gonna wind up
Don't we start with you. Would you see this film again? Definitely okay, even though it was usually those felt I
I would
Because I like to just kind of sink it all in again
I would honestly be willing to do the full
Full theater at night on this. Okay, so full price. Yeah, and I would easily recommend it the same way and you know
I think honestly there to say in this last night that there there is a major Oscar buzz on this thing as
Why would you in there was so much national tension given to this movie because
Because of the style and in fact rolling stones that it was probably the best movie of the year so far
So I think there's a major Oscar. Wow that this is something you will not expect this is something totally new
When it comes to Hollywood with the patience I can't recommend it enough
Andrew would you see this film again? Yes, I would see this film again. How would you see this film again?
via the IFC channel on cable any specific reason why?
Well, it's too long there there's a lot of parts where you know it's
There's not enough there's too much down and just kind of coasting along and there's a lot of storytelling and
It was just too long for me. I need those comedic spots over in the last third of that movie
I needed that a little bit sooner to keep me interested and if there's one criticism of the film
It's the pacing is is not steady no and I understand that going into it too
There's gonna be times where it jumps really far forward and there's gonna be times where it jumps
It's very small jumps so be prepared for that as well
And if I've got to have a criticism of the film is that the pacing is just all over the place
But it never goes backwards right it never goes backwards
I would say that
the main character
is as a kid he's more open but him growing up he's more seclusive you don't get into his life as much
So I think there's not as much really trying to get into him and really what's going on
Into the film compared to the beginning because he's more of a you know different kind of person
Then he has his a child and and even Brad said this he goes those kids
You know link letters daughter and and Elton is that they are almost the same people
You see on the screen really yeah, and that's just the way they are
Yeah, I guess I would disagree with you because I think for me the longer the story went the less you had to tell
That you could just see it like you could see you could see what was going on on his on both of their faces
You knew it was like link letter didn't want to insult his audience
He's like look the performances are going to speak volumes for you
You can take what you need just from the performances themselves. I don't have to tell you and in my opinion
And of course, yeah my opinion. He's absolutely right
I got everything exactly
I just think it was more open at the beginning and he gets more kind of close because he is a quiet kid in the film
He's more seclused
It really you mean getting in to try having trouble in getting into relationships with girls, you know
And that's just kind of goes into the movie so kind of I think kind of slows a little bit more by the end
But some good comedy but the scene with his mother at the end and you know
I'm talking about that was a hit hole. That's one of those that we've all been through and you understand it
What's been true shark hit everybody will know for me. I would see this film again. I very much enjoyed it

Don't know that I would watch it again in the theater just because of the length of it
I'm I maybe it's just that I'm at that age and I get a little antsy
But I would love to watch this at home
So that if I needed to get up and stretch around and go to the bathroom I could just pause it or stop it
I would I would go
DVD or IFC
I think I'd be good either way. I think I'd be more leaning towards blue right just because IFC doesn't broadcast in high definition
Not that you need to watch this in high definition. I'm just an HD snob
And that's just a story of that
You know, but how would you recommend it to the Empire if you were to see it the first time
I would go to a Twilight showings
So you could go to dinner afterwards
And not that I wouldn't pay for price, but I think I
Dealy to see it at a at a Twilight because you're gonna want to talk about it afterwards
Maybe go have dinner somewhere and talk about what you saw
We we see a lot of films that we consider
Conversation pieces and this is one of but the counselor and so yeah better than the counselor
