Welcome. My name is Rob. I'm the executive producer of the clubhouse podcast and it's hard for me to read books anymore.
I'll read like 20 pages and then put it down for like six months and then pick it up and read like 300 pages. It's very strange. I don't understand it, but it is what it is.
I'm not alone for this particular episode. Joining me in the co-host chair as he tends to do is my co-host and a man that when it comes to reading movies based on books,
he took my advice earlier this year and he's a better man for it. He is Chad. Welcome, sir.
And I appreciate that advice. Yeah. Did you got, have you gone back and ready yet? No, I'm, I'm, I'm waiting to get a better copy of it because I've got it on digital and it flubs up on me.
Oh really? Yeah. I mean, I want a physical copy of it.
Next to him is the official fact checker of this show and a man who's proud to say he finally finished reading, reading Genesis.
He started when he was 14. You may know him is fond on go, but his mom and I'm done for him. I'm going to calm down for it. Only 65 or to go Don, so you're good.
Hey, hey, I just finished another book and intriguing hard read called see spot run 20 pages of some of the toughest reading I've ever had.
I have never been more proud of you than I am right now.
Running out today says a lady of the house and somebody who probably reads more than the three of us combined.
She is general welcome friend. Evening and yeah, I'm more than a hundred books into the year. Yeah, not I said the fly. Wow, really?
Is this one of those you're reading a book every day for the year or something? No, it's I have a candle and I get free books all the time and I am a true bibliophile, so I will go through them as often as I can.
Whenever we do one of these things, it is to review something and this is no exception.

Thank you guys so much. They give us the opportunity to see films early so that we can review them for you.
They're new friends of ours. We like them. We're big fans. We're big fans of those guys.
And this was this the night we went and saw this. This was another attempt that I made. This is the third attempt that I made to defeat the Bavarian legend and I am now over three.
I'm sorry. I know what this is. Yeah, not the Bavarian legend is the AMC. It's the big pretzel. Oh, yeah, the $15 pretzel that looks like it comes in a medium pizza box. Why would you do that?
I am going to beat this thing at some point. Is there a one he likes to torture me with because I can't have carbs? Yeah. Is there an incentive? Do you get your name on a tea?
No, but they had a good sauce. Which one was that the Adeshaan mustard? Yeah. Halfway through the film. He's like, he puts it in front of me.
I just give it to him. I'm like, I can't do it. And I even skipped dinner that night because I'm like, I'm beating the Bavarian legend tonight.
Oh, for free. I'm free chickflan. He turned it down. Oh, for the three. One day, it's going to happen. And we would be happy if the theater would like to sponsor us and offer a free Bavarian pretzels.
I'm afraid because you get the cheese sauce and the honey and the Adeshaan mustard both. Not together. There are separate containers.
People are going, is this a beautiful view or a lemon? Let's just go and can you talk about the movie, please? We'd appreciate that. All right. So here's what you need to know.
First of all, I don't even want to know what the budget for the cast on this. Let's all start with it with the main four. And then as we go on, I'm going to tell you who else is in this thing.
So you start with Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen and Mary Steen Bergen. I don't love them all. Already four power hitters.
They play lifelong friends who when they were in college started a book club, hence the name. So every month, they read a new book and they rotate who picks the book.
And they're all in different places in their lives. Diane Keaton plays, and I know this is a stretch, Diane. She is a recently widowed woman with two adult daughters, by the way, played by Kate Assleton from the league and Alicia Silverstone.
I'm so I'm okay. Oh, I'm not even close to starting yet. I'm like, you're at the tip. And I'm in.
Oh, yeah. Okay. Moving on. So then you have Jane Fonda who plays Vivian. The judge. No. Jane Fonda. Okay. Don't. Can I finish this? Okay. The other one. Let me, let me, let me do. Okay. Go ahead. Okay.
Vivian owns a hotel. That's right. Very independent. Very open about her sexuality. Okay. Then you have Candice Bergen who plays sharing. She's a federal judge.
My bad. Recently divorced and trying to find her new normal. She has a cat named Ginsburg, which I think is great.
Toofless made an appearance. And no, no, no. That was that complete opposite of him. And Mary Stringberg in place. Carol. She is a married woman. Has been married for a long time, but the kind of the sparks kind of go away.
By the way, did I mention her husband's played by the great Greg T Nelson, which I still think is kind of meta. Yeah. And she's the. And there is. There is a reflection there into. You see in the trailer. Let me say who else is in this.
But first off, she's the chef and owns a restaurant. Yes. She owns her own restaurant. I got that right. Thank you. And boy, that food looks great, too. Oh, you did. Let me say who else is in this? Can I interest you in Andy Garcia?
Still one of the best things about Godfather three. I'm here. Anybody says one of the only good things. Can I interest you in Don Johnson?
Can I interest you in Ed Beggley, Jr.? Can I interest you in Wallace Sean?
This is like a who's who of 80s. Oh, yeah. And there's another guy in this named Richard Drifus. Oh, I didn't know that. Yes, sir. Okay.
Now you have my. You see what I'm saying? This cast is stout. And let's just put it out there. Don and I went to the screening.
Not the target demographic. No. No. Don't think so. But I enjoyed this film. I enjoyed it very much. And let me tell you why I enjoyed this film.
Two words. Candice Bergen. Yeah, I kind of figured this much. I am a huge fan of Candice Bergen. Always have. She's an amazing actress.
But to me, she's the best part of this film. That doesn't shock me at all. Because her character decides she's going to commit herself to the online dating.
Now, let me, we also talk about what the catalyst of this all is. They get together and it's Vivian's turn to pick the book of the month. Yes. Okay.
And she picks 50 shades of gray. Nothing bad could possibly come from the rest of the film is basically about how this book impacts each of them differently.
Right. I very much enjoyed this film. I'm not going to say I enjoyed it more than I should have. But I got to be honest, I laughed out loud more than once.
You enjoyed it more than you probably thought you were going to because I'm sure you probably thought this is going to be a whip. There was a bar that I set for it.
It was a somewhere like near an inch off the floor. No, no, because given the talent involved. Yeah, like I'm like, there's no way this movie can suck.
Well, but this is not something that under normal circumstances, I would go out of my way to see. Right.
So after an hour 45-ish. Totally okay. Totally okay. Like I was like, you know what? That was enjoyable.
And you have Diane Keaton's character again. She's recently widowed and so her daughters are overly careful with her. Like overly careful.
And that's then that, you know, there's some humor that comes with that. But I can't say I regretted the time that we spent in the theater watching this.
Budget was 35 million. A lot of people took scale. Yeah, that's all I'm saying. It must have, they must have been impressed with the script.
It was funny. It's engaging. The story moves a little fast in some places. I can't say that there's anybody in this that doesn't have good chemistry with their counterparts.
The four female leads, I think, all work really well together. Does everybody get their moment, so to speak?
Kind of sort of. Yeah. And it's not one of those, like everybody has to be, you know, at no point did I feel like anybody was trying to outshine anybody else.
There was a lot of really good give and take. Andy Garcia always great. And I'm not going to tell you who's with who you figure that out.
So except for Cratee Nelson, because that's in the trailer. But so's Andy Garcia. Oh, is he? Yeah. Don Johnson. Yeah, I don't really, really good in this.
He is his character is very, very enjoyable in this. He's kind of stepped his game up a little bit. Like, you know, just that brief little role that he had in Django. Yeah, he had me, he had me rolling.
So, so here's how I've determined that what this film is. It's the summer movie season. And there will be certain individuals who will be dragged to certain films kicking and screaming because it's not their back.
So when that favor has to be returned, this is a really good suggestion because it's not one of those that the person that didn't want to go to the big blow up action film would would hate when they left a theater on this one.
Is that makes any sense? Uh huh. You want to you want to define irony a little bit more? What did Deadpool open opposite of Valentine's Day weekend?
Fifty shades of gray. There you go. There's your counter. And that Deadpool to opening counter to this with 50 shades is a huge price line. So, but I really circle. You know, I even heard Don laugh out loud in a couple of spots. Like, this isn't like, this isn't your normal chick flick type of movie.
Oh, that's good because it sure didn't. I mean, on the surface, it definitely. Yeah, absolutely. On the surface, it does. But Don and I think you'll agree with me. This is enjoyable. Yeah.
Yeah. Um, I was letting you do your things. I want to hear your opinions. I was letting you finish up. I want to hear your opinion. The we walked into this and you were going, I don't know about this one. I was tired. It's been a long day and all that. And I can tell, but you know, even this, I was surprised too. I had to be very intelligent in my hand. And that was important. So that that kind of helped you in during the thing. But this film has to start to cast.
Be on the leaf. And this was your second film of the day. That day too. Yeah. Because I've seen some other film which was just mentioned recently
And the episode before this one. Yeah. Um, but the film. The acting is great. And the thing I liked is it gave the story to each of the people about the same amount of time.
You're right. It's great comedy mixed with good emotion. And this is a thing about dating. I mean, the online thing. Hello, I've been there. I've done that. You lived through that with me, right?

The whole sequence of Candice Bergen's character

The whole thing, the whole part of it.
Yeah, I mean, it sounds like a scream on it.
It's, and I love her.
And she, I mean, and Don said something
that I wanna go back to that I think is really important
that you have to understand about this film.
And Don, let me make sure I heard you correctly.
It's not any one of their stories.
It's all of their stories.
That's good.
So everybody gets their story line.
And it's still intermingles, right?
And it works.
There's probably about 20 times throughout the film
where a couple of them meet and they discuss it
and they get together, then they go to one story,
go back to the group, go back to the another story.
And it doesn't, it might get a little too complicated
on the stories for some people, but I'm not really,
the hour, it's about hour 40 on this film.
Maybe five to 10 minutes can make cut out,
but it went, did drag too long.
The plot kept me interested.
I like the mix of the comedy with the true story.
This is a film not about women.
This is not about what I call the Stupid Smuts series.
This is a film about relationships.
Absolutely, yeah.
I agree with you.
You have a minor spoiler, three, two.
Don't say the one.
They go through all three books of the series.
Okay, so the next month that someone says,
let's do the second book in the series.
So this is over a few months period and stuff like that.
But it's even growing in life.
How some people even changed their life.
Like Jane Fonda did not want relationships.
That was just leave it there.
Yeah, leave it there, leave it there.
Yeah, but this really shows how people could change
even in dating in the older years.
You know, these are not the 20 year olds.
These are people, some in their 40, 50's careers
and people still date.
I mean, I'm 46 and I was in there.
I'm generous, God love them.
Yeah.
So this film, it's not gonna be everybody's film
there's some that kind of film works for a certain crowd
and so it has those things for the women and stuff
but still a man can walk into this and enjoy it.
Yeah, easily.
And again, this is one of those
if you have to pay penance to a film.
Be happy.
It's not a bad choice.
Yeah.
Now you two weren't with us.
So my, I wanna open it to you guys.
Is there anything that questions that you have about this film?
Could you see it going in possibly making a series out of this?
They could.
And maybe one more maybe?
They could.
Would you advise it?
Or would that be like going to the well too often?
There is a way you could do it.
Maybe add another, no, no, there's a way you could do it
with these four that I think would work.
Because you know, there's somebody I would love
to see added to the mix.
I would love to see added to the mix.
Who's that?
Kathy Frickin-Bates.
I would love to see what she would bring to that group.
Maybe.
But there is a way that you could do a sequel
and we can talk about it off air.
That would work for me,
but it's a very, very narrow list of stories.
Fair enough.
If this film kind of had that kind of feel
that Keaton was in also called,
which we read a long time ago.
And so it goes with Michael Douglas in Star Wars.
Oh yeah.
I kind of had that same film, that same look.
They lived in nice houses.
It showed a nice part of life kind of thing
of a successful women.
So I.
And there is a moment in this
that I could be looking too far into it.
But there is a moment that is,
to me was a reference to one of her most famous roles.
Who's Keaton's?
Okay.
That's all I'm gonna leave it right there.
But.
I mean, I'm maybe looking too much into it,
but that's what I got out of it.
But does this film gonna be for the teenagers
and stuff like that?
No.
But it's not demographic towards them.
But still, even a teenager can come and enjoy this thing.
Yeah.
Do you think this movie missed its release target?
What do you mean?
Don't you think it should have been released last week?
Didn't witness have been perfect for-
For Mother's Day?
Well, they did screenings on Mother's Day.
Yeah, but I mean,
I really think they should have opened this wide last week.
But that was Tully was the Mother's Day film.
So it was, they didn't want to compete with that.
I'm sure.
I don't know.
I bet you more people would have gone to see this than Tully.
Oh, this will get a wider release.
Yeah.
This will have a wider release, but-
Not saying that Tully's a bad film,
but I know hardly anything about that film,
but they've been marketing this thing like crazy.
Maybe they didn't want to go against it out of-
And I will say we actually got a couple of trailers
before this film.
Mm-hmm.
One of them I knew about, like,
is everywhere.
The other one is a trailer I've been intrigued about.
And after seeing the trailer,
I'm really interested.
It comes out next month.
And that's all I'm willing to say at this point,
we'll talk about it off air.
Okay.
Anything else for me to get to the final analysis?
No.
Okay, the way we do the final analysis on this show,
we're not going to give you thumbs-up, thumbs-down,
we're not going to give you numbers, letter grades, bookmarks,
anything like that.
No, it's going to be bookmarks.
I'm getting really...
I'm not thinking this.
I am nothing if I'm not predictable, sir.
Especially in these things.
We're going to ask two questions of Don and myself.
Question number one is, will we see this again?
If the answer's no, we're done here.
If the answer's yes, then it's going to be
how far are we willing to go to see it?
From the best of the best of the worst of the best,
here's your order.
I said a theater, down to a twilight showing,
down to a matinee, down to early morning on the weekend,
down to the second run of the dollar theater,
down to leaving your house to get it from red box,
down to Netflix, down to cable.
Don, would you see this again?
Oh, yeah.
How far are you willing to go?
I actually do like the matinee Saturday afternoon
kind of thing, enjoy the film, go to dinner after.
I think I agree with Don there.
Yeah.
Again, we're not the target demo for this,
but we both still enjoy it.
Yeah.
So, you know, go see it during the day,
have a good time with it,
and then go on about your business.
Totally okay with that.
We're good.
