But I'm a good driver if everybody gets up my way. I'm a great driver.
And also joining us is the lady of the house.
And I guess officially now, I guess she's a regular on the show.
Here to talk about this film where she is general and welcome friend.
What? That one. That's the one I want.

I don't know what's going on.

Whatever we do one of these, it is to review something and this is no exception to that.
Edgar Wright is back.
It's the highly anticipated baby driver for us.
Start this whole thing.
Ready to sing?
Ready.
All right.
In the great marketing.
Nothing.
Josh, the whole crew.
Our best friends.
We love them.
And for the record, Jen was singing,
Jen was not.
Yeah.
So, Jen won't.
I'm just saying, for the record.
If I get a channel prod, maybe I might be you.
And you might be kidding.
All right. Let's just, let's just run this thing.
Shall we?
All right.
John birth, Bernthal, John Ham, Eliza Gonzalez, Lily James, Kevin Spacey, Sky Ferreira,
Jamie Foxx.
A lot of people in this thing.
So,
Ansel Elgort plays the title character, Baby.
Baby is oddly enough.
A driver.
He is a getaway driver who is paying off a debt he owes to a gangster,
played by Kevin Spacey.
He's very good at what he does.
And once they settle up, he decides he wants to get out,
and he wants to just kind of settle down,
because he's been saving his money.
And he wants to settle down with his native friend,
a waitress at a local diner named Deborah.
But, Kevin Spacey decides that,
no, you're not quite done there, Homer.
He plays dock, by the way.
Not that docked.
In the sides, he wants to go,
go one more go round.
And that's all I'm willing to say.
He's kind of the evil genius now.
And the thing about Baby is he always wears headphones.
Because when he was a child,
he was involved in an accident that gives him a permanent ringing in his ears
and having music played through an MP3 player of which he has many.
It helps drown out the ringing in his ears.
It also helps him concentrate.
Don't forget about the sunglasses, too.
He always has sunglasses.
He also bases his operation
within the operation on where he is in the specific songs
that he's programmed for that particular operation.
Holy cow, I ran out of breath at the end of that.
The music is almost its own character.
It propels the plot just as much as the script does.
And let's just go ahead and get right into it.
This movie's amazing.
It is just about a solid two hours and it's sailed.
Watch gauge, 50 minutes.
Ooh, that's the number two by itself.
I mean, this movie goes that quickly.
The only way I can describe this film,
La La Land with guns.
It's the only way I could describe.
Because there's choreography,
there's actually lip syncing to the songs at some points that are playing.
Edgar Wright was like he watched a musical
and then he watched something Tarantino and went,
you know what?
I can combine that.
And he does.
I was thinking he watched Rima Williams, The Adventure begins.
I mean, he did write this.
No pun intended.
He is the screenwriter and the director.
So he pretty much controlled the whole bit here.
After knowing what he was going to do with Ant-Man
and having to leave that project in my opinion thankfully.
So he gets a pass with me because of this film.
This film is so well done on every level.
Every level.
It is such a sucker punch from out of nowhere.
I know whenever we were covering a film festival several weeks back.
And we were talking to a lot of participants in this film festival.
And we asked them what film they were looking forward to more than anything else this summer.
What would you say?
A good 70 to 80% of them kept saying this film.
Yeah.
One even over Guardians.
Well, it was Guardians 2 and then this film and several of them were both.
Right.
Well, at that point Guardians had already released.
Right.
So some of them had already released.
And they hadn't seen it yet.
But you know, of all the films that were coming out.
It seemed like this was their go-to.
Over and over.
And I knew next to nothing about it back when we were talking to them.
I'm like, I need to look into this thing.
I mean, I'd seen the trailer.
And I was very much looking forward to it.
I went home that night and watched trailer and went,
Okay.
Yeah.
These kids know what to talk about.
Yeah.
Because this thing looks freaking amazing.
And I believe there were bribery offers on the air of being the plus one for this.
I think I offered to buy you dinner.
And then I didn't want to make dot to it.
But you know, I'll do it another time when it comes.
Cost me nothing.
You know what I mean?
This movie is so good on every level.
I was so impressed with this.
Uh, I told, uh, I told my plus one for the evening that you know that filling that
you had the first time you saw a die hard.
When you walked into that theater, not really knowing what to expect because it was a
Bruce Willis film.
And all he'd really done at that point was moon lighting.
And you weren't expecting to be blown out of the back of the theater as hard as you were.
That's pretty much how I felt here.
This is, it's one of those films that I feel like if I watched it again, I'm going to
find stuff I missed the first time it didn't know I missed it.
Mm-hmm.
Because up and Jasper agrees with me.
Jasper is on board with that assessment.
You see us.
You stay out of here.
And on me, some of the acting in this because I've never hated Jamie Foxx.
The character he plays in this.
He does it so well.
I walked away, hating Jamie Foxx.
Jamie Foxx.
That is the where, that's where we're going to differ.
Because he's very over the top in this for me.
If there is a critique I have of this, it is his performance.
Really.
But by the same token, I don't know why I'm saying it that way.
Because he's Jamie Foxx.
That's what you're going to get.
But he usually plays the good guy.
He plays the.
No, I'm not always perfect.
Well, you know, you really like it.
But I'm just saying overall generally he plays more of a fan favorite instead of a complete
church.
What he does in the here.
He plays a complete jerk in this thing.
He's a bleepy bleepy bleepy.
Yeah.
And I think that's what it is is there's also some.
Maybe mental going on with the character.
And I think those two together.
It's just you're very uncomfortable around it.
And it is an over the top character.
But I think it had to be to convey.
What he's supposed to say.
I can see where you're going there.
It just he didn't take me out of it.
Thankfully.
But it was close in a couple of sections.
Does he just not do evil?
Well, I don't know that he doesn't do evil.
Well, I just think that he has to be so bigger than life all the time.
Brash and cocky I can deal with.
But, you know, it's that I got to be on your face all the time.
Yeah.
Yeah.
We get to do your bad guy.
Yeah.
And maybe that's why I hated him because he was that guy who.
Yeah.
Everybody hates.
I guess in your mind he was doing his job.
But for me, it just didn't work.
It kept me in it.
But it wasn't.
I have to give it to Elgord on this, especially.
Do one of my favorite roles he does or part said he does.
Is with CJ Jones who plays the foster father who's deaf.
Who's deaf in real life?
Oh, is he really?
Yes.
And those two, the character bond they had on film.
Makes shows a totally different side of the guy who.
Is just out there for kind of the paycheck to pay back and everything like that.
So I really love the characterization on that.
Well, and some of the.
Yeah.
Answers facial expressions.
I mean, he says so much with just face without actually saying anything.
Or he's lip syncing or he's at a moment.
But you read so much out of him visually.
Oh, he's great in this.
He's absolutely great in this.
And I love how you do, you know, sit there with the glasses on in your bugs
And then still read the lips and there's one scene where he says,
shove it to the other guy when he says repeat something.
Yeah.
Question.
So great act.
Yeah.
One thing I really have to bring up.

I really put on there that this soundtrack is.
It is two discs for people buying a physical copy by.
And literally, I mean, we're watching the credits.
And they did page by page.
It wasn't rolling credits.
Oh, yeah.
And it was what five six pages of the parts of the.
Just music every day.
And some deep cuts on stuff, which was impressive.
And it's not all on the soundtrack.
I wish it was.
I admit, I bought the $20 download from Apple for 30 songs.
And I've got stuck in traffic on the way over here and had it cranked when I got past the
record.
Made it here in no time because I'm thinking I'm baby, driver, you know.
No.
Oops.
So glad everyone was at the record.
Not following behind me.
I really, really, really liked how this choreography, this cinematography.
I really love those chases.
And nothing, which I put in my review that.
I let off that car chases.
There's some classics.
The French connection.
Well, mm-hmm.
Okay.
Mm-hmm.
This one here.
This.
A lot of films that come out lately.
Put a car chase in there thinking no thought into it.
Let's just have some actions.
And it's out of sequence.
Or there's a big crash.
And then two set in this show is like a car being damaged.
And two scenes later or two frames later, the cars fixed magically.
They really put a lot into these speed chases in this film.
I was really impressed by a by a by a special show.
I mean, this show we showed Atlanta well.
I think this film really shows a chase choreography.
Even some of the physical choreography, like especially in the beginning.
When he's on the.
He's on the coffee run.
And you're actually seeing the lyrics to the songs being projected on different things.
As he's walking around.
Yeah.
That's where I got that law off the law law.
I didn't feel from it.
That it just it was exactly what it had to be.
And it really had it.
Even the songs made emotions.
And there's wondering, there's one scene where he's in the junkyard.
He's paid off, right?
He's free, suppose.
Mm-hmm.
And he plays that certain song.
And now you find out why.
Because the song made something out of it.
Well, it's like Jen said this.
The soundtrack is its own character that helps propel the plot forward just as much as the script does.
And that to me is the brilliance of this film.
Yeah.
Back.
There are only certain directors that can tap into that.
I think we.
I think I brought it up when we saw Aloha that.
Cameron Crow has got a real knack for doing that.
Terrentino has a knack renewing that.
Kevin.
Kevin Smith has a knack for doing that.
And Edgar Wright is right up there.
Just this cement him in that pantheon of directors that just get it.
Yeah.
They know how to tie a song to a scene to evoke a very specific emotion.
They make it work.
And that's how it goes.
Except for Fox.
What else did you not like about this?
If I had to have one critique, that would be it.
It would be Jamie Foxx.
It's just a little over the top for me.
And to me.
I really can't even say that that's a.
I can't say I didn't like Foxx.
And you're not supposed to like him.
But you know, he does come off as kind of a.
I guess he's still an electro mode.
He comes off as a kind of a comic bookish type villain.
But then you have spacey that fully rounds out of villain to where.
Yeah.
He's he's looking out for number one, which is himself.
But then you see that he actually has his own battles going on within himself.
He's way more human than most villains are ever portrayed.
And and Ham's portrayal.
I really get that and that never came off as forced.
You know, whereas Foxy looked like he was just trying to out badass everybody in the room.
And I don't know.
I don't know if that's.
And see to me, I thought that was part of the character.
And it probably is part of the character wasn't he was supposed to try and be that.
I'm the biggest badass.
I'm going to walk in and punch somebody.
If I go into jail and everybody's going to know.
I'm the one to watch out for.
But I think that the genius there is the cast around him is also so strong.
And they can kind of pull that in a little bit.
So it doesn't push it into that place.
Mm-hmm.
Where I where again, I wasn't taken out of it.
But there were a couple of moments that got close.
Yeah.
But there was that cast is so strong.
They're able to reel it back in to keep me on task.
It's very well balanced.
I want to ask the same question to you.
What's your biggest complaint of the film to chat into Jen?
Dead.
It wasn't another hour long.
Honestly, I have no issues with this film.
My bladder could not have taken another.
On mind, there were one little thing maybe two little things that I can't discuss because it'll give away too much.
That is kind of like, wait, how do we jump from here to here?
So there was a little tiny plot hole for me.
But the movie still worked.
It's just being me and having watched too many episodes of Murder She Writer or something.
That's fair.
Anything else we'll get to the final analysis?
Alright, the way we do the final analysis on the show.
We're not going to give you thumbs up thumbs down.
We're not going to give you letter grades, numbers, you know, four stolen cards or whatever.

No, we're done here.

Full price at the theater.
Twilight, Matt and A.
Early morning, second run at the dollar theater.
Actually, leaving your house to get it from red box, streaming on Netflix or cable.

Would you see this film again?
Yes.
How far are you willing to go?
Full price or if someone wants to take me on a date.
Just put it out there for your gentleman.
Don, would you see this again?
Yes, definitely.
How far are you willing to go?
I'm going to say Twilight to full price.
So again, right there on the edge.
There was a couple plot things in that one point.
I think a little too action-y.
I'm going to grate it on a curve because this is the 300th one.
Yes.
He's going to be real with.
Yeah.
Charlie loved it though.
Dolby atmosphere.
I go full.
That'd be a hell of a thing.
I go whole hog on this.
I'm going to go out on a lamb right now and say that this is my favorite film
of the year so far.
Wow.
That's them.
That's fighting work.
Absolutely.
My doorbell agrees with you.
I love everything.
I would see this again.
I'm going to put it out there, though.
Not my favorite film of the year,
but it probably will land in the top 10 by the time it's all set and done.
Not only would I pay full price to see this again.
I will buy this on Blu-ray because I want to hear it in my home theater.
I would pay full price to take somebody with me if they didn't have the money for it.
Yeah.
This movie is that good.
It is Edgar Wright's latest film.
It is Baby Driver.
