Greetings, Empire member and or members.
If you're hearing the sound of my voice it means the following conditions have been met.
At least once in your life you've checked out the Clubhouse podcast live every Sunday night,
7 Eastern 4 Pacific, your one-stop shop for all things pop culture.
It also means you've checked out our little show on your favorite podcast app, because
it's time for another.
I Tone's Exclusive True Believers!
We've reached the milestone, another one actually.
This is iTunes exclusive number 375.
Unbelievable.
In less than 5 years we've done 370, we probably might hit over 400 by the time the 5th anniversary
of this thing comes around.
This part of it.
We're approaching our 8th anniversary, a total.
You can believe we've done this over 800 times, but that's sinking kids.
Welcome.
My name is Rob on the Executive Producer of the Clubhouse podcast, and if anybody in this
room spoils one frame of what we're going to talk about, I will bury you in a shallow grave
by the side of the freeway, because I've not yet seen this movie, and I have to wait
at least another 6 days.
From when we record this, it's all I'm saying.
I've spoken my piece.
Joining me across the desk at the co-host chair is my co-host, and a man who feels his
life is infinite.
He is Chad.
I thought a vein was going to rupture in your forehead.
Dude, I've been really, really good with this.
I have avoided so many spoilers.
I almost feel like for the next week I have to avoid social media.
Probably wouldn't be a mad idea.
Because some idiot out there is going to do the dog on thing.
Someone's going to be that guy.
Rounding out the day is the official fact checker at this show, and boy, this is going
to get interesting.
You may know him as Fondango, but his mom and even Don Ford, I'm going to call him Don
Ford.
I'm an interesting person, because I'm glad, and I'm sad, and dog on it up good enough.
It's I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and dog on it people like me.
I'm doing the Don Ford version, I want to be original.
You think I could shove my head through that wall right there?
I reckon you didn't.
Whatever we do one of these things, it is to review something, and this is no exception.
It's ten years to the day.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe began with a huge gamble on a little movie called Iron Man,
and it all culminates in Avengers Infinity War.
Ford, start this whole thing?
Yes, sir.
I think Delaney and everybody at 11ston and Susan Jig was for Disney for the invite.
Thank you guys so much.
Thank you so much.
Thank you so much.
They let us see movies early so that we can talk to you guys about them and help you
spend your entertainment dollar wisely.
Like I said, ten years, what's it been, 18 films?
I believe this is the 19th, yes.
We're in phase three of the MCU.
Thanos has arrived, played by the great Josh Brolin, who's going to be in another Marvel
movie in about three weeks, and he is chasing the Infinity Stones.
You've seen them referenced as the movies have gone on.
As we're going into this film, there's one that we haven't seen.
I don't want to know.
I have theories, but I don't want to know.
It's the Don Ford stolen it.
That one's hollow, and it does nothing.
I can't.
I can't.
So as Thanos goes on his quest, and yes, that's a pun for those comic books out there, to
collect all of these stones, all of the Marvel heroes that we've dealt with for the last
ten years on screen have come together to try to stop him.
And that's as far as I want to go.
That's as far as I'm going to go.
Now.
Let me ask, is Ant-Man one of the Marvel?
I don't know.
Okay.
That's your next Marvel film, Ant-Man, so we say, I'm almost.
You said almost, you said all the Marvels, almost all the Marvel characters.
Okay, Don.
Yeah.
I didn't know that.
Okay.
I'm sorry.
Okay.
Okay.
Because you see all of them.
I'm sorry.
All right.
I'm going to keep this spoiler free.
Yeah.
You've done a great job.
So far.
Okay.
That's why I froze.
This is the moment I was like 535 for those of you playing the home game.
Two hours and then 30 minutes.
Originally, the original kind of saw said 243, but now it's clocking in the 227.
That's what they're saying now.
I don't know if you'd even really be able to tell the difference.
Opened on Rotten Tomatoes at 86%.
As of this recording, it has gone up to points to 88%.
Okay.
Good.
As we're doing this, there are people seeing this movie right now.
As we're recording this, it has been unleashed on the masses.
This is not a spoiler because I know it.
This is going to be a two-part deal.
Right.
Because originally it was called part one and the next one was called part two.
Directed by the Russo brothers who brought us Captain America's two and three.
So I have a level of relaxation there because I love both of those films.
They're standouts, even though I like the second one better because that wasn't Civil
War.
That was Captain America's Civil War.
You can go back and hear my thoughts on that in a previous episode.
But there's a lot going on here because you're talking what, probably 70 characters on
the outside.
Yeah.
I'm in multiple places because when we last left the Guardians of the Galaxy, they were
in the middle of nowhere and then they wind up hooked up with Thor because of the extra
scene at the end of Thor Ragnarok.
Then you've got all the heroes that are on Earth that, as we know, the Avengers after
Civil War.
They're fractured, Tony and Cap are still on opposite sides of things and Black Panther
showed us that Bucky is up and running, almost literally.
So we've got people all over the place, all over the globe, all over the galaxy, all
over the universe, and this one guy who wants to control all of it because if you have
all six Infinity Stones, you are a god.
You can do anything you want.
Now, this being based, I'm assuming, on the Infinity Gauntlet, one of my favorite comic book
stories in the history of-
Do you want me to confirm or do I-
No, I do not want to confirm or-
Okay.
I don't.
Okay.
Part of me does.
Okay.
But the rest of me doesn't.
And the doesn't part overrides this part that does.
Let's just get into it.
This is-
Yeah, you guys have to understand that this is going to be a minefield of an abyss.
And we've already stepped on one.
We've already stepped on one.
I'm not upset, don't-
I'm not upset.
But you didn't- there was no malicious intent.
I know that.
But-
How do we talk about this as carefully as possible?
I mean, I guess we can start, let's just start visually.
Oh God.
Beautiful.
Let's just start visually.
The fun of-
The fun of-
The fun of-
The fun of-
The fun of-
The fun of-
The fun of-
Let's just start visually.
The fun of-
The fun of-
The fun of-
The fun of-
The fun of-
That's our website now we did not get to see this in 3d, but I really feel watching looking back at through this film
That 3d may enhance it with a lot of the battles just like we never saw a rampage in 3d
But then when I saw with the fantastic faith forward, I saw it in 3d
Oh did you yeah, okay, and that space scene and the final that really enhanced but
This this one I will look in back with all the fight scenes and all that stuff
Spoiler there's there's fight scenes with shocker. That's in the trailer. That's fine that
There's that visually beautiful. I think 3d wouldn't have to spill from it
I think it would really help it be honest with you. Okay, so visually over low beautiful
You know they got the Disney studio. They got the best studios in the world
They spent the budgets about 400 millions what I read at one point. There's a three picture deal with the russos
That we're gonna total a billion so like 35 a piece or somewhere between three four
So you know they spent the money on this and they're gonna make a billion dollars off this you know that kind of thing
But visually beautiful. They're projecting what a 235 million dollar opening domestically
I don't know that I'm gonna set it that high of it. That's what they're projecting. I think I think 200 would be successful
I think Adam tick is it Adam tickets that says it's their largest it's just it's their largest pre-sell ever
So let's talk about bro one, okay, because this is a guy that is
somehow
Crossing the streams because they'll be playing cable here in about three weeks
No country from old man. I mean this guy. He no, I mean, I don't know who he is, but how is he as this because this is a character that
demands gravitas
He's a titan for a reason right and not the DC style. This is Marvel's titan's right
This is a guy that is just pure evil
No other way to say it
How does he measure up because he of course he's got to be CGI because Thanos is like the size of my car
Basically as voice you could say maybe they did the suits or whatever with the
He did the motion capture. He did all the motion capture and the right
He
He crushes it. Okay, he crushes it. He's he's he's got that same kind of mentality that you always talk how you describe Luther
Everybody should just if he everything would be just fine if you just let it run. That's doom. That's doom. Is it?
It's doom. I thought that's how you're not a bad guy
But if you just let me run the world it would be a better place. Okay. Okay. Okay. I thought that's
How you describe Luther but yeah, no, Luther's a villain. Yeah, doom doesn't see himself as a villain. Luther knows he's a villain. Okay
But yeah, he he sees his
The the mission that he's on as he's doing the universe a favor
By trying to do what he's doing
I don't know how to feel about that
But that's what the film is right. I'm just saying knowing the source material
It's completely different motives
So let's just stop that train right there. Yeah, cuz we're we're flooring. I know we're learning the dangerous territory. We're walking on the edge
Is it not done if you're in your own in your written review? Well located at WWW dot the clubhouse podcast dot com. That's our website still
You mentioned that it was too long. Yeah
Two and a half hours it is yeah, that's kind of standard issue though
Right, okay, but that's you guys are talking this whole review of somebody who's gonna listen who has the Greek cred
I don't have it right which you don't which was very well documented on the show
And so but you mentioned that it was too long Chad. What was your feeling from a pacing standpoint?
I it didn't feel it not to me. Okay. I mean, it's was there was there a watch gauge on this
Okay, not for me, but
For instance, you know, you're talking so much technical stuff that yes, you guys know the stories
This is your genre. This is your thing. This is your big baby kind of thing
A lot of people are gonna be like me who are not gonna know Tim buck two from Tim buck D
Okay, so I mean I don't know that I would go that far
I think there'll be a lot of people that will go but I think it's because I don't know that it will be as overwhelming as my thing
As watching this and you know, I had different points of view. Yes, I'm gonna say it's overall. I did like the film
Okay, if I was doing Ron tomatoes, I give it a fresh. Okay. Okay, I get that out of the way fair
It was still fun movie, but there was at least I was kind of going all right there there there there there
There mindless pointless action mindless pointless action mindless pointless action that they just have an action for action for action sake
That's it's your opinion and you're entitled to it. I respect you. He's ready to blog a gasket
No, but that's fine, but I know where I know where his brain is going to but because he looks at it through different
I understand that you do, but I can I can kind of under I understand where you're coming from
I mean they get to cut 20 minutes of action out and still in the same film
Usually it's still now you also mentioned in your written review that they jumped around a little
This became a game of thrones trying to watch this thing now
Gamer, I've looked at you in the thrones, but they got six seven storylines going on at once right in game of thrones and
They got and you'll see in one one episode. They'll go to this this group of that group of that group
That's what they do in this film you you do not see
This is not a big spoiler, but you don't see all the superheroes together at one place out once that does not happen in this film
Right, because it's part of the deal. So you're gonna have six seven different groups going on doing their thing
And it goes from group one to group two to group three back to group one back to group five back to group four to five to four
Do you feel it wait? It kind of collapse under its own weight in that sense? I think it just got okay
I'm trying to keep up with this group there. They're going to back there
It's just like them jumping around to six seven different groups up once it got a little confusing like you know thrones
That's the best one gonna put it chat
Didn't have that issue for me, okay, because this thing has so many moving parts and
You kind of knew all you got to do is take one look at the one sheet and you absolutely and you know
There's no way they're gonna be able to fit all these guys on screen at once. It's impossible
So you're gonna have to break them in a little factions and we're gonna have to deal with
Issues and crises as they as they get thrown in you know in whatever direction they're going in
But it all leads somewhere
You know the every every fight has a purpose
every every character has an arc
That you see maybe not play out to completion
But you definitely see it play out
Let me ask you this I'm gonna say this to the please do that
The people who are gonna want that one big battle scene at the end with all the superhills together
Ticking on the careful the the food in the back. Careful does not happen careful. So I'm just saying that okay
That's all I'm gonna say is you're not gonna get that huge huge
That's the chat was just saying you'll be physically impossible to do that. They could have done it
But it's not gonna happen for the people that want it, but all right you can stay with me. Yeah
And you may not have the answer to this
But it's something that I've been been wrestling with for a few days now
If I were someone that had never seen a Marvel film before
I know this is not a jumping on point physical impossibility however my question is
How far back would I have to go to truly get the impact of this film winter soldier
So if I went back to winter soldier and watched everything from winter soldier forward
Which would probably be in the neighborhood of six seven eight films
I think so I think now granted it's not going to explain
In my new detail about where all the stones come from and where they're placed and how they played into the thread of the MCU
But I think it will get you caught up very well and explain a lot of
What we see transpire on this film
I think it'll fill in a lot of the gaps that you might be missing if you came in cold
Don you thoughts on that?
That's it. I can't I can't
Okay, I just I yeah, I just wonder if you had an idea and I like to say it's okay
This is the first total Marvel film for somebody to watch your block. You can go on. Yeah, you're your head
I knew going in that this wasn't gonna be a good good good because we talked about black panther being a good jumping on point
For people that wanted to start right and I want to bring up that
I love black panther. I know you say right now. It's probably gonna make my top 10 of the year
More than like fair enough, okay
That had a real heartfelt story and I put my review again a lot of these Marvel films for the people that don't have the Greek crib like me
It's just the normal you got the bad dude trying to take over the universe or destroy the universe and destroy earth
And the super heroes get together and try to stop them from his evil diolomical plot
How many of the what that's what I said how many films are there been so far 16 19 18 18 18 19
This is number 19 black panther not counting black panther. How many of those 19 did not have that same basic plot again
It's the same thing over and over that dude trying to that's the superhero formula. That's that's yeah
But black panther wasn't it did it wasn't
This was a personal real live emotional film right well
I wouldn't say real life because what kind of
But the first Iron Man was about Tony's journey. Yeah, I but you know the first Captain America
That was black panther was an origin story. Yeah, and in an origin story you're going to deal with the personal issues at somebody
I understand that but a lot of these about ten of them is just that normal plot again
Because you've already established the origin so you have to have them fight somebody. Yeah, but it's that same basic plot bad
Dude trying to rule the universe. Yeah, that's the formula
Civil war maybe not so much. Well, I guess Baron Baron Zemo kind of for me not knowing all the personal stories at the second cousin of Iron Man
Who married the first uncle of black panther who married, you know
Dr. Stranges. No, that's game of thrones. Yeah, but that's
That some people just can't keep up with that anything else. You want to guys want to mention?
Yes, I want to say that this is spoiler free spoiler free better be better be
Me and some other people who don't have the Greek cred
When this ending came in when it leaves it open for the next 600 Marvel films because they're probably gonna make that many
um
The ending we're like
Have a question here. Well, something explain what's going on
But you know what but see that's that's fine by me
Because I've said going into this thing that there's only one way this film can end that will make me happy and it's it's
It might in my head that ending is a cliffhanger and that's fine by that's fine
But they're ending a lot of us who don't we're like what in the head? Yeah, but you but you knew but you knew this was gonna be explain
But you knew this was gonna be a two-parter. How did you not expect it to be a cliffhanger? I didn't know it's supposed to be a two-parter
We talked about that on the show. I forgot I
But I mean the ending got there's certain things that got confusing. We're like what in the head just happened here
I mean, I said we don't I will have to revisit this after I see this film yeah, Rob you'll be fine
Yeah, Rob and I'll say you'll be happy with the film. You're gonna like it. It's gonna be a late night when I see it
I know but I'm just saying
The people like me were kind of like what happened here. I want I want done. I want to say to you
What the fans in Philadelphia were there a basketball team have been saying for five years. Yeah, trust the process
Okay, just trust process. Yeah, trust process. I mean just got we're like what all right?
Well, let's get to the final analysis before this minefield gets a little deeper
The way we're gonna do the final analysis on the show we're not gonna give you thumbs up thumbs down
We're not gonna give you numbers letter grades infinity stones anything like that
And ask two questions question number one is would these gentlemen see this film again?
If the answers know then we're done here if the answers yes
Then the answer becomes or the question becomes
How far are they willing to go to do it? Here's from the best of the best the worst of the best here is the spectrum
Full price of the theater down to twilight down to matinee down to early morning on a weekend
Down to second run at the dollar theater down to actually leaving your house and getting it from red box down to streaming on Netflix
Down to waiting for it on cable. Don would you see this again? Yeah, what how far are you willing to go?
Um, I would say I'm gonna recommend it for the non-greet creditors
Saturday afternoon 3d. Okay 3d. See you in 3d. I'm good. Yeah. All right chat. It's still fun, but just
But chat oh god yeah, okay, and
Well, I can tell you that my plan is to go see it this weekend early in the morning
Okay, it's only because I'm pretty sure that's gonna be the only way I'm gonna get a ticket in
I will be seeing this at a 2d showing next week
My goal as tends to be a films of this ilk is to get to the Dolby admis. Let me know
So let me know I will be there. I may have to wait a month to do it
But or at least until Deadpool comes out when you pull that trigger. Let me know. I'll be right there
But that's my goal. I know I can't see it this weekend because this weekend is just absolutely packed out for us
But it is the Russo brothers and it is here and it is Avengers Infinity War
Brothers hoping yes, and we have that guy think Delaney and everybody at Levinson and Susan Jacobs Disney the whole group
