My name is Rob and I am the executive producer of the clubhouse podcast and I don't
even know if I consider myself an adult.
I've grown up but I don't know if I'm an adult.
But I'm not alone for this particular episode, Jordan me across the desk as he does
each and every time we do one of these is a man who you could say is beginning a new career.
He is Chad, welcome sir.

I thought that was your computer making noise.
Really?
No, I thought there was something like your computer needed to realize it was the B2B2B2 thing.
What is it with your phone?
You not be able to hear it go off or feel it go off and I do.
I'm in the groove dude.
I'm in my zone.
He had the phone in his pocket one day it went off and he didn't hear it.
He's still joining me across the desk as the official fact checker of this show.
And a man who took swimming lessons when he was 14.
You may know him as Fondon Go, but his mom and even Don Ford I'm going to call him Don Ford
welcome sir.
Actually my swimming lessons were probably about age 4.
My dad just threw me in the river and the lake and said, you know, get going.
I think I took.
I'm pretty sure I did take swimming lessons but I don't remember a lot about it.
I just remember if I finally swimming and that was it.
No my uncle will he just threw me in the lake.
That was it.
One way to learn.
Yeah, I guess.
Whatever we do one of these particular.
It's usually to review something and this is no exception.
Today we are we are interviewing.
We are reviewing the new movie directed by Ross Katz called Adult Beginners.
This debuted at South by Southwest a few months ago.
Currently this is one of those where it's going to hit theaters and VOD at the same time.
So if you don't want to go to a movie theater and you're so interested in this film.

Stars Nick Crowell you might know is ruxin from the league.
Also rose burned.
Also coconut creek high school alumni and Emmy Award winner Bobby Canna Valley.
Joel McHale is in this.
Paula Garciss who you might remember from the shield.
Josh Charles Jane Krakowski Bobby Moynihan Mike Berbiglia.
Also Jason Metzucas who you might know is raffee from the shield.
I'm from the league it's in this a little bit.
Huge cast in this deal.
Basically here's the story.
Nick Crowell plays a guy by the name of Jake.
And Jake is on the verge of inventing a affordable, wearable technology.
So he has this big party in his house.
And then something goes horribly wrong.
And then doing so he literally loses everything.
So he chooses to go back to his hometown out in the suburbs from New York City.
And back to live with his sister and brother-in-law.
Who are living in the house they all grew up in.
And the only stipulation they put on in my city and say,
You know, as long as you need to.
But you get to take care of our son, Teddy.
Because you know, they care is expensive.
You're going to be here.
Take care of the kid.
And that's pretty much all you need to know at this point.
Don and I got to check this out.
But for again, we got to think our best friends.
Go ahead, sir.

They're too good.
They're too good.

We'll take that to the graves there.

Adult beginners.
Ross Katz.
Not a lot of directing under his wing.
He did the Kevin Bacon HBO film taking chance in 2009.
And he's got another movie coming up next year.
But really he's more known as a producer.
Yeah.
He's producing stuff.
Blossom's translation stuff like that.
Marie Antoinette in the bedroom.
What did you feel about the way he shot this thing?
On the work.
It was normal.
But I don't think this is not going to be something that's going to be a big sci-fi hit
where you have to have a look or a naked film or not a sci-fi film.
You're on the same.
But I mean, I know, look, it was normal for what it needs.
But it didn't need that special look.
Like a sci-fi film or something like that.
It's something that that I talk about in my written review at www.theclubhousepodcast.com, which is our website.
A lot of people see this as indie film.
And indie film and Chad, you can chime in on this as well.
I know you can chance to join us for this.
But I know you can join this part of the discussion.
Indy film to me isn't indie film anymore.
No, it's not.
Because technology has moved so fast, so quickly,
that you can shoot a quote unquote low budget film
and give it the look of a more big budget, a big studio film.
And that's kind of what this was for me.
I think Chad's new, what his vision was for the screenplay,
which one of the stars Nick Crowl co-wrote,
also produced by the do-ploss brothers, who, one of whom,
is also in the league.
This is like an FX star banana.
Pretty much totally.
But I thought it was the look was right for what it wanted to be.
Yeah, it was.
But didn't he have to be a big bang or something like that?
Exactly.
If it's a perfect mode for what the film is.
I didn't feel there was anything that was too indulgent.
I felt it was shot like a movie of this caliber should be shot.
Totally.
It's a character driven piece, so just let the actors do what they do.
Speaking of the actors, I really love the chemistry of this cast.
Rose Buren and Bobby Cannibalie, who are dating in real life.
So they could, you know, note, no chemistry problems there.
Nick Crowl playing the character that Nick Crowl tends to play.
Kind of jerky kind of, I'm not as much jerky as he plays Ruxon on the league.
But that same type of character may be toned down just a little bit.
Because things don't go his way.
Whereas Ruxon on the league fills everything goes his way.
Watching the league your communist.
But I really thought that the three of them had really good chemistry together.
You really felt like they were family.
I called this in my review The Skeleton Twins Without The Darkness.
Because Skeleton Twins, one of my favorite films from last year, had a lot of dark,
a very big dark underbelly to it.
Where this was a lot lighter.
There was some drama to it, but it was again lighter than the Skeleton Twins.
But the same kind of preference.
Brother and sister get estranged.
Kind of have to be around each other again.
But I really, I thought the cast worked really well.
I really enjoyed the work of Caleb and Matthew Paddock, the twins who play Teddy.
I didn't know they were twins.
In most films like this when you have kids that young.
It's better, it's easier to work with twins.
Because you can only work for them as for a certain amount of time.
Okay.
So if you use twins, you can get twice as much work.
Okay.
Yeah.
On their chemistry.

Believe it or not, that chemistry showed in a very serious scene at where they go.
Him and sister go out.
We'll crawl in the sister go out for the night.
Okay.
And about halfway through the clock.
Exactly.
Two thirds of the world.
Yeah.
Down the town.
But by the end of the club scene, something just brought up.
Of course we're being spoiler free.
Correct.
Real seriousness.
Which I really liked at that point.
I really did.
So they did have the chemistry totally.
I thought.
Unfortunately.
Which I was put to website.
This plot.
I did not find.
Interesting at all.
It was so predictable.
I predicted 90% of the movie after the first 10 minutes.
And that's a very interesting dynamic when you review films.
Yeah.
Specifically.
For you, predictability is a big factor when you review films.
For me, it's a little bit different.
I'm kind of of that older cynical age where I'm at the point where it's like,
It's hard for Hollywood to come up with new ideas for me.
So predictability in a film like this does it bother me as much as I know it bothers you.
Yeah.
Of course you're going to have a standard thing since stuff.
Which I totally live with.
But when I saw this and the first 10 minutes came in,
I just go, there's not going to be anything special.
And 90% of the movie I predicted within the first 10 minutes that came true,
unfortunately.
You know, I just, there was a couple turns like the issue that was brought up at the club scene,
which I just talked about earlier.
That kind of threw me for a little picture, really didn't enjoy.
Okay.
That was one of the highlights of the film.
But the plot was just nothing to me, unfortunately.
I just kind of, and unfortunately, there are some great comedy moments.
One is him taking his nephew to the basketball court.
Yes.
That was a funny moment.
Okay.
But Nick calls attempt to comedy in this, just turn me off.
Really?
Yeah.
I put this in my review that he's just a self-centered, self-restriarch in this film.
And see, and that comedy does not really do too well for me, unfortunately.
For me, again, I talked about earlier.
Being some fan of the league, like I am, and knowing his character for the league,
I guess because you don't watch that show.
I have the block off on the comedy.
No, no, no, it's not.
We all know you are, but what I'm saying at the point is, I'm so used to him in that kind of a role.
It was more of a natural thing for me watching this film.
Again, he's a more tuned down version of Ruxon, but there's Ruxon in this character.
I mean, this reminded me so much of Uncle Buck in a way, but can't he hit it out of the park in that film?
I mean, when you wrote that in your review, I was kind of hitting sideways.
I'm not in a bad way.
Yeah.
I didn't get the Uncle Buck thing out of it, but when you said that, I was like, I could see how he saw that.
Exactly.
And that's just what kind of hit to me, unfortunately.
But can't he did it right?
Cole, my opinion, and this attempt, he has a team set of comedy, which I put a team set comedy for me.
He did not hit out most of the time.
There were a few funny moments, like the playground scene, which I really did love.
But I'm a self-centered, self-ist jerk.
I'm making comedy out of this.
I hate life.
It just didn't work for me in this film, unfortunately.
The thing for me that was kind of weird is you had a lot of people that were built in the opening credits
that it takes me longer to say the sentence that they were in the film.
Yeah.
Like Mike Brabiglia, who's one of my favorite comics.
He's in it for like 20 seconds.
Somebody like Joel McHale, hosts of the soup.
Yeah, big fan.
He's in it maybe five minutes.
Yeah.
Where it's more about your three main characters than everybody did.
But everybody did a great job.
Oh yeah, totally.
It's just for a quote with a comedy hit.
I mean, I give the open mind totally to about 10 minutes into it.
15 minutes into it.
I go, if this stage like it does, I'm not going to, I don't think I'm going to like this in a damn
change unfortunately for me.
Now, that's just, I mean, I give it the open mind and everything for some reason for me
this didn't click.
And I sit next to you at the film.
You will laugh in all the way through.
I enjoyed it.
Yeah.
And you know, that's what we had.
That's why they have multiple critics to give multiple views.
And there's a lot of things we will disagree on and a lot of things we won't disagree
on.
But I just didn't find him funny of being a self-centered jerk.
Unfortunately.
But there was a couple good shunning moments of comedy though.
I gave that to him.
And the series relationship parts I thought was better than the comedy.
Fair enough.
And it's also, you know, also the great Bobby Moynihan from Saturday Night Live.
Yeah.
Huge fan.
And that was one of the few good moments too.
Him, Cole and Bobby together.
I thought that was a big, very well.
You know, it was one of these films where it was one of those kind of watching a guy
and kind of rooting for him.
But maybe not at the same time.
It's one of those films where you'll hear a song that you may never hear the same
again.
Yeah.
Don't want to mention any names.
I thought I had to say about that.
Yeah.
This song is an inside joke.
You have to see the movie.
And it just to me.
It's right on an hour and a half.
Yeah.
I thought the pacing was fine.
Overall for me it did.
It was fine for me too.
They didn't drag.
It didn't, you know, it wasn't too long.
Right.
And there wasn't anything that I felt.
I mean, there was a couple things that by the time the film ended, I was like,
maybe would have liked to scene a little bit more of this or that.
I think that maybe 10 minutes more, especially within the last act.
Yeah.
He could do a little bit more wrap up than they gave me.
But I, that doesn't take away from my enjoyment of the film.
I just kind of wanted a little something more.
Here's the gauge.
How many times did you look at your watching?
Couple three.
That's not bad.
And the first time I looked at my watch, we were almost halfway done.
Okay.
So again, the pacing was good.
It was good.
You know, I didn't get to a point where I was just like, okay, this thing has to move.
It moved nicely.
I won't say it was, you know, I would say we put the pedal to the pedal here.
But it moved nicely.
Yeah.
And I was okay with that.

So let's get to the final analysis before we do.

What we do is we ask two questions.
Question number one is, would you see this film again?

If the answer is yes, then it becomes, what would you do to see this film again?
Would you pay full price in an evening?
Would you go to a twilight?

Would you run it from red box?
Would you stream it from Netflix?
Would you wait it from cable?

Would you see this film again?
I am barely barely on the the smallest.
Yes possible before hit.
No.
Not one toe on the side.
Yes.
Just a barely.
Yes.
How so?
Because of the series relationship in some comedy that worked.
That's the only reason that I'm not giving it the big no.
Okay.
So what would you do see again?
If all my side shoppings done, all my chores are done.
I've seen the dentist.
Everything on my DVR's empty and Netflix is off and everything on TV is off except
this one channel shown this movie.
Fair enough.
Okay.
I would see this film again.
I think I do it as a red box rental.
So I would actually leave my house to go see this.
I don't know.
I mean, it's available on VOD now.
So it's not like you even have to leave the house to watch it.
Exactly.
I think it's it's a good.
It's a good film for people like of our age.
Because I think we want some of us have gotten to that point where we wish we could have
do over.
And in this case, Nick Cross character is forced to do over.
But I think there's someone that people of mid age can identify with in this film,
which I'm totally on board with.
