Welcome. My name is Rob. I am the executive producer of the Clubhouse podcast and you're probably going to hear a little how you doing coming up here as we talk about this next film.
Joining me across the desk is the official fact checker of this show.
And a man that likes things simple. As do we all.
You may know him as Fondango but as my name is Don Ford. I'm going to call him Don Ford. Welcome sir.
Sometimes I got that simple mind.

Whatever we do one of these it is to review something and this is no exception.
Now you may know Paul Feig the director from things like bridesmaids. Spy, the heat.
He gets a little darker this go around with a movie called A Simple Favor.
For what's that this whole thing? Yeah sir.
Julie and Josh from your band Slime Fox.
We love our vendors. They let us see movies early so that we get a chance to talk to you guys about them and give you our honest opinions.
So I'm just about to the point where I'm about to give back on the bike and ride.
Things are almost back to Abnoor. So I'm very excited.
So you went to this one. I wanted to go to this one but things didn't quite work out.
You've got Blake Lively, Mrs. Ryan Reynolds.
And you've also got Anna Kendrick. How you doing? How you doing?
And you've got some other people in this too. No names that really stick out to me so much.
Okay.
But she's what you need to know. Yeah.
Anna Kendrick plays Stephanie Smothers.
She is a widow and she's just trying to keep things moving. She's got a son.
Her son at school becomes friends with another young boy.
Yep.
And as their friendship happens to happen, Stephanie makes friends with the other boy's mother.
Emily Nelson played by the Blake Lively.
Uh huh.
And she's married to a guy that can we say probably not the nicest cat in the world?
Can we say that? No, I'd say Emily's not the nicest cast.
Is that what it is? She is. Okay.
Yeah.

You said that he was very, oh, I forgot that hold on.
I thought she was very.
Okay, but you said he was a little weird too.
Yeah, he was, but not.
He's like an author who had a one hit wonder when it comes to books and hasn't really had anything since.
And so she's kind of the breadwinner for the family.
He's living off the residuals waiting to ride again.
That kind of thing.
Ah, fair enough. Yeah.
And so actually, um, Andrews character Stephanie.
She's that smiley.
Does everything for the school?
Does things for the PTA?
She's a widow.
Living off the life insurance that kind of thing.
But it has a blog.
A mom's blog that people watch on like the YouTube channel.
That kind of thing and little household tips and stuff like that.
So they become friends.
Things are going well.
All of a sudden, Emily disappears.
Uh-huh.
Not sure what happens to her until we find out that she has shuffled off this mortal coil.
Via a little things we like to call shenanigans.
And so as this happens, Stephanie and the husband.
Sean.
Sean, they get a little cozy.
Yeah.
They get a little cozy.
But maybe Emily's not dead.
We don't know.
We don't know.
But there's little, little, little, little scared, jumpy things that kind of,
they try to do that jump.
So you start seeing things and you're like, wait a minute.
This might have to be what we think it is.
But then there's other things that are more evidentires,
the best way to be in spoiler free.
Okay.
Okay.
And then we go from there into the mystery of a series G.
Yes.
So Paul Fee, usually known for comedy.
Yeah.
Very funny, man.
Very funny, man.
I love that.
Great director.
Yeah.
But this, like I said in the opening, this is a little darker for him.
Yeah, it is.
Did his style translate for this for you?
Not really.
Really?
No, no.
I mean, there's really no comedy in this film at all.
Well, I mean, I didn't think that's his genre.
Right.
I mean, let's be honest, he's more of a comedic director.
I mean, bridesmaids is bridesmaids.
That's going to be one of those people will talk about for years.
But this is a totally different realm.
It's kind of like me who does wrestling talk, try to talk badminton,
top 10 players in the world.
It just doesn't work out.
We're not saying it's not possible, but it's not likely.
It's not likely.
Okay.
Fair enough.

Is this is very reminiscent of that gone girl film that came out with an app like, okay?
Is she gone?
That kind of thing.
Then she comes back later and then you can find out that she's an evil twisted lady.
Easy.
Easy.
Well, everybody.
Don't be too stupid.
Even though you only have like so many years to see it so far.
I'm just saying.
But that character and gone girl, the wife, she could be kind of a brash lady who'll tell you what she thinks
and pulls no punches.
And that's the same way that Emily is.
The friendship was kind of weird.
It's kind of like oil and vinegar with Sam, Stephanie's character and Emily,
that they're kind of opposites to kind of attract.
And it's kind of a fast friendship that grows.
But then when she disappears, gumboom.
But Emily, all the way through, is that conniving person who has that kind of twist double personality
where she could be cool.
She could be fun.
Let's get some martinis.
Let's have the girls thing out.
But she will ask you the brash questions.
Well, pull no punches and doesn't care if it's political or the character not.
But was that convincing for you in those performances?
Yeah.
And Kendrick, I mean, she is what she is.
Will this be her lifetime real remembrance film?
No.
I mean, stuff like up in the air will be more remembered.
Because she's got nominations for things.
Yeah, it's exactly.
And I see no nominations when it comes to the acting.
But I don't know.
That was the expectation.
Yeah.
But if you like her, it's part for the course.
It's part for the course for Golding.
It's with lively.
My shadow has to go to lively because she plays that part so well, the evil person.
And she could be vindictive.
And she could be real brash.
I was impressed with her role.
The rest of the acting, it was just there.
It's basically the three.
Golding, lively, and Kendrick with a few things by the two kids.
Henry Golding, playing Chop Townsend.
Besides that, the rest of the cast, you're talking maybe a couple minutes on air here or there.
I mean, on the film here or there.
So there really was no acting except for those big five, you could say.
Well, you mentioned those jump scares.
Yeah.
How was the storytelling here?
Storytelling, the movie, I think, moves pretty good.
It wasn't too long.
It didn't drag.
It didn't like, think, oh, get over, get over.
I mean, there wasn't a lot of words to chasing.
Yeah.
How can I cut it?
It's two hours.
Maybe ten minutes.
It could have been cut out.
But I mean, it had a good pace of the film.
It kept me interested overall.
The problem is, I think this film is Gone Girl Part 2 that fails.
It tried to be too much like that film.
I saw too much reminiscent.
It's just the names and the characters have changed.
Was it kind of that Hollywood saw something that worked?
Did you try to make another thing like it?
Yeah, exactly.
It's fair enough.
Just the names and the characters have changed to protect the innocence kind of thing.
That's a long time since I heard that phrase.
Yeah.
But it comes out to it.
That's what it is.
And it didn't par up because it's just like, this is just repackaged.
In the twist at the end, there was some things that were not answered.
They tried to answer it.
But it kind of, we both, like me and the Fantastic 34 went to saw this.
And we're asking, did they really answer that?
What really happened?
Did this person know?
Did this person not know kind of thing?
So there were some kind of questions left that I think they probably could have answered better in the film.
Okay.
The wrap up was, is what it is.
But it was kind of confusing on the payoff of, in maybe a little bit too complicated.
Gone Girl wasn't as complicated.
This one made it too complicated to try to redress it.
Okay.
Anything you want to talk about?
On this one here, if you like those kind of mysteries, if you did like Gone Girl, I think you may like this.
Of course, I'm not going to speak for everybody.
True.
But the people who like this kind of genre film, you might like it.
Give it a shot.
Maybe you may or may not.
You might be a little disappointed, but I don't think you're going to be.
Oh, this was one of those great mysteries that's going to kick up with Gone Girl and stuff like that.
I doubt it.
Okay.
Here I get the file analysis.
Yeah, let's do it.
The way you do the file analysis on this show, we're not going to give you thumbs up, thumbs down, letters, you know, numbers, martinis, anything like that.
I'm going to ask Don up the two questions.
Question number one is, would he see this film again?
If the answer is no, then we're done here.
But if the answer is yes, my follow up question is going to be, how far would he be willing to go to see it again?
From the best of the best or the worst of the best, here's how we do it.
Full price at a theater, down to a twilight showing, down to a matinee showing, down to early morning on a weekend,
down to going to the dollar theater for a second run viewing, down to actually leaving the house to get it from red box, down to streaming it on Netflix, down to watching it on cable.
Don, would you see a simple favor again?
Yeah, I would.
Oh, hold on.

How far you want to go to do it?
I would recommend it as a red box rental.
That's the thing.
It's kind of there.
Yeah, if you see it on the thing, I wouldn't say go to the, it definitely will get the coveted, but when it comes out, you see it on the red box.
