I'm just kind of getting into the song a little bit.
Joining me across the desk is he tends to do is my co-host.
And a man who just celebrated his anniversary.
Less than a month ago.
He is Chad Welcome.
So I did indeed.
See there was an age joke there.
I was waiting for your welcome.
I was witnessing and waiting for that.
Also joining us for this particular edition is the official fact checker of this show.
And a man who will do a little dancing on you at an anniversary party if you let him.
You may know him as Fondongo, but his mom and me and Dom Ford.
I'm going to call him Dom Ford.

That's a mom and me.
And this is the special thing.
This is the 179th one of these.
Wow.
So our next step.
Our next exclusive will be a nice even number for us.

I'm going to be 45 in October.
Oh really?
Yeah.
I will not.
So.
Whatever we do one of these it is to review something.
This is no exception today.
We are reviewing the latest film the claimed film from director Andrew Hague.
I hope I'm saying that right.
H.A. I. G. H.
With Charlotte rambling and Tom Courtney.
It is called 45 years.
And if you have been paying attention during the award season.
This thing has nabbed a lot of awards.
A lot.
And film festivals around the world.
Charlotte rambling is nominated for best actress.
At the Academy Awards.
I think that's the only nomination has got it.
I believe so.
Yes.
Before we start this whole thing.
Yes, sir.
This is going to be kind of different on the thinking.
First of all, we're always going to think allied in Josh and everybody from absolutely.
Absolutely.
But we have basically think artificial light because we actually got this in the mail.
We have the screen.
We are a big market big time.
We received screener copies of this to watch as all three of us did.
Yeah.
Thank you so much for that, guys.
We really really appreciate that.
It gives us the opportunity to really kind of get our hands dirty.
And still to be able to send us to Josh and think.
Anyway, I was going to think of best friends.
Yeah, of course.
Well, I was going to think allied in the greater marketing.
They hosted a screening of this and they said,
Hey, we like you guys to still review it.
If you don't, if you don't mind, we said absolutely.
Not a problem.
Here's what you need to know if you haven't seen the film.
Kate and Jeff Mercer.
All right, couple.
And what the title refers to is they're getting ready to celebrate their 45th wedding anniversary.
They couldn't do their 40 if they did some health issues.
So they decided we're going to do our 45th because that's how we roll.
Shortly before this happens, Jeff gets a telegram in the mail.
Who sends those anymore?
No kidding.
From from Switzerland.
People in Switzerland was stating that the body of his old girls.
His old girlfriend before he met his current wife was found in case in ice in a mountain after she fell into a crevice in the Alps.
What follows for about the next hour and a half is how they both deal with this news on the eve of their anniversary party.
This is based on a short story by David Constantine, called in another country.
I'm always intrigued when people can take short films or short stories and turn them into feature-length films because you have a lot of ground to cover.
Your average short story would probably make what we figured you had five ten minutes of a film.
So you kind of have to expand this a little bit.
I'm going to say ahead of time because I've read both of your reviews, which are featured at www.theclubhousepodcast.com, which is our website.
This ought to get real interesting because we have some very differing views on this film.
And I'm going to start with you.
There's not really much we can talk about from a visual aspect because there's a nice shot at the country side.
But the way he shot this film was there anything that stood out to you at all?
Not really in which I put my review at theclubhousepodcast.com at his our website.
Whether you do the www or not, I don't want to get you there.
These days you don't have to put that in.
Yeah, no, that's what I'm saying.
I'm making it simple for the empire.
Fair enough.
But I put it on there.
It's a simplistic look.
It's had some great nature shots, but that's all that needed.
It did not need anything special.
No CGI.
This just showed England and its beauty, basically.
I've seen this refer to as a chamber piece that a lot of it just kind of takes place in the same room.
The vast majority.
Which for me, this could really easily be done as a 1x stage product.
That's kind of the way I was picturing it in my hand.
I'm like, you know, a lot of the scenes that might have been taking place outside
for mainly just scenes where they were driving and cars and stuff.
And that can be, you know, interpreted pretty well on stage without using any exteriors.
But it was fairly straightforward.
There weren't a lot of bells and whistles to it.
It was just performance.
And for me, that's, I'm the same way.
I thought it was shot well for what it was.
Totally.
Okay.
Very appropriate.
It's a sense.
But you have to rely on performance here.
I didn't have any problem with the screen writing itself.
I felt it was serviceable.
Like, I wasn't wowed to the point of like, I lost myself in performance.
But performance here.
I found this a very interesting character sketch as a character study.
Yeah.
Because, you know what, I'm even going to hold off on my opinion because I want,
I want you guys to voice yours first because I know,
but this is where things are going to get differed.
And I really want you guys to be able to get your opinions on there and chatable start with you.
Let's talk about performance.
Ramping and Courtney specifically because everybody else is kind of an ancillary character.
Right.
It was, it was a, it's kind of hard to, to sum this up simplistically.
Because you see two people that are dealing with an issue where the house is clearly divided on this.
Mm-hmm.
Where he feels one way because of, of, of,
Extinguating circumstances because of Verna because of the history involved.
And there are some things that you really can't go into if you're trying to,
or if you're trying to keep spoilers out of this.
Um, but, uh,
watching him,
trying to deal with this,
was, it kind of hit home from me because I've dealt with something like this many,
many, many, many years ago.
Back at a completely different point in your life than these two are.
Right. Oh, yeah.
I was in grade school when I lost a girlfriend.
Mm-hmm.
And, and I can only imagine what it would feel like.
I hate to imagine what it would feel like.
Right.
To get a letter like that saying,
By the way, we found her all these years later.
Being in a relationship with somebody else and trying to cope with the memories of how you felt about this person.
And basically reopening a wound that you never dreamed would ever reopen.
Fair enough.
And having to go through the grieving process all over again.
And I think that he sold it extremely well of just watching a man who is in the twilight of his life.
And you kind of get the impression that he was starting to diminish a little bit.
Yeah.
So that maybe he was the onset of dementia was beginning.
Fair enough.
But he's coping with it in the only way he really knows how.
And that's kind of getting introspective about it.
And watching her being somewhat supportive of it at first.
And then eventually just not being able to deal with it.
Okay.
It's almost like she becomes jealous of this ghost of a girlfriend that she's never met.
Never would meet.
And she becomes almost bitter and resentful about it.
And you and I talked about this off air about how this is something that maybe you wouldn't feel comfortable bringing up with your spouse.
Because of the situation.
And we'll get to that here in a minute for sure.
And I feel like that I was kind of given the impression that they were all they really had for the past half century.
And maybe he felt like he could talk to her about anything.
And maybe he was a little bit more than just slightly ambushed and shocked and stunned by how she reacted to it.
Okay.
And it was to me it was even more heartbreaking knowing that he was pretty much on his own.
That he was going to have to deal with this completely on his own.
Because she just couldn't get past the emotional rage that she was feeling inside for this specter of his past.
From a performance standpoint, do you think that was conveyed well enough?
Yes, absolutely.
I mean, you know, I wanted to throw something at Charlotte ramping.
I was just like, she comes across as very, very caring, but then very, very cold.
And then on that note, let's go to Don when we talk about performance because I know Don's got some very strong opinions as well.
The performance I think they both did incredible.
I mean, Charlotte, you just start to hate her.
But you like her, but you could understand, but she's a real-class person.
And I'm not blaming her as she did the role perfectly.
That's what the role is.
I'm with you.
Yeah.
So I thought they acting was spot on and I agree what Chad was saying about the emotions.
I agree with him 100% of what he just said.
Now, here's the thing about the movie, though.
This is my big thing.
You said it came from a short story.
I did call it in another country.
It should have been made a short movie.
Okay.
This thing could have been put into 30 to 45 minutes.
This film, which I put in my written review at clubhouse.com.
That is our website.
If you haven't saw me, watch this movie.
You'll be cured.
And I completely disagree with you.
Oh, no.
Because, no, again, respect your opinion, your opinion is yours.
Yes.
But for me, I won't say I was riveted by this film, but I was fascinated by this film.
Because I kind of saw this through different lenses than you guys did.
For me, again, Chad, you talked about them
and had only having each other.
I live in a similar situation.
Jen and I have been together for, you know, almost,
there'll be 17 years this fall.
We have no children.
If you don't count, you know, the fur balls.
Yeah.
To listen PBA out there.
That's not their real names.
But if something like this happened to me, I mean granted,
I know that I can talk to my wife about anything.
My wife is an amazing individual who was incredibly caring
and willing to listen to me Babylon incessantly.
But I think in a situation like this, there is a certain point
that I'm not even going to say a woman, a spouse gets to.
Where you kind of go, I know you're grieving
and I get it, but I need you to do me a favor
and we have to draw a line here because, honestly,
I'm starting to feel like you're feeling for this person
more than you're feeling for me.
And something that you and I talked about off air, Chad,
where I said, you do, that's why I have you.
Yeah.
If my wife ever says to me, I really don't want to hear about this anymore.
Like it's starting to affect me.
I will draw the line at that point
and if I still need to get something off my chest,
I'm going to call you or I'm going to call someone of your ilk.
And I'm going to say, dude, I just got to get this out of my system.
It's freaking me out.
And I think what you saw in Rampling's portrayal
is a woman that didn't quite know how to convey that to her husband
with that because she even tried a couple of times.
And he starts cutting her out.
So she now is having to deal with these
welling up feelings of jealousy that she can't get rid of
because she can't, she feels she can't talk to him about it
without him going off the handle.
So now she has to take the brunt of it,
which I thought was brilliant.
Now, here's the conundrum.
I thought her both of them had amazing performance.
I agree 100%.
However, I'm not sure I'm willing to put a Academy Award
nominee next to either one of the absolutely.
In a shallower field, maybe.
But we've talked about this multiple episodes
in the last 20 or 30.
This field for the Academy Awards is so deep
that I would shutter to think,
there's at least one other performance for best actress out there
that was overlooked for this one.
Again, amazing performances by both of them.
But not worth the nod.
I'm not sure.
In Rob World, if I had about a ballot and a Academy,
I am available.
Me too.
That I would put her in this category.
You know, as members of the North Texas Film Critics Association,
she, I don't believe was even on my radar.
I don't think so.
Now, one thing I want to get back on was,
here's the point.
All the emotions, everything in the film.
We just talked about in the last 15, 20 minutes.
Correct.
You know what? That's all it needed.
This was extended out for over an hour or 45 minutes.
No, I've absolutely see.
This is right in an hour and 35.
This could've been, no, no, no, no, no.
You're right.
I see where you're going.
And one thing I want to add.
This thing, when I looked at this,
this is made for the generation of the baby boomers
or older.
And it's also made for people who are students of film.
Yeah, I could say that.
But this thing when I watched it,
this was made instead of being a short to a long film,
because they wanted to make this thing an Oscar bait.
This had that foothoo style.
Sometimes a cat made just loves.
I will eat up and there it's guess what they got to nod.
Totally not going to debate that.
God, and that's the thing of bug me.
This would've been a perfect film.
It was a short of three to 45 minutes.
Because they're all the emotions.
Everything we just talked about.
It's done.
And if you did it as a,
I guess you would call that a long form short.
Yeah.
Don't, don't they have like a 10 minute and a 30 minute chat?
Yeah, I believe so.
Yeah, like the 30 minute.
Still probably would've gotten nominated.
Totally.
And probably would've gotten nominated for best short.
Yeah.
So, and I see where you're going.
I agree with that to an extent.
But for me,
I was, I was with it the whole way through.
And I was just, this is.
Yes.
That's what I said for you.
I knew it was going to be different.
I knew they were going to be differing.
They saw what they wanted to do.
I saw the motions.
But they just spread it out way too.
This is not the cargo in 20 miles per hour and a 35 zone.
This is a cargo in five miles an hour.
And without any wheels on the axles going down.
And let's, let's put this out there, too.
Not a family film.
No.
There are severely mature situations and mature topics that are dealt with here.
That that was painful to watch.
I know what you're referring to.
Yeah.
There's a couple of moments that I was kind of like,
Oh, hi.
You could have done without that.
So is there anything else we want to add before we get to the final analysis?
To clarify, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I,
I, I, I, I, I, I thought that this was a bad film.
It's just one that I was glad it was over with when it was over with.
It's kind of like, and this is going to sound weird to some people.
It's kind of like how I felt after good will hunting.
I love good will hunting.
So do I.
But there are certain aspects of that film that hit me in a weird place.
Yeah.
I can't sit through that film again because of some of the subject matter.
I can't say that I wouldn't sit through 45 years again,
but I wouldn't rush to do so, right?
I think one thing this film was not made for the masses.
This is the made for a certain part.
It's an art film.
Yeah, an art film that was made for the Academy.
All right.
Shall we get to the final analysis?
Yes.
Let's do.
The way we do the final analysis on this particular show.
We don't give you thumbs up thumbs down.
We don't give you ratings.
We don't give you rankings.
We don't give you letter grades.
Our audience whom we affectionately refer to as the empire.
We feel they want us to go a little bit deeper.
So we're going to do that.
I'm going to ask two questions.
Question number one, is would you see this film again?
If the answer is no, then we're done here.
But if the answer is yes, I want to know how far you're willing to go to see it.
Are you going to go see it in full price for the first run?
You're going to go to a twilight show.
You're going to go to a matinee.
You're going to go early morning on the weekend.
You're going to see it in second run at the dollar theater.
You're going to venture out of the house to go get it from red box.
You're going to stream it on Netflix.
You're going to watch it on cable.
Done.
Would you see this film again?
Due to it was so boring for the first time this year.
No.
Not recommending it.
The big no.
And let's say this.
He says for the first time this year.
It's January.
I know, but that's the start.
This is my first no the year.
And also for me, I'm not going to put this on my list of films for this year because
it was released last year.
I know.
Chad, would you see this one again?
I can't see myself watching this more than once.
I don't this is weird for me because I don't know that I can answer that question.
Like, I wouldn't go out of my way.
But if I was with somebody and they were like,
Hey, man, I kind of want to check this out.
I've been wanting to watch this for a while.
I'll fire my laptop.
And I had and I had no escape.
I would say, sure.
I'll watch it with you.
You know, make sure you're in it.

If you are with your spouse to watch this film,
and you have had any way shape or form of an argument in the previous 48 hours,
don't watch this film.
Not going to improve.
Yeah.
I'm not going to help.
And I'm going to say this.
I have this on DVD like the rest of us do.
I will not watch this again.
I will never film my DVD.

Yeah.
