Hello everyone.
Rounding out the days is the official fact checker of this show and a man who was once asked
if he's well read and he said, I really don't wear that color, it doesn't look good
on me.
You may know him as Igboonoo but his mom and even Don Ford, I'm going to call him Don Ford,
what's up brother.
I usually do those disc things because the reading, those disc things, yeah, yeah.
So I shouldn't mention that I read 138 books so far this year, don't you want me to take
me to catch up on that, those disc things, yeah, those CD discs to where you hear it instead
of reading.

Yeah, the ones I guess and see, meeting, I see spot run, I'm still trying to get past
that on my page three, you started it, whatever we do one of these is to review something
and this is no exception.
A movie that's a little bit polarizing in the geek community as Dome Karukoski, he's
finished but he's not finished.
This is very first English speaking film and it is the biopic known as Tolkien.
Ford's not solving.
Yeah, sir, you should first off give yourself a rim shot for that.

This was one of those very small affairs.
This was a press only screening, we couldn't even have plus ones for this.
So if you don't know who J.R.R. Tolkien is, first of all, welcome back from the cave.
He is the author of the Lord of the Rings books amongst many other things, probably one
of the most well known sci-fi fantasy authors in the history of ever.
He did the Hobbit too, right?
The Hobbit is part of the Lord of the Rings, yes, that's the beginnings of the Lord of
the Rings.
So going into this thing, it was very strange for me because before my screening, this
thing was at 18% on Rotten Tomatoes.
People were going insane about this film.
Not in a good way.
I remember hearing you talk about it on the last show right on the vocal noun network.
Correct, we are very proud to be a part of it.
Jackson's apparently decided to play with everything on Dad's desk right now, son, just chill
out.
Yeah, he just turned one yesterday, there's no way that's going to happen.
Happy birthday.
Yes, he's very, very happy to be one, he at least he thinks so.
And there's something else for him to play on a goofess cat.
I did not watch a trailer or anything going into this.
I made the conscious choice because a lot of people were saying what the trailer does
is not what's indicative of the film and it brings the film down.
Okay.
I literally watched the trailer earlier the day we recorded this as I was writing my
written review, currently located at www.theclubassfodgast.com.

I'm sorry, I'm watching this cat, and he's just fascinated by a wire on my desk.
Son, don't you can't chew, don't chew on that.
Good mercy.
It's the joy of being a verbal father.
So this really does tell his life story.
Okay.
He was the older of two brothers.
They were orphaned at a very young age.
They were guardian to the church under a priest, couldn't say that.
Played by the great comini, thank you very much.
So the priest was his guardian, that's what you said, okay, okay.
So they moved him into a foster home.
And he looked out for his little brother, but it was kind of in a in a ritier part of
town than they were used to living in.
So there's that adjustment to it, going to a private school on a scholarship.
But he ends up meeting up with three other boys and they formed this society.
And then it, but there's also, sure, why not, Jackson?
He literally just dumped an entire bag of pens all over my desk.
I just go to the batteries.
My young son has hijacked this episode, which I know Marock is excited about.
Hello here, and we talk about them.
But there's also a lot of time jumping here, because a lot of people don't know this.
He served in World War One in the British Army, okay.
All four of them did, but only two of them went into the same branch.
So there's a lot of him looking for his friend on the battlefront, flashing back to when
they were younger.
And it goes all the way up through their college years until they go to the war.
And then it deals with the aftermath and all of that.
Each one of them had a different gift in the arts.
One was a poet, one was a composer, one was a painter, and then talking was the writer.
And J.R.R. he has four names.
I don't know what people were expecting out of this film.
I really, really don't, because even when I watched the trailer, it made it, people made
it seem like there's more of, oh, this was in the Lord of the Rings, and this was in
the Lord of the Rings.
And there are references to it.
There are certain times where he sees things in the mist that make it look like something.
And the scene at the end of the trailer, that's all of that scene.
A lot of people thought that would be a bigger player, and it didn't really have to be.
Here's my thing with this film.
And I think this is where it falls apart from us.
By the way, J.R.R.O. took and played by Nicholas Holt, who you might know as beast in the
New X-Men films.
And then you've got, I mean, like I said, you've got Colemanian, this thing, Lily Collins,
is also in Sheephase, Edith Bratt, where I think this film falls apart from us people.
Is it doesn't know what it wants to be?
Because it's like, oh, now we're being saved in private Ryan.
Oh, now we're being the notebook.
Oh, now we're being dead poet society.
But at the same time, it's kind of the only way to tell this story.
And it's, and I said this in my written review, and I've already covered where we're, where
that's at.
There are moments of this film where it almost dares you to call it pretentious.
It's very strange.
What do you mean pretentious?
Or it's just like, it dares you to think it's above you.
But it's also Britain, so it's kind of that way anyway.
But I haven't decided if I enjoyed this film or not.
Like, it's, it's it's solid two hours.
Was it too long?
I can't answer that.
See, that's the weird thing about this film is, could it have been shorter, probably
a little bit, would it have made the film better?
Probably not.
Do you think your knowledge of the books he's known for affected your opinion, any?
No.
Because first of all, I haven't read those books since I was knee high to a grasshopper.
Secondly, I really knowing, going in, knowing how it had been pan so hard.
Now right now, it's right up to about 50% when we record this.
So there are people that are seeing it for what it is.
For me, I just looked at this as a biopic because that's what it is.
Question.
I mean, this is a good, you ever heard this in a while?
Watchkage.
20 minutes?
Not good.
And it's just because the story takes so long to unfold.
Like, you know where it's going to end.
He's an author.
But getting there is the thing.
And the time jumping gets a little bit discombobulating at first because we start in the war and
then we go back to when he was a kid.
Now, here's my issue and I watched the trailer and maybe he could help me out on this.
Sure.
I'll try without doing spoilers.
Yeah.
That's fine.
In the trailer, there are a couple sci-fi scenes.
Correct.
Okay.
Shows that kind of magical, talk anything.
Now, it took up a good part of the trailer.
Let's say maybe 20% of the trailer.
And I think that's where people are tripping up on it because it's a very small part
of the film.
Yeah.
Like that magical sci-fi stuff.
How much of the film is it?
Would you say 5%?
At most.
You see most of it in the trailer.
Yeah, that's the thing.
Now, but most.
And that's what's a little misleading, I think.
But what people have to understand is those scenes, most of those scenes, he's hallucinating.
Because when he's on the battle front, he's already fighting a major fever.
So what he sees as one thing is not necessarily not there.
It's just not in the form that he sees it in.
But I mean, I could tell he got certain influences from this and from this and from this.
But this is a guy that you have to remember, he invented entire languages for Lord of
Rings that didn't exist before.
And they do kind of tell that story of how you get to that point, kind of sort of.
I can't say this is a bad film.
Do you think maybe he was trying to hit too many points in, sorry, the director hitting
too many points in J.R.R.
I don't know.
See, that's the thing.
There's certain things because there was so much information.
Not really.
There's certain things I would have liked them to go a little bit deeper on, but again,
it, if they did, I don't know that I would have enjoyed the film anymore.
It's how was acting though.
I mean, it was totally comments great.
Okay.
I mean, I was sold, I was engaged the whole time, but by the same token, I needed
the storylines to catch up to it.
That wasn't on purpose, but I'll take it.
Again, it didn't take me out of it, but it wouldn't have made the movie better.
That's the way how they did what did you are, were you satisfied with the ending?
That's how they end it.
Yeah, because they do the bit at the end.
I will tell you there is a scene in the trailer that is altered digitally, which because
if you saw it in the form that it is in the film, it would spoil something for you.
Okay.
Because I saw it and I was like, I see what you did there.
It's a really good job at digitizing.
If you didn't know, you wouldn't know, which I thought was impressive, but this is definitely
not going to be the worst film I see this year.
We don't want to mention any names of the aftermath, but will it be in my top 10, probably
not.
I don't think it is right now, honestly.
This is just one of those films.
It's Fox Search Lite, so it's that indie film feel.
I don't want to use the term I used earlier this year of very British or Erbex was last
year because these are the first home shows we're doing of 2019, technically, but I don't
want that two hours back.
I can put it to you that way, but I can't tell you that I was just like, and you're not
running to see it again this weekend, right?
Oh, I have to get to that when it's the final analysis.
Oh, I'm not going to jump the cart here.
Yeah.
Or jump to put the cart and the cart and the horse thing.
Put the cart before the horse.
Let's just get there.
The way we do the final analysis on the show, not going to give you thumbs up, thumbs down,
letter grades, numbers, bell rogues, anything like that.
Two questions.
Question number one is, would I see this film again?
If the answer's no, we're done here.
If the answer's yes, the follow up question is, how far would I be willing to go to see
it from best to worst here we go?
Full price at the theater, matinee down to a, I'm sorry, twilight down to a matinee.
It's been a while since we did this.
Down to early morning on a weekend, down to second one at the dollar theater, down to actually
leaving my domicile to get it from red box, down to streaming it, down to cable.
Rob, yes, are inquiring minds want to know?
They always do.
Would you see this film again?
You know what?
I'm going to say I would.
How far are you willing to go?
That is the question.
I am going to say, I would wait for it on cable.
It's a really well done.
I just don't know that this film deserves the cinematic experience.
So it's one of those that if it was on, you wouldn't change the channel.
I might stop that.
I know that I commit to the whole thing, but I might stop down for a minute.
I mean, would you seek it out to see parts of it or just if it was on, it was on?
If the lovely and talented Mrs. Irvin said she wanted to watch it and she wanted to
watch it with me, I would watch it with her.
How would you recommend it to the main goal or though?
Stream it, stream it, okay, stream it at best.
Okay.
It's a thing.
It is the first English speaking film from a director whose name I know I'm going to
screw up again in Dome Karukoski.
It is called a talking for this whole thing.
