Welcome. My name is Rob. I'm the executive producer of the Clubhouse podcast. And I love
But I'm not alone for this episode. Joining me across the desk is the official fact checker of
this show. And a man that knows a little something about the Pacific Northwest and Big Sky country.
You may know him as fond don't go, but as a mom and even Don Ford, I'm gonna call him Don Ford.
Welcome sir. Did you know us? Group in Montana.
You are correct. Did you know that? I did. You've mentioned it a couple of times.
In the last six years you've been on the show. Whatever we do one of these, it is to review something
and this is no exception. French director Jacques Odéla is here with it. This is first American
film, correct? I can't confirm or deny. I will double check that. It is called The Sisters Brothers.
And why are you looking that up? Yes sir. I'm gonna thank Julian and Josh here,
Fox for the invite. This is one of our favorite things to do. And the only way we get to do it
correctly is if we get to hang out because of our vendors. Yeah. They let us see movies and stuff
ahead of time so we can talk to you guys about them. And so the empire could spend their
entertainment dollar most wisely. Not his first film. At least not from an English standpoint.
Well, he had a profit a few years ago. But this is still a bit of a departure for you.
Because this takes place during the gold rush in the mid-1800s.
And you have the, literally Eli and Charlie Sisters. They are brothers whose last name is
Sisters, played by John C. Riley and Joaquin Phoenix. They work for the Commodore,
played by the great Rucker Hauer. Yeah. And he sends them after a guy by the name of Herman
Warm. Say that five times fast. That, that, that, that, that, that. Play by Riz Ahmed, whose heat they
believe has stolen plans that will make finding gold easier. Yes. And all while this is all going on,
you got little double agent thing going on with John Morris, played by the great Jake Gyllenhaal,
who's trying to help set this guy up so they can bring him in. Did I cover it pretty well for you?
Yeah. Basically the Commodore does a double thing and tells Gyllenhaal, but friend him and then
when the Sisters Brothers comes in, take him out. Get the information. I want that stuff back.
So this is right at two hours. Yeah. You saw this. I didn't. We were, we had a divide and conquer
during this screening because I'm very intrigued by this film. Yes. So tell me what you thought.
The weird part is I was watching this film and I was saying the scenery is beautiful.
They remind me back home. You saw the planes there were scenes in the mountains because
in some of that Gold Rush country. Oh, you saw the planes. I didn't see the plane. Yeah.
The plane. The plane. Not that plane. Okay. Yeah. I had it. Okay. But there's the mountain scenes,
even in the Gold Rush in California, they had those mountain areas where they were doing the
getting the gold out of the rivers and the streams and all that stuff. And I was wondering where
they filmed the stat because it reminded me so much of that area. And I've come out to find that
they filmed it in Spain of all places. Spain. I love Spain. I went there when I was 16.
Yeah. I mean, I love to see it. But I would not think one of the few places in the world. I
think they filmed this was Spain. But I can understand the coastline scene and when they hit the
coast, you know, it hits San Francisco. But beautifully shot the outside nature scenes were
incredible. And then some of these towns where they have these little, they stop at different
cities on the way to San Francisco to get up with the meetup with the Mr. Warm. Okay.
I thought they filmed these in some of these old west towns or ghost towns or something.
It's amazing what you can find out. Yeah. I mean, probably got them a little bit of text break
because he's already a European guy anyway. Yeah. So beautifully shot film. The cinematography style
was was really good. Time period correct because they hit San Francisco. There's only a couple
scenes in San Francisco. But it reminded me of the big boom of the time in the 1850s when,
because, you know, 49 was when the goal was found. But you had to rush for the next few years.
And it really showed San Francisco well these old western cities well. But it's filmed in Spain
which really, really surprised me. So I gotta give it to the guy. Okay. What's incredible?
Filming style, fit the mood of the film. Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful.
Acting. Yes, there's a cast. And for instance, you talked about him. Mr. Howard.
Be the great rucker. Howard, thank you very much.
Actions are for the easy to reach a movie called Blind Justice. Remember on a Star's Born
and you said Dave Sipel's is this film as long as it took me to say the sentence. I did say that.
Well, same thing with this. But yeah, he's, huh. In fact, he doesn't even talk.
Real. You don't hear him talk once. You see him once at the beginning where you see him talking
with the brothers behind a window in a few seconds there, then at the end of the film. That's it.
Wow. Okay. Yeah. If you go to my room view at www.clubhouseblogcast.com,
that's our website. I put that 90% of the acting are the four leads.
Okay. The supporting cast is when they say small supporting cast, I mean small supporting cast.
The supporting cast that has the most lines in the film besides the lead four is Rebecca
Roots character of Mayfield. And she probably only has about five minutes of screen time and probably
about four or five scenes where she speaks more than two or three sentences. So the acting,
90% of the acting is just those four. Literally, I'm not kidding you because they're on
they're on the road. They're in this, in this, on the trails going through the mountain passes.
So the acting is those four, which really surprised me how those four did the whole film in the
acting wise. Um, playing a simple walking Phoenix. I don't think he was acting. And that's
a compliment for him because I think they just put him some Western clothes and just be yourself
is what they did. And because he plays the brother who John C. Raleigh is the more the calm
demeaning thinking man, walking Phoenix is the older brother kind of the leader, but he has the
drinking and the girls and sometimes he's not the smartest rock on the in the box there. Okay.
So acting wise, walking Phoenix kind of plays a guy with a couple, you know, two, three cans
short of a six pack. And knowing everything we see in a him in real life, I think he just played
himself, but that's a good compliment. It's kind of cookie. Yeah, that's what I'm saying. He plays
the cookie guy very well. Riley, here's my problem with him, which I even told you last night,
the screening was still last night is with these films like Talgate and Knights and uh,
step brothers and stuff like that. That's right. Yeah. The problem with him is he, people may think
of him that comedy role, even though he's done some serious stuff. I mean, Chicago, he was in the
games in New York. He's done some real serious roles, but I think that comedy thing may put a shadow
in him trying to do a serious role now, but still he plays that role fine. Um, Jim Hall.
Jim Hall. Jim Hall. The great Jake, Jim Hall.
So I'll say it's just Jim Hall. And I've heard that he has, he also is kind of a small role in this.
No, he's one of the big. Because because Cynthia Jordan, in front of her, she was like, I thought
he would be in it more than he was, but like I said, that it's just, yes, more of the brothers,
but it's four characters when it comes down to it. It's around the brothers most of the time,
but there are a lot of scenes where all four interact. Um, a Meg does great for the role he has to.
Now next year, can I see one of these get a nomination for Best Lead or Supporting Actor? Yeah.
I think there might be that talk when it comes to acting on one of these four, if not two.
Jim Hall plays that role manored English proper gentleman, but he hasn't, he could be a dark side guy
and do it very smoothly. So that's what he does. Yeah. Do you remember Nightcrawler?
He talks and that if he was a English professor talking at a, at a, uh, when those readings
or something like that, that's the way he really does this character of a real proper gentleman.
But he has that side where he's working for the Commodore for a reason. And that's probably why.
He could, he could, he could turn around and shoot you, but be Mr. Gentlemen the whole time.
Okay. So acting, yeah, there might be some nominations next year.
Now here's my problem. All right. Yes, it's a western. I even told you this last night that
it's a slow moving western kind of like the unforgiven. Now not all westerns are slow,
like I even put them in the magnificent seven. That's a fast moving western. There's a lot of fast
moves. That's also into on Fuqua. Yeah, but you get the point where this is like the unforgiving where
it's a long movie, it's slow, but it has some action. Not saying it's a bad thing. I just thought it
was a little too slow for what it was. Like unforgiven, basically there's only two gunfight scenes in
a whole two hour movie when you think about it. Still a great film. Yeah, great film. But
this is a great film too, but I just thought the pace was a little slow and they shouldn't
have done more on the goal thing. Okay. Now just to warn you, this film is
has scenes that are are very brutal and realistic. Okay. You go to the 1850s and stuff like that.
You get to California. Hi, I'm here. I want to find some gold. You don't think there's people
out there that will conny or stab you in the back. You know, people think of the fantasy of
being back in the gold rush in California and the old west, but you got out there. There
are people who are praying on people out there. Oh, absolutely. Yeah. So I mean, it kind of shows
this dark side of this of the Hitman, but there are some scenes where the nature and the brutality
of nature and gold mining is forefront and it pulls no punches. There's some scenes where
me and they've looked at each other and it's like, please don't show this. Oh, and then they did.
Yeah. It pulled no punches. There are some very brutal, graphic scenes in this film,
but it's realistic brutality, which for the situations was real. But it's just a point where
there was one scene with Port Riley and he's I'm going to say is he's sleeping. That's all I'm
saying. And when it hits you'll know, but it was just, oh, don't do. Oh, and you heard the whole
crowd just go, oh, so I mean, be warned. If you take the kids, you might have a little bit explaining
to do there enough. Yeah. But this is ready. Yeah. This is hard for the reason like you like to say,
but still, I think I enjoyed it. Basically, you want a good western like them forgiven. I think
this being your cue and watch out for the acting. Okay. Yeah. All right. You want to get to
filing out? Yeah. Let's do the final analysis on the show. We're not going to give you thumbs up,
thumbs down. We're not going to give you let it grades numbers, nuggets, anything like that. I'm
going to ask Donald to two questions. Question number one of what he see this again. If the answers
know, then we're done here. But if the answer is yes, then the follow up question is going to be how far
is he willing to go to do so from the best of the best of the worst of the best. Here's how it goes.
Full price to the theater down to a twilight showing down to a matinee down to early morning on a
weekend down to actually him leaving his down to second rights to our theater. Then him leaving
his red house to get it from red box down the streaming on Netflix down to cable. Don, would you
see the sister brothers again? Oh, definite. How far you want to go to do so? The only problem I
had was the pace and stuff, but beyond that very, very, very, very good film, Oscar buzz twilight.
All right. Almost almost the coveted, but not quite. I can't. I can't just slow this. That's fair.
That's fair. Everything else I really enjoyed. It is Jacques Aldelard. Oh,
has he directs the sister's brothers? Yes, sir. I think we'd thank Julian Josh here by
