Home Show The Addams Family 2019
Rob and Alex review the 2019 animated Addams Family film, praising its voice cast including Oscar Isaac as Gomez, Charlize Theron as Morticia, and Chloe Grace Moretz as Wednesday. The story follows the family's arrival in a town called Assimilation where a home improvement guru threatens to either remodel their house or take drastic measures, all while the extended family gathers for Pugsley's rite of passage ceremony. the vocal now app check out all the great shows right here on the vocal now network because it's time for a another home show number 489 for those of you playing the home game my name is Rob I am the executive producer of the clubhouse podcast and I've been called creepy kooky and oaky just how I get down I'm not alone for this particular episode joining me in the co host chair is my co host and a man who might be shocked to find out some of the voice casting in this particular film we're about to review he is Alex welcome sir well I don't want to burst your bubble but the voice casting might be the one thing I know about this movie other than the basic content so you did say you've been called oaky but have you been called all together spooky I will not confirm or deny well Halloween is coming up that is true whatever we do one of these it is to review something and this is no exception for the first time since they were created as a comic in the New Yorker magazine eighty some odd years ago I actually know the date on this nineteen thirty eight yes sir so just over eighty years ago yes the Adams family goes back to its animated roots but is on the big screen and we want to thank our friends at marock for inviting us out Julie in the crew by this out awesome we love our vendors they let us see movies and stuff beforehand so we can talk to you guys about them and you can make your best decisions for your entertainment dollars so here's what you need to know first of all all star voice cast let's just say and that may be underselling it because you think the Adams family especially of my generation probably yours I would say oh very familiar yes we would go down grades and I watched the the black and white film when I was a black and white series when I was a kid but you go to the movies you think Raul Julia oh absolutely wanted it wanted a grace of all time absolutely how do you follow his Gomez Adams that's a tough one because it's one of those were especially from my generation you think Gomez Adams and the immediate mental image you have is Raul Julia to the point of seeing him and everything else going oh street fighter starring Gomez Adams okay but you get Oscar Isaacs I want to take a second Isaac Isaac I just won I see and peeled it yeah but the other thing looking at this cast without going into specific people there's one thing to get a lot of all star names into a cast but with the history that these characters have and the people that they brought into those roles that casting director was working overtime well and then you've got Morticia mm-hmm paid by it was in jokie Houston I believe in in the prime iteration yes this is surely the wrong who is also fantastic who she and Oscar did none of their dialogue in the same room they didn't meet until the press tour that sounds weird to me but when you realize that it's pretty dog on impressive yeah you've got Chloe Grace Moritz playing Wednesday who I that's the one that really nailed it for me because having seen her for so long in other movies where she had that like almost like a creepy voice to herself fitting that character did you notice anything about her character the way she's animated no I have avoided most trailers on this one because I'm actually pretty excited unfortunately I was not able to attend the screening but I am feeling very bad it doesn't show it in the in the poster so I won't ruin it okay there's something about the way she's drawn that you you it's it's subtle but it's there something I'd pick up on yeah something that you pick up on that's not been done with the character before to my knowledge okay then you've got Finn Wolf hard from stranger things could not be in enough things don't forget he was also in it yeah if the party would forget that because I didn't see it fair enough arguably one of the best parts of the first chapter of it plays Pugsley which just works uncle Fester played by the great Nick Crowl who is always underrated cousin it played by the Snoopy dog dog because reasons and let's just say his entrances as expected yeah yeah a bit midler playing grandma works Alice and Jenny playing the the antagonist in this she kind of has that antagonist voice she fit Martin sort Catherine O'Hara amazing amazing Harland William also amazing Palm Climbing Tef I can never say her name right Clementy off there you go also amazing and if I say the name Maggie Wheeler does that mean anything to you I know the name I can't put a face to it Chandler bang oh it's Janice so it starts out with just the background of them being run out of quote unquote the old country okay they don't specify anything more specific than old country no and so they decide they're going to lead because they're being chased out by the villagers and they want to go to a place that's so despicable so bad so evil that they would blend right in Indiana and I swear I said it right before it happened oh no I went New Jersey so you get the origin of how lurch comes into the fold awesome arguably my favorite character on the Adams family he was everyone's and they use him really well in this well it's it's one of those scary things no pun intended because you can overuse a non-speaking character too much at times but they but they do with him and this is great so then fast forward the kids of the kids are now teenagers okay and they live in this oh so we have a flash forward yeah I'm sorry you're right okay sorry I apologize they live up in this house on a hill that used to be in the say asylum because that's it so now we're in the valley of that area because it's always covered by fog and stuff and you have Margo Needler also Janice character who is a home improvement guru oh no on the home and garden network I see what they did there look at those look at the initials yeah she is decide she's gonna take this town called assimilation and she's going to do a live finale where she's going to sell all the houses that she's remodeled in this town not realizing what's up on the hill directly in the frame from her house now the point is to do the entire town correct okay when she realizes the house on the hill mm-hmm she decides either she's they're gonna let her remodel their house or she will take more drastic measures interesting I feel like that's a point where we have to leave that well but but this all descends upon to the entire Adam's family extended family coming to town for a ride of passage ceremony for Pugsley interesting so that would be in the vein of like a bar mitzvah okay kind of sort of so when I was writing my comments on my comment card mm-hmm that we give to the vendors because the vendors ask us to write our comments that they submit to the film companies along with our reviews and I always find it cool that they want us to tell them the honest truth that's why we love our vendors absolutely my first three words a pleasant surprise really it runs right at an hour 27 so it stays inside that 90-minute mark where animated films should be in my opinion and usually it's really hard to do a movie in 90 or less minutes that's quality the story works there's not a lot of like watch the age was 40 minutes oh really that's late for you so I was very entertained by this they had there's a lot of kids that were there cosplaying which was great cool our vendors always use such an amazing job promoting their films there was like a local drama company that came dressed as some of the characters and they sang the theme song before the movie started and tell me the entire audience snapped oh absolutely yes lots of Wednesday Adams around well coming from that age I still have an unhealthy crush on Christina Ricci from Wednesday Adams I know that's not exactly cool you were around that same age though yeah I was in college I would have been it wasn't creepy for me no MC Hammer song let's just say it pro-com but there's a Christina Aguilar song called haunted heart that's really good it's a very Christina Aguilar okay and then the Snoopy dog dog has a collaboration with some other people and of course he does I really enjoyed this film I laughed out loud in multiple points really oh absolutely they're usually very reserved friends of ours in the press court were like I totally heard you laughing and I was right there with you of all the times we've seen a funny movie there's only maybe two movies I can remember you laughing loud enough for somebody to hear and it's been a while so that speaks volumes and laughing I was laughing loudly because they were moments that kind of took me off guard which is always great when you when you know what the formula is and you see what's coming next all on New Jersey it doesn't work it's still I still giggled yeah but it's just it's there's enough of a nod to the past of the Adams family without trying to be that and there is such a history with that where people have that attachment because I know from my personal experience watching you know we dangerously putting these near each other the Adams family and the monsters with my grandparents when they watched me to into the movies for the Adams family and some failed attempt at the monsters coming back and then getting into this there's so much history I mean 81 years and everybody has some level of attachment because everybody remembers yep it just doesn't it works it works on every level it doesn't it doesn't try to be that it's its own story still and it works which is so hard really really well when there's so much to pull off of with it so I literally just got a text from the king of bowling oh really just got done seeing this film at the theater and he's about where in the ballpark of where I was good he said it was better than he thought it would be I it definitely exceeded my expectations now I do have a dangerous connection question sure is this more like what they should have started doing with hotel Transylvania or is this just kind of too much of its own thing apples and oranges apples and oranges okay cuz I know all three of those films I enjoyed see but I know that they kind of easily declined with each one so I didn't know if there should have been more let's say borrowing or trying to I just I saw Caput there's a nice little homage to a film you referenced earlier okay in it now there is a still in the in the M-Dib but it's I'm not gonna give it away if you don't know okay it's just really well done the animation looks great there's nothing that I can say was wrong with this film it hit all the right notes it was properly it pays I can't I really can't think of anything to nitpick wow I mean it was it's a lot of fun cuz you let's be honest you like to nitpick I do I do I really for for 84 minutes of my life just sat there and enjoyed this thing huh it's so much fun and really really is and unlike other movies of its ilk in the last few years they're timing it's release well absolutely cuz it's it's Halloween Halloween yeah and this is the kind of movie and I said this in my written review currently located at WWW dot the clubhouse podcast dot com that's our website that I could see this being like I would say make your kids seven or eight before you see them because it's it's still the Adams family so kind of creepy but oh there's the other question before we move on if you're saying seven or eight and you're saying it's kind of creepy there was always the kind of in you window between Gomez and Morticia that may have been a little too adult at times not really in this not in this okay so there's your disclaimer on the adult content I could see this being something that you watch with the family every October as you're as you're decorating the house and wow because it's something that's good that's for the whole family okay and there's there's lots of little things that you can look for in this lots of pseudo Easter eggs I really enjoyed the origin of lurch which we talked about off of off air cuz I don't want to give it away if people don't know this is a really really well done film and I think it's a great film for families there was never a point where I was like because there was a lot of kids at this screening and there was never a point in that whole film where I was like maybe this could get weird yeah you know and I think that's all I got so we get to the final analysis the way we do the final analysis on the show we're not going to give you thumbs up thumbs down letters numbers snaps that's very willing color and a twist yep and a twist a citrus twist it's two questions question number one is would I see this again if the answer is no we're done here but if the answer is yes then it's how would I see it again full price in the theater down to a twilight showing down to a matinee down to early morning on the weekend down to second run at the dollar theater down to getting a physical copy of it whether renting or not or down to streaming down to cable just basically how much effort you'd want to put it's that you want to sum it up so yes sir there are people listening that want to know I'm hoping there are okay rob would you see the Adam's family again yes yes I would excellent those are always more fun because then we get to ask how far would you go because this is a family film I would say go as a matinee matinee and then go do your autumn autumn no things afterwards good use of it's a it's a it's a good way to to kind of get you in the frame of mind no no pun intended the spirit of things really I had no I had to I had to qualify it no pun intended but I really don't felt intended co-directed by Greg Tierman and Conrad Vernon this is the newest version of the Adam's family and thanks again to Julian everybody at Morocco have this out they always do such an amazing job we love our vendors they let us see movies early so we can talk to you guys about them and you can make the best decisions
