Welcome, my name is Rob, I'm the executive producer of the clubhouse podcast,
and what we're about to talk about ain't no bear necessities my friend. Stay with me,
but I'm not alone for this particular episode joining me in the co-host here is the lady of the house
course, and I think she's going to be intrigued about what we're about to talk about. She is
general welcome friend. Hello everyone. Rounding out the day is the official fact checker of this show
and a man who sometimes feels baloo. You may know him as fond don go or igbunu but his mom and
him don't ford I'm gonna call him don't ford what's going on brother. The blue by you. That'd be
the baloo. That's what I said. No you said blue. Whatever we do one of these things it is to review
something this is no exception again. Home show number 451. We march on. Andy circus. The master of
motion capture. He likes the precious. That was a terrible golem I apologize. Yeah, but he's directing
and doing voice work for a brand new film available on Netflix. It's called Mowgli Legend of the
Jungle. Ford we start this whole thing. Yes sir. We got to think our best Josh and our best friends.
Allied integrated marketing. We love our vendors. And we want to spend a special shout out
at Allied to Tanya who's on the men. Oh yeah. Give better. She's on the men. So we're out there for
you. So we love you Tanya and we're looking forward to seeing you again very very soon. This is based
on the Rudger Rudyard Kipling classic story that we all know that Disney made into the jungle book twice.

I try to make it as clear as possible. This is not a traditional telling of this tale as you may
know it. This thing has been circling around Hollywood for years. Warner Brothers actually made it.
Netflix bought it. And Andy circus has said from jump. This is a darker telling of this story. And
it is. There are aspects to this that I don't know that I've ever seen in another version of it.
It's not. It's not happy go lucky. It's not. There's no musical numbers in this.
Cause roll changes a little bit in this. But let me just run down this voice cast.
Baguira the Panther. It's played by Christian Bale.
Ca the aforementioned Ca is Kate Blindshed.
Cher Khan the antagonist is Benedict Cumberbatch. Which has me interested.
You've got Naomi Harris. Circus plays Balu. Jack Rainer who was featured in another film
we're going to be reviewing very very soon. Tom Hollander, Frida Pinto. Frida Pinto is actually
in the film herself. She is one of the human actors. Mowgli is played by a Rohan Chan.
You probably haven't seen much of him. He's done a few things but these are relative newcomer.
And then you've got Matthew Reese is in this.
The visual style of this takes a little bit of getting used to. And I'm hoping by talking about
this now you'll be able to connect with it a little bit quicker than I did. Cause this is a solid
uh I think it's 145. 144. Yeah. Right about 145. And he hasn't directed much.
Circus hasn't had to because he's making all his money. I know but he only did like that one or
two things before this. But he's been around that. Oh yeah he's been yeah. I mean he's been acting
in all that. Yeah. So I want you guys to go back if you remember. And this is going to be a
weird comparison but I need you to roll with me for a minute. About 20 or so years ago there was a
movie called Dragonheart. Yes. With the Sean Connery. Yes. And remember that. Yeah. Where he played
a dragon. And what I found fascinating about that film is a very early in CGI's life.
But there were certain moments in that film where the dragon would do something. And I could see
Connery's facial expressions in it. Yeah. I remember how hard they worked on that. That is a very
big player in this. With all of the cast members. So when you know who's doing the voice because
and again visually it takes a little getting used to because it's not Disney. You know. But it's
well done. So there are certain moments when Bajira is talking to Mogli and I'm like yeah that's
Christian Bell. Or when Shere Khan is doing what he does and I'm like that's been at the Cumberbatch.
So there's a little bit of an adjustment there. Where has the way Disney does it? It's the other
way around where it's the character to the actor. In this film, Circus makes a very conscious
choice that it's actor to character. I don't know if this is good for the little ones because
this there is a level of violence to this film. There's also the subplot of Mogli being banished
to the village of man. But he's not necessarily treated in the same
wistful manner that he has in other tellings of this. The cast system is in place. Well,
it's not necessarily a cast system. But what I like the way they played it is, you know, he speaks
to the animals, the animals speak to him, but he can't speak to man because he doesn't actually
speak man's language. So it's kind of neat the way that works. But again, there's definitely some
very, very dark material here. Like at one point, I was like, oh, we're going there.
So this was the story before Tinkerbell's sprinkled pixie dust over it. Correct. I would say that this
does stick a little bit closer to the source material because Roger Kipling was known for
not known for pulling punches in his writing. And for people that don't know, the jungle book story
as it were is actually just one small part of a much larger collection of stories that Kipling wrote.
So it's visually beautiful. I wouldn't say stunning because again, it took me a little bit to
lock into the visual style of this, but it's better than God's of Egypt visually. Can I say that?
Don knows what I'm talking about. Yeah, yeah. It didn't look like a really badly done video game.
Okay. I mean, visually it works. But I think that the darker side of it, and I say this in my written
review that if you want to do this for family movie night, parents watch it first. Where's that review
at? It's at www.theclubhousepodcast.com. That's our website. Parents watch it first and then decide
if this is going to be what? Where is the threshold that you can watch this with your kids? Because
there's some very intense sequences in this, especially when Mowgli is trying to become a member of
the pack. The race scene is very intense in this. There's going to be a lot of people that are
going to want to compare this to the Disney live action version. Don't. Because there's going to be
a lot of differences. Go into this just to enjoy it. It's not a bad film by any stretch of the
imagination, but it's not great. Is there a bit of thread that's going to be familiar if you are
totally? Totally. So it's not just a complete change. It's just a non-disnified version of a true
story. Right. You absolutely nailed it. So you would say this is even the plot itself is more to
the book original book than just as I remember it. Yes. I haven't read the original story in a long
time. So you're not that old. So when you think a jungle book, don't take, yeah, this is going to be
more adult. Yeah, the spear. I would say more adult. It's just a little bit darker. It's still a
beautiful story, but it's definitely not. There's no musical numbers in this. No, Bayer,
we're not skipping across the lake. We're not climbing a tree. I mean, we are, but for completely
different reasons. But I kind of like what they did with Ka in this one better. Because she's more
of like, she's still like, don't cross her. But she's seen more as a seer. She knows the past. She
knows the future. She knows the present. And so she tends to be very, very little, used very
little, but she tends to be a more of a guide for Mowgli. And I will also tell you there's a sequence
with the monkey kingdom that gets it that's got a lot of violence to it. I mean, there's violence
in this film. Oh, wow. That's why it's running PG 13. Yeah. So and that would be realistic for
something happening in the jungle. Yeah. But again, like I said, I didn't like fall all over
myself. I actually the lovely and talented Mrs. Urban and I watched this together because I was
able to get a screener copy of it and we watched it in the living room together over dinner.
Because our vendors rock. They do very, very much so. And she really enjoyed it. She said,
I will tell you the end credits, the way they attach who's who before the credits role is kind
of cool the way they do that. But my wife really enjoyed this. I don't know that I enjoyed it
as much as she did, but the lovely and talented Mrs. Urban does tend to have good taste. She does.
So in many things indeed, indeed. Anything else you guys want to ask for? We get to the bottom of this
thing. No. All right, let's do the final analysis. Now this is a Netflix thing, but it is going to get
a theatrical run. But we'll still do this a little bit differently because Netflix wants to get
their stuff in theater so they can be just, you know, considered for awards because it's that time of
year. Up to two questions. Question number one is, would I watch this film again if the answers
know them were done here? Since it is Netflix, the question becomes, where would I put this in my
Netflix queue? So the higher, of course, the higher up in my queue, the more I would tend to
put it or importance on it. Yeah. All right. See if this weekend, would you see it in the weekend
a month? That kind of thing. Okay. So Rob. Yes, ma'am. Would you see this again? I would.
And where in your queue would you put this? Well, I'm looking at my list of films that I've seen
this year and at the time of this recording, I have seen right around 70 films. Okay. I would say
this would be in the top two thirds of that. Okay. With three weeks to go left in the year and
probably another maybe dozen films for me to watch because we got a ton of them to watch.
I would put this in the top two thirds. So in your queue, you would probably put it in the
watch it in the two, two, three weeks kind of thing. This would be one of those. Hey,
let's see what's in the queue. Oh, yeah, let's watch this. Okay. Like I wouldn't race to the TV. Yeah.
But if the lovely and talented Mrs. Irvin and I weren't in the mood to watch TV and we wanted to
watch a movie and she said, hey, can we watch Mowgli? I'd be like, yeah, okay. I wouldn't go out of
my way, but if it's there, I'm there. It is Andy circus, the great Andy circus directing Mowgli
Legend of the Jungle. Again, for the end of the soul thing. Yes, I think Josh and her best friends
we love our vendors. They let us see movies and stuff. Now we can tell you guys about them so you
