Welcome, my name is Rob, I'm the executive producer of the clubhouse podcast and we are not amused.
Let it sit for a minute, just let it sit, let it let it marinate, just let it just let it take over your soul. It's okay, given to it. But I'm not alone with this particular episode joining me in the co-host chair is the lady of the house. And somebody I think is going to be pretty interested in the discussion we're about to have. She is Jen Rome. Welcome, friend. Hello, everyone.
Rounding out the day is the official fact checker of this show and a man that believes it was not Scottish is crap. You may know it was fun, don't go or Igboonu, but his mom and even done for it. I'm going to come down for it. What's up, sir? What did you say in English? That's an old Saturday night live sketch that Mike Myers did where he was he ran a shop that was called everything Scottish. And if it's not Scottish, it's crap.
And so I married an axe marker. I've been Ireland. But that's not what we're going to talk in England. So Josie Rorke is the director of a film. This is the first time she's ever directed something. She's been miscellaneous crew before where she's been a director of stage production. So she's directed things, but she's never directed a film. So why not for her first film, the direct.
Then the story of Mary Queen of Scots.
Forward, start this whole thing. Yes, sir. We got to thank Julie and their great friends at Slifox. Zimini, Zimini, Zimini, Zimini. We love our vendors. They let us see movies and stuff. We saw this one almost two weeks at a time. We got to Josh too. Oh, absolutely. He's cool. He is a cool. Yeah. He knows who I am and that's important. Okay.
So here's what you need to know. Searsha Ronan. I've been working on that all day. So I made sure I said it right. If it's if you're in her home and it's Searsha here, it could be Searsha. You're good either way. But she says Searsha. I'm going with Searsha.
She plays the legendary Mary Queen of Scots. Margot Robbie plays QE1. There's also a guy pierced sighting in this film. We have guy pierced in this film.
It's real fast. QE1 is Queen Elizabeth the first for the people like me who may not. But he's just answered. No, it's so why would you say that?
They said look it up. So yeah, but okay. QE1. All right. I need therapy. So really this story takes place starting when Mary comes back after she's gone to France to marry and her husband passes away.
So she comes back to reclaim the throne of Scotland. But she by technical definition has claimed to more than that. So what you have is her half brother has been King of Scotland while she's gone. She comes back.
But the other problem is you have Elizabeth and her advisors who are like, you know, she's technically going to claim the throne here.
And if she produces an air, things are going to get weird. So there's a lot of the back and forth where Elizabeth is like, hey, you should marry this guy because you may not know this. But if you marry him, we've got you under our thumb and we're good.
And she's going, yeah, probably not so much. And the only way I could describe this film, it's the Godfather in Victorian England. Like that's the only way I could because this, this is some gangster stuff that goes on in this film. It's two hours and five minutes.
Oh, wow.
Let me say, and Don, I think you'll agree with me on this. I felt every minute of this film. What do you mean felt? It's long. Yeah. What was your watch cage? 30 minutes? Oh, but it was about every 10 after that. Yeah, I do need to be long. I mean, was it was enough that had to be covered. There's a lot going on here. Let's just say this.
I don't know that there's anything I would have trimmed. It's just long. And I think it might have been better served in pieces in like a mini series because there's so much to digest in the story. And I didn't know much about this story.
Now, my sister, Charlotte is chomping at the bit to see this film. She would have been with me if she hadn't had to work when we went to the screening because she's very, she's a history buff. She's really into this.
She's also brilliant. And I've also told her I will take her when it comes out.
I did not know how gangster Mary was. Mary Stewart, like she wasn't playing. And, but here's the thing.
Searsher Ronan, you get exactly what you expect from Searsher Ronan in this. She's a great actress. I mean, she got nominated for a ladybird, you know.
Can I kind of add, knowing your personality, Jen, you would love her character because she was a standup lady in a time in a very male dominated more than we could say today.
And she would stand up in the B. She would stand up to the people and say, stuff that, oh my God, you said to this guy, yeah, I'm the queen.
Yeah. I mean, I'm going to take that as a compliment.
I mean, she is where, and that is part of her dynamic between her and Elizabeth, where Mary was just more naturally that way.
But Elizabeth became that way because of the throne. And that's addressed in this. Oh, yeah.
Margot Robbie kills in this. She is so like last year, she did it.
Oh, yeah, which was brilliant. Like, and her careers kind of had this weird rollercoaster thing.
When she did it, Tonya, I said back then, like, it took me a minute to lock her in. But once I locked her in, I couldn't see her. I only saw Tonya.
In this, I never didn't see Margot Robbie, but the performance was so good. I didn't care.
I didn't, here's, here's the show I have with Margot Robbie. There, there was a lot of press lately about her doing this role.
And now she kills it. And she does great. I'm the first to say that she does great. But here's the problem, which I saw while watching this film at the very end.
For all the buzz about it, she's not in this film much. She doesn't have to be only she's only in about 15 minutes when you really, really think about it.
And that's, that's why that's her story. And I know, but she's a major part of the story.
That's like doing the blues brothers and not bringing in, I disagree. But I would have liked to see more of her side, because it's more, I know it's married to Queen of the sky, but the thing, the relationship between those two queens, let's just say it through our cousins, who are cousins.
The amount that she plays in this, and she doesn't credible like to see when she's ill on, we're going to say, and you I'm talking about.
Yeah, I do. Yeah. I would like to see more of her in there, because she's not in there much considering. Now, Mary, oh gosh, nails it, nails it, nails it. I'm going to say, if I was on the any academy and I was an actor, I can't
think of anybody lately in this year with a role that deserves a best actress statue.
I'm Sir Sherronin. Yeah. Yeah. I went the other way with it, because my thing was with Sir Sherronin. She gave me exactly what I expected from her, which and I set the bar pretty high with her.
It's Margot Robbie, who really, really killed it for. She's not in there enough, but she didn't have to be. I want to throw something back to you on the marker, Robbie thing.
Because you said when she was in itanya, you changed her out with Tanya, but you don't really, I mean, we were around when the whole incident happened.
Fair. So all that press and we were, we lived that we don't have a lot of QE one to relate to for you to be able to pull her out from that.
She destroys it in this. There is a scene towards the end, which historians have debated. It's the only time it's it's kind of like that moment in heat.
Yeah. When Danero and Pichino are finally together, there is that scene here, which historians have debated whether they've ever actually met face to face, because you know, it's history.
Yeah. They didn't have phones to record it. If there was, if I were picking a sequence to submit to the academy, if I was trying for best pick,
trying for best picture, that is the scene I would submit because there is such a palpable respect, love, intention, all at the same time in that sequence that I was just like,
in Mary plays that part well where she goes, oh, yeah, I'm married. I'm just talking in the story where she plays that part so well and so smart. She goes, okay, I'll marry this guy, but you have to make me the successor.
Yeah, you make me the successor. I don't want your throne. I just want to be the successor in my son who I could bear, hand in, knock, knock.
Tell me because she's gangster. Yeah. It's history. We know this story. Yeah. I mean, she would. This one, I'm really confident. I love how Rona did this. I'm saying best actress for her.
Robbie, she incredible. I'm gonna say she's incredible, but not enough of her. I would like to see more of her character in the film.
I was totally okay with it. I totally okay. I want more. That's. I mean, just historically good looking. Simba talk. Oh, and Academy.
Vegas, betting odds, Oscars, costuming. Don't bet against this.
Was was the costuming historically accurate? Dead on. Dead on. Yeah. That's one saying Oscar. Hello.
I get annoyed when there's a zipper and it's this kind of time period because they didn't have zippers.
What I really liked is especially showing the difference between the palace in England and the palace in Scotland.
Where her basically her throne room is just like a plane room with a circle of chairs in one main chair.
Whereas, you know, with England, it was the ornate, the, and I mean, just watching the cat and mouse game between them with them,
they're not even being together. Again, this is a long film. And it works. Can't. I didn't get up and go.
Don did not leave. He did not leave during this film. And I just realized he's right because he was sitting right next to me.
I know and for one that long. Wow. But it gets complicated. It does. You have. There's a lot. There's a lot to this story as there should be because their relationship was very complicated.
Yeah. And it just man. But there are a couple of bruises after this is. It does get. That's historically accurate.
But just the portrayal of Mary and her level of intelligence. Where she's real like, yeah, underestimate me. Feel free.
That's going to make this victory even sweeter. Yeah. I mean, just. I see. I see some statues next year for this film and actress. And Alex, I know you like to bet.
If you hear me out on this, if you get a bet on costuming and Vegas on the Oscars, do this one over another film you've seen recently that you are completely Gaga over in that category.
I'm saying this from this same era. I'm saying that I was saying. Yeah, it was nominations for that. But this one even does better. Wow. Yeah. Those cost me. I love that outfit. There was one scene with Robbie at the very end when it's snowing. It's all I'm saying.
Yeah. And that outfit she wore. And that made a point about her where she's about. She's. I'm human again. I'm back to being myself. Then you go.
Man, she goes, yep, gotta be myself. Yeah. Yeah. That moment where she goes from because she talks about how the throne has made her more man than woman. And just the transformation of watching it happen was really cool.
And the fact that Mary who just she's gangster to the end, like to the end, like even in the final scene. And if you know the story, you know how it ends. Still defiant. Like just as like, man, this is a good movie.
Especially given that there is another film that it will directly compete with that takes her place around the same time. Probably right before.
That a lot of people are giving awards nods to and I'm not sure there's definitely some that I would go with not as my name is any other.
Because the day we record this, the Golden Globe nominations hit.
But don't be surprised to hear this film mentioned come January. It's just it's that good. Not anything else where we get to file analysis.
Alright, let's get to the file analysis the way the file analysis works for going to two questions question number one is what do we see this film again if the answers know them were done here.
But if the answers yes, then the follow question is how far are we willing to go to do so from the best of the best of the worst of the best. Here's how it works.
Full price to the theater down to a twilight showing down to a matinee showing down to an early morning on a weekend down the second one of the dollar theater down to actually leaving the house to get it from a red box down the streaming on Netflix down to watching it on tablet.
Let's see what I did there. It's cable. All right, Don. Yes, would you see Mary Queen of Scots again? Yeah, all right. How far you want to go to do it.
It's just got too complicated a little too long, but there's so much I loved about it. That's so torn.
Let's do I can't give it coveted. I can't just sort of things I loved and I say no screws and certain things twilight.
Fair enough.
Somebody can ask the question. This is believe that Queen says go ahead and hurt you. Go for it.
Rob, will you see this again? I would. And how far are you willing to go?
That's where it gets complicated. I think I heard that recently because because it felt so long I can't put it in the upper echelon.
This is still an amazing film. It's gorgeous. It's incredibly well executed.
To see it again, which I will do because I'm taking my sister when it comes out.
I would probably line up with Don and say a matinee just because it's good. I can't put it in the upper echelon.
What do you say twilight? Well, I'm going to go matinee. I'm going to go one step below Don then.
It's good, but it's definitely you. I felt every minute.
And I'm recommendation to you. If we take Charlotte, you might want to go.
Oh, well, I was going to say hearing your review because I was on the fence about this one.
And I mean, schedule wise, I wasn't able to go, but I really think I will definitely be checking this one out after hearing the two of you talk about it.
I will tell you there are multiple times during this film where the audience went, ooh, I'll tell you.
It gets, it gets gangster. I'm going a lot because I will say having been a fan or a member of the Empire prior to being cast,
when the two of you agree this much on something, I have never been let down.
There's something to that. Yeah, when, when the two of you are in full agreement, I have always enjoyed what I turned around and saw.
