My name is Rob.
I'm the executive producer of the clubhouse podcast and sometimes I just want to watch
stuff explode on the screen.
I'm not alone for this particular episode.
Joining me across the desk is my co-host and a man who's not above an action film every
once in a while.
Welcome sir.
Oh absolutely not.
First of all, let me apologize.
I'm already kind of froggy.
I've been having some severe allergy issues these last couple of days and it's finally
affecting my voice.
Not a good thing.
Not a good time.
Well plus I've been teaching all day today and I didn't help you.
So whenever we do one of these, it is to review something.
This is no exception.
So we're going to talk about a director today that hasn't done a lot of things you may
know.
His name is Donovan Marsh.
Okay.
And he has worked with a couple of screenwriters to adapt the 2012 novel firing point and
turned it into a film called Hunter Killer.
And before we get moving, we want to thank Julie and everybody at Sly Fox.

It's so weird when I stick it by myself.
Because I'm not about to intercede.
We love our vendors so much.
They give us the opportunity to watch movies early and then we can tell you guys about them
because that's how we roll and bring the musical way down because man is going to
look at my voice.

Now, I'm just going to run some names for you first.
Okay.
Common.

Huge fan.
Yes.
Gary Oldman.
Greatness.
Didn't see that coming.
Did you?

Linda Cartellini.
How are you doing?
Oh, I like her.
Uh-huh.
I don't know.
She was in this.
Gerard Butler.
Huge fan.
So Hunter Killer refers to a type of submarine.
Mm-hmm.
Familiar with that?
Some opens right off the coast of Russia where we have a sub there that's kind of testing
itself out in its capabilities.
Little cat and mouse going on with a Russian sub.
All of a sudden Russian sub gets hit by something sinks.
Right after that, American sub gets hit by torpedo sinks.
So of course, they lose contact with the Pentagon, moved to the Pentagon, and Common
actually plays R.A. John Fisk, the rear admiral that stands for that, that sounds about
right.
It's hard.
So he realizes they've lost contact and contacts C.J.C.S. Charles Donigan.
What does that stand for?
He's the, he's like the, what's the thing that he's on the cabinet, but he is in the
military.
Yeah.
Sounds like part of a strategic command.
Right.
Uh-guery oldman plays him.
Okay.
That was my next question.
Is it so American or Russian?
What's going on here?
So they contact because reasons.
They contact Captain Joe Glass.
That's Gerard Butler.
That would be Gerard Butler, by any chance.
For him to Captain, no, are sub still USS?
Yes.
Okay.
So he has to, he's asked the Captain, the USS Arkansas.
Wait, why, I think USS is a big SSN.
You tell me, I don't know.
Okay.
You're the guy with the military.
I know, but it's been years.
And shout out to Mikey, because there are Arkansas state logos all over the insolent
sub.
Okay.
And I believe that the one that sunk was the little rock, which is kind of strange.
Yeah, it is.
So they get commissioned to with this new crew of his to go find out what's going on.
Why can't we find out what's going on here?
So while this is going on, you have these four guys that are.
They're military guys of some form.
We assume army.
They never really, they never really say.
But there are these sniper black ops, black ops probably.
And they're out doing their training.
And then they get a call that they've got to go do some recon at this Russian base.
Because once we find out, there's some fishy things going on.
And the Russian president is at this military base.
So while the sub thing is going on, they're going there.
And it's one of those, hey, take off your IDs, put them in this box because this is something
happens to you.
You never existed kind of things, right?
Definitely black ops, then.
So while all this is going on, then by the way, Linda Carter, Lee, he works for the NSA.
Okay.
So while all this is going on, the Russian president's at this military base meeting with his top
advisor, his name is Admiral Dimitri Durov, played by Michael Gore, who's been like the
bad guy in like 100 movie shows.
So we already know this is not going to, this is not going to go well.
He decides we need to be a war with America.
So he stages a coup and basically kidnaps the Russian president.
Well the surveillance guys get a hold of this.
They tell the Pentagon, the Pentagon tells the submarine, oh, by the way, we need you
to go rescue.
We need you to rendezvous with these guys who are going to rescue the Russian president
and get the hell out of there.
You're with me so far.
Yeah.
I'm struggling, but I'm there.
So while all this is going on, when they find the Russian sub that had had, that had been
sunk, was that even chromatically close?
They find three survivors and bring them on board.
Wow.
Because action movies, most of sunken very shallow water.
So one of them is the captain of said submarine, oh, where's my scroller?
And he is Captain Andropov played by the great Michael Lykovist, God rest his soul.
So now the Americans and the Russians, because apparently were enemies again, are working
together to navigate literally the minefield to get to this Russian base, because you know,
depth charges and mines.
Yes.
And audio charges.
That's also an interesting bit.
To rendezvous with the army guys who are trying to rescue the Russian president to save
him from the coup and prevent the world from being a war.
Okay.
I've got tired head now.
Okay.
That's the whole thing.
Oh, good God.
And by the way, the clock is ticking naturally, right.
So Don and I saw this together, Don has an appointment to see me that he needed to be at.
Right.
Very important.
So he could not be here.

So here's how I put this.
And you and I talked about this in pre-show.
Yes.
So you know that thing, wow, it's geodled, where you're channel surfing in the middle of
the night and you're at like cinemax 47 stars, plus, plus, right.
And you see this cast list on a movie and you're like, wow, I'll check that out.
It's four in the morning, you know, I can't sleep.
And you get done with it, because this is a solid two hours and you get done with it
and you're like, I'm not exactly sure what just happened here, but it's not two hours
of my life that I want back.
Okay.
I give you Hunter Killer.
This film has every element of an 80s action film.
And let me, I need to go back to my written review so I can do this right, because we obviously
have cheesy dialogue to, oh, yes, oh, yes.
But first of all, I told you this earlier, old men choose scenery like it's family night,
the golden corral.
And it's glorious.
It's like, this is just a paycheck.
So I was to the point where I was looking for any combination of Chuck Norris, Steven
Seagull, and I even put Michael Duda-Coff on this list, the American ninjas on this
list.
Oh, dear God, I'm not kidding you, but it's not at the point of parody, and that's the
weird part of it.
Is it it should be maybe or not really?
Like it stays on this side of the line, but it's like the whole time I'm like, did I wake
up in 1987?
Like not that I'm complaining.
Not a bad you're gonna wake up in, but, but this is so over the top, that's too bad.
But not in a, like at no point was like, I was like, I didn't do that at any point.
It's for a solid two hours, it's paced decently.
But this is one of those movies who for guys who like movies kind of movies.
It's kind of like, did you feel the same way whenever you saw like Invasion USA, which
up Norris in it back in the day, or-
Quick fact about Invasion USA, one of my former bosses in Incredible Universe is an extra
in the beginning of that film.
Why does that not shock me?
Um, no, I can't compare it to anything, because I loved that movie.
That's probably my favorite Norris film of the 80s outside of the Octagon.
Like it's this side of sci-fi channel.
Oh, oh, this side of a silent?
No, it's not that bad, okay?
But like it knows what it is.
That's the thing.
It is self-aware.
The visuals are the visuals.
I know you're struggling to not really rip this, but I don't want to rip this thing,
because it's a fun movie.
It's a lot of fun.
It's, it is an 80s style action film to the core.
Could you make a drinking game out of it?
For spot the KJ.
You kind of could, because there is the, this decision you've made, this goes against
code.
You will be court-martialed.
And then Gerard Butler looks at his exo and he goes, I'll tell you what, if I make
you live long enough, you can testify.
Oh, God.
I mean, like, yeah, saw that one coming a mile away.
I'll put it to you this way.
It's got that such an old school feel, because you've got, you know, Russians and Americans
working together, and I think the battery just died on my iPad.
I was waiting for somebody to say if I can change, you can change, but it's so gloriously
cheesy.
Like, it's a guilty pleasure.
Again, I said that in my review too, that I, this could rank in the guilty pleasure category,
but it, it, it, it, it knows what it is.
Like, there's no, I mean, the, the visuals are above the board enough that it couldn't
be by the asylum, but what do you think the doc meter would be on this, oh, doc would
love this.
Okay, good.
Doc would love this movie.
I don't say somebody else.
I kept thinking of the entire time I was just, front of the show Jim Bragel would love
this movie, because it's just that 80s movie feel to it.
Those two have ever been in the same room together.
Bragel and Doc, I would venture to say no, because the world still intact.
That's what that needs to happen.
Oh, Lord have mercy.
But this felt like I said, it knows what it is, and it's exactly that.
That's the thing.
Well, that's, I mean, that's a good thing.
I said, I enjoyed this film.
I enjoyed it very much, but I can understand, let me, let me verify this.
I can understand why people would hate on it, because Butler's done better films this
year.
Like, Den of Thieves is an amazing film.
I enjoyed that very, very much.
Right now, 35% of Rotten Tomatoes.
But I feel that's unfair.
Yeah, because we've seen far better films recently, and not naming any names, but we've
seen far better films recently that haven't faired all that well on Rotten Tomatoes
because we can't figure out why, and the opposite is also true.
It's, it's just one of those movies, literally just leave your brand to door, and go have
a good time for two hours.
You're going to want to start a USA chant at least once, it's okay, you know.
But this is just a, this is a fun movie, and I don't want to say the next part, because
the next part gets into the final analysis.
Like, don't go expecting the English patient, like, just don't.
And I think that's the problem with a lot of these things, is you have people that are
just like, I need to see the next great thing, this ain't it.
You need, you need your next high art, no, no, no, so let's just go ahead and get to the
final analysis on this.
The way we do the final analysis, we're not going to give you thumbs up, thumbs down,
letter grades, numbers, torpedoes, although some people would probably take it to this.
Two questions that are going to be asked.
Question number one is, would I see this film again?
If the answer's no, we're done here, but if the answer's yes, the follow up question
becomes how far would I be willing to go to do so?
From the best of the best of the worst of the best, here's how it rolls.
Full price of the theater, down to a twilight showing, down to a matinee, down to early morning
on the weekend, down to second one at the dollar theater, down to leaving my house
to get it from red box, down to streaming it on Netflix, down to watching it on cable.
Rob?
Yes, sir.
Would you see this film again?
Who would?
I can't do the dinkas, the battery's dead on the iPad, but yes, I totally would see this
again.
How far are you willing to go?
Here's the thing.
I can't, in my good conscience, justify full price of the theater.
I can't do it.
But if you were having a guys night, just a bunch of guys hanging out, and this was on
red box, or Netflix, either way, do it.
You go to the dudes house, it's got the best audio set up.
Oh, absolutely.
It's got the biggest subwoofer.
Because he'd done in his written review, compared it to movies like U571, that was
right.
That was an ass.
The sound feels not going to match U571, because U571, when that movie finished in my DVD
player, back then, because I didn't have it blue race yet, my subwoofer needed a cigarette.
This one's not like that, but it would have enough cool effects that a really good home
theater system, you could demo some things with this.
Okay.
But it's fun.
And that's the main thing you have to understand.
Hunter Killer is just, it's mindless, go watch stuff, explode, kind of fun.
There's the Quippy-1 liners.
Oh, it took you so long, I had to come back for you, bro, kind of movie.
Just watch it.
Okay.
I will tell you.
I will tell you, I would be okay with you watching this before I, because I still want
you to watch the Legend of Chun Lee, but I think you would actually enjoy this film for
what it is.
I probably would, if for no other reason, because I've got the old Navy ties.
Well, the probably weird thing is they don't ever really say which branch they're in, because
there's some subs in there.
But there was a Hura reference, too.
Did you guys do that?
Seals do that.
Well, they weren't seals.
They were just guys that were going to sub.
Well, but, you know, okay.
I was very confused.
I'm just saying.
Because reasons.
Exactly.
