hearing the sound of my voice it means you check out the clubhouse podcast at least once
live every Sunday night seven Eastern for Pacific part of the vocal family make sure
you're going to vocal now dot com that's V.O.K.A.L. so you can get all the cool stuff from
our live shows and you can see us now too I don't know what that does for you but whatever
but it also means you subscribe in your favorite podcast app because we've renamed them because
they're going to be featured on vocal too so it's time for another home show that's
it we're calling them to figure something else out this is the 425th review show that
we're doing from the home studio welcome my name is Rob I am the executive producer of
the clubhouse podcast and I would like to hear the following but I'm not alone this particular
review joining me across the desk as he tends to do is the official fact checker of this show
and a man that enjoys French food but he doesn't enjoy French people you ain't always fun don
go but it's not my name don't want to call them don't forget I like the escar got I like the
Merlot and I do like some French people in French fries in French toast well French fries
it's not a French thing it's named after a guy who's name was French toast French toast maybe I
can add their confirm or deny but French fries are not from France okay could you know they weren't
originally fried they weren't they weren't originally done in France wow they originally fried in
Greece thank you thank you the Bob and Tom show for that whatever we do one of these it is to
review something and this is no exception we're going to talk about Don celebrity christian is when
Kira Knightley Dominic West it's called Collette for start this whole man yes sir we got
thank Julie Josh and her best lie fox zine zine zine zine we love our vendors they let us watch
movies early so we can talk to you guys about them and give you our honest opinion so you can spend
your entertainment dollar wisely so this is based on a true story turn of the century from the 19th
to the 20th century in France oh Kira Knightley plays Collette she is a kind of a country girl for
France and she falls in love with and marries willy willy played by Dominic West you might
remember him as mick nulty from the from the wire that one guy he's a bit of a socialite
reviewer well author kind of sort of he he likes to run his empire I looked at winkipedia in it said he
actually was a reviewer and a author but he also like to have people do that for him too yeah
that's the crux of this thing so he decides he wants to write a novel and by writing I mean
have other people write it and he's got a couple of guys on a staff but they're just not quite
getting the job done so Collette's been writing letters for him for some time and he decides to let
her write her story right about your experiences yeah she's got to wait with words so she does
and you know as things go because why it wouldn't be a an interesting story otherwise yeah she writes
a novel about a character named Claudine they publish the novel and it goes crazy talk of the town
absolutely a book publishers dream at the time so that of course spins into a bigger web but also
starts to put a strain on their marriage because he's very domineering and he's also got a bit of
a wandering eye amongst other things which then opens her up to a whole new world and we have it
everything go from there this was co-written and directed by a wash west morland uh-huh
this runs just under two hours long you look at his resume of some of the stuff he directed
he has a lot of those films with some of the sexual references into windows sexual
well he's also no stranger to awards because he directed still Alice which was up for some some
academy awards years ago but so because he I know what's coming because as you know of if you're
joining us for the first time you can actually find written reviews of the stuff that we do on
audio at our website www.theclubhousepodcast.com that's our website so when the written reviews come
in I edit them because reasons my English skills are the best but still you need some fine tuning
oh apparently I had a nice update to something that I could realize
so I know what's coming because I've read your review and we've said your
Kira Knightley is your Britney Palmer uh-huh and would would a Kira Knightley calendar exist you
would own it on the level that I own Britney Palmer counters they just don't which I don't understand
and to let you know that the fantastic fake fourth is aware yeah no I wouldn't be talking about it
if we weren't because you told me specifically that you had told her about this so my thought process
was I'm gonna be interested to see what Don thinks of this and then you email me your review today
and I'm just gonna let you take it from here well first off you should have seen it coming because
at the film last time last night let me ask you watch gauge 20 minutes ish oh 20 25 how many times
did not but it was but I looked at my watch though it was exactly where I thought we were now here's
my question to you uh-huh in all we've seen hundreds of films together we have literally literally
how many times have I looked at you and pointed at your watch and said what time is it that I could
probably I can't say it's never happened but I can count the number of times on one hand with
fingers left over yeah when you reached over to me and you were like hey what time is it I was like
well my first thought was oh wait a minute Don doesn't wear a watch and then I went
oh oh because if Don's asking me where we're at that can't be good and if you watched me fidget my
legs are in the last half hour hi oh I'm gonna bear I'm not gonna bear you later I'm not gonna do it
two hours of
uh
down about it for you yeah remember how you had your little meltdown with the stars born of two
hours of 15 now two hours of 15 minutes of nothing of your life of my life that I'm never going
to get back yes that's the story you told us she could put in two senses he rewrites and novels
they get famous it's about her life he goes a little haywire uh and attention thing
there were so many if you go to high written review at www that's called us podcast.com wasn't
prepared for that that was on the wrong page hold on that is our website I put on there then
there were so many scenes in this film that were not needed I'm going why did they put that
in there why did they put that in there it's a two hour film or honestly I think an hour could
have been cut out of the thing they had a you're telling let's see you're telling my life story
okay in seventh grade one night I had stew for dinner and then I went for a walk and then I
went skiing the next day and then I will agree with you I will tell you there's one specific
scene that I didn't understand its existence and I will simply say this
yeah I was like okay and I'm looking back after seeing this and I looked at director and he
had a lot like I said earlier a lot he wasn't there you look at him directly you were looking at
his career yeah I said there are a lot of sexual endal films that he's done and this is
part for the course for him because there is a lot of sexual situations fine and she was a
risque woman at the time and some of the stuff is true and like I said if people that don't know
the story I don't want to give it away but there is a journey of self-discovery in this
that examines things that were very taboo back then yes experimentation is the best way
that's good but that's good but this film I was just and I love my care nightly yes you do yes
you do as much as a fantastic pay for not as much but I not even she could save this film I was
just for the last half hour is it over yet is it over yet because I only walked out of one film
which made my top ear because of the platoon thing in a dodgy over strings I have enough I've
been sat through Terrence Malik you did more than once and I had more than one of his films yeah and I
had to sit through this one here too and I was just saying just get over there's just the plot is too
simplistic of like what you were saying with the stars born he's a drug you we get a boom two
hours of building a relationship he had this is the same thing they get married they write some
books he gets a little jealous he's full with the money and they put this film into a short
period of her life there was a lot of her life that they don't never went into after she has a
later career is the best way to put it I would say this is their beginning career she has a
latter career and if you look in Wikipedia right and so they mentioned a little bit before the
credits and that was a real fast thing they just wanted I think to make a thing of the sexual
into windows with the thing of the he's it's kind of like the blue one the big guys remember the
big guys with crypto bots wants somebody else doing the credit right but it's with books but it's
based off some true events you're not the first person that's mentioned that to me yeah I just
did not get this so did you feel like this I did not dislike it as much as you did I thought
now maybe I've been thinking about this lot today because we saw this the night before we recorded
this would I have disliked it more if I hadn't seen a star is born first probably yeah yeah but my
bar was set so low after that direct that I can't say that I thoroughly enjoyed this film I think
it's a solid script that I believe that in more than one point almost collapses under its own weight
I will agree if you there yeah but I thought that their chemistry was really really good and I've
been I mean I can't look at Dominic West and I go it's a minority but I really enjoyed both
of these performances I thought they were both right now would I put them on a podium come
February probably not but I wouldn't be surprised if if there were some conversation now I will
tell you in my written review currently located at www.theclubhousepodcast.com that's our website
there is one aspect of this film that I wouldn't be surprised if there's some chatter
and that would be the cinematography possibly this movie is shot beautifully and it is
trying to show fray and I read that they filmed a lot of us in Budapest some of the countryside
England supposedly and it showed and it barbed the thing I put it would I love the scenery I love
the nature it's show France well and that was beautiful yeah and possibly costume design because it's
just one of those films I could see that there um but in this might be one of those Oscar darling
things because it's one of those foo foo films could I see her well we're in q4 so this is the
way something and is this going to be like for instance here nightly she didn't stuff like
pride beyond the pirates and stuff like that she didn't stuff like pride and prejudice this is a
paralle this is something friend of the show Cynthia Jordan who was sitting next to me at the
screening she looked at me at one point she goes outside of bend it like Beckham can she not do
period pieces like you know that's a fair point well was that one where she's the singer and
stuff like that uh god with oh yeah I forgot about that yes yeah so I forgot but I have to
by the same guy that did once yeah roofalow way to have mark before yeah so great mark rough a
lot so I mean James Corden was in that yeah that was before anybody really knew who he was but
it's just I was just in the last 10 the first 15 20 minutes I was kind of into it had a good story
I knew it was slow moving that's mine but it just goes to a snail's pace and I was beginning again
was the name yeah it's just I'm done I'm done I just I just just get this over with please
yeah I just I mean I can't say that like this movie knocked me out but I just didn't I didn't
have the venom for it that you tend to I I enjoyed it it's a decent film I again not the best film
I've seen this year not gonna make my top 10 but I thought they were really good in it I thought
the story was told well but I agree with you it drags in certain points there definitely could have
been some some some tightening up of this thing done I thought they could have cut it now there
were certain things that I think they breeze through a little fast while other things they dragged
more than they should have time but I don't know I I thought it was a decent flick but you
and you and I are definitely gonna disagree on this and I think maybe they should have done more
of her life instead of trying to stick in this area in the marriage in the I'd like to say the
sexual prowess part because she had a lot in her life after this and I think they could have
done a more period story of her life and that would have done the film a lot a lot a lot better
than this thing if they would have done her life story instead just this thing and with this
director I think that's just anything else you want to go through before we hit the file analysis
I think I got it out of me all right the way we do the final analysis on the show we're not
gonna give you thumbs up thumbs down we're not gonna give you letters numbers books anything
like that I'm gonna ask Don and myself up to two questions question number one is would we see
this film again if the answers know them were done here but if the answers yes then the second
follow up question is how far would we be willing to go do so from the best of the best of the
worst the best here's your spectrum full price of the theater down to a twilight down to a
matinee down to early morning on a weekend from there we go to the second one at the dollar theater
from there we go to actually leaving your house to get it from red box down to streaming on Netflix
down to cable Don let's start with you would you see Collette again now to make the point that I
could be fair with my dear nightly and be objective even though she can save this no and I'm
making a promise the maze render promise because I only done this this can be the third time uh-huh
and this turns mal comes out with 10 films this year this film will make my top 10 worst of the year
well find out the end of the year I actually I can't say I wouldn't see this film again
but I will say that I would wait I mean this would be something that if it came on cable and
there was nothing else going on and I didn't feel like grabbing the wrong spectrum yeah I mean
it's you know I would I would throw it up there and say oh that's what going on here
but you know it is what it is but what it is is wash Westmoreland directing Collette
all right for you this madness again we got Julie Josh here but it's slifox
