Something about beauty in the in the beholder or something like that. Yeah, and I only got one eye. So I got it
Whatever we do one of these it is to
Review something and this is no exception
Drew Goddard
He's been around a little bit worked a little bit on lost
There's a little bit on the cabin and the woods worked a little bit on the Martian
He's a writer director producer all that good stuff
He directs a brand new movie that he also wrote called bad times at the L Royale and
Again, we also like to think our vendors especially allied in a great and marketing who let us in for this one
Josh and everybody did such a great job
They let us see films ahead of time so we can talk to you guys about them
We already did a little divide and conquer that night. I saw this one by myself
So Alex is just kind of here to help me make sure that my thoughts get across properly. Here's what you need to know
The L Royale is
a hotel that straddles the border of Nevada and California and if that sounds familiar
There is actually one that was like that that would used to be owned by Sonatra
so
This takes place in the late 60s
The very late 60s may be early 70s, but not by much
After a time when the L Royale was not the hotbed that it once was
So we're on the down slope very much so okay a
Group of strangers end up staying the night there and things go horribly wrong
Because if it went right we wouldn't have a movie so let me run down this task for you
Chris Hemsworth decoded Johnson John Ham Jeff Bridges Nick Offerman

The person that works there like he does he's the bell hop that does he's the bell hop to counter guy
The bartender everything and I will say this. I didn't even recognize him in the trailers
Who Pullman? Yeah, I've seen him in a few other things but friend of the show Jim Braille was my plus one for this
He thought the entire time that it was Tom Holland
Really a lot like him. Okay, there were moments where you like it and the second I'll wait a minute
It's not him, but man it looks a lot like him
A lot of people that I've talked to
Have said this the trailer just looks really confusing. It's supposed to because this is one of those films that we refer to on this show
I'm sure other people do but we do as a minefield
Mm-hmm to discuss because there's a lot going on here
That if you go too deeply there are spoilers that you will just set off
This runs two hours and 20 minutes
But doesn't feel like to not at all it blows by like there was a moment
I leaned over to Braille and I said dude we're halfway done and he was like I'm sorry. What?
This is told at a breakneck pace, but it works. There's a lot of time jumping in here. This is very much and
I think Braille said it best. This is a love letter to Quentin Tarantino
You did share that one with me and that this is very 90s Tarantino
There's a lot of time line jumping going on so you're seeing things from different angles
But only when Goddard wants to wants to reveal it to you
Every character in this is not what they seem
So this is one of those you can't just halfway pay attention. You need to lock yourself in
for two hours and
Change and I will say that one of the things that has me most excited about this is the last movie that kind of looked like this
That Drew Goddard did that is one of my favorite underrated movies, which is the cabin in the woods, where Chris Hemsworth is his end is just
Catched spoiler catches you by surprise
And this one does the same thing. There's a lot going on here. Okay
The cast here is incredibly strong
This is some of the best work I've seen Hemsworth do
When I say he's scary good in this I mean that literally
There are moments in this film that he frightened me
And I don't we can go into it off air, but I really don't want to go into why because it could be a bit of a spoiler
Which means I almost think I don't want to hear it. I mean he's not yet his I'm surprised that he's center of the poster
Because his involvement doesn't come until
You know midway through act two. Oh, wow, so that's much later
There's a couple of people in here that I was kind of like I'm not sure I'd put their name on this
Well, there's also the aspect of Chris Hemsworth is your most recognizable star in the movie John Hamm
I would argue that Hemsworth is more recognizable thanks to Marvel
Madman
Yeah, but that's been on for how it could be your next Batman. I'm just saying it could be
Jeff Bridges I would put Jeff Bridges ahead of John Hamm as well. I mean this
This movie works on every level the the third act of this film takes 25 minutes
And it's worth every frame. Oh, wow
If there's a downside to this and this is gonna sound really weird

There's a director's cut out of here that's longer and I want to see it ooh because
There are certain things in this film and this this might be a minor spoiler
So I'm gonna put it out there in
There are certain things in this film that are red herrings
That I don't think were intended to be as if that was a genuine direction as if there's certain things that are focused on
That you know are supposed to tie to something else and don't
And again, we can go over this off air well what I was going to say is in a in a way is it kind of like how unusual suspects the
Oh my god, I'm drawn a blank on
Other spoiler for an older movie that Kevin Spacey want to the Kaiser Soze
Now where where he used one person in each scene when they was doing the flashback so it's not like that. Okay
Mm-hmm
But there's and and Braggel and I talked about this too. I was like yeah, that was kind of weird and I would have liked to know
There's there's a couple of characters whose motivations
I would have liked to have known more about and I guarantee it they're in there somewhere
But they wound up in the cutting room floor
So I'm hoping that there's a director's cut of this that will get released at some point
But that's really my only complaint it didn't take me out of the film
I mean every performance in this is rock solid
You know, it's really interesting when you see a movie like this they
Doesn't have much behind it with a fan base like say a Marvel would start going back to that
But the fact that every trailer kind of looked similar for the most part
So you were only getting such a small narrow view because and I love when they do that if you're given any more
It's going to ruin things and that's the thing about this film go into it as cold as you possibly can
Because it's the only way that you're going to be able to get to to be able to enjoy it in my personal opinion
There's if you don't go into this film cold
You're gonna wind up disappointed because you're like oh, I wish I hadn't known that
Because there's a lot of layers to this thing and there's a lot going on
And I cannot overstate my excitement to see it eventually and Chad actually asked me if it was he said I reminded him of four rooms
And I said I can see that
But number one, it's all one director
Yeah, and may he does break the chapters down by room number
Oh really? Yes, okay, so he definitely does the Tarantino thing there
Yeah, and so you really have to pay attention for when people check into their rooms
Because that way you know who's being dealt with at a certain point
clever, but it's really well done

The dichotomy between the California side and the Nevada side is portrays itself well
It's not just a passing thing. There's actually certain things that happen on either side of the border
That pertain and how you can do certain things on some side you can't do on the other side and
It's really like to mention in the in the trailer with gambling which you can't do really because
I want to go into it, but there's there's something gambling does play a role in it. Okay, then we'll
But I mean this movie is so good
so good
And it's it's it's and I think Braggel said it best. It's a love letter
It's not an homage. He doesn't try to be Tarantino, but you see very Tarantino-esque things in it
Now I you did say one thing to me that I wanted to make sure we got on this, like okay
You did mention that Hemsworth may be getting a nod for this. I wouldn't be shocked
Okay, if there's to be especially given when it's being released in the middle of October
We're prime award season and he's so freaking good in this
Where I mean he he brings the darkness up a couple of notches once he arrives in the film for real
Do you think it's just latent from all his positivity as Thor everybody's favorite dummy?
No, I think he gets this character
Maybe more than he should
I mean this I'm telling you there were moments where I was like
I don't know if I want to get anywhere near this guy like he's that creepy in this
And it's
And again, I can't really talk too much about it because it you need to see it in the context of the film
And I feel like I know where our final is gonna
Well just just remember that this takes place in the late 60s
And that's all I'm willing to maybe the early 70s
But that
Just understand when I say that
It'll help frame it a little bit for you
Because it's it the opening scene takes place 10 years earlier
And then there's a jump and then the real story starts
So you have the setup and then the following because it comes back later everything everything comes back on itself
By the time the credits roll except for like I said there's a couple of red herrings that I don't think we're meant to be red herrings
It's just the way the film got cut. That's the way it wound up
I would be interested to see maybe with a director commentary or with some deleted scenes that there have to be
Like I would watch a three-hour cut of this film
That says a lot I would because I think it would flush a couple of things out
Maybe 245
To flesh out a couple of things that were referred to but never followed up on and one thing that was just completely left hanging
Uh, and I mean think this thing was focused on in two different places and there was no payoff that I could find
It was very strange very strange
Do you feel like that may have opened it up for a partner project or
I will neither confirm nor deny that because in order for me to answer that it would probably it would possibly reveal too much correct
Okay, I will neither confirm nor deny
so
I think I've got enough that we can get to the file analysis now absolutely where we do the file analysis on the show
We're not going to give you thumbs up thumbs down
Numbers letter grades hotel room keys anything like that
It's gonna be two questions question number one is would I see this film again if the answers know we're done here
But the answer is yes
Then we go to how far I'd be willing to go to see it
From the best of the best of the worst of the best here's how it rolls full price at the theater down to a twilight showing down to a matinee showing down to an early morning showing on the weekend
Down to second run at the mood at these dollar theater down to me actually leaving in to get it from red box down the streaming it on that flex down to watching it on cable
Now Rob yes, or we typically just go through the two questions, but let's just skip ahead because they've been listening for 20 years
Okay, would you see this again? Yes
All right, how much are you shelling out?
coveted this deserves well for Don it's the coveted. I don't refer to it that way fair enough
This is totally worth paying full price for
Does number one you're going to get banged for your buck then I then I have an auxiliary question
Okay, if they had a Dolby or an iMacs or something would that be would the movie be elevated by that or the extra
It's not it's not designed to be that way
Okay, just go see it. I don't I don't even think they're going to release it in those formats
Oh, I don't think they are, but I'm thinking more along the lines of if it were available in a more limited
Exclusive it release. I think it would be interesting to see it in iMacs
Because of the way it shots shot gorgeously. Oh good. So
