We are live backstage at the Dallas Summer Musical High School Musical Theater Awards 2016.

I am Rob, I am the executive producer of the Clubhouse podcast.

All right, so talk about where are you in your high school career, first of all?
I'm a sophomore.
So, oh, wow, you got a lot of time to go then.

So, do you exhale now?
Are you on to the next thing just yet?
What's going on?

Yeah, I'm on to the next thing.
What's the next thing?
Um.
We'll see, I don't know.
I mean, do you know which production you're going to do for the school next?
Um.
Well, they haven't really told us the next production, but I am staged managing STEM
technologies in McKinney, Boyd High School.
Really?
Yes.
Wow.
Do you take any downtime or is it important for you just to keep going and keep going?
I keep going.
So, are you going to work through the summer or is it going to be on that production
or are you doing some other things this summer?
This summer.
I'm doing a lot of community theatres and stuff like that.
Anything, because we're all about selfish.
I don't.
Selfless.

I'm Kinney Boyd High School.
They're doing Allison and Wonderland.
It's kind of like an insane asylum and it's really cool.
It's actually in a couple of weeks and some mechanisms is coming up to in the Kinney
Boyd High School.
Wow.
So what started you in musical theater?
I'm a middle school director of Mrs. Becky.
She was really nice to me and she welcomed me into theater and I don't know.
She.
Yeah.
So I got to ask about the moment.
Yeah.
You're sitting there.
They say your name.
What goes through your head?
What the heck did I just do?
You like, did I just do that?
Did I just do that?
That's the girl next to me.
It's my name, Bryson Jackson.
She was like, yeah, that's you and I was like, okay.
When you're on that stage, do you look out there and it does it freak you out or I mean
because there's what?
I mean this thing holds about how many people?
18, 1900.
I would say about 40 million.
Things like 20, 300.
I think it's somewhere between two and 25.
You know what?
Why don't we just, we're just going to keep him here.
We're going to have another guest join us because we have that.

Or as long as we possibly can.

How are you?
I'm good, how are you?
I couldn't be better if I tried.
It's probably not as good as you though because you got the hardware.
Yes, yes.
I've got a mixing board.
You've got hardware.
All different ball game.
We were just talking about that moment.
They say your name, what happens?
You honestly don't think it's going to happen to you.
You're like, oh, everybody else.
You have one in 10 chance.
Everyone else is going to get it, not you.
And then you call it, they call your name.
It's just this moment of, wow, wow, it actually happened.
And then that crazy moment of trying to find your way to the stage and immediately try
to think of what you're going to say because I didn't prepare anything.
And see, that was going to be my next question.
What is your thought process?
Because at one hand, you want to prepare something.
But on the other hand, is there that little voice in your head that goes, don't do that,
seriously.
Dude, don't you?
You don't want to jinx it.
Because I was like, if I ever wanted a word like that, I wouldn't prepare anything.
But I had like a really long piece of paper in my pocket that I would just throw down
on this stage.
I could look like I had like a 19 page thing to do.
Now, I asked Bryson, I got to do this.
Are you keeping the hardware?
I'm keeping it.
Okay.
You know, we're not judging.
I'm just, it's an interesting dichotomy because, you know, it's like, can I have two?
So I think they could have one and then everybody's happy.
It's a gorgeous award.
It's absolutely beautiful.
And it's what I really love.
Number one is the enthusiasm.
Like, we were talking in the pre-show.
We were in the lobby.
We could hear everybody through the glass.
Like, that's how loud you guys have been.
Tomorrow, do you wake up and you go, okay.
Now that this has done, let's do the next thing.
Or, or do you just, is it, how long is this going to carry your adrenaline?
I think, honestly, to the next year, because my school Pierce High School was lucky
enough to invest musical last year.
And so this award show has become such an integral part of our yearly experience.
Absolutely.
That whole year is building up to this moment.
And I think so, they take that energy and we carry it through the whole following year.
And it's, it's really great.
All right, Bryson.
I'm going to ask both of you the same question because there's kind of a question that fascinated me.
And we've asked it to a couple of other participants early in the evening.
You get to do one musical.
Hmm, my entire life.
No, the next one, you get to pick the musical you do.
What do you do?

So I have an unhealthy crush on Sarah Brullis.
It's unhealthy.

Because she just, she didn't she just release the album from it?
Yes.
Like within the last couple of weeks.
Yeah.
She was right on it.
I'm such a sucker for Miss Saigon.

But what am I doing?

and all of a sudden I'm like, I'm selfie.
It's an art.
I am a 40 something white guy.
I should not be selfie.
You know, it's the weirdest thing.
But I love it.
And we talked a little bit in the pre show.
I want to hear it from you guys as well.
There's people from all over North Texas here.
How does, I mean, because you talked about you guys were here last year.
Do you work your social media into that?
Are you taking the time and networking with people from other schools and things
that are at nature?
Actually, um, a little bit.
I know we are local schools like Pierce High School's right by Richardson High School
and Berkner and I know through one next competition is happening right now
to and see other schools around that time as well.
And so we really get to talk about DSM and nominations.
And Berkner and Berkner are great to get to know people as well.
So it's a good networking experience.
And then do you then take that time of, hey, we got to make sure that we see you guys next year.
Yeah.
Or, I mean, and another question that I think we're going to ask a lot tonight
because I've only asked it once and I feel like I'm doing a disservice to the show.
Take your current bias away.
Mm-hmm.
Number one, how many other productions from other schools have you seen this year?
Oh, like two.
I'm the worst.
Okay, no, that's better than zero.
No, no, you're better than me.
I've seen zero.
Oh, okay.
I've seen zero.
That's what I love about this competition is getting to see numbers from the other shows
and seeing other high schools, and that's why leaders are...
Yeah, because your production cycles kind of coincided with each other for the most part,
but you probably probably can't get away.
Our numbers show is at the exact same time as one of the Mary Poppins
and the exact same time as funny girl at X Pleno and Z.
I have to see it.
So yeah, I love seeing that numbers from the other shows and talking to other kids.
Where are you in your high school career?
I'm a senior.
Okay, so this is the ball game.
Yes, this is the end of the road.
Well, or is it?

Where are you going?
I'm pursuing musical theater.
I'm majoring in musical theater at Baldwin Wallace in Beria, Ohio.
Wow.
Yeah, it's pretty far, but I'm excited.
But you know, you go where you go.
Yeah, yeah.
You know, and if that's the program you want to be involved
and then you should be involved in that program.
Yes, nothing wrong with that.
Oh, excited.

To me, it's just, I get a, I get a glow in my chest because I did this for four years in high school myself.
And I absolutely loved it.
And I don't even recall that we even had anything.
I went to mosquito high school.
And like I know that the music man is represented here and I wasn't that one.
We did the Wizard of Oz and Annie and stuff like that.
And I remember how much I enjoyed it.
And I can see it just oozing out of your pores, the both of you.
I can, it's palpable.
I can feel how much you love doing this because I know how much I love doing it when I did it.
And I'm so happy for you guys that you get to experience this on this level.
Enjoy this moment as much as you can.

To me choreography is something that is always fascinating to me because number one
I can't do it.
It's difficult.
It definitely is.
Yeah.
The Drowsy Shaperone, which I did to turn and burn to New York.
And of course it was on a Monday.
So everything was dark.
But I remember the Drowsy Shaperone at the time was on Broadway.
Wow.
Yeah sir.
Tell that for those of our because we're all over the world.
And so we have some people that we understand.
A lot of the things we're talking about.
Tell our audience basically.
Give me give me the 30 second version of what the Drowsy Shaperone's about.
Well, it doesn't really have one concrete plot.
Okay.
So it's kind of a wedding mishmash that you show up and you have Robert Martin and Jan
of Underground.
They're trying to get married.
But of course there's some conflict along the way.
And they, well, Robert accidentally kisses a French girl and then you have to have
a whole music number and a whole song and dance to get them back together again.
There you go.
Let's see.

That's what I'm talking about.
Well, when you have to choreograph something like this.
Do you draw upon source material?
Do you kind of take it off on its own deal?
Is there a little bit of both?
Well, we were actually just the dance captains.
And so we did not choreograph this show.
That was all our choreographer, Alisa Love Valley.
So we can't take credit for that.
But we helped clean it.
We helped teach other people who maybe weren't as familiar with dance to do that.
So choreography was not us, but we definitely helped with it, I think.
How long did it take you to, to you were at the point where you're like, okay.
We're at a point where this is getting comfortable.
We almost got there a little before tech week.
And then we had a lot of disasters hit our production.
One of our cast members had an emergency appendectomy.
And we had a couple injuries.
Yeah, so it was kind of rough.
We went from very good to not so good to very good again.
So it was kind of up and down.
And because people that are, what's going on?
Oh, this is, we're hearing the bleed over from the house.
It was like, it's dance, foam going off.
What's going on?
Or is that dance singing?
Is this a point where you can exhale or is it to the point where, okay,
we got something else going on here.
We got to move on to the next thing.
Well, I mean, being dancers, I guess.
There's always, always another show coming up.
We have a show tomorrow actually, a dance performance.
So there's always something going on.
But I guess this just kind of pushes us to do even better just to,
just to try even harder.
It's really, really amazing.
And I know we're both seniors and so we won't be here next year.
So it's really cool to be able to accept this award
and be able to kind of have that legacy to carry on.
Well, you said you're not going to be here next year, of course,
because you're graduating.
Where are you going to be?
I'm going to Francesca University, which is a small school in Ohio.
Second, Ohio represent in twice so far.
Yes.
Nice.
I'm going to Trinity University down in San Antonio.
Okay.
Okay.
So I got asked, I'm asking every, all the winners this question.
Does the award go home?
There's the award go to the school.
Probably does the school?
Probably to the school.
Yeah.
Is it like the Stanley Cup or like you get it for a day?
And then you get it for a day.
Pass it around.

It's kind of the cool thing because there's so many people involved in this deal.
And you want to bring them all up there with you, but you're like, like,
30 seconds.
You know?
Yeah.
So is the adrenaline now starting to wear off?
Or is it just because of this, does it fire you up more?
I'm so pretty fired up.
Yeah.
It's so there.
Is tomorrow when excused absence or you're going to slog through it?
We have to do our performance.
Oh, yeah.
We have to read that all day.
And also it's our last day of full classes at school.
Yes.
So we have to show up and pull off the senior prank.
And we've probably pulled.
Now can I tell you my favorite one I've heard in the last few years?
Yes.
Bunch of seniors.
They got three goats and they let them loose in the school.
And they painted numbers on them.
One, two, and four.
And so all the teachers spend days looking for three because they were
thought they were numbered.
I was brilliant.
That's so clever.
And we have that clever.
I have a number three.
Now they're taking it.
It's fine.
They did news.
So, and we haven't asked them more question.
All things a pistol school is where?
Well, worth the taxes.
Oh, you're right down the road.
So, because there's so, you know, I don't know if you don't have
why this thing has gone.
You know, you've got abolines here.
Paris is here.
Texas, not France.
Waco's here.
You know, it just keeps getting bigger and bigger every year.
So, now does this mean that you get to go to school tomorrow and tell
you're true, pal.

You got to up your game.

I mean, we're definitely going to be like,

I'm the stage manager and assistant director at Pierce.

I am the crew chief for the entire technical group.
First of all, congratulations.

So I'm asking this to every one of the comes through.
Does it go to the house?
Or does it go to the school?
Or do you just fight like thunder dome?
Two men enter one man leaves.
Whoever comes out wins.
That one sounds like a plan.
I think she can take you.
You might want to be careful when he asked that question.
Because we're saying if you've got a crew of people that win awards,
I think it should be like the Stanley Cup.
Everybody gets it for a day.
And then at the end, it goes to the school.
Now, as a stage manager, I have done that bit.
It's not that it sucks, but you feel like you're constantly hurting cats.
Yeah.
You know, it's.
I never thought of it.
You're just like, oh, go, go, go, go now.
Go now.
Yeah.
At what point do you just, does it finally just everything settle?
It is not settled until the curtain gum goes down.
Or is there a rhythm at some point where you're like, okay,
and now this thing is firing?
Or do you, are you just there until it's over?
Uh, there and till it's over.
It never really settles for me.
I mean, it's, it's live action.
So, so there's always something every night that's different than the night before.
So, you got to be on your toes, ready to handle whatever comes at you.
I was doing things the last night that I hadn't done.
The first night.
She's being fed lines.
I used to generally.
The one girl that does not want to be on the microphone is feeding the line.
Yeah.
We had one of our best featured actors.
He didn't, he didn't win.
But a best featured actor fell on the set after the rainfall.
And all that was very slippery.
So, we had to be very aware of that every time they did bow.
Singing in the rain, one of my favorite musicals of all time.
It's a good one.
From a cruise standpoint.
At what point, I mean, this has to be a huge challenge because there's so much involved
in the design and execution of this musical and what it does.
Talk about the challenges that you guys have had to face.
I mean, we had a ton of work calls, ton of volunteer parents coming to help just build this set.
A lot of work calls over Christmas break that were seven hours long building and testing.
And even when we got the rain to work, it still had to go through a ton of different versions
because it wouldn't flow just right, but we finally got it.
And oh yeah, I got to go to class too.
Yeah, also that.
Somewhere in there.
Maybe.
So where are you guys in your high school careers?
Seniors.
Okay, so closing of one chapter, starting of another.
Where does the next chapter go for you?
I'm not doing continuing theater at all.
It's been a great part of my life, and I'm very thankful for it.
Not not carrying on in college.
Where are you going though?
Point Park University and Pittsburgh.
Oh, okay.
Don, don's section of the country.
Don's a big Pittsburgh guy.
Yeah.
I am also not continuing theater.
I plan to go to UTD.
You've never seen a Texas at Dallas for people that are not because we're all over the world.
So we have to be specific.
What do you major in?
I'm planning on me majoring in mechanical engineering.
Very nice.
Kind of left turning it.
And there's nothing wrong with that.
Because we have seasons in our lives.
And sometimes you get to a point like you know what?
This is where I'm at.
And this is this is cool by me.
Exactly.
Excuse the absence tomorrow.
Are we going to truck through school?
Tomorrow we have to go.
I took my day off today.
Yeah.
Well luckily you're not traveling too far.
Because you're at Pearson.
That's just right up there on the north side.
So because you got people coming from three, four hours.
And I'm like, that bus is going to be so quiet going home.
That adrenaline is going to work.
And the crash just happens.
I'm already about to crash tonight.
I don't think I've had any water at all today.

Best lighting.
When we were young people many, many years ago when dinosaurs
were around the earth.
Lighting wasn't what it is now.
And to win on the award like this, there isn't art form to this.
Right.
I want to hear from from your point of view that the challenges of lighting are production
because big fish.
It's not just a title.
It's a big production.
There's a lot going on with this production.
How many challenges did you face getting this thing?
Getting the mood right from a lighting standpoint?
Well, our first main problem was we had huge walls floor to ceiling six of them.
And we could not figure out a way to get LEDs up in our grid that way we could get it on the stage
evenly with those walls.
So our biggest challenge was figuring out where we could actually place the LEDs.
And so after a lot of trial and error, we finally figured that out.
And then I guess next biggest challenge, projections was one of our main lighting instruments.
Okay.
And which I'm a big fan of projection lighting because you can do so much with it.
It's amazing.
And we didn't want to just project directly onto our site because it was mostly covered up by walls.
So we used a new software that we found to actually project onto those walls with projection mapping.
And as the walls move, the projections went with them.
It was a lot, a lot of just moving one centimeter but that one little thing of light.
We got it figured out and it was amazing.
The first time you actually saw it work.
Did you just did your brain just explode?
I have this beautiful picture we did New York skyline.
And I have this beautiful picture and my parents, I showed it to my parents when I got home.
I go, let me this picture that I found.
And they asked if it was from New York when we were there that Christmas.
And I said, no, this is our stage from today.
Wow.
Wow.
Where are you in your high school career?
I'm only a sophomore. I'm 15, 16 next week.

Do they drive it 16 in Texas?
Yes.
Okay, because I've heard differing opinions.
I grew up in Florida so it was completely different ballgame.
So what's next?
I mean, have you got, do you know the next production that you guys are doing?
Um, I know my teachers for sure.
No, our musical for next year.
Trying to squeeze that out of them slowly.
I came in.
I got to prepare.
You got to tell me now.
Yep.
We have.
We're doing a smaller production of picnic and just our black box.
We have acting with the stars as one of our things.
It's annual at our school.
Take on dancing with the stars, but we get teachers.
And we actually do acting scenes with our teachers and presents.
That's critical.
Yeah.
It's an amazing fun.
Alright.

Does the award go to the house or does it go to the classroom?
It's going to have to go to school.
How many people were on the team?
Um, on our technical team.
Not including just our stage crew that actually moved the set.
But just designers and builders.
We only have seven in our entire school.
Oh, wow.
But stage hands.
We had to use a lot of actors to help us with that because of such
the huge production that it was.
Are you think that, you know, you got two years of high school left?
Are you already thinking about what you want to do after high school?
Were you continue on with this?
Are you going to go in a different direction?
I actually have already thought of it.
I'm really looking into UT.
Austin?
Yes.
I was okay.
It kind of depends.
I might go with my parents into their business.
I might be going.
My teacher really inspired me.
I made Jordan better to actually become a technical theater teacher.

I'm really not thinking deeply about that.

I want to get out there and I want people to throw their hands in the air and wave them like they just don't care
And but it's all about you can be my hype man the kids kind of give them to the two each other. Don't they aren't they the presenters
Or the students I think for the major award. I don't know be on that
I don't want to steal any of their thunder. You know because this is kind of like their day in this side
But I but I also like the mix of productions of these kids that we've talked to
You know everything from the spam a lot all the way back to my fair lady. Yeah, it's it runs the gamut
It's it's not really they don't really pigeonhole themselves and they're doing strictly modern productions there
They're they're wanting to take the challenge and go back in time a little bit and we also want to remind everybody that
Disney on Broadway is going to be having auditions for their productions
On Broadway on it's not that's just not being facetious. That's on Broadway
April the 30th right here in Dallas
Because there's a lot of talent this town sir. I mean and that does my heart good because that means that we're gonna be getting the Lion King back here
Sometimes soon and
We'll be getting a laden for the first time as it begins. It's it's nationwide tour
I'm looking forward to that one looks pretty spectacular if you've got the led and blue right you get a little peek at it
Also be aware, you know, we are at
Music Hall of Fair Park home of Dallas summer musicals in their 76 season. There are four shows left in this year
We are five days away
five or six days away somewhere in that neighborhood from wicked
Brickett's gonna run about a month after that you're gonna have a ragtime after that you're gonna have bullets over Broadway
And I'm they're gonna finish their 76 season with 42nd Street finishing strong

You already got a bias with me because I'm a big fan of the musical. I'm a big I actually saw
Spam a lot here at Dallas music college fair park a few years ago my wife surprised me with tickets
When I found out that there were high school doing it. I was a little like okay, because I know the source material
One of the questions we asked one of the other young guys. I believe that it's in your production who's up for and the plate lady of a lake
How does that process work because with musical direction you kind of have to in a production like this
You kind of have to navigate some pretty murky waters

Changes did you have to make in order for this thing to fly or if it all yeah, actually
Our director Andy Reynolds he
From the get go he was pretty certain on not changing anything so we kept it

We weren't we tried to not be afraid to push the big and I think we did just that and

I'm thinking about going to Navarro and course I can and just for a few years and then going somewhere else transferring
Which it's I think it's more of a smarter move financially

When you first had to take a look at it because being
Performing something that you don't know or have never heard before can be a very challenging thing
This isn't and this is also not a real easy musical to play

But I actually learn the music as I learn to play it during like the full rehearsals and stuff

But that's that's not a bad thing for some people because some people that the bet they can it's harder for them to learn it on their own
It's easier for them to learn it with the ensemble. I'm a band geek so we're talking to the same language here trust me
Now granted I could never be in an orchestra because I play saxophone saxophone was invented until the 1850s when all the good music

So where are you in your high school careers?
Well, we're both juniors
Yeah, and that's basically it, but I also want to you know pursue a college a career in music since you know
I'm actually starting to learn it another instrument call to be a lawyer right now

Are you looking to pursue music from a composing standpoints?
more of a I guess a player and it's some finnie that because I I can't do freaking conducting it's like too

Yeah, stressful and you have to know everything yeah
That's what makes the smile such an amazing conductor is that not only does she conduct an orchestra
Conducted a boat band and orchestra. She also cues everybody on stage and so she basically does everything shout out to the conductor

I'm from 40s Texas and I go to North 40 high school
40 right down the street from us. We're in the great city of Mesquite. So you're just not that far away from us

Okay, so this was a competition that you have been a recipient therein

Tell me about the process of what got you to hear
Well there was a scholarship application. I had to fill out
I think in the beginning of February and
There was two essay questions and you also had to fill out
Questions about your academic achievements in school and outside of school
Yeah, the same as her my director just told me about this opportunity and I just jumped on it
Awesome, I mean what so let's talk about some productions. What have you guys done?
My most recent production was happening in the musical at North 40 there you go
And last year for DSM it was high school musical. Okay
My school did two musicals this year we did foot loops and that boy the musical and then last year we are
Hold on back up, back up. What the musical?
Bat boy in the musical now is this as in baseball?
No, it's a half that half child sort of a Halloween horror
So it's like the weekly world news did a musical. Oh, okay. Okay. Okay. It's based on that
Okay, now you mentioned bat anything you have my attention because I am I am an unhealthy fan of Batman
So I was like wait wait wait wait wait wait wait
And then I was like well me yeah, then it didn't take so my mind took a really weird direction
Bat boy the musical
It's very strange, but it's a lot of fun. It was so much fun to begin
Well, when it's stuff that's a little out there like that you get you have a little bit I guess a little more creative freedom
I guess because you're like you know what if we're gonna be wearing let's just go all the way
You know, they didn't entirely in gray scale and so because it was like from the newspaper and so that's

South Bend here I've been there been there really
The one thing I think is crazy about Notre Dame is if you didn't know Notre Dame was in South Bend
You wouldn't know because it's so it's like tucked in the middle of a residential neighborhood
You're just kind of driving us oh wait a minute that's Notre Dame
Yes, and I'm telling you that campus could not be more gorgeous
It really could I actually got actually got to go to a football game there and
You want to be talk about my claustrophobia kicking in because you are shoved in there like sardines
I know, but it's so much fun
I haven't made an official decision yet, but either text a state university or university of Evansville
Illinois and Indiana so you both could wind up in Indiana and
Gosh, I'm so
I hear these kids talking about going to college and where they're going and it just
I'm so jealous because you guys get to see this and I want to see it through your eyes because college is such a great thing
It is and then you get a little help from from home as well

Not exactly this this whole situation is very surreal. I'm still trying to accept the fact that this
Huge blessing was actually given to me of all people who who applied for this scholarship
I still think it's crazy. You're just seeing all the names on the program. I'm thinking only five of us got it

And I always picked the wrong one and I'm a big fan of Georgia so but not the college because I'm a four-to-gator fan

We were just talking a couple of other new young ladies and they were talking about like this whole list of people

It was I honestly had no idea that my name is gonna be called and I was just emotions

My school this year did Adam's family in our past big fan musical. I loved it. It was amazing

Productions you've been working on that's gotten you to this point
Well, I started as a kind of well ink appears in like late
Compared to other people I started in sophomore year for beauty and the beast engineers and
And
I started sophomore year
Beauty and for adjpers for beauty and the beast and I've just been like a beauty feeling love with it
One of my best friends before in the night Sam Snyder
Just really got me into it and one of the things I wrote about on my essay was just like the camaraderie that is at Pierce High School
It's really people laugh about it, but we talk about how Pierce High School like theater
Is really a fraternity like you'll run around school when you see like the the dudes
Let her in theater and they're all football players as well and you just give him a big big high five
It's a it's a cool environment. I really enjoy it. I want to see two things right now. Absolutely number one
Another guy that's out dressing me and I'm a little upset about it
You've got to get over this inferiority number two

For sure, especially like for our last performance of singing on the rain which is musical
I was just in for a pure shy school. I really it was really like no other like because our last show was for the DSM judges
