because it's time for another abtools exclusive. Number four sixteen for those of you playing
the home game. Welcome. My name is Rob I am the executive producer of the Clubhouse Podcast
and I like technology. It's kind of what this show is based on, but I'm not alone for this
episode sitting across the desk and the co-host chair is the official fact checker of this show
and a man who sometimes embraces technology. You may know him as fondongo, but his mom
named him Don Ford. I'm going to call him Don Ford. What's up brother? We had a Philco VCR. Wow.
Then I moved up to DVD player. You owned that. If one day Clark I'm going to get that RV.
What the plastic shits and RV. Whatever we do one of these it is to review something and this
is no exception. We're going to talk in this episode about a film that was really big at the
Sundance Film Festival this year and it's called Searching. For such a little thing. Yes sir.
We got to think Brad and your Bay of Fonds PR for the invite. We love our vendors. They let us
see movies and stuff early so we can talk to you guys about them so you can spend your entertainment
dollar well. Written and co-written and directed by Anish Shaganty. We're talking John
Cho and we're talking Deborah Messing in this film. John Cho is a father. He is a widower as
he goes and his daughter goes missing one day and he has to use technology to find her.
This is a little bit and according to Don's Written Review currently located at www.theclubhousepodcast.com.
That's our website. This one was a little bit different for you. You saw this I did not. Yeah
just the style of it was a little bit different. Yeah there have been some kind of films which have
the camcorder like Cloverfield or whatever and they're called Found Footage Films. The Player
which project. This one basically it's like watching the whole thing on a laptop or from
the face view on your iPhone. Okay the whole thing there's not one shot where it's just
people in a scene. It's all watching it somehow electronically. There's no shot of people just
walking down the street holding their iPhone. It's all electronic. The whole movie.
Whole movie. Hour and 45. Hour 45 on this thing. And it starts off where you see the story of
David. Yeah play by Chow. And he has a daughter.
Chow. Chow. That's what I said. But Margot the daughter played by Michelle Law or LA. I don't
know. We'll say law. That's the daughter. And it starts off with a quick 5-10 minutes showing
when she was born and there's the wife Sarah Sone. And it just shows like that little family
album video highlights. You know here she's kind of set everything up. Yeah. But then you see her
gets Pam Love plays the wife's Sarah Sone. And in the first 5 minutes she passes away. You see
where she gets some you see her gets sick and she beats cancer then it's like oh no. And she
passes away. And so that kind of builds a foundation where you got a father daughter or the wife
where the mother passes away. And it's kind of tough dealing with that situation. She's in high
school that kind of thing. And so they have that kind of strained relationship kind of quiet
not talking much because of the death. It turns life around. So one night she talks to the daughter
and she finds there's some little clues like something's not going right there. And then next
morning he wakes up. He saw some signs or something and maybe the daughter was home or something
when he went to bed. And next day he can't find her when it comes down to it she goes missing.
Okay. So he calls the police. Please do there a bit. And then detective who comes and says I got
the cases detective Vick played by Deborah missing. Right actress. Okay. And so try to get clues
of what's going on. Did she just run away because of the death or was you know this just a
boyfriend girlfriend thing or this foul play. We don't know. And basically he gets onto her
computer and is able to open up one account in which opens the whole thing where he gets on her
Facebook. It's on the the laptop. And starts to get clues of maybe this happened here or maybe
she just didn't run away. And there's a little help from his brother played by Joseph Lee who
plays Peter. Okay. He's in trouble in the movie a little bit you could say. But basically when
comes down to it there's just four actors besides the wife at the beginning. It's just Michelle
Joseph Lee missing in John Cho. So it's just those four people which plays about 90% of the film.
So you could say acting it is what it is. I mean John Cho you know from some of the stuff like
the Star Trek. He plays that kind of person. The acting is part. It's not he's going to be his
greatest role or when he passes away. Here's his lifetime work. It's going to be showing this film
is not going to be on there. But same with messing. But acting is good enough for what it is.
Yes. It is what it is. It's just you're watching you know FaceTime on the iPhone. You're watching
you see what he's looking on on the computer. You see him at work I aming or Skyping. That's
what the whole film is. So how do you have really good acting or if there's something where they
can't do a scene where it's where it's not the I the FaceTime or the Skyping they actually have
here's news footage. Here's a news footage here. Girl goes missing and so they used news footage
like you're watching on the computer. So acting is what it is. Okay now I know you're a little
policy. You saw the little trailer and you saw searching and what's your one word you always say
about these types of films. Oat. Yes very much out. Oat. This wasn't scary. This is more like a
mystery more than anything. This one I think honestly you could have handled is just there were no
real scary parts on this. It's more of like trying to find out more of a mystery. So it may lead you
a little bit that this might get into the dark realm of the internet or is there something horrible
is this scary is this a cult or whatever. Ain't nothing like that. This is more figuring I open door
A which the open stores B which gives us a clue which helps us open door C which gives us another
clue and try to figure out what happened. And some people probably could see the ending a mile away.
There's one scene that kind of gave me the ending I saw it's like I bet I know what's going on
here now kind of thing. For some people it may get predictable. The movie Hour 45 like you said
when it comes to the plot line it thickens as you learn more but you might see the ending a mile
away 10 15 minutes could have been cut out of this I think. But it does make you think some people
might like the end some people might be surprised some people may not see it and get the whole surprise.
So it just depends on how how much you really look at everything. If you go to the bathroom for
two three minutes I still think you could enjoy it and you won't miss the big plot line by missing
a couple minutes but it's still a good idea to watch the whole every clue because maybe it might
help you in the end kind of thing. And there are a few things where one clue leads to part A but
you find out it's not part A it could be part B whoa and there's some things where they try to
you know steer you one way but then it steers you another way. So this film yeah I can say leave
your brain at the door because it will make you think but don't expect this to be up for like
best screenplay or best picture next year or any of these people getting the nod on the red carpet
for their supporting or best actor role on this thing. Okay. Okay. It is what if you hate watching
your laptop if you hate people that are on the face time you might not like this film because it's
like you're watching a computer or an iPhone for the whole hour and 45. Okay. So be warned on that.
All right but it is what it is. All right that's fair you want to get to file analysis?
Yeah sure. All right the way we do the file analysis on the show we're not going to give you thumbs
up thumbs down letter grades numbers keystrokes anything like that. I'm going to ask Donald the
two questions question number one is would he see this film again if the answers no were done here
but if the answers yes then my follow up questions for him is going to be how far he's willing to go
see it from the best of the best of the worst of the best here you go full price at a theater
down to a twilight showing down to a matinee down to early morning on a weekend down to second
run at the dollar theater down to him actually leaving the house and getting it from red box down to
him streaming it on Netflix down to him waiting for it on cable done yeah would you see searching again
yeah I would how far you want me to go to do it you got to do a little so I'm sorry I'm my brain
is just not with me today and I apologize for that here we go there you go okay due to I thought
it maybe is inventive trying to do a film like this with the face time I just don't think it worked
at the end and they're tried to do some twists and turns but it just didn't pay out but still
it's it was his what it is I'm going to give it the red box oh yeah the red box even I want to do
for that here um yeah I don't really have a sound effect for that there you go
