Sitting across me is my co-host and a man who has lived in Texas' entire life so he

Oh, there was that four-year period where I was in Norfolk, Virginia.
Yeah, but you didn't forget, did you?

And a man that understands heat.
Because he believes the heat is on.
He may know it's Fondango, but it's mom and name him Don Ford.
I'm gonna call him Don Ford Welcomesir.
I did that Chick-fil-A opening two years ago.

I got a strawberry with avocado popsicle that day and it was good.
They give us popsicles.

I'm almost suddenly not hungry anymore.

Well, yeah, it's like pumpkin, but for me it was good.
I feel like avocado is what was interesting.

this episode doesn't exist.

And I have to say I'm excited that it's episode 407, because 20 years of my life here
in Texas, the house number I lived at was 407.
Oh, look at that.
So that's why I kind of got a little giddy on that.
That's winning right there.
Whenever we do one of these, it is to review something.
This is no exception.
This one's gonna be a little bit different, because we're gonna talk about a movie.
But by the time you hear this, you're gonna be more up to see it on television, and it's
called Hot Summer Nights.
For Start to Soaping?

They let us see movies early so that we can talk to you guys about them.
And this one's a quick turnaround.
Generome saw this the night before we were recording this, and it's coming out the night
after we're recording this.
So this was directed by Elijah Bynum.
He also wrote it.
And I'm actually having to go to the Wikipedia description, because the indib description
is very vague.
This is his debut.
This is his writing and direct oral debut.
Right.
Okay.
So here's what it says.
Daniel played by the Timothy Shalamet, kids' kids up in Cumber, is an awkward teenager
who gets in over his head, dealing drugs while falling for his business partners and
anachmatic sister during one scorching summer in Cape Cod.
So you know, I call it Thursday.
Now, if I'm not mistaken, this is for lack of a better term, a period piece, correct?
Yes, it takes place in 91.
Oh, I thought it was in the 80s.
So it was in 91.
You're like graduating high school.
Yeah, it takes place in 91.
Do the math.
And there were some scenes where I'm like, I think I own that shirt.
Oh my gosh, I can remember wearing that.
There were parts of that that I really enjoyed.
But also in this Thomas Jane, Maya Mitchell, William Fickner, did I say that right, John?
It's Fitchner.
Fitchner?
Okay.
I always screw that up as well.
So there's a little bit of star power to this.
There is.
There is.
The primary story is Daniel Hunter and Michaela, are you three primaries and then everything
else is just kind of a spin off of their interactions.
Okay.
We're here last year at South by Southwest and it's going to be featured on direct TV.
Yes.
By the time people hear this.
Yes.
It's 107 minutes, so not much of a, of a commitment time wise.
It wasn't bad.

I slowed it down so I could get it right.
Plus, it gave me time to get back into my iPad, it had gotten dark on me.
It was kind of hit or miss on some of it.
There's definitely some promise of what Elijah is going to be bringing us in the future.
This definitely was a first project.
There were some points that it just kind of dragged and you could tell it was strong acting
because I didn't want to poke my eyes out and I wasn't necessarily doing a watch check,
but it was, it was dragging.
And then there's other moments.
There is one scene that I mentioned in the written review.
It involves W-W-W dot theclubhousepodcast.com.
That's our website.
It involves, they're in a drugstore and it involves a red lollipop.
Just the way he filmed it and then the actors did their parts in it, it really showed
that Elijah has some promise in future movies.
There's a bit of a good fellow's vibe.
There's some other things like, there's a store they go into and at the first I'm thinking
is this the store from the Legend of Billie Jean?
It kind of, they're there.
There's fair.
Yeah, but there's some set up in that scene that it just kind of pulled me back to that
movie.
So there's some throwouts to other movies that you may or may not pick up on.
There's definitely some very cliche things like, are you a cop and he slaps him?
Cop can't do that.
I mean, it's, you expect that to kind of happen.
But you call, that was for Chad.
Thank you.
And the end is a bit expected by the time you get to the end, you're expecting the end
that you get.
But I enjoy it.
It just was kind of a mixed bag and it did kind of, it was kind of an empty feeling after.
You know, there's some movies that it's just kind of a dark and there's a storm, there's
an actual storm, hurricane type storm involved.
And it just, of course, I'm like thinking, oh, are we getting rain here?
Can we have some rain here?
We're in our 100 degree heat wave here and I was disappointed to find that wasn't true,
but it was, you know, it was a nice way to spend an evening.
I said, you sit on the throne of lies.
I do love that line.
Given the fact that this takes place in the early 90s, was it one of those, was there
a lot of that?
Oh, look at this 90s reference or just, is it, was it just more part of just the framework
and it just kind of fit into where it was?
It was the clothing, it was the cars.
So they didn't beat you over the head with it?
No, I don't recall seeing any massive pop.
It wasn't TV shows, it wasn't advertisements, it wasn't product placement, but it was
the colors they were wearing, it was the preppy culture at Cape Cod of the, the richies,
you know, with the sweater and I was kind of like, okay, it's a heat wave and yellow
wearing sweaters.
So that kind of threw me a little on the costuming, but it was sweaters we would have worn
in anyone.
Okay.
Mostly historically correct on the props and the scenes and all that, or did it have
like a new Tesla out there, you know, although that would be funny, yeah, that would be funny.
I guess it held pretty true because nothing pulled me out, necessarily.
Nothing stuck out.
Yeah, there were no, there were no, yeah, nothing stuck out like a sore thumb.
They had to look like the mean street posse kind of thing of the, well, you know, we
did, we did.
The mean, he goes to the mean street posse?
Well, they always wore the sweaters and the thing and I hate, you gotta give me that.
I do, I do think I saw a member's only jacket in there.
Okay.
Okay.
I can't, I just can't blame you for all of this.
They do have some of the movie at the drive in, at the local drive in there and they list
the movies and it's like, oh, wow, that is when that came out.
And then of course, they're showing scenes from Terminator T2 or the first one.
I don't know.
T2 is 91.
Yep.
Okay.
So it might have been T2.
It may have been.
I don't know the difference.
I just know that's Arnold.
That's the kid and Arnold.
Well, it's the kid that was T2.
Yeah, it had to be.
See, I don't know that it's, that's not my genre.
That's fair.
But I knew it was Arnold and I knew it was Terminator.
So was it an hour 40 you want back or like you said earlier, it was like an enjoyable
way to spend the time, but it was kind of a, it was a mixed bag.
There were moments that I'm like, okay, that didn't really do anything for the movie
that could have been done differently.
There were some things they threw out there that didn't add to it other than runtime.
Okay.
But then there was some really cool scenes that it's like, okay, this guy's got promise.
I'm looking forward to seeing what he does next.
Now, in pre-show, you mentioned that Salamé didn't do much for you.
Yeah, he doesn't.
He's a good actor.
He's a strong actor.
But personally, that whole, I'm just a geeky, awkward teen.
There's not much work to that for him because he's just kind of a geeky, awkward teen.
Now people will know that name.
He was in two huge movies last year, both Lady Bird and Call Me By Your Name.
So I mean, this is a kid that's got skins on the wall.
He's also in one of my favorite films of this year called Hostel.
Yeah, and he was, he was very different in Hostel's.
He was very different in Lady Bird than this because I didn't tell you said that then
I didn't realize that was the same guy.
So maybe he is a better actor than I thought, but it was just the...
And he's got something fairly, if I remember, Chai.
Doesn't he have something fairly high profile coming up?
Shall I?
Let me look this up real quick.
He's going to be in, he's rumored to be in the new version of Dune.
Oh, okay.
He's about to be in a movie with Steve Carell that people are really buzzing about called
Beautiful Boy.
Oh, okay.
Not what I thought.
He's also, he's playing Henry the Fifth in a movie called The King, and there's apparently
going to be, they've announced a sequel to Call Me By Your Name.
Well, I mean, and people like him.
It just in this movie, it wasn't my cup of tea.
I was kind of more into the guy playing Hunter.
Okay.
That would be Alex Rowe.
Yeah.
He was a little cutie potato.
I'm old.
I can say that.
He was in the fifth wave.
If you remember that experience.
And so was, I think so was the female lead Monroe.
Yes.
Yeah, there's a, there's a connection there to that that they had shown earlier.

There's just a, there's a parody poster.
So he's your rumored Paula Trady's for Dune.

Anything else that you want to tell us where we get to the final analysis?
I think I pretty much covered the highs and the lows.

sure that we get everybody what they need.
I have opinions.
And this was your, this was your first solo adventure.
If I'm not mistaken, writing a, writing a review for us.

Yeah.
I viewed it by myself.
I think you ended up, somebody else watched.
I guess Don watched it.
It did.
Don watched it at a different screening.
That's what it was.
But this is the first one that's just all you.

It's awesome.
It is.
It's kind of a right of passage on this show when you do your first solo.
And this is a coming of age story.

That's kind of fitting.

So here's how it's going to happen.
We're going to ask Gen.

Question of Realm is, would she see hot summer nights again if the answers know them
were done here?
But if the answer is yes, then the follow up question is going to be how far would she
do when it goes see it?
Now, we're still going to use our normal scale because it does tell you how good this
is.
So best of the best of the worst of the best is best of the best would be full price
of the theater down to a twilight showing down to a matinee down to early morning on
a weekend down the second one at the dollar theater down to actually leaving her house
to get it from red box down to streaming it on Netflix down to cable.
Now great.
It's going to be on cable.
But general, would you see this again?
Yes.
How far under normal circumstances would you be willing to go do so?
I would pick it out on Netflix or one of the streaming services.
So then yes, if it was on cable, leave it on, but I would actually pick it out of the
streaming options to watch.
